On behalf of Jen-Ty Gelbviehs we would like to welcome you to our annual bull sale, held again at the Medicine Hat Feeding Company in Medicine Hat AB on March 1, 2022.
This past year has definitely been one of the most challenging years for pretty much all cattle producers on the Prairie Provinces. With very little to no moisture it has been very hard to find feed and if you found it the cost is so high you can’t afford it. So the sad part of that is many cows having to be sold this past fall because of the feed shortage. Also for many producers having to make changes on how and what they were going to feed their cattle for the winter. Very stressful to say the least. We find the cattle business has always been a next year program. Next year will be better. So that being said there is lots of positivity for the cattle industry for 2022 which will start with the bull sales.
This year we have brought to you a good strong set of red and black yearling bulls. Our program is driven by producing the best product we can that will work for any cattleman that sell quality pounds for a living. The diversity that these herd sire prospects will offer to any program is performance or calving ease depending on your needs. We focus on maternal traits with our cow herd that will produce performance, fertility, easy fleshing, docility and longevity.
We hand pail all the bulls about 12lbs of bull ration a day. As well they are on free choice of dry hay/grass bales. The bulls will be fully guaranteed, semen tested, DNA and homozygous polled testing done. Because we semen test so early and it is usually -20, there will be a few retest. We will bring them back home, retest and fully guaranty them.
We would like to thank all our valued customers and friends that have been such amazing supporters of our program for many years. Your support does not go unnoticed. We look forward to visiting with you all on sale day or any time before the sale. We welcome you to stop in at the farm, beforehand, to view the bull as well.
The bulls will be at Medicine Hat Feeding Company on Monday February 28th for viewing as well as Tuesday March 1st before the sale. If you have any questions regarding any of the bulls please do not hesitate to contact us, we will be happy to assist you. If you are unable to make the sale you can go on-line at WWW.mhfc.ca make sure to contact the auction beforehand. 1-800-453-3129 Office 1-403-526-3129 or Lyle Taylor 1-403-528-0797

Calving ease direct (CE): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd.
Birth weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf.
Weaning weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning.
Yearling weight (YW): Predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling.
Milk (Milk): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight.
Calving ease maternal (CEM): Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s first-calving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. This EPD is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts which animals produce daughters with a genetic pre-disposition to calve unassisted as heifers.
Stayability (ST): Predicts the genetic difference, in terms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six year of age. The stayability EPD is one of the best measures currently available to compare a bull’s ability to produce females with reproductive longevity.
Yield grade (YG): Differences in yield grade score, which is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio.
Carcass weight (CW): Differences in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint.
Ribeye area (REA): Differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable.
Marbling (MB): Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades.
Fat (FAT): Differences for fat thickness, in inches, for a carcass over the 12th rib, smaller numbers of fat thickness are preferable as excess fat can be detrimental to yield grade.
