Summary Texts in paper as a historical mirror of the local identity – an example form the German press in Łódź The chapter describes the influence of the first German paper in Łódź, the “Lodzer Zeitung”, on the local society and its unique service towards the multi ethnical population of Łódź in the 19th century. Historical issues of a paper reflect the reality of that time as well as a mirror. The paper reveals distinguishing marks of the cultural, religious and lingual diversity of the citizens. Between 1830 and 1860 more than 500 000 newcomers moved to Łódź, the new promised land, from Germany, Russia, Bohemia, the Netherlands, among them Catholics, Protestants and Jews, bringing not only the needed industrial know-how but also their heritage, religion and language. Many aspects of the city’s identity, that was created in the remarkable ethnical melting pot of Łódź, can still be witnessed in the archives within the texts of the “Lodzer Zeitung”.
