CAREERS

Here we are again at the end of another busy year! As usual, it has flown by in a whirl of events, speakers, discussions, options and applications. The Upper Sixth have been celebrating all of their fabulous university offers and they have worked hard for their A level exams. Meanwhile, the Fifth Form have also been revising diligently for their GCSE’s and we look forward to welcoming many of them back to commence their Sixth Form studies in September.

The Fourth Form and Lower Sixth enjoyed a successful Futures Day, when a number of speakers (mostly Prior’s Field alumnae) came in to give talks about their industries. The students each chose which four talks they would like to attend on a carousel system. Our thanks to all of the speakers who gave their time so generously to inspire our students.

If you would like to have a chat about Careers or your subject options then please contact Mrs Wilson, Head of Careers - by popping into the Careers Office, or Huxley House, or send her an email at kwilson@priorsfieldschool.com

Most unusual jobs!

There was recently a phone-in on Radio 2 about the most unusual jobs people have. What unusual jobs have you heard of? Would you fancy any of the following?

 Waxwork wig stylist

 Shark spotter

 Rollercoaster designer

 Emoji translator

 Tank driving instructor

What skills do you think you would need to become a Shark Spotter or an Emoji translator?

Please let Mrs Wilson know if you have heard of any other unusual jobs which we could feature in a future issue!

Competencies and Skills – Decisiveness

Hmmm.... Should I have the pasta or the pizza? Go bowling or to the cinema? To the beach or to the pool? How good are you at making decisions?! It can be tricky to work out what to do in our day-to-day lives, and these decision-making skills are also needed at work: Shall I make this product red or blue? High price or low price? Big or small? According to the jobs website Indeed, developing the following skills should help you to improve your decision making: Problem Solving, Leadership, Logical Reasoning, Intuition, Teamwork, Emotional Intelligence, Creativity, Time Management and Conflict Resolution. Read more about it on this link: https://uk.indeed.com/career-advice/careerdevelopment/decision-making-skills

STAFF FOCUS

NATHALIE EL RAÏANI

In each edition we hear from a member of staff about their career journey and find out what they have to say about how and why they are in the job they are today. In this edition, we will hear from Mrs el Raïani, French and Spanish teacher:

Have you always been a teacher? If not, what else have you done and what was it like?

Before training as a teacher, I had a career in Public Relations and Events Organisation. I was working for the French Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong helping the French Business community to do business in China. The role was super exciting as I was encouraging people to meet, connect and create opportunities with a vast array of nationalities and government officials.

What skills do you think helped you to succeed in your career?

I was very fortunate to benefit from a University exchange with Paris X Université and UCL to spend six months in London. This really challenging experience (I could hardly speak English at the time), gave me the resilience and confidence to want to explore and discover new cultures, new countries, new languages... For me, it is important to keep an open mind and reach for opportunities.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

When you are growing up, you have dreams ...Those dreams might seem unattainable ...But you can do it! Have a dream and keep at it!

What do you love about your current job?

I love my job because I get to support young people to understand the world a bit better through different cultures and languages,

I love my job because I get to see young people becoming wonderful young adults,

I love my job because I get to work with the best people!

WORK EXPERIENCE

Make the Summer count!

It is wonderful to break up at the end of term and be thinking ahead to what you will do with your time off. This is a chance to go exploring and have new adventures. It is also a brilliant chance to undertake some work experience. Whether it is in a career in which you might like to work one day or something unrelated, you will develop key employability skills. You could ask your family, friends or contacts if you could spend some time at work with them, or approach companies which you find particularly interesting. There are also opportunities to do free on-line Work Experience through websites such as Springpod – you can even print off a certificate at the end to include in any future applications. Give it a go and see what you can learn from it!

Featured Qualification: Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL)

Many of our Lower Sixth spent a weekend taking a qualification in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). This is an internationally recognised qualification which enables students to teach English both in the United Kingdom and abroad.

This was an exciting opportunity for them to enhance their CV and develop skills to make them stand out when applying for higher education and future careers. Further information about the course can be found by looking at the UK-TEFL website on www.UK-TEFL.com

Having pursued further studies in the United States, Kay Badenhuizen relished the many opportunities this presented to her, settled in Arizona and is now at a leading global consultancy in the Forensic Accounting Team.
