Acting Director’s Message
Rebecca Lowe, Acting Director
One of the many things I take pride in with Prince William Public Libraries is our diverse programming and collaboration with other Prince William County agencies and local businesses. Every quarter, the libraries have a full schedule of special and ongoing programs planned for the community, and now so does our Mobile Library. Our fall schedule includes various programs offered by other county agencies, including:
• America Recycles Day with Prince William County Public Works
• 911 Story Time and Touch a Truck with Prince William County Fire and Rescue
• Historical Trunk Show with The Prince William County Office of Historic Preservation
• Safe at Home, Safe Alone and Tween Cuisine 101 with local 4-H groups
• Seals on Wheels with Prince William County Circuit Court Clerk's Office
• Social Services at the Library with Prince William County Social Services
• Spark STEM with Prince William County Parks and Recreation
Our Mobile Library also partners with county agencies. Since March 2024, the Mobile Library has attended special community events and visits to other county locations, local schools, and neighborhoods. This fall, the Mobile Library will be visiting the Global Welcome Center with Prince William County Schools, Acclaim at Belmont Bay, Marywood Apartments, Prince William County Police Community Fair, Broad Run Community, Rollins Ford Park, Prince William County Public Safety Expo Extravaganza, Prince William Water Trick or Treatment, and other stops.
I hope you will visit and learn more about library and county services, whether at one of our 12 libraries in Prince William County and the City of Manassas or with our Mobile Library! To learn more about our programs and Mobile Library stops, please visit our Events Calendar at pwcva.gov/library or email our Community Outreach Services division at LibCOSStaffAll@pwcgov.org.
Roll Out to the Library this September for Library Card
Sign-Up Month
Celebrate Library Card Sign-Up Month this September with Prince William Public Libraries and the American Library Association! We invite everyone to discover the incredible resources and opportunities available at your local library by signing up for a library card.
This year, we’re thrilled to have Optimus Prime from the TRANSFORMERS as our special ambassador, highlighting that there’s more than meets the eye at PWPL. Whether you’re looking to enhance your skills, find valuable information, or connect with fellow avid readers, a library card unlocks a world of possibilities.
Today’s libraries are vibrant community centers offering much more than just books. At PWPL, you’ll find diverse programs, job search assistance, homework help, book clubs, author talks, story times, and more.
Here are just a few ways that visitors of all ages can enjoy our libraries this month and all year long:
• Getting a library card is easy and is an essential step toward academic success and lifelong learning for students. Prince William County and City of Manassas residents ages five and up can apply for a free library card online at pwcva.gov/library and any of our libraries and Mobile Library.
• Spark your creativity as a builder or programmer by tinkering in our makerspaces. Located at Bull Run and Central Libraries, our makerspaces are independent workspaces that provide patrons with various machines, tools, and technology to explore, build, collaborate, and create. PWPL’s Makerspaces are designed for patrons 13 years old and older.
• Mine the library’s stacks and databases for new stories and adventures. Whether you want to check out a Transformers DVD or book or try something completely new, we’re always adding new titles for you to enjoy.
• Kickstart your critical thinking skills to defeat the Decepticons of misinformation lurking online. Our Digital Library is a great place to start. With free access to digital resources, including newspapers, free online tutoring, and language learning tools, there’s so much to explore.
• Hitting the road? Use your library card to fuel your mind with books, e-books, audiobooks, and mobile Wi-Fi hotspots. You can even check out a Chromebook to write your own Transformers fanfic or an “I Love Virginia State Parks” backpack to get free parking at all Virginia state parks!
• Transform yourself and join us for a free library program to learn a new skill or try a
new activity. Kids can enjoy reading to dogs, teens can make tabletop game dice, and adults can try basket weaving!
All sentient beings–bots, humans, or anyone else who loves to read–enjoy all the library offers by signing up for a library card at pwcva.gov/library.

Relive History with VR Headsets
Forget everything you thought about virtual reality (VR) headsets! Sure, they’re great for gaming, but at RELIC, we use them to bridge the gap between the past and present.
Imagine viewing your old home movies and photos on a giant screen—right before your eyes! With Meta Quest 3 and its special apps, you can relive those cherished memories in a whole new way. The first step is converting your old media to digital format. Don’t worry if your collection is a jumble of dusty VHS tapes or forgotten 8mm films. RELIC’s digital preservation lab has everything you need, from the Reel2Digital MovieMaker Pro to the ClearClick Video to Digital Converter.
Feeling overwhelmed? No problem! Starting in October, our friendly staff is here to guide you through the process, step-by-step by appointment. We look forward to helping you experience your past in a new dimension!
RELIC received a $16,000 grant from Virginia Humanities to purchase VR headsets and other innovative technologies for the digital preservation lab.

Celebrate Latino Poetry with Us This Fall and Beyond
Prince William Public Libraries is joining 75 libraries and cultural organizations nationwide in Latino Poetry: Places We Call Home, an initiative that explores and celebrates the rich tapestry of Latino poetry. The initiative is directed by the Library of America and funded with generous support from the National Endowment for the Humanities and Emerson Collective.
Celebrate the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans with us. Participate in special events such as Latino poetry and art contests or poetry open mic night, attend our regular Spanish story times and Spanish learning programs, and explore Latino poetry in PWPL’s collection and Digital Library.
Prince William County is the most diverse county in Virginia, with a diversity index of 73.7%, and 25.2% of the population is Hispanic.
In the City of Manassas, the Hispanic/Latino population constitutes around 40% of the residents. PWPL aims to create an inclusive and vibrant program environment that celebrates Latino poetry while engaging and inspiring a diverse audience.
The Latino Poetry: Places We Call Home programs will continue through April 2025, when we will host a reading by local Latino authors during National Poetry Month.
