On behalf of the 1vyG planning team and the Princeton FLI community, we are delighted and honored to welcome you to the 5th annual 1vyG conference.

The 2019 conference theme is: From Moment to Movement: Capitalizing on Our FLI Experiences to Become Agents of Change in Our Communities. This weekend we will be exploring our unique FLI identities together, in a series of workshops, panels, and discussions that will take us through the three communities where our FLI identity is challenged the most: our campuses, hometowns, and professional spaces.

In addition to the programming, we hope you get the chance to embrace the special space and comradery that comes with being in such a FLI-concentrated space as 1vyG. You are in a space of shared struggle, comprised of students from all parts of the country and from differents walks of life.

We would like to thank each of you for attending our conference and bringing your experiences to our gathering.

meet the team KARINA AGUILAR GUERRERO ‘20 LOGISTICS CHAIR Karina was born in Mexico but grew up in Pomona, California.

A current junior at Princeton University, she plans on studying Portuguese and History and getting certificates in Teacher Prep and Latin American Studies. She is passionate about human rights, immigration reform, and access to education. On campus, she is a codirector of Dream Team, treasurer for Worship House, and an advising fellow for SIFP.

KIKI GILBERT ‘21 CONTENT CHAIR KiKi is a sophomore at Princeton University. She’s on the trustee board for America’s Promise Alliance — the largest cross-sector non-profit in the country — where she serves as youth representative on issues impacting education accessibility. On campus, she co-chairs the annual conference for SPEAR, is the co-President of FLiC, and is the President and Founder of eXcel. Academically, KiKi is interested in the intersection between African-American history and philosophy; she doesn’t believe that one needs to have read Plato in order to envision and question the justness of a society.

JAYLIN LUGARDO ‘20 ADMINISTRATIVE PLANNING CHAIR Jaylin Lugardo is a junior at Princeton University, studying Classics with certificates in Humanistic Studies and Hellenic Studies. She is a proud Boricua hailing from Newark, NJ, and is passionate about college access and mental health awareness, especially surrounding the Latinx communities. She is a co-director of the Princeton Dream Team, the pro-immigrants rights organization on campus, and serves as a board member of the Latin American Legal Defense and Education Fund. She is also a Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellow.

ANNA MACKNICK ‘21 COMMUNICATIONS CHAIR Anna Macknick is a sophomore from Sheboygan, WI studying Linguistics with certificates in Translation and Intercultural Communication, and Cognitive Science. A QuestBridge Scholar and co-president of the First-Generation Low Income Council, they are passionate about advocating for accessibility in higher education. On campus, Anna works with the LGBT Center as a Peer Educator and as the publicity chair of the Pride Alliance. Anna also advises low-income high school students with Matriculate, and is a graphic designer for the Princeton Student Design Agency.

saturday panels Guilt: Soaring Past the Hidden Inhibitor of FLI Success In this panel we hope to explore the seemingly hidden components of the FLI identity, especially the relationship between FLI students and their families once they arrive on campus – what does it look like to be independent of, interdependent, or completely dependent upon those left behind? What does having access to certain resources, ie. being a part of the “privileged poor”, mean in regards to the lived experiences of FLI students on elite campuses?

• Linda Banks-Santilli is the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and a Clinical Associate Professor at Boston University.

• Dr. Rebecca Covarrubias is an Assistant Professor of Psychology and Faculty Director of the Student Success Evaluation and Research Center at the UCSC. • Anthony Abraham Jack is a Assistant Professor of Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Untraditionally FLI?: Defying the Career “Norms” for FLI Students This panel, suggested by FLI students who agreed they were collectively worried about deviating from career paths conventionally deemed lucrative (namely law, medicine, and engineering), will explore career paths that

FLI students may feel are inaccessible for them. What does it mean to be the first in one’s family to pursue a career that hadn’t seemed like an option before?

• Andy Chen studied sociology at Princeton University. He is a contributor to Design Observer, Design Taxi, and Open Manifesto, and a cofounder of Isometric Studio.

• An architect and public artist, Waqas Jawaid studied at Princeton, and received a Masters in Architecture from Harvard. He is a cofounder of Isometric Studio.

• Yessica Martinez is a poet and educator originally from Colombia. After Princeton, she has worked as a literature promoter, teaching artist and writer in residence.

• Cindy Rentala is a FinTech payments professional at Visa, responsible for enabling global sales to commercialize Visa Direct.

FLI on the Wall: Engaging with Recent (& Soon-to-Be) FLI Alumni In this panel we hope to uplift the voices of FLI alums who sustained their respective communities during their time in University. For this panel, we’ve asked participants to speak on some of their proudest accomplishments, especially the accomplishments that aren’t usually uplifted in spaces of elite higher-education, their strategies for organizing, and the most pressing concerns that need to be addressed on college campuses.

• Anea Moore, a Rhodes scholar and former 1vyG co-chair, is a senior at the University of Pennsylvania, majoring in Sociology and Urban-Studies.

• My Bui is from Saint Paul, MN and studied Politics at Princeton. She is interested in education policy and supporting under-served youth.

• Jordan Thomas, a Princeton grad and Rhodes scholar, is interested in public policy’s impact on opportunities for disadvantaged populations.

saturday workshops Knowledge is Power: Learning, Connecting and Sharing with FLI Students Navigating the landscape of information available for first-generation and low-income college students can be overwhelming and time-consuming because no one has put it all in one place – until now. This workshop will be exploring and demystifying online resources that bring together FLI news, books, documentaries and other resources, making it easy for students to stay informed.

We’ll be parsing through links to social media accounts of prominent FLI student groups at colleges across the U.S. to make it simple for students to find others just like them, as well as looking at the kinds of services other colleges offer their students, so FLI advocates can see how their colleges’ programs and services compare to those of similar schools.

• Kris Harvey is the Founder and Executive Director of FirstGenerationCollegeStudents.org.

What is Mentorship?: Optimizing Your Mentee/Mentor Relationship What is mentorship? How do you find a mentor? How can you build a productive and sustainable relationship with your mentor? During this workshop, learn the phases of mentorship as well as best practices for building the groundwork for a successful mentee/mentor relationship.

• Keisha is the Senior Director of Career and Alumni Services at Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America (LEDA).

• Kathy is a Career Counselor for the Career and Alumni Services at Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America (LEDA).

Insights on Navigating Wall Street & Corporate America In this workshop, we’ll take a close look at some of the social and cultural norms of corporate America and Wall Street. With the help of two senior professionals – Sash Rentala and Cindy Rentala – we’ll dive into questions like: how should FLI students approach the corporate recruiting process? What role does networking play in the job search, and to what degree does it ‘make or break’ one’s employment prospects? How can FLI students leverage and articulate their narrative to become both a comfortable and differentiating conversation? Ultimately, we’ll shed light on what seems to many FLI students a world very different from their own.

• Sash Rentala is a Managing Director at Moelis & Company, with over 17 years of investment banking experience.

• Cindy Rentala is a FinTech payments professional at Visa, responsible for enabling global sales to commercialize Visa Direct.
