1. Ignoring Google My Business
If you ’ re ignoring Google My Business, you might as well be running your local SEO campaign from your grandma’s basement This platform is essentially the Holy Grail for local visibility Not utilizing it is akin to trying to run a marathon with weights tied to your ankles You’re not just missing out; you ’ re practically begging to be ignored by potential customers who are practically glued to their screens, searching for businesses just like yours. So, unless your business strategy involves staying invisible, I suggest you pay attention.
Why Google My Business? Because Google, That’s Why. Let’s break it down real simple: Google My Business (GMB) is your direct line to Google’s good graces, and in the realm of local SEO, Google is the overlord By not setting up your GMB profile, you ’ re essentially giving your competitors a free pass to stomp all over you in search rankings It’s like showing up to a gunfight with a rubber knife
GMB allows you to manage your online presence across Google, including Search and Maps, ensuring that potential customers find you, not just any random Joe with a similar business
Now, ignoring GMB in your local SEO strategy is a top-tier, award-winning mistake. It’s the kind of error that could only be more disastrous if you actively tried.
Without a well-optimized GMB profile, you ’ re not only invisible to Google’s algorithms but also to customers who rely heavily on up-to-date business information like operation hours, location, and services
This isn’t just a small oversight; it’s an SEO suicide mission Wake up and smell the digital coffee Get on Google My Business before your business becomes just another cautionary tale
B Y G A V I N B A R N E T T
2. Inconsistent NAP Information
If you think slapping your business name and address anywhere online without a care for consistency is a good strategy, then you ’ re probably also the type who thinks socks with sandals is a killer fashion statement Let’s get real here In the world of Local SEO, “NAP” stands for Name, Address, and Phone number, and messing this up is like giving your competition a free pass to trample you If your NAP info varies from one site to another, search engines will trust you about as much as a two-dollar bill.
Why You Look Like a Clown
Imagine this: every time Google spots your business info online and it’s different, it’s like you ’ re wearing a big red nose and oversized shoes Search engines are designed to deliver the most accurate and reliable info to users, and when you can’t even get your own details right, it throws a wrench into the trust machine Consistency is key without it, you ’ re basically playing a sad tune that nobody wants to hear, let alone dance to.
Get It Together
To avoid turning your Local SEO efforts into a joke, audit your online presence like a hawk stalking its prey Align your NAP info across all platforms yes, that includes the obscure directories you signed up for at 3 AM A consistent NAP not only boosts your credibility with search engines but also prevents potential customers from showing up at the wrong location or calling a number that’s been dead since the flip phone era. Get it right, or continue being the punchline of every digital marketing joke out there
3. Overlooking Online Reviews
A Brilliant Idea If You Fancy Business Sabotage
Ah, online reviews the digital age ’ s gift to businesses everywhere, and yet, some of you treat them with the kind of disregard usually reserved for spam emails. Here’s a hot take: Ignoring online reviews is like hosting a party and not bothering to greet your guests It’s rude, dismissive, and a fantastic way to make sure they never come back Reviews are the frontline soldiers of your SEO battle, influencing Google’s opinion of your relevance like nothing else So, when you sideline them, you ’ re not just being a tad negligent; you ’ re practically begging for obscurity
Why Responding to Reviews Isn’t Just “Nice to Have”
For those of you who think responding to reviews is just a quaint little touch wake up and smell the algorithm. Every unanswered review is a missed opportunity to boost your local SEO juice And let’s not forget the human angle (however much we’d like to): people read these responses When potential customers see that you can’t be bothered to reply, they’ll assume your customer service follows suit It’s not about being nice; it’s about being smart Use every review, good or bad, as a platform to reinforce your brand’s voice and commitment or don’t, and enjoy watching your competitors do it.
The Catastrophic Charm of Ignoring Negative Feedback
And then there’s the masterpiece of missteps: ignoring negative feedback Some of you seem to think that if you ignore it, it’ll go away Spoiler alert it won’t Negative reviews are not wine; they do not improve with age. Each ignored complaint is a beacon for potential customers to steer clear of your disaster zone. On the flip side, a well-handled complaint can turn angry Joe into advocate Jane Address these digital tantrums promptly and watch as your credibility skyrockets, turning what could be a PR nightmare into a trust-building showcase

School is almost over here in Texas and parents we've talked with are prepping for a long summer making last-minute decisions on what to do with the kiddos For some, summer is all about lounging at the pool, summer camp, or weekend outings camping or in my case, ‘glamping’.
During this time of the year, Josh and I usually field questions on debt as parents want to have a good time, yet want to stay on track with their financial goals. I have had many conversations where people share that they HATE getting into debt. Many prefer to pay themselves than to take on debt from a credit agency Yet, others are extremely comfortable with taking on debt to achieve their goals
I loved the article that was shared recently on Northwestern Mutual, where they shared how parents are planning for their children's education, below is an excerpt of a study:
"For many parents, saving for their kids' college expenses is priority number one," Christian Mitchell, Chief Customer Officer at Northwestern Mutual said "Each family should determine what feels right for them – but they need to act intentionally Otherwise, the window to save for college costs may close – and fate will dictate how much parents and kids must contribute. It's also important to remember that college loans exist, but there is no such thing as a retirement loan. If parents can't afford life in retirement, that unexpected financial burden may fall on their kids' shoulders. That's why it's so important to consider every money move as part of a larger financial plan. With a comprehensive plan in place, parents can help their children pursue higher education without worrying about sacrificing their own future goals"
According to Northwestern Mutual research, two in ten adults in America (led by 40% of Gen Z) are saving for college, either for themselves or a family member On average, they expect the total cost of college to be $77,300 and aim to pay it off by the age of 45 Each American's actual college expenses may vary significantly, based on the type of school, the level of the institution, and the student's living arrangements
"Not all debt is 'bad debt.' Some debt, like college loans, can actually help Americans increase their income-earning potential and build wealth into the future," said Mitchell. "
A college degree tends to pay long-term dividends and give people a lifetime earnings edge That said, college costs can vary significantly, so students and families need to do their homework on higher education People with advanced degrees need to plan even more rigorously to ensure their financial security."
I loved this study since it shows what some parents are intentionally planning to provide for the next generation. It also highlights a practical reminder, Not all debt is 'bad debt'. Josh and I hope you enjoy the summer & make sure to make some fun memories In our opinion, the memories we make with our families are priceless

People preparing for retirement may be wondering if they’ve saved enough Those nearing or in retirement may be wondering if it will last Perhaps the question on everyone ’ s mind, no matter where they are in the journey, is: “Will I outlive my savings?”
There’s a lot going on that can impact your retirement savings Markets continuously fluctuate in response to economic activities. Health care costs continue to rise. There’s uncertainty around the future of Social Security. And then there’s life expectancy; you may live longer than you expect, but how do you know?
“The key to a successful retirement that can withstand economic challenges is to prepare early and review regularly,” says Sarah Hamlen, Thrivent financial advisor in White Sulphur Springs, Montana “Creating the right retirement plan is a strategy and a science, and its where professional advice is important
The ‘water cooler’ doesn’t always have the right story, nor does it have the tools that we, as financial advisors, can use to project how any challenges can impact your plan” While guarantees in life are few, here are four actionable steps you can take, with the guidance and expertise of your financial advisor, to help protect your money for when you need it most.
Develop Your Retirement Goals
Whether your retirement date is nearing or you ’ re shifting gears in retirement, the first step always is to determine your goals.
“You need to focus on what you want your retirement to look like,” says Ben Carr, Thrivent financial advisor in Cedarburg, Wisconsin “Retirement can mean a lot of different things to people; what do you want yours to include?” Do you want to travel? Pick up a new hobby? Buy a cabin on a lake? Leave an inheritance?
B Y T H R I V E N T , F R O M S A M E E R B H A M
Articulating your needs, wants and wishes to your financial advisor can help make sure you create a retirement plan that is right for you, Carr says. Write the goals in your head down on paper. It’s a step that can increase your chance of achieving them While this doesn’t mean you can’t change them, it can help you create a more accurate retirement plan
When Bob and Rosanne Schmidt of Brenham, Texas, met with Thrivent financial advisor Barney Loesch, also of Brenham, for the first time in 2019, this is where they started. Bob and Rosanne, both 67 now, were starting to consider their Social Security options, and they were seeking a financial advisor who could help them create a strategy for the longterm based on their goals, says Bob Rosanne retired in 2019 and Bob in 2020
“I wanted to have a personal relationship with the person guiding us with our finances, in case something happened to Bob,” Rosanne says “We had an instant connection with Barney.”
The Schmidts had purchased some land, so some of their goals revolve around work Bob wants to do with the land to create a place for their children and grandchildren to hang out. A tractor to help with the work was near the top of the list A boat The couple also wants to travel
“We had started saving as soon as we had jobs, so we were ready to get some things that many of our friends already had,” says Bob “We never did without what we needed; we were both just frugal But we knew that with our goals, we were going to have some costs up front.”

Do you struggle with wanting to tackle that big project head on, or would you prefer to sit back and let the professionals handle your dirty work? While there are several projects that homeowners can tackle themselves, such as painting, installing a backsplash, staining, or repairing their fence, more intricate tasks like bathroom or kitchen remodels, or any type of addition, are best left to professionals
There are various benefits to home remodeling It is important to hire the right professionals for your major projects, like bathroom or kitchen remodels Hiring professionals is recommended due to the extensive planning, coordination, knowledge of building codes, and access to specialized tools and equipment they possess.
Professionals also have established relationships with suppliers, which can result in better pricing for materials. Additionally, their design and layout expertise can help homeowners achieve their desired aesthetic and make the most of their space.
Having a professional give you insight will shed light on how remodeling allows you, the homeowner, to create personalized living spaces that reflect your unique style and preferences Home remodeling allows you to personalize your living space according to your taste, preference and needs This allows you to choose the colors, materials, finishes, and design elements that resonate with your style, making your house a reflection of your personality and creating a sense of belonging
