SUMMER 2018 DISCOVER YOUR TALENTS

Summer Programs

Welcome! This summer, join us for fun, academics, and adventure! We are happy to announce the use of our new STEAM Center (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics). The new center, an expansion of the current facilities covering more than 2,000 square feet of space, includes a large classroom area and an adjacent computer lab. Campers in grades 4–7 are welcome to sign up for Introduction to STEAM, a week-long exploration of project-based learning and engineering, taught by PDS science teachers Aaron Schomburg and Carlos Cara. Stacey Walker, Lower School Math Specialist, has once again created a 2-week math curriculum course for 5th and 6th graders, expanding on the concepts practiced in the math courses for grades 1 & 2 and 3 & 4. Also, The Magic Tree House book series is back with new adventures of Jack and Annie geared toward 1st and 2nd graders. The Merlin Mission series provides an opportunity for eager 3rd and 4th graders to continue their fantastical adventures with Jack and Annie through more challenging texts. We have expanded our CIT (Counselor-in-Training) to include a summer of LIT (Leader-inTraining). LITs should be entering grade 9, CITs will be entering grade 10. Once students have completed our CIT training, they will be eligible to apply to be a counselor with the completion of grade 10. Summer Dance Camp, Irish Step Dancing, Creation Studio, and Design Thinking are more of our new programs offered this summer. Please check our website, www.pds.org/summer-programs, for the most up-to-date camp information. Once you have your choices ready, go to our website, and click on “Register Now”.

Join Us for an OPEN HOUSE: February 11, 2018 from 2:00 –4:00 p.m. at the Lisa McGraw ’44 Skating Rink at Princeton Day School If you are unable to attend the Open House, contact us for a private tour! SUMMER 2018 PROGRAMS

New Programs DESIGN THINKING Learn problem-solving skills by using the tools of design thinking and storytelling. Students will work in collaborative groups to arrive at innovative solutions to problems in the world around them, beginning with designing a better backpack. Campers will use inquiry and design-thinking to approach problems of increasing complexity. Using project-based learning and working in groups, students will strengthen their skills of creativity, critical-thinking, communication and collaboration— also known as 21st Century skills. Grades 5–7, taught by PDS Humanities Teacher, Tara Quigley.

This camp will help students avoid the dreaded summer slide that often occurs during long breaks by reviewing and solidifying concepts and skills that have been taught in earlier grades. At the same time, camp sessions will focus on the benefits of having a growth mindset and develop ways of thinking and learning math using that approach. Students will work through select problems from Jo Boaler’s website, Youcubed.org that engage number sense, modeling, and exploring patterns and space. Then, they will have opportunities to share ideas with others and discuss different approaches to problem solving. They will also partner up to play dice and card games that reinforce skills while having fun. Grades 5–6.

SUMMER CAMP DANCE Whether you are a dancer, a performer, an athlete, or just want to try something new, this class will teach you some new moves, and more importantly, how to move. Exploring techniques of modern and contemporary dance, improvisation, floor work, choreography, and anatomy, this class will improve coordination, strength and flexibility in a fun, collaborative and creative space. Come with curiosity, and the rest will follow! This class is appropriate for dancers and those who are looking to expand their movement and expressive possibilities. Grades 2–5. INTRO TO STEAM Have you thought about entering the world of STEAM or becoming an engineer? Join us as we explore the world of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) in our new upper school STEAM Lab. Through project-based learning, develop your ability to problem solve, collaborate, and effectively use the engineering design process. Taught by Carlos Cara, PDS Upper School Science and Steaminar teacher and Aaron Schomburg, PDS Lower School Science and Steam teacher. Grades 4–7. MATH GRADES 5+6 Spend two weeks of summer developing mathematical skills using a growth mindset approach to learning math! Growth mindset is an exciting concept developed by Carol Dweck that has been promoted and taught by Stanford’s Jo Boaler. Boaler has a website dedicated to it called Youcubed.org. Students with growth mindset: • Believe that talents and abilities can be developed over time, not that either they have it or they don’t • Are resilient and persevere through challenging problems • View mistakes as learning opportunities • Think about how they learn • Believe that effort, not talent, creates success

CREATION STUDIO Create wearable art with natural or synthetic fiber. Learn about where and how fiber is created. Design and create your own wearables such as a hat, scarf, cowl, vest, or create your own object! Grades 5–9. IRISH STEP DANCING The phenomenon of Riverdance placed Irish dance in the world spotlight. This course is a week-long introduction to traditional Irish dance and culture. Students will learn the basic steps involved in dances such as the jig and reel, culminating in a short-choreographed dance. Students will also explore Irish culture in art, folktales, and language. Students should come dressed comfortably. Ballet slippers or ghillies are recommended but not required. Maximum 12, Grades 3–6.

PDS BASKETBALL

LANGUAGE ARTS – MAGIC TREE HOUSE SERIES

Join us for an enriching week of skills, clinics, and competition in a learning environment that benefits from low player-to-coach ratios. The Princeton Day School Basketball Camp is designed to teach young players who are learning and improving the basic skills and concepts of the game. Shooting, ball handling, and passing will all be points of emphasis. Our instructors have many years of camp and team coaching experience. Camps begin at 12:15 p.m.–3:15 p.m. Each camper receives a Princeton Day School Basketball Camp t-shirt. Grades 5–8.

Come along with Jack and Annie as they continue their adventure with new books for Grades 1–2; Night of the Ninjas, Afternoon on the Amazon, Sunset of the Sabretooths and Midnight on the Moon. For the more experienced readers in Grades 3–4, Jack and Annie will begin the Merlin Missions series with Night of the New Magicians, Dark Day in the Deep Sea, Eve of the Emperor Penguin and Moonlight on the Magic Flute.

THE LIT OR LEADER-IN-TRAINING PROGRAM Lateral thinking… is the process of using information to bring about creativity and insight restructuring. With that quote in mind we have restructured our CIT program to better prepare our candidates for jobs as counselors. Students entering Grade 9 in the fall will now begin with our LIT, Leader-in-Training program. The Leader-in-Training program is an opportunity for former campers entering Grade 9 to participate in leadership workshops. The LITs will explore leadership style, develop skills for leading groups, communication, decision making, conflict resolution and increase their capacity to lead at camp and at home. LITs learn the power of role modeling and the importance of encouraging a positive environment. This 1-week program is a wonderful first step in seeking employment as a counselor at our camp in future summers. THE CIT OR COUNSELOR-IN-TRAINING PROGRAM DEVELOPS LEADERS
Campers entering Grade 10 in the Fall will qualify for spots in our Counselor in Training (CIT) program. This two-week long session will keep them engaged and learning important skills for both succeeding in camp as a counselor and succeeding in today’s job market. Training topics include customer service, appropriate use of social media, behavior management, diversity, and resilience building, and interviewing skills. CITs will have instruction in the morning and shadow groups and activities in the afternoons. This 2-week experience guides students entering Grade 10 through the transition into becoming future camp counselors. Our CITs play a significant role in leading our camper community, and we teach them the best practices of successful camp counselors. As a thank you, we will take them on a trip during the second week of the session.

MATH GRADES 1 + 2 AND 3 + 4 Once again, we will use Growth mindset developed by Carol Dweck showing the benefits of thinking and learning math using this approach. SUMMER COLLEGE ESSAY SEMINAR PDS teachers, Karen Latham, Jamie McCulloch, and Tom Quigley are again combining their talents and teaching experience to instruct a summer college essay seminar. Karen, Jamie, and Q. have more than twenty years experience teaching the college essay and have been part of the English department at PDS for a combined thirty–four years. The college essay seminar will guide students through the process of choosing a topic, drafting, revising, editing and polishing at least two personal narratives. By reviewing and analyzing a range of past college application essays and essay questions, by cultivating elements of voice and style, and by discovering what is likely to work and what isn’t, students will be prepared to approach other essays and supplemental applications with knowledge and confidence. We look forward to working together to help make the college essay process interesting, informative, and fun. 2-week program, Grade 12. LEARN TO SKATE USA – BASIC, FREESTYLE Princeton Day School Summer Programs has teamed up with Learn to Skate USA to offer skill levels 1–8. Six progressive levels introduce forward and backward skating, stops, edges, crossovers, and turns. Upon completion of the Basic Skills 1–6 levels, skaters will be able to confidently advance to more specialized areas of skating. All classes will be well-structured with the focus on proper skill development taught in a positive, fun, and social environment. Skaters will progress at their own rate and advance after skill mastery is demonstrated. Basic 1–2: These introductory levels allow new skaters with no prior skating experience to build confidence while learning the fundamentals. Basic 3–6: These levels develop all of the fundamental skating skills on the ice. Focus is on learning the ABCs of basic athleticism: agility, balance, coordination and speed. Level 7–8 will allow Freestyle level skaters to advance their skills. Skaters will be evaluated and placed in the appropriate level on the first day of class. Half-day sessions, Grades 3–12.
