n Trasmediterranea, la temporada de verano viene marcada por una imagen renovada, que aúna modernidad y experiencia, y por nuevos proyectos. El más inmediato es la próxima incorporación a la flota del buque Villa de Teror, un nuevo ferry de última generación que se ultima en los astilleros de Vulcano, en Vigo.

Otra de las novedades destacadas es la incorporación del buque Volcán de Tinamar que permite reducir en dos horas de la travesía diurna entre Mahón y Barcelona.

Este ferry está equipado con las mejores instalaciones de cuantos operan en esta zona del Mediterráneo.

Además, a lo largo del mes julio entra en vigor el aumento de la bonificación a los residentes no peninsulares hasta el 75% del precio del billete de pasajero entre la Península y las comunidades beneficiarias. De esta forma, se igualan a las bonificaciones para trayectos entre las islas de los archipiélagos Balear y Canario. Trasmediterranea celebra esta medida, largamente reivindicada, que ayudará a mejorar la movilidad de todos los residentes en Canarias, Baleares, Ceuta y Melilla; territorios todos ellos en los que Trasmediterránea presta sus servicios.

Welcome on board

At Trasmediterranea, this summer has been marked by our new look, combining both modernity and experience, and by some new projects. The most immediate is the future addition into our fleet of Villa de Teror, a new state-of-the-art ferry that is being completed in the boatyards of Vulcano, in Vigo.

Another of the latest developments is the addition of the ferry Volcan de Tinamar making the daily journey between Mahón and Barcelona two hours faster. This ferry is equipped with the best facilities of any of the ferries operating in this area of the Mediterranean.

Also, throughout July we are introducing discounts of up to 75% of the ticket price, for residents who do not live on the mainland for journeys between the mainland and the beneficiary communities. This means they match the discounts for journeys between the islands on the Balearic and Canary archipelagos.

Arquitectura e ingeniería naval se dan la mano en esta exposición, que ocupa la Grada Mayor del Museo Marítimo barcelonés, el espacio donde se construían y se hacían a la mar las embarcaciones provenientes de los astilleros. Dibujos, planos y maquetas de embarcaciones de todo tipo muestran el trabajo de creadores como Le Corbusier, Frank Gehry, Norman Foster o Zaha Hadid, entre otros.

El cielo del Parque Natural de Corralejo se engalana con colores y formas en una nueva edición de este festival, que comenzó como encuentro de aficionados. Habrá exhibiciones de vuelo acrobático y estático, actividades para niños y mayores y el tradicional combate de cometas. El encuentro da también la oportunidad de disfrutar de un paraje con vistas al Parque Natural del Islote de Lobos.

There will be exhibitions of acrobatic and static kites, activities for children and the traditional kite fighting.

Las creaciones más icónicas de Andy Warhol, como las conocidas latas de sopa Campbell o el retrato de Marilyn Monroe, forman parte de esta exposición, que incluye cerca de cuatrocientas obras y que permite explorar el conjunto creativo del artista, desde sus inicios en la ciudad de Nueva York, en los años cincuenta, hasta su muerte en 1987.

Some of Any Warhol’s most iconic creations, like the famous Campbell soup tins or the portrait of Marilyn Monroe, form part of this exhibition that includes nearly four hundred works and gives visitors the chance to explore his work as a whole, from his beginnings in New York City, in the fifties, right up to his death in 1987.

Fez (Marruecos) p o r m a r c o s

1. Adentrarse en la Medina de Fez el-Bali por la puerta Bab Bou Jeloud, conocida como la Puerta Azul. Esta medina, que data del siglo VIII, es un laberinto formado por 300 barrios y 9.000 callejones, muchos de ellos sin salida. Lo normal es desorientarse, pero no hay que preocuparse porque, si no se encuentra la salida, siempre hay alguien dispuesto a ayudarnos. E N G Enter the Medina of Fez el-Bali through the Bab Bou Jeloud gate, known as the Blue Gate. This medina, which dates back to the VIII century, is labyrinthine comprising over 300 districts and 9,000 streets, many of them dead ends. Everyone gets lost, but don’t worry because if you can’t find your way out, there is always someone happy to help.

2. Admirar los tintes de colores en Chouwara, la más grande de las cuatro curtidurías tradicionales que permanecen en la medina. Las fosas con los tintes donde cogen color los cueros de cordero, buey, cabra y camello constituyen una imagen sorprendente, que se completa al observar el proceso de preparación del cuero. E N G Admire the coloured dyes in Chouwara, the largest of the four traditional tanneries that are still operating in the medina. The dye troughs where the hides from sheep, oxen, goats and camels are dyed make a striking picture, and you can complete the experience by watching the leather preparation process.

3. Deleitarse con los sonidos de la música popular. Fez es la capital de la música sufí, la expresión sonora de la espiritualidad islámica, y es el centro de producción de instrumentos musicales utiliza-

dos, desde los tiempos de Al-Andalus, por los músicos populares. Además, todos los veranos aquí se celebra el Festival de Músicas Sagradas del Mundo, donde escuchar desde cantos rituales bereberes a coros ortodoxos rusos. E N G Enjoy the sounds of local music.

Fez is the capital of Sufi music, the musical expression of Islamic spirituality, and it is the centre of production of the musical instruments used by the local musicians since the times of Al-Andalus. Also, every summer the World Sacred Music Festival takes place here, where you can listen to music ranging from ritual Berber chants to orthodox Russian choirs.

4. Visitar la Madrasa Attarine.

Esta escuela coránica, situada en el zoco de las especias, estuvo abierta hasta principios del siglo XX. Destaca por su ornamentación de

mosaicos con frases del Corán, el estuco con motivos florales o la cúpula de madera de cedro, un maravilloso trabajo artesanal. E N G Visit the Al-Attarine Madrasa. This Koranic school, located in the spice market, was open until the beginning of the century. It is notable for its mosaic decorations showing phrases from the Koran, the floral-patterned stucco and the cedar wood dome, a marvellous piece of handcrafted work.

5. Refrescarse en una fuente.

Fez fue una de las primeras ciudades del mundo en introducir el suministro de agua; por ello, desde mediados del siglo XI, la medina está jalonada por fuentes de diferentes colores, muy atractivas para fotografiar. Entre todas, la mayoría señala la de Nejjarina, junto al museo homónimo, como la más espectacular de todas. E N G Cool down in a fountain. Fez one of the first cities in the world to introduce a water supply system; which is why, since the middle of the XI century, the medina has been dotted with different coloured fountains, another attractive photo opportunity. Most people would say that the Nejjarina fountain, beside the museum of the same name, is the most spectacular of them all.

6. Disfrutar de los sabores de la cocina marroquí. Fez cuenta con una amplia oferta gastronómica para degustar platos como los tajines de carne o pescado, el cuscús o la harira. En cuanto a los locales para comer, se puede elegir desde un puesto de comida en la medina a un restaurante internacional. Y, entre todos, el Café Clock (7 Derb el Magana) es de parada obligada. E N G Enjoy the flavours of Moroccan cuisine. Fez has a wide gastronomic offering, try dishes like a tagine of meat or fish, couscous or harira. A veces es necesario empezar las cosas por el final, porque solo así se entienden mejor. Esta entrevista con Soleá Morente (Madrid, 1985) es un claro ejemplo. Antes de despedirnos, la pregunta se escapa: “¿Por qué nadie debería perderse tus directos?”, le digo. “No por mí, sino porque llevo una banda fantástica. Son increíbles. Yo, si fuese público, iría a ver a los músicos de Soleá Morente”.

La hija del fallecido cantaor Enrique Morente y la bailaora Aurora Carbonell, la hermana de Estrella y Kiki, tiene un gran reto ante sí. “Es un desafío dedicarse a algo que ha hecho tu padre, y es un genio. Y que hace tu hermana, y es otro genio. Pero te das cuenta de que con intuición y ganas todo se puede conseguir. Me lo decía él: ‘Si te apetece cantar, canta. Lo demás son tonterías”.

Poco a poco, asegura, va encontrando su propio sonido, su propio universo. Un camino en el que acaba de dar un nuevo paso, con la publicación de su segundo disco de estudio Ole Lorelei (Sony), producido por Alonso Díaz Carmona y Lorena Álvarez. En el álbum, muchos han visto cierta ruptura con los trabajos indies anteriores, ya que se acerca más al flamenco-pop y presenta cierto toque rumbero y estética psicodélica. “Hay una madurez, una experiencia diferente a la que tenía en el primer disco. Y eso lo noto”.

Por otra parte, rechaza encasillarse y asegura estar en plena revolución musical. “Entiendo así la vida y la música. Me cuesta mantenerme en de la zona de confort.

En el momento en el que está todo controlado, huyo hacia otros lugares”.

Aunque está inmersa en la presentación de Ole Lorelei (“la parte más interesante del proceso, el momento en el que compartes tu obra y recibir esa energía de los demás”), reconoce que le han empezado a rondar ideas para futuros proyectos. “La mente sigue trabajando. Ahora escucho mucho flamenco y distintas variedades de psicodelia, y me viene la inspiración de un lado y de otro”.

Pero el compromiso de Morente trasciende la música. Acaba de presentar, junto a Marina Carmona y la Fundación Secretariado Gitano, la campaña Gitanas en estéreo. El objetivo es potenciar la igualdad de las mujeres dentro de este colectivo y reivindicar su diversidad.

Para ello, han lanzado el tema Telarañas y han cedido los derechos para que el dinero obtenido por las descargas se destine a financiar proyectos sociales con niñas y mujeres gitanas. “A mi padre no le gustaban las etiquetas, y era un gran defensor de los derechos humanos y de la libertad. Pero hay chicas que no han tenido esa suerte, y hay que ayudarlas. A ellas les digo que no aguanten nada que les haga sentir mal. Que no renuncien al conocimiento, la herramienta más importante para poder salir de la ignorancia... la ignorancia es la cárcel”.

Constantly evolving

Sometimes things are easier to understand if you start at the end. This interview with Soleá Morente (Madrid, 1985) is a prime example. Just as I was leaving, the question slipped out: “Why should everyone see you perform live?”. I asked her. “Not for me”, she replied, “but because of my amazing band. They are incredible.

Personally, I would go to see Soleá Morente’s musicians”.

Daughter of the late singer Enrique Morente and dancer Aurora Carbonell, sister to Estrella and Kiki, she has a huge challenge ahead of her. “It is hard to do the same thing as your father, a genius. And my sister, another genius. But you realize that you can achieve anything with intuition and enthusiasm. He used to say to me: “If you want to sing, just sing. Everything else is unimportant”.

She tells me that she is gradually finding her own voice and her own world. She has taken a new step on this journey with the release of her second studio album Ole Lorelei (Sony), produced by Alonso Díaz Carmona and Lorena Álvarez.

Many people have noticed that she has broken away from her previous indie work, this album is closer to flamenco-pop and also has a touch of rumba and psychedelic aesthetic. “There is a maturity, a different feeling to my first album.

I can tell”. However, she doesn’t like to be pigeon-holed and assures me that her music is constantly evolving. “That’s how I see life and music. I like to get out of my comfort zone. When everything’s under control, that’s when I try out something new”.

Although she is involved in launching Ole Lorelei (“the most interesting part of the process, the moment when you share your work and get that energy back from other people”), she admits that she is already considering ideas for new projects. “My mind never stops working. I am listening to a lot of flamenco and different types of psychedelia at the moment, and I am getting inspiration from both”.

But Morente is not only committed to music. She has just presented, along with Marina Carmona and the Foundation for the Gypsy Secretariat, Gitanas en estéreo (Gypsies in stereo). The aim is to promote female equality within this group and celebrate their diversity. For this, they have launched Telarañas (Spider Webs) and have transferred the copyright so that the money earned from downloads will go to fund social projects with gypsy women and children. “My father didn’t like labelling people, he was a great defender of human rights and freedom. But some girls are not as lucky as me, and we have to help them. I tell them that they don’t have to put up with anything that makes them feel bad. They must not give up on knowledge, the most important tool for banishing ignorance... ignorance is prison”.

¿Se han sentido cómodos doblando a estos simpáticos personajes en la tercera parte de Hotel Transilvania?

Santiago Segura: Sigo estando comodísimo doblando a

Drac. Y te podría decir que, en cada nueva entrega, más.

Si llegamos a hacer una cuarta película creo que voy a poner un ataúd en mi dormitorio.

Cristina Castaño: La primera vez que doblé una película fue Angry Birds (2016). Me siento muy cómoda doblando, algo que hacían otros miembros de mi familia antes.

¿Cómo describirían al vampiro Drac y a la villana Ericka?

S. S. Drac es el cabeza de familia, es un poco cascarrabias,

pero es un buen amigo y un padrazo. Incluso en esta película, le veremos un tanto enamoradizo. Este crucero es mucho más gamberro que el de Vacaciones en el mar.

C. C. Ericka es la capitana del barco, no conoce a los monstruos y se va a llevar más de una sorpresa. Sigue las ideas de su bisabuelo [Van Helsing], pero las cosas no van a salir como ella se imagina.

¿Qué destacarían de Ericka como nuevo miembro de la saga?

S. S. Ericka es una villana, pero con un gran atractivo.

Entiendo perfectamente al bueno de Drac.

Did you feel comfortable dubbing these likeable characters in the third part of Hotel Transylvania?

Santiago Segura: I love dubbing Drac. And I have to say that each time I do it, I enjoy it even more. If we make a fourth film I think I’m going to put a coffin in my bedroom.

Cristina Castaño: The first film I dubbed was Angry Birds (2016). I feel very comfortable dubbing, it’s something that other members of my family have done before.

C. C. Ericka tiene carácter, pero también tiene su corazoncito. Me siento cómoda interpretando a este tipo de mujer fuerte, pero con un punto frágil muy potente, como Ericka o como Elena, mi personaje en la serie Cuerpo de élite. Por suerte, me toca interpretar a mujeres con esa doble cara.

S. S. Drac is the head of the family, he is a bit of an old curmudgeon, but he is a good friend and great father. And in this film, we will even see him fall a little in love. This cruise is not quite as classy as The Love Boat.

S. S. Ericka is a villain, but a very charming villain. I under-

stand the good Drac perfectly.

C. C. Recuerdo disfrutar de una experiencia muy bonita a bordo de un velero que alquilamos una semana con unos amigos. Poder dormir mirando a las estrellas, despertarte con el sol y zambullirte en aguas cristalinas. Fueron unas vacaciones ideales.

Y seguro que no faltaron las anécdotas...

S. S. En el barco de Jack y su gemela tenían un teatro donde

se estaba representando el musical Chicago. Se me acercó el director que, años atrás, había supervisado el musical de Mel Brooks, Los productores, que protagonicé junto a José Mota en Madrid. Se acordaba de mí y estuvimos rememorando aquella experiencia.

Can you think of any cruise as memorable as this one?

S. S.:The cruise in the film Jack and Jill [with Adam Sandler, who voices Drac in the American version]. For me this was a dream come true. They planned to shoot in Mallorcathis is why, I imagine, they wanted a Spanish actor- but, in the end we filmed it in Miami. How could I object? A 10 day cruise around Miami seemed like a great idea.

C. C. I remember having a fun time on board a yacht we hired for a week with some friends. You can sleep under the stars, wake up with the sun and dive into crystal clear waters. That was a perfect holiday.

And we had lots of stories to tell...

S. S. On the cruise ship, Jack and his sister had a theatre where they were putting on the musical, Chicago. I was

Cómo podía ser el agua del Mediterráneo tan caliente, no me entraba en la cabeza. Lo que me cuesta ahora es bañarme en aguas gallegas, claro.

Aunque no han coincidido en la sala de doblaje, sí lo hicieron en Sin rodeos [la última comedia dirigida por Santiago Segura]. ¿Cómo fue la experiencia?

C. C. I love the beach. Coming from Galicia I couldn’t imagine swimming in the Mediterranean without those first few seconds of suffering in the freezing waters of the Atlantic. It didn’t enter my head that the waters of the Mediterranean could be so warm.

S. S. Trabajar con Cristina es una delicia. Es una actriz con

talento, pero el plus es su simpatía como persona y las ganas que le pone al trabajo. Trabajar con gente entusiasta y centrada facilita enormemente la labor.

What was the most difficult about dubbing Hotel Transylvania 3?

C. C. Cuando tenía que decirle a Drac algo desde el corazón.

Es difícil cuando es un dibujo animado tan expresivo. No es fácil jugar con la voz y con los tonos y hacer el lado de la boca del dibujito. Pero una vez logré transmitir lo que le pasa a Ericka fue de lo más gratificante, podría haberme pasado horas doblando.

S. S. Is the first time I have enjoyed every second of the dubbing, without any mishaps or complications.

C. C. When she has to tell Drac something from her heart.

It is difficult when it is such an expressive animated cartoon. It is not easy playing with your voice and tones and matching the mouth of the animated character. But once I managed to convey what Ericka is feeling, it was really rewarding, I could have spent hours in the dubbing room.

eguramente, cuando ha oído hablar de Gandia ha escuchado maravillas sobre su magnífica playa o sus huertos de naranjos. Cualquiera puede hoy disfrutar de un buen zumo de naranja en cualquier local de la ciudad, pero, ¿cuántos saben que, durante décadas, fue otro el cultivo que trajo riqueza a Gandia? La clave de aquella época de esplendor se encuentra en un palacio en pleno centro, cuyos más ilustres propietarios dejaron un legado imborrable en la historia de la ciudad: el Palau Ducal, hogar de la familia Borja.

enar como un Borja este verano. La compra del ducado de Gandia por los Borja, a finales del siglo XV, dio paso a una de las épocas doradas de la ciudad. “Fue María Enríquez, esposa del segundo duque Borja, quien, entre otras decisiones estratégicas, impulsó el cultivo de la prosperísima caña de azúcar, hoy prácticamente desaparecida en la región”, cuenta Balbina Sendra, directora del Palau dels Borja. San Francisco de Borja, hoy patrón de la ciudad, era su nieto.

Hoy la vida en el interior del Palau es otra, pero gracias a la segunda edición de las Cenas Borgianas, los visitantes podrán vivir entre sus muros una experiencia única: una visita nocturna al palacio, seguida de una deliciosa cena de platos tradicionales revisitados y un concierto de jazz.

e la tierra y el mar al plato. Entre los grandes secretos de esta cocina tradicional tan celebrada en Gandia se encuentra su pescado. Domingo Ciurana, presidente de la Cofradía de Pescadores, presume de la calidad del pescado y el marisco que se vende en la Lonja. “Otros tienen la fama, pero el mejor producto lo tenemos aquí”, bromea. Y seguro que no se refiere solo al pescado, pues los productos de la huerta local tienen un

E N G Most probably, when you have heard of Gandia you will have heard about the marvels of its magnificent beach or its orange groves. Anyone can enjoy a delicious orange juice at any bar in the city, but how many people know that, for decades, it was a different crop that brought wealth to Gandia? The key to that golden age is found in a palace right in the centre, whose most illustrious owners left an indelible legacy to the city’s history: the Ducal Palace, home of the Borgia family.

ine like a Borgia this summer. When the Borgias bought the dukedom of Gandia, at the end of the XV century, it paved the way to one of the golden eras of the city. “It was María Enríquez, wife of the second Duke of Borgia, who, among other strategic decisions, encouraged the cultivation of the extremely valuable sugar cane, today practically non-existent in the region”, says Balbina Sendra, director of the Ducal Palace of the Borgias.

San Francisco de Borja, today patron of the city, was his grandson. Nowadays life inside the Palace is very different, but thanks to the second ‘Borgian Dinners’, visitors can have a unique experience within its walls: a nocturnal visit to the palace, followed by a delicious dinner with traditional dishes revisited and a jazz concert.

F

rom the sea and land to plate. One of the secrets of this traditional cuisine which is so celebrated in Gandia is its seafood. Domingo Ciurana, president of the Guild of Fishermen, is proud of the quality of seafood and shellfish that is sold at the fish market. “Others might be famed for it, but we have the best product right here”. And he is not only referring to the seafood, but also to the locally grown fruit and vegetables that play an important part in the most representative recipes of Gandia’s gastronomic offer. This is the case for esgarraet, a dish that is served as an aperitif, prepared with roast aubergine and peppers, often accompanied by mojama -salted tuna- or salt cod in flakes.

This is only one of the celebrated tapas that we will find in Destapa’t, the tapas tour that, one night a week, means the classic Valencian picadeta, or tapas, invade the Historic Centre. Salvador Sanchis, owner of the legendary restaurant Casa Sanchis, who also is part of the trail, is happy to recover this tradition, because in this area “it has always been customary to accompany aperitifs with small portions of prawns, sang amb ceba, clams, cuttlefish or figatells.

protagonismo especial en las recetas más representativas de la gastronomía saforense. Es el caso del esgarraet, un plato que se sirve como aperitivo, preparado con berenjena y pimiento asados, con frecuencia acompañado de mojama –salazón de atún– o bacalao desmigado. Es solo una de una de las célebres tapas que podremos encontrar en el Destapa’t, la ruta de las tapas con la que, una noche a la semana, la clásica picadeta valenciana invade el centro histórico. Salvador Sanchis, propietario del emblemático local Casa Sanchis, que también participa en la ruta, se alegra de recuperar esta tradición, pues en esta zona “siempre ha sido típico acompañar el aperitivo de pequeñas raciones de gamba, sang amb ceba, tellinas, sepia o figatells, entre otras”.

a fideuà es la reina. Una vez pasado el aperitivo, la estrella en la cocina local es la fideuà.

Como muchos de los mejores inventos gastronómicos, este también nació por accidente, cuando unos pescadores del Grau de Gandia se quedaron sin arroz en alta mar y decidieron echar fideos a su sofrito de pescado. Hoy, cocineros de todo el mundo compiten por preparar la mejor fideuà en el concurso que se celebra cada año en Gandia.

Aunque, según Avelino Alfaro, presidente de la Asociación Fideuà de Gandia, en realidad el único secreto es “utilizar un buen fideo y preparar un caldo de pescado potente y un buen sofrito”.

Pero Gandia también es tierra de arroces y aquí nunca faltan los clásicos. Para José Manuel Navarro, presidente de la Asociación de Hosteleros, entre los más populares se encuentran “el arroz a banda, que se prepara con caldo de pescado de roca, y el arroz al horno, muy típico de esta zona”.

nnovación y tradición. Más allá de la cocina tradicional, la gastronomía de la Safor ganó popularidad cuando el restaurante Casa Manolo de Daimús, un pequeño municipio a escasos kilómetros de Gandia, obtuvo su primera Estrella Michelín. Y es que, desde hace años, en esta zona la tradición se combina con nuevas técnicas para ofrecer nuevas experiencias a los comensales.

Un buen ejemplo son los fogones de Juanvi Mas, cocinero de La Gastrocasa, donde se trabaja “con aromas y sabores tradicionales para preparar una versión actualizada de los platos”. Y parece que esa es la clave del éxito de esta nueva tendencia: modernizar recetas clásicas sin olvidar que, en esta tierra, el producto de calidad es el rey.

ra un mocoso de solo 10 años y mucho desparpajo cuando se coló a través de la televisión en los hogares españoles acompañado de su tabla de surf. Hablamos de Yael Peña, aquel chaval de ojos enormes y el pelo tan rubio que casi parecía blanco. Ahora, con 18 años, sueña con quitarse de encima la etiqueta de “niñodelanuncio”, un sambenito que arrastra desde que protagonizó ese spot. “Quiero que la gente me conozca por mí mismo, por ser Yael”, asegura.

¿Quién te inició en el deporte del surf?

Nací y vivo en un pueblo pesquero, en el que todo está relacionado con el mar. Mis padres y amigos surfean, así que no me costó mucho decidirme.

Al principio surfeabas por afición. ¿Cuándo y por qué decidiste dar el salto al surf profesional?

Comencé a surfear por hobby y aún lo sigo haciendo.

Si, en algún momento, dejara de sentir por el surf lo que he sentido desde aquella primera vez que me metí en el agua, en ese instante lo dejaría. Es verdad que he empezado a viajar y competir, pero sigo surfeando por la misma razón por la que empecé.

¿Qué sientes cuando surfeas las olas?

En la cresta de la ola.

Seguir haciendo lo que me gusta, surfear, y seguir viviendo y aprendiendo de ello.

El mar es tu segundo hábitat. ¿Qué es para ti el mar?

Es mi manera de desconectar y conectar con todo a la misma vez.

¿Serías capaz de vivir en un lugar sin mar?

Probablemente sí, pero solo durante una temporada, y no sería en una ciudad. Me gustaría probar la montaña, hacer snow y cambiar un poco mi zona de confort.

Como surfista, ¿notas el deterioro del mar del que alertan los científicos?

No se nota en el color o la forma de las olas, pero sí en que las temperaturas a veces no son las adecuadas a

Who introduced you to the sport of surfing?

I was born and I live in a fishing village where everything is linked to the sea. My parents and friends surf, so it wasn’t a difficult decision to make.

I started to surf because I enjoyed it and I still do. If, at any time, I stop feeling for surfing what I have felt since the first time I got in the sea, I will stop immediately. It is true that I have started to travel and compete, but I continue surfing for the exactly same reason as I started.

What do you feel when you are out on the waves?

Es un deporte que puede practicar cualquiera, al fin y al cabo, un futbolista que juegue por afición y pasión se comprará un pelota de cinco euros y jugará con ella hasta que se le rompa o pierda. En el surf es igual, con una tabla de 300 euros puedes surfear durante montón de tiempo, pero después puedes invertir en una tabla más buena, en un traje, unas quillas... Y eso al final sí cuesta dinero.

I like it because I can do what I want in the waves, and the strength and shape of a wave is the perfect way to enjoy the sea.

Los que todo el mundo conoce: hippie rubio con ojos azules, furgoneta y una tabla bajo el brazo. Pero solo tienes que ir a la playa un día y ver como no encuentras a ninguno así, son personas normales, con sus trabajos, que surfean por afición.

The sea is your second home. What does the sea mean to you?

¿Cuáles son las principales características que debe tener un gran surfista?

I probably could, but only for a short time, and I couldn’t live in a city. I would like to try living in the mountains, snowboarding and getting a little out of my comfort zone.

Tu hermana Thais también se dedica al surf. ¿Existen diferencias a la hora de surfear entre hombres y mujeres?

No mucha. Ellas tienen un surfing más bonito y tranquilo que los chicos normalmente, aunque no siempre.

Could you live somewhere without sea?

As a surfer can you see the deterioration of the sea noticed by scientists?

Not from the colour and shape of the waves, but it is noticeable from the temperatures which are sometimes unusual for the time of year, the sea now is warmer for longer than it used to be.

What is the best thing surfing has given you?

The friends I have made and the places I have visited.

Is it a sport for rich people?

It is a sport that anyone can do. After all, a footballer who plays because he loves it will buy a football for five euros and play with it until it breaks or he loses it. Surfing is the same, with a board costing 300 euros you can surf for a huge amount of time, but then you must invest in a better board, a suit, some keels... And this does cost money.

Are there many stereotypes around surfing?

Everyone knows them: the blond hippy with blue eyes, a van and a surfboard under his arm. But you only have to go to the beach for one day to see that you don’t meet anyone like that. Surfers are normal people, with jobs, who surf because they love it.

What are the main characteristics a great surfer needs?

Humility and respect.

Your sister Thais also surfs. Are there differences between male and female surfers?

Not many. Female surfers generally surf more stylishly and calmly than male surfers but not always.

n la historia española de Mallorca hay dos grandes conquistas. La más conocida, liderada por Jaime I de Aragón, ocurrió en 1229. La más actual ocupa la segunda mitad del siglo XX y continúa hasta nuestros días. Las razones de la primera fueron comerciales. La toma del siglo pasado, metafórica y mucho más democrática pues incumbe a todo tipo de visitantes, atiende a algo indiscutible: sus playas.

a fama de la isla central de Baleares se explica por sus dos centenares de arenales repartidos en 550 kilómetros de costa. Mallorca no excluye a nadie. Tiene playas para todos. It’s all about the beaches It would be unfair to single out Mallorca just for the beauty of its coasts and to ignore its gastronomy, culture, sport and nature. However, it would also be silly not to recognise that it was its two hundred beaches and coves that made it famous. Just like bars, those with the most tourists are usually the best.

E N G There are two great conquests in the Spanish history of Mallorca. The most well-known, led by Jaime 1 de Aragón, took place in 1229. The most recent took place in the second half of the XX century and continues to this day. The reasons for the first were commercial. The metaphorical and much more democratic conquest of the last century was led by visitors of all types, and undisputedly has to do with its beaches.

There are wide, comfortable beaches for sunshades and strolls; rocky beaches for exploring cliff areas; urban beaches for reading and quick dips or coves sheltered

l mar se encargó de crear arte en cala El Toro (3), en Calvià, al suroeste. Un talud rojizo a un lado y un saliente rocoso al otro forman las astas de este lugar al que le hace justicia el nombre. Con profundidades de 5 metros, es estupenda para la iniciación al buceo, asegura un monitor mientras da instrucciones a una pareja ataviada con el neopreno. Port Adriano, la marina diseñada por Philippe Starck y aderezada con restaurantes y tiendas, se interpone entre esta cala forrada de posidonia –que la hace tan atractiva para las inmersiones– y playa El Toro, familiar y en cuyas aguas es fácil encontrar piraguas y tablas de paddle surf.

12 kilómetros se encuentra la playa de Portals Nous (6), delimitada por el puerto deportivo, un cortado rematado por pinos y Roxy Beach, el chiringuito desde donde contemplar todo esto. Una senda comunica este arenal con la calita de Portals Nous (11), más recogida y que cuenta con una caseta que tanto sirve para dar cobijo al socorrista como para dispensar algo de beber.

U

n extraordinario lugar para tomar una cerveza es cala Lliteres (5), en el este. Esta empedrada cala apenas cuenta con espacio para una cuadrilla. Pero es en uno de sus laterales, sobre un muelle, donde se extiende la terraza de Sa Cova. Un local ni lujoso ni lo contrario que sirve pescado cocinado en una parrilla al aire libre. En la continuación de la costa está Cala Agulla (4), que por su forma semicircular y la ligera pendiente hacia el mar recuerda a un anfiteatro. Casi tan ancha como larga, dos hermosos montes le dan un aspecto asilvestrado aunque goce de los servicios de las grandes playas.

he sea is the artist in the El Toro cove (3), in Calvià, to the south-east. Red cliffs on one side and a rocky jetty on the other form the horns of this place which gives it its name (the Bull).

With depths of 5 metres, it is perfect for learning to scuba dive, says an instructor while teaching a couple decked out in neoprene. Port Adriano, the marina designed by Philippe Starck, complete with restaurants and shops, is between this seagrass-covered cove, making it a great place to swim - and playa El Toro, a family beach where it is easy to find canoes and paddleboards.

welve kilometres away is the beach of Portals Nous (6), bordered by the marina, a pine-covered cliff and the beach bar, Roxy Beach, a perfect place to take in the view. A footpath leads from this beach to the small cove of Portals Nous (11), which is more secluded and has a hut which both provides a base for the lifeguard as well as dispensing drinks.

very special place to have a beer is the Lliteres cove (5), in the east. This rocky cove doesn’t have room for many people, but on one of its sides, on a deck, is the terrace of Sa Cova. A mid-range bar serving seafood cooked on a grill in the open air. Further along the coast is Cala Agulla (4), which because of its semi-circular shape and its gentle slope down towards the sea resembles an amphitheatre. Almost as wide as it is long, two beautiful hills give it a wild appearance although it has all the usual large beach services.

Los tejidos sostenibles salen del mar Lo que comenzó como una defensa a ultranza del medio ambiente y la salud de los mares ha terminado convirtiéndose en la firma de moda más original y trendy del mercado. Su nombre: Ecoalf

l sector de la moda nos había enseñado que solo los tejidos exóticos y exquisitos podían proporcionar glamour y elegancia a una persona. Algodón egipcio, lino francés, seda de Brasil, cachemir de Nepal… Pero, de pronto, llegó Ecoalf en 2012 y asombró a propios y extraños realizando tejidos con materiales como neumáticos usados, posos de café, botellas de plástico, redes de pesca y hasta algas, que podrían resultar de todo, menos apetecibles para confeccionar ropa para urbanitas con estilo. “Ya hemos desarrollado más de 300 tejidos”, comenta orgulloso Javier Goyeneche (Madrid, 1970), fundador y presidente de la firma, quien presume discretamente de

haber creado materiales con lo que otros consideran basura. “Cuando empezamos a hacer tejidos con redes de pesca, nos dijeron que no seríamos capaces de hacerlos con menos de 80 puntadas por milímetro. Hoy en día estamos en 20, que son los tejidos para confeccionar los plumas finos. Pero es que en el mundo de la moda no reciclada tampoco se hacen tejidos inferiores a esas cifras. Estamos exactamente al mismo nivel que el resto de la industria”, afirma. Lo realmente revolucionario es que, además de haber conseguido un diseño y una calidad extra en sus plumíferos, chalecos, trajes de baño y complementos, que los hacen competir de tú a tú con cualquier marca de prestigio en el sector urban style (en solo seis años factura más de cuatro millones de euros y está presente en Londres, Berlín, Hong Kong y Nueva York, por citar algunos puntos de venta), Ecoalf, a través de su fundación, desarrolla una labor sin precedentes en la industria textil: limpiar el mar de basura y aprovecharla para reconvertirla en una prenda atractiva.

Es su gran proyecto, conocido como Upcycling the Oceans, que lleva a cabo junto a la HAP Foundation y Ecoembes. “Empezamos con nueve puertos en

Sustainable fabric from the sea What started as a firm commitment to preserving the environment and the health of the seas has ended up becoming the most original and trendy fashion company on the market. Its name: Ecoalf E N G The fashion sector had shown us that not only exotic and exquisite fabrics could make a person look glamorous and elegant. Egyptian cotton, French linen, silk from Brazil, cashmere from Nepal... But, suddenly, Ecoalf arrived in 2012 and surprised Spaniards and foreigners by making fabric from materials like old tyres, coffee dregs, plastic bottles, fishing nets and even seaweed, probably the least appealing, to create clothes for city slickers. “We have already developed more than 300 fabrics”, says Javier Goyeneche proudly (Madrid, 1970); he is the founder and president of the company, which modestly claims to have created material from what others consider to be rubbish.

“When we started to make fabric from fishing nets, we were told that we would not be able to make them with less than 80 stitches per millimetre. Today we are at 20, and these are the fabrics we use to make our thin puffer jackets.

But even in the world of non-recycled fashion they don’t make fabric below these figures. We are at exactly the same level as the rest of the industry”, he confirms.

What is really revolutionary is that, as well as achieving high-quality design and quality in their quilted jackets, waistcoats, swimsuits and accessories, which enables them to compete on a level playing field with any prestigious urban style brand (in only six years it has made more than four million Euros and is present in London, Berlin, Hong Kong and New York, to quote some selling points), Ecoalf, through its foundation, is carrying out unprecedented work in the textile industry; removing waste from the sea and using it to make attractive items of clothing. It is a massive project, known as Upcycling the Oceans, which it is carrying out jointly with the HAP Foundation and Ecoembes. “We started with nine ports on the East coast and today

Inversión, innovación y tecnología El discurso medioambientalista de Ecoalf pasaría desapercibido si no fuera porque desde el principio apostaron por dos elementos claves: innovación y tecnología. “Tienen mucho que ver y qué decir en la industria de la moda”, enfatiza Goyeneche. Para elaborar sus conocidas flip-flops, por ejemplo, se necesitaron dos años de inversión en investigación con Signus y el Centro Tecnológico del Calzado de la Rioja hasta conseguir una sandalia con neumáticos usados realizada sin pegamento. “Intentamos poner nuestro granito de arena para demostrar que las cosas se pueden hacer de forma diferente. Que puedes tener un producto hecho de manera más

Y en España, la empresa vasca Ternua marcaba hito a nivel mundial con Neokdun®, el relleno de plumas recicladas a partir de ropa de cama usada; además de convertir las redes de pesca de la costa vasca en uno de los mejores nylon para sus cazadoras, y hasta reciclar asientos de trenes y alfombras para confeccionar los tejidos de su ropa de montaña. Incluso la firma española El Naturalista ha llegado a usar el reciclado de las conchas de los moluscos que sobran en las conserveras gallegas para confeccionar con ellas la suela de sus zapatos ecosostenibles. E N G ECOFASHION, THE FUTURE IS ALREADY HERE. When Ecoalf launched onto the urban fashion market where recycling was seen as something outdated, hippy or tacky, in the world of sports clothing there were already several brands which were ahead of the rest. The American company, Patagonia, for example, has been transforming the plastic from bottles into polyester for its famous outdoor clothing since 1993. And in Spain, the Basque company, Ternua, achieved a global landmark with Neokdun®, a filling made from recycled down from used bedding/apparel; as well as converting fishing nets from the Basque coast into one of the best nylons for its jackets, and even recycling train seats and carpets to make the fabric for its mountain clothing. Even the Spanish company El Naturalista has recycled surplus mollusc shells from the Galician canning industry to make the soles of their sustainable shoes.

Ese es el gran reto, porque no se trata solo de lo que haces, sino de cómo lo haces”, afirma Goyeneche. De muestra, el inminente lanzamiento de lo que probablemente sea lo más innovador para este otoño: la deportiva Ocean Waste, realizada toda con plástico PET proveniente del mar y cuya suela está hecha de algas.

Pero la travesía continúa y las iniciativas sostenibles de Ecoalf siguen viento en popa. En septiembre estrenarán nueva colección para niños, y habrán limpiado parte de los cauces terrestres cercanos al mar de Granada y Almería en colaboración con Lanjarón. “Está muy bien limpiar el mar, pero, ¿por qué no empezamos a intentar evitar que el plástico llegue hasta ahí? Se calcula que el 80% de la basura marina proviene de la plataforma terrestre cuando es arrastrada por las lluvias torrenciales. Como ves –añade Javier con una media sonrisa como colofón a su historia– somos una compañía de moda muy, muy peculiar”.

E N G we have nearly 2,000 fishermen involved removing waste on a daily basis. So far we have managed to involve 33 ports, a total of 462 trawlers, and over 250 tonnes of waste have been removed from the Mediterranean, of which 20% is PET plastic which we use for Ecoalf fabrics and materials. The aim is to reproduce the project in the whole country, including the Atlantic area”, a goal which they are working towards with the recent collaboration of the port of La Coruña, and its implementation also in Thailand, of all places! Of course, the other waste removed by the fishermen, like glass, polypropylene, polyethylene, and aluminium are also recycled in specialist factories.

Investment, innovation, technology The environmental rhetoric of Ecoalf could pass unnoticed if they hadn’t, right from the beginning, committed to two key elements, innovation and technology.

“There’s a lot to see and say in the fashion industry”, stresses Goyeneche. To make their wellknown flip-flops, for example, it took two years of investment in research with Signus and the Footwear Technology centre of la Rioja to come up with a sandal made from old tyres made without glue.

“We try to play our part in showing that things can be done differently. That it is possible to make a product in a way that is more environmentally-friendly and has values, but has the quality, technical properties and design which is the same or better than the best non-recycled products. This is our great challenge, because it’s not only about what you do, but how you do it too”, confirms Goyeneche.

As an example, the imminent launch of what is probably the most innovative item for this autumn: the Ocean Waste trainers, made completely from PET plastic from the sea and whose sole is made from seaweed.

But the journey continues and the sustainable initiatives from Ecoalf carry on full steam ahead.

In September they will launch a new collection for children, and will have cleaned part of the riverbeds leading to the sea near Granada and Almeria in collaboration with Lanjarón.

“It is good to clean up the sea, but why don’t we try to stop the plastic reaching the sea? It is calculated that 80% of marine waste comes from the land when it is washed away by torrential rains.

As you can see -adds Javier, ending his story with a wry smile- we are a very, very unusual fashion company.

Una interesante etapa, en pleno Parque Nacional de Timanfaya, es ir desde Órzola hasta el Mirador del Río y, desde, allí descubrir la isla de La Graciosa.

l archipiélago, con rocas majestuosas y paredes imponentes, es tierra para los amantes de la escalada. Algunos lugares para tener en cuenta: en La Palma, el Barranco del Agua (en Puntallana); en Tenerife, las paredes volcánicas del risco de Guaria (en Guía de Isora); y en Gran Canaria, las paredes de El Frontón y La Librería (en Ayacata) o la vía ferrata de La Guagua, un kilómetro con tramos verticales, solo aptos para expertos en forma. Para los que quieran saborear el vértigo de la caída libre, pueden probar el rope jump, saltos al vacío en los acantilados de Jóver, Tenerife.

os amantes del silencio y la oscuridad de las cuevas pueden explorar, en Tenerife, la cueva del Viento (Icod de los Vinos), el quinto tubo volcánico más grande del mundo, con 17 kilómetros y diferentes parajes subterráneos creados por la lava. En su interior habitan 190 especies, en su mayoría invertebrados. En La Palma, la honda del Bejenado tiene 19 ramales, que la hacen muy interesante para los espeleólogos. Y en Gran Canaria, la cueva de Aslobas con sus galerías en las que ponerse de pie es complicado.

l mar y el viento son el reclamo de los deportistas náuticos. En Fuerteventura, al norte y sureste, hay dos lugares en los que Eolo y las olas son protagonistas: El Cotillo y la inmensa playa de Sotavento están marcados en los cuadernos de bitácora de los amantes del kitesurf y el windsurf, porque allí, literalmente, se vuela sobre el mar.

En Puerto Naos (La Palma), la atracción es practicar parapente sobre las aguas del Atlántico tras despegar a más de 200 metros de altitud.

ecuerda a su bisabuela vestida de payesa, mostrando con orgullo la indumentaria típica de la isla. Un atuendo capaz de transformarse según pasaban las estaciones o las experiencias vitales de quien lo llevara. Cuando Sonia Ferrer (Ibiza, 1992) encontró su vocación –ser diseñadora de moda– no tuvo duda: debía recuperar la tradición del vestuario ibicenco. Tras estudiar en el Instituto Europeo de Diseño, en Madrid, regresó a la isla para llevar a cabo sus creaciones con toques orientales muy contemporáneos. Y en ese pasado revisitado, esta creadora ha encontrado un futuro lleno de talento.

¿Cómo se hizo diseñadora?

No fue una vocación clara, sino más bien una evolución, la búsqueda de una opción en la que me viera en un futuro.

Siempre he tenido en mente hacer algo con mi propia filosofía, un proyecto en el que pudiera plasmar mi manera de entender la moda. Después de estudiar Diseño acabé saturada del sistema de creación y producción establecido. No cuadraba con mi filosofía y me tomé un año sabático para saber qué quería hacer como creadora.

Clothing that could be changed to suit the seasons or events in the wearer’s life. When Sonia Ferrer (Ibiza, 1992) discovered her vocation -to be a fashion designer- she knew what she had to do: bring back the traditional Ibizan dress. After studying at the European Institute of Design, in Madrid, she returned to the island to start producing her creations with very contemporary eastern touches. And by revisiting the past, this designer discovered a future full of talent.

How did you become a designer?

Es un concepto que hoy está súper establecido, que es la slow fashion: crear un producto de calidad que tenga una razón de ser, una historia, que sea consecuente con el medio ambiente, conmigo misma y con quien vista esa moda. Me extraña que la gente cuide su alimentación, su cuerpo y, sin embargo, no se preocupe de la ropa que se pone y que está en contacto continuo con su piel.

It was not a clear vocation, more a progression, the search for a place in which I could see myself in the future. I wanted to work in fashion, but not just the more formal side. I have always considered doing something that included my personal philosophy, a project which would show how I understand fashion. And what is your philosophy?

It is a concept that is now well-established, that of slow fashion: creating a quality product that has a reason for being and a history, that is kind to the environment, to me and to the wearer. I find it strange that people look after their diet and their body, but don’t worry about the clothes they wear, which are in constant contact with their skin.

Nacen a partir de mi interés por recuperar técnicas antiguas y mostrar la Ibiza real que se ha perdido. Mis diseños, masculinos y femeninos, son la reinterpretación del traje regional unido a un toque asiático de formas geométricas.

Trabajo la Ibiza antigua, el campo, la tradición, la arquitectura. Eso influye en mis colecciones y en la identidad de la marca. Incluso en las texturas busco aportar algo del pasado; de hecho, en determinadas colecciones utilizo un telar con varios siglos de antigüedad.

They are born from my interest in recovering old techniques and showing the real Ibiza that has been lost.

My designs, for men and women, are reinterpretations of regional dress combined with geometric shapes with an eastern flavour. I work with Ibiza of the past, its countryside, tradition, architecture. This influences my collections and the identity of my brand. Even in the textures I try to reflect something of the past; in fact, for certain collections I use a loom that is several centuries old.

¿Desde Ibiza se concibe la vida de un modo especial?

Has Ibiza given you a special attitude towards life?

Sí, y hace que valores muchas cosas. He viajado y reconozco que me gusta mucho la vida en una gran ciudad porque aporta una parte cultural que en una isla no tienes. Aquí la vida es más relajada, y cuando quieres disfrutar de algo que la isla no te ofrece, puedes coger un barco o un avión. De algún modo, acabas teniendo lo mejor de las dos opciones.

Y luego tienes ese estilo de vida isleño que me encanta: llevar un ritmo más pausado hace que todo sepa mejor.

Yes, and it makes me value many things. I have travelled and I admit that I really like life in a large city because it provides a cultural aspect which you don’t have on an island. Here, life is more relaxed and when you want to enjoy something that the island can’t offer you, you can get on a ferry or plane. In some ways, we have the best of both worlds. And then there is the island way of life which I love: a slower pace of life makes everything better.

¿Qué relación tiene una ibicenca con el mar?

What relationship does an Ibizan have with the sea?

Para mí el mar es muy importante: verlo, tocarlo, oírlo, olerlo… Me relaja, me encanta investigarlo. Amo el deporte, y los que más me apasionan se practican en el mar. ¡Si hasta me saqué un máster de buceo en Tailandia!

The sea is very important to me: seeing it, touching it, listening to it, smelling it… It relaxes me, I love exploring it. I love sport, and my favourite sports are those that I do in the sea. I even passed my dive master in Thailand!

¿Se imagina la vida en otro lugar que no sea Ibiza?

Can you imagine living anywhere else apart from Ibiza?

Quiero estar aquí, pero sí me imagino la vida en otro sitio.

Eso sí, siempre regresando a mi isla.

I always want to be here, but I do imagine living in other places. But I would always come back to my island.
