Fair Times. Fair times are great times. Filled with so much fun, excitement, learning, and memory making that they are impossible to really quantify or stick into one category; they mean so much to so many and for so many reasons. They are a literal rite of passage to every summer season. Large and small, fairs mean a lot and do an untold amount for our industry as a whole. They can be easy to take for granted but we need them ALL. Fairs bring people together, families and friends. They bring important products and demonstrations to the people that need to see them, whether they knew it or not. They provide us with crazy ways to spend time and money (I mean who doesn’t need to see a great pig race at least once per year?) while building memories with the people we enjoy. From the tallest corn to the best apple pie to the county’s top show steer, fairs are great places to compare local ag products and talents. They are the building blocks for so many larger successes in life. Fairs are the best places to see the best kids in the best industry. They showcase what is happening now and what – or who - is just on the horizon. Nearly all of tomorrow’s agricultural leaders get their starts at county shows and nearly all of today’s big shots can recall their county fair days. Ask them and they’ll quickly relate details of 4-H glory as well as cringe-

worthy moments that continue to motivate them today. Those memories are the common thread. Good and bad, their fair memories drove them to accomplish more and to aid the next generation; that’s the way it’s supposed to work. I know I’ll never forget my county fair days and the lessons learned there. I know I may not have this career if I never won that steer show back in the day and then captured the momentum and confidence that that victory gave me. I always tried to remember that when I was asked to judge a show. Fair wins and losses mean a great deal to those involved, even when they seem too small to matter. County fair relationships and memories often last lifetimes; I’ll bet we can each name five marriages that started there. Sometimes the county fair drama is too much but often times it is the best part, especially when you look back on it. Relax, it’s important but it is still just the county fair. It will all be alright. So this summer be sure to get out and enjoy your county and state fairs, as many as you can. Take in all of the sights and shows. Get involved where you can and support the auctions as best as you can. Enjoy it all and always remember that young eyes are on you and they’re paying more attention than you think. Buy. Sell. Be Happy. Craig Reiter, Publisher
