Sonora chrysocolla is a copper-based rock composed of blue or green chrysocolla and red cuprite, from Sonora, Mexico. Specimen, and cab by HSH.

n the mineral world, there are many minerals and gems colored blue due to a variety of elements, such as iron, copper, or manganese. There are even more gem materials in the cyan color range, which is the blue- green color, halfway between blue and green, also represented as teal, turquoise, electric blue, and aquamarine color. The word cyan comes from the Greek meaning blue.

This stunning pair of consecutive-cut 9 tall slabs of Good Day Mine chrysocolla and with Big Horn jasper displays a striking combination of intense colors.

Most of the red species are transparent gems, such as ruby, spinel or tourmaline, with a very limited number of red opaque lapidary materials. Red jasper is one of them, a treasured gem material for engraved seals for thousands of years. Red cuprite is another red material, a copper oxide mineral that has risen up the ranks of desired lapidary materials. But as many minerals and lapidary materials are colored either blue or red, there are only a very limited number of them exhibiting both colors together. Although red jasper is not considered today a rare gem by itself, when combined with cyan-blue gem materials, like chrysocolla, it composes a rare lapidary material. Purely as a color configuration, this pairing of colors creates a strong contrast and a fierce visual effect. The red-blue color arrangement may also invoke patriotic sentiment or even political reactions to some. Red and blue (and cyan) are represented on the color wheel, which is a circle showing the colors of the spectrum, originally fashioned by Isaac Newton in 1666. The colors include the primary colors (red, yellow, and blue), the secondary colors (orange, green, and violet) which are created by mixing the primary colors, and the tertiary colors, which are the inbetween colors, such as the blue-green. In the subtractive color system and an inkjet printer, cyan is a primary color. Over the centuries, painters have often used complementary colors and other harmonic color schemes to create harmony in their artwork, and today dĂŠcor and jewelry designers implement color harmonies to 8 | 2020 QUARTZSITE EZ-GUIDE

express their ideas. Colors stimulate the viewer and produce different psychological effects. In this article we will take a closer look at four lapidary materials: the beloved Sonora chrysocolla, the rare Good Day Mine chrysocolla, the also rare sangre or Apache chrysocolla, and the cuprite-chrysocolla azurite-native copper from the famous Morenci Mine.

Sonora chrysocolla The Sonora chrysocolla is also known as Sonora Sunset or Sonora Sunrise chrysocolla, or chrysocolla cuprite. It took the lapidary

market by storm just over a decade ago, but unfortunately no more new material is being mined. And like any other lapidary material not mined anymore, the prices of rough and finished work rise every year. The natural Sonora chrysocolla is a copperbased rock composed of blue or green chrysocolla and red cuprite, a copper oxide mineral. Apache chrysocolla, also known as blood or sangre chrysocolla is another red & blue variety from Chihuahua, Mexico.

The “Good Day Mine” is located 13 miles northeast of Quartzsite within the Plomosa Mountains in La Paz County, south of Bouse, Arizona. The Plomosa ghost town, which lies 7.5 miles southeast of Quartzsite, on the southwest side of the Plomosa Mountains, was a lead mining operation in the 1880s. The northern Plomosa Mountains area is known for the primary ore minerals of native gold, chrysocolla and malachite, along with hematite, quartz, barite, fluorite, calcite, and manganese oxides. Buff worked the Good Day Mine on and off every year, mainly by surface mining, digging down to 12 feet. The big horn sheep visible on top of the mountain inspired him to call the red jasper in the material “Big Horn Jasper”. This blood-red jasper forms along the brightly bluecolored chrysocolla and rhyolite matrix, creating a striking combination of intense colors. Some of the chrysocolla penetrates drusy quartz in beautiful cavities; there are also small vugs with drusy quartz formed within the red jasper. What I love about this material is the beautiful marbled look that the chrysocolla and the other minerals create, reminiscent of a painter’s canvas. Some pieces even show conglomerate structure with drusy quartz. The highly silicated chrysocolla along with red and green jasper makes for a very hard and durable lapidary material. I am thankful we purchased some of Buff’s large slabs.

It was very interesting to see ho the Good Day Mine and a slab f even though they were mined

Apache chrysocolla (sangre or blood chrysocolla) Apache chrysocolla, also known as blood or sangre chrysocolla (sangre in Spanish meaning blood) is another variety with the same color combination that was mined at the Terrazas Mine, in Chihuahua, Mexico. It is said that it came from a worked-out copper mine. The material contains cuprite, Shattukite, hematite, calcite, and malachite. We purchased some of this material in 1997 from Benny Fenn, Sr. (Fenn’s Gems & Minerals), who passed away five years ago. I just talked to his son, also named Benny, who shared that the material came from an older stock, and that it has not been mined for a long time. He still has some material available for sale. While writing this article and photographing the pieces, I placed next to each other the large cab I finished from the Good Day Mine and a slab from the Apache chrysocolla, and it was very interesting to see how very similar they were, even though they were mined in two very different locations. A lapidary tip given to us back then was, to sand the cabochons with diamond up to the 1,200-grit step and then polish with chrome oxide.

ow similar the large cab I cut from from the Apache chrysocolla were, d in two very different locations.

I love cutting the cuprite-chrysocolla-azurite-native copper from the Morenci Mine as the material makes very unique cabs and carvings.

Cuprite-chrysocolla-azurite-native copper from the Morenci Mine Cuprite is an oxide mineral Cu 2 O and a minor ore of copper. It is a secondary mineral which forms in the oxidized zone of copper sulfide deposits, and it frequently occurs in association with native copper, azurite, malachite, chrysocolla, Tenorite, Shattuckite, and turquoise.

brings the hardness up and makes very unique cabs and carvings. What I dislike is, the “dirty” mess in the pan left behind from cutting the copper inclusions. A fellow local lapidary, Wolfgang Mueller (www.diwolf.com), well recognized for his cabochons, and especially eggs and spheres, often uses these native Arizona materials.

Specimens may contain a number of these minerals, in various combinations.

Complex copper ore has been mined at most Arizona copper mines, such as the Morenci, the Globe/Miami area mines, Bagdat, Ajo, Jerome, Kingman, and Tombstone.

The blood-red cuprite from the Morenci Mine, in Greenlee County, Arizona, occurs together with malachite, blue azurite, and native copper inclusions — a mineral feature that does not appear in the Sonora chrysocolla from Mexico and distinguishes from that material.

We will be offering for sale some of these rare materials at our booth at this year’s Tucson Gem & Mineral Show® (TGMS), February 13-16, 2020, Booth #1601. Among them, four large slabs of the Good Day Mine chrysocolla, a Riker-box collection of the Sangre chrysocolla, and some slabs of the cuprite-chrysocollaazurite-native copper material.

What I love about the cuprite-chrysocollaazurite-native copper material is that it also occurs with white quartzite which

As you can see, the color combination of red and blue in lapidary materials creates a strong visual feast, and the cut gemstones and specimens are totally unique.

A fellow local lapidary, Wolfgang Mueller, well recognized for his eggs and spheres, often uses the cupriteazurite-chrysocollacopper from the Morenci Mine.
