Director’s Message

We are in the fifth year of Prince William Public Libraries’ 2019–2023 Strategic Plan. One of our focus areas has been expanding our outreach into the community to ensure that all residents are aware of the robust resources their public library offers. Requests for this service, and community partnerships, have increased exponentially during this time. PWPL now has a dedicated Community Outreach Services division with staff who take our message beyond our branch walls.

One resource we continue to pursue is acquiring a new bookmobile. As we celebrated our 70th birthday as a public library in 2022, we discovered that PWPL had a bookmobile in the early days. Our social media post that shared photos from the past bookmobile received many positive comments from the community and a desire to see this service reinstated. I hope Prince William County will have a bookmobile by 2024. I look forward to sharing that news when it comes to fruition.

In the meantime, PWPL staff will continue to promote library services, programs, and resources in other ways. As always, this issue of Explore magazine highlights the many varied programs we continue to offer. Please visit our branches to learn more or participate and check out our extensive Digital Library to fully enjoy the benefits that your library card provides!

There's More to the Story at Your Library

This year’s National Library Week, April 23–29, will be celebrated with the theme “There’s More to the Story.” Libraries are full of stories in various formats, from picture books to large print, audiobooks to e-books, and more. But there’s so much more to the story. Library programming brings communities together for entertainment, education, and connection through book clubs, story times, movie nights, crafting classes, and lectures. Library infrastructure advances communities, providing internet and technology access, literacy skills, and support for businesses, job seekers, and entrepreneurs.

Visit Prince William Public Libraries and explore all it has to offer, including programs for all ages, resources that are available in person or from the comfort of home through our Digital Library, Makerspaces, “Book Club to Go” Book Kits, dedicated children and teen areas, specialized resources and services at MAGIC and RELIC, computers, laptops, and mobile Wi-Fi hotspots, story trails and pollinator gardens, and more.

National Library Week is an annual celebration highlighting the valuable role libraries, librarians, and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening our communities. The first National Library Week was observed in 1958 with the theme “Wake Up and Read!” The 2023 celebration marks the 65th anniversary of the first event.

This National Library Week, the public can show their appreciation and support for libraries by visiting their library in person or at pwcva.gov/library and following Prince William Public Libraries on social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter), using hashtags #pwplibraries and #NationalLibraryWeek.

PWPL’s new Community Outreach Services is Looking to Come to You!

Community Outreach Services is available for story times, teen and adult programming, digital literacy classes and workshops, older adult programming, and more. If your organization would like to sign up for a visit, please fill out a request form at pwcva.gov/department/library/ library-outreach.

Become Part of Summer Reading Volunteer

Experience PWPL’s most popular program from a unique position as a Summer Reading volunteer.

Summer Reading volunteers help with activities such as log activities and prizes for participants, assist in program preparation, and help staff with library programs. If you are between 13–18 years old and interested in volunteering, ask your local librarian about this opportunity. Registration will open in April.

Support

Would you, or someone you know, like to invest in literacy?

Supporting Summer Reading is a great way to do so. The importance of this summer literacy program at public libraries has been proven by research, and participation statistics over the years has reinforced the demand for the Summer Reading program at PWPL.

PWPL does not use the Prince William County budget for Summer Reading. The program is fully funded by corporate and community sponsorships and grants.

Monetary donations help PWPL bring quality programs and performers to our libraries,

purchase books to be given to young readers as Summer Reading completion prizes, and fund enhanced community outreach.

In-kind donations such as coupons and gift cards for products and services to area businesses encourage participation and offer great incentives for children and young adults to nurture a love of reading and complete the program challenges.

Learn more and donate at https://give. classy.org/PWPLsummer.

Happy National Volunteer Week!

April 16–22

Our work would not be possible without the help and support of our wonderful volunteers. To all those who have volunteered their time for Prince William Public Libraries we say, THANK YOU!

devices are simple to use and adaptive to a person’s individual needs. This service was created by PWPL’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Work Group, which strives to enhance equity, diversity, and inclusion in library programming and services.

New Teen Space at Chinn Park Library

An interactive Teen Space at Chinn Park Library is now open for young adults to enjoy and spend quality time together. The space is equipped with laptop desks, a large TV screen, a gaming area, a collaborative workspace, board games, and comfortable study and lounge seating. Young adult books and materials are shelved right next to the Teen Space. The space was designed by area teens as part of Chinn Park Library’s Teen Advisory Group.

“With the help of the teens in our community, staff created the Teen Space where they can come and be themselves around their peers. This space was created to fill a gap we recognized in our library branch – we were missing a dedicated space for teens to call their own,” remarks Chinn Park Library Manager Zach Roberts. “Chinn Park Library is a cornerstone of the Woodbridge community. We are a place where everyone is welcome for free, for any reason.”

The Teen Space was built thanks to a $16,000 donation from the Friends of the Chinn Park Library. PWPL now has dedicated teen areas at Bull Run, Central, Chinn Park, Haymarket Gainesville, and Montclair Libraries. Providing dedicated teen-friendly spaces in libraries has been one of the goals of PWPL’s 2019–2023 Strategic Plan. PWPL recognizes the importance of offering an informal learning environment that specifically recognizes teen needs and interests. A dedicated, attractive, engaging, and teen-oriented

PWPL is always researching and identifying new tools and technology to add to our two Makerspaces at Bull Run and Central Libraries. Recently, PWPL purchased a Glowforge Basic 3D laser printer that truly makes magical things at the push of a button. Glowforge is a precision laser cutter, engraver, and printer that works with wood, leather fabric, acrylic, paper, and more. The printer has a work area of 18 inches in depth and 20 inches in width and supports JPG, PNG, SVG, PDF, and other file formats. Glowforge makes it easy to create useful, beautiful, and practical things.

Previously, Central Library’s 3D printers were available to produce a design that was sent online. The Glowforge will be the first 3D printer at PWPL for community members to try it out themselves. Central Library will schedule appointments for anyone 13 and older. Call 703792-8360 to schedule an appointment.

space creates a positive, safe environment for learning, socializing, and leisure activities.

American Library Association (ALA) supports public libraries nationwide in creating teen spaces and interactively acknowledging teens and their needs by supporting adolescent development, creating an environment that encourages emotional, social, and intellectual growth, and building a sense of teen belonging, community involvement, and appreciation of how a library fits into their day-to-day lives.

Congratulations to PWPL's First Adult Writing Contest Winners

The success and momentum of PWPL’s Teen Writing Contest inspired PWPL to offer the same opportunity to adults. Adults were encouraged to showcase their creativity by writing poetry or short story prose. PWPL received 26 entries, 15 in the poetry category and 11 in the prose category. “We were impressed by both the turnout and the quality of writing that was submitted. We looked at creativity, originality, technique, and emotional impact of the entries. While there can be only three winners in each category, all writers deserve applause,” remarked Sarah from the team of librarian judges.

Prose entries could be no longer than 2,500 words and poetry no longer than a page. Competitors had to be 18 or older and residents of Prince William

A Fall Hike

Brian Bickers

As I view the beautiful rolling hills

My heart soars and my chest fills

Vibrant red leaves crunch under my shoes

Each one cracking through the autumn blues

While I clamber over each ridge

My body protests just a smidge

Up and down, over and through It is a journey my calves begin to rue

I see the ending that I seek For this must be the final peak!

But I do not know my gaffe

The next two hills wait… and laugh

I hate cats. I would never own a cat. Dude didn’t count, because I didn’t own Dude. He was just the Kitty Visitor who hung out at our house.

His visits began one snowy winter day, after he stood up on his back feet, pressed his white belly against my kitchen window and began to meow noisily, a very insistent let-me-in meow, bossy and pitiful at the same time. At first, I ignored him. I never liked cats since one scratched me as a child. But it was cold and Dude, just a kitten then, looked so helpless, so I opened the door. In he came, without hesitation. I gave him a bowl of milk and some canned tuna. Little did I know then that the tuna sealed our relationship forever, as far as the cat was concerned.

Dude originally belonged to a family who had three kids, a dog and four other cats, all of whom ran wild and unsupervised. When his alleged owners moved,

New Outreach Materials

Prince William Public Libraries continuously looks for opportunities to enhance and grow our physical collection. In recent years, we introduced two new Makerspaces at Bull Run and Central Libraries, providing patrons 13 and older with state-of-the-art machines, tools, and technology to explore, build, collaborate, and create. We began offering mobile Wi-Fi hotspots to give library cardholders access to the internet at home or on the go. Last summer, we began lending out Chromebook laptops, giving more residents the ability to work and play with new technology outside our branches.

While all these enhancements have been well received by our older patrons, we also want to be a source for both learning and fun for our younger visitors. Thanks to Dollar General Literacy

Foundation’s Family Literacy Grant of $10,000, PWPL is excited to purchase new outreach materials. Board books and picture books, Launchpads, puzzles, and STEM toys will enhance PWPL’s outreach efforts. These new items will allow our Community Outreach Services division to have an even bigger impact in our community.

Dude stayed. Our next-door neighbors Tom and Julie became his primary food supply; my husband Bill and I, the secondary source. I guess you could say our two households shared joint custody of the cat.

Although cats are often stereotyped as aloof, Dude was a party animal at heart. Late afternoons found him waiting on the sidewalk for the school bus and the commuters walking home from the bus stop. Everyone-- kids with backpacks and women in high heels and men in ties--stopped to pet him, and most talked to him as well. When I drove up to the house and opened my car door, nine times out of ten he was right there to greet me. When Bill arrived home from a jog, Dude always rested beside him on the porch, as if basking in the reflected glory of a fellow runner/hunter.
