2023-24 PVC HIGHLIGHTS

The Princeton Varsity Club would like to thank its members for their continued support throughout the 2023-24 academic year. GARY WALTERS ’67 PVC AWARDS BANQUET

Over 700 members of the Princeton Athletics’ community gathered as part of the Gary Walters ’67 PVC Awards Banquet to honor the Class of 2024 and kick-off Reunions Weekend. Graduating student-athletes were joined by family, coaches and athletics supporters for a celebration dinner that included special award presentations, highlights and remarks from Tiger seniors and alumni. The seniors also received their varsity letter sweaters, officially welcoming them to the Athletics alumni ranks.

The PVC also honored longtime PVC Board of Directors Vice Chairman John Berger ’74 and PVC Honorary Lifetime Members Olivia Hompe ’17 *21 and Gaby Joseph ’18. To celebrate the spirit of serving the broader Princeton community, the Princeton rowing and women’s track & field programs were awarded the inaugural Ford Tiger Game Changers Award.

“As you think about giving back, select the right time for integrating service into your life, but don’t wait too long.

Be sure to select what is really meaningful to you. And whatever you choose, make your volunteer service enjoyable!”

TEAM IMPACT AWARENESS GAME

Six Princeton varsity teams have partnered with Team IMPACT to bring children facing serious illnesses and disabilities into their teams. In February, athletes from men’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s lacrosse, softball, and men’s and women’s swimming & diving hosted a Team IMPACT Awareness Game when Princeton men’s basketball hosted Brown. The event featured a pregame pizza party, player high five tunnel and ice cream social with the children and their families.

FELLOWSHIP CAMPUS OF THE YEAR AWARD

Princeton Athletics was named the 2024 Team IMPACT Division I Fellowship Campus of the Year. Grace Jackson ’24 (softball) and Maddie Seltzer ’25 (women’s diving) served in Team IMPACT Fellow roles helping to increase the number of matches on campus and organize events for Team IMPACT families. The Fellowship Awards were created to recognize the hard work of different individuals and teams over the course of a year and to highlight the dedication, creative ideas, and growth of programming across campuses.

“Having Brooke join our Princeton softball family has been one of the most rewarding experiences during my time on campus.”

I am so grateful for how accepting and supportive the Princeton athletics community has been in welcoming Team IMPACT, and I cannot wait to watch it continue to grow.”

COACH FOR COLLEGE

The PVC once again teamed with Coach for College to send six studentathletes to rural Vietnam for a unique three-week summer service experience. Over the past decade, 70 Princeton student-athletes have participated in the program, which invites student-athletes from all over the country to combine and apply their passions for education and athletics. Athletes gain valuable leadership skills, lifelong friendships and exciting cultural experiences as they serve as coaches and educators in underserved Vietnamese middle schools.

“Coach for College was an important reminder of what a privilege and opportunity education is and how important it is that I value and utilize mine to its fullest extent while continuing to promote and help open doors for others.

I was also reminded of just how big this world is and how much we have to learn from one other!”

JPALS MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

Princeton Athletics has partnered Johnson Park Elementary to pilot a new student-athlete mentorship program. Nearly 30 student-athletes have been matched with an elementary student they met during a special celebration at the school earlier this spring. The athletes led a cheerful high-five tunnel as the students were introduced in a starting lineup and then met their new JPAL at the finish line where they presented them with a custom MVP (Most Valuable Pal) medal. The event also included team photos, a pizza party and lots of fun recess activities on the playground.

STUDENT-ATHLETE SERVICE COUNCIL

The PVC is proud to support the Student-Athlete Service Council (SASC). Founded in 2013, the council grew to 26 members last year with studentathletes representing 14 teams. The council strives to create meaningful volunteer opportunities while connecting student-athletes with the community organizations and philanthropic causes that they are most passionate about.

Members attended monthly meetings where they discussed ideas for new community service initiatives and participated in special volunteer projects. Throughout the year SASC members organized a letter writing campaign for military members, crafted blankets for the Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania and delivered valentine’s to senior citizens in Trenton. The council also made special visits to the Princeton Mobile Food Pantry and the Caring Cooks Kitchen at the Ronald McDonald House.

50 letters written to military service members through Operation Gratitude

100 gift bags packed for low-income senior citizens for Valentine's Day

30 meals cooked for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House

Working in concert with the Princeton Department of Athletics, the Student-Athlete Service Council also assists with PVC sponsored service initiatives. These activities promote the department’s overall mission of Education Through Athletics and offer student-athletes across all 38 teams opportunities to connect with their campus and local communities.

During 2023-24, SASC members helped the PVC introduce a new JPALS elementary school mentorship program and participated in a recordbreaking number of school visits through Reading with the Tigers. Council members also organized a special field day event with the Princeton Best Buddies chapter and hosted a special ice cream party for six children with Team IMPACT. Additionally, SASC leaders rallied their teammates behind the Teams & Toys gift drive and the NGWSD Clinic to support hundreds of young children in the greater Princeton community.

LEADHERS: SPORTS, RACE & SOCIETY LECTURE

The Sports, Race and Society Lecture Series brought professional sports executives Swin Cash, Allison Feaster and Dr. Nyaka NiiLampti ’97 to campus for an authentic conversation about leading as women of color in the sports industry. The program, made possible by the Stephen C. Mills ’81 Fund and in partnership with the Center for African-American Studies, highlighted the challenges that each woman overcame in their ascension to esteemed front office positions, and the ways that they use their platforms to pay it forward.

“We have no choice in this role; this platform comes with tremendous responsibility and I want everyone to be clear what my purpose is.

And that is not only to serve my organization and lead, but also to provide exposure, provide opportunity and access, and to plant seeds for not just young girls, but those who are traditionally nonexistent in our space.”

Allison Feaster

NATIONAL GIRLS & WOMEN IN SPORTS DAY

In celebration of National Girls & Women in Sports Day, the PVC hosted its annual NGWSD Youth Clinic. Dedicated to uplifting and inspiring a new generation of female athletes, the clinic featured a variety of sports stations led by 15 Princeton women’s programs. A record 300 children attended the clinic ahead of the Princeton women’s basketball game against Brown where they played games and learned new sports and techniques alongside the lady Tigers.

PVC COACHES LUNCHEON SERIES

The PVC continued its longstanding Coaches Luncheon series, featuring Tiger head coaches and student-athletes from a variety of varsity programs. Head coaches shared program highlights and provided season updates to PVC members, corporate partners and campus colleagues. Luncheon guests were also treated to a panel of student-athletes who spoke about the experiences, values and growth that come with being Princeton student-athletes.

““Education Through Athletics is one of the big reasons that I chose Princeton in the first place. And I think it’s taken that to a new level. It’s not easy being a student-athlete here, but you learn to really lean on other people like your teammates socially and academically. And through that you develop these bonds and learn to compete for something greater than yourself. And I think that’s the greatest lesson that anybody can learn.”

Nicholas Lim ’24 | Men’s Swimming

PNC BANK STUDENT-ATHLETE ACHIEVER AWARD

As part of each luncheon, Princeton Athletics and corporate partner PNC Bank present the PNC Student-Athlete Achiever Award to two Tiger studentathletes from that season in recognition of their high achievement and positive impact academically, athletically and in their respective communities. Ian Murphy ’24 (men’s ice hockey) and Brianna Mponzi ’24 (women’s track & field) were this winter’s recipients, and Victoria Liu ’25 (women’s golf) and Sam Kleiner ’25 (men’s heavyweight rowing) received the award this spring.

“Success in the classroom and on the ice are two things that I and everyone else here take a lot of pride in and have been integral parts of our identities our entire lives.

But service, especially at Princeton, has helped me connect with the community and form deep connections that have made Princeton a true home away from home during my four years.”

PVC ON THE ROAD

PVC members showed their Orange and Black spirit throughout the spring, both on campus and on the road. The PVC hosted its annual Winter Athletics Reception in February, bringing together athletics supporters across multiple sports and Athletics Friends Groups in conjunction with several home Tiger competitions.

During the thrills of March Madness, hundreds of alumni joined the PVC on the road to support the Princeton basketball teams during their postseason play. The Tiger faithful gathered in New York City around the men’s and women’s Ivy League Basketball Tournaments, where they were treated to the Princeton women cutting down the nets in celebration of their fifth consecutive Ivy League Tournament title.

The PVC then accompanied the women’s team to their NCAA Tournament Regional in Iowa City, where Princetonians - including many from the Midwest region - came together for a pre-game reception before cheering on the Tigers against West Virginia in Carver Hawkeye Arena.
