Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. It was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in challenges to books in schools, bookstores, and libraries. Banned Books Week highlights the value of free and open access to information and brings together the entire book community — librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and express ideas.
Deborah L. WrightEfforts to ban books have persisted in American history, but those efforts have reached unprecedented heights in recent years.
In 2022, the American Library Association (ALA) documented 1,269 demands to censor library books and resources – the highest number of attempted book bans since ALA began compiling data about censorship in libraries
more than 20 years ago. Ninety percent of the overall number of books challenged were part of attempts to censor multiple titles.
“Let Freedom Read” is the theme for Banned Books Week, October 1–7, 2023. Our branches highlight this event every year to support our mission of bringing people, information, and ideas together to build community and transform lives. More than ever, the freedom
September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when Prince William Public Libraries joins the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries nationwide to remind everyone about the valuable resources available with a library card. From borrowing books, e-books, and audiobooks to getting homework help, learning new skills, or attending a book club or story time, a library card helps everyone do more of what they enjoy, all without stretching their budget.
Are you interested in starting a new hobby? Whether you want to learn more about automobile maintenance on our Digital Library or research ziplining for your upcoming trip to Costa Rica, Prince William Public Libraries has books, DVDs, and online resources to get you started. Plus – we have programs to introduce you to book clubs, crafts, gaming, and more for all ages.
A library card provides new opportunities at our two makerspaces at Bull Run and Central Libraries. Use one of our sewing machines, Cricuts, or Glowforges to create, and Central Library’s Whisper Room is perfect for recording your new song or podcast. You can even create a 3D printing design, and we’ll print it for free!
If you’re thinking about starting or growing a small business, MAGIC, the Management and Government Information Center at Chinn Park Library, has specialized
staff and resources to assist members of the community, including local government agencies and area businesses and nonprofits, to start or grow a business, retrieve industry information, seek grant funding, and access laws and regulations.
There's something for everyone at Prince William Public Libraries, and signing up for a library card is the first step toward academic achievement and lifelong learning for students. It's elemental, really – everyone should have one!
Prince William Public Libraries, along with libraries everywhere, continues to adapt and expand services to meet the evolving needs of our community. To sign up for a library card or to learn more about the library’s resources and programs, please visit pwcva.gov/ library.
If you’re attending the third annual Community Fair on Saturday, September 16, stop by our booth to sign up for a library card. Sponsored
to read as one chooses, or with the guidance of a caregiver in the case of children and teens, is a freedom that we celebrate in our Libraries. I hope you will celebrate this freedom with us in October and throughout the year.
live music, and more.
Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. During the month, the ALA and libraries work together in a national effort to ensure every child signs up for a library card.
Now that you’re getting back into the routine of a new school year, Prince William Public Libraries can be a valuable resource for learners of all ages. Here are a few ways we can help, no matter what your school year goals may be:
Get a library card! Just in case you or someone you know doesn’t have a library card, start your application online by clicking "Get a Library Card" at pwcva.gov/library or show identification with your current address at a local library branch. Another option is to sign up for a digital library card. A digital library card allows access to the Digital Library without visiting a library branch. You can always upgrade your digital library card to a physical library card in the future.
Check out a Chromebook laptop and mobile Wi-Fi hotspot. You do not need a Google account to use a Chromebook, but with a Google account, you can create and save files, such as Google Docs. The mobile Wi-Fi hotspot gives you free internet access from anywhere so you can do research for school and surf the internet.
Visit Our Digital Library. The PWPL Digital Library provides free access to thousands of online and digital resources, including e-books, audiobooks, newspapers, and premium websites. Search by Subject or organize the resources by Read, Listen, Watch, or Learn. The Digital Library is great
for learning and enjoying the digital resources we have to offer.
Reserve a Study Room. If you need a place to study or work on a group project, anyone 13 years and older can reserve a Group Study Room at the Central, Chinn Park, Dumfries, Manassas City, Montclair, and Haymarket Gainesville Libraries online at pwcva. gov/library. You can make a reservation up to 14 days in advance and schedule a Group Study Room twice per week or up to two hours.
Attend a library program. We offer free programs for all ages, and there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re interested in Baby Story Time, learning chess, or want to join a book club, there are hundreds of options. Pick up a copy of Explore magazine or visit pwcva.gov/ library to see upcoming programs.
Learn a new skill at our makerspaces. We have two makerspaces: Bull Run Library’s Hive 8051 and Central Library’s Studio 8601. A makerspace is an independent workspace inside the library that provides patrons with various machines, tools, and technology to explore, build, collaborate, and create. Prince William Public Libraries' makerspaces are designed for patrons 13 years old and older.
Go back to school with Career Online High School. Career Online High School
(COHS) is an online high school diploma and career certification program available through PWPL. This program offers free enrollment to a limited number of qualified adult students at least 20 years old.
This school year, there’s even more to explore at Prince William Public Libraries and online at pwcva.gov/library.
All Ages October 2–19
Register at pwcva.gov/library or on the Beanstack Tracker app on your smartphone to join the "Imagine a Day Without Water" Service Authority challenge. Check off completed activities as you learn more about how important clean water is. You could even win a prize for completing all the activities!
Prince William Public Libraries has been selected as one of 12 public libraries in Virginia to receive the Welcoming Library: Traveling Collection, a collection of 30 acclaimed picture books that feature New Arrival and New American families, discussion materials, and a pop-up book display. Library of Virginia has awarded this in-kind grant to libraries serving communities with large percentages of immigrant residents. According to the 2020 U.S. Census, Prince William County is the most diverse county in Virginia, with a diversity index of 73.7%, and ranks #10 most diverse county in the U.S.
Prince William Public Libraries has received a collection of books curated by I’m Your Neighbor Books, a nonprofit organization that strives to build a more welcoming nation with children’s literature. The books depict immigrant and New Generation families and were hand-selected to reflect Prince William County demographics. The books include high-quality stickers on the back endpapers where readers can find unique questions asking them to establish a personal reaction and connection to the story. In addition, each book is highlighted with a cover sticker with “I’m Your Neighbor” in 10 languages.
Prince William Public Libraries also received two mobile display units that will allow our libraries to display these books together. Look for the displays at Manassas City Library and Potomac Library, where you can read the books while at the library. We plan to purchase more copies of these books so patrons can check them out for home use. Also, stay tuned for new programs utilizing these books.
Do you feel overwhelmed by new technologies and constant updates? Prince William Public Libraries is introducing new programs to help you tackle this challenge.
Prince William Public Libraries was awarded the PLA Digital Literacy Workshop Incentive grant, supported by AT&T. The Public Library Association (PLA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), has developed DigitalLearn materials and resources for libraries to teach basic digital skills.
Prince William Public Libraries applied for this grant to enhance its capabilities to empower community members with mobile technology skills and broaden the range of work and learning opportunities available to them and their families.
With the grant funds, Central and Manassas City Libraries will host digital literacy workshops, “Mobile Device Basics (Android)” and “Mobile Device Basics (iOS),” aimed at helping patrons learn the basics of these mobile operating systems and better leverage the potential of mobile technology in their personal and professional lives. These programs will be added soon to our Online Events Calendar, pwcva.gov/library. Both libraries will have tablets available to better assist those patrons who cannot bring their devices or may not own a device. In addition, library staff will help interested community members navigate the digital resources provided by DigitalLearn so they can seek help and education from home. All
learning resources will be available in English and Spanish.
Computer skills are essential to complete everyday tasks. Community members who lack these skills, internet access, or devices often rely on public libraries to help them break through the digital divide.
Prince William Public Libraries offers free public computers with internet at libraries, provides free Wi-Fi access at all 12 branches and their outdoor areas, and loans Chromebooks and mobile Wi-Fi hotspots. Patrons can improve their tech skills by participating in various library programs and using the Digital Library, available for free with a library card.
If you live, work, own property, or attend school in Prince William County, Manassas, or surrounding jurisdictions, you are eligible for a free library card. To get a card, you must provide identification with your current address. Minors (ages 5–17) are also required to have a parent or legal guardian complete and sign a Library User Agreement Form.
Borrow books, Chromebook laptops, DVDs, Launchpad tablets, magazines, and mobile Wi-Fi hotspots for three weeks.
Return your materials to any branch location or book drop.
Place holds on materials through the Online Catalog, in person, or by phone. You can have up to 20 holds at a time.
Most items can be renewed four times (unless requested by another patron) online, in person, or by phone.
Sign up for email or text message reminders or change your email preferences through your online account.
As of July 1, 2021, PWPL is no longer charging fines for late items. Patrons are still responsible for paying fees for lost or damaged items. Please be sure to pay your outstanding fees, as your account is suspended when fees on your account reach $20.00.
The Digital Library provides free access to thousands of online and digital resources including e-books, audiobooks, newspapers, and premium websites with apps like OverDrive’s Libby, hoopla Digital, and LinkedIn Learning. Everything from automotive help to homework help to premium news access is available on the Digital Library for you to Read, Listen, Watch, or Learn from wherever you are.

Our story times focus on pre-reading skills that all children need to become good readers, and they help parents practice these skills at home.
