Thistle Ridge Ranch 2021 Bull Sale

Page 1

Welcome...

Welcome to our 15th Annual Bull Sale!

On behalf of our family I would to welcome one and all to our 15th Annual Bull Sale. Although this past year was a challenge for most, personally I look back at it as a pretty darn good year. We had lots of well-timed moisture, equalling more grass than we’ve had for years. Hay crops were excellent. Lots of time to get things done around the farm. Healthy kids. Happy wife. Some hail, but meh, you can’t have it all.

I thought our calves looked as good in September as they had in years, but low and behold they actually weighed a little less this year than usual. I attribute that to the quick growth in the grass and it being a little more washy this year. Their response on feed has been excellent, and I think you’ll appreciate their condition come sale day. Don’t expect a lot of fat, we try to grow these bulls with longevity and fertility in mind. We don’t push our bulls hard till sale date and then stop. We grow them sustainably at a steady pace right up until the day you need them.

Our cows are all ran together. Reds, blacks, whites.Young and old. We don’t have the space to separate any groups off and feed them differently, so if they want to stick around they are going to have to do it on their own merit. I do think this hurts us in the short run, but it makes the cream rise to the top, and those cows that make it here will make it anywhere.

The sale will be at Perlich Auction Mart in Lethbridge again this year. We really enjoyed our time at the Taber Ag Plex and were always treated excellent by the staff there. However the facilities at Perlich are second to none and it just seemed like the right time for the move.

The bulls are being fed again at TFS Fincastle. We are extremely happy with the job they do for us there, and the extra effort they go to to make sure the bulls get what they need. The bulls will be available to view there right up until Wednesday, March 24th. Feel free to stop in anytime. As always we will have sight unseen purchasing available with our full guarantee of your satisfaction upon delivery. Feel free to call myself or any of our capable sale staff, and we will help you with your needs in any way we can. The bulls will be ran live through the ring for auction, as well as internet bidding will be available through DLMS and Perlich Bros own site.

We look forward to seeing you sale day.

A note on our calving ease score.

I’ve seen this used before in other catalogs and I really like the idea. Not only does it give you a really good view point on how the bull should calve, but it’s also another way to make us accountable. So here’s how I score them.

Recommended primarily for cows. If you only have a few heifers mixed in you can get away with it, but do expect to probably help a few.

Heifer bull. I would personally use these bulls on my heifers with no second thoughts.

These bulls have generations of calving ease bred in, and should calve any type of heifer with absolutely no assistance.

**Please note that a 3 Star Charolais bull is rated as used on Charolais heifers. I am still not comfortable recommending them on Angus heifers that I don’t know. **

The sire of Lot # 6 is a long spined power bull we bought off Sean Rogers to use for adding length and performance, and infusing some different bloodlines. The dam of 20H produced the 2019 “ Donation Heifer “ at the prestigious Canadian Red Round up. You could probably sneak him in to breed some heifers that you’re keeping an eye on.

Red Gene Carriers...

a quick explanation on how the red gene is passed on

If you breed a black red gene carrier to black cows with no red gene, you will get black calves. If some of your cows are black, but do have the red gene, then you have a 25% chance of getting a red calf. If you breed a black red gene carrier to red cows then you have a 50% chance of getting red calves. If you breed a red bull, with black in its pedigree to red cows, they will always be red calves. Red bred to red will always be red.

Understanding Ultrasound

In order to use body composition EPD’s or ultrasound data to its full potential, a breeder must have an understanding of ultrasound terminology. Several of the ultrasound measurements are comparable to the familiar carcass measurements. The data is simply collected on yearling bullsa and heifers instead of market ready steers. Take a step back from looking at the numbers and become comfortable with the terminology.

UlTRasoUnd caRcass MeasUReMenTs

RibFat/Backfat: An external fat measurement taken between the 12th and 13th rib reported in inches. Rib fat is the main trait that affects percent lean meat yield ie; A1, A2, A3 & A4. Percent lean meat yield is the calculation that estimates the percent of lean muscle on the carcass. For example, a lean meat yield of 60% on a 100lb carcass would have 600 lbs of lean muscle and 400 lbs of bone and fat.

Ribeye area (Rea): An area measurement of the loin or ribeye muscle. Reported in square inches. While an increase in backfat wil lower the percent lean meat yield an increase in REA will raise the percent lean meat yield.

Rump Fat: An external fat measurement taken from an image collected between the hooks and the pins of the animal.Reported in inches. The rump fat measurement, coupled with the rib fat measurement will increase the accuracy of percent lean meat yield. intramuscular Fat (%iMF)/Marbling: This measurement determines the amount of fat within the muscle. Reported in %. This measurement us used to determine the quality grade of the carcass
