If the One Constant Thing in Life is Change...
This year, Prince William Public Libraries celebrates our 70th year serving the communities of Prince William County and the City of Manassas. The first public library for the county came into existence in 1952. Since then, we have opened 12 branches, some of which have changed addresses over their lifetime. We have added technologies our staff and patrons would not have dreamed of in 1952. We have expanded our circulating collections from printed books to include various audio formats, mobile Wi-Fi hotspots, Chromebook laptops, SAD lamps, American Girl dolls, and the list keeps growing.
Initially, all reference sources had to be used onsite within our branches. Now, many informational resources can be accessed digitally and remotely, 24/7. In addition, library spaces have evolved to include meeting room spaces, outdoor spaces such as the Pavillion at Independent Hill Library, the patio at Potomac Library, and Central Green’s large, fenced space featuring a Story Trail and hands-on learning opportunities. There are also welcoming outside reading areas at Haymarket Gainesville and Montclair Libraries. Programs have grown from story times and Summer Reading to all types of book discussion groups, STEM activities, Winter Reading, and many informational programs for inquiring minds. In the past two years, PWPL has opened two Makerspaces for the community at Bull Run and Central Libraries, providing hands-on experiences and learning opportunities. If the one constant thing in life is change, then PWPL is consistently looking to the future to meet and embrace those changes that impact how the community utilizes their public library. If you haven’t visited a branch recently, please stop by our 12 locations. Take a moment to reflect on the changes you have seen in your library over the years.
Prince William Public Libraries Recognized with MarCom Award

MarCom Awards is an international creative competition that honors excellence in marketing and communication. In 2022, MarCom received over 6,000 entries from United States, Canada, and 43 other countries. In 2022, PWPL received six other marketing and communications awards – a PR Xchange Award from the American Library Association (ALA) for the “PWPL’s Wi-Fi Has Left the Building!” video; two Hermes Creative Awards, a Gold Award for the Strategic Marketing Campaign “PWPL Brand Drives the Miles,” and Honorable Mention for Electronic Media/Social Media/YouTube Video “PWPL’s Wi-Fi Has Left the Building!”; and three dotCOMM Awards, a Platinum Award for PWPL’s 2021 Annual Report, a Gold Award for Summer 2021 Explore Magazine, and an Honorable Mention for “PWPL’s Wi-Fi Has Left the Building!” video.

Enjoy Festive Holiday Events at Libraries
The winter season brings with it the beloved holidays and there are never too many opportunities to breathe in the smell of ginger cookies, showcase your creativity with holiday ornaments, and display your warm heart to those who may feel lonely during holidays. make craft kits to enjoy at home or visit a library for collaborative seasonal crafts. We will merge traditional with innovative when making 3D tiny winter cottages and 3D printed snowflakes, and we will celebrate nature when creating eco-friendly winter wonderlands. It’s difficult to choose the highlight of all these holiday programs, but the annual Festival of Trees at Haymarket Gainesville Library is certainly among the top picks. And don’t forget to share your holiday smiles with others. Through PWPL’s Holiday Smiles program, you can bring a smile to those living in area assisted living centers.

Check Out SAD Lamps to Help You Get Through the Short Days
Shorter days during the winter mean less sunlight which can lead to decreased mood and energy levels, and even to Seasonal Affective Disorder, or “SAD.” Prince William Public Libraries offer a popular remedy – a SAD lamp, a specialized light device that mimics sunlight. SAD lamps can be put on hold, checked out for threeweek periods, and renewed. Search for “SAD Lamp” in the online catalog or check one out from your library.

Sports
With Prince William Public Libraries
Are you thinking about trying a new winter sport or improving your skills at the sport you already enjoy? Or do you prefer to cozy up at home and read about cold-weather sports? Prince William Public Libraries has you covered either way. From Warren Smith’s face-paced “Go Ski” book-and-DVD package with step-bystep instruction, advice, and encouragement to “Championship Hockey Drills & Ice Time Management” video on hoopla with creative drills and techniques, the library has great resources to learn a new sport. If novels are more your style, give “The Family You Make” by Jill Shalvis or the dark thriller “One by One” by Ruth Ware a try. If you want to learn tips about staying safe in the winter, check out Dumfries Library’s “Celebrate Winter!” special event series. We also encourage you to complete the Winter Reading program to win a free pass for ice skating.

STEM Programming is Expanding at Prince William Public Libraries
$5,000 Grant Secured to Enhance STEM Kits, Programming
Prince William Public Libraries (PWPL) has been awarded a $5,000 Community Impact Grant from BAE Systems for “Sparking Love for STEM with Modern STEM Kits” project.
PWPL will expand its STEM Kits inventory and enhance STEM programming with innovative items such as a mobile STEM lab composed of engineering building components that encourages students to practice collaboration,
problem-solving, critical thinking, and perseverance. For younger children, PWPL will purchase a coding mat with activity cards that will offer them a simple way to learn block-based coding, basic math principles, and collaborative problem-solving. Another item, a Sphero Bolt Education Pack with programmable robots, will teach students programming
Girls Participated in a Special Coding Project
The fall 2022 sessions of the Girls Who Code program at Central and Haymarket Gainesville Libraries had a special component. Thanks to the volunteer instructors–professional coders from CGI–girls participated in the Congressional App Challenge, the most prestigious prize in student computer science. Students learn to code, produce apps that address problems locally, nationally, and globally, and submit the apps for judging by teachers, computer science experts, and Congressional App Challenge alumni. The challenge encourages middle and high school students to learn to code and inspires them to pursue careers in computer science.
“CGI is mentoring students in creating apps to submit for the Congressional App Challenge, which is a competition that occurs in Congressional Districts throughout the U.S. The winners will be invited to D.C. to showcase their app at the Capitol at an event called House of Code,” remarked Anne Swanson, STEM@CGI Director. “CGI mentors worked with the students to develop an idea for the app, storyboard it, and then code it in Thunkable.”
The girls submitted their apps in November, and winners will be announced in December. We wish the girls luck and will post updates on social media.
Thanks to support from Micron Technology, Micron Foundation, PWPL purchased additional laptops in 2022 to allow more girls to attend Girls Who Code programs.
Serving and Building the Community
Prince William Public Libraries strives to respond to the demands of its patrons. STEM programs have been among the most popular, with Girls Who Code topping the list. PWPL is committed to providing access to future-ready, easily accessible technology and offering community-responsive enrichment through its programming. PWPL appreciates the support of donors who help us purchase modern educational resources and offer STEM programs that are engaging, effective, and enjoyable to our community.
Library STEM programs help to bridge the achievement gaps between high- and low-social-class children by providing
and inspire curiosity, creativity, and invention through connected play and coding.
Earlier in 2022, PWPL added air rockets, Bits & Bytes card games, digital microscopes, fossil and gemstone dig kits, Squishy Circuits, and more to its STEM inventory through the support from Micron Technology, Micron Foundation.
Makerspaces: What Will You Make?
Prince William Public Libraries now offers two Makerspaces at Bull Run and Central Libraries. Makerspaces are independent workspaces inside the library that provide patrons with machines, tools, and technology to explore, build, collaborate, and create. Makerspaces offer:
• Art, Crafts, and Jewelry Tools and Machines
• Heat Press and Laminator
• Comb Binding Machine
• Sewing Machines
• Vacuum Forming Machine

cost-free STEM education opportunities to children. Many STEM items are expensive and, therefore, are only affordable to some families, limiting access. Similarly, while there are many after-school STEM education centers in this area, many parents cannot afford to send their children there.
Thanks to library programs, children and young adults have access to the innovative and proven educational tools helping them explore STEM in a fun and engaging way and perhaps encouraging them to pursue further education and career in these fields.
Visit our Online Events Calendar at pwcva.gov/library for upcoming STEM programs.
