AS ANOTHER year rolls around, the usual talk of new year’s resolutions gets a distinctly tradie twist. Sure, there’s always room for sharper business systems, tidier utes and be er time management — but let’s be honest: for most tradies, the real resolution between December and January is simple.
Work less. Rest more. Make the most of the holidays. No strings a ached.
And it’s well deserved. After a massive year on the tools, the summer break becomes sacred territory.
Long drives up the coast, camping trips, backyard bbqs, reversing down the je y ramp in one go — this is the season where the work boots get parked and the thongs take over. It’s also when many start
eyeing off upgrades for the year ahead, especially in one of Australia’s most competitive ba legrounds: the ute market.
That’s why this issue’s cover feature taps into one of the most talkedabout arrivals of the moment — the BYD SHARK 6. In a landscape packed with heavy hi ers, the SHARK 6 stands out with its tech-focused platform and groovy design.
As the broader industry shifts toward smarter drivetrains, lower running costs and more creature comforts, this newcomer signals where Australia’s favourite workhorse is heading.
And with plenty of tradies spending their holidays towing boats, hauling campers and clocking up kilometres,
there’s no be er time to size up what could be your next upgrade.
But beyond the shiny new metal, this issue celebrates the slower rhythm of the season. It’s a chance to reset before the chaos of the new year kicks back in.
Whether resolutions involve promoting supps on Insta (enter code HARRY26), be er gear, or just ge ing your sh*t together — the focus is

As 2026 approaches, this edition sets the tone for a year that blends smarter choices with well-earned downtime.
Here’s to enjoying the break, embracing the sunshine and heading into the new year recharged, rebalanced and ready for whatever the next job throws your way.

BARANGAROO WAS buzzing as sneakers squeaked, beats dropped, and the Red Bull Half Court National Final took over the waterfront in November.
Forget your local YMCA full of gym bros clanking backboard shots and calling “and-one!” on every drive — this was real streetball.
The best 3x3 hoopers from across Australia hit Sydney after grinding through qualifiers in fi ve states, and they weren’t here to mess around.
If you’ve ever tried a half-court shot that ended up more ‘halfway to the carpark’, you’d know this level hits different.

There were live tunes, street culture, and enough energy to power Barangaroo for a week.
It wasn’t just about buckets — it was about community, creativity, and showing that Aussie streetballers have serious game. High-fl ying, hard-fought, and full of fl air — the Red Bull Half Court National Final reminded everyone that while most of us are still working on our jump shots, these legends are already writing their next highlight reel.

On the women’s side, Team Fierce lived up to the name, going full thro le and taking the championship in style.
Both teams now get to rep Australia at the Red Bull Half Court World Final in Dubai — not a bad upgrade from the local outdoor courts with dodgy rims and

Opt
— and the BYD SHARK 6 — are changing the sustainability landscape for tradies and fleets
On most job sites, there’s a familiar soundtrack — the steady hum of generators, the buzz of light towers, and the occasional diesel cough that no one really notices anymore. That being said, with

new emissions reporting laws kicking in from June 2026, Aussie contractors will need to get serious about cutting their Scope 1 emissions while being under pressure to keep projects moving.
That’s where Opt Hire comes in.
The crew behind Opt Hire aren’t just hiring out gear — they’re helping tradies clean up their act, one generator and lighting tower at a time.
Instead of running diesel engines ‘round the clock, Opt Hire’s hybrid setups mix solar, battery and diesel power so the engine only fires up when it’s needed. The result? Less fuel burned, next to zero noise, and a huge drop in overall emissions.
On some jobs, switching to hybrid gear has cut fuel use

by more than a third — and that’s all while working more effectively.
For tradies, especially contractors, it’s not just about ticking the sustainability box — it’s about saving money, reducing maintenance, and keeping sites safer and quieter.
“Opt Hire is not a supplier or subcontractor, we are a partner. We see our clients success as our success,” Opt Hire National Sales Manager Mike Bujak said.
“Partnering with our clients allows us to support and collaborate on solutions designed for the clients need.”
Fewer refuelling runs and service calls mean less

downtime and fewer moving parts to manage.
The added bonus of V2L capability gives the site access to power anytime, anywhere the SHARK 6 Ute is.
Opt Hire’s gear has been running flat-out, with hybrid generators now used on everything from road upgrades to major infrastructure builds.
On one Melbourne job, two big hybrid units have been powering a site compound around the clock, and live data shows about 36 per cent fuel savings compared to old-school diesel setups.
That’s real proof that clean gear can still get the job done.
“Opt Hire is not simply a company providing sustainable or low emission assets, we are a sustainable and low emission company,” Mike said.
“We know what it means to be carbon conscious.”
Opt Hire’s approach is built around three pillars — Support, sustainability, and innovation — but the idea is simple: make greener tech easy to use and hard to ignore. Support means backing up their clients on-site and helping them get the most out of new systems.
Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword — it’s cemented into how Opt Hire builds and runs its fleet, and this resulted in the SHARK 6 Ute being selected as their first choice for fleet
Innovation is what keeps them pushing forward, whether that’s with hybrid generators, solar-charged batteries, or now, a cleaner ute lineup.
With construction emissions set to become a bigger
talking point in the years ahead, companies like Opt Hire are giving contractors a head start.
Using their gear doesn’t just lower fuel costs — it’ll also help reduce the numbers businesses will soon need to report once the new emission rules kick in.
“We’re all on the emission reporting journey, if you’re not looking at reduction pathways in day-to-day operations now, you are behind the eight-ball already,” Mike said.
“Opt can help, it’s what we do.”
It’s one thing to power job sites more sustainably — but what about getting around them?
Here’s where the BYD SHARK 6 offers as Australia’s first plug-in hybrid ute.
Australia’s ute market is notoriously competitive, but the SHARK 6 has already made waves by selling well over 15,000 utes in its first year Down Under, which includes Opt Hire, who added three SHARK 6s to its fleet.
“The BYD’s were an easy choice,” Mike said.
“A plug-in hybrid in our industry is the perfect choice, it blends reduced carbon and emissions with the ability to support our clients in real-time.”
The SHARK 6 Utes are already turning heads, blending diesel-free driving with next-level refinement with serious towing and off-road cred.
The SHARK 6 is a proper 4X4 body-on-framework ute. It runs a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine teamed up with
dual electric motors — one on each axle — pushing out 321kW of power and 650Nm of torque as well as a 0-100km/h time of just 5.7 seconds.
That’s plenty of grunt for towing and site work. It can run up to 80km purely on electric, perfect for aroundtown or site runs, and stretches out to more than 800km in hybrid mode when the engine kicks in.
For Opt Hire, that means the team can handle day-today work like site inspections and equipment delivery, you name it — the SHARK 6 helps save fuel and cut emissions.
“The range for us was a defining factor in our choice of plug-in hybrid vehicle of choice,” Mike said.
“We find our teams running smaller trips daily whilst charging overnight run days without fuel, however when we are busy and the hybrid system kicks in, there is very little difference from their diesel counterparts.”
When they need to travel longer distances, the hybrid setup keeps things running smoothly without range anxiety.
So far, the Opt Hire team is enjoying their SHARK 6s.
From behind the wheel, the SHARK 6 are quiet with no engine noise when they’re cruising on battery — which

makes a big difference when pulling into sites early or working around residential areas.
There’s no diesel clatter, no fumes, and plenty of instant torque when it’s time to get moving.
“The drivers feedback is always positive, from the drive comfort to the high-tech system, the Shark’s are an allround winner,” Mike said.
Inside, it’s more like a high-end SUV than a rugged 4x4 work ute.
There’s a massive 15.6-inch touchscreen, a 10.25-inch digital dash, wireless phone connectivity and charging.
The SHARK 6’s body-on-frame chassis with independent suspension all-round and DMO controls make it built for demanding road conditions

As well as dual-zone air-con, the SHARK 6’s electrically adjustable and ventilated seats make things extra cosy.
For a tradie or site supervisor who’s in and out of the cab all day, it’s a seriously comfortable workspace.
“Emissions aside, the BYD has the feel of a luxury sedan, with the power and space of a dual-cab utility,” Mike said.
“Its very impressive.”
Safety’s a big selling point too for fleets invested in safety and sustainability.
The BYD SHARK 6 carries a top score of five-star ANCAP safety rating, with all the latest driver-assist tech — autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and a 360-degree camera that makes reversing onto a trailer a breeze.
The SHARK 6 doesn’t shy away when it’s time to go off-road, either.
It’s built on a body-on-frame chassis with independent suspension all-round and Dual Mode Off-Road (DMO) controls that adjust for mud, sand or snow.
With a 2,500kg towing capacity, it’s got the strength to haul gear without guzzling fuel.
“For what we do at Opt Hire everyday, BYD SHARK’s are comparable to all other mainstream site vehicles,” Mike explained.
“Once you add reduced emissions, comfortable ride, noise reduction, and the ease of use, why would you look anywhere else?”
The real win here is how the Shark shows what’s
possible for the next generation of work vehicles.
For years, diesel’s been the default — but Opt Hire’s proving there’s a smarter, cleaner solution out there to get the same job done.
The SHARK 6 slot straight into day-to-day duties, pulling their weight without the pollution or the pump stops.
For contractors looking to shrink their carbon footprint (and stay ahead of those upcoming emission reports), using an Opt Hire fleet that includes the BYD SHARK 6 means less fuel burned, fewer tailpipe emissions, and a quieter site overall.
Opt Hire isn’t playing catch up, it’s already ahead of the pack. Between its hybrid power systems on-site and hybrid vehicles on the road, the company’s setting a new standard for what sustainable construction support looks like in Australia.
The tools and vehicles still do the heavy lifting — Opt Hire just strives to do it cleaner, smarter, and with a lot less noise.

IF YOU’RE a tradie looking for a switch up in 2026, Senix is one name that deserves a spot in your toolbox.
With performance that stacks up against the biggest brands in the game — and pricing that’ll leave more in your pocket — Senix is shaping up as the go-to choice for tradies who know value when they see it.
BUILT FOR THE TRADE, PRICED FOR REALITY
“Premium performance at excellent value,” That’s how Senix Tools Australia
Vice President Tim Paton described the brand — and it’s not just talk.
“Although Senix offers
a price that is excellent value, our tools spec right up to into heavy trade,” Tim added.
New to Australian shelves but a proven player overseas, Senix has spent years earning its stripes in the US and Europe, offering Power Tools and Outdoor Power Equipment (OPE) across its X2 18V, 2X2 36V, X6 60V, Petrol and Corded ranges. Now, the brand is bringing that experience — and its trade-grade build quality — Down Under.
Tim said Senix is ready to give Australian tradies a serious alternative to the usual big-name players.
“I think the Australian
market and consumers have always been very savvy in terms of being able to look at the brand, look at specs, look at the price, and weigh those three things up and make it a fairly considered decision when they make their purchase,” he said.
One tradie who’s been pu ing Senix to the test is Paul Swann, a carpenter from Melbourne’s east with more than 14 years on the tools. Working across bathroom renos, maintenance and warranty work, Paul’s had plenty of gear in his hands over the years — and he reckons Senix is right up
there with the best.
“Senix is ahead of the game in that aspect,” Paul said.
“They’re giving the tools to tradies to try them, give them a good run, and give Senix the feedback on what they need to improve to eventually come into the market with a great tool.”
After testing a few Senix drivers, saws and drills, Paul said the quality speaks for itself. “The Senix products I’ve used have been equal to, or in some cases, be er than the other brands,” he said.
Tim said that’s exactly what the brand set out to achieve.
“We wanted to make sure that tradies are ge ing a product that is fi t for purpose and will outperform some of the bigger boys in the market,” he said.
“Now we may not have the width of range of some of those brands, but we’ve always maintained our strong focus is on ensuring we have that core foundation of tools that every tradie needs, day in day out, with top-end specs at a great price.”
FAIR DINKUM PRICING It’s not just about performance — it’s about value. Despite going head-to-head with some of the most established names in the trade, Senix manages to keep costs in check. For tradies, that can mean saving hundreds without compromising on reliability. “For tradies, that’s something we really look at,” Paul said.
“You don’t want to go for the cheapest option on the market because it’s not going to hold up.
“But Senix is worth it, and sometimes it’s half the price of the other brands.
“If you can save money and get a be er tool, it’s almost a no-brainer isn’t it?”

IF THERE’S one thing tradies love, it’s when they can use their phone during work.
Sometimes it’s to scroll the group chat or send memes, but Fluke has come in with an epic new tool that changes how many tradies tackle thermal imaging.
This has long been the domain of high-end inspectors and specialists with expensive gear.
But that barrier is fast disappearing.
Thanks to Fluke’s iSee™ Mobile Thermal Camera range — the TC01A, TC01B, and the newly launched TC01C — everyday tradies now have professionalgrade thermal imaging

Real-time alarms alert users when temperatures breach set limits, while automatic capture and
Both the TC01A, and newly launched TC01C (pictured) use USB-C ports for Android phones and newer iPhones respectively
time-lapse modes allow for hands-free operation in una ended situations. The cameras also support emissivity adjustments for different materials and feature side-byside infrared and visible image comparison, ideal for pinpointing exact locations of issues during inspections.

and a one-metre drop rating. It’s built to survive the workshop, the job site, or wherever the day takes you.
With the introduction of the new TC01C for newer iPhones and iPads,
Fluke continues to make advanced tools more accessible than ever. For tradies, this means less downtime, faster fault detection, and smarter diagnostics — all through the convenience of a smartphone.
In short, Fluke’s iSee™
range proves that powerful thermal imaging doesn’t need to be bulky, complex or out of reach. It just needs to be in your pocket.

G’DAY TOOL enthusiasts, I’m Anthony Pi ella, Business Development Manager at Warren & Brown Tools.
After more than 20 years here, following over a decade in sales at Repco, I’ve seen firsthand how our industry, our tools, and our tradesmen have evolved.

Having spanners that are manoeuvrable in tight spaces is a must
Over the years, I’ve visited countless worksites, met thousands of tradesmen, and watched how the right tools can transform a job — not just making it easier, but safer, faster, and more precise.
At Warren & Brown Tools, we take pride in our Australian heritage.

Many of our products are still designed and manufactured right here in Melbourne, a legacy of innovation and precision. For items sourced overseas, we only work with trusted suppliers from Japan, Taiwan, the USA, and Europe — ensuring every WB tool lives up to the high standards Aussie tradies demand.
From my experience on site and in workshops across the country, certain tools consistently stand out for their
Here are my top fi ve WB Tools picks that every tradesman should have in their kit:
1. CHISEL IMPACT SCRAPER RANGE
A true workhorse. These scrapers are built for durability and precision, making short work of rust, gaskets, and sealants. Versatile and tough, they’re indispensable for tradesmen who value speed and accuracy. On a tight timeline or challenging site, a good scraper can save hours of labour, and the WB range is designed to stand up to heavy-duty use day in, day out.
Anthony Pi ella has been around the tools for more than 30 years — he knows quality when he sees it
2. RATCHETING GEAR SPANNER SET
A smooth, reliable spanner set is essential.
and effi ciency ma er. From my observations, tradies appreciate not just the durability but also the ease of use in confined spaces, which makes a tough job noticeably easier.
3. INDEXING PRY BARS
When it comes to leverage, these bars deliver. Available in three sizes, they’re flexible enough for tight spaces while providing the strength needed for heavy-duty tasks — whether you’re on site or in the workshop.
I’ve seen these bars make a difference in countless applications, from lifting machinery to carefully prying components without damage.
A solid pry bar isn’t fl ashy, but it’s absolutely essential.

Grinding wheels — trusted by tradies for their reliability, long, and consistent performance, even in the toughest engine reconditioning jobs
when engine performance depends on precision.
WB TOOLS: CRAFTSMANSHIP, QUALITY, AND A COMMITMENT TO TRADIES
One of the things I’m most proud of at Warren & Brown Tools is the way we combine Australian engineering excellence with carefully sourced international products.
Take our Deflecting Beam Torque Wrenches, for example — a tool that remains designed and manufactured right here in Melbourne.
That’s something truly unique: very few companies still produce these precision instruments in Australia, and it’s a point of pride for us.
These wrenches aren’t just tools — they’re a testament to our local engineering heritage, built with the accuracy, reliability, and durability that tradesmen demand.

Every component, every calibration, is handled with painstaking a ention to detail to ensure that torque readings are precise and the tools last for years in demanding environments.
At the same time, we understand that not every product is manufactured locally.
For items we source internationally, I personally ensure we work only with suppliers we trust from Japan, Taiwan, the USA, and Europe.
I’m very hands-on in this process: products are not simply purchased because they look good on paper.
Every tool, accessory, or component undergoes rigorous testing and evaluation in real-world conditions before it ever reaches an Aussie tradesperson’s toolbox.
This process includes strength testing, wear analysis, and performance trials — if a
product doesn’t meet our high standards, it doesn’t make the cut.
This dual focus — local craftsmanship where it counts, and meticulous overseas sourcing where necessary — is what allows Warren & Brown Tools to consistently deliver tools that professionals can rely on.
Tradespeople know that when they pick up a WB tool, they’re holding something built to perform under pressure, engineered with practical experience, and tested to withstand the realities of everyday work.
It’s a philosophy that has guided me throughout my career: tools should not just exist, they should
enhance performance, ensure safety, and instill confidence.
Whether it’s a Melbourne-made torque wrench or a carefully ve ed imported spanner, every product reflects the same commitment to quality that has defined Warren & Brown Tools for over a century.
Whether you’re on the tools daily or equipping your workshop for bigger projects, these fi ve essentials reflect the quality, performance, and dependability that have made Warren & Brown Tools a trusted partner to tradies for generations.

How about riding an old and poorly maintained dirt bike. One you have to kick to start and push to get home. Dirt bike riding is tricky enough without worrying about being stranded in the bush. So yes, old dirt bikes are cool.
Dumb? Also yes.
That’s what Levon was thinking as his KDX200 fouled a plug on one of Louee Motocross Complex’s many enduro trails. It’s what Fordy was thinking as his engine bolt disappeared into the bush, and it’s certainly what Ammo was thinking as his CZ250 just would not start at all.
Top tip - when you drive four hours to ride an old dunga, it’s good idea to bring more than one bike.
What the young MX whippets riding the latest KTM two-strokes thought of these old geezers wrestling vintage iron around is anyone’s guess. But it made for a colourful spectacle.
Seventeen of them all up, loosely arranged under the Jerkyl banner – a group of vintage dirt bike
lovers named after jerks riding in circles.
Party at the Lue Hotel, followed by nightcaps in the sheepshearer’s quarters that night
If you’re lucky enough to get the old bike running, the next challenge is negotiating Louee’s rocky hillclimbs.
Where green trails turn into black death rides without much notice and where the young guns stood and stared. What is that and more importantly, why are you
riding it? My dad used to have one of those on the farm.
Cruel but fair.
The most popular model on display at Louee was Honda’s XR. From the early 1980s, these red tractors dominated the Aussie trail bike market.
Capable, lightweight, reliable. Or they were. With 40 years on the clock the units at Louee were now showing signs of abuse and neglect.
The Jerkyls turned up with an impressive
The Jerkyl crew takes on the toughest trails, with style and a few crashes
collection of XRs in 200, 250, 350 and 500 capacities. Starting them was a bit of a lo ery but they all tackled the trails with no dramas.
The 200 is the mountain goat but low and slow, the 250 a be er all-rounder with decent suspension and good power-toweight, the 500 is low and heavy with average suspension, which leaves the 350 as the Goldilocks machine.
The plush suspension soaked up Louee’s jagged rocks, its power delivery, easy handling and light steering made the 350 juuust right.

After a bit of bike fe ling, many beers and plenty of bench racing, day two saw a multi-rider a empt on the expert-only Tom’s Hill. The idea was to stop at the first tree and ride up in a group. Easier said than done.
The hill looks fl at but it’s not, and there are

rocks at the top that can be a challenge even for modern bikes. Once you start it’s not easy to stop and get going again so it was a case of keeping momentum and hoping for the best. Minor carnage followed for taller bench racing tales in the clubhouse. Back in the paddock,
Scruff rolled out his KX500 for a spin on the motocross track.
A legendary machine that put out a genuine 60bhp back in the day, the mighty KX proves that modern machinery has improved in most key areas like braking, suspension and handling. But power? Not so much.
So if you’re thinking that riding dirt bikes isn’t interesting enough, why not spice things up by riding something that may or may not make it to the end of the ride? The uncertainty adds to the excitement.
And if it all goes pearshaped, you’ll have some ripping yarns for the pub.

WHEN THE weather warms up, tradies everywhere start tuning their rigs for weekend escapes and off -road adventures.
But even the toughest 4WD or ute can be brought undone by poor-quality fuel or dirty oil.
That’s where Ryco steps in — a trusted name in filtration built for Aussie conditions. From the Ryco Universal Fuel Water Separator Kit and Sensor Kit to the Ryco Universal Catch Can Kit, these products are designed to protect engines from the kind of contaminants that can turn a dream trip into an expensive recovery mission.
BUILT FOR THE BUSH Tradie and LandCruiser enthusiast Zac Fiddelaers recently put Ryco’s gear through its paces for a Tradie Tough Test earlier this year.
His weapon of choice?
A 2017 GXR 200-Series Cruiser — a twin-locked, remapped 4.5 V8 TD that’s every bit the outback beast. The last thing he wants is water or debris ruining a motor worth tens of thousands.
Out on the forest tracks of Noojee in eastern Victoria, Zac put the Ryco Fuel Water Separator Kit to work.
Designed to remove
98.7 per cent of water and debris before fuel reaches critical engine components, the kit helps ensure the Cruiser stays in top shape — even when running questionable regional fuel.
“It gives you peace of mind that if you do have crummy fuel, it’s not going to destroy your motor,” Zac said.
The optional Ryco Sensor Kit takes things a step further, allowing tradies to monitor filter performance directly through their phone.
Zac wired it into his 12V cigare e port with no drilling or extra cables required. “It was really easy to hook this up and
connect my phone,” he said.
“If you have a smartphone and use apps, you can use this.”
Zac also fi ed Ryco’s Universal Catch Can Kit, a simple upgrade that helps prevent crankcase gases from contaminating the engine’s air intake system.
“That catch can helps save all that extra oil going back into the intake of the engine,” Zac said.
With a large sump capacity and an exterior
service indicator, Ryco’s Catch Can is built for long trips and easy maintenance — exactly what tradies like Zac need when they’re miles from the nearest workshop.
Whether it’s the outback, the bush, or a muddy trail, Ryco gives tradies the confidence to push their vehicles further.
With high-effi ciency filters and smart monitoring options, Ryco ensures that engines stay clean, effi cient, and adventure-ready.

THERE ARE TWO colours that spark joy for me as an angler. They include dazzling blues in every imaginable shade and the natural green hues of the stream side vegetation and water deep in the depths of jungle streams.
There are few places even in the over-endowed Australian landscape that can produce these colours I so desire.
They include the length and breadth of the Great Barrier Reef and the rainforest streams and rivers of Far North Queensland and Cape York.
However, a recent trip abroad unlocked a new place to receive both these colour sensations.
For me, it was the chance aboard a charter up in New Britain Island in north-eastern PNG.
Both jungle streams of every conceivable nature and barrier reefs filling every bump and rise in the rugged and newly volcanic island.
In this feature, let’s take a look at the Jungle Streams and focus on two of the iconic species, Jungle Perch of North Queensland and the Spot Tail Bass (Lutjanus fuscescens) of New Britain Island. Very different in size and nature yet with one brilliant characteristic that excites the senses. Each fish has a passion for smashing things on the surface, with deadly accurate strikes on anything hapless touching down.

Jungle Perch haunt crystal-clear Far North Queensland streams, waiting beneath shady logs and boulders for anything unlucky enough to land nearby
After so many years travelling across northern Australia, it has become the rainforest and reef that have captured my heart and lead to Cairns being home base. Amongst the rugged northern rainforest clad mountains, Cairns has been the perfect launchpad for my fishing endeavours.
For us northerners, its nothing to jump in the car and drive two or three hours to fish a remote spot.
It’s one of the li le cri ers that exploit the jungle and tropical east coast streams that I want to focus on, the mighty Jungle Perch.
Although they don’t have teeth and an exceptional specimen only measures 50cm long, Jungle Perch are amongst the most mystic and sought after cri ers in this part of the world.
Young anglers with an adventurous spirit have really capitalised on the trend of walking a long way upstream to fish that holy grail top-pool. Usually the place before rapids or waterfalls make it impossible for these fish to move higher. If given the chance, that dominant fish will make its way to the farthest place upstream to select only the finest morsels off the menu.
Walking, wading and swimming up these crystal-clear jungle pools is not for the feint hearted. Seldom is the day you make it back from one of these missions without bruises and scratches.
But the absolute unaltered scenery and clean cool bubbling water make the efforts worth the while.
Around every li le bend and corner of these mountain streams, jungle perch might hide under a shady tree or log jam.
They might be casually finning out in the current in the open or working a seam for morsels being washed down in the endless flow.
Being an incredibly intelligent fish, jungle perch can become wary very quickly. A slight alteration in mood and they can go from smashing things indiscriminately to very discerning in the blink on an eye.
And they have very acute eyes, capable of tracking prey above the crystal-clear waters they inhabit. Quite often an angler will miss the initial strike from a jungle perch, reflexes not yet cued in. It will be that second or third strike which finally brings hook and jaw together.
Although feeding on a very large range of prey, like all predatory jungle fish, JPs need a healthy respect for eating when fed.
If a grasshopper or spider or lizard or baitfish or prawn

or any other tiny creature intersects the flow of water, look out.
Being omnivorous, a sweet fig dropped from above is sure to get gobbled up. JPs are competitive feeders and pack a acks are a great feature of this style of fishing. A tiny popper, fizzer, walk the dog or insect imitation will cover most of the surface options. Flies, spinner baits, paddle tails, soft plastic frog and prawn imitations plus a huge array of diving lures have been successfully launched at these fish.
The short and dogged fight is often punctuated by leaps from the larger specimens. When retrieving a lure of any sort, try and have your rod tip down and to the side to allow for a solid strike and hookup.
If the first strike is missed simply keep on retrieving without yanking the lure away if possible. Any suspicion on the fish’s part and 10 JPs can turn into no JPs very quickly. Then it is off to the next pool to try again.
On a super light set-up, which might be 8-10lb braid topped with 12-15lb leader and a whippy li le spin stick, these fish perform very well. Although wrapping you around sticks and brushing off on boulders can be an
issue, most of the structure is smooth so they can be extracted with smart rod angles and patience.
Casting accuracy is probably the most important factor when it comes to having a good time. Casting from a boat or walking upstream on foot both require equal dexterity as any stray casts can become snagged. Lures snagged, line snapped, a re-rig is in order… it can get tiring quickly!
Jungle Perch ‘Kuhlia rupestris’ have an extremely wide range across the Indo-Pacific. They can move vast distances and it is thought they use flood plumes out at sea to spawn. Incidentally the Jungle Perch is alive and well in the rivers of our next great location. But in this place they become the hunted, rather then the hunter!
The mist and cloud fell silently over the rugged volcano tops. Li ering the island like a vast up-sweeping framework of towering infernos.
A few of them smoking in a timely reminder of recent activity. Some may remember when that jewel of the pacific Rubaul was devastated by volcanic eruption back in 1994.
Dazzling blues and deep jungle greens set the scene for two of Australia and PNG’s most exciting surface-smashing sportfish
Young anglers trek upstream toward remote top-pools where dominant jungle perch claim the best feeding lanes
In its fairly recent geological history, massive upheaval has been the norm. Mountain ranges have risen and been carved and eroded by powerful volcanic action, tectonic plate shift and the forces of gravity and precipitation.
The coastline is dissected by hundreds of creeks and rivers with a staggering variety in length and discharge.
Where the jungles are still intact (with a few exceptions due to logging), beautiful rainforest and thick coastal riparian vegetation spills down to the riverbanks.
Where annual wet season and monsoon cycles have an exacerbated effect on these tropical rivers, huge rises and falls are possible.
Overnight rains can turn a clear jungle stream into a cloudy run-off with the fish ducking for cover.
Amongst these places of boom and bust live two of the most ferocious fish on earth. Spot Trail Bass and Black Bass, each with powerful jaws full of canine teeth, ready to rip and tear into baitfish, prawns and fresh morsels falling from the sky.
Whereas the Black Bass are typically located around the lower reaches and estuarine areas, our focus fish the Spot Tail will live all the way upstream into the highest rapid, riffle and waterfall areas.
Where the systems are at their most pristine, most
jungle clad, most isolated, cleanest and absolutely full of submerged timber and rock.
For fishing enthusiasts who love throwing surface lure presentations in clear, structure covered waterways, this is heaven. At any moment a jungle beast might fly out of its home and destroy your offering.
As a fellow jungle stream predator, Spot Tail bass have a very wide variety of prey items, including li le jungle perch!
The menu will also include everything from crabs, prawns, baby crocodiles, li le mammals, frogs, lizards, snakes, you name it! If it happens to be either drifting or swimming in any of the upstream jungle sections of a river in New Britain, it is fair game for these toothy cri ers. Lures with the best chance at enticing predatory strikes are a variety of colourful surface and shallow-medium diving lures armed with super strong hooks.
Spot Tail bass are visual feeders and have extremely good eye sight. As soon as a lure touches down, it is best to begin cranking it back to entice a reaction strike. A surface lure should be worked rhythmically back out of cover and it’s important no slack is in the line when things go tight as a powerful strike is necessary to set the hooks. What comes next is a few seconds of pure tug-of-war as the fight is won or lost in an instant. If it gets you back into a snaggy lair, it’s goodbye fish and the end of your lure.

When conditions are right and you find yourself well upstream in clean flowing waters, it is hard to resist sticking with surface lures. The strikes on surface are electric, the speed and ferocity of a big spo y charging up underneath the lure before erupting on it is something not soon forgo en. Some luck is usually needed but modern rods matched with strong drags and abrasive resistant leaders helps tilt the balance in the anglers favour. Although the smaller specimens give up quite quickly after a few initial charges, the bigger models are much more powerful. Check your lure after tangling with one and those teeth marks are sure to leave an imprint.
As opposed to black bass which seem to have canine type teeth front to back, the spot tails have huge canines in the front then almost serrated teeth further back allowing both grip and slice in the one bite. Also despite not being quite as well known as the more famous black bass, spo ies get equally big if not longer. Reports of unstoppable beasts were relayed to me of fish around the 40-50lb mark and well over a meter! Imagine
encountering that in a clear mountain stream si ing under a log at the base of a rapid.
Both the Jungle Percha and Spot Tail Bass are striking fish to look at. Anglers are drawn to them partly due to looks, partly due to the challenge they present and partly due to the magnificent scenery you catch them in. Although the target of mostly catch and release, both are very fine on the dinner table as well, but regulations prevent their consumption in Queensland. For fishos that love their pursuit for the spectacular scenery as much as for catching a fish, these are two well worth having on the hit list. They smash surface lures, fight hard and seem to live on in the memory bank a li le longer then most other fish. Walking a timber encrusted bank in search of these cri ers or drifting down a stream where time simply stood still is a feeling hard to replicate in other fishing environments.
Surface hits from wary Jungle Perch come fast and furious, often needing multiple strikes before hook and jaw finally meet

TRADIES KNOW that no two days on site are ever the same.
One minute you’re knocking out a quick fi x, the next you’re navigating a tight workspace, tools in hand, with clients and suppliers moving around you.
It’s all part of the gig — but it’s also a reminder that no ma er how careful you are, things can still go wrong.
A dented surface, a customer bunging their elbow, or a damaged fi xture can quickly turn into a costly headache. That’s where Public Liability insurance* steps in.
Whether you’re just starting out or have been around the building blocks a few times, Public Liability insurance is one of the most essential types of cover a tradie can have.
It provides coverage for legal fees and compensation costs if a customer, member of the public, or a supplier claims against you for injury or damage to their property as a result of your alleged negligent business activity.
In other words, it’s designed to protect businesses when accidents happen — because even small incidents can lead to big claims.
For many tradies, having Public Liability insurance isn’t just about peace of mind — it’s often a requirement.
Site managers, contractors, and councils regularly ask for proof of insurance before you can start work, and for some trades, it’s a licensing must-have. Cancelling a policy once you’ve shown proof might seem like an easy way to save money, but it can create far bigger problems down the track: breach of contract lawsuits, suspended trade licences, or having to pay out-of-pocket for a costly claim. Sole traders,
in particular, wear the financial responsibility for their business — so one claim could easily affect both business and personal finances.
Public Liability insurance ensures you can keep working confidently, knowing you’re protected if something goes wrong. Ge ing covered has never been simpler thanks to BizCover.
Tradies can quickly compare quotes from selected leading Australian insurance partners, choose their cover, and receive policy documents straight to their inbox — often quicker than a lunch break.
Proof of cover is just as easy.
Your Certificate of Currency (CoC) is emailed instantly after purchase and can be accessed anytime. For those with Business Insurance Pack policies through AIG or RelyOn, your CoC now includes a QR code, making it easy for foremen or project managers to verify that your policy is current without needing to log in or contact anyone.
With 86 per cent of small businesses saving when switching to BizCover†— like Luke, a handyman from Victoria who saved $150 on his Public Liability insurance‡—now’s the time to get sorted.

FOR MORE than 65 years, Wilson Timbers has been part of the backbone of Queensland’s building industry as a trusted local supplier known for its service, expertise, and genuine care for tradies. Founded in 1957 by Colin Wilson and his father, the family-owned business remains true to its motto: ‘When only the best will do.’ Today, the company is going strength to strength with Marketing and Sales Manager Erin Gardner helping lead its evolution.
Having joined two decades ago, Erin has seen the business grow while staying true to its roots.
“When you work for a good company, you don’t have a reason to look elsewhere,” she said.
“The culture here is built on loyalty - to our customers, to our suppliers, and to each other.”
Wilson Timbers’ heart lies firmly in its trade base - the builders and renovators who rely on them every day.
The company’s approach blends expert advice, product knowledge, and genuine care. “Our customers aren’t just

account numbers,” Erin said.
“We know their projects, their challenges, and their goals. That personal connection is what keeps people coming back.”
From high-end architectural builds to everyday extensions, Wilson Timbers supplies everything from structural timber and fibre cement to roofing, insulation, hardware, and composite decking.
The team prides itself on recommending the right solutions - not just what’s on the shelf, and offers affordable local delivery as part of its community-first approach.
Beyond supply, the company is part of the community fabric, investing heavily in training so staff can provide expert, reliable advice.
“We see education as a form of support” Erin said.
“Helping customers make the right choice builds long-term trust.”
As a proud member of HBT National Buying Group, Wilson Timbers continues to strengthen its role as a trusted local supplier with national backing — proving that independence and collaboration can go hand in hand.
“Being part of HBT gives us the power to stay competitive while maintaining our independence,” Erin said.
“It allows us to focus on service, education, and community support, while accessing the scale and pricing usually reserved for big-box retailers”.
HBT connects independent stores like Wilson Timbers with a powerful supplier network, offering better pricing, shared insights, and a stronger collective

voice in the market.
The partnership also opens access to an even broader range of products including categories their customers might not typically associate with Wilson Timbers. “Our customers often say,
“If I can source my products through you, I’d rather get everything from you’” Erin said. “HBT helps us make that possible.”
PROUDLY LOCAL, NATIONALLY CONNECTED
After nearly seven decades, Wilson Timbers stands as proof that being independent doesn’t mean standing alone. With deep roots in service and strong national connections through HBT, the company continues to live by its motto — ‘When only the best will do.’
For tradies across Queensland, that promise means more than quality products.
It represents reliability, partnership, and a commitment to building a stronger, more connected community - one project at a time.

WHEN YOU’RE up against a deadline and the job’s on the line, having the right gear can make all the diff erence.
For most tradies, that means knowing where to go when the task calls for something beyond the usual drill, demo saw, or trailer.
That’s where the team at Kennards Hire steps in — not just as the go-to for everyday gear, but as experts in specialist equipment that keeps Australia’s job sites running smoothly.
BEYOND THE BASICS
Kennards Hire’s Specialist Solutions division isn’t just an extra bonus — it’s a game-changer for tradies across civil, construction, and infrastructure projects.
We’re talking everything from hoists, telehandlers and heavy-duty winches to power systems, access platforms, concrete-care tools, traffi c-management setups, and pump systems.
“We understand that by the time a tradie rings our branch, the job is already under pressure,” Kennards Hire General Manager Fleet David Schurman said.
“Our goal is to have the right equipment ready with minimal fuss, so you’re back on the tools rather than waiting.”
For the big end of town, that specialist gear helps manage risk, safety and effi ciency on complex sites.
But for the everyday tradie — like a plumber tackling a flooded trench or a concreter stripping
a large floor — it’s about access to the right gear when it counts, without the upfront costs or headaches of ownership.
Buying specialist gear outright might seem tempting — until the next job rolls around and needs completely different a achments, capacities or specs.
“There’s standard benefi ts that you get when you hire versus you buy,” Schurman said.
“There’s no upfront cost to purchase the asset. You only pay for what you use. You don’t have to store, maintain or service any of the equipment. There’s tax incentives.
“More specifically for specialist equipment — if
you need a concrete grinder and go and spend ten grand to get one that’s set up for a particular job, great — you’re ready for that job.
“But the next one might need different diamonds, a different vacuum, and suddenly you’re back to buying again.”
That’s where hiring comes into its own.
Not only do you avoid upfront costs, servicing and storage, but you get fi t-for-purpose, certified gear every time.
“It’s bespoke and expensive equipment,” Schurman said.
“We offer the benefi t of just being able to take it, use it, get the job done, and move on to the next one — leaving the worries behind.”
Kennards Hire’s TRADE EASY service is designed to make life simpler for
Kennards Hire has what you need to power your next job
tradies on tight schedules.
With perks like 2-hour delivery windows, priority runs, on-site swaps and after-hours returns, it’s built for the real world — not the paperwork one.
“There’s convenient delivery times, pickup times, and after-hours services,” Schurman added.
“The gear we buy goes through a process to make sure it’s fi t for purpose.
“Our equipment is top-ofthe-range, maintained and serviced so it’s ready for them to just take and go.” It’s that ‘ready-to-roll’ mindset that keeps tradies coming back. And Kennards Hire’s internal auditing and quality systems mean every piece of equipment is checked, certified and trusted before it ever hits the site.
If you’re planning a job that stretches beyond the basics, here’s what Schurman suggests:
1. Be specific about the task. Whether lifting, hoisting or accessing, certified gear is matched to defined capacities and conditions.
2. Plan your logistics. Use TRADE EASY service benefi ts to get the right equipment where and when you need it.
3. Think bigger. Specialist equipment can open opportunities. The right lift, pump or platform can turn a tough job into a smooth one.

MAKING TRADE EASY, EVERY TIME
At the end of the day, it’s not just about the machinery — it’s about the people behind it. Kennards Hire’s focus on feedback, proactive service and deep product knowledge ensures tradies are ge ing support that’s as specialist as the gear itself.
Kennards Hire has what you need to power your next job

Why the Local Guys stay switched on with the team at Test & Tag Training
FOR MORE than a decade, Test & Tag Training has helped tradies across Australia and New Zealand get qualified, stay compliant, and build their own businesses.
This includes one of the biggest names in the industry: The Local Guys.
If there’s one nifty tool that’s held owner Jarrad Goulding in good stead this entire time, it’s access to Test & Tag Training — Australia’s leading test and tag course provider — whose high-level, straightforward approach has made it the go-to training partner for some of the largest test and tag franchises nationwide.
Ever since day one, Jarrad has relied on the team at Test & Tag Training to get his franchisees qualified.
The team at Test & Tag Training help contractors, site managers and other tradies bring the qualification in-house.
“Test & Tag Training has been a fantastic partner of ours,” Jarrad said.
“I’ve had lots of opportunities to work with other places … but when you get a good partner, that’s just really ethical and provides good quality training, equipment, licensing, you don’t part with that.
“It’s just been a fantastic
relationship with us.”
Jarrad know what a bad test and tag course experience is like, having had one himself when he first got into the trade.
“When I got my test and tag license many, many years ago, I did it through local TAFE,” he explained.
“They just had a sparky doing the training, and I left knowing about as much as I knew when I walked in.”
“Whereas the quality of Test & Tag Training is second to none.”
EQUIPPED ANYWHERE, ANYTIME
Given the widespread nature of Jarrad’s
business, having the team at Test & Tag Training available nationally either in a classroom, online or even on-site has been huge.
It’s also a one-day course as well, which means li le down-time compared to the invaluable asset of being qualified.
“There’s so much flexibility, which is great,” Jarrad said.
The team at Test & Tag Training also partners with Appliance Testing Supplies to provide businesses with the equipment they need — from PAT testers to test tags and accessories.
“As our franchisees continue to expand their businesses, and they need the necessary equipment for testing and tagging or things like that, they’ve

All this is backed by lifetime technical support; something Jarrad really values in a service like this.
“They’re who I go to for my support,” he said.
“Franchise partners will come to me or come to us for support.
“But if we don’t know the answer to it, we’ll go to the team there at Test & Tag Training, there’s nothing they don’t know.
“It’s freaky for how much they know, they’re the

pinnacle in the industry for training and for equipment.
“Hence why we don’t go anywhere else.”
The Local Guys aren’t the only ones who trust Test & Tag Training — with over

SMASHING GLASS
ceilings while smoothing walls Solid plastering female apprentices and best friends, Holly Crimmins and Amity Gordon, are turning heads in the construction industry for all the right reasons.
According to Jobs and Skills Australia, there are only 4,600 qualified solid plasterers working in Australia, and females make up just 1 per cent of the workforce — highlighting critical skills gaps in the building sector and the need to a ract more people to the highdemand profession.
FINDING THEIR FOOTING IN PLASTER
Twenty-year-old Holly Crimmins and twentyone-year-old Amity Gordon both stumbled into the industry by chance, accepting jobs as labourers while looking for full-time employment.
This led them to study a Certificate III in Solid Plastering at TAFE NSW Lidcombe, where they have forged a newfound friendship and passion for plaster. The two apprentices are thriving in the classroom and on the building site, securing jobs in their local areas of Moss Vale and Narromine, where they are pu ing their skills to the test.
“Solid plasterers play a fundamental role in the delivery of safe, durable and compliant housing and infrastructure,”
TAFE NSW Plastering Teacher Graham Brisbane explained. “With the population of Greater Sydney expected to increase by 1.4 million people over the next fi fteen years, it’s critical we have skilled young talent on the job to support the growing region.
“Since Holly and Amity entered the classroom, they’ve gone from strength to strength, showing that gender doesn’t have to be a barrier for females considering a career in trade-based professions like plastering.”
For Holly Crimmins, the practical and physical demands of plastering were what a racted her to the trade.
“Trades run in my family, so it was only a ma er of time before I found my calling on the construction site,” she said.
“Working with my hands and using different techniques and materials to create something I can
stand back and admire instantly appealed to me.”
Being one of the only females on the job site has never deterred Amity Gordon.
Instead, Amity sees it as an opportunity for other females who are seeking a rewarding career.
“Since day one, my employer and TAFE NSW Lidcombe have created a supportive environment for me to learn the skills I need to be successful in the industry,” she said.
“Knowing that plasterers are in short supply is a huge advantage for anyone thinking about a career in the trade.
“I hope my story shows other females that if I can do it, they can too.”

APPRENTICE
ELECTRICIAN, Tom Harms is in his third year of his apprenticeship doing work he’s “really passionate about”.
That’s why he found
it such an honour to represent his trade at WorldSkills at both Regional and National levels.
He excelled in both spheres, taking
Gold Medals at both competitions.
“I’ve learnt a lot from competing so far, like using different materials and techniques to what we use at work,” Tom said.
“I’ve also had the chance to make lots of good friends.”
He’s fond of a challenge and the competition threw a few his way, specifically those to do with organisation.
“I’ve learnt to write down my schedules now,” he laughed.
Electricity is in his DNA: Gold medal-winning apprentice Tom Harms shines bright in the trade
Tom is greatly indebted to his employer, Marathon Electrical, for the support they’ve shown him both during the competitions and on the job.
“My coworker Liam taught me most of what I know about the electrical trade, while giving me freedom to learn. I’ve discovered working with good people is the most rewarding part of my job.”
Tom looks forward to expanding himself as an Electrician and specialising within the industry.
Most importantly, he said he wants “to work on projects that will be er people’s lives.”
Tom’s WorldSkills journey is supported by Fluke and the Victorian State Government

FOR MOST SPARKIES, THE BIGGEST DRAMA on site is untangling wires, dealing with a dodgy ladder, or explaining something to an apprentice for the 1000th time.
But for electricians Jasmyn ‘Jazz’ Smith and Logan Barne , the biggest ongoing issue wasn’t mechanical — it was human.
After nearly a decade each in the trade, both had lived the same problem their female apprentices are dealing with now: no
one had thought seriously about basic feminine hygiene support for women on the tools.
“We saw our apprentices going through the exact same issues we did — not feeling like they could speak up when they needed a toilet break, ge ing their period unexpectedly, or having to ask a boss for a lift to the shops. It just shouldn’t still be an issue in 2025.” Jazz said.
Logan agrees, adding that “it was really the mentality of, ‘You’re in a
male-dominated industry, prove yourself’,”.
“You don’t talk about periods, feelings, anything like that. And if you had a bad day, you’d get called out — ‘Oh, you’re on your rag.’ No. Sometimes you’re just having a bad day.”
Both sparkies have put in serious years across domestic, commercial, civil and industrial electrical work. Jazz has moved through commercial, civil, and now residential. Logan started in domestic, moved into larger teams, and now works industrial.
“I love it — but I’ve gone part-time lately because I’m burnt out,” she said.
“I just need a breather and time to focus on The Go Company before I come back.”
ON THE GO (COMPANY )
The idea for their business started small: personal kits they could stash in their utes or leave on site.
But once they spoke to other tradie women, it became clear the problem wasn’t local — it was national.
The Go Company was
Jazz (centre) took home EWIT’s Tradie Lady of the Year 2025
born, funded entirely from their own pockets and built after hours around their full-time electrical jobs.
“We’re still working full-time, so this is a side business that’s quickly becoming full-time,” Jazz said.
“We design the bags, we pack them, and we tailor them to each client depending on their field.”
The kits they’ve created are practical, discreet and built from lived experience: toilet seat covers, wipes, disposal bags, pads, tampons, liners, hair ties (because they always break on-site), sanitiser and a QR code for refills. They slide under car seats, into door pockets, or hang easily inside a porta-loo. What started as a small Tassie idea is now shipping nationwide — to construction companies,

hotels, gyms, medical facilities, schools and soon, mining sites.
DEEPLY CONNECTED
Alongside running the business, they organise Tassie Tradie Ladies, a free support network for women in trades and male-dominated industries.
With 80-plus members, it’s a place for connection, belonging, and problemsolving — and a huge reason they understand the gaps so well.
Jazz, who recently took out the 2025 Empowered
Women in Trades Tradie Lady of the Year, admits the recognition still floors her.
“We were gobsmacked,” she said.
“We forget sometimes that what we’re doing is meaningful because it just feels like something that
needs to be done.
“Meeting so many supportive women was amazing.”
Across the country, more women are picking up the tools than ever before.
But thanks to Jazz and Logan, those women now
have two sparkies fighting for the simple things that make a workday safer, fairer and a helluva lot more easier.
And in true tradie spirit, Jazz insists on ending with the important stuff : “Corn dogs are the best smoko.” Logan backs her — and honestly, who’s arguing?

Warren & Brown Tools shows this with its cu ing-edge Deflecing Beam Torque Wrench
TRADIES HAVE long relied on Warren & Brown Tools (WBT) for their amazing level of precision and overall longevity.
The Deflecting Beam Torque Wrench in particular has been a massive game-changer when it comes to delivering top-notch accuracy and design.
This tool is used for calibrating a vehicle’s torque; something many tradies can find themselves doing on day-to-day.
This includes diesel mechanic Chris Galea from NAM Diesel Repairs, who needs a big-time torque wrench for big-time jobs working on massive trucks used at quarries and other heavy machinery sites.
For this, we needed the big guns, so we pulled out WBT’s two-metre-long Deflecting Beam Torque Wrench to work on a Komatsu ‘moxy’ dump truck at UKW Spares and Machinery in Campbellfield in Melbourne’s north.
WBT’s Deflecting Beam Torque Wrench delivers precision within +/-2 per cent across the full torque range.
In other words — it’s super accurate.
BRAND:
Ensuring a vehicle’s torque is up to snuff is crucial for its steering and manoeuvrability.
Chris used the Deflecting Beam Torque Wrench to secure the ramp pins and rear torque rods on the wheels of the moxy, and appreciated the insane accuracy the tool delivered.
“It’s done really well,” Chris said.
“For a big wrench, it’s nice and light.
“We used it to test out the torque on some wheel nuts to make sure they’re torqued up.

“But there’s loads of things you can use them for like engine work.”
No ma er the length, WBT’s Defl ecting Beam Torque Wrench enables tradies to accurately tighten suspension bolts, ensuring proper alignment and secure a achment of various suspension components.
The wrenches have a torque range between 1Nm to 1,340Nm.
This level of overall precision trickles down to the end user; the driver who feels the difference in vehicle performance and comfort.
WBT has spent more than 100-years fine tuning its Deflecting Beam Torque Wrench, and boy does it show.
The all-steel construction of each wrench ensures they’re as tough as the vehicles they work on.
“What I like about the wrench is the grip which is really good, even the big one is really comfortable to use,” Chris said.
“Adjusting the wrench to the required torque was super easy too, just push the dial until it clicks and I’m set.
“That saves a fair bit of time, it slides real easy.”
A deflecting beam design means the tool is streamlined as well without internal springs or wearing parts, which makes it easy to use and long lasting.
WBT has a longstanding reputation for developing tools that last the test of time.
The Deflecting Beam Torque Wrench not only proves that, but also showcases the best in accurate torque se ing.
Big jobs or small, WBT has a torque wrench available for any tradie and most vehicles.
Chris loved how simple the wrenches were to handle and adjust when working on the moxy, and was keen to see just how much more he could throw at it on future jobs.
“These tools definitely get my tick of approval,” he said.
“I can’t wait to use this on-site for many more years to come.”

Empowered Women in Trades (EWIT) has proudly delivered the final schoolbased career program for the year, continuing to build a strong pipeline of future talent in trades.
Introducing students to career pathways they may never have previously considered is central to EWIT’s mission as we drive towards 30 by 30: 30 per cent of trade-based roles filled by women by 2030.
Affectionately known as our Schools Roadshow, the program is designed to meet schools where they are — literally.
In a time of teacher shortages, EWIT has
created a flexible, mobile model that can run in a gym, hall or even a school courtyard. We bring the trades to the students, creating a familiar environment where curiosity and hands-on learning come to life.
2025 PROGRAM SNAPSHOT
This year’s impact speaks for itself:
• 32 school programs delivered across Victoria and South Australia
• 50 schools engaged
• 1,410+ students participated
• 30+ industries/trades showcased
• 98 per cent of students learned something new
• 92 per cent would recommend the program to peers
• 64 per cent now considering a trade pathway
EWIT’s school programs are intentionally sensory, immersive and experience led. Students don’t just hear about trades — they touch, see, smell and try them.
They meet real role models, hear honest ‘day in the life’ stories, and take part in interactive activities that demystify trade careers and build confidence in exploring them.
A standout moment this year was EWIT’s first interstate Schools Roadshow with OneFortyOne in Mount Gambier.
Students followed the story of timber from forest to mill, toured onsite operations, and learned about the trade roles that keep the mill running. It was an unforge able experience that brought industry to life.
Another highlight: working with 15 industry partners to deliver a full-scale, four-hour immersion at Brentwood Secondary College for 100+ students. Industry partners included Bostik, Reece Plumbing, Coca Cola Europacific Partners, NECA Education & Careers, AMWU Breaking Barriers, APA Group, APM Apprenticeships, AGA, RICS, Future Energy Skills, Holmesglen Tunnelling Team, Terraverde JV Team (SRL East – Tunnels North), Kangan Institute, and North Melbourne Football Club. Students were especially inspired hearing from APA Group’s Electrical Instrumentation Technician, Ashley Budimir—who once stood in the very same classrooms as a Brentwood student herself.
EWIT’s National Education Partnerships Manager Jasmine Mishra coordinates the programs. For Jaz, the highlight is witnessing the transformation that happens during the session. At the start of the

day, we ask students to guess what percentage of people in skilled trades are women or gender-diverse, and every time, there’s that collective gasp when we reveal it’s only three per cent.
“Students often come in unsure or not that interested, but by the end of the day they’re a different person,” she said.
“They cut, they nail, they build, create, make mistakes, problem-solve, laugh, get frustrated, and then comes that powerful
More than 1,400 students participated in EWIT school visits in 2025
‘I did it!’ Their friends cheer, teachers smile, and that look of pride says everything.
“We see them open up about their futures, sometimes for the first time. Teachers tell us, ‘I’ve never seen them this engaged before,’ or ‘They’ve never talked about that before.’ The impact is wri en all over their faces.
“Whether or not they pursue a trade, they leave knowing that trades are fun, creative, and for all

gender, but by passion, skill and possibility.”
Providing students with informed choice and permission to explore is essential in shaping confident futures.
“You have brains in your
your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose” — Dr Seuss.
With momentum continuing to build, EWIT is gearing up for an even bigger 2026. Schools, industry partners and
being part of next year’s program are encouraged to get in touch.

IN OUR 30th anniversary year the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC)

Cathryn Greville, CEO of NAWIC

remains commi ed to supporting women in the sector and tackling the sticky issues head-on to bring about culture change.
We launched our Ending Gender Harassment and Building Safer Workplaces Campaign during National Safe Work Month in October with a fl agship panel event in Melbourne and also recently released the findings of a study our NSW Chapter commissioned into parental leave in the construction industry.
BEHIND THE NUMBERS
Figures from the Australian Human Rights Commission show more than 40 per cent of women and 26 per cent of men have experienced workplace sexual harassment in the past fi ve years, with the construction industry ranking among those with the highest rates and lowest levels of formal reporting.
The NSW Government’s annual Women in Construction survey released in October
reported that 70 per cent of women have experienced discrimination in the workplace within the last 12 months, and of those workers who may consider leaving the industry, 16 per cent of women cited sexual harassment as a reason.
Creating safe, inclusive construction workplaces stands at the centre of our Organisational Strategy 2025–2028. We know unsafe and intimidating conduct is never acceptable, and while progress
NAWIC’s ‘Safety in focus: Building an industry free of sexual harassment and gender-based violence’ panel participants
has been made, too many women still face barriers, exclusion, and aggressions.
PROGRESSIVE DIALOGUE
Our ‘Safety in focus: Building an industry free of sexual harassment and gender-based violence’ panel featured expert speakers:
• Nathan Lee – Branch Manager, Legal & Framework Policy, Safe Work Australia
• Dr Niki Vincent –Victorian Gender Equality Commissioner

• Aimee Cooper – Head of Legal, Victorian Equal Opportunity & Human Rights Commission
• Dr Samone McCurdy
– Executive Manager, Insights & Capability, Workplace Gender Equality Agency
• Tiina Debevc – Executive Director, Operations, Fair Work Ombudsman
Hosted by our Victorian Chapter at a venue provided by Brickworks, with sponsorship from WorkSafe Victoria as part of their Health & Safety Month program of events, the panel offered vital perspectives on legislative reforms, prevention response tools, and the leadership needed to create safer, more equitable construction workplaces.
The video of the event will be available on our website as will a range of resources as part of our campaign to inform and
empower everyone in the construction sector to work towards creating safer workplaces.
With funding from the NSW Government’s Women in Construction Industry Innovation Program (IIP) Year 2, NAWIC’s NSW Chapter partnered with the University of Sydney Business School to conduct the parental leave study.
The ‘Boosting retention of women in construction: Supporting women through parental leave’ project explores how to be er support women working in frontline construction roles across Australia during pregnancy, parental leave, and their return to work.
Research has previously found that the transitional periods in and out of parental leave are pivotal in a woman’s
decision to remain in or return to work.
This report delves much further into lived experiences of women and offers a pathway to be er parental leave support. Released in August, the research includes a toolkit and offers clear recommendations for government and industry including:
• The introduction of a parental leave levy to support small businesses and sole traders.
• Normalising familyfriendly work hours and flex on site.
• Investment in safe and inclusive site facilities and practices for pregnant and women workers.
• Enhanced paid parental leave and support for women and men. We are also preparing
to roll out our innovative Allyship in Action: Transforming Culture to A ract and Retain Women project, which was awarded $5 million in funding from the Federal Government’s fl agship Building Women’s Careers (BWC) Program.
The three-year long project will engage men as partners and tackle poor a itudes and behaviours; empower men to sponsor women into leadership; and utilise the power of cultural ambassadors of all genders to embed positive change on the ground.
Each of us can make a difference in our workplace.
Culture change starts with understanding and sharing what is working, what is not and what opportunities we have to explore.
