Warmest greetings from the capital city of the United States of

America, Washington District of Columbia – the home of the United Federation of Fil-Am Educators (UNIFFIED) – Washington DC Chapter and the host for this year’s 5th International Education Summit, Gala and Awards Night!

As president of the Washington DC chapter, it is my pleasure to welcome all attendees who have travelled near and far to join us for this weekend’s festivities. I would also like to thank and congratulate each of you for participating in our biggest event of the year.

For over 50 years now, Filipino-American teachers in the United States continue to impart their knowledge, teaching skills and abilities, influence and make significant contributions by educating generations of American students and help sustain the world class standards of the American educational system, especially here in the Nation’s capital. Filipino teachers and educators are worldclass professionals and stationed in various countries around the world –with America being one of the favorite destinations to work.

I encourage all of you to continue the legacy of delivering quality education services with the same level of commitment that has defined our revered profession. Let us continue to be open-minded, vibrant, optimistic and grateful about the blessings of our career; embracing both the rewards of the challenges that come along with educating children. I encourage all of you to take all chances and possibilities, and never stop dreaming in your quest for success. Continue to pursue the best life for yourself and your family and be an agent for development and positive change within your respective communities. By all means, take the chances to achieve excellence in our profession, live a meaningful and enjoyable life, and always remember what propelled our interest in this greatly important calling – to mold the minds and nurture the hearts of children.

I am very honored, grateful and feel delighted that you are here at the Nation’s Capital for this very special and memorable occasion. During your stay, take all the chances to visit schools and other educational institutions, the historic and world-famous tourist spots of the Metropolitan Washington DC area, and take advantage and immerse yourself in everything that this world-famous city has to offer.

DR. AL RABANERA UNIFFIED Community Leadership Award Excellence in Education Award 2018

Dr. Rabanera is committed to taking action and finding a resolution to the challenge of teacher shortages in our community. With 14 years of teaching experience, Dr. Al Rabanera is a passionate advocate for growth, stability, and success for those who are currently in, or considering the teaching profession. Through his work, Dr. Rabanera actively assists in the development and implementation of new programs that promote the retention of current teachers and encourage new generations of students to pursue careers in teaching.

Dr. Rabanera heads a team of teachers, administrators, and Students California Teacher Association (CTA) members in the “Cultivating Teacher Leaders: A Progressive Approach to Growing and Diversifying the Teaching Profession in California” project. This project is an essential component of the Instructional Leadership Corps, a partnership between CTA and Stanford University. The Instructional Leadership Corps fosters teacher-driven professional development, and has created programs to mitigate the shortage and diversify the profession. Dr. Rabanera receive an NEA Great Public Schools Fund Grant of $250,000 to continue development of the program; $100,000 of the total is earmarked for student scholarship for high school and college /university mentorship programs.

Dr. Rabanera’s innovate ways extend to his own teaching. He draws from a broad array of instructional strategies to help students visualize mathematics. As a result of his efforts, he was one of five educators to receive the NEA Foundation’s Horace Mann Award for Teaching Excellence, based on the creative implementation of technology in the classroom.

In addition to his advocacy work, Dr. Rabanera is an active member of the California Teachers Association, a member of the Instructional Leadership Corps, and a Core Advocate and Peer Support Provider for teachers across three counties. He facilitates the North Orange County Think Tank for the Institute for Teaching and also serves on the Board of Directors for North Orange County United Teachers, as well as on the Board of Directors for the Council of Accreditation for Educator Preparation.

Dr. Al Rabanera currently is a high school math educator and serves as the Mathematics Department Chair at La Vista High School in the Fullerton Joint Union High School District.

DR. CRUZIM P. CUERQUEZ UNIFFIED Salindunong Award 2018 Gawad Ulirang Guro Award 2018

Dr. Cruzim is a dedicated and self-motivated AP Calculus and Pre Calculus teacher of Sylmar Charter High School – Math and Science Technology Magnet - A Top 10% in 2017 Best High Schools in the USA and a Silver Medalist Honoree at Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), Los Angeles, California, USA. He was a recipient of the following scholarship grants such as Sec. Guillermo de Vega Engineering Scholarship Grants, Nicanor Reyes Scholarship Foundation, Gerry Roxas Leadership Scholarship Foundation, Xavier University-Department of Science and Technology Scholarship, University of the Philippines Physics and Department of Education Scholarship Grant to name a few.

Dr. Cruzim is also known for his philanthropic work. He regularly visits the Philippines to conduct trainings and workshops that will enhance the skills of his fellow educators. He also contributes educational materials to disadvantaged schools in Mindanao and provide livelihood projects to his community. His good heart, hard work and great contribution in the field of Mathematics and philanthropism here and abroad were not left unnoticed.He was a recipient of several awards such as Department of Science and Technology Most Accurate Mathematician, Philippines-Australia Science and Mathematics Education Project (PASMEP) Most Accurate Mathematician, UP Mathematical Society of the Philippines Outstanding Math Teacher of the Year, and UNIFFIED awardee for two consecutive years.

Dr. Cruzim is a firm believer of Jean Piaget’s philosophy of education that “The principal goal of education is to create men who are capable of doing new things not simply repeating what other generations have done.”

MARY ANN PALENCIA UNIFFIED Chapter Founder Award Community Leadership Award

Mary Ann Palencia graduated in 2003 with a double-degree course of Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education, major in Science as a CHED-CITE full scholarship at Philippine Normal University in Manila.

She became very active in different organizations in the campus which equipped her to become a better educator. She was involved in an arts, academic, drama clubs, and became the editorial cartoonist, literary editor and Associate Editor in Filipino at the Torch Publication in her university. With her busy schedule, she still found time to teach homeless children for the Sta. Cruz Street Children Program. She also finished Bachelor of Arts, major in Special Education at Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila.

Mrs. Palencia moved to California in 2006 to achieve her dream of supporting her family and have her own educational foundation for low income Filipino students. Currently, she is providing scholarships to students from elementary to college and sends educational materials and equipment in the Philippines. She hopes that her foundation will become better establish and serve more students and schools in the future.

With her hard work, dedication and volunteerism, Los Angeles High School awarded her with Principal’s Award of Excellence. She was also a UNIFFIED awardee in 2015 and 2016. She is the founder of UNIFFIED Los Angeles-Orange County Chapter and its current president. The chapter was founded in 2016 with more than 100 members and counting. She is currently teaching Biology and Academy subjects while serving as an adviser of the Science Club and Future Educators Club at La Vista High School. She has been happily married for 9 years and has 2 adorable children.

MARVIN MATABALAN ENDERES UNIFFIED International Educators Award of Excellence

Mr. Enderes is a well known author, campus journalism adviser, teacher and coach in the Philippines and abroad. As a very versatile, creative and talented educator, he was thankful to his alma mater, Philippine Normal University where he finished his triple degree courses of Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in English. As The Torch publication editor-in-chief, PNU bestowed him the Graciano Lopez Jaena Award in Campus Journalism and graduated as cum laude in 2003.

In recognition of his consistent and exceptional performance in the annual National Schools Press Conference and valuable contribution in campus journalism, he was hailed by the Department of Education as Outstanding School Paper Adviser in the Philippines in 2015. He was a head teacher, communication arts teacher, campus journalism coach, and press relations and communications officer of Colegio San Agustin Makati, where he worked for fourteen years.

Expanding his educative mission abroad, Mr. Enderes is currently a faculty member of the English Department of Macau Anglican College, which implements Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education. He is a textbook writer and lecturer in various fields and facilitator in team-building and leadership workshops.

NERISSA BUNDOC-DIZON UNIFFIED Salindunong Award 2018 Rising through the Challenge of Excellence in Education Award

Nerissa Bundoc-Dizon joined the UP College of Education with a firm belief that teaching is a noble profession that entails a great responsibility, as well as an enormous power, in molding the minds and hearts of the youth. She was a recipient of UP College of Education Faculty-Alumni Association Scholarship.

In 1997, the Philippine Math Olympiad recognized Mrs. Dizon as an outstanding math coach for helping her students win at the national level. She received her master’s degree in Mathematics from De la Salle University-Dasmariñas in 2004. For seven years, she taught college math until the opportunity to join the LAUSD came in 2006. Her universal concept of teaching the youth has helped her see beyond diverse cultural backgrounds and academic abilities of her students in the US. While at Sylmar High School, she helped students exceed district average with AGT overall result of 3.7 and 3.2 in Geometry and Algebra II Standardized Tests, respectively, for school year 2010-2013. These results helped boost the school’s API score by 32 points. She is currently teaching at Valley Alternative Magnet School as a math teacher.

As a way of giving back, Mrs. Dizon has shared her resources to support Filipino students through her personal financial support, through a scholarship initiative of her high school alma mater, and through the Commission on Filipino Overseas. In 2009, she donated math resources to Caloocan High School and mentored their math teachers on the use of technology in teaching math. In 2016, she received a Service Award from the UNIFFIED for her thirty-three years of teaching experience. In 2017, she joined her peers at UNIFFIED and gave an inspirational talk to fellow Filipino teachers in Manila who aspire to teach in the US.

DINAH DIMAANO JOCSON UNIFFIED Salindunong Award 2018 Excellence in Education Award 2018

Dinah was an Algebra and Geometry teacher at Makati High School before she got an employment with Los Angeles Unified School District. For eleven years now and counting, Dinah has been called to teach 7th, 8th and Algebra 1 students at Richard E. Byrd Middle School, and Algebra 1 at Francis Polytechnic Senior High School in the summer.

Following her completion of Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics at Batangas State University, she obtained a Certificate for Teaching Purposes at Philippine Normal University. She then furthered her study with a Masteral in Management at the Technological University of the Philippines. In the USA, she earned a distinction at UCLA extension where she was given a Certificate of Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language; and completed the Gifted and Talented Education at UCSD Extension.

Having witnessed her students’ struggle in learning the common core of Mathematics,inspired with the passion to educate her beloved students, she pursued to further her education at California State University , Northridge where she is now completing a Master in Mathematics Instruction for Secondary Education.With her dedication and sheer perseverance, Dinah was nominated as a UTLA Platinum Apple Awardee in 2013 and LAUSD Teacher of the Year in 2018. She was also awarded with anACC Math 7 Humanities Academy Students Batch 2014-15, given by Jane Goodall Institute for dedication to inflict positive change in people, animals and in the environment. Additionally, her team was also recognized as the Most Outstanding PowerSave Team in 2013-14 by the Department of Education Alliance to Save Energy, PowerSave Schools and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.

JAL LABILLES RAVAL Excellence in Education Award Leadership in Education Award

Jal Raval had always strived hard to find creative solutions to recurring problems in the schools she has worked at since securing her bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education from Philippine Normal University. In 2005, she co authored a science gradebook series called ‘Science Works!’ that circulated elementary public schools in the Philippines while completing her first Master degree at De La Salle University. As part of the Foundation of Upgrading Science Education she designed and facilitated professional development workshops and seminars in various regions of the country to equip science teachers with global trends in science learning that met students’ diverse needs. She believes that equipping teachers with the appropriate tools in supporting their students through meaningful professional development, curriculum planning and implementation students can take their adversities in life and use them as fuel to propel themselves forward. In 2006, she collaborated with renowned brain anatomist, Marian Diamond at the University of California, Berkeley to deeply understand how meaningful learning activities affect the growth of dendrites of the brain. She received high honors for her work at the completion of her Masters degree in School Leadership at the College of Saint Rose in New York.

Jal is an educator in the South Bronx and currently working on her Doctorate degree at American College of Education. Finding a close affinity to recently immigrated students, she designs lessons does not only access the scientific concepts but also gain language proficiency through the process. She remains at the international high school network for the same reason that had lead her to pursue education as a lifelong career in the first place. Seeing herself in the students’ situation of having big dreams with little resources, she continues to support the variety of educational experiences the curriculum demands. She is a certified CFG coach by the National School Reform Faculty (NSRF) and has organized various events that foster scientific inquiry in her school and different organizations and takes an active role in the community by supporting scholarships and feeding programs in different schools in her native country. Ensuring the presence of positive adult role models in their lives they can be resilient and eventually be successful in finding their niche in the community. Jal is a mother to three beautiful children; Jomar, Joses and Jireh and a wife to a loving husband, Michael.

DIVINA P. BROWNE Chapter Founder Award Leadership in Education Award

Divina Browne is the Math Instructional Specialist at Eisenhower HS in Aldine ISD in Houston, TX As a member of the school’s Instructional Leadership Team, she works closely with building and district administrators to develop and implement instructional and intervention programs. Certified as a Master Mathematics Teacher, and as a K-12 Principal, she’s an aspiring administrator, who dreams of leading a school one day. Her first-hand experience as an administrator was in June 2016 when she was invited to serve as an assistant principal for summer school. As an instructional coach, she works alongside teachers and PLC teams to improve instruction for student achievement. She is also a district curriculum writer and presenter. Before becoming a department head, she taught Precalculus, IB Math, Geometry & Algebra 2 for many years while also serving as team leader.

Driven by her passion and advocacy for equity and quality education for minorities, she has taken time to present in many conferences such as the Region 4 Math Conference in 2017, the Conference for the Advancement of Mathematics Teaching (Houston) in 2012 and 2015, and the technology conference in Hawaii in 2010. She had also served as a Master Teacher trainer for the Rice University School Mathematics Project (RUSMP) for Spring ISD in 2014, and for the RUSMP Mathematics Leadership Institute for lead math teachers in 2009 and 2010. All these hard work did not go unrecognized when she was voted Teacher of the Year in 2012, and won the 2013 Leadership in Education Award Program (LEAP) for Teachers, sponsored by the MIT Club of South Texas. Her prize was a scholarship for a weeklong training at MIT along with a select group of other educators, fellow LEAP awardees from all over the U. S. and the world. She was also an NSF-NOYCE Scholar from 2009 to 2012 and a semifinalist for the statewide HEB Excellence in Education Award in 2012.

Divina earned a BS Physics degree from the University of Northern Philippines. She was finishing her MST in Physics at the De La Salle University and teaching Physics at St. Paul College Paranaque when a friend coerced her to interview for a teaching job in the United States. Initially, she thought this was a hoax, but she went anyway. After passing all the requirements and satisfying all qualifications, she came to the U. S. with big dreams in 2001. Despite two job offers, she still couldn’t believe that it was possible for her to come to the U. S. as a high school teacher. At the risk of sounding cliché, Divina believes that yes, dreams do come true. She is happily married to Alan Browne, also a high school teacher. They have two very beautiful daughters named Asia and Danielle.

KARLENE GRACE PARRENO-BINUYA National Board Certified Teacher English as a New Language Early and Middle Childhood

Grace arrived in the United States in 1995 after the winter storm in NYC. She has just graduated from her degree, Bachelor of Science major in General Science as Cum Laude at the Philippine Normal University. To pursue her career, she applied at PAL Western Queens Nursery School and enrolled herself in a master’s program for Early Childhood Education at City College. Having taught for couple of years in the same job, Grace took the opportunity of getting her city and state licenses in her specialization and passed them with flying colors. As a young teacher, she needs permanency and security in the job. She chose the NYC Department of Education to hone her teaching skills. P.S. 48 in the Bronx gave her the first break to become a strong and influential teacher to students and teachers.

KARLENE GRACE PARRENO-BINUYA has consistently shown the best in her profession as teacher and as a learner. She never stops learning innovative teaching methods to share these with her students. She always seeks ways to improve herself by taking up another master’s degree in TESOL at City College of New York and later obtained a professional license for TESOL. She also became part of Bilingual/ESL Teacher Leadership Academy (BETLA) scholars at Bank Street College for two years to deepen her understanding about language learners. Recently, she passed the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards for English as a New Language. With this certification, she was granted a license to teach in all states.

Presently, she works for the Department of Education in the Division of Early Childhood Education as an instructional coordinator. In this endeavor, she supports Pre-K for All programs in districts 8 and 12 by conducting professional learning based onsite needs and program assessment outcomes in CLASS and ECERS-R. She also collaborated with fellow instructional coordinators, social workers as well as early childhood teaching staff and leadership to implement Pre-K quality standards in academic and social emotional development.

BEGONIA JENSEN Outstanding Leadership Award

Maria Begonia Jensen is currently the Coordinator of Professional Development Services at the Literacy Assistance Center (LAC), is a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening and expanding the adult education system, and to advancing adult literacy as a core value in our society and a foundation for equal opportunity and social justice.

Fondly known by friends and colleagues as “Be”, she is responsible for the oversight of LAC contracts and the development and implementation of professional development on a wide range of leadership, instructional, programmatic, and socio-emotional topics. As the LAC’s Assessment Specialist, Be also provides training and coaching on standardized test administration. Be is certified by the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) as a BEST Plus Trainer and by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) as a trained trainer on the Test of Adult Basic Education.

Be joined the Literacy Assistance Center (LAC) in 2007 with 13 years of experience as an ESOL instructor and 10 years of experience as a program director of a community-based adult education program. Both experiences, along with her training as an NYU-Certified Executive and Organizational Coach, have aptly qualified Be for her current role. She completed her Bachelors’ Degree Major in Psychology from De La Salle University in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental, Philippines and she pursued her Masters’ Degree in Urban Education, specializing in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) at the New Jersey City University. Throughout all her professional career as an educator, she has significantly impacted so many lives, including the Indo-Chinese refugees at the Philippine Refugee Camp, the adult immigrant students who attended her classes, and the adult literacy practitioners representative of the NYC Department of Education, the library system, the City University of New York, and the various non- for-profit community based organization all over New York City.

As an educator who touches so many lives, “Be” is truly a living testimony of her favorite quote

by Mahatma Ghandi: “ BE the change you want to see in this world”.
