One of the fun parts that comes with the changing of seasons is switching up what you wear. My favorite time of year is fall and all the clothes that come with it - layers, textures, cozy knits, etc. However, living in southern California doesn’t exactly lend itself to all those cozy pieces, at least not right away. So, how can we dress for the Fall season without ending up a hot sweaty mess?

DRESS FOR FALL IN A WARM CLIMATE 1. SUEDE: This ultimate fall texture is so rich and will give any outfit a fall twist. Even a touch of suede in a bag or boots paired back to lighter fabrics takes your outfit to a new place. You can incorporate suede in so many ways whether it be pants, a skirt, top or jacket. The best part is there are stylish options available in both real and faux suede so you’ll be sure to find something no matter your budget or lifestyle.

2. SLEEVELESS/SHORT-SLEEVED

SWEATERS: Probably the one piece of

clothing that screams fall is a comfy sweater. The coziness of a good sweater can still be translated to warmer weather; all you have to do is drop the sleeves. A knit tank/vest or short sleeve sweater gives you the look of Fall warmth without the heat. Not too keen on showing your arms? Wear it under

a jacket/blazer or over a t-shirt or blouse. If you can’t do sleeveless, then here’s a tip for warm weather sweater shopping: don’t buy wool, it’s hot and itchy, instead go for merino wool. Merino wool is lighter, not itchy and a much cooler option.

3. LIGHTWEIGHT JACKETS: One piece that I’m always recommending to my clients is a nice lightweight jacket. It’s a great way to add depth and dimension to your outfit without packing in the heat. Crepe, nylon, cotton, and rayon are proven fabrics for a light jacket. If you want to be on trend this Fall/Winter season get yourself a cotton trench coat (don’t worry about the lack of rain, it’s more about the look than the functionality — wink, wink).

4. BRING OUT THE BOOTS: It can’t be fall without some sort of boot action. It may seem counterintuitive to wear boots on a hot day but I’ve been sporting my knee

high suede boots on some of the hottest days this fall and loving it. The look of a light breezy dress worn with boots is one of my favorites. As long as you style the boots back to lighter fabrics to balance out the weight of your outfit (for heat purposes) you’ll look season appropriate yet still feel functional.

5. COLOR PALETTE: The easiest way to represent the new season is through color. Rust, mustard, burgundy, olive green and browns are all notorious fall colors. Instead of your blue jeans opt for olive green utility pants. Rather than a light summery floral print go for a darker print in fall colors. Or it can be as easy as a fall color t-shirt instead of your usual black. The possibilities are really endless. carrieharkin.com IG - @carrieharkinstyle
