Over the past few months, you may have seen or heard a rather strange sounding word being used around our synagogue: Ayekah. Ayekah, the question God asked Adam, who was attempting to hide in the Garden of Eden, seems simple at first: Where are you?

It turns out that God’s question, ‘Where are you?’ was anything but simple, since it was never just a question of location. The question posed to Adam was about his mindset, his hopes and his dreams.

We are all ‘adam,’ human beings, and this question is one that warrants consideration from every one of us. Where are you? What is your mindset?

What are your hopes and dreams? We are living in a challenging time and for many, life is complicated. We, as a Temple Menorah community, want to know where you, the members of this community, are ‘at,’ and how Judaism and your synagogue can best be a source of meaning, enrichment and belonging.

Ayekah. Please consider participating in a ‘Coming Together Conversation’ in the coming months (see page 4 for details) so that you can begin to answer some of these essential questions. Only then can we ensure that, moving forward, here at Temple Menorah, it is all “coming together.”

R O S EN B ER G CU LT U R AL C ENTER Tuesdays at 11:00am (unless otherwise noted) The Rosenberg Cultural Center provides social, educational, and cultural programs for seniors and other adults. We offer a wide range of activities, from lectures on Jewish history to presentations on health issues, from hands-on art projects to viewing and discussing Israeli films, from interfaith guest speakers to field trips throughout Los Angeles. We also enjoy occasional joint sessions with our friends at Tuvia preschool.

We also participate in the Better Together Intergenerational Program with the B’nai Mitzvah class at Temple Menorah. The seniors get together with the students once per month, alternating Wednesdays and Saturdays, to learn about each other, study Torah and celebrate Shabbat, and create an intergenerational community. These programs include either lunch or dinner and are free of charge.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL SPECIAL PROGRAMS FAMILY EDUCATION PROGRAMS The Family Education Program brings together students and their parents to explore topics in Jewish values, history, and practice. The goal is to empower families to participate in their children’s educational experience at Temple Menorah through interactive, meaningful programs that enhance Jewish experiences at Temple and at home.

Each grade will participate in a Field Trip to the Skirball Cultural Center to take advantage of the amazing, interactive permanent and temporary exhibits. Parents are encouraged to attend! Exhibits will include: Noah’s Ark, Visions and Values, and Notorious RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Hinei mah tov u’manayim shevet achim gam yachad – how great it is when friends sit together, or in this case, sleep over at the Temple! In lieu of a retreat, students are invited to celebrate Shabbat at the Temple and then be “locked in” for an exciting overnight full of food, fun, and friends!

Shabbat is always special when our learning community comes together to celebrate! Gabe’s project is in benefit of https://www.goalshaiti.org . Gabe will be collecting soccer gear to send to this organization in Haiti and this community in need.

SAMUEL TELLER - January 26 ALEXANDRA DREYER - February 2

For the love of country and dog, Alex’s bat mitzvah project supported Dogs on Deployment, an organization that helps find fosters for military pets while their owners are deployed. Her project included several elements, including community outreach and education, and culminated at Race for Rescues in October 2018, where she built awareness of the organization and raised money for rescue animals.

MOLLY GOLPER - Februrary 9

Molly is a dancer, so she wants to collect gently worn Ballet and Jazz dance shoes and donate to Foot Loose. She’s going to put up flyers at her local dance studios and collect the shoes to give to those who cannot afford to buy new ones.

ZOE HELPHAND - February 16

Zoe created hand painted flower pots and baked goods to sell in order to raise money to help rebuild Camp Hess Kramer and Hilltop. The camps were destroyed in the Woolsey fires in November. Zoe has been a camper there for four summers. Her mom and grandmother are also Camp alum.

ALEXANDER WHITE - February 23

Hunger Never Stops! We are having a food drive after the holidays for those in need.

Tikkun Olam Social Action Committee The goal of the Tikkun Olam Social Action Committee (TOSAC) is to translate Jewish beliefs and practices into action and to fix what is broken in our society. The committee does this by promoting opportunities for Temple members to commit to and integrate charitable actions (mitzvot) into their daily lives. Kids Night Out is an entertaining program for children ages 2 to 6th grade.

KNO takes place once a month on a Saturday evening from 5:30pm to 10:30pm. Parents drop their children off at Temple Menorah and head out for a night of fun.

Children participating in the program take part in arts and crafts, storytelling, cooking, musical physical activities, and an entertaining age appropriate movie at the end of the evening. We provide a healthy dinner with fruit or vegetables and a delicious dessert.
