(July 9, 2021) SAN DIEGO – Starry Starry Night, one of San Diego’s most anticipated fundraising events, will take place on September 25, 2021. After a virtual event last year, Voices for Children looks forward to bringing back its annual gala in person in a momentous way: at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, San Diego’s spectacular new bayside performance venue.

“Starry Starry Night is truly an inspirational evening during which our community comes together to express their support for children in foster care,” said Kelly Capen Douglas, Esq., president & CEO of Voices for Children. “Over the past four decades, thousands of compassionate and generous volunteers and supporters have championed our special mission.

We look forward to this year’s Starry Starry Night on September 25, where we will celebrate 40 years of service in San Diego County while raising crucial funds to provide advocacy to our region’s most vulnerable children.”

Founded in 1980, Voices for Children transforms the lives of children in foster care by providing them with Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs). These volunteers – trained and supported by Voices for Children – advocate for youth in court, school, medical settings, and more to ensure their needs are met. Over time, a CASA often becomes the most consistent adult in the life of a child in foster care.

Peter was fully onboard with the collaboration, so they kicked off the process with an informal AleSmith beer tasting, after which Tony immediately knew he wanted his beer to be “light with a

The Gwynn family was enlisted to provide feedback on each test batch, and the resounding winner was a golden pale ale full of American hop flavor and aroma, balanced with subdued bitterness and a malty sweet finish. Named in honor of Tony’s record-setting, single-season batting average, San Diego Pale Ale .394 has since won the hearts of craft beer fans near and far.

After a four-year battle with cancer, Tony passed away before he was able to see the release of his dream beer into San Diego’s craft beer community, and the collaboration marked one of his final projects prior to his passing.

The AleSmith team mourned with Tony’s family over the loss of the city’s beloved baseball legend, and out of respect, awaited their decision regarding his signature beer’s impending release in 2014.

“Shortly after Tony passed, I asked Alicia about going forward with the beer - or not,” recalls Peter. “She emphatically replied, ‘We need to keep Tony’s dream alive.

He wanted this beer everywhere and anywhere for baseball and craft beer fans to enjoy.’ I promised her that we would put our heart and soul into every drop of .394 brewed, and it’s been wonderful to watch how well it has been received!”

The AleSmith team is grateful to have worked with Tony and his family as closely as they did, and the iconic beer he ideated lives on in support of the Gwynn’s nonprofit, a 501c3 organization

dedicated to providing support for underprivileged San Diego youth.

The goals of the Eastlake Alumni and Friends include engaging alumni and supporters in the continuing success of EHS by celebrating Titan traditions, history and culture. By Sam Russell Two words: Beach Life It’s the reason we came, and it’s the reason we stay—California and all its diverse beaches, each holding its own unique personality and sentiment. If you’ve ever been to a wedding in Laguna Beach, held hands with someone you love along the boardwalk in Pacific Beach, or dodged bear traps and homeless encampments in Venice Beach, then you know what I speak of.

Each neighborhood has left a memory on your heart.

If you work for a living, road trips are easier to squeeze in than flight plans with the family. So, pop in a couple of your favorite albums on the sound system, bring all the loved ones your two-seater can accommodate and explore.

Oxnard, California, in my mind, is gondola rides under bridges and canals and watching people zip by on fun wheel rentals alongside the beach paths. The sooner you can get off that freeway, the sooner your recovery stage of living your best life begins.

This relationship is fate.

he unveiling of a new plaque commemorating the honorees of the prestigious Patrons of the Prado ICON Award for Arts and Culture will be celebrated on Saturday, July 17, 2021, 4:30 – 6:30 pm. The Patrons of the Prado are proud to salute the 2020 honorees, Jack McGrory and Una Davis as well as the 2019 Inaugural Recipients, Harvey and Sheryl White at this ceremony Arlene Esgate, Nancie Geller, Roxana Velasquez and Micki Olin in the May S. Marcy Sculpture Garden of The San Diego Museum of Art, Balboa Park. The Balboa Park Committee approved installation of the plaque in the park in early 2020, but celebrating the unveiling was postponed due to the pandemic.

The Patrons’ ICON Award recognizes the contributions of individuals who are dedicated to enriching and advancing the vitality of the arts, science and culture of Balboa Park and the San Diego community. The Whites were the first recipients Nancie Geller, Merridee Book & Roxi Link Harvey & Sheryl White & Una Davis and Jack McGrory of the award, honored for their legacy of enduring influence and support of the arts in Balboa Park.

Jack McGrory and Una Davis are long time supporters of many cultural institutions in Balboa Park. “Balboa Park is the most important cultural center in San Diego,” said McGrory. “It is a worldwide attraction and the heart and soul of the city.” Jack, a former San Diego City Manager, was instrumental in restoring the Caroline Wohl, Merridee & Jon Book, Michaela Lynott, John Vance physical landscape of the park. & Christy Billings, Roxi & Fred Link, Marilyn & Frank Tobin Nayda Locke, Julie Sarno & Dee Ammon Balboa Park’s buildings were temporary structures built in 1915 for the Panama-California Exposition and were badly deteriorating in the 1980’s. He spearheaded the restoration of these iconic buildings between 1990-1995 during his tenure at the city. Jack and Una were Honorary Chairs of Patron’s 2015 Masterpiece Gala to celebrate the historic milestone of the 100-year anniversary of Balboa Park, and Jack was instrumental in helping Patrons raise a record amount to support the Patron’s beneficiaries.

Founded in 1997, Patrons of the Prado have been committed to raising funds to benefit the museums, theatres and science centers on the Prado. What’s In A Name?

Bright West

Formerly known as Malachi Henry and the Lights, with a lineup change, this soulful rock trio is now known as Bright West. Featuring Ben Hernandez (lead vocals, songwriter), Kevin Spencer (guitars, vocals) and Scot Smart (guitars, bass, vocals), they released their debut EP, Breakers, earlier this month with new music already in the works.

“The name change was a long time coming,” said Hernandez. “At the time, I needed a name for the band immediately, and although it still carries a lot of meaning (that’s a story for another time), it was just too long: Malachi Henry and the Lights. It was difficult for people to say, spell, or remember.”

The latter was a particular sticking point. “I would watch the enthusiasm drain out of people’s faces when I would tell them our band name,” he continued. “I knew instantly that

there was no way that they would remember it! I was on the hunt for something simpler; one or two words.

Easy to remember. We eventually landed on Bright West.”

As for the lineup change, “it came mostly out of necessity, Hernandez said. “Scot and I each had another child in the thick of the pandemic and I also went back to school.”

Meanwhile, as with everyone, the pandemic caused disruption. “A couple of us also didn’t feel comfortable being indoors together rehearsing because of the virus and vulnerable family members. Then we watched venue after venue shut down. I just sort of let everything go during that time. I felt so overwhelmed with things at home that I just kind of fell off the face of the earth and didn’t keep very consistent contact with the band.” Eventually, it was decided to disband Malachi Henry and the Lights as it was, with five members, and concentrate more on the 3 founding members - Hernandez, Spencer and Smart. “Our drummer, Cheyne Dolly and bass player Aaron Hook, were still finding gigs and working because they’re amazing musicians, but we weren’t. So there wasn’t much point to keeping them on, for a band that didn’t really exist.

With all of that, it was just a perfect time to start over. New name, new

music, new direction. Why not?”

In addition to Hernandez work with Bright West, he also has sung with with legendary singer Mavis Staples.

“I toured as a backup singer with Mavis for about six weeks during the summer of 2019, then again recently for their first show back after the shut-down in June at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival,” he recalled. “These were some of the most amazing experiences of my life that I’ll cherish forever. Mavis is one of my musical idols, so it blows my mind when I can look over on stage and realize that I’m up there with one of the greatest! But it’s equally as earth-shaking when I’ve had quiet moments, off-stage with her, talking about new music she’s into, what her daily life is like, or hearing first hand stories about times with Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin or Martin Luther King, Jr.” Hernandez is looking forward to more touring and touring, the new streamlined band, Bright West has him re-energized and ready to make music. “Now we get to work at our own pace,” he said. “We can record from our own homes. We will eventually live stream some stuff. Put out some videos. Record more stuff. We’re not in a hurry and that feels very refreshing.” www.brightwest.bandcamp.com

San Diego’s music community comes together on August 24 for the San Diego Music Awards, taking place at Humphrey’s Concert’s by the Bay. Trophies will be handed out on the night in nineteen categories with money raised at the showcase concerts going to the San Diego Music Foundations Music In Schools programs. The night will feature performances from The Frets, Ed Kornhauser, Brisa Lauren, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Marujah, Electric Mud and Chickenbone Slim, with a special pair of songs from this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, guitarist Jerry Raney.

“I always look forward to seeing musicians and friends that I don’t see every day,” he said. He notes the real action is at the venue’s back bar. “Everyone is busy with their own thing most of the time and don’t always make it to each other’s shows. I think that’s why it ends up being so loud, most people are partying and talking, and that’s cool with me. I know it irritates some people, but we’re a bunch of musicians, what do they expect? It’s all good in my

opinion, if your friend is next to you and doesn’t hear that he won, tap him on the shoulder and send him up. I needed that in 2018. Ha!” Bringing his career full circle, Raney will be joined by his son Nathan for the band’s two songs. “I’m not sure what they will be yet.

Riverside will probably be one of them though.” Raney is proud to have his son join him onstage anytime, but in particular for this performance. “Not only is Nathan talented as can be, he has a wonderful exuberance about being able to be on stage and do what he does,” Raney said. “He has a blast, and it shows. He belongs up there.”

Reflecting back on a lifetime in music, does it feel like time has passed or has rock ‘n’ roll kept him young? “I do feel that playing rock n roll keeps me young,” Raney said. “I’m still a teenager in my mind.” www.thefarmersmusic. com

More than five decades since their split, The Beatles remain one of the world’s most popular bands. On November 25-27 there will be a new three part documentary airing on Disney+; The Beatles: Get Back, directed / produced by Peter Jackson, reportedly complete with accompanying box set of unreleased “Let It Be” era tracks.

STUDY: CANNABIS PATIENTS SEE IMPROVEMENT IN PAIN MANAGEMENT, PTSD, AND SLEEP A new study involving patients, mostly over 50 years old, shows improvements in the symptoms caused by chronic pain, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and sleep disorders after starting therapy with medical cannabis.

The study bolsters previous research that has shown cannabis has a positive impact, especially managing pain and improving sleep. It also provides scientific evidence why more seniors than ever are turning to medical marijuana to treat various ailments.

The study, conducted by Canadian and Italian researchers and published in the journal Frontiers in Public Health, found that more than 60 percent of patients reported improvements in their medical conditions after using cannabis. A link to the study below: Evaluation of Patient Reported Safety and Efficacy of Cannabis From a Survey of Medical Cannabis Patients in Canada (nih.gov) «This real-world data shows that a large proportion of medical cannabis patients report moderate to substantial benefits from cannabis, both in terms of their overall condition and general wellbeing,» the researchers wrote.

The study involved 214 patients in Canada who self-completed web-based surveys between January 2020 and August 2020. After an initial survey that recorded their medical information, each patient began a six-week trial period of cannabis treatment. In follow-up visits, they reported any changes and what, if any, cannabis products they felt caused those changes.

Patients ranged in age from 1779, but most of the patients were more than 50 years old.

After six weeks, 76 percent of those who suffer from chronic pain reported improvement. Cannabis and CBD proved especially successful in treating two of the most common types of pain, nociceptive

and neuropathic.

Patients also were evenly split about what type of treatment worked best. Among those who saw pain relief, 33 percent rated high CBD products as the most helpful, while 31 percent said the same of high THC products.

Those who suffer from PTSD, anxiety, and poor sleep at night also reported substantial improvements. The following lists four areas where people reported issues and the percentage who said they experienced improvements after six weeks of medical cannabis therapy.

• Sleep disorder (92.6 percent) • Anxiety (84.8 percent) • PTSD (81.3 percent) • Arthritis (61.5 percent) Patients also reported improvement in general wellbeing, with 89.8 percent reporting some level of improvement.

Among those who experienced improvement, 42.1 percent reported feeling “better” or “a great deal better.”

«This real-world data shows that a large proportion of medical cannabis patients report moderate to substantial benefits from cannabis, both in terms of their overall condition and general wellbeing,» the researchers wrote.

Furthermore, researchers commented the study provides “the scientific evidence healthcare practitioners routinely state they require” and can also help lawmakers in “the drafting of future regulatory guidelines surrounding medical cannabis use.”

Analysis As legalization of cannabis continues to expand across the planet, more research continues to come to light to validate anecdotal benefits of cannabis through objective research studies and objective patient data. Objective studies and data on medical cannabis are slowly

decreasing the stigma associated with the use and legality of cannabis.

With the average senior taking 13 prescription drugs per day in the USA, the amount of emergency room admissions related to not taking prescriptions properly (too many or too little)

THE NEW CHILDREN’S MUSEUM TO OPEN NORTH COUNTY SATELLITE “Art + Play Space” Opens in Del Mar Plaza in August

The New Children’s Museum has announced the launch of its first stand-alone satellite location in San Diego County.

The 2,000-square-foot Art + Play Space will be a smaller version of the Museum’s 50,000-squarefoot downtown location, featuring a commissioned art installation, a hands-on makerspace and museum store. Located on the upper level of the Del Mar Plaza shopping center along the coast in North County, the new space is slated to open August 20.

“This is one of the most exciting and ambitious projects The New Children’s Museum has embarked upon,” said Caroline Perry, Chair of the Museum’s Board of Directors. “Opening a satellite location will enable the Museum to amplify its efforts to bring art, creativity and play to more children and families throughout San Diego County.”

Despite the reduced footprint, the North County satellite location will continue the Museum’s focus on contemporary art, which is what sets it apart from other children’s museums. The Art + Play Space will feature a smaller version of the popular installation Wobbleland by San Diego artist Marisol Rendón. A giant kitchen sink with soft larger-than-life fruit and vegetable sculptures, the commissioned installation introduces young children to art in an immersive and playful manner.

“As supporters of the arts and arts-based organizations, we’re thrilled to welcome The New Children’s Museum,” said Marc and Patty Brutten, Del Mar Plaza owners and longtime supporters of the downtown museum. “Their Art and Play Space will offer a creative experience that will appeal to local residents as well as children and families from all over North County.”

The Art + Play Space will also provide children the opportunity to create their own art, with

“drop in” hands-on art making as well as fee-based classes and workshops (starting later this Fall). The Museum also plans to host artist talks, birthday parties, camps and other events in the space.

This is not the Museum’s first foray into having a presence in a shopping mall or retail destination. The Museum originally opened in a La Jolla shopping mall in 1983 and has had partnerships with malls throughout the County for several years. Of note are its two-year sponsorship of the family lounge at Westfield UTC (2013-2014) and multiple pop-up activations at One Paseo Del Mar and Westfield Plaza Bonita. For the past two years, the Museum has occupied a storefront in Seaport Village, an artist studio called Studio by the Bay, with working artists, popup programming and hands-on art instruction.

“We’ve been expanding into the community for many years through outreach, partnerships and activations,” said Kerri Fox,

Deputy Director of Marketing and Earned Revenue. “Adding a second location significantly expands our reach and helps us make art and creativity accessible to more people. We’re excited to be able to offer families two options to visit us and look forward to introducing the Museum to new audiences.”

The Art + Play Space at Del Mar Plaza will be open from Thursday to Monday (consistent with the Museum’s downtown location) with open hours from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m., mirroring the other shops in the Plaza. It will also feature a smaller version of the downtown Museum store, offering creative, educational and arts-based products. Admission is $10 to enter and play in the space, with free admission for Museum members.

If you’ve had the same revolving issue with your partner more than a few times, it’s a pretty clear indication that you’re unconsciously perpetuating the pattern - and that “projection” is likely the culprit.

Remember, relationships are a dynamic. Often, both partners are bringing complimentary emotional wounds to the table that cause them to repeat a negative pattern and project past pain onto their partners. Essentially, the unspoken intention is that “if the other person shifts their behavior, I’ll just be just fine.”

Because these dynamics are usually unconscious, they remain locked in a battle and can’t see their way out... unless they’re able to uncover those underlying triggers.

If you’re hurting in your relationship, and you’re convinced your partner is to blame, this could be the most important article you ever read.

First, I have some questions for you: • Do you have a hard time moving on after you’ve had a fight with your mate?

• Are you able to kiss and make up, or do you experience the need to keep your distance for a while?

• If your partner tries to get close again, do you remain a bit detached and even withdraw your affection?

• Is there a part of you that thinks you shouldn’t give in so easily after you’ve been upset - maybe even that you should make your partner work hard to get your full attention again?

If you answered yes to any or all of these, then you likely believe that you just can’t let go of the hurt.

You may think that you can’t get over what your partner has said or done, or what they didn’t do. You don’t experience being loved, and it hurts. You’re certainly not ready to forgive.

I’d like you to consider some-

thing quite radical - something you might at first want to completely write off. In fact, you might feel angry and want to shred this article. And, that’s exactly why you should keep reading.

The Surprising Reason You’re Upset I’ve got some have news for you: your partner likely has nothing to do with your feelings or hurt.

When you’re this hurt and convinced your partner is the cause of your pain, you’re almost certainly projecting. And when you project, you wholeheartedly believe your problem is one thing, but it actually comes from something else.

Projection happens when we blame our partners for old hurts. We don’t do it consciously.

Conflict with anybody triggers unresolved issues from our past including childhood wounds and disappointments from previous relationships.

It appears as if the other person is the cause of our upset, because, after all, he or she is right there with us and so they must be the problem. What else could it be?!

However, projection keeps us from understanding the true source of our pain. When you’re convinced your partner is to blame, you’re unable to see how your past has contributed to what you feel in the present moment.

You cast a blind eye to the fundamental issues that are triggering you now.

More importantly, projection prevents us from resolving those underlying issues, thus recycling the same negative patterns again and again. Unless you recognize and address the projection, you will keep repeating the same patterns in this relationship or from partner to partner - preventing you from truly moving on from disputes and authentically connecting with those you love.

3 Ways To Know You’re Projecting First, let’s look at how projection

shows up and how it feels in your body: 1. Righteousness - When you’re projecting, you’re 100% convinced you’re 100% right about the situation at hand - and you’re certain your partner is at fault. You’ll feel angry, your brow will furrow, and you might even assume an intimidating posture over your mate.

2. Being Wronged - If a minor argument with your partner leaves you feeling deeply hurt, and you experience a feeling of sadness in your chest, then you’re likely projecting something from your past onto them. Maybe it was a parent who let you down, or it could be a situation from your school days when you felt as if another kid got away with something he did to you.

3. Need to Resolve Most Issues Immediately - Have you ever had an overwhelming sense of anxiety or panic during an argument with your spouse? Extreme circumstances aside, in a healthy relationship there should enough emotional and physical safety that most issues can be discussed, pondered, and returned to at a later time. The need to resolve something right here, right now is a signal that you’re likely bringing a past traumatic event into the present moment.

Note: Projection is not an excuse for abuse in a relationship. If you find yourself in a situation that compromises your well-being, you are urged to seek appropriate professional help.

Why Projection Keeps You Stuck & Depletes Love Interactions between partners are rarely one sided.

Blaming your partner keeps you from discovering your part in the dynamic, and it results in what I call an “entanglement.”

Entanglements may look like relationships on the surface: you may spend a lot of time together, maybe you even live together.

Dr. Silva announces the scholarship winner of the 2021 Titan MD Scholarship who writes about the importance of mental health Why did you decide to offer this scholarship to the graduation seniors from Eastlake High School, class of 2021?

It was important to me to highlight the positive things that came out of COVID. The pandemic was a challenging time for many, especially teens who did not have their normal social outlets. The scholarship was an opportunity for me to magnify the challenging time by asking those applying to discuss what they learned about themselves or share an inspiring story or event during COVID. I knew from all the despair that there were those who not only coped or adapted but also thrived, and I was hoping those stories would be shared.

What can parents do to help a teen if they suspect that depression is a problem?

Parents should let their teen know that they are a source of support without being judgmental or critical. Teens may be inhibited to express to their parents how they are feeling so it is ok if you ask an adult friend or family member who the teen trusts to step in and help. The most important thing for the teen is to be safe. Professional help from a doctor and/or therapist should be encouraged.

There are other therapies such equine therapy, exercise, yoga, meditation, music and art.

Why are we so hesitant in

our society to talk openly about this illness?

Unfortunately, there is a common stigma with mental illness and people may feel shame about having depression.

People may not want to disclose mental illness because of the fear of being judged or discriminated. Some people feel that those who suffer from mental illness may be violent or unstable which may cause direct or subtle discrimination. People with mental illness may try to avoid such situations and isolate themselves which makes the depression worse and harder to get treatment. We all can help the situation by seeking to understand mental illness and helping others in our community to understand. If you know someone who may suffer from mental illness, please check in with them and remind them they are not alone. It is more common than you think and it will make a world of difference for that person to know there is help with support groups, church, school, family, doctor and therapists.

The mental illness does not define the person and encourage people to get the help they need before it’s too late.

When I was told that we would be receiving an extra week of spring break due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, I (I’m sure as many other students) was quite ecstatic to be getting away from the school environment. Unaware of the consequences the pandemic held at the time, I assumed this “break” would be an opportu-

However, as the break kept extending, and my social life declined, I realized how essential school life was to my mental health and well-being.

In the earlier weeks, I enjoyed putting in minimum work and effort into my classes by sitting through periods with my camera off and turning in my work at the latest minute possible.

Sometimes, I would go outside and see friends at a distance, but my parents became more strict and I found myself laying in my bed all day.

My grandma had worried about my mental health since I was young, and concerned my mom with the idea that I had clinical depression. I reckon deep down inside, I had always felt that way, but school life and sports was a distraction enough to keep my head above the water. Unfortunately though, during the pandemic I had

problems with friends as well as failing grades which caused me to fall into an even deeper depression. I wouldn’t eat or get out of my bed and I spent most of the day sleeping.

Although this sounds depressing, I see it as a blessing in disguise as it forced me to finally reach out for help. Both medication and therapy guided me to a healthier place and allowed me to be in control of my own life. Being stable again allowed me to surround myself with people who made me feel loved and wanted as well as become a more spiritual individual. As for friends, I found people who made me feel comfortable and safe, who shared my same struggles, but also ways to deal with problems of self-doubt and find ways to put my feelings first in a way still respectful towards others. When it came to therapy and spirituality, I found ways to cope with feelings of insecurity and self-distrust and ultimately regain control over peace in both my mind and heart.

I probably always will be insecure about my appearance, but through educating myself on the ideas of spirituality, perspective, and self-love, I’ve realized that during my time on this earth, my focus should not be on the appearance of my external body, but on my internal beauty, as my morals, ethics, attitude and intelligence are what I can use for positive change in this world.
