Dear Friends, In December 2020, the Princeton Senior Resource Center took a major step forward as an organization, finalizing the purchase of our new facility at 101 Poor Farm Road. This new facility, The Nancy S. Klath Center for Lifelong Learning, will become a central hub of our operations and will supplement our current facility at the Suzanne Patterson Building at 45 Stockton Street. The new building, opening in October 2021, will feature state-of-the-art classrooms, a welcoming participant lounge, an expanded technology lab, offices for our administrative operations, and much more.

This year’s annual report, Bridging the Past, Building the Future, celebrates our rich history as an organization and looks forward to an exciting future. As you turn these pages, you will see familiar faces from our past sharing their hopes for the future of PSRC. You will also celebrate with us the twentieth anniversary of The Evergreen Forum, our premier lifelong learning program.

Looking back also helps us to look ahead to an exciting future. The new building will be a community asset that will serve the older adults throughout our region for years to come. The technology that we have adapted since the start of the global pandemic will enable us to offer our programs and services to new audiences and keep people connected whether they enter our programs physically or virtually. Our focus on lifelong learning will continue to grow, expanding The Evergreen Forum to reach even more participants and launching new programs to meet the needs of a growing community of older adults.

A LEGACY OF GENEROSITY The J. Seward Johnson Sr. Assistance Fund of the Princeton Senior Resource Center was established in December 2010 with an initial $250,000 gift from the J. Seward Johnson Sr. 1963 Charitable Trust to help under-resourced older adults in Princeton age in place. “The objective,” written at the time of the fund’s establishment, “is to help low- and moderate-income people remain independent in their own homes safely with dignity and self-determination.”

According to the Princeton Area Community Foundation (PACF), where the assistance fund is held, J. Seward Johnson Sr. was a generous philanthropist who left a profound legacy throughout the state of New Jersey and the greater Princeton region. “J. Seward Johnson Sr.,” they write, “was a man of great accomplishments, broad imagination, and unbridled generosity. He was an adept businessman, an innovator, a lover of the sea, a farmer, an art collector, among other things.”

Because of the generosity of the J. Seward Johnson Sr. 1963 Charitable Trust, many lives have been positively impacted through the Princeton Senior Resource Center’s assistance fund named in his honor. Grants have been given over the last ten years to support social work services, case management, home repairs and modifications, health and dental care, physical therapy, and much more.

Dr. Drew Dyson, CEO of PSRC, notes, “The J. Seward Johnson Sr. Fund has quite simply transformed the lives of many older adults in our community. When our staff encounters a need in the community, we are able to respond in a way that supports the individual need while upholding the grace and dignity of the person(s) we are able to assist.

I am profoundly grateful for the J. Seward Johnson Sr. 1963 Charitable Trust for believing in the work we do and making this fund available to support us in our mission to help older adults thrive. I am also grateful for Mr. Johnson’s philanthropic foresight in establishing the trust to carry out his charitable legacy.”

Princeton Senior Resource Center

Throughout Princeton Senior Resource Center’s history, many of the friendships formed have helped to shape the stable foundation we know. And because of their legacy gifts, PSRC is able to endure changing times and build the bridge for its future. One such treasured relationship is with the Klaths.

As longtime Princeton residents and patrons of PSRC, Norman and Nancy Klath supported our quality programs and services for many years. Nancy was a strong advocate for lifelong learning both in her career at Princeton University’s library and, in her volunteer service with the Friends of the Princeton Public Library, the Friends of the Princeton University Library, the Princeton Adult School, and the Princeton Senior Resource Center. In February 2021, active board member Norm Klath, made a $1.3 million gift to the $5 million capital campaign to honor his late wife Nancy S. Klath.

“I am so very pleased for the opportunity to honor Nancy’s life in the naming of this new facility,” said Mr. Klath. “Nancy’s life was committed to lifelong learning and she loved this community. I am heartened that this new building will carry forward her legacy in this way.”

A capital campaign for Lifelong Learning at PSRC is currently in a leadership phase and will launch publicly in the months ahead.

“I am hopeful,” Mr. Klath adds, “that many throughout the community will join me and PSRC in making this campaign successful.”

We’ve been so impressed over the years with PSRC, so to ensure the long-term viability of all the services provided through the center, Nancy and I have named the Princeton Senior Resource Center in our will and joined the Jocelyn Helms Legacy Society with pride.”

CELEBRATING TWENTY YEARS OF EVERGREEN

“Evergreen Forum can be full of surprises, even for the course leader.

I taught Human Evolution for several years. Once during a class discussion of homo erectus, an early human form that had existed a million years ago, a participant raised his hand. He declared that he owned a fossil skull of one that had been unearthed in another country. During the next class, we passed it around to examine it one-by-one, while we all marveled at being able to handle something this old and meaningful. In Evergreen Forum classes, there are always surprises, and everyone, including the course leader, comes away full of wonder and enrichment.”

EVERGREEN FORUM — CELEBRATING TWENTY YEARS

“I have been part of The Evergreen Forum since 2006, as both course leader and course taker, and I have loved it all—especially the people I have met, many of whom are now friends. As a student I most frequently attended the Friday morning science sessions, first under David Southgate and now under Bob Robinson—and what I learned about gut microbiomes and the physics of bouncing balls has frequently leaked into the poems I write. The classes I have taught range from Nabokov’s unreliable narrator to Elizabeth Strout’s irascible Olive Kittredge. During our second class on Alice Munro, the Canadian novelist and short story writer, she received the Nobel Prize in Literature, and we celebrated with a party. Class member and founder of The Evergreen Forum Judith Pinch sat in as Munro—regal as the writer in her white hair, our Alice. Evergreen is our school— our courses, our learning, our friends, our joy.”

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE EVERGREEN FORUM The Beginnings In the fall of 2000, four retired Princetonians (Judith and Harry Pinch, Carolyn Wilson, and David Southgate) met to discuss a learning opportunity for older residents of the larger Princeton area. They hoped to start a program that differed from the available possibilities.

It would encourage discussion and participation, unlike the Princeton University auditing program.

It would meet in the daytime, unlike the Princeton Adult School.

Unlike both of those programs, it would depend entirely on volunteer teachers.

They had no place, no money, no staff. No name.

The Name There is not much clarity about the origins of the name. “I was actually not in the room when the name was picked, “ said Judith Pinch. “Evergreen” was picked, she says, for its suggestion of continuing youthfulness, “Forum” for its suggestion of collaborative learning and discussion.

PSRC Home Serendipity. A friend of Carolyn’s introduced the founders to Jan Marmor, then executive director of the Princeton Senior Resource Center, who offered to find space for the new classes. Volunteers would do most of the work.

The first four courses were offered in spring, 2001. Two of those courses are still running regularly: “Plays off the Page,” led by Barbara Hertzberg and “Science in the News” (at first “Science Tuesday on Friday”) Annual Report 2020–2021

then led by Henry Pinch and David Southgate.

By fall 2001 there were six courses. By fall 2005 there were fourteen courses offered, already straining the classroom and parking space at the Suzanne Patterson Building. Executive Director, Susan Hoskins, sought available space in other venues.

So The Evergreen Forum had a promising beginning.

Growing Pains Growth came attended by problems. As more instructors needed audiovisual aids, the PSRC staff was called on to provide additional services, including equipment and technological assistance. It was becoming more difficult to find space for all the classes, so there was an improvisational quality about some of the “classrooms.” While most of the classes still met in the Suzanne Patterson Building and Monument Hall, it was necessary to rent space in such diverse places as the Princeton Public Library, the D & R Greenway building, and local churches. A few classes even met in instructors’ homes. By 2012, The Evergreen Forum was offering fifteen courses every term.

Perpetuating Itself Realizing that some more formal organization was needed if The Evergreen Forum were to continue, the Steering Committee set out to develop a plan. At the annual meeting in 2013, Elaine Jacoby and her committee presented a completed “Rules of Governance”— a new

organizational structure — providing for an elected Steering Committee and officers, as well as committees to oversee curriculum, evaluation of courses, and recruitment of volunteers.

The Evergreen Forum was becoming an institution.

Still Growing By 2016, PSRC had designated a staff coordinator to help run The Evergreen Forum.

The Evergreen Forum had to rent classroom space from the Presbyterian Church of Lawrenceville to accommodate twenty-five or more classes each term.

Looking Forward To continue to provide classes during the 2020–2021 pandemic, PSRC’s technology staff and volunteers stepped up to facilitate classes conducted online. Chief Executive Officer, Drew Dyson, announced (January 2021) that PSRC had purchased a building at 101 Poor Farm Road, which will be remodeled to include three dedicated, fully equipped classrooms for the use of Evergreen classes. There is lots of parking space.

In its first twenty years, The Evergreen Forum has offered courses in science, literature, history, art, law, politics, philosophy, music, and popular culture. So The Evergreen Forum, which began in a small meeting in a Princeton living room, is taking its place as an important part of the fabric of the larger Princeton community. We look forward to the next twenty years.

Every day when we turn on the news, we are hit with the reality that the world is fighting two pandemics — Covid-19 and racism. We watched as professional players demanded change as they strike for the lives lost and the freedoms that should be afforded to all. We gathered around our televisions as generations of people marched on the streets and chanted together as they work tirelessly to stamp out hate and uplift love. I knew that this moment in history would be the right time to open up the conversation. Instead of shying away from such an important part of history, PSRC decided it was the perfect moment to begin the conversation. In August 2020 we kicked off a summer of “conversations about race.”

Rachel Apter and Aarin Williams from the New Jersey Civil Rights office discussed a multitude of terms: systemic and systematic racism, unconscious bias, and racism in general, while offering visual aids to drive the points home. We were also joined

by Jaime Brown, Obella Obbo,

and Isaiah Coleman, a group of millennials who sat down with us to further the conversation later that month. The discussion centered around personal stories highlighting their Black experience — from what activism means to them, taking care of their mental health, and trying to find peace in a time of civil unrest.

A few months later we decided to continue to do the work centering around the church and blackness where we were joined by Kermit Moss, Sushama Austin-Connor and Kamaria Byrd-Williams who shared their personal stories of growing up in faith and how that shaped their identity and where they saw the future of activism going.

What I learned from this programming is that the conversation doesn’t stop here, and the work must continue and we at PSRC will keep talking about the stories that are shaping the future and how we can play a part.

“Celebrating PSRC ’s increasing welcoming inclusiveness of LGBTQ+ and other minorities in its publications, its programs, & its leadership” —Sylvia Stengle, former PSRC Board Member and Jocelyn and Carl Helm Legacy Society donor In the early days of the pandemic, our participants knew they were particularly at risk from Covid-19, and so our inperson meetings were no longer an attractive option. Fortunately, technology came to the rescue with online meeting capabilities.

Although there was a learning curve on both the administrative and audience ends, we were all soon proficient in Zoom and enjoying a booming rate of participation in our newly virtual sessions.

We began with a summer “spotlight” scholar series, featuring eight academics from a variety of fields, speaking to our members from all over the country. The success of this program led us to continue with monthly themed programs,

ranging from visits to museums and historic homes to an Emerald Odyssey that featured four Irish tourist attractions during the week of St. Patrick’s Day. PSRC also used Zoom as a platform to promote and expand our commitment to social justice with discussions of race, sexuality, and the effect of climate change on senior living. Programming in the works includes a twentieth anniversary 9/11 memorial and a Native American history month in November.

Our audience has broad and sometimes unexpected interests.

Our most popular event by attendance was a visit to the Charles M. Schulz Museum in California, a reminder that in addition to grappling with the thorniest issues of the day, our

participants also appreciate the very American humor and nostalgia of Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and the rest of the Peanuts gang.

With the imminent completion of our new building, and the abatement of the pandemic, we plan to continue to expand our lifelong learning programs in person in our new quarters.

The new location will have technology that will allow us to present hybrid programs available both in-person and virtually. The pandemic has only emphasized how vital a role these programs play in keeping our community connected and engaged.

LAUNCHING NEW SERVICES The Vaccine Navigator program illustrates our commitment to help older adults thrive. In response to overwhelming frustration with the vaccine rollout, PSRC quickly sprang into action, deploying staff and resources to launch the Vaccine Navigators.

Within three weeks, we recruited, screened, trained, and deployed over 118 volunteer navigators to assist with these efforts. Through this program, we worked with nearly 700 older adults in an effort to secure vaccine appointments and give a shot of hope to our community.

Carla Servin served as the vaccine navigator coordinator and spent countless hours on the phone and internet with staff, volunteers, and participants in the program. Sharon Hurley coordinated the recruitment and training of the volunteers. Together with other staff and municipal partners from the Princeton Health Department, this team led the extraordinary effort to serve the community and respond to this urgent need.
