n Trasmediterranea celebramos un buen arranque de temporada en relación al comportamiento del mercado y la progresiva consolidación de nuestra estrategia de negocio. Así lo demuestran los datos sobre crecimiento de pasajeros y carga en el global de nuestras líneas, destacando el notable crecimiento en el mercado Península-Baleares, con aumentos del 12% en pasajeros y 10% en carga, como consecuencia de nuestra mayor actividad en las conexiones desde Barcelona a Palma, Ibiza y Menorca desde principios del pasado año 2017. Además, nuestra estrategia busca la mejora continua del servicio a nuestros clientes, ofreciéndoles mayores frecuencias a sus destinos y la mejor experiencia para continuar siendo su mejor opción. En este sentido, para esta temporada de verano reforzamos la línea de alta velocidad Gandía-Ibiza (Sant Antoni) con una novedad: la conexión desde Gandia e Ibiza con Palma de forma diaria con el buque Almudaina Dos. Esta línea, que conecta la capital balear con Ibiza en alta velocidad, además de ayudar a los residentes a viajar entre las islas, será un atractivo más para todos aquellos que decidan pasar sus vacaciones en Baleares.

A la vez que reforzamos las conexiones, el entretenimiento a bordo es otra de nuestras apuestas: renovación de las terrazas de nuestros barcos e incorporación de otras nuevas para disfrutar de la travesía al aire libre, animadores para los niños, más variedad en la oferta audiovisual, magia a bordo, espacios para músicos… ¡Felices vacaciones y feliz travesía con Trasmediterranea!

At Trasmediterranea we are celebrating a good start to the season in relation to our market performance and the continual consolidation of our business strategy. The figures show an increase in passengers and cargo for all our lines.

There is a notable increase in the Peninsular-Balearic market, with a 12% growth in passengers and 10% growth in cargo, resulting from our increased activity in connections from Barcelona to Palma, Ibiza and Menorca since the beginning of last year, 2017. Furthermore, our strategy seeks to make continual improvements to the services offered to our customers, providing more sailings to their destinations and an improved experience, ensuring that we continue to be the best choice. In this respect, for this summer season we are improving the high-speed Gandía-Ibiza (Sant Antoni) line with a new development: a daily connection from Gandía and Ibiza to Palma on the ferry Almudaina Dos. This line, which connects the Balearic capital with Ibiza in high-speed, as well as helping the residents to travel between the islands, will also add another attractive option for anyone deciding to spend their holidays in the Balearic Islands.

As well as improving our connections, we are also working on our on-board entertainment: we have refurbished the terraces on our ferries and added new terraces where visitors can enjoy their journey in the open air, entertainers for children, more variety in the audiovisual offering, magic on board, areas for musicians...

“He luchado mucho… Una mujer, en los años cuarenta, de origen humilde, no lo tenía fácil para ser escultora.

Pero esa ha sido mi fuerza”. Estas palabras definen esa voluntad de la artista barcelonesa, fallecida en 2012, que da título a la exposición del MEAM. Reúne todo su legado: esculturas realizadas en terracota, yeso, bronce y mármol, óleos y pinturas, además de obras de otros artistas para los que posó como modelo.

These words, which introduced Luisa Granero on her website, perfectly reflect the determination of this Barcelona artist, who died in 2012, and are the title of her exhibition at MEAM. The exhibition brings together all her legacy: sculptures of terracotta, oils and paintings, as well as works by other artists in which she herself is the model.

Dedicar una mañana al Palacio Ducal de Gandia, perteneciente a los duques de Borja, una familia enigmática y legendaria sobre la que se han escrito novelas y que, incluso, ha inspirado una serie de televisión (Los Borgia). En sus estancias nació y vivió San Francisco de Borja. La Galería Dorada conserva azulejos originales

Para entender a Mario Mola hay que tomarse al pie de la letra su frase lapidaria: “Solo descansan los que están cansados”. Se levanta a las 7.00, desayuna, pedalea de 9.00 a 13.00, come, reposa un rato, nada una hora y media, merienda, corre alrededor de otra hora, cena y duerme. Y al día siguiente, vuelta a empezar.

Tres nombres ilustres –Javier Gómez Noya, Haile Gebrselassie y Rafa Nadal–, y uno anónimo –Iván Muñoz–, ayudan a desentrañar al triatleta de Calvià (Mallorca, Islas Baleares), 28 años, dos veces campeón del mundo. “Que me comparen con Gómez Noya [cinco veces campeón del mundo de triatlón] es todo un orgullo. Es un lujo tener un deportista como él en nuestro deporte y en nuestro país”, dice el triatleta mallorquín, amigo y compañero de entrenamientos de quien ha sido y es su gran referente, como también lo fue el atleta etíope Gebrselassie, cuando Mola descubrió que corría mucho más de lo que nadie imaginaba. “Siempre me ha inspirado compitiendo”.

Y por supuesto Nadal, paisano y ejemplo, que “representa como nadie los valores del deporte”.

Así queda hecho el autorretrato del mejor triatleta del momento: trabajador, competitivo, talentoso, mentalmente poderoso y, por encima de todo, positivo. Mario Mola sonríe a todas horas: entrenando, en plena competición, en el podio (por descontado)… Sonríe incluso por teléfono. Solo deja caer una queja mínima: “Entrenar con frío o lluvia añade dureza, y eso puede ser irritante”. Por lo demás, disfruta intensamente con su profesión desde hace 13 años.

En 2005 aparece Iván Muñoz, preparador físico del club de natación de Palma en el que Mola nadaba sin mucho entusiasmo. Muñoz le propuso disputar un acuatlón (correr-nadar-correr) y resultó que, cuando corría, volaba. Lo siguiente fue probar en el triatlón y acabó tercero en una prueba local. Lo demás llegó a una velocidad inesperada. En 2008 ya se había proclamado tres veces campeón de España (en categorías cadete y júnior); en 2009 fue campeón del Mundo júnior. Y aunque también había corrido con excelentes resultados en pista (5.000 y 10.000 metros) y en el Mundial de campo a través, en aquel momento supo que iba a ser un triatleta de élite.

El tiempo lo confirmó, y ahí sigue Mario Mola. Tras cinco medallas consecutivas en el Campeonato del Mundo (de oro en 2016 y 2017) y el diploma olímpico en Río 2016, el afán por ganar permanece intacto. “Tengo la ambición de repetir el oro. Es un objetivo complicado, pero realista”.

Una mentalidad que lo define y que aplica a todo, también a los estudios (terminó Administración y Dirección de Empresas). “Empecé con fuerza y acabé agonizando, pero lo importante es no haberme desvanecido”.

The tireless champion

To understand Mario Mola you have to take at face value his guiding maxim: “Only tired people retire” He gets up at 7.00, has breakfast, cycles from 9.00 to 13.00, has lunch, has a short rest, swims for an hour and a half, has a snack, runs for another hour, has dinner and then sleeps. And the next day, he does the same again.

Three illustrious names –Javier Gómez Noya, Haile Gebrselassie and Rafa Nadal–, and one unknown –Iván Muñoz–, help us to understand the triathlete from Calvià (Mallorca, Balearic Islands), who is 28 years old and twice world champion. “I feel honoured to be compared to Gómez Noya (five times triathlon world champion). It is a luxury to have a sportsman like him in our sport and in our country”, says the Mallorcan triathlete, friend and training partner of the person who has been and still is his role model, as also was the Ethiopian athlete, Gebrselassie, when Mola discovered that he was running more than anyone envisioned. “I have always been inspired by competition”. And Nadal, a fellow countryman and example, who “represents the values of the sport like no other person”.

So here we have a self-portrait of the best triathlete at the moment: a hard worker, competitive, talented, mentally strong and, above all, positive. Mario Mola smiles constantly: when training, in the middle of a competition, on the podium… He only has one tiny complaint: “Training when it is cold or raining makes it harder, and this can be irritating”. Interestingly, he has been enjoying this profession hugely since he was 13. In 2005 Iván Muñoz entered into his life; he was a fitness trainer at the Palma swimming club where Mola was swimming without much enthusiasm. Muñoz suggested that he entered an Aquathlon (running-swimming-running) and it turned out that, when he ran, he flew. Next he entered a triathlon and finished third in a local event. Everything else followed surprisingly quickly. In 2008 he had been proclaimed champion of Spain three times (in the youth and junior categories); in 2009 he was junior World champion.

And although he had also produced excellent times on the running track (5,000 and 10,000 metres) and in the World cross-country, at that moment he knew that he was going to be an elite triathlete. After five consecutive medals at the World Championship (gold in 2016 and 2017) and Olympic qualification for Rio 2016, his desire to win remains intact.

“My ambition is to get another gold medal. It is a complicated, but realistic goal”. This is a mental attitude that defines him and that he applies to everything, to his studies as well (he has completed Company Administration and Management). “I started strongly and finished with difficulty, but what is important is I didn’t give up”.

Lo demostró con su primer éxito, Blancanieves, en 2012, por la que ganó el Goya a la Mejor Actriz Revelación. O en La llamada, dirigida por Javier Ambrosi (su hermano) y Javier Calvo, en 2017. Pero a ella el éxito no se le sube a la cabeza: prueba de ello es que aún le produzca cierto pudor que los demás escuchen sus respuestas cuando se enfrenta a una entrevista. Vive un muy excelente momento profesional: además de protagonizar La otra mirada (serie de Televisión Española en la que da vida a la directora de una academia de señoritas en los años veinte), comparte con Pablo López la campaña López y García, para la firma de moda Springfield.

Hotel Transilvania 3 gracias al doblaje [interpreta a Mavis, la hija de Drac]: un proyecto que le hace ilusión porque “reírnos es lo mejor que podemos hacer, y no siempre resulta fácil. Así que es guay que el cine esté ahí para conseguirlo”.

¿En apenas seis años, su carrera se ha consolidado. ¿Qué queda de la chica que subió a recoger su primer Goya con un vestido rojo de Dior, mientras su hermano lloraba a mares en la butaca?

Queda todo, aunque me haya hecho mayor. Ahora lo viviría de manera diferente, porque lo pasé mal con algunas cosas, como las entrevistas o los photocalls. Siempre he sido muy insegura y todo aquello que era desconocido para mí me resultaba estresante. Aunque todo lo demás fue tan bonito… En especial, el cariño que recibí. Eso me hizo sentir que estaba en el camino.

No puede negar que está construyendo una sólida carrera, paso a paso...

Me he ido guiando por la intuición y he intentado elegir cosas que me motivan, que querría ver como espectadora. Me siento muy contenta conmigo porque creo que he sido valiente: no siempre es fácil rechazar proyectos, porque nunca sabes qué va a pasar en esta profesión tan incierta.

E N G In barely six years, your career has established itself. What remains of the young girl wearing a red Dior dress who went up to collect her first Goya, while her brother burst into tears in the stalls?

She is still all there, though I am a bit older. Now I would do it all a bit differently, because I dealt with some things badly, like the interviews or the photo calls. I have always been very unsure of myself and I found things that were unfamiliar to me quite stressful. Although everything else was so good.... Particularly, the warmth I received. This made me feel that I was on my way.

You can’t deny that you are building a solid career, step by step...

Intento no engañar ni engañarme a mí misma, no contar cosas que no soy. Porque, la verdad, yo soy una chica muy normal, discreta. No me gusta llamar la atención; aunque, bueno, como todo el mundo tengo mis momentos de ser la más fiestera y la más alocada.

¿Es difícil llegar a ese punto perteneciendo a una profesión como esta, en la que se está en un continuo escaparate?

Empecé en esta profesión sin tener claro qué quería de la vida. Podría parecer que lo mío fue un poco brusco; sin embargo, yo lo he percibido como un proceso paulatino. De hecho, cuando el boom de Blancanieves, yo ya llevaba años trabajando, haciendo teatro musical, personajes episódicos en series de televisión, tv movies… Supongo que eso hizo que me tomara la repercusión de la película con otro ánimo.

I have let my intuition guide me and I have tried to choose things that motivate me, things that, as a viewer, I would like to see. I feel very happy with myself because I believe that I have been quite brave: it is not always easy to reject projects, because you never know what is going to happen in this uncertain profession. Each role that I have played has been a prize, a challenge in my own professional and also personal development. I try to be true to myself because there is a constant internal struggle.

Off screen, you always convey a natural image, free of artifice.

I try not to deceive other people or myself, by not saying things that I am not. Because, to tell the truth, I am a very normal, modest person. I don’t like being the centre of attention; although, of course, like everyone else, I have my moments when I am a little bit crazy and a party animal.

Is it difficult to arrive here and be part of a profession like this, where you are constantly on show?

I started out in this profession without being clear about what I wanted from life. It might look as if my success has arrived overnight, but I see it as a gradual process. In fact, when the Snow White boom arrived, I had already been working for years, doing musical theatre, playing characters in episodes of television series… I suppose that this is what helped me to deal with the effects of the film with a different state of mind. Although it is true that sometimes there are hundreds of cameras pointing at you, waiting for you to act in a certain way, and you have to remember that you are what you are, and that you can’t constantly appear to be the most intelligent, the most special, the most entertaining person. You can’t avoid being affected by other people’s expectations; this is why I have to remind myself: “This is me, anyone who doesn’t like it, what can we do?”

cientos de cámaras pendientes de ti, esperando que seas de una manera determinada, y te tienes que recordar que eres lo que eres, y que no puedes aparentar todo el rato ser la más inteligente, la más especial, la más divertida. No puedes evitar que las expectativas de los demás te condicionen; por eso, tengo que recordarme: “Soy como soy, y a quien no le guste, qué le vamos a hacer”. Fingir que eres otra sería un sufrimiento.

¿Cómo lleva esa otra faceta que tiene que ver con ser observada en su vida privada?

No soy una persona que despierte el interés de la prensa del corazón. Es verdad que he vivido situaciones muy desagradables. Tienes una vida normal, haces cosas como todo el mundo, en las que no te gustaría verte en una revista. Y, de repente, ves que hay un fotógrafo escondido detrás de un arbusto. Es una locura, no te entra en la cabeza… Hace poco nos hicieron fotos en una gasolinera ¡a tres horas de Madrid! Y piensas que te han seguido hasta allí, y te asusta.

Así que, días después, sacas al perro y vas con miedo, porque no sabes dónde puede haber alguien espiándote. Y en esas circunstancias te vuelves un poco paranoica (risas). Aunque también reconozco que me siento respetada y muy cuidada.

Ahora se “cuela” en todos los hogares con una nueva serie de televisión, La otra mirada.

Está ambientada en los años veinte, en una academia de señoritas de Sevilla. Cuenta la historia de tres maestras, de la directora –que soy yo– y de varias alumnas, de cómo fueron tomando decisiones valientes que cambiaron en parte el sistema educativo. Veremos su lucha por conseguir cosas que, hasta entonces, les estaban vedadas a las mujeres, sus caídas, su fuerza… Creo que todas nos vamos a sentir identificadas con ellas. Porque en esta serie las mujeres son las auténticas protagonistas, mientras que los hombres son personajes más secundarios; se cuenta desde un punto de vista femenino, algo que es importante y necesario.

Usted se declara feminista. ¿Cómo vive este momento en el que las mujeres de la cultura utilizan su voz para apoyar la igualdad?

Para mí es una alegría que se hable en voz alta de este tema.

Es un problema que nos persigue. Creo que hemos dado pasos importantísimos, gracias a la lucha de muchas mujeres y de muchos hombres (haciendo esta serie me he dado cuenta de que muchos también han estado a nuestro lado).

Ha habido mujeres que, literalmente, dieron la vida para que pudiéramos votar, para que pudiéramos ir a una universidad… Ha habido mucho trabajo, pero queda mucho por hacer. Porque el machismo está en nuestro inconsciente, está integrado en nuestra forma de pensar, está normalizado y no puede ser así. Ninguna mujer debería ir con miedo por la calle de noche, no puede ser que te encuentres con un hombre y te asustes, cosa que no me pasa si a quien veo es a otra mujer. Es injusto y duro; por eso, creo que hay que cambiar patrones de conducta. Las cosas tienen que cambiar. Solo hay que buscar, entre todos, la verdadera igualdad, y es una cosa bastante sensata…

I am not a person who the gossip magazines are interested in. Although it’s true that I have had some really disagreeable experiences. You have a normal life, and, suddenly, you notice a photographer hidden behind a bush. Not long ago they took photos of us at a petrol station three hours outside Madrid! And it’s scary to think that they had followed you there. Then, days afterwards, you take the dog out and you’re frightened because you don’t know where there might be someone spying on you. And in circumstances like these you get a bit paranoid (she laughs). Although I also recognise that people respect me and are fond of me.

Now you will be reaching every home with a new television series, La otra mirada.

It is set in the twenties, in a girls’ school in Seville. It tells the story of three teachers, of the headmistress –me– and various pupils, how they made brave decisions that partly changed the educational system. We will see them fighting to achieve things that, up until then, had been forbidden to women, their failures, their strength.... I feel as if we are all going to identify with them. Because in this series the women are the real protagonists, while the men play more secondary roles.

You say you are a feminist. How do you feel about living in a time when women of culture are using their voices to support equality?

I believe that we have taken some very important steps, thanks to the struggle of many women and men (making this series has made me realise that lots of men are also on our side). Some women literally gave up their lives so that we could vote, so that we could go to university....

So much work has been done, but there is still a lot to do. Because, machismo is in our unconscious, and it shouldn’t be. No women should walk the streets at night in fear; it’s not right to feel scared if you see a man on the street when you wouldn’t be scared if you saw another woman. It is unfair and hard; that’s why I believe we have to change our behaviour patterns. Things have to change.

Aunque parezca imposible, los sueños se cumplen. Lo sabe bien un niño de 12 años que hace los deberes en un cuartito pequeño en el hotel donde trabaja su madre. O que, cada tarde, sale corriendo del instituto para pillar el tren que une su ciudad, Fuengirola, con Málaga, donde es alumno del Conservatorio. Aquel crío se distrae leyendo un libro, mirando el paisaje… y escribiendo canciones. Ha pasado mucho tiempo; sin embargo, Pablo López sigue recordando con cariño al adolescente que fue: “En esa época construí el resto de mi vida. Y, a pesar de todo lo que estoy viviendo, cada vez queda más de él, ya que representa la ilusión. Me gusta recurrir a ese chaval porque siento que aún me quedan deberes por hacer y algún tren de cercanías más que coger, eso hace que me levante cada día”.

¿Imaginó alguna vez el éxito rotundo que está teniendo?

Soñar es la producción más cara del mundo, ¡no tiene límites! Así que aprendí a soñar con coherencia, no ambicionando a lo loco, sino con metas posibles, paso a paso.

Así, si no te sientes tentado, puedes hacer lo que quieras.

¿Cómo se lleva con el éxito?

Para mí es estar donde uno quiere estar. Cuando estoy en casa con mis amigos, delante del piano, con un buen vino, siento que tengo más éxito que los propios Beatles. Odio que la gente me diga eso de “aprovecha el momento”. A lo mejor este no es mi mejor momento y quedan grandes cosas por hacer en el futuro… ¡Si acabo de empezar! Tengo pan y café, para ir al dentista y para pagar un AVE a mi madre para que venga a Madrid. Así que no debo preocuparme de nada más que de hacer música. Ese es mi éxito.

Es un artista que transmite verdad, la gente siente que es uno de ellos...

En los conciertos, procuro aproximarme emocionalmente al público. Como artista tengo la necesidad de decirles si

E N G Although it seems impossible, dreams do come true. As a twelve-year-old child doing his homework in a small room in the hotel where his mother was working, he knows this only too well. Or, running from school every afternoon to catch the train from his city, Fuengirola to Malaga, where he was studying at the Conservatoire. That young lad entertained himself by reading books, looking at the view.... and writing songs.

That was a long time ago: however, Pablo López still has fond memories of his teenage years: “The rest of my life was built on this time. And, in spite of my current experiences, more and more of that teenager remains, as he represents hope. I like returning to this young man because he makes me feel that I still have things to do and places to go, and this is what makes me get out of bed every day.

Did you ever imagine your current success?

Dreaming is the most valuable thing in the world. It has no limits! I learned to have sensible dreams, not wildly ambitious, but with achievable goals, step- by-step. If you don’t give in to temptation, you can do whatever you want.

What does success mean to you?

For me it is being where you want to be. When I am at home with my friends, sitting at the piano, with a glass of good wine, I feel more successful even than the Beatles. I hate people telling me to “seize the day”. I might not be at the peak of my career, I may have great things yet to achieve.... I’ve only just started! I have money for bread

E N G and coffee, to pay the dentist and to buy a highspeed train ticket for my mother to come to Madrid. So I don’t worry about anything else, just making music. This is what success means to me.

You are an artist who appears to be genuine, people feel as if you are one of them....

In my concerts, I try to reach out emotionally to the audience. As an artist I feel that I need to tell them if I am anxious, if something has happened to me, to share it with them. I bare my soul at every concert.

This is clear from a song like El patio... Where did this song come from?

I had a general idea of what I wanted to say but something wasn’t right. Then one afternoon I was in the studio, I sat down at the piano and started to play with passion. It took me just 45 minutes to compose. I set off almost yelling it at the piano, it was special, very dramatic.

Eso es evidente en un tema como El patio... ¿Cómo surgió esta canción?

Yo tenía el mapa de lo que quería expresar, pero había algo que no cuadraba. Y una tarde estaba en el estudio, me senté con el piano y comencé a darle con vehemencia.

Tardé unos 45 minutos en hacer el tema. Arranqué como si se lo gritara al piano, no era la primera vez que una canción surgía así, pero esta vez fue especial, muy exagerado.

Es increíble lo que este tema suscita en quien la escucha...

Es un grito de una parte del cuerpo que no se encuentra en las radiografías, esa parcela que tenemos para que el resto funcione. Algunos lo llaman alma, otros, subconsciente o tu propio yo. Es el más importante de todos los órganos, el que te advierte de que no puedes andar con miedo por la vida o te recrimina que no le preguntes qué necesita.

Cuando canta, usted también se emociona, y eso el espectador lo agradece.

No existe una clave para hacer canciones y tocar con una varita en la sensibilidad del público para que les guste.

Nuestras vecinas del mar La foca monje del Mediterráneo lucha contra su extinción. Descubrimos cómo es este animal del que solo hay unos 700 ejemplares en todo el planeta.

asta hace poco, cuando se navegaba por las proximidades de las islas Chafarinas, a unas 27 millas náuticas al este de la ciudad de Melilla, era posible ver ejemplares de foca monje del Mediterráneo (Monachus monachus). Este era el escenario donde vivía Peluso, un ejemplar de esta especie, muy popular y mediático, que desapareció en la década de los noventa. Desde entonces, todos son elucubraciones sobre posibles avistamientos de estos animales en peligro de extinción.

La foca monje, de la familia de los fócidos y un poco más pequeña que los leones marinos, ha sido la protagonista de la conferencia impartida por Mercedes Muñoz, bióloga de la Fundación CBD Hábitat (www.cbd-habitat.com), dentro de las actividades programadas por Melilla Náutica 2018 (de la que Trasmediterranea es patrocinador). La experta habló sobre los esfuerzos que se están realizando para evitar la desaparición de esta especie en la península de Cabo Blanco (zona de Mauritania y Marruecos). “Allí hay unos 330 ejemplares, que es un buen número si tenemos en cuenta que en 1998 no sobrepasábamos los 100 individuos”, destacó.

Egeo (casi 400 ejemplares), son los últimos reductos europeos de estos mamíferos pinnípedos, uno de los más amenazados del planeta.

Son diversas las causas por las que las focas monjes han ido desapareciendo. Mercedes Muñoz señala que “la mayor parte de las muertes se producen de manera indirecta, es decir, enredadas en las redes de pesca; por los efectos de las mareas rojas [fenómeno producido por proliferación de algas con alto índice de toxinas], como la de 1997, que produjo una alta mortandad en Cabo Blanco y, por último, por los derrumbes en las cuevas en las que habitan, que causan muchas muertes, sobre todo entre las crías”. En la actualidad, las focas se encuentran protegidas por convenios y leyes internaciones que prohíben su captura.

Medidas de conservación En la reserva Costa de las Focas (tres cuevas en un kilómetro y medio de costa bañada por el Atlántico), los técnicos salen al mar todos los días para realizar el seguimiento de los animales y evitar que nadie se adentre en la zona de protección.

Como las focas han cambiado su hábitat, abandonando las playas, los expertos han tenido que alterar su modus operandi. Se han instalado cámaras de videovigilancia en las entradas de las cuevas para controlar sin molestar a los ejemplares que allí viven y alimentan a sus crías. Además, se realiza un control fotográfico mensual de los ejemplares, con los que se hacen catálogos de identificación para constatar su evolución. “Las medidas de conservación son a distancia, no manipulamos a los animales, ni los perturbamos”, afirma Mercedes Muñoz.

Y remarca que “en contadas ocasiones nos aproximamos a ellas para colocar un transmisor GPS. Lo hacemos con cuidado. Lo mejor es disfrutar de su presencia desde la distancia y dejarlas tranquilas”.

La foca monje, pacífica por naturaleza, celosa de su intimidad y tremendamente curiosa, no es nada migrante. “Suele quedarse cerca del lugar donde nació y se alimenta de lo que caza en las aguas cercanas a la costa”, asegura la experta. Le gustan las aguas templadas y descansar al sol con su cría. Una vida placentera y casi idílica si estuviese garantizada su supervivencia.

E N G Until recently, if you sailed around the Chafarinas islands, 27 nautical miles to the east of the city of Melilla, it was possible to see Mediterranean monk seals (Monachus monachus).

This was where Peluso, a popular and famous monk seal lived, who disappeared in the nineties. Since then, there have only been some possible, debatable sightings of these animals which are in danger of extinction.

The monk seal, of the Phocidae family and a little smaller than a sea lion, was the subject of a conference given by Mercedes Muñoz, a biologist from the CBD-Habitat Foundation (www. cbd-habitat.com), as part of the activities programmed by Melilla Náutica (sponsored by Trasmediterranea). The expert spoke about the work that is being carried out to prevent the disappearance of this species on the Cabo Blanco peninsula (an area of Mauritania and Morocco).

“There are some 330 specimens there, which is a good number if we consider that in 1998 there were no more than 100 animals”, she points out.

This corner of the Atlantic, together with the Madeira archipelago (with fewer than 40 specimens) and the Aegean Sea (almost 400 specimens), are the last European strongholds of this pinniped mammal, one of the most endangered mammals on the planet.

There are various reasons why the monk seals are disappearing. Mercedes Muñoz says that “the majority of deaths are produced indirectly, i.e. they get entangled in fishing nets; because of the effects of red tides [a phenomenon produced by highly toxic algae blooms], as happened in 1997, which produced a high rate of mortality in Cabo Blanco and, finally, because of the collapse of the caves where they live, which causes many deaths, particularly among the pups”. Currently, the seals are protected by international conventions and laws that prohibit their capture.

Un animal muy curioso

Conservation methods In the Coast of the Seals reserve (three caves along a one and a half kilometre stretch of the Atlantic coast), technicians go out on the sea every day to monitor the animals and prevent anyone from entering the protected area. As the seals have changed their habitat, abandoning the beaches, the experts have had to change their modus operandi. Surveillance cameras have been installed in the entrances to the caves to monitor, without disturbing them, the seals that live and feed their young there.

Monthly photographic monitoring is also carried out, which is used to make identification catalogues to track their progress. “The conservation methods are carried out at a distance, we do not handle or disturb the animals”, confirms Mercedes Muñoz. She also says that “on a few occasions we do get close to them in order to place a GPS transmitter. We do this carefully. It is best to enjoy their presence from a distance and leave them in peace”.

The monk seal, peaceful by nature, protective of its privacy and incredibly curious, is no traveller. “It usually stays close to the place it was born and feeds on what it catches in the waters close to the coast”, says the expert. It likes warm water and relaxing in the sun with its pup.

A pleasant and almost idyllic life if its survival could be ensured.

Las grandes colonias han vivido en bancos de arena de playas a cielo abierto. Pero debido a la destrucción de este hábitat y a la persecución sufrida por parte de cazadores que comerciaban con sus pieles y grasas en las lonjas de los puertos, ahora se concentran en cuevas inaccesibles y recónditas. Las hembras pueden empezar a reproducirse a partir de los tres años. Tienen una cría anual y el periodo abarca de abril a noviembre.

E N G A VERY CURIOUS ANIMAL. The male can weigh up to 300 kilos and measures about three metres. The female is slightly smaller. When they are born, the pups measure one metre, they have black fur and a white stripe on their belly with a pattern of black spots which is exclusive to each animal and different for males and females. Adult females are always grey, while the males’ fur is black. They feed on fish, crustaceans and cephalopods. Large colonies used to live on sand banks on beaches out in the open. But because of the destruction of their habitat and persecution from hunters who sold their fur and fat at the port markets, they are now concentrated in inaccessible and secluded caves. The females can start to reproduce from the age of three. They have one pup a year between April and November.

La reserva de las focas El programa de conservación de la foca monje del Mediterráneo surgió del acuerdo firmado por los cuatro países que han tenido y tienen presencia de este animal (España, Marruecos, Mauritania y Portugal), bajo el marco de protección de la Convención sobre la Conservación de las especies migratorias salvajes. Se están siguiendo varias líneas de actuación, que están dando los primeros frutos: 1. Esta reserva sirve para proteger la zona donde se haya la especie y contrarrestar las amenazas terrestres y marinas.

2. Seguimiento de las medidas de conservación y ver qué puntos hay que mejorar para que la población siga aumentando.

3. Divulgación para implicar a la población en la conservación de la especie.

4. Resultado final: en 2017 nacieron 71 ejemplares.

The Mediterranean monk seal conservation programme arose from an agreement signed by the four countries where this animal has lived and continues to live (Spain, Morocco, Mauritania and Portugal), under the protective framework of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals. Various lines of action are being followed, which are beginning to bear fruit: 1. This reserve protects the area where the species is found and counters threats from the land and the sea.

2. Monitoring of conservation methods and to see which points need to be improved for the population to increase.

3. Dissemination to involve people in the conservation of this species.

4. Final result: in 2017, 71 pups were born.

A sea of fashion The nautical style has jumped ship and is marching up the high street. Because the sea has always been synonymous with holidays and freedom and, as far as fashion is concerned, with good taste too.

veces, para respirar la brisa del mar basta con abrir nuestro armario. Porque cada temporada se cuelan en él las más diversas prendas que, gracias a sus cortes, colores y estampados, nos hacen sumergirnos en océanos imaginados donde la libertad, la belleza y la comodidad cobran protagonismo, ¡aunque vivamos tierra adentro! No importa el género ni la edad que tengamos: sin duda, en nuestro álbum de fotos habrá alguna instantánea donde luzcamos camisetas y jerséis con diseños de rayas, nudos náuticos, barcos, timones y, por supuesto, anclas; chaquetas y abrigos de botonadura metálica, y hasta gorras y viseras que nos ha convertido en ocasionales grumetes y marineros. La moda navy nos sigue enamorando, siendo una tendencia que se reinventa (y triunfa), a pesar de llevar más de dos siglos formando parte de nuestro guardarropa.

Quién le iba a decir a un capitán de navío de la Royal Navy, en plena Inglaterra victoriana, allá por 1837, que su idea de uniformar a la tripulación con una chaqueta de sarga azul con ribetes blancos y botones de metal acabaría originando una auténtica revolución estilística que aún pervive. Los franceses no podían quedarse atrás en cuestión de novedades; por eso, a ellos se les atribuye, durante el II Imperio, otro hallazgo estético: la incorporación a la vestimenta de su personal de flota de un sencillo jersey sin botonadura –para evitar que se engancharan cabos y cuerdas, y provocaran accidentes– estampado con rayas bicolores (en blanco y azul intenso) para distinguirlos en el mar si, desafortunadamente, alguno caía por la borda. Y lo que comenzó siendo una indumentaria militar pronto se convirtió en una prenda muy cómoda y útil para aquellos hombres que vivían de la pesca.

E N G Sometimes we just have to open our wardrobes to breathe the sea air. Because in there, even if we are landlubbers, we will find a variety of garments whose design, colour and patterns will take us to imaginary oceans where freedom, beauty and comfort take centre stage! It doesn’t matter whether we are old or young, male or female: our photo albums will show pictures of us sporting t-shirts and jumpers with stripes, nautical knots, boats, ship’s wheels and, of course, anchors; jackets and coats with metallic buttons, and even caps and visors that make us look like part-time cabin boys or sailors. We continue to fall in love with the nautical look, a trend which is constantly being reinvented (successfully), despite being a part of our wardrobe for over two centuries.

aptain, my captain! Who would have thought that the uniform created by a Victorian Captain in the Royal Navy, in around 1837, consisting of a blue serge jacket with white trim and metal buttons, would end up creating a genuine style revolution that continues to this day? And the French were not far behind in fashion innovations; they have been credited, during the Second Empire, with another style discovery: the clothing of the staff in their fleet included a simple jersey without buttons -to avoid tangling with ropes and causing accidents printed with two colour stripes (in white and dark blue) so they could be spotted in the sea if they were unlucky enough to fall overboard. And what started life as a military garment quickly became a very comfortable and useful item of clothing for the men who lived off fishing.

It would take the appearance of a m ave r i ck v i s i o n a r y i n t h e wo rl d of fashion, in the XX century, to bring this masculine style into the wardrobes of the French upper class. And this person was Coco Chanel.

She was fascinated by the dress of the fishermen in Deauville, the coastal town where she set up her second workshop. Hence, her collections

Once Coco had set the ball rolling, the fashion world filled up with nautical accessories, designs and patterns. For some designers like Cristóbal Balenciaga, the nautical inspiration was a vital rather than formal question: her father was a sailor and the surroundings of her native Guetaria (Guipuzcoa) were part of her fashion designer DNA. And on a totally cool diversion, it is now possible to visit her museum by travelling by boat from San Sebastian to the city where the genius of couture was born. Christian Dior, Lanvin and Givenchy also succumbed to the siren’s songs of this style, using the quintessential nautical colours (blue, white and red) or its distinctive prints.

However, it would be the unconventional Yves Saint Laurent who, like Coco Chanel, borrowed another garment from this field: in this case, the pea coat, a double-breasted, dark blue coat worn by sailors and which, in his hands, was turned into one of his iconic garments.

Cada nueva temporada, todos nos convertimos un poco en marineros por obra y gracia de firmas como Hugo Boss, Ralph Lauren, Barbour o Hunter, entre otras; basta echar un vistazo a sus propuestas primavera/verano 2018 para comprobarlo.

Los diseñadores españoles no escapan a esta tendencia: algunos rescatan su pantone, como El Ganso; otros, sus motivos más emblemáticos, como Ángel Schlesser. O las bellas Brigitte Bardot y Sofia Loren con aires marineros (y tacones imposibles) en la costa francesa. Por no hablar de Grace Kelly, que pasó parte de su luna de miel con Raniero de Mónaco a bordo de un yate, o de Jackie Kennedy, que hasta se casó con un armador como Onassis… Con tan espléndidos patronos, ¿cómo no rendirnos al estilo náutico?

A clear declaration of intent!

If there is one designer who put (and continues to put) nautical culture on the pedestal of fashion, it is Jean-Paul Gaultier. Only he could have brought the voluptuous sailors who filled the novel, Querelle de Brest, by Jean Genet, to the catwalk and even to male bathrooms thanks to his Le Male perfume.

oday, just like yesterday. Anyone who thinks that nautical style is a thing of the past is mistaken. Each new season, we all find our inner sailor because of the work of companies including Hugo Boss, Ralph Lauren, Barbour and Hunter; check it out by looking at their offerings for Spring/Summer 2018. And Spanish designers have not escaped this trend either: some like El Ganso use its colours; others, like Ángel Schlesser, use its most emblematic patterns. And some, like Ecoalf, look to the future of the planet; its jackets, cagoules or sneakers are made from plastic retrieved from the seas and oceans, in an attempt to make the Earth a more sustainable place.

This very elegant and sophisticated wave has lapped at the toes of the most famous people in the world. Following temporary closure for maintenance and the installation of air-conditioning, the permanent exhibition of the Porto Pí lighthouse is back brighter than ever and with some new additions. From now on, by appointment, it will also be possible to visit the lighthouse at weekends; it is open from Wednesday to Saturday, between 10:00 and 14:00.

The visits take place in groups of 20, in Catalan, Spanish or English. As a new option, visitors can now sign up individually without having to be part of a group and the organiser of the exhibition will be responsible for confirming the visit.

a decoración es otro apartado en el que los objetos de otras épocas toman protagonismo en el centro de Palma. Quizá la más importante es Frida Watson (Annibal, 5), una tienda donde muebles, lámparas, alfombras, cerámica, candelabros o cojines pueblan el espacio, haciendo especial hincapié a los diseños danés, inglés, sueco, alemán y español. Serie B (Can Escursac, 14) cuenta con gran variedad de objetos fechados desde principios del siglo XX, con especial atención a la década de los cincuenta.

Incluso, puedes alquilar en vez de comprar sus productos si los quieres para una ocasión única. A estas dos propuestas, añadir La Pecera (Victoria, 4), con objetos del siglo XX, incluidos accesorios de piel como zapatos, cuadernos o pufs, combinados con cerámica, sombreros, hamacas o alpargatas hechas en Mallorca.

spacios con historia. La tendencia por la estética de ayer recupera lugares emblemáticos como La Industrial (Pas d’en Quint, 8), una juguetería que la familia Aguiló compró en 1929, aunque existen documentos que demuestran su dedicación a la diversión de los más pequeños ya en 1898.

En cuanto a la gastronomía, bares y restaurantes retoman esta tradición estética y sus estancias parecen refugiarse con mucho gusto en el pasado. El Bar Flexas (Llotgeta, 12), regentado por Pepa Charro, La Terremoto de Alcorcón, es ideal para comer o tomar algo en una estética de otra época. En pleno corazón del céntrico barrio de Sa Gerreria, el bar Rita (Plaza Batle Llorenç Bisbal, 13) ofrece sus clásicas raciones de ensaladilla rusa, sepia o llonguets (pequeños bocadillos con pan tradicional mallorquín). La Rosa Vermutería (La Rosa, 5) es un local a la antigua usanza, con barra de mármol, ultramarinos, jamón al corte y vermú de grifo; o la Vermutería Vi.Xet (Can Sanç, 7). Y si de vintage hablamos, el Café L’Antiquari (Arabi, 5) es el mejor representante de este concepto, un sitio lleno de antigüedades y mesas con míticas máquinas de coser Singer.

Imposible no llevar en el ADN los intensos colores de su cielo, su vegetación, su mar, su espíritu repleto de calma y de autenticidad. Como el lugar donde transcurrió su infancia, la diseñadora Helena Rohner (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1968) emana una elegancia natural, sin artificios. Soñaba con ser botánica marina hasta que, durante un año sabático en Florencia –a la espera de iniciar la carrera de Ciencias Políticas en Londres–, se matriculó en un taller de joyería. La oceanografía perdió una investigadora; quién sabe si los ciudadanos perdieron una gran política, pero el mundo del diseño ganó una de sus figuras más relevantes. Sus piezas de joyería están presentes en museos como el Thyssen, el Victoria & Albert, el Guggenheim o la Tate Modern. Su gusto exquisito traspasa fronteras; también los formatos en los que expresa su imaginación. A sus colecciones de joyería, Rohner añade un particular universo de objetos para el hogar: juegos para el té, jarrones, vajillas, lámparas, alfombras… Piezas que conviven con sus pulseras, anillos o collares y en las que también es posible encontrar sus raíces canarias.

To the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts, she now adds a new distinction: the Can de Plata de las Artes, awarded by the City Hall of Gran Canaria.

E N G Growing up on an island like Gran Canaria shapes your character. It is impossible not to carry in your DNA the intense colours of the sky, the sea and its peaceful and genuine spirit. Like the place where she spent her childhood, the designer Helena Rohner (Las Palmas, 1968) emanates a natural and unaffected elegance. She dreamed of being a marine biologist until, in a year out in Florence -before starting her Political Science course in London- she enrolled in a jewellery workshop. Oceanography lost a researcher; who knows whether we also lost a great politician, but the world of design gained one of its most important personalities. Her pieces of jewellery are on display in museums like the Thyssen, the Victoria & Albert, the Guggenheim and Tate Modern. Her exquisite taste transcends borders, as does the formats she uses to express

Lleva 25 años en Madrid. ¿Aún echa de menos el mar?

Por supuesto. Haber crecido en Canarias hace que estés conectado con lo natural. El mar siempre presente, tan lleno de energía. Sus paisajes absolutos, con un cielo azul muy claro; el verde de la vegetación tan brillante; la tierra, muy marrón. Por no hablar del aire de las islas, con una humedad salada que te abraza en sí… Llevo fuera de mi tierra desde que tenía 16 años y la echo mucho de menos.

¿Qué tienen sus diseños de todas esas sensaciones?

Mis piezas son, como el carácter canario, honestas, sin trucos: son lo que ves, aunque con cierta profundidad de lectura. No se trata de piezas bidimensionales, sino de formas orgánicas, respetuosas, ergonómicas, sin aristas, aunque muestren volúmenes claros y contundentes. Esa depuración tiene que ver con mi búsqueda de la esencia.

También con la pureza del paisaje donde crecí.

Crea joyas y objetos cotidianos que luego formarán parte de la vida de otros...

Cuando acabo una pieza es como si la soltara, como si ya no fuera mía. A partir de ahí, pertenece a quienes la han elegido. Quizá mis diseños no resulten epatantes a primera vista, pero, al final, se convierten en parte de ti.

El suyo es un estilo depurado, ajeno a gustos efímeros.

Por supuesto, estoy al día de las tendencias y vendo en el mundo de la moda, pero intento ser fiel a mi estilo, con peso propio, más allá de las modas. Hago piezas para que duren, digamos que son “atemporalmente sensatas”.

¿Diseña con igual filosofía joyas y objetos cotidianos?

El diseño es un arte aplicado al día a día. Tienes que pensar cómo se usa y cómo puedes producir esa pieza. Juego con esas limitaciones, y lo hago dentro de la sobriedad.

¿Y qué relación guarda con sus joyas?

Llevo mis propias piezas, aunque no muchas: cada temporada puedo hacer unas 80, pero solo me quedo con una o dos. Además, no suelo cambiar mucho de joyas: de hecho, algunas no me las quito nunca. Porque de lo que se trata es de que expresen, en cierta forma, parte de tu personalidad.

You have been in Madrid for 25 years. Do you miss the sea?

Of course I do. Growing up in the Canary Islands means you have a connection to the natural. The sea is always present, and full of energy. Its absolute scenery, with clear blue skies; the bright green of the vegetation: the brown of the earth. Not to mention the air of the islands… I have been away from my country since I was 16 and I miss it a lot.

How are these feelings reflected in your designs?

My pieces are honest and straightforward: they are as they appear although they have a certain depth. They are not two-dimensional pieces, but organic, respectful, ergonomic, without edges, although they have clear and substantial volume. This purification has to do with my search for the essence and with the purity of the countryside where I grew up.

You create jewellery and everyday items that will then be part of other people’s lives...

When I finish a piece it is like releasing it, as if is no longer mine. It then belongs to whoever has chosen it. My designs might not be striking at first glance, but, they end up becoming a part of you.

Your style is a pared-down style...

I keep abreast of trends and I sell in the world of fashion, but I try to remain true to my style, with its individual character, outside fashion. I make pieces that last, let’s say that they are “timelessly discerning”.

What is your philosophy in designing?

Design is an art applied to the everyday. You have to think how it will be used and how you can produce the piece. I play with these limitations.

What relationship do you have towards your jewellery?

I wear my own pieces, although not many: each season I make about 80 pieces, but I only keep one or two.
