ornwall Advanced Motorists or CAM is a RoSPA Advanced Drivers group, delivering free high quality training in advanced driving. CAM’s volunteer tutors work with drivers of all ages to help them prepare for the RoSPA Advanced Driving Test.

Courses with CAM entitle you to a number of sessions in your own car accompanied by your tutor. There is a small charge to cover admin and training materials and a separate test fee payable to RoSPA.

Commenting on this achievement CAM’s Chairman, Jack Purchase, said: “For any of our trainees (called Associates) to pass RoSPA’s test is an achievement in itself but on a first attempt to achieve a gold test pass award at 78 years of age is most unusual. We are really proud of John”.

hristmas has finished and we have now settled into a new year, so now is the time to get back into the garden and start preparing for the rest of 2016.

that we are still in the winter, hard frosts and snow could be just around the corner, so be ready with something like horticultural fleece to cover over this early growth.

Something else which is always a good idea early in the month, is to get all your machinery serviced.

Your mower can be checked over before the grass really starts to grow and machinery maintenance people get busy, remember if the weather is mild and with the longer days your grass will probably need a couple of cuts this month.

I mentioned earlier about getting your secateurs sharpened, February is the time when the shrubs start to produce their first signs of growth so pruning now will help shape them and encourage them to grow in the correct place. Pruning is a very big subject to cover and there are always new ideas on when and how to prune. Some things if pruned incorrectly will not produce flowers or at least not have a good show. Hydrangeas are a perfect example of this as they flower on the previous year’s growth. Lots of people chop these plants hard, and yes it doesn’t kill them but does affect the flowers. With the plant not producing many flowers they use the energy saved to produce growth, thus making them big leggy plants that need a hard prune next year, you then have a vicious circle.

Because the winter has been so mild so far, lots of herbaceous and other plants are starting to show signs of growth. This means we must be quick with our spring clean, get rid of all dead material from last years growth so that the new growth is not growing through it. Doing it now makes it a lot easier to clean up, you can chop the old growth without knocking or damaging the new. Don’t forget

Hydrangeas don’t necessarily need pruning, but if you need to control them the best way is to prune a third of the oldest growth back hard, this leaves plenty of the older growth to flower for you in late summer. I also prune the coloured stem Dog Woods this way. This I find is the best way to keep the colourful stems longer, giving the plant more height.

This month can be, believe it or not a really busy time in the garden. It is the time of year to do lots of preparation work. The green house that hasn’t been touched over the winter needs a good clean out to get ready for possible seed sowing and those secateurs will need a sharpen as there is quite a few things you can prune this month into March.

Dog Woods (Cornus alba var.) we are told to cut back to the ground every year to two years. This always seems a shame to me as the colour can be appreciated this month and if you chop them to the ground you can’t see it. I am within the minority of gardeners with this train of thought so you will have to decide on this for yourself.

Bulbs should be giving you a nice display in the garden now, enjoy them, they really give a nice show of colour for us at Boscawen Park.

I’ve put quite a few tulips and hyacinths into the mixed borders as well as the formal bedding displays.

There is a lot of daffodils around the park, but for the beds I tend to use tulips and hyacinths as when they have finished flowering the green growth does not last as long, daffodils leaves can still be there in June and they can look scruffy. Bulbs need the leaves leaving as long as possible, as when the flowers are gone the leaves then make energy which will be stored in the bulb for next years flowers. So if you have bulbs coming up and not flowering chopping the growth back too early could

be the reason. The wet winter has caused some areas of daffs to struggle, this is the first time I’ve noticed this, but it has been wet.

If you need to move any shrubs or herbaceous perennials it can still be done this month. However I would get it done sooner rather than later, as the plants will be coming out of their dormancy and will not appreciate the root disturbance. We are doing a lot of this at Boscawen Park and I hope to get the biggest part of this done by March. When moving a well established plant make sure you keep the root ball as big as possible and carefully move it without it coming apart. We are also splitting herbaceous to help fill other areas around Truro.

Don’t forget to get some weeding done, if you keep on top of this job it will be less work for you in the long run. I’ve noticed a lot of dandelions and docks around the cricket square, I will deal with them straight away before they seed.

You might also want to start your seed sowing this month. Visit the garden centre and have a look at what you might fancy growing in your garden this year.

Hopefully we’ll have some mild weather this month so we can get out in the garden, as there is lots to be done.

Marie Curie is appealing for people in Cornwall and on The Isles of Scilly to ‘get behind the daffodil’, by volunteering to collect donations for the charity’s annual Great Daffodil Appeal this March.

Great Daffodil Appeal is our biggest annual fundraising campaign, making it possible for Marie Curie Nurses to give care and support when people need it most. Every year millions of people across the UK show their support for our work by simply giving a donation to wear a daffodil pin. This year is the 30th year of the appeal and we are hoping to raise £8.5million, so we can continue providing this vital care for local people.”

The charity needs volunteers to encourage people in the local community to give a donation and wear a daffodil pin. The money raised from the Great Daffodil Appeal will help Marie Curie Nurses provide care and support to people living with a terminal illness and their loved ones at home. The appeal is now in its 30th year and has raised more than £73million since 1986.

Caz Chivers from Truro said: “I collected for the Great Daffodil Appeal for the first time last year and loved it. So many people approach you to tell you about the support they’ve received from Marie Curie Nurses – it’s amazing to see the difference you’re making. I had a great time and made some new friends in the other collectors. It’s nice to know you’re helping other people.”

From Bude to Torpoint to Land’s End, people across the country are signing up to volunteer. It’s easy to sign up, whether you have taken part before or you’re doing it for the first time – and families, friends and workmates can sign up to volunteer together.

If you ever fancied an obstacle race – but with a little less mud – then Urban Survivor, the South West’s first urban obstacle course race, could be just the challenge for you.

Falmouth is the setting for obstacle race experts Tuff Enuff’s latest challenge taking runners through the streets, parks and coastline of Falmouth, allowing runners to negotiate massive obstacles both man-made and natural along with diverse terrain, promising more than 40 gruelling obstacles including a dash up the 111 steps of Jacob’s Ladder and chance to break a monkey bar world record.

Tuff Enuff: Urban Survivor starts at Draceana Centre where the first obstacle faced is named chaos, followed by the first competing challenge, the steep incline farmer’s walk.

Entrants on the day are able to choose between competing to be crowned Urban Survivor champion 2016 or entering to accept the challenge of completing the course. All entrants will receive a medal and a limited edition tshirt. There will be first, second and third prizes in a men’s and women’s compete section.

Runners then go along the coastline where they face The Moor’s rat trap and the second of the competing challenges, box jumps. That leads to Jacobs ladder, 111 gruelling steep steps in the centre of Falmouth. This takes runners down to the main town centre to face the first dip in the sea.

After negotiating cargo net climbs to get out of the water, runners head to Event Square to tackle a steep quarter-pipe followed by a fear-inducing jump.

Junior competitors are also encouraged to enter a special Tuff Nutt 4km course with 20 obstacles designed to challenge and excite budding junior obstacle course runners.

Tuff Enuff: Urban Survivor takes place on Sunday, February 28, at Falmouth and will seek to raise money for Children’s Hospice South West.

Ships and Castles is the next venue where a rope climb, weavers, monkey bars and walls and crawls will test stamina – both mental and physical. The race then takes runners into Pendennis Castle where the they will face our third challenge, pull ups, burpees and press ups, followed by a series of walls, high and low placed around the 16th century surrounding moat before running to Gyllyngvase Beach. Runners then face one of the most scenic ocean running routes in the world, taking them down to Gyllyngvase Beach, where they will face the rope traverse before encountering the sea followed by a 100 metre slog through the cold surf

Tuff Nutt: Urban Survivor will take place on Saturday, February 27, and all entrants will again receive a limited edition tshirt and medal. The spaces are limited to 1,500 adult competitors and 1,000 youth competitors, with entrants expected to travel from all over the South West.

here’s a right way and a wrong way to do everything. Or is there? Sometimes if you are giving your client what they want, who’s to say that you should follow rules and if there are rules, why shouldn’t they be broken?

I think this applies to most areas of photography. If we all followed all the ‘rules’ rigidly, all our pictures would be too similar.

However, with interior photography for instance, there are some rules and methods which I believe should be observed. For instance most of my interior images are shot using a specialist lens.

BEFORE

This lens has two movements, one to change the focal plane. This is called ‘tilt’ and is sometimes used to simulate a miniature scene or to increase the depth of field across a picture. The movement I use most, is ‘shift’. This allows movement of the lens parallel to the image plane and helps with producing images of buildings and rooms with upright lines.

Taking a picture of a building or room with a wide angle lens would normally result in the upright lines converging.

AFTER

Architects and builders would rather see their creations as they are and not looking like they’re falling over.

The placement of objects that are relevant to a space can transform the look of a room and add a splash of colour.

A good sturdy tripod is a must, in fact I wouldn’t even contemplate shooting an interior job without one. I’m lucky to have bought a very sturdy piece of kit about 20 years ago that is still more than up to the job. Quite often, an interior photograph will be made up of more than one exposure. If there is a big difference in light levels across a scene I will shoot to expose for the different levels and layer the images together in post production.

I think it’s sometimes good to make a room in a holiday cottage looked ‘lived in’ as it feels more welcoming.

nly 16 miles lies between Romsey, Hampshire and Salisbury, Wiltshire, a matter of just 40 minutes or so.

It is a welcoming, clean environment. We place our order and our roast beef dinners arrive swiftly. It is enjoyable and when the chocolate desserts follow there are smiles all round. Harriett (4) and Heidi (2) do enjoy the occasional bambachino (warm milk with a sprinkling of chocolate). “They’re fine to drink,” assures the waiter passing us two scorching cups that would have burnt our daughters’ mouths.

Thank goodness we are vigilant and quickly take the cups and wait for them to cool.

At Romsey Mottisfont, the 13th century priory owned by the National Trust can be found. It became a grand country retreat where writers including James Bond creator Ian Fleming were entertained. Today, it offers a great family day out where young children can roam free in the extensive landscaped gardens and get lost inside the massive country house. It provides a welcome break in our journey to Salisbury where we now head.

My family and I have long enjoyed mooching around Salisbury and savouring its medieval architecture.

Its 123m tall cathedral took 100 years to build from 1220 and is an excellent example of Early English architecture.

When it comes to lunch visitors are spoilt for choice and on the outskirts of the city is The

Nevertheless they do look works of art and are all home baked. Gill’s friendly and knowledgeable approach gives us confidence that we are in safe hands. We all enjoy spaghetti carbonara (made with hard cheese for Caroline) and while away a relaxing couple of hours. But even here the children’s portions are still too generous.

During this brief weekend trip we are only able to touch on some of what Salisbury has to offer and so we will have to revisit.

When re-telling Cinderella on the stage, writers and directors certainly have a challenging task when it has been done so many times.

However, when we see this production at Salisbury Playhouse we are left in doubt that it is one of the best thanks to a witty script and strong performances from excellent actors who have been on television, theatre and radio.

Who would have thought that the fairy godmother could be Jamaican? Or that she would have such a penchant for different accents including a very convincing Scottish one? Another fresh approach is when Prince Charming swaps roles with the Italian Dandini. There is plenty of humour to be had from the ugly sisters who between them deliver some lightning innuendos. Harriett and Heidi are mesmerised throughout the entire performance despite it being at night and way past their bedtime.

The bread is so important – decent seeded wholemeal has to be the healthiest and is often considered to be the tastiest. It does add a lot of processed carbohydrate and calories to the sandwich however. Not a problem if you want your sandwich to be a meal though. Otherwise, use just one slice of bread.

Butter is also tasty, but is high in calories and fat content. Spreading some mayo instead of butter will actually reduce both yet still add flavour. Or how about cream cheese instead of butter? Full fat soft cheese is only about 11% fat, so could be a useful alternative.

What will help you feel fuller for longer in a sandwich? Plenty of lean protein is needed – could be a generous slice of cooked meat or some egg or fish. Combine any of these with cream cheese and you’ll have a protein packed sandwich. Or have some chopped nuts in with cream cheese for a tasty, high protein sandwich.

Can I get some Vitamin C as well? Easy – add tomato and fresh cucumber or some thinly sliced peppers. Dark green leaves like rocket

Paintings by a Cornish artist are now hanging in America.

In the last month Gordon Hunt from Fowey has sent two paintings to California and Texas.

“It is very exciting how the internet allows me to share and sell my work around the world,” says Gordon. “The images I paint of Cornwall, with its sparkling turquoise seas, evoke a feeling of sunshine, holidays and well-being and seem to resonate around the world. I have now sent work to the USA, the Middle East, Australia and Europe."

The following morning, you take a varied and interesting 4x4 drive with lunch on route to the edge of the desert where you start your trek. You will walk on both hard packed and soft moving sand making this trek quite tough underfoot as you trek in to your bedouin camp for the night. Climb a nearby sand dune to watch the sunset before dinner around a camp fire.

rek Sahara is the latest overseas challenge to be offered by Cornish Charity Cornwall Hospice Care, taking place from October 6th - 10th 2016.

The Sahara, the world's most famous desert, stretching for over 4,800km, spanning the West coast of Africa to the East. The challenge is to trek through this vast and barren landscape and conquer some of the biggest dunes in the desert. The days will be hot, the trekking will be tough but the rewards of conquering the desert and discovering a quieter pace of life will be worth it. Join us on this adventure of a life time and help change people's lives.

The next day will be a tough full day of trekking up all of the highest sand dunes in Erg Chegaga stopping for lunch in the heat of the day before continuing to climb on the high sand dunes to finish in the early evening in camp.

Your last day in the desert will be a half day trekking out via a new route to your awaiting 4x4s before the drive to a final nights hotel to celebrate your achievements.

Your Sahara Desert Trek involves 3 days of trekking around and up and down the amazing sand dunes of the Moroccan Sahara in the Erg Chegaga area. You will trek over 50km of desert sand and climb the highest dunes. Each evening, trek to the top of a nearby dune to watch the sand change colour as the sun sets and then camp overnight in a traditional Berber bedouin camp under the beautiful Saharan night sky.

Fly out to the UK, reflecting on what you have done and where you have been and the money you have raised to support a local Cornish Charity.

Rare Crayfish found on Cornish rugged underwater reefs

ornwall Wildlife Trust welcomes the news that the Government is designating a second phase of 23 new Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs), four of which are around the Cornish coast – Mounts Bay, Runnelstone, Newquay and the Gannel, and Hartland Point to Tintagel - with a further three offshore – Western Channel, North West of Jones Bank, and Greater Haig Fras.

“We welcome today’s designation of 23 Marine Conservation Zones. UK seas have the potential to be full of incredible life and colour but it is vital that we protect our marine environment to ensure that our seas and sealife can recover and prosper.

Healthy seas are crucial for all of us, from the oxygen we breathe to the fish we eat so this news is a fantastic step towards better protection and a healthier future for our seas. Without these incredible submerged landscapes there wouldn't be any fish, let alone fantastic jewel anemones, seahorses, dolphins, brittlestars amongst all the other wild and extraordinary creatures which are part of a healthy marine ecosystem.”

This historic move illustrates a renewed impetus to protect our seas and follows on from the announcement of 27 MCZs in 2013. This is the second of three phases promised by the Government in order to fulfil the remit of the Marine and Coastal Access Act.

Marine Conservation Zones are a type of protected area at sea designated for habitats and species of national importance, including fragile seahorses, rare native oysters and even cold water coral reefs. Such protected areas are a tried and tested means of giving vulnerable species the time and space to recover.

The 23 new MCZs are special places in England’s seas and include cold water coral reefs, forests of sea fans, canyons and sandbanks, and an astonishingly varied range of submerged landscapes which support the stunning diversity of marine life found in the UK. They include Land’s End, one of the South-West’s most recognised areas, renowned for its rugged reefs and coastline, and Newquay and the Gannel, home to the rare fish, the giant goby. All sites will contribute towards a network of areas which is urgently needed to ensure a healthy future for our seas.

The list of Marine Conservation Zones was drawnup by sea-users, scientists and conservationists, with Government committing to designating the sites in three waves or tranches. The Wildlife Trusts, actively involved in every step of the process, are buoyed by the achievement of another important milestone on the road to better protected seas. We are calling for anyone interested in protecting our seas to join more than 8,000 other passionate supporters and become a Friend of MCZs.

016 is a significant year for Children's Hospice South West as it marks 25 years since the charity was founded by Eddie Farwell and his late wife Jill.

Now with three hospices in the region in Devon, Cornwall and Somerset, Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) offers help and support to children who are living with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions and is the only organisation in the South West to provide hospice care to not only children, but also their whole family.

Eddie Farwell much needed centre of help and support for the families and children in the region.

With the provision now of three hospices, the charity has achieved its goal of ensuring that no one in the South West needs to travel for more than 1½ hours by car to reach their nearest children’s hospice and from its start in a spare room at the Farwell’s home in North Devon, CHSW has gone on to care for over 2000 children across the region.

Since its creation in 1991, CHSW’s mission statement has remained the same, simply to make the most of short and precious lives. 2016 is therefore an extremely important year for the charity and Eddie Farwell, now CEO of the charity, said: ‘My hope is that in another 25 years that Children’s Hospice South West will have expanded its services and will be able to support even more children with life-limiting illnesses and that there is still an army of supporters who can help us to sustain what we do.’

CHSW now offers a wealth of services – all of which are free to the families – including medical care 365 days a year, emergency care, end of life care, respite breaks, sibling care, bereavement support and holistic care including music therapy.

In its 25th year, the charity is already looking to the future and the hope that it can continue to help many hundreds of families across the South West for many more years to come.

Eddie and Jill’s idea to create a children’s hospice came from their own experiences of caring for their own life-limited children, Katie and Tom. In 1983, both children were diagnosed as suffering with a rare degenerative disorder which meant they would die somewhere between the ages of 10-20.

This in turn promotes demand for sustainably-caught Cornish fish, and helps make the future that bit more secure for both fish stocks and our inshore fishermen. Gaining the support of so many local businesses shows that these companies really do care about the seafood they sell. We are delighted that Outlaw’s have pledged their support to this project, and it’s fantastic to be working with people with such a passion for sourcing the most sustainable seafood they can.

The Cornwall Good Seafood Guide has been produced by Cornwall Wildlife Trust in partnership with the Cornish fishing industry. The guide also features tasty seafood recipes, a directory of where to purchase great local seafood, and a series of ‘meet the fishermen’ videos.
