Director’s Message
By the time this issue of Explore reaches our community, I will have retired as Library Director. During my seven-year tenure, I was fortunate to have been part of many wonderful changes and updates within Prince William Public Libraries. My first official duty was reopening Dumfries Library in February 2017 when we relocated to the Triangle Shopping Center. Since then, we opened a new branch in the City of Manassas, completed two major renovations at Bull Run and Central Libraries, opened two new Makerspaces, and provided some much-needed enhancements at Dale City, Independent Hill, Lake Ridge, and Nokesville Libraries.
We have enhanced our technology services through Wi-Fi mobile hotspot and Chromebook lending, and we have strengthened our 24/7 access through extensive Wi-Fi reach and expanded digital resources. Prince William Public Libraries went fine-
free in 2021, which has removed barriers to access for those in our community who needed that support while not adversely impacting access for all.
Our Outreach Services have grown from a small, passionate team to a formal, dedicated division–Community Outreach Services–who recently acquired the first mobile library PWPL has owned since the 1950s.
We endured a pandemic and emerged on the other side, more determined than ever to meet the community’s demand for library services, and you, our community, have responded with equal enthusiasm! My hope for the Prince William community is that your libraries continue to be a welcoming and inclusive destination for all and that the partnership between the staff and community continues to make PWPL the great library system it has been for more than 70 years!
New App Gives You Access to the Library Anytime from Anywhere
Prince William Public Libraries is launching a new mobile app to make it even easier to find your next read, see upcoming events and programs, and reserve a group study room. Download the app for free by searching “Prince William Public Library” on the App Store and Google Play. Once downloaded, the app offers user-friendly navigation on the following features: Explore the Online Catalog: Search the catalog, check availability, and reserve titles in real-time.
Digital Library Features: If you’re looking for more library resources, our Digital Library offers more titles on the Libby, by OverDrive and hoopla apps, and links to our complete Digital Library on our website.
Plan Your Events Schedule: Browse upcoming events by Age Group, Event Type, and Date Range. For events requiring registration, you can easily register on the app; even better, it will automatically populate your contact information. Less typing!
Reserve a Room: Say you’re out and about and need a quiet space to study. Now you can book a group study room on the go. As long as there’s space available at your library, you can be in a study room in minutes.
Recommended Reads: Our staff selects special collections for Adults, Children, and Teens that are easy to browse and place a hold right from the app–no clicking away to get to the Online Catalog.
There’s even more to explore, customize, and learn about on the new Prince William Public Libraries app.
Celebrating Volunteer Appreciation Month at Prince William Public Libraries
As April unfolds, we are embarking on a monthlong journey dedicated to celebrating the heart and soul of our libraries–our incredible volunteers.
Scannable Library Card: Uh oh – you forgot your library card at home and are ready to check out? No problem! Pull up the app and click “My Card” for a scannable library card. For iPhone users: Add your library card to Apple Wallet with just one click.
Volunteer Appreciation Month is not just a time to recognize the hours of dedication and passion our volunteers contribute but a moment to express our deepest gratitude for their invaluable impact on our community. This month, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to every volunteer across our branches. To each of our volunteers, thank you for donating your time to make our libraries welcoming, inclusive environments for area residents.
Are you interested in making a difference? Learn more about volunteer opportunities with Prince William Public Libraries on PWPL’s Volunteer page at pwcva.gov/library.

Experience the Solar Eclipse at the Library
On Monday, April 8, 2024, the sun, moon, and Earth will align to produce a total solar eclipse. It will be the last total solar eclipse visible from the contiguous United States until 2044. Although Virginia will not be along the narrow path of totality, and we will be able to observe only a partial eclipse, PWPL is celebrating this natural phenomenon – with a bit of help from NASA!
PWPL was one of 30 libraries nationwide to receive NASA@ My Library Bilingual Solar Science Kits. The kits include a Dobsonian Telescope with solar filter, SunSpotters, "Eclipse Soundscapes" Citizen Science Tools and Activities, books about the eclipse, and astronomy and solar science activities and games. Enjoy the solar eclipse with us and learn more about NASA's scientific explorations of Earth, our solar system, and the universe beyond. All programs and activities will be bilingual (English and Spanish).
Stay updated on our solar eclipse programs in March and April by visiting our Online Calendar at pwcva.gov/library. Don't miss out on this celestial celebration!
Read more about the eclipse at science.nasa.gov/eclipses/future-eclipses/eclipse-2024. NASA@ My Library is based upon work funded by NASA under cooperative agreement No. NNX16AE30A. Through the NASA@ My Library project, NASA, public libraries, and state library agencies work together to increase and enhance STEM learning opportunities for millions of library patrons throughout the nation, including geographic areas and populations that are currently underserved in STEM education.

Story Times are more than just books! They’re interactive experiences that engage children with short stories, action rhymes, songs, and fingerplays. Our story times focus on pre-reading skills that all children need to become good readers, and they help parents practice these skills at home. Each story time differs depending on the age group, but all of them help parents foster a love of books and learning in their children.
