Get frosty
Early mornings and frosty breath
THERE’S ALWAYS a point in the year where I go from drinking iced la es to cappuccinos in the morning.
A warmer than average autumn slowed that transition this year, but cap season is well and truly here.
Winter - the season where your ute’s windscreen takes ten minutes to defrost, your thermos becomes your most prized possession, and you discover the true meaning of “character building” when you’re cu ing timber in fourdegree wind chill.
Let’s be honest, winter’s never been a tradie’s best mate. Cold mornings, shorter days, and the kind of rain that somehow finds its way into your boots and your soul. But let’s not get too sentimental.
This is the time of
year that separates the keyboard warriors from the real deal - the ones still knocking up frames while the rest are whingeing about the offi ce heating being set too low.
We’ve packed this issue with tips for staying warm, dry, and just sane enough to keep showing up to site without thro ling the apprentice. From cold-weather gear reviews (spoiler: the $19 fl anny is NOT cu ing it) to vehicle maintenance for when your diesel rig wakes up feeling frostier than your ex.
You’ll also find some cracking interviews with tradies doing it tough, doing it smart, and doing it their own way - proof that resilience doesn’t just come in thermals.
And if you’ve ever wondered if it’s possible
to build a pergola during a hailstorm, one of our readers has tried.
The result? Let’s just say it’s “structurally interpretative.”
Look, winter will always be a bit of a dog - it’s wet, it’s moody, and it makes your joints ache like a bad decision. But it’s also when the real legends come out.
When the work still gets done, the jokes are still fl ying, and knock-off beers taste like a reward, not a habit. So chuck
on your beanie, fire up the site radio, and keep at it. Summer’s just a few brutal months away, and until then, we’ll keep the banter hot and the content solid.
Cheers to the grinders, the grafters, and the uncomplaining few who know that real work doesn’t care about the weather. Stay safe, stay warm, and for the love of god, wear socks that match.

There’s nothing like sneaking off from a poorly southern state and heading to Goldy for some much-needed vitamin D.

Aussie surfer Jack Robinson – pictured above –was doing more than just taking a li le dip.
He was competing in the Bonsoy Gold Coast Pro event at Burleigh Heads in May as part of the 2025 World Surf League (WSL) season.
It’s a good chance to remind the rest of the world that no ma er what time of the year, the Aussie waves are still the best.
That being said, it didn’t stop Brazilian surfer Filipe Toledo and Canadien Erin Brooks from finishing first in the men’s and women’s competitions respectively.
“That (surfing) heat was so crazy,” Erin said.
“I’m so lucky that I was able to surf against Steph (Gilmore – eight-time WSL champion).
“I’ve looked up to her my whole life and right when I got on Tour her and Carissa (Moore) kind of took time off, which is fair because they’ve put in so much effort to this sport, but I was like, ‘no, I want to surf against you guys.’
“I’m just glad to get the win off of her because she’s so amazing.”

Blundstone continues to raise the bar in work boot innovation with a fresh lineup from their RotoFlex range—engineered for peak performance, safety, and all-day comfort.

As the most featurerich option in both the RotoFlex and Blundstone’s broader Work & Safety lineup, the #9099 is designed to dominate in even the harshest environments.

guarantees dry feet no ma er the elements.
Blundstone Work & Safety Global Range Manager
Adrian Blandford said waterproofness was one of many major factors tradies consider when selecting boots.
“Tradies are often working in environments where the conditions can vary significantly, facing all types of weather and contending with wet and muddy work sites,” he said.
“No one likes wet feet on the worksite – not only is it uncomfortable, but it can also lead to poor health outcomes.
“The new MAX #9099 Aquashield has an ultra water-repellent leather upper and a fully waterproof Sympatex membrane or bootie.
“This is our most water-repellent boot yet- meaning tradies can stay dry and comfortable on the worksite, particularly as we head into the winter months, with more rain in many parts of the country. “
A full bellows tongue adds another layer of protection, sealing out water, dirt, and debris. Inside, the Artico lining works overtime to regulate foot temperature and wick away sweat, helping tradies stay dry and comfortable all day long.
Underfoot, the GripTek® MAX Vibram sole delivers unmatched slip resistance - the highest in Blundstone’s range - ensuring grip and stability on any surface. This is a serious boot for serious work, blending durability,
waterproofing, and cu ing-edge comfort in one high-performance package.
INFINITE INNOVATION
Also joining the desert sand family is the #8554 Unisex RotoFlex boots, a 5-inch boot that seamlessly combines ruggedness and modern style. Outfi ed with a composite toe cap and a heavy-duty side zip for easy access, this boot is a top choice for anyone who needs quick, convenient wear without sacrificing protection. Its use of Infinergy® technology - originally developed by Adidas for athletic footwear - brings next-level energy return and shock absorption to the work boot world.
“Infinergy® is an E-TPU material that is a super elastic energy foam from BASF,” Adrian explained.
“It’s soft and but resilient, providing enhanced cushioning and reducing the impact of every step.
“This is so vital for tradies who are on their feet allday, every day, and often on uneven and hard surfaces. Infinergy® is also used in sports shoes – it’s designed to provide optimum rebounding!”
Ultimately, this means less fatigue at the end of a long day, and more comfort with every step.

“For a long time, women in trades had limited options when it came to finding safety footwear that suited their foot,” Adrian said.
“The #8864 is the newest addition to our range of Women’s specific RotoFlex boots and was created after receiving feedback from women in trades who wanted a lightweight boot with a sleeker profile.
“The #8864 doesn’t have the TPU toe guard that other boots in our women’s range do, while still offering the safety of a compression-resistant composite toe cap.”
Built from the ground up for women, this boot offers a more tailored fi t while maintaining all the toughness and technology of the RotoFlex range.
With the removal of the external TPU toe guard, the #8864 is now lighter and more streamlined than ever - perfect for those who want a work boot that’s strong but not bulky. It’s a premium safety boot for those who need performance and polish in equal measure. Whether you’re after maximum protection in all-weather environments, a boot tailored for women, or a tough yet stylish everyday workhorse, the latest additions to the Blundstone RotoFlex range deliver across the board.

Piecing it together
How Rinnai builds locally for trade and customers
TRADIES INSTALL them every day in new builds, both residential and commercial.
But how do heat pumps, AC units and other HVAC equipment go from scattered components into tradies’ hands?
Well, the team at The Tradie ventured down to Rinnai’s main factory and warehouse in Braeside, Melbourne to see what goes behind making some of the best Hot Water & HVAC units on the market.
A TO Z
Rinnai has two large (size) manufacturing facilities & warehouses at the Braeside site, both dedicated to assembling, testing and packing Rinnai units, as well as their other well-known brands like Brivis & APAC.
Rinnai Product Planning & Distribution Group Manager, Patrick Corcoran explained just
how much goes into building each product Rinnai has.
This includes its electric hot water tanks and new locally manufactured Enviroflo AR Series heat pump water heaters, which start as a collection of sheet metal, wires and buttons.
Each electric tank and AR Series unit is sheet metal folded, corrosion tested, pulsation tested, pressure tested, welded by hand and machine, laser guided to get seam welds correct, enamelled and oven-baked at 640 degrees, foamed and finished.
Once those steps –among a tonne of others – are completed, each tank and heat pump is wrapped into a box and packed ready for delivery to trade stores across Australia.
“We spend a lot of time on quality,” Patrick said modestly.
“We [even] take random samples off the production line and cut them open to make sure the welds are being correctly made.”
LOCALLY SOURCED
A major factor that separates Rinnai from competitors is its emphasis on producing locally.
Almost everything
coating for the coils – is done just down the road in Oakleigh – is supplied locally.
“The circuit boards for the large APAC HVAC units come from our guy in Seaford … he’s been making these for us since the 90s, with significant upgrades to hardware and software over time” Patrick added.
“All that stuff’s built here – we cut our own wires, it’s all vertically integrated … all parts are of a highquality standard.”
Anything that isn’t
Rinnai’s factory includes a number of state-of-the-art equipment
from high-quality Rinnai Japan approved manufacturers and suppliers from across the globe including Japan, China and Germany.
Given the nature of demand for heat pumps, Patrick said materials are kept to a minimum amount to ensure manufacturing is done efficiently with no waste.
“It’s all run at very low volume in terms of stock – we want to keep it all as low as possible, but enough to get the throughput right, it is very much a just in time mentality” he said.
While much of the factory work is automated such sheet metal processing, shot blasting, enamelling, welding, the tank
While many processes are automated, Rinnai requires
carousel etc, every step of the assembly process requires specialist workers to check or attach the various components.
Patrick said each of the two factories has about 140 employees, with about 470 staff all up nationally.
BACKED BY SCIENCE
Not only is Rinnai’s assembly process topof-the-line, it’s also one of five places in Australia to have a NATA-accredited
Rinnai’s Braeside facility is home to one of five NATA-accredited temperature-control testing labs in the country
temperature-controlled testing facility.
Patrick said this lab – which is the second largest in the country –comprises two rooms which can test heat pump and HVAC units and their temperature and humidity control down to a tee.
“The whole point of these test rooms is that we can operate up to more than 60 degrees, and down to as low as -20,” he said.
“The really important thing is that we can hold each room to 0.2 of one degree – that’s how you get NATA certification.”
BACKED LOCALLY
The new Enviroflo AR
Series heat pumps are the latest products showcasing Rinnai’s dedication to local manufacturing that’s also backed by local tradies.
Patrick said many of the improvements to the pumps were made thanks to Aussie tradies.
“We’ve made them a bit broader so they can be a bit shorter,” he said.
“Tanks can be a bit unwieldy when you move them around the sides of houses and the likes, so we specifically made them a bit shorter while still having enough capacity in terms of litres.
“The 340L is the biggest residential product (of
its kind) in Australia, and it’s Australia made.
“It’s our third generation of this – every new one built is better, quieter and more efficient.”
The fan assemblies were intentionally made to be as quiet as possible to avoid annoying customers’ neighbours.
“Ours is a side discharge machine – the only problem we had with that was if the fan was too noisy, that noise would go right into your neighbours,” Patrick explained.
“We spent a lot of time working on that. The fan is a lot larger than the previous version with a compressor working with a sound absorbing blanket around it.
“In terms of low noise, we got that down-pat.”
Investing in a highquality heat pump is vital in the current cost of living crisis, which is
Much of Rinnai’s factory floor is dedicated to tailor-made projects for large scale commercial and government contracts
why Rinnai has worked tirelessly to present the AR Series heat pumps as cost effective, and tradie-approved products. With Government rebates available to support the capital and installation costs for a host of different property types, the Rinnai AR Series is a great option for almost any application.
“We talked to plumbers a lot in terms of what they liked or didn’t about our units,” Patrick said.
“We took all that feedback on board … we made the electrical box smaller, we’ve put the condensate drain around the back, we’ve been able to modify the design to suit installation.”

Why Adam from Fixit Group trusts his Trafics
ADAM Skrzypczyk knows what it’s like to have your hands full. He’s the General Manager of Fixit Group in Melbourne, and helps run about eight other businesses across Australia.
Adam’s Trafic has a cage interior with drawers installed – safely housing everything his team needs for day-to-day bathroom and kitchen renovations
There’s one constant between the businesses, however, and that’s their choice of van – Renault Trafic.
FIXING IT
Adam has been helping run Fixit Group with his wife since 2018, working on the likes of bathroom and kitchen renos in the inner Melbourne area in the price range of about $500,000 and under. With work picking up
recently for Fixit Group, Adam reckons he’ll need at least another three Trafics by year’s end – bringing the Melbourne fleet to four.
“I’ve looked at other vans, but I’m happy with these –they’re good,” he said.
“We’re expanding a lot, so this is my choice of van for the work we have now and going forward.”
Adam loved the capacity of Trafic, which offers the longest load length in its class – up to an impressive 4.15m. The Fixit Trafic in Melbourne is a short wheelbase option, with his interstate versions in Brisbane and Sydney being long wheelbase models. All up, a Trafic can have up to 6.7m3 in cargo area.
Adam has had his van’s interior outfi ed with drawers and cages, fi ing all the materials he needs for work and then some.
“I’m not on the tools day-to-day, but I can carry everything my team needs in my van for
a day’s work,” he said.
Not only does Trafic have plenty of room, but also 12 anchoring points and a 12v power socket which add functionality and security to Trafic’s toolkit.
Plus, at a handy 1.97m tall, tradies like Adam and his team can get in and out of areas like underground car parks with ease.
THE LONG HAUL
While Fixit’s work is mainly kept around a 15km radius of Melbourne, Adam’s wider role requires plenty of travel along the east coast.
Whether it’s for cruising between jobs in the ‘burbs, or a road trip between Melbourne and Sydney, Trafic’s fuel economy is top notch. Each van sports a powerful 2.0L turbocharged engine, an 80L tank and a fuel consumption of only
The turbocharged Trafic engine delivers plenty of oomph with 125kW of power and 380Nm of torque
6.5L/100km (EDC automatic model).
All of this adds up to a happy Fixit team.
“They get really good mileage, I’ve done a few trips to Sydney and back in my Trafic,” he said.
“The vans are a very good and quiet van with all the creature comforts you need.”
When Adam’s on those long roadtrips, Trafic has the comfort up front to keep up.
From modular seating to make room for other passengers, or the ability to be configured into a portable offi ce during a rest stop, Trafic has you.
Trafic takes that comfort another step further where tech is concerned, featuring an eight-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with Bluetooth, DAB+ and USB connectivity.
Whether its Fixit Group, or any other tradie business, the safety features on Trafic provide peace of mind.
With 10 driving assistance systems including driver a ention and drowsiness alert, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and Active Emergency Braking System with cyclist and pedestrian detection, Renault Trafic keeps tradies secure.

Ninety Three and counting
Carpenter Michael Ferguson swapped sides of the bar from pouring knock-offs to sinking them. The owner of Ninety Three Group shares his tradie journey
MICHAEL was an assistant manager at the Chase Hotel in Forest Hill, Melbourne when he decided to swap careers and become a carpenter.
He said his experience at the pub helped build his experience before heading into the wide world of the trades.
“The skillset I learned from that has helped me set up where I am now with this business,” Michael said.
After finishing his apprenticeship, Michael went out on his own as a sole trader.
The work came in thick and fast; Michael knew he needed to get more hands on deck.
“Pu ing on your first
coupla apprentices was a bit daunting, but also it was the natural next step,” he added.
“It meant I could move into more work, bigger jobs.”
THE 90S
From there, Ninety Three Group was born. Why Ninety Three Group?
“I wanted it to be personal, but not just ‘Michael Ferguson Carpentry’ … you see a lot of that,” Michael answered.
“I went with the year I was born that stands out a bit – adding the ‘group’ means I’m working to a bigger goal.”
Now a collection of
apprentices and subbies, Ninety Three Group works around residential projects in Melbourne’s east.
“We mostly of it renos and extensions – we don’t really limit ourselves
though,” he said.
“Frame, lock up, fi t-up, cladding, fi t-off, fi x, decking … all of it.
“I did just about everything through my apprenticeship, so that carried on to my business as well..”
CHAMPIONS
Michael made the smart decision to take advantage of Carpentry
Australia’s free apprentice membership when he was learning the trade.
“But when I went out on my own, I didn’t really think about it to start with,” he added.
“Then – as I started pu ing on my own apprentices – I realised it would be great to have that network of people I can bounce ideas off.
“So I signed back up once I got the business going.”
Since then, he’s been named a Carpentry Australia Champion of Industry – helping to grow the trade and it’s standing through the network.

Going electric?
Here’s what tradies need to know about insurance and roadside assistance for ZEVs
YOU’VE PROBABLY heard a lot of noise about electric trucks and vans hi ing the roads. Zero emission vehicles—ZEVs for short— are popping up more and more, whether they’re ba ery electric, hydrogen, or hybrids.
It’s no surprise tradies are eyeing them off, too. ZEV’s can make a lot of sense for those who travel short distances. But one thing you might be asking yourself is: what’s the go with insurance and roadside assistance?
Truck Assist and parent company NTI have been backing transport and logistics operators for decades, so they too have been doing the hard yards when it comes to supporting those looking
to enter the ZEV market.
From working with manufacturers and repairers, to engaging directly with industry— they understand what it means to operate and maintain ZEVs in the real world, and how to help tradies make the switch without ge ing stung.
ARE ZEVS MORE EXPENSIVE TO INSURE?
As NTI’s National Development Manager Craig Carmody explains it’s not the electric motor, the ba eries, or the hydrogen tank that solely drive your insurance costs up. It is more nuanced than that.
“Customers are not paying extra just because
their truck’s electric,” Craig said.
“There’s no sneaky loading on the policy. What ma ers most is the value of the vehicle, and currently ZEVs do tend to cost more up front than your typical diesel workhorse.”
Truck Assist looks at the full picture too - how you use it, where you drive, what equipment you may also be carrying, and your history with claims. It’s business as usual.
WHAT
ABOUT
ROADSIDE
AND SMASH REPAIRSCAN ZEVS ACTUALLY BE FIXED?
Absolutely, depending on the damage - and that’s been a key focus for Truck Assist.
“We’re already supporting repairs on ZEVs by working with our Premium Repairer network to ensure they have access to the right training and tools for the job,” Craig said.
“We have strong partnerships with OEMs, including newer local players in the ZEV space like Foton Mobility, Hyundai Trucks and let’s not forget Hino have had a Hybrid around for over 15 years.”
“Some of the safety procedures are different, but repairing a ZEV isn’t a total mystery - it just requires the right
Zero emission vehicles are becoming an increasingly common on Australian roads, including trucks
approach. When it makes sense to repair instead of replacing, that’s the road we’ll go down.”
But Truck Assist’s ZEV offering doesn’t just stop at insurance. The support also extends to roadside assistance, so you’re not left stuck on the side of the road if something goes pear-shaped.
“We are also very active in the roadside assistance space, including the provision of roadside support for a number of the new EV trucks on the market,” Craig added.
“The roadside offering includes the standard things like tyres, lockouts fl at ba ery and of course towing.”
SO, SHOULD YOU JUMP IN NOW?
Look, ZEVs aren’t a “someday” thing - they’re already on the road. But that doesn’t mean every tradie needs run out and order one tomorrow.
What does ma er is being informed and knowing the support is there if you make the move.
Truck Assist isn’t just slapping insurance on these things—they’re out to help you stay safe, protected and keep your business moving.
ON THE MOVE High country highjinks
YOUNGSTERS race motocross. Older riders take up enduro. And when retirement looms it’s time to enjoy adventure biking. Generally, the older you get, the less hectic the ride. But no ma er which type of riding you choose. dirt bikes deliver adrenalin by the truckload.
You can tell that many riders on the 2025 Ténéré Rally, a fi ve-day tour of the Victorian High Country, still have those off -road skills they learnt as kids. The fi tness might desert
Truckies and tradies on Ténérés
them, but the talent never does...
Those skills were needed on the first hillclimb of the first day for sure.
Dubbed Heartbreak Hill, the climb rewarded good technique with equal doses of commitment and momentum on the steep and rocky trail that climbed out of Bright through a pine forest. Around half the Ténéré
riders needed a second a empt at tackling the technical climb, so things were starting to get real.
WHAT’S A TÉNÉRÉ?
Ténéré is the name Yamaha gave to its first adventure bike launched in 1983. The 600cc single boasted a 30-litre fuel tanks and was named after a particularly challenging section of the
Sahara desert – part of the original Paris-Dakar race route.
The model became a Super Ténéré 750 twin and later a 1200 before the 689cc twin was launched in 2019.
The XTZ690 Ténéré is currently Australia’s most popular adventure bike according to Federal Chamber of Motorcycle Industry figures.
RALLY AROUND IT
Big Ténérés tackling terrain more suited to smaller bikes is all part of the deal. ADV fun is normally generated on bigger bikes on less technical trails than MX or enduro riding. For many whose racing days are behind them, it’s a chance to enjoy the scenery and hang out with mates while still ge ing their riding fi x and talking about bikes. Adventure riding also covers the odd stretch of tar which means you can
Yamaha Factory Racing Rally rider Rodney Faggo er ge ing the most out of the muck
ride to the starting point and avoid the hassle of trailering your bike around the countryside. Plus adventure riders are less exposed to Highway Patrol who don’t tend to hang out in the bush – another advantage for twowheeled thrill seekers. Organised adventure rides like the 2025 Ténéré Rally are not a race. You ride as fast – or slow - as you like in your own group of two or three. That’s because navigation is via GPS so you follow a map
rather than a leader. You supply a GPS and the organising team from RIdeADV loads a map on it each morning. Riders simply follow the trail set each day. One advantage of riding at your own pace is there’s no need to follow in someone’s dust – which happened to be brutal in the High Country in late March.
The event kicked off at the Bright Brewery with a welcome dinner where rallygoers would be the first Aussies to check
out the new model 2025
Ténéré 700 featuring a host of updates. A fully GYTR-ki ed Ténéré was also on display and Dunlop exhibited its range of adventure tyres.
EASY RIDERS
Special guest riders included Yamaha ambassador Stephen Gall who is celebrating 50 years with the tuning fork brand and Yamaha Factory Racing Rally rider Rodney Faggo er. Rod cha ed to rallygoers about his
racing exploits in Dakar and what the race version of the Ténéré World Raid is like to ride, while Stephen offered valuable riding tips to tackle steep and rocky conditions. American rider Brady Allen from @meerkatADV joined the RideADV crew as a special guest and talked about US adventure riding conditions.
Truck driver Alistair Sadler was riding his XTZ660 Ténéré on his first organised tour. The Victorian rider is
no stranger to the dirt but recognises there’s a big step from riding AG bikes around the farm to a large capacity, roadregistered adventure bike. Fellow truck driver Jason Roser shipped his Ténéré twin from WA. Being in the business has its advantages – it cost the same to ship the bike from WA to VIC as the cost of a pair of tyres, which would need replacing after the cross-continental slog anyway.
Bathurst-based

Nothing like hi ing the tracks in the Victorian High Country
ON THE MOVE
transport repair principal Ben Dickinson has already ridden his Ténéré 700 across Australia from east to west. Together with Rod, the pair conquered the 8000km journey from Steep Point in WA to Byon Bay in 2021 with no dramas at all.
It was during this trip that the pair liaised with Safari Tanks to develop a 45L fuel cell for the Ténéré – the same one Ben ran in the High Country which contributed to his award for best bike setup.
That technical first climb set a benchmark for the event and turned out to be the toughest challenge
– until the legendary Blue Rag trail on day four. The climb to the trig is steep, rocky and mostly whooped out by 4WDs. And was purely optional for the Ténéré rallygoers.
CAMPFIRE SONGS
Superb weather greeted the riders as they took in High Country beauty spots such as Craig’s Hut, Woods Point and the gold mining village Walhalla. Overnight stops at Mansfield and Dinner Plain allowed loop rides out of both venues and each night riders enjoyed a group meal to discuss the day’s action. Rain did eventually drop
on the evening of day four and combined with thick fog forced day fi ve onto the tar. But the event had already delivered so much ADV fun that the Ténéré spirit remained high.
“The 2025 Ténéré Rally once again delivered a memorable adventure ride experience,” says YMA Land Mobility Marketing Manager and Ténéré owner Sean Goldhawk.
“With steep and rocky tracks, the High Country is not for the faint-hearted and I take my hat off to all who tackled the tough trails. But if you’re going to take a big adventure bike up places like Blue
Rag, Ténéré is the model to choose,” he added.
“The Ténéré Rally is not just about the ride, it’s about joining up with old mates and meeting new ones. Hearing riders’ stories, checking out other bikes – each one is uniquely personalised - and learning more about setup and which accessories to fi t. It all adds up to a great week away,” Goldhawk added.
A week away from work riding adventure bikes with a group of like-minded mates? It’s no wonder this type of riding has expanded into one of the most popular
motorcycle categories in Australia. “A High Country adventure really should be prescribed by mental health practitioners,” Goldhawk added.
“Because these Ténéré riders will tell you that while four wheels move the body, two wheels move the soul.”
Look out for details of the 2026 Yamaha Ténéré Rally - open to owners of any model Ténéré from the original 1983 XT600Z to the XTZ1200 Super Ténéré and all models in between.

IT’S NO SECRET – tradies love their off -roading. The arid Outback, lush forests and gorgeous beaches –taking the ute or 4WD off the tools, and into nature is a great time.
A good tradie is always prepared for the harsh Aussie conditions that can impact vehicle performance.
Ryco has been at the top of the filtration game for a long time, and we put their latest air filter – the A5002R NanoCel High Effi ciency Air Filter – to the test.
Plumber Lachie Meiss loves his 79 Series Toyota Land Cruiser more than anything, and wants to keep it performing well no ma er the conditions.
TEST #1: NO DRAMA NANO
When it comes to delivering fine filtration, the A5002R does wonders. It’s filter effi ciency is almost perfect at 99.99 per cent, stopping dust and other contaminants from filling engines.
“Most of the off -roading I do is up in Victoria High Country,” Lachie said.
“Anyone who’s been up there knows that it’s pre y much all unsealed roads with lots of gravel and dust.
“Your engine’s copping it, but having a filter like this will definitely help mitigate that.”

“It’s a really solid filter, compared to other filters which can feel paper-thin and you need to replace after one big trip,” Lachie said.
“This Ryco filter is a game-changer.”
TEST #2: CHUCK IT IN
In terms of installing the filter, Lachie loved the simplicity.
“I reckon it was pre y straightforward,” he said.
“You’ve got four clips on the air box itself … the filter follows the shape of the box and fi ts in snug, clip it on and away you go.”
Ryco’s sturdy design for this filter is not just for simple installation.
The A5002R features a unique seal design as well as fl ame retardant material, and a reduction of dust ingestion by >90 per cent compared to OE equivalents.
Making it even more elite, the A5002R doesn’t lose its functionality when driving through rivers, streams or other watery terrain.
“When you’re going away on the roads, you don’t exactly know what you’ll encounter, like a river crossing or bog hole,” Lachie said.
“knowing this filter is going to handle those conditions, it’s a no-brainer choosing something like this to have.”
BREATHE IN
With a filter like Ryco’s A5002R NanoCel High Effi ciency Air Filter at his side, Lachie will be able to adventure with the peace of mind his engine’s loaded with some of the best on the market.

FOR THIS Tradie Tough Test, we ventured out to a quarry at Avalon east of Melbourne to join Denholm Hayter, who works as an operator for material management firm Lantrak.
His work involved plenty of heavy duty work around big machinery and rocky terrain – this meant Denholm was super keen to try out each boot from the AT 65 Series.
Oliver has put a tonne of work into each of these four boots: 150mm Brown Lace-Up Zip Sided Boot (AT 65-490Z), 150mm Brown Lace-Up Boot (AT 65-490), 350mm Black Laced In Zip Mining Boot (AT 65-791) and 240mm Brown Pull-On Riggers Boot (AT 65-493).
TEST #1: TAKE A BEATING
Denholm usually works at the weighbridge, but for our test he worked the smooth drum roller to get pads ready for the next round of trucks.
For long days around rough terrain, Denholm loved wearing the AT 65 Series – all of which are 100 per cent waterproof full-grain leather with 300-degree celcius heat resistant soles.
“Quality and comfort are the first things that come to mind with these boots,” he said.
Oliver has developed each boot model to suit a wide range of applications across construction, agriculture, chemical, oil and gas, mining, and quarrying industries
Each boot is 100 per cent waterproof, which is a big plus in mucky environments such as quarries
“Operating, boots on the ground, these boots do what I need them to do.”
A particular perk of the AT 65-490 Brown LaceUp Boot is its caustic-resistant CORDURA® vamp, providing the AT 65-490 with superior abrasion and caustic resistance.
In terms of toughness, both the AT 65-791 and AT 65-493 boots have extra layers of metatarsal protection, which keeps the fore (top) of workers’ feet guarded from impact or crush injuries.
The SAFETYcell® protection also brings a fully integrated protective shell that enhances abrasion, impact, and cut resistance.
TEST #2: ALL TERRAIN COMFORT
Given Denholm would be wearing these boots all day, everyday, he couldn’t stop complimenting the all-round comfort of the AT 65 Series boots.
“The comfort was something that stuck out to me straight off the bat,” he said.
“They’re all really soft on the feet - I’ve given each boot a try and I can definitely tell these are gonna do great for the work they’re designed for.”
The AT 65 Series boots feature a Q-Flex® non-metallic penetration protection insole, and breathable NANOlite® fatigue-reducing footbeds keep feet dry and comfortable all day.
GETTIN’ AROUND
Overall, we can tell each boot in the AT 65 Series is built to tackle the harsh conditions encountered by workers in construction and mining environments.
Denholm appreciated each boot had its own specific application, but loved the overall feel and durability each one brought to his day on the site.
“You can tell by the quality of them, that you’re gonna be safe in these boots – 100 per cent,” Denholm said.

Diablo’s Demo Demon® Carbide Teeth Rough-In Hole Saw range
Cu ing the perfect hole just got easier thanks to Diablo and its new Demo Demon Carbide Teeth Rough-In Hole Saw. Long-lasting, sharp and deeper than the competition, these hole saws are part of an evolutionary new range of Diablo products
CUTTING THE PERFECT CIRCLE might seem like something any hole saw can do, but Diablo has proven there’s a lot more to it.
As plumber Cody Gledhill found out, the latest Demo Demon Carbide Teeth Rough-In Hole Saw range is stacked with features to lift it above his previous hole saws.
He and his team at Reliable Plumbing do contract work for Monash University, using hole saws for running copper pipe and new drain systems.
These Demo Demon hole saws are suitable for drilling into hard and soft wood, drywall, fibre cement and asphalt.
TEST #1: BUZZ CUT
Diablo’s special carbide teeth technology add a huge boost to these hole saws.
Cody loved the cu ing power, which is optimised to deliver 5x faster holes*.
He tested the hole saws on some yellow tail including some with timber studs in them.
“The cu ing power was absolutely brilliant,” Cody said.
“They didn’t kick on you when it got to certain points, they sliced through anything like bu er.
“With the lower revs, it wasn’t kicking back when I got to tougher points in the wood.”
Not only are the holes be er, but the depth is fantastic at 60mm compared to 40mm from a standard hole saw.
This makes each cut 40 per cent deeper in one-pass, and Cody loved it.
Super easy and quick
BRAND:
“The fact they cut so deep – I could just keep going and that made it super easy and quick,” he said.
These epic new hole saws provide some of the best cu ing length for boring deeper holes in a single pass.
“I really liked how easy it was to get the core hole cut
The Demo Demon® Carbide Teeth Rough-In Hole Saw range has blades ranging between 35-117mm

out after drilling,” Cody added.”
“It slides out insanely easy, other hole saws can get really stuck in and can be quite diffi cult to get out.”
TEST #2: ONE HOLE AFTER ANOTHER
When cu ing holes, tradies are swapping hole saws frequently between different sizes on the fl y.
For this, Diablo has implemented its awesome SnapLock system which allowed Cody to quickly a ach the hole saw he needed and get cracking.
“The Snaplock system is really great – just how they click into the chuck is really easy,” Cody said.
“You don’t have to screw around, it’s just a quick swap around and off you go.
“All that made it really easy to go from hole to hole and do it all nice and quickly.”
Diablo also provides a universal mandrel which helped Cody easily clip each hole saw on and off his drill.
“This made it real easy and quick,” Cody said.
“With other hole saws, a lot are threaded and can be quite frustrating to get done and undone properly.
“But with these ones from Diablo, I can just pop them straight on to the drill.”
DEMON TIME
Cody was left with clean deep cuts into his timber when all was said and done.
After thorough testing with each size, none of Diablo’s Demo Demon® Carbide Teeth Rough-In Hole Saws had any signs of wear and tear.
This left Cody pre y stoked with the end result and keen to keep going back to Diablo time and time again.
“They performed absolutely fantastically,” Cody said.
“Each blade still has all its teeth, there’s no chipping in the colour – I can tell these are gonna last a very long time.”

Bosch’s GLM 50-27 CG laser measure
Lasers these days can do all sorts of nifty tricks, but sometimes tradies just need something straightforward. Bosch has balanced new tech with simplicity with the GLM 50-27 CG laser measure, built tough for day-to-day hard yakka
CHIPPY TOBY SPICER from Pillar Constructions spends a lot of his time on big construction sites where having a versatile kit on-hand is vital for a day’s work.
Whether he’s working on the interiors or exteriors of a new build, having a small, yet handy laser can be super helpful.
That’s where this laser measure – the GLM 50-27 CG –comes to play.
Despite its 119mm size and simple, this laser packs tonnes of features that make it a legendary coworker on-site.
TEST #1: TOUGH NUT
One thing’s for certain: this laser is no delicate flower. Its 1.5m drop resistant and shock-absorbent rubber casing means it can handle your average fall.
“I’ve used a fair few of these lasers in my time because they make your life a lot easier on-site when you have to do a large amount of measuring,” Toby said.
“This one is quite robust – on the site, you can drop things and damage them.
“Not that you should be dropping things, but this laser seems like it can take a beating and remain accurate.”
The GLM 50-27 CG is also IP65 water resistant equipping it for those wet worksites.
Another underrated feature Toby liked was the vibration and sound feedback during measurements after they’re done.
This laser packs tonnes of features
The green laser makes readings easier in both daylight and darkness
Don’t be fooled by its size, this laser contains plenty of power
TEST #2: TECH SAVVY
A simple design doesn’t mean this laser lacks in tech-power mind you.
Through Bluetooth, you can document your measurements quickly thanks the to Bosch MeasureOn app.
“The Bluetooth documentation really stands out to me as a great feature,” Toby added.
“This allows me to measure a house’s worth of skirts after everything’s done.
“Being able to push a bu on and have all those measurements right on your phone is a really big thing for me.
“It saves you having to measure everything - write everything down - and then add everything up.
“That eliminates a lot of time when you’re doing quotes for your customers.”
When it comes to the actual measuring, the GLM 50-27 CG can do it all from room and wall areas, placing or fi ing elements to even calculating material needs.
Like other Bosch lasers, the GLM 50-27 CG also uses a green laser making it great to do day-time measuring in bright areas. This accurate laser also lends itself to the tool’s precision which is ISO 16331-1 certified.
“I’ve used other lasers before, and many were lackluster,” Toby said.
“I measured the same spot four times with this laser to see how accurate it was, and it was millimetre-perfect every time.”
LASER SHOW
Wrapped up in this small package is plenty of power tradies will love, no ma er what area they work in.
The simplicity and connectivity of the GLM 50-27 CG make it a handy addition to any tradie’s toolkit.
“There’s so many trades this will be useful for – concreters, landscapers, electricians, plasterers etc,” Toby said.
“Anyone who needs to do a large form of measuring … any tradesperson could use this and it would make their job a whole lot easier.”

Roos legend chats trades
Kangaroos AFLW star Jasmine Garner has been a force on the oval as well as the tools. The 30-year-old chats with the tradie about how she got into both footy and plumbing
LIKE
MANY
WOMEN
in trades and sport, Jasmine grew up in a world where neither were common.
“Growing up and in school I always leant more toward hands-on work and doing things outdoors,” she said.
“[but] During my time, there wasn’t much talk about females in trades so I didn’t really get into it.”
Despite that, Jasmine’ carved herself out a ripper footy career, playing first with Collingwood in 2017 before making the move to Arden Street in 2019.
While pu ing together numerous stellar seasons with the Roos – which included a Premiership,
Grand Final Best on Ground and seven consecutive All-Australian nods – Jasmine was also learning a trade at the same time.
WELL EQUIPPED
While working at North Melbourne HQ, Jasmine entertained the idea of picking up a trade.
“A few of my friends were doing plumbing, so I asked the club – the best things about footy clubs is they usually know a lot of people,” she explained.
“I spoke to someone who gave me an apprenticeship and I absolutely loved it.
“Completing my apprenticeship was the
best thing – once you’ve learned a trade, you’ve got it for life.”
Two years out from completing her apprenticeship, Jasmine has remained steadfast in her footy career.
While she’s able to keep her eyes on the ball for now, so to speak, Jasmine said having a plumbing qualification in her back pocket was great peace of mind.
“Footy’s in that position where I can get paid well enough where I can focus on that and take care of my body a bit more,” she said.
“Once footy is done, I can always go back to plumbing. Whether it’s
on the tools, or in the offi ce or doing estimates.
“Another great thing about learning a trade is you’re ge ing paid while you’re learning.
“It’s pre y underrated in that way.”
During her time on the tools, Jasmine saw plenty of action through Cooke & Dowse Commercial Plumbers. She did a lot of sanitary, drainage and plumbing with new installation as well as some maintenance work at Crown Casinos.
Jasmine loved being able to see the many parts of the plumbing industry, and downplayed the grubbier stereotype often associated with the trade.
“I know a lot of people –including young girls – think of plumbing they think it’s all just cleaning and fi xing dirty toilets,” Jasmine said.
Jasmine grew up a massive Blues and Kouta (Anthony Koutoufides) fan. With women’s footy growing, Jasmine hopes more young women can realise their sporting dreams. “If you can see it, you can believe you can do it as well,” she said
“It was so far from that. Apart from some of the maintenance a Crown, I maybe had to put in new toilet – but it’s so much more than that.”
FREESTYLING
Juggling both the trades and footy isn’t an experience exclusive to Jasmine.
The Freestyle program is helping kick goals in trade diversity, engaging at a number of events as well as raising general awareness and education
North Melbourne coordinates the Freestyle program, which helps raise awareness around pathways for women and non-binary people eager to get into the trades.
Jasmine has helped with the program, visiting trade expos and cha ing with young women who might be thinking about becoming tradies.
“Every time I go out to events, I think ‘how cool would this have been when
I was growing up?’,” she said.
Throughout her career, Jasmine has noticed the culture change toward women in the trades and in footy.
“Females in footy and females in trades are quite
similar – there wasn’t a lot of that growing up,” she said.
“I was the only girl playing junior footy for a number of years, and it was the same thing on-site.
“I think now in footy – and
towards the end of my apprenticeship – there was a lot more females working in construction.
“When I started trade school, there was just a couple of us in each class. By the end, I reckon in one class it was half female.
“I definitely think it’s turning now for females both in footy and in trades.”

Why do we do it?
When the eyes no longer focus enough to tie a knot. When the wind blows, the rain stings and the ocean rails against us. What is it that makes fisher-folk keep going back time and time and time again. COMRADERY is the answer we discuss in this feature. We will look more closely at the silent perfection of simply catching a fish, felt by the individual but experienced amongst company. Ask yourself, what is the most vivid memory you have
of fishing? Inevitably that memory will involve another or others viewing the spectacle, offering free advice and helping wrangle the catch. High fives, hand-shakes and some random li le dance or di y might have surfaced. That feeling of joy or bewilderment when something from the water is extracted through skill, intellect or blind luck. “Remember that time when the fish just chewed their heads off ?”
Words and Images: Tim O’Reilly
I am tapping this piece amongst a group of fishing friends who span the globe, span differences in age, in time zones and fishing ability. They come together annually, to reforge a bond cemented in a common pastime. These same crew are mostly retired, love travel and undertake all manner of activities around the world from scuba diving to photography. Yet fishing and the comradery of feeding themselves in remote and fish filled locations keeps the cha er alive and the stories and wine flowing in equal quantities.
Welcome to the jungle
In a modern world, us fisher folk have far more opportunity to sample the world’s unique fisheries. Spanning the globe has been within the reach of many. Domestic fishing travel with friends and family has become common place.
Travel in remote locations has become far more achievable. Despite Covid pu ing a dampener on international travel plans, thousands of Aussies used it as an excuse to get on the road, buy a boat or caravan and gevt out to see the great outdoors. Catching a fish is usually a bonus or accompaniment to travel more generally.
Companionship in fishing spans generations and surely goes well back to the rise of homo sapiens. It’s in my genes I tell you… I need to go fishing and hunting with family and friends! I forget how many times as a kid and then as a teenager hurriedly walking home from a fishing excursion to display my catch and with some
luck maybe boast a li le. The environment and pastime stimulated my senses, but it was the ability to share these experiences with others that set fishing on fire. What is it that keeps people coming back, year after year, generation after generation to enjoy the pursuit of fishing? How can some people talk and think and ponder endless fishing possibilities and future plans? The answer often lies in comradery and the ability to share that lived experience with others in the great outdoors. It has the tendency to forge friendships which stand the test of time. Fishing adventures live on in the memory bank and for those who are truly addicted, it keeps you awake for hours the night before a big trip! Anticipation is just as much a part of fishing joy as it is a part of fishing success.
Assembling a crew
It can be challenging to find the right combination of people, family and friends to pursue the pastime of fishing. Requirements in affordability, comfort and adventure swing wildly amongst individuals. For all kinds of reasons, we often find ourselves fishing alongside other people with whom we have very li le else in common. But somehow it just works and the over-riding joy of reeling in a fish in a manner you enjoy is compounded by company. It speaks to the power of a pastime when all preconceptions of personality, culture, race and gender are secondary to it’s pursuit. Where to go, when to go, what to bring and how to put the whole thing together are logistics that fuel the mind Everyone loves a banger
FEATURE
of avid fishers. Coming together to plan seems to jump up the excitement and anticipation. Planning a fishing excursion is cathartic in itself. These days a plethora of Apps and technology make the experience more grandiose as tides, lunar movements, almanac, water temperatures, currents and Google Earth are all on the average persons mobile. Endless chats amongst close friends help refine the details as fishing adventures take shape.
Every year I fish with groups of mainly blokes who get together to forge new bonds, new friendships and new experiences. Blokes from board rooms to mining pits and every occupation in between suddenly galvanised by the great outdoors and fishing. Weeks before the trip takes place the cha er starts up, WhatsApp starts chirping and the banter flies left right and centre. Once on board the boat the beers start flowing, tales of previous infringements are aired, recounted and told over and again. That lived reality, bearing witness to an event no ma er how fictional in nature. In most instances fishing gear starts falling out the cracks as the conversation goes downhill.
Throughout the rest of the fishing excursion, fumbles and dramas grow into future tales. Friends and even new acquaintances will laugh at you. When you can’t see yourself, you learn to take yourself less seriously, helped by those who happily laugh at your foolishness. That CEO or corporate billionaire will quickly be bought back to ground by the pack. It’s surprising how quickly it happens and how much they enjoy not being taken too seriously. At the end of the day, if you can’t laugh at yourself, it’s all over. When fishing with friends, it’s like
being transported back to your childhood. You even have permission to act like a kid, something hard to achieve in your own company.
Cracking a cold one
Right or wrong, drinking in Australia tends to forge comradery. It is almost a cultural tribute to fishing. Aussies tend to order their beer by the case or their wine by the carton. Even those who avoid the drink for the most part will feel it a moral responsibility to give their liver a good shake up during a fishing trip. There is always one or two who get a bit carried away and hence the stories normally flow on from some irresponsible or clumsy act. Either way, pouring a li le liquor down your throat tends to work as a social lubricant, helping to regale tall tales with li le effort and plenty of grandeur.
For the ‘Gram
Social media by nature seeks the approval of the poster’s peers. All too often this is mooted as ill conceived. A sore point for those hardened against such wanton selfindulgence. But the ability of modern communication to allow fishers to share a story or brief window in time has helped propel the pastime into the modern era. It’s why tackle stores and bass boats exist! A whole interconnected worldwide community lives within the pursuit of fishing! Many living moderns franetic lives find it difficult to cement friendships and fishing bonds. Plenty of these character cut to the chase, book a spot on a charter and make new friends live out in the blue yonder. I’ve been lucky in my wanderings which have led me into
Shared joy as the Spanish bite hard
quite a few experiences fishing with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders on their traditional country. You can see the fabric of fishing and hunting woven into their right cultural tapestry. It is always a humbling and communal experience the act of catching a fish, cleaning it and cooking it to share. Something innate in many people from all walks of life. But at it’s heart and most fundamental nature, fishing is about subsistence and survival and living your best life. Or at least that’s where it all started!
It is the diversity of individuals from all walks of life that give such strength and credence to the pastime of fishing. Part of the reason why recreational anglers cannot simply be swept aside by an increasingly green-leaning agenda is their connection to and representation of the marine and riverine areas around Australia. Even
the most right leaning, green-hating fisherman still wants their li le patch of paradise protected. However, regulations and sectorial change are threatening both recreational and commercial fishing sectors alike.
In a practical sense, fishing like all pursuits is changing and the dynamic of coming together has fundamentally changed.
The internet and all forms of media have heavily influenced fishing for a good while now. The narrative has always been pre y positive. But the winds of change are blowing and that narrative may become hard to define. As regulations lead to more people dissociated from the environment and interacting less with nature, sadly they are less likely to care for it into the future.
Hold em up boys!
FEATURE
Wet pursuit
As a recreational lobby, fishers need to ensure they are not locked out or scorned for their passion. This also means that recreational fishers need to be viewed as custodians of the environment and an economically powerful lobby group within political speres. It is impossible to envision just how this might occur but at the end of the day, it all comes back to the magnetising pull of fishing. Despite many other fads and trends coming and going, fishing tends to hold a lofty position amongst the social fabric of our society. And it is up to us to ensure the Nay-sayers never get the upper hand in their quest to past fishing in the annals of history.
So wrapping up following another spectacular day on the water building a catch of wild barramundi, if warms my heart to hear the days festivities recounted. A lucky capture, a horrible cast, a slip on the deck, a burnt thumb and unadulterated joy at having landed the biggest fish. The yellow jersey changes hands again, the insults fly in all directions and we prepare for bed, awaiting a new dawn to get out and do it all again amongst friends. Comradery and a pastime we all love is the glue that binds us.

Taking care of taxes
Meet the business built for tradie business growth
LET’S BE HONEST tradies, bookkeeping isn’t why we’re on the tools.
Tradies spend decades perfecting their craft, and Michael Gallagher at Tax for Tradies has been perfecting his for more than a decade.
To keep pace with the financial diversity of the modern tradie, Michael and his team founded Tax for Tradies.
“I recognised quickly that there was a need and an opportunity to help trades persons with business advice and their financial record keeping in addition to their taxation compliance work,” he said.
“Tradies were professional at their trades. But they were damaging their financial success by poor record keeping, lack of planning
and budgeting.
“They were falling behind in their taxation compliance obligations.”
CHEQUES AND BALANCES
Based at University Hill in Bundoora to Melbourne’s north, Michael works along with his elite team –Operations Manager Ross Walker and Administration Manager Melissa Wright.
As the portfolios of tradies become more complex, Tax for Tradies has been at the forefront and delivering some of the best insight into how tradies can be er handle their finances.
“The business has grown steadily over the years, but it is surging now,” Michael said.
“It was always my objective to respect each
client and ensure that each client feels special.
“The mo o of the firm is ‘whatever it takes’ so the clients’ issues are our issues in the firm. We go the extra mile to satisfy the needs of our clients with a ‘sense of urgency’.”
MOVING WITH THE TIMES
Gone are the days of record keeping through a collection of stapled receipts, and Tax for Tradies knows the top tricks and tools tradies can equip themselves with to remain ahead of the curve.
“Our services offering includes record keeping software through tradies using their phones,” Michael explained.
“They take a picture of their receipt/invoice and
send it to a predetermined email address where we can download and allocate the purchase to the correct expenses account.
“There are no more shoe boxes full of receipts. The hub of receipts is permanent, and it acts as an effective ATO taxation audit defence mechanism.”
Tax is one thing, but Michael said a particular strength of Tax for Tradies is providing super support, so to speak.
“One of our strengths at Tax for Tradies is in Superannuation,” Michael said.
“The ATO permits large deductions for money paid into Superannuation.
Many tradies use SMSFs as vehicles to build a property empire.
“We assist with establishing the concrete formwork (the correct structure to hold the property) and the maintenance work (all the financial accounts, audit and tax work).”
GROUND UP
It doesn’t ma er whether it’s day one of a tradie’s apprenticeship, or they’ve operated their SME for decades, Tax for Tradies caters its expertise to all career stages.
“We follow tradies through their apprenticeships to being a fully qualified employees to becoming self-employed.
“We advise on their trading structures when self-employed not just from a ‘taxation perspective’ but from an ‘asset protection’ perspective.
“We encourage separation of their business from their personal assets where there are personal assets that require protection such as the family home.”

Civil construction in focus at Converge 2025
AS THE PEAK BODY for Victoria’s civil contractors, CCF Victoria represents 460 member businesses and employs 45,000 professionals who deliver close to $22 billion in public and private infrastructure each year. Alongside strong advocacy, the organisation paves the way in skills development through specialised training and apprenticeships, equipping the workforce for Victoria’s evolving infrastructure needs.
This mission aligns with Converge 2025’s agenda – gathering industry leaders to tackle pressing challenges. With infrastructure budgets under tight strain, Kinross views the event as a timely stage to champion industry led solutions.
“Converge 2025 can be a catalyst for positive change, enabling our industry to infl uence policy se ings that support governments at all three levels to achieve their
infrastructure objectives,” she said.
CCF Victoria’s participation at Converge is part of a broader effort to amplify civil construction’s voice.
“The work our highly skilled contractor members do is all around creating safe and connected communities by building sustainable civil infrastructure for current and future generations,” Kinross said.
“By actively and collaboratively engaging with government and industry partners on major projects and ongoing infrastructure maintenance, we can achieve common goals of building vibrant, liveable cities, suburbs and communities in all parts of the state.”
At Converge 2025, CCF Victoria aims to raise awareness among decision-makers –particularly in government – about the pivotal role of civil contractors, and to
unify the industry’s voice.
“CCF Victoria is pleased to be reactivating the Victorian Civil Construction Industry Alliance (VCCIA), an initiative we founded 20 years ago to strengthen the sector through a diverse group of niche interest groups, member associations and peak bodies,” Kinross said.
“We are equally pleased to see several alliance members – AustStab, Municipal Works Australia and Australian Flexible Pavement Association –also supporting Converge 2025 as Association Partners.”
While indispensable, the civil construction industry faces mounting pressures. As Kinross explains, “Despite many reasons to be excited and hopeful for the future of civil construction, our industry continues to face significant headwinds, particularly in Victoria, with a contracting state budget that forecasts
reduced spending on infrastructure, in a bid to rein in soaring public debt. Add to that ongoing issues around workforce shortages, continuing cuts to skills training and apprenticeships funding delivered by independent RTOs, complex IR issues, and a volatile and polarising political and policy climate, it’s possible to appreciate the work we still have to do.”
At Converge 2025, CCF Victoria’s message is clear: construction priorities cannot be planned and delivered in isolation.
“The government needs to understand it is falling increasingly short of its current targets for homes and will ultimately fail in this endeavour unless it prioritises civil construction and the enabling infrastructure that contractors deliver,” Kinross said.
Sustainable civil infrastructure, such as roads and bridges, connects communities and provides the foundations for cities, towns and suburbs
“For any contractor, large or small, and every project engineer or LGA procurement professional with a stake in construction infrastructure, this is our opportunity to ‘converge’, to unite and demonstrate how our industry can deliver national priorities such as housing and energy.
“You can’t have homes, energy and utilities without the enabling infrastructure that helps bring it all online.”
Key themes at Converge 2025 will include the role of enabling infrastructure in government policy, avenues for civil contractors to adjust to shifting national priorities, the value of industry alliances in linking civil and vertical construction, and strategies for achieving sustainable infrastructure delivery while keeping public debt in check. The future landscape of Victoria’s civil construction sector will also be a central topic of discussion.

You should look at your trading structure if you operate a small business. Try to not give personal guarantees. Be aware to whom you give personal guarantees.
SET UP YOUR OWN SUPER FUND (SMSF )
Consider se ing up your own Self-Managed Superannuation Fund (SMSF) to buy property. Assets within a super fund including SMSFs are protected from creditors. At retirement, there is no capital gains tax payable on the sale of properties within the SMSF where the SMSF is in pension phase. TRADIE PROFILE
Between the (New)Lines
Phi and the gang at Newline Painting
With a quick ascent in the painting trade, Phi Dang has already made a name for himself with his business, Newline Painting.
AFTER ONLY two years of being a painter, Phi Dang grew his business to employ fi ve people, and has taken on more of a management role.
“I’m off the tools for now, but I am running the behind the scenes of the business even more so,” Phi said.
Phi focuses on spearheading the sales and communications side of the business. His pivot from real estate to the
painting industry came after identifying a gap in the industry in Victoria.
“In 2014 I was organising painters for my parent’s.
I was only 19 years old, but the experience with the painters was really bad, no shows, slow communication, and vague quotes,” Phi said.
“I kept thinking of ways in which the painting process could have been be er.”
Determined to change the painting industry, Phi spent six years learning marketing, sales and people management to prepare himself to go into painting full time.
“It was all self taught,” Phi said.
“I was working in real
estate to build a pipeline for painting work.”
FINDING THE RIGHT TEAM
One of the biggest challenges for Phi, was finding the right painters to join his team.
“Being able to find other people to deliver my vision was diffi cult at first,” Phi said.
“Finding the right people with the right a itude just took time. A lot of trial and error.”
Three years into the painting industry, and Newline Painting is known for their residential work and heritage restorations.
“A lot of our work is in the South Yarra, Hawthorn
and Port Phillip council area,” Phi said.
Phi credits his mentor and friend, Daniel Tate, for showing him the ropes in the industry.
“I reached out to Daniel on Seek back in 2017. I told him my business plans and we’ve been friends ever since,” Phi said.
“He has helped me navigate the industry and has been a great support.”
EMBRACING TECHNOLOGY
Phi has embraced technology into his business, and encourages other painters in the industry to do the same.
“We’ve gone heavily into the digital marketing and optimising our systems through that,” Phi said.
“There’s way more consistency and be er communication with our customers.”
Embracing online platforms has completely transformed Phi’s business.
“It sets us apart from the competition,” Phi said.
“I would encourage all business to do the same.”
By investing in social media marketing, Phi believes that being visual to customers helps with trust and accountability.
“There is a paper trail. We are a real company, and we won’t just disappear,” Phi said.
“We can be seen and accounted for. It makes a huge different to how our customers view us.”

2025 Bright Ideas grant winners
SUPPORTING innovation and ‘bright ideas’ is an integral part of the National Association of Women in Construction’s (NAWIC) work to create more equitable industry by fostering cultural change.
NAWIC offers two Bright Ideas Grants – one for individuals and one for businesses – which
Cathryn Greville, CEO of NAWIC
provide seed funding to support change initiatives aimed at a racting, retaining and advancing women in construction.
With this funding, recipients are able to launch new business ventures, initiatives or ideas which have a positive impact for the sector, ultimately seeing innovation get off the ground.
This year’s NAWIC Bright Ideas Grants have been awarded to an awareness raising careers website portal and a bold work experience initiative aiming to break down barriers.
The grants serve as an important way to actively support innovative projects that a ract women to the construction industry and ensure it is
clear they have a strong place in it.
We need more than 400,000 new workers over the next 5 years, and we are barely touching the full talent pool with only 12.4 per cent women overall, and only 3.4 per cent representation of women in the trades.
Our focus must be on building a sector that people – of all genders, races, ages, strengths and abilities – choose to join and stay.
To do so, we must tackle the culture of the sector head-on.
Embedding sustainable and wide-spread cultural change necessarily requires different perspectives and ideas to be brought to the table and involved in solution design and implementation.
Contributions should be sought from across the sector and those impacted by it.
Sometimes a bright
idea just needs a bit of a leg up to come to fruition and generate significant positive outcomes.
We see this time and time again with our Bright Ideas Grants.
BRIGHT IDEAS INDIVIDUAL GRANT
Polly Bri en from Victoria has earned the $30,000 Bright Ideas Individual Grant which will fund the launch of her LinkUpCareers website directory.
Stemming from Polly’s lived experience coming into the sector, and the significant challenge we face in a racting and retaining young professionals, this project focuses on:
• raising awareness of the construction industry and its link to STEM careers among educators and students
• challenging genderrelated job stereotypes
• facilitating connections
between educators, students and industry representatives • providing a platform for women to share their career journeys and experiences with students.
According to Polly, at the root of a raction and retention issues is a lack of awareness about career pathways among educators and students.
“Gender-related job stereotypes are deeply ingrained but educators can have a significant infl uence on their students’ career decisions. It’s about encouraging young minds to see that science, technology, engineering, and maths don’t always wear lab coats — sometimes, they

wear hard hats,” she said.
“I’m delighted to receive the Bright Ideas Grant to establish this networking directory so educators can easily invite women in construction into the classroom to promote those ‘lightbulb moments’ about career pathways.”
BRIGHT IDEAS BUSINESS GRANT
Amarapave Pty Ltd, also based in Victoria, has been awarded the $20,000 Bright Ideas Business Grant to support the rollout of Pathways into Paving — a practical, purpose-led program designed to provide real, paid experience for individuals who are often overlooked due to a lack of industry exposure or
prior experience. The program aims to break down barriers for women and non-binary people entering the asphalt paving industry. Through hands-on, site-based placements, supported by one-onone mentoring and wraparound care, the program offers an entry point into the asphalt paving trade.
Amarapave Managing Director Jenika Stubelj said this initiative not only addresses the access gap faced by underrepresented individuals, but also demonstrates how targeted, values-driven programs can support workforce development and social procurement
Bright Ideas Individual Grant Winner - Polly Bri en
goals across major infrastructure projects in Victoria.
“Having the opportunity to help someone get their foot in the door in our trade gives them that ability to combat the standard knock-back comment of not having any experience for the role,” she said.
“Participants will be guided and supported throughout the process to build the confidence, skills and connections needed to pursue long-term employment.
“I’m thrilled to receive the Bright Ideas Grant.
I’m excited to see the long-term impact that this grant will have through enabling women and nonbinary people to enter our industry.”
Awarding these grants to worthy recipients is one of the highlights of
NAWIC’s work, and we are excited to see their innovative projects come to light – turning their commitment to improving the experiences of women coming into the construction industry into reality.

Trevor Schwenke CEO, WorldSkills Australia
Over the course of three exciting, actionpacked days, young champions from across the country will come together to compete, create, and showcase their skills across more than 60 skilled trades and professions. From traditional trades like bricklaying and plumbing, to modern specialisations like beauty therapy and programming, this is where the best of the best will go head-to-head — not just for medals, but to benchmark their abilities against national standards and set new benchmarks
of excellence in their chosen industries. But this event is about more than just competition. It’s a celebration of possibility. For young people still wondering “what’s next?” — those who haven’t yet found their path or are unsure what careers are out there — this event can be a game changer. Seeing others their age mastering practical, hands-on skills, using industry-standard tools and equipment, and thriving in careers that demand precision, creativity, and innovation can be incredibly inspiring.
Sometimes, the simple act of seeing someone in action is enough to spark curiosity, passion, and ambition. Because sometimes, seeing really is believing.
