INFO

EDITOR’S NOTE Dear Reader, Season’s Greetings and welcome to April’s issue of Prime Time Dar. Most of us are familiar with the expression of “variety is the spice of life”. Like many other countries in the world, Tanzania’s proximity to the equator makes it harder for us to experience the variation that the four seasons (would) bring.

MATERNITY WARDS’ FUND-RAISER A fund-raising dinner organized by the African Youth Cross in Dar es Salaam collected over 24 million TZS in the month of March. The funds are for the purchase of hospital equipment, maternity wards and basic materials needed to improve healthcare for mothers and children. Mr. Mattson Chizi, chairman of African Youth Cross said, “the goal of the campaign is to support the availability of beds, mattresses, sheets and other materials needed at various hospitals for pregnant women and children.” According to recent statistics, in the period of 2005 to 2010, the deaths of children below five years of age, has gone down from 112 to 81 in every 1,000 children.

ELEPHANTS INVADE SERENGETI VILLAGES Herds of elephants invading dozens of rural villages in Serengeti District are reportedly increasing at an alarming rate with Serengeti District Council calling for help from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism. The Acting Chairman of Serengeti District Council, Mr Jumanne Kwiro, said the stray elephants have plunged many families into hunger after causing massive destruction on crop farms in the villages. He cited lack of vehicles and critical shortage of game officers faced by the council as the major obstacles impeding them from chasing the stray elephants away. The jumbos are usually seen in small groups originating from Ikorogo/ Grumeti Games Reserves and the Serengeti National Park. It is estimated that more than 75 per cent of the Serengeti District land is occupied by game protected areas including the world famous park.

FEDERAL COURT DECLARES FRSC’S NEW PLATE NUMBER UNCONSTITUTIONAL IN NIGERIA A Federal High Court in Lagos declared the decision by the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) to impose the new number plates on motorists as unconstitutional. The presiding judge of the court, Justice James Tsoho, held that it was unlawful for the respondent to impose the new number plates on motorists, where there was no existing law permitting the same. Justice Tsoho submitted that the issue of redesigning new number plates by the commission was not covered under the provisions of any law in. He urged the court to declare as unlawful, the threat by the respondent, to arrest motorists using the old plate numbers, because there is no law validly made in accordance with the constitution, prohibiting its user.

FIRST EVER MEERKAT RISES FROM SOUTH AFRICA The first of the 64 antennas of the MeerKAT telescope, the largest and most sensitive radio telescope in the southern hemisphere has been completed in South Africa. Standing 19.5m tall and weighing 42 tons, the new MeerKAT antenna towers above the antennas of the nearby KAT-7 instrument. MeerKAT is Afrikaans, meaning “more KAT”, but is also the name of an endearing little mongoose-like mammal that is indigenous to the Northern Cape and other Southern African regions. The 63 others are still under construction- with the foundation already laid. Almost 5000 cubic metres of concrete and more than 570 tons of steel were used to construct the foundations over the last nine months. Programme manager Glen Collins told SAnews that once all 64 antennas are operational, in 2017, the instrument ray will be so sensitive that it could pick up a cellphone signal from Saturn, making it better than all of the mobile networks in South Africa combined.

KENYA SETS NEW RULES FOR BODA BODAS AND TAXIS IN GARISSA The government has ordered all taxi and boda boda operators in Garissa, Kenya to clearly mark their vehicles. County commissioner Rashid Khator said this will make it easy for security agents to know where and which routes the vehicles operate in. Khator said boda boda operators should wear uniforms and their routes clearly defined. “We have realized that these boda boda operators are being used to commit crimes. Tracking them is difficult as we do not know where they come from and their routes,” he said. Khator said residents should support them in fighting crime. The operators have said the police will use the new directive to extort money from them and drive them out of business. Police have been cracking down on people without ID cards in the town since last week.

WORLD NEWS

AU-EU SUMMIT HANGING IN THE BALANCE The European Union (EU) and Africa Union (AU) Summit, which is set for Brussels in April, is hanging in the balance as the diplomatic rift between the two groups continues to widen. The African Union’s Peace and Security Council has advised the bloc not to attend the summit set for Brussels in April to protest the way Europe is allegedly holding the continent in “contempt by determining who is eligible to attend the meeting.” African nations have expressed serious concern over the non-invitation of Sudan, Eritria and the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic and the EU’s refusal to grant a visa to Zimbabwe’s first lady Grace Mugabe, who is on the EU sanctions list. The African Union is also bitter that an invitation was extended to Egypt which is suspended by the continental bloc after an alleged military coup ended the reign of elected President Mohammed Morsi.

INDIAN POLITICAL PARTY POLLS DUE WITH STRANGE NAMES In April, India’s 814 million eligible voters are due at the polls. There are more than 1,600 registered political parties - some with unusual names. For instance the Indian Lovers Party, launched on Valentine’s Day 2008 which resolves to fight for star-crossed lovers from different castes and religious backgrounds, whose parents don’t approve of their relationship. The Religion of Man Revolving Political Party of India (an odd translation from a local dialect). Other parties with odd names, at least in English translation, include the Poor Man’s Party and the Yours-Mine Party. The Indian Oceanic Party, The Pyramid Party of India, the Stay Awake Party, a recent addition to the Election Commission’s list of registered parties.

SAHARAN DUST, EUROPEAN POLLUTION BLANKETS BRITAIN IN SMOG British authorities have warned people with heart or lung conditions to avoid exertion as a combination of industrial pollution and Saharan dust blankets the country in smog. The environment department said air pollution level could reach the top rung on its 10-point scale. The department said the smog was caused by pollution from Britain and the continent staying in place because of light winds, along with dust blown up from the Sahara on a southerly breeze. Many motorists awoke to find cars covered in a film of red dust. Paul Cosford of Public Health England told the BBC that people with heart or respiratory problems should “reduce the amount of strenuous exercise outdoors.”

The RAHA Ladies

Reena, Aashiq, Nyangu and Akash

At a press conference earlier this month at their new headquarters Mr. Aashiq Shariff, CEO of Raha said, “this change in consumer behavior requires a new way of looking at the world and engaging with its parts, so in recognition of this we have challenged ourselves to evolve our brand. This is neither a rebrand nor an attempt to remain relevant but to be at the forefront in defining the trends that plenty will surely end up following. We want RAHA to be a mirror of the Tanzanian era of digital content and resonate on a global scale. We are proud to showcase our new brand featuring bold, flat illustration reminiscent of modern web design. To try and counter the premise that

technology deteriorates human experiences- we have decided to showcase in these illustrations the opposite. We highlight the moments where technology serves as a catalyst to enabling human contact and productivity, moments where connectivity serves as a bridging force rather than a dividing one. Additionally, recognizing the mobile nature of the modern user, our new website (www.raha.com) is entirely responsive – working on mobile, tablet, laptop and desktop.” Mr. Shariff also added, “beyond the superficial, we have stayed true to our commitment to offering Tanzania the highest quality internet and connectivity solutions available. Once again, we lead the way in ensuring we

are on the cutting-edge in the services we provide. RAHA would proudly like to also mark the milestone of having laid down an underground fiber network across the entire Central Business District (CBD) of Dar-es-Salaam and quickly expanding across the rest of the city and beyond. This service will provide unparalleled speeds and reliability to all of its users. Catered to consumers whose business and individual productivity relies on maximum efficiency. We are so confident about this unrivalled solution that we are offering a 110% money-back guarantee. We will continue to push the envelope and challenge ourselves in being current, cool and state-of-the art. It is our obsession to provide our clients with best possible solutions and user experience.”

Today “Lady in Red” waste any time in learning the has evolved into a platform for

We give them awards and certificates to encourage them and also as a token of appreciation. PT: When did you start the fashion shows and beauty pageants? AK: In 1986 my husband got relocated to MWANZA. There I met Mama Kombe ( English: Mother Trophy), a lady from abroad who was about to host a fashion show and she asked me to make 15 dresses. A month later, I hosted my own fashion show with 28 dresses. I didn’t

even know what to call the collection; I just called it “The Grand Fashion Show”. It was an immense success, I sold the clothes and I said to myself this is definitely my cup of tea! Every three months I started to organize fashion shows and then customers started calling me from Arusha, Dar and other cities. Proposals came in from Hotels for my shows. I was hosting them so often that I wanted to offer the audience more than just models and new designs. Ever since, I have hosted and participated in more than 100 fashion shows in Tanzania and many more abroad in Kenya, Uganda and USA. I got a live band, DJ and traditional dancers. My fashion shows are the full entertainment package! In one evening we have more than 500 guests. Nowadays I just host two shows per year, but I get invited to a lot of others like Swahili Fashion Week and Red Ribbon to name a few. As for the beauty pageants, In 1988 I was still in Mwanza, home of Lake Victoria, I held the first ever beauty

V for David Vee Australian filmmaker, author and musician David Vee (53) has been a resident of Dar since June 2013 with his wife and eight year old daughter. He left Australia 12 years ago to live abroad.

L

iving in Pakistan lead him to write his book “A Pakistani House Husband (the Beauty & the Chaos)” and his years in Iran inspired him to make a Guerrilla Style documentary, Pulp Farsi which will be screened at Alliance Française on Thursday, 17th April 2014 at 6:30 pm.

PT: You’ve been living in Dar since June last year, how do you find it? DV: Dar is good, complicated at times, but complicated is good. The rhythm does take some getting used to, however, having lived as an expat in Pakistan,

Thailand and Iran previously, does prepare you for the dayto-day nuances of Dar and WOW! There are so many intriguing stories to be filmed.

PT: Tell us about your current Tanzanian projects DV: I have my own company in Dar, Veescape Films and we have a few projects going at the moment. I’ve been filming a new local band “Hoko Roro” at Sauti za Busara and will be directing their first video clip in May. Also I have recently completed a short film about Makini which is a street-kids’ theatre group from Dar, who through artistic activities and workshops help underprivileged youth regain their self-esteem and stability. Another project that I’ve worked on is called Tamaduni za Kusini

(Southern Cultures) which is about the 5th MaKuYa Festival of Traditional and Performing Arts, held in Mtwara. Each year traditional dance troupes from the MAKONDE, MAKUA and YAO tribes of Mtwara come together from 15 different villages, to present their dance, music, storytelling and alternative perceptions of life in this dynamic festival. Moreover, I’m busy with my producer, Bruno Lopes raising funds for a behindthe-scenes feature documentary about Southern Cultures and the Mtwara region.

PT: How long have you been making films and have you ever had any formal training? DV: Time flies - it has been around seven years! It was in 2007 that I decided to promote my nonfiction book “A Pakistani House Husband (the Beauty & the Chaos)” by making a short film. The film ended up being selected for the Dungog Film Festival in Australia and I have switched career paths ever since. As for formal training – back in the day I started a diploma in filmmaking in Australia, however I dropped out after three months. That said, my background in music

and literature does facilitate the filmmaking process. PT: Any favourite directors? DV: Werner Herzog, David Lynch and Quentin Tarantino have all left their mark on my psyche! My favourite documentary of all time would be “Favela Rising” the film takes a fascinating look at life in Brazil’s slums. PT: What is it that drives you to make films? DV: Since my teens I’ve regarded myself as an artist; in the broader sense of the term, a creator. I’m just not happy in my skin unless

I’m fabricating something. I suppose it all started back in 1978 when I formed my first band, a punk band called “The 4 Skins”. 20 years in the music business followed. After that I settled down a bit and turned to travel writing and now, for me, filmmaking is the most complete art-form. There is simply more room for creativity; with the visuals, the music and the narrative. Although I must admit that sometimes there’s just not enough time in the day, sometimes my family gets in the way! Shhhh my wife is in the next room. . . PT: Tell us about Pulp Farsi? DV: Pulp Farsi is not a documentary about politics or religion. It’s a film about the Persian psyche and my first feature length documentary in which I have portrayed the dichotomy in the Iranian society. I lived there with my family for almost 3 years, filming and

interviewing people from all walks of life. As a foreigner in Iran, meeting people was easy and I found many willing souls keen to tell their story and show me their lives and many others who were not as keen, merely afraid of the repercussions from the government if they said something “out of line”. I had almost 100 hours of footage to edit and somehow I managed to wade through it! The thing that was most surprising was,

how much the Iranian lifestyle and attitude was similar to back home in Australia, but at the same time it was so very, very different. This was confusing and fascinating! Religion seemed to be everywhere yet nowhere! There are many restrictions and rules governing the people but behind closed doors those restrictions cease to exist! Iran is a very urban and sophisticated society nevertheless the populace has some catching-up

to do. If you ever get the chance to go . . . do it! His book has recently been made available online.

Pebble Steel If you’re going to get in on the smartwatch game, at least do it in style. The Steel casts aside the standard’s Lego-ish look and replaces it with something far more premium - even when you’re rocking a Super Mario watchface. It’s rich in features, has a tonne of great apps available, and means no more awkward fumbling in your jacket pocket the next time you get a text while you’re on the tube.

PS Vita TV Sony still hasn’t told us when the Vita TV will break out of Japan but we reckon it won’t be too long before the microconsole begins its Western voyage. And we can’t wait: between putting our Vita games on the TV, streaming from the PS4 and potentially dishing up a roster of TV streaming apps, the Vita TV is a must-have piece of kit for any PlayStationer’s living room. Watch your back, Chromecast.

2GB W Series MP3 Walkman The X-E2 is the mid-range model in Fujifilm’s X system of mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras, sitting between the relatively affordable X-M1 and X-A1 twins, and the unashamedly high-end X-Pro1 and X-T1. It’s an update of the X-E1, which we liked a lot for its combination of ‘old school’ handling and excellent image quality, giving it our Gold award in our review.

CAR REVIEW

Range Rover Sport 2014 Completely overhauled for 2014, the Range Rover Sport is lighter, more nimble and more comfortable than previous models. It is powered by a supercharged 3.0-liter V-6, mated to an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. Two all-wheel-drive systems are available–one, more equipped for the street, and the other, better suited for weekend offroaders. The V-6 delivers consistent power in nearly any situation, but sometimes leaves us wanton for a little more.

KAOLE RUINS Just 5kms south of Bagamoyo are the Kaole ruins; the remains of the oldest mosque in East Africa dating back to the 13th century, a second mosque from the 15th century, a mausoleum of 20 graves from the same era and a small Chinese museum with Chinese pottery. Among other things to see are the lovers’ grave and an ancient Baobab tree. Legend has it that the tree is around 5000 years old! East of the ruins is the old Harbour.

We left Dar around 4:45 am on a Saturday, to avoid the morning rush hour and arrived there just in time for a scrumptious breakfast - at one of the resorts on the beach, at sunrise. Don’t forget to take your swimming gear with you (to benefit from the high-tide). Bagamoyo has been recently recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here’s a list of the places we visited.

BAGAMOYO SLAVE FORT Built in 1860 as a private house, the fort is the town’s oldest stone structure and was used to detain slaves before they were sent off to Zanzibar. At the peak of the trade, 50,000 slaves were detained and shipped yearly from Bagamoyo.

World’s Ultimate Shopping Destinations To pinpoint which cities around the world deliver the most gratifying, enjoyable shopping experiences, cnn.com consulted global experts and rated cities in four areas, using a one-to-10 scoring scale for each category: 1. Getting around: Quality of public transportation, affordability and availability of cabs, transport time 2. Value: Bargain opportunities, such as sale seasons and average prices. 3. Variety: Number of available brands, range of shopping categories, quantity of upscale shops, department stores, boutique and vintage retailers and market stalls. 4. Experience: City beauty, quality of window displays and shop décor, friendliness and competence of clerks and service staff, dining and accommodation options.

In fact South Korea recorded more credit card transactions per person than any other country in 2011 and all merchants are required by law to accept credit cards no matter how low the price. Yes, that means the phrase “cash only, please” is technically illegal. This translates to a capital city bursting with shops of a dizzying array of types and sizes.

A miniature kingdom unto itself, the Dubai Mall is the world’s largest mall in total area, with theme parks, a waterfall, “dancing” fountains, Olympic-sized ice rink, aquarium, indoor souk and malls within the mall, such as the Galeries Lafayette from France and the first Bloomingdale’s outside the United States. If that isn’t enough cash registers, there’s also the Mall of the Emirates, with the first indoor ski resort in the Middle East.

One of the most beautiful (if expensive) shopping experiences can be found at Quadrilatero d’Oro (‘rectangle of gold’), which many fashion insiders consider is the world’s most important fashion district. The interwoven pedestrian streets are lined with Jewelers, boutiques and lifestyle showrooms that make for great window shopping. Milan fashions are always months ahead of the trends elsewhere.

WHAT IS BLISS? Even writing an entire book about bliss didn’t make it any easier to describe it. What is bliss? It’s a difficult question. That isn’t because bliss is vague, inchoate, or unreal, but rather because it surpasses the capacity of language. By Sean Meshorer
