Here's hoping the sky is blue on August 1 and 2 when the 2025 Casino Truck Show rolls around.

Image: Prime Creative Media

Welcome

to Issue 521 of your Deals on Wheels Magazine

As this edition of Deals on Wheels hits the streets the drivers of at least 550 trucks will sorting out their week to land in the regional country town of Casino on Friday, August 1, to be part of the 2025 North Coast Petroleum Casino Truck Show.

Last year's event was so popular the organisers have had to put a cap on the numbers of trucks in the parade, and also in attendance, to ensure there's a happy balance between standing on the side of the road watching the trucks roll by, and having time to explore the balance of the truck show exhibits, enjoy the music, and cheer on the winners at the end of the afternoon. All before the rodeo kicks off, with gates opening from 4pm. Across the country, every other weekend

throughout the year, trucking enthusiasts and local communities are working together to showcase the machinery that keeps the country moving, while raising a bit of money for a worthy cause and enticing visitors to drop by and enjoy the spectacle of a truck show.

For Deals on Wheels readers there's a keen interest in the vast array of brands on show, and a shared passion to see what can be done with an older truck given a concept and the desire to maintain a piece of road transport history for another generation to come.

Bigger shows, like Casino, also offer the chance to see some of the latest offerings from suppliers to the transport industry who help to keep trucks safe, cabins comfortable and the industry informed on the latest issues and challenges being experienced.

As we enter a new financial year, for the new and used truck markets, the tightening of the freight market, lower prices, higher costs and increased competition is having an impact.

Some big fleets have bowed out and their equipment is now being sold in large batches.

Mid-sized fleets are being cautious, new truck sales slowing, as they watch and wait.

For secondhand buyers, all this means there's good buying to be had.

Isuzu

expands its footprint with new Rockhampton site

With a completely new range of trucks to bring to market in the second half of 2025 Australia's biggest truck seller is expanding

Central Isuzu in Rockhampton has opened the doors to a brand-new dealership site in Parkhurst offering customers the latest in sales, service and parts at its expansive site in central Queensland.

Moving from its previous site on Gomersall Rd, the new 8,000 sqm site is situated at Barton Court and now offers a string of new features including a 1,185.41 sqm workshop with vehicle servicing bays and a fully stocked parts department.

It also features ground floor showroom, customer lounge and office space of about 400 sqm, another 190 sqm of office space on the first floor and a large scale wash bay to clean off the Central Queensland dust.

Central Isuzu general manager Simon Harris says after 10 years at the old site, the new location is worth the wait.

“From a capacity point of view, we’ve doubled the size of the workshop and for the team on the floor and indeed our customers – the entire facility is modern, comfortable and what you’d expected of the number one brand in the country,” he says.

With more Australian truck owners turning to OEM dealers for their ongoing service and maintenance needs, Harris says that customer experience was a key driver behind establishing the Parkhurst site.

“This expansion is all about improving efficiency in ensuring the customer has their truck turned around quickly and back out delivering for their businesses,” he says.

“Customers expect not only decent amenities, but also a well-stocked parts department, which we now have in spades with this new facility.”

IAL director Ben Lasry says the new site is a benefit for the region and for local businesses reliant of trucks and road transport.

Isuzu has over 70 dealer sites across the country, and I have to say, Rockhampton has one of the most modern in the network,” he says.

“The growth of Isuzu in Queensland comes off the back of operations such as Central Isuzu and with an eye on delivering to the customer, this site has been thoughtfully developed to achieve exactly that.”

Dealer principal Mark Dobson says the new models are set to be a hit in and around Rockhampton.

“I witnessed the trucks in Melbourne earlier in the year and Isuzu blew everyone away at the Brisbane Truck Show,” he says.

“In a nutshell – super impressive!”

“Some really great things are coming our way, which gives us reassurance for the future with the brand and the new model range.

DOLLY’S

Dream truck

In a stand against bullying, Dolly’s Dream organisation was founded and now there's a truck to match

Words: Tiane Gavillucci

"Speak, even if your voice shakes," was one of the last things Dolly Everett wrote.

Tragically, in 2018 Dolly took her own life at the age of 14 after ongoing bullying and cyberbullying.

“Through the grief and heartbreak, her parents Kate and Tick Everett made a decision to create ‘Dolly’s Dream’, to prevent another family from going through this devastation,” says Sally Sweeney, Head of Dolly’s Dream.

“They didn't want any young person to feel like suicide was their only option, and they didn't want any other family to be left with such heartbreak and loss,” Sally says.

“So since then, we've created a national movement against bullying, and our role at Dolly's Dream is to ensure that young people and families, parents, carers, schools and communities have the support they need to help stop bullying before it even starts. And if someone is being bullied, there are support services there to help them through as well.”

Dom Shanahan from Shanahan’s Livestock Transport has made the decision to come on board as a community business partner with Dolly’s Dream and have dedicated their 60th Kenworth truck to represent the organisation.

“We devoted our 50th truck to another important cause, so for number 60, we wanted to once again, raise awareness,” Dom says.

“We've got a lot of drivers and workers within our system with kids that may come across bullying and I thought this organisation was an important one to be involved with moving forward.”

When it came time to roll out the Shanahan’s 60th rig, Dom made the decisions to abandon their usual green branding and go with Dolly blue.

The T909 sports the same design, but with a blue stripe that has butterflies throughout it instead, with a support line, a bullying support number and the Dolly’s Dream logo.

“Moving away from our colours was a big

decision, but it wasn’t a hard one, not when it’s for a good cause,” Dom says.

And though it’s only cruised the roads for a few weeks, organisations have reached out asking if Dom’s truck is available to have at events, meaning the truck is doing its job in terms of spreading awareness and leading families who are in need toward receiving the right help.

Trucks like Shanahan’s don’t just carry cattle – they carry conversations and get people to share a story of their own.

As a father of six, Dom can empathise on the effects bullying can have on children and highlights the dangers technology can contribute.

“You hear some sad stories of kids getting bullied just for no reason at all, and now with phones and social media, there’s no way for these kids to escape,” he says.

“When my generation was younger, a few of us may have gotten bullied, but there was at least some sort of reprieve when we got home, now it’s very different.”

What happened to Dolly sparked a movement, that no child should feel hopeless,

and no family should carry that kind of grief alone.

Sally understands that pain intimately, not just as a parent, but as someone who has been shoulder to shoulder with the Everett’s since the establishment of this organisation.

The grassroots organisation is steeped in rural and remote Australia, where isolation can magnify and services are often far away – however the community has remained a strong support for them.

“Bullying is something that has touched everyone in one way or another,” Sally says.

“We speak to people in their 60s and 70s who remember being bullied, the bully’s name and how it made them feel.

“The scars are long lasting, and they can really change the trajectory of somebody’s life.”

So, what’s being done about this?

Extremely remote communities have mentioned how hard it is to receive the right service, sometimes having to drive three hours to visit a GP, who then informs them it will be a 12-month wait before their child can see a counsellor.

Shanahan's offered up their 60th truck's paintwork to promote the Dolly’s Dream cause

Dolly’s famous line, “speak even if your voice shakes”

Blue butterflies make up the blue design of the truck
Dolly’s Dream and its purpose is printed all over the truck and the trailer too

“That’s far too late. These issues are happening now, and we need to support them now,” she says.

“So, we partnered with Kids HelpLine and Parentline to set up our Dolly’s Dream support line. It’s for parents or any young person experiencing bullying. They can call or web chat and receive free qualified counselling from a professional. And it’s 24/7.”

A new program Dolly’s Dream is currently working on is one associated with Dolly’s story – to ensure children have the opportunity to enjoy education as any other student would when transitioning from a rural property to a boarding school education.

“Kids deserve to have a happy, safe childhood and enjoy their schooling years, not suffer through it,” she says.

“Our focus will always remain on the rural, regional and remote community. Being geographically isolated, it’s important to nurture our community, listen to what they tell us and speak to the young people it affects.

“We want to be that support service that is a highly trusted anti-bullying organisation

that supports young people and their mental health.”

Dolly’s Dream also hosts a Do it for Dolly Day, which is a massive fundraiser and awareness campaign.

The fundraising allows the organisation to design and develop programs that go straight back into the community to address a real need.

Their school workshops talk to kids from prep to year 12 about kindness, self-worth, mental health, online safety and bullying versus banter. And it’s not just about the students.

They support teachers in mental health training and run parent workshops also, equipping communities with tools to intervene before bullying takes root.

“We like to ensure that bullying is everyone’s problem to address, not just the child’s,” she says.

“We also have a parent hub. When Kate and Tick were trying to support Dolly with the issues she was having at school, Kate said she used to spend hours online, searching

Tick Everett and Dom Shanahan in front of the Dolly’s truck

what she can do as a mother to help. She said it would have been so much easier if she had one place to go, and that’s when we set up the hub.”

A beautiful truck, to represent a heartfelt cause.

The Dolly's Dream Bullying Support Line can be reached by calling 0488 881 033

It includes regularly posted articles about signs to look out for if your child is being bullied, how to navigate a conversation around bullying, how to speak to the school, how much screentime is okay, is snapchat safe and a lot more.

To make matters even more accessible, they launched the Beacon app for parents and carers, with over 600 articles and videos about online safety on apps, gaming, cyber bullying and how to support someone being bullied.

As a mother, this organisation and Dolly’s story really hits home for Sally, who aims to protect kids at schools and prevent families going through what the Everett’s had to endure.

“You leave your kid at the school gates, and you trust that they’re going to be okay. I’ve been at Dolly’s Dream for seven years and the stories that I hear from young kids, parents

and teachers are really horrific,” she says.

“The bullying is so personal and brutal. It's 24/7, the kids are bullied at school, they come home and then it's online, there's no respite! And so I'm deeply committed to making sure that we are protecting young people from this. No one deserves it.

“It's such a simple thing to be kind, it can change the outcome of somebody's day, let alone life.

“I’ve known Kate, Tick and their other daughter Meg for quite some time now. They are such a loving, caring and close family. If this tragedy can happen to them, it can happen to anyone.”

Dolly’s Dream truck is a symbol of this message and honours her memory. It’s a reminder that even in the loneliest corners of the country, someone is fighting to make sure no young person ever feels alone again.

“We’re so thankful to the trucking community,” Sally says.

“Hopefully there will be more Shanahan’s who want to come on board with us and brand up their trucks across Australia.”

Tipping IT SIDEWAYS

When space is tight a side tipper trailer can be the perfect solution

Picture your favourite heavy truck pulling a road train of tipping trailers filled with dirt or gravel and there’s every chance those trailers will be set up to dump their loads out the side.

The side tipping action on the new trailer is perfect for getting the job done

For mining, construction and waste management industries the side tipper trailer has proven popular for its ability to allow quick and controlled unloading, without excessive manoeuvring on the part of the driver.

The trailers are built with a hydraulic system that tilts the trailer bed to one side, allowing trucks to pull up next to the delivery point, drop the load on target, and simply drive off.

In Melbourne the team at Stonestar Trailers have mastered the art of the side tipper with the release of their 2025 Stonestar Gravel Tipper trailer.

This quad axle side tipper has a 60 ton aggregate trailer mass (ATM), 34 ton gross trailer mass (GTM) with a tare weight of about 14.5 ton.

Other 2025 Stonestar Side Tipper features include:

• 6mm floor

• 5mm wall

• K H itch Axle and airbag suspension with front lift up axle

• LED Light

• 50mm Jost King pin

• 2-speed landing leg

• Toolbox

• Side Tipper which works with PTO from Prime Mover

• Full road train brake system - no ring feeder

• F lexi Guard with Stonestar mudflaps

• A ll safety signs

• 1 1 R tyres with 10 stud steel wheels

• A spare wheel

• 1 year warranty for the Trailer

• Electric tarp included for free (No Charge for this so no warranty)

The trailers are finished in the Stonestar factory in Melbourne and delivered with an estimated time of arrival of four weeks from the date of sales and deposit.

Registration and pick up are to be organised by the customer.

Stonestar’s Richard Meinking says the demand for side tippers is on the rise as major construction and mining projects continue to progress around the country.

Meinking says Stonestar is able to offer competitive prices as it designs its trailers to meet local demand, then imports the components from abroad and assembles them in Melbourne to comply with Australian design regulations.

With well over a decade of trailer manufacturing behind them, the Stonestar team offer a huge range of trailer options including tilt-sliders, low loaders, deck wideners, vacuum sewerage tankers and more.

The popular trailer manufacturer is part of the Stonestar group, which started out as a wheel and tyre wholesaler more than two decades ago, and has been evolving and expanding alongside the market ever since.

As well as trailers, wheels and tyres, the group also manufactures caravans and creates parts for heavy machinery, solar and wind infrastructure and the maritime industry.

Stonestar Trailers can be found at 42-48 Redwood Drive, Dingley Village in Victoria. Phone 03 9580 9788.

New heavy truck sales in Australia continue to remain slow, down from the record levels seen in 2023 and 2024, with the month of June just past typical of the trend seen year-to-date. June 2025 saw sales down in all truck segments, compared to June last year according to the latest T-Mark sales data. However, despite the slowing market, sales remain the third best on record.

The total number of heavy vehicles (Light Duty Trucks and Vans,

Medium Duty Trucks and Heavy Duty Trucks) sold in June 2025 totalling 4,888 units, was down on the record June 2024 sales of 5,461.

At the halfway point of calendar year 2025, total sales sit at 22,582, down on last year’s record of 25,698, a reduction of 12.1 per cent.

However, this first half year result is the third best on record, only bettered by sales in 2023 and 2024.

Truck Industry Council CEO Tony McMullan says the slowing of truck sales this year was not unexpected.

“Last year the sales market for trucks was strong, in fact, it was a record year representing the third year in a row where the sales record was broken year on year,” McMullan says.

“For year 2025, while it was hoped that sales would remain strong, it is not surprising to see the market coming off these highs, a federal election year, tight economic times, a lessening of demand for product and economic and general uncertainty being the key determinants for the drop in sales.

“To date for the first six months of year 2025 TIC T-Mark database is recording sales as being down 12 per cent, on average, across all heavy vehicle segments.

“It is hard to predict the next six months, although it is fair to assume that uncertainty will remain and that sales will not be as strong as were seen in 2024.”

Heavy Duty

The Heavy Duty truck segment continued its year-to-date contraction in June with 1,481 deliveries for June, down 18.5 per cent (335 trucks) over the same month in 2024.

The first six months of 2025 have produced 7,143 sales versus 8,769 sales to the end of June 2025, a reduction of 18.5 per cent year-to-date.

At the end of June, the sales leaderboard, year to date, is: Kenworth (1,655), Isuzu (1,191), Volvo (1,167), Scania (551), MercedesBenz (455), Fuso (377), Hino (375), Mack (331), DAF (254), UD Trucks (236), Iveco (209), Man (156), Western Star (77), Freightliner (61), Dennis Eagle (47) and Foton Mobility (1).

Medium Duty

The Medium Duty segment saw 764 trucks delivered last month, down 13.9 per cent (-123 trucks) over June 2024.

Year-to-date Medium Duty truck sales have slowed by 8.4 per cent, with 3,698 deliveries to the end of June 2025, 339 fewer

when compared to the 2024 half year result.

The Medium Duty sales leaderboard, year to date, to the end of June is: Isuzu (1,797), Hino (1,246), Fuso (427), Hyundai (59), Iveco (50), UD Trucks (37), Mercedes-Benz (33), MAN (22), Volvo (19), DAF (8).

Light Duty

The end of June 2025 saw an overall decline in light duty truck sales of 13.1 per cent, or 941 less light trucks, for the first half of 2025 when compared to the first half of 2024.

For June 1,332 light duty trucks were delivered, down 12.3 per cent (-186 vehicles) from June 2024.

In number terms, 6,222 light duty trucks were delivered in the first six months of this year.

The sales leaderboard, year-to-date to June 30 is: Isuzu (3,308), Fuso (932), Hino (515), Iveco (483), Fiat (355), Renault (285), Mercedes-Benz (139), Hyundai (86), LDV (70), Ford (29), Foton Mobility (12), Volkswagen (8).

Growth GENERATIONAL

For Melbourne’s Gorski and Papaluca families 2025 is a year to celebrate

Two generations, 50 years, 40 years.

Those three concepts are at the heart of a big 12 months for the families behind Gorski Engineering and Patlin Heavy Haulage.

Way back in 1975 Ken Gorski started to make tipper trailers in Melbourne to meet the demands of local transport businesses.

In 1976, 19-year-old Pat Papaluca was starting to make a living completing earthmoving and house foundation jobs when he bought his first tip truck.

The tipper on that truck was a Gorski creation.

After a few years hauling dirt Pat left the

industry, but when he returned in 1985, it was Gorski he asked to build the bodies he needed for the tipping work his new business was taking on.

Now, 40 years down the track, with Ken and Pat both a little less hands on in the businesses they started, the second generation of the Papaluca and Gorski families are working together to support each other’s success.

As you could imagine, a lot has changed in the 50 years since Jaws first hit the cinema, Bohemian Rhapsody was launched on the airwaves and Gough Whitlam was given his marching orders as Prime Minister of Australia.

Technology and materials have advanced, the population of the country has almost doubled, and where major projects used to be about roads and bridges, it’s now tunnels and wind turbines.

One thing that has stood the test of time for Gorksi Engineering and Patlin Heavy Haulage is a shared passion for partnerships and customer service.

What started as Patlin Transport evolved to become the Patlin Heavy Haulage business of today, which Pat says has about 15 Gorski combinations operating under its heavy haulage tipper service.

“Back in 1985 we were lucky to establish

Images:

The early days of Patlin Transport

partnerships with a few bigger groups in the industry, such as Delta Group and Winslow, so we started getting tippers from Gorski. We’ve been very grateful to have these longstanding customers as it’s allowed us to keep going back to Gorski.”

As it celebrates 40 years in operation, Pat’s oldest son Joe and his youngest son Steven now run a lot of the operations from the business’ home base in Somerton, Victoria.

Pat says the Papaluca family’s passion for service and reliability has been central to its success over the past four decades.

“I believe service is a big thing and it’s something we pride ourselves on,” he says.

“We aren’t the cheapest in the industry, but I believe we give the best service and reliability.

“Sadly, I don’t think service counts as much as it did, with prices being a major factor nowadays.

“However, we will always strive to provide the best possible service for all of our customers and we still pride ourselves on our maintenance through a strict program I’m proud of – I like to always send my drivers out in safe trucks and that won’t change.”

Talking to Deals on Wheels about Gorksi Engineering’s 50th anniversary milestone general manager Paul Baker says it’s a milestone worth celebrating.

“With business requirements and legislation changing so much over the years, we’re so proud of being able to constantly evolve and adapt while always growing,” Baker says.

“It’s all about the engineering we have – we have the best engineering team that adapts, designs around problems and fits solutions tailored to each operator we have as a customer.

“While we are a volume builder, we still custom design and provide bespoke options –we can change key dimensions to get an extra 500kg in payload for our operators, and we enjoy this personable approach.

The nature of Gorski has always been

around business-to-business transactions –and in the case of Patlin, this has led to family to family transactions.

On the Gorski side, Amelie, Tim, Jeremy and Paul all form the next generation of the Gorski family, dealing with Joe, Steve and Matt Papaluca.

From humble beginnings, both businesses now offer a vast array of services.

Patlin Heavy Haulage is well known for its work on projects, including the movement of wind turbines, alongside its crane trucks, tilt trays, tippers and recovery services.

Gorski has recently expanded into Queensland through a warehouse and service centre in Yatala/Stapylton that accompanies its 4,000sqm factory in Campbellfield and the family business is looking to continue introducing new technology to satisfy the needs of long-term customers like Patlin.

“While the 50-year anniversary is a good time to reflect on the past, we also want to celebrate the present and prepare for our future,” Baker says.

“We’re looking towards our growth in Queensland and our aluminium productions, as well as new concepts like A-doubles, to make this year a very exciting one.”

Rounds MAKING THE

Deals on Wheels loves to find out about the people behind the trucks and this month we met Luke Murr, Nick Pocock and Shane Mitchell

Words: Tiane Gavillucci

‘Huddy’s Hideout’

Where most people splurge on a boat, jet ski or a car, Luke Murr bought a Kenworth T950, and started his own business, Huddy’s Haulage.

Here’s Huddy’s Hideout in all its glory.

Image: Luke Murr

The famous convoy four.

Image: Luke Murr

“My grandfather was a truckie when I was a kid, so I’ve always been passionate about them, he says.

“People like to spend their money on finer things, but I went and bought a truck, as stupid as that sounds.”

So, before Huddy’s, Luke was behind the wheel but is now working alongside his wife Courtney running the family owned transport company based in Townsville.

Luke’s picky about which trucks he adds to his fleet. He enjoys the traditional colours – red and white – with beautiful painted scrollwork. That’s his ideal truck.

“Before I had my own, I always envisioned myself having red and white trucks,” he says.

“I love a white truck with a red chassis, or red scrolls on a white truck and vice versa.

“I wrapped that all into the first truck I bought, then everything else followed.”

Each white rig was bought second hand and “basic”. Luke prefers it this way so that he can do them up to suit the rest of his classic fleet.

Red chassis’, white bodies and classic

scrollwork. It’s a look that calls back to the old school Aussie rigs of decades past.

Every truck that joins the Huddy fleet gets this treatment, as well as a name from home.

There’s the little red K200 named after the baby of the family, ‘Mad Maddix’.

There’s ‘Miss Addison’, a slick and neat 2015 Kenworth T409 and then there’s the one that started it all; ‘Huddy’s Hideout’, named after his son Hudson, the inspiration behind both the company name and the Kenworth T950.

Then there’s the newest addition, still unnamed and waiting to earn its stripes.

These four rigs made quite the entrance at the Convoy for the Cure on May 25, and this year was the family’s sixth year in a row attending.

“The kids all got a truck named after them, so they get excited about it,” he says.

“We haven't been affected by anything the convoy stands for personally, but we just get behind it.

“It’s a great way to raise money, spread awareness and it’s a good outing for kids and families. Truckies love to get out there, clean

up their truck and feel the pride.”

And with the names of his children painted proudly on the side, Huddy’s traditional trucks made an impression to last a lifetime.

A working rig

This 2014 Western Star 4900 is not for show.

M&K Andrews Transport driver Nick Pocock assures Deals on Wheels that though it looks good, this truck is in and out of paddocks and quarries quite frequently.

It’s a rig that works hard, and Nick makes it look good while doing it.

With a Cummins EGR engine, the truck is built for side tipper work, however during harvest season, Nick works the 11-year-old rig as a road train tipper.

Yet, although the truck is mostly brushing its steel sides against quarry dust and has its boots in the mud, it gleams like it just rolled off a polished showroom floor.

“I wash and polish the truck and trailer weekly to keep it looking new,” Nick says.

“Throughout its years, it’s had very strict

Not only does it look good, it works hard – this Western Star works for

M&K Andrews Transport.

maintenance scheduled by the owner to keep it mechanically sound also.”

Bought second-hand, the truck had already seen life with two other drivers before Nick.

You can tell this rig is well looked after.

Image: Nick Pocock

Look at that mighty machine!

Image: Nick Pocock

But when it came into Nick’s hands, he gave it something it had never had before, care.

“It’s never been looked after as well as this,” he says.

As the truck ages, little maintenance fixes are always due.

The Western Star’s side lights have recently been rewired and red LEDs have been added underneath the cab and bunk for extra flare.

Its striking blue and white paint job is attention-grabbing to say the least, colours that will stand out on the road no doubt.

“It was originally painted this way, the boss has always liked the blue and white paint schemes,” he says.

A career in transport and life as a truckie is often inspired by family, and Nick finds himself behind the wheel thanks to his blood line.

“I’m a third-generation truckie, after my father, and grandfather.”

It’s a life that runs through his veins. It has been all he’s ever known and now he gets to sit in this monster rig for the foreseeable future.

Some trucks are born to show, but this one was born for the road, and under Nick’s care, it does both jobs and does it beautifully.

Scenic winners

Truckie Shane Mitchell watched on as his team at Dawson’s Haulage took home not one, but two unexpected awards at the Scenic Rim Truck Show on May 31.

“The boys were absolutely wrapped,” he says. “We did not expect any awards at all. We don't go to truck shows for awards, we go there for a good time.”

Along with their dazzling rigs, they brought along their own merchandise tent, where all the money made would go toward Dolly’s Dream, an organisation that aims to stop bullying and spread kindness.

“We don’t profit anything, it’s all for Dolly,” he says.

“It’s an organisation that caught our owner Graeme’s attention and we’ve supported them since 2019.

“It’s something Graeme felt he had to make a difference with, especially because it involves young kids and teenagers. It hit him quite hard, and he just wanted to do something to give back.”

For Shane, the Scenic Rim Truck Show was a first – but definitely not his last.

He rolled in with a lineup of four that turned heads: A T16, a K200, a C509 and a T909, ranging from brand new to about seven years old.

Each rig was part of the new design,

sporting a new splash of green replacing Dawson’s usual whites.

“The two green trucks were a bit of a shift. Just something to get away from the white for a little while,” he says.

“Then came the green trucks with the white stripes. Graeme wanted to shake up the design and do something a bit out of the ordinary.

“We've got a handful of green trucks and a handful of white trucks with the same design, just reverse colours.”

And the colour change made all the difference, enough to stand out in a sea of chrome and diesel and certainly enough to walk out with trophies they never chased, earning Best Under 12 Months Old and Best Under 5 to 10 Years Old.

But Shane’s transport story started long before the truck shows and trophies.

Shane’s been living the trucking life since he was a young man, with both his father and grandfather driving for the local council in New Zealand.

“It was in my blood, there was nothing else I was going to do,” he says.

“I'm just following in their footsteps, and I'm probably not very good at anything else.”

Having been a truckie for almost two decades, Shane has been at Dawson’s for nearly 10 of them, and his hard work is clearly paying off.

Marvellous

MANNUM

The town of Mannum came alive this winter for the South Australia Truck and Ute Show, where giant rigs turned heads

A thunder of rumbling rigs, polished to blinding perfection line up like gentle giants when the South Australia Truck and Ute Show breathes life into the quiet town of Mannum.

“Winter can be such a quiet time for rural communities and country towns,” event organiser Carol Carini says.

“Fifteen years ago, the Progress Association wanted to bring something special into Mannum, to give people a reason to come out here.”

And that’s how the show began.

What started as a simple idea to connect the trucking industry has grown into the region’s biggest annual event, pulling thousands of visitors and awe-inspiring trucks.

This year’s event, despite on and off rainfall and a few drivers called away for work, still saw nearly 70 trucks take over the main street.

“Normally we get over 85,” Carol says. “But even with fewer trucks, the turnout was amazing. I was walking around all day and kept seeing different faces. People came in waves – they’d wander through, grab a coffee or head to the pub, then new groups would come on in.”

And the trucks? Standouts. One a labour of love, another drowned in chrome and others gleaming in custom paintwork that exudes personality.

One fleet that snatched Carol’s attention was The Truck Factory’s which is known locally for the jaw dropping artistry on their vehicles.

“It’s hard to pick a favourite, they’re all pretty spectacular,” Carol says.

“The Truck Factory is a towing business and they’re graphics are just amazing. These trucks are the owner’s whole life; they take a lot of pride in their vehicles.

“The kids love it the most though. They just stare up at these massive trucks, and they’re not even as big as the tires.”

Besides trucks, a different vibe is just up the street, where utes and panel vans are on display.

There was also an artisan’s row where handmade crafts were showed off, a DJ spun some tunes, and a live band got everyone up and dancing.

Carol who started her days at 5am and didn’t stop till sunset, managed to find joy throughout an exhausting two-day event.

“I was running around everywhere trying to get everything sorted, so I saw the people wandering around with a smile, taking pictures in front of the trucks, it was just a really fun day,” she says.

But what really drives this event, is its impact on the town of Mannum. The money raised doesn’t go into anyone’s pockets but flows back into the community through grants.

“The community benefits 100 per cent from what the event puts on, and this is the biggest event in our town all year round,” she says.

“For example, we’ve helped buy a fridge for a kindergarten, built a helipad for the hospital, built a disabled picnic table in a reserve and much more.

“We really enjoy what we do and are all so happy with the outcome.”

Every organiser is a volunteer, every sponsor a vital partner.

And the team is already gearing up for their next big event on December 6 – the Christmas pageant – complete with a riverfront firework display launched from the barge and a street party.

If there is one thing Mannum knows how to do, it’s throwing an unforgettable event, so lock the start of June 2026 into your calendar, because the next one’s going to be even bigger.

TO CASINO

More than 500 trucks have registered to power into town on August 2

As this issue of Deals on Wheels hits the newsstands there’s just four days left until the North Coast Petroleum Casino Truck Show kicks off for another year.

The 2024 North Coast Petroleum Casino Truck Show broke all records, boasting 600 trucks and more than 30,000 attendees, generating an estimated $3.9 million into the local economy. Image: Casino Truck Show

This year’s festivities will begin on August 1 with a new Friday Night Lights event from 6pm in the Casino CBD presented by All American Custom Chrome.

Friday Night Lights will also feature live music from Thor Phillips, food and family fun as the local eateries stay open late to serve up their signature dishes for the town’s guests to enjoy.

The Friday night festivities are a prelude to the main game on Saturday, August 2, which kicks off at 10am with the Dawson’s Haulage Truck Parade rolling into the centre of town and adding extra chrome to a day of music, trucks, exhibitors, food and fun.

Organising Committee spokesman Darren Goodwin says the truck show team is gearing up for another great year.

Goodwin says the event is not just a

showcase of incredible rigs – it’s a celebration of the entire trucking industry and the people who keep it moving.

He also points out it could not happen without the support of the community and business.

“Without the support and generosity shown from our valued sponsors, our beloved Truck Show wouldn't be what it is and we thank them wholeheartedly,” Goodwin says.

“With 550 trucks expected – 200 of them parading through the streets of Casino – the North Coast Petroleum Casino Truck Show is one event you won't want to miss.”

Last year’s show attracted more than 30,000 people and was said to have injected about $3.9 million into the local economy.

Big hearted truckies

Richmond Valley Council’s general manager Vaughan Macdonald says the 2025 Show has a new charity partnership with Get Yourself Checked, a not-for-profit dedicated to

improving the health and wellbeing of men across Australia.

Macdonald says Get Yourself Checked is a new initiative founded by Mark Tobin, owner of Followmont Transport, and Brett Hanly, from Country Trucker Caps, with a mission of getting Aussie blokes to take charge of their health and get tested for prostate cancer.

He says as part of the charity’s awareness campaign, the trailers of a Kenworth B-double had become a rolling billboard, carrying the messages: 1 in six, Fight Prostate Cancer, and Get Yourself Checked. The Kenworth will be part of this year’s Truck Show.

“This collaboration marks a significant step in our ongoing commitment to giving back to the community and making a meaningful difference,” Macdonald says.

“We look forward to supporting Get Yourself Checked through various initiatives and engaging our team and community in this important work.

“Together, we can help bring about positive change for those who need it most.”

The auction of a high-quality, custom-made bar will help raise funds for Get Yourself Checked, as well as a number of local not-forprofit organisations.

The auction will take place on Saturday 2 August at the Mafeking Lamp roundabout at 2.45pm, just before the trophy presentation.

Donated by Queensland-based Moore Trailers, the 2.4 metre x 2.4 metre bar is made from steel, with mirror stainless ends, and resembles the rear end of a trailer. Valued at more than $8,000, the bar is ideal for various uses, including entertaining and recreational activities.

Passion POWERED PRODUCTIVITY

Collaboration and partnerships have kept this massive fleet rolling

Iconic New Zealand fleet Dynes Transport celebrates 54 years in business this year and stands as a proud family company and industry leader in its region.

to eventually become the country’s largest roadtrain operator with his Gulf Transport, Bulkhaul, Roadtrains of Australia and Powertrans businesses.

Dynes CEO Matt Horan:

“If our partners go the extra mile for us, we go the extra mile for them.”

Founded in the small town of Tapanui in West Otago in the South Island, but now based in Dunedin, Dynes became a 50/50 joint partner with the HW Richardson Group in 2016.

While HWR is New Zealand’s largest privately-owned transport business with around 1300 trucks, Dynes itself operates a large fleet, with the Paccar brands – Kenworth and DAF – dominating.

Dynes’ core haulage activities include dairy products, bulk woodchips, logging, bulk wine and grapes, and an array of other bulk products related to New Zealand’s primary sectors.

The history of Dynes Transport is worth sharing because it features two men – both named Jim – who went on to become iconic figures in the trucking industry.

The first steps

In 1969, aged just 20, twin brothers Jim and John Dynes took their first major step into the business world when they bought Cooper Transport, owned by Jim Cooper, in Tapanui.

The Dynes boys were too young to qualify for a bank loan, however Cooper offered to sell them his business while guaranteeing their loan until they turned 21.

Jim Cooper moved to Darwin in Australia

Both Dynes and Cooper forged formidable reputations in the industry, leaving wonderful legacies of innovation, great business accomplishments and invaluable industry advocacies.

Peter Dynes – Jim’s son – owns the business today (in partnership with HWR), with Matt Horan as the CEO and the first person outside the Dynes family to hold the operational reins.

Prior to joining Dynes seven years ago, Horan was general manager of New Zealand’s Pacific Fuel Haul, a member of the TIL Group.

‘Solution architects’

The values espoused by Dynes reflect the straight-talking approach of the company.

“Our value statement is not what we want to be but what we actually are,” Horan says.

“We want our people to think for themselves, make decisions, and we provide the environment for them to do that.”

The company talks about having “solution architects”, people who act like entrepreneurs and think outside the square because “we’re not just another transport company”.

Another value is being “nimble”, not overcomplicating the business as we “understand the value of agility”.

The importance of its people, who must be accountable, is also emphasised: “We look

after our people and their families, and our people look after our company.”

“We focus on logistics environments that are challenging,” Horan says.

“We go after the tough stuff…it’s about being productive and utilising our logistics expertise to provide custom packages that deliver high value for our customers.

“The reliability and performance of the gear we have at our fingertips means we can scale and do things other can’t, that’s why we’ve been able to grow our business and that’s why customers rely on us. It’s a combination of our people and our gear.”

Long-standing partnership

The start of Dynes’ partnership with Kenworth and Cummins dates back to the mid-70s when a W924 Kenworth powered by a small cam Cummins NTC350 was put into service.

“The Kenworth brand is important to us because of what it offers in terms of total life costs. The back half of an asset’s life matters most and that’s where Kenworth is strongest,” Horan says.

“The brand also plays a big part in attracting quality drivers, drivers who are looking for a premium product to drive because it’s their workplace.

“Our long-standing partnership with Kenworth and Cummins is a package deal that gives our drivers confidence. I’ve talked to numerous drivers who say they are at Dynes because we have the best of the best gear here and we don’t compromise on it.”

Horan expands on this stance to include another PACCAR brand too.

“DAF is a very useful platform in certain parts of our business that need good visibility, and it also caters for our older drivers with its European comfort.”

Trust is everything

“The mantra at Dynes is that if our partners go the extra mile for us, we go the extra mile for them. Loyalty to our partners is important especially when the going gets tough,” Horan says.

“Kenworth and Cummins have guided us through 50 years of business, through all the recessions and helped grow our business.

“Trust in partnership is everything, and we’ve got an awesome partnership with Jade Whiteman and the Cummins team in New Zealand.”

He points out that Dynes’ focus is on maximising its assets, so the fleet has to be diversified because New Zealand is limited in scale.

“Most of our trucks are useful in more than one sector. The twist-lock design we have developed enables our trucks to switch between milk tanker, log and curtainside haulage so we’re keeping our assets as busy as possible.”

The company also has a keen eye on utilising hydrogen to power some of its fleet. In conjunction with HW Richardson Group, a DAF has been fitted with a dual-fuel diesel-hydrogen system which, Horan says, is performing well.

Cutting carbon

“Decarbonisation is becoming a reality for success in the long term,” says Horan.

“It is very important to us because a lot of our clients are in the dairy industry, selling product to the world, which becomes more challenging without a zero carbon stamp.”

HWR is planning to install two electrolysers so that hydrogen can be accessed locally.

“The great news is that Cummins is well advanced with development of a hydrogen internal combustion version of the X15,” says Horan. We need to stay ahead of the curve and the fact Cummins is innovating in this area gives us confidence that this is the right technology to pursue.”

Meanwhile, low-emission Euro 6 DAFs are running in the Dynes fleet and the first Kenworths with Euro 6 X15 engines are entering service.

Academy success

With a serious shortage of truck drivers in New Zealand, the Dynes Academy is aiming to overcome the problem by providing industry-based learning to young people.

“We’re tackling the fact we’re losing drivers to retirement and we need to replace them,” Horan says.

“The academy is about developing and bringing new talent through our system, young guys and girls who are practicallyminded and want a hands-on role.

“It’s teaching young people as much about life skills as it is about getting in a truck. It’s about getting the basics right and setting them up for success.

“The recruits are exposed to different jobs where they have to make decisions, and they get experience in class 2 trucks doing various local deliveries including picking up waste tyres.

“We have a waiting list there’s that much interest in the academy.”

WONDERS

With a previous streak of bad luck, the 70th Wandoan Show has made an epic comeback!

Words: Tiane Gavillucci

Images: Brodie Budd

Owned by John Bock from Theodore – this B model Mack is a tribute to yesteryear

The Wandoan Show has had its fair share of bad luck.

But it made a comeback for its 70th anniversary, in what was remembered as the best show yet.

Throughout its recent show history, there’s been complications to say the least. There was Covid, rain, and even trucks that have had to pull out at the last second.

“We had about 18 trucks pull out two days before the show,” event secretary Joanne Stiller says.

“A lot of people got rained in and couldn’t get their vehicles out with that rainy weather.

“The trucks are one of the biggest attractions to the farmers. We would love to get a good truck show up and running, but every time we do, there’s been a problem.

“We’ve had a bit of a bad trot to a good show, but we pulled it off in the long run.”

This was a milestone year, so it was time for the trucking gods to deliver the goods – and they most certainly did.

To Joanne’s surprise, in comparison to recent years, crowd numbers almost doubled.

“Normally we average 800 people at our show, but we had over 1,500 this year,” she says.

“There’s only 300 people in our little country town – well, 372 if you count the mailboxes on the outskirts. Our numbers were the best I’ve seen in a long time.”

And the local truck lovers of Wandoan brought only the best to showcase to the record crowd.

Joanne remembers a particular local who’s a trucking fan, who brought along a Kenworth so spick and span, she couldn’t stop thinking about how nicely polished up it was.

And there’s already plenty more stunning rigs lined up for next year, with the Kenworth and Volvo brand models wanting a feature at the show.

Big brands like RDO and Toyota turned up for the first time in years – some for the very first time. And when the businesses came, so did the people.

“They brought in a lot of people to us, and now I’ve already got people asking about the show next year.”

For Joanne, the highlight of the event wasn’t a single moment, it was the overall feeling.

“I’ll be really honest with you,” she says. “The mood around the actual show was just… the farmers were really happy, the kids had an absolute ball and to top it off, the tractor pull at the end of the night was the funniest thing.”

As the day faded into evening, locals huddled around tractors, still chatting and laughing well into the night under the fireworks.

“Near the end people were sat with their mates, drink in hand and probably chatting about whose got the biggest truck,” Joanne laughs.

First held in 1955, the Wandoan Show was sparked by a handful of determined townsfolk who were inspired by the other shows in the area.

That decision planted the roots for an event that’s now stitched into the heart of the Wandoan community.

And for Joanne, the community is the reason why she continues to partake in this event.

“I'm glad you didn't ask me after the show because I probably would have burst into tears,” she laughs.

“For us, it's always been about running an affordable event for the community, we've got a lot of kids that have never even seen a cow or even been to a show.

“These kids that attend our show would

probably never have this experience in their lives if it weren’t for what we do.

“So, it's really the community involvement for me, that’s the best part of the show.”

With record numbers and community pride bursting at the seams and talks of next year’s show, Wandoan’s future is looking brighter than ever.

After years of bad weather, bad trucking surprises and Covid, it looks like the good times are now here to stay.

The show even had some good looking tractors

MADNESS IN HEYFIELD

Retro rigs and old machinery amazed crowds at the Heyfield Vintage Machinery Rally, with a couple thousand strolling through the town gates.

Words: Tiane Gavillucci

Images: Heyfield Vintage Machinery Rally

A cloudy, cold day didn’t stop the truck lovers

A monster Mack with a mini Kenworth to go with it

It started around a kitchen table more than 40 years ago.

Just a few blokes kicking around the idea that maybe the old trucks sitting in sheds and paddocks deserved a bit more attention.

A shared love for old machinery sparked a treasured event in country Victoria, the Heyfield Vintage Machinery Rally.

Over the course of two days in May; more than 1,500 people streamed through the gates, including families, transport veterans and youngsters keen to get their foot in the door.

The trucks of course were the main event,

and around 30 rigs lined up like soldiers. You had the big names like Kenworths and Macks announce their presence with a roar, while the old Bedfords, Commers and army trucks each had their own story to tell.

“I’m so proud that we can bring this event to our little town Heyfield and showcase the past and people’s beautiful collections,” event secretary treasurer Barbara Cook says.

“It puts a smile on my face at the end of the day knowing that all went well. It’s lovely to see lots of families with their children having fun.

“But we wouldn’t be able to run this rally without the support of our local Shire giving us a grant.”

The rally is more than just a celebration of trucks. Steam engines puffed alongside vintage motorbikes. Stationary engines hummed as a blacksmith hammered away, and kids grinned ear to ear as they popped on a tractor sled for a ride.

“We had one family travel all the way from Sydney for their kids,” Barbara says. “And they had a ball.”

“We had quite the variety of machines this year. Some guy even had an old pan trailer and it was decked out in living quarters, I had a look, and I was amazed as to what was inside.

“It’s quite a sociable weekend. It's lovely to see people standing around and chatting, we're just a very sociable, friendly club.”

Every dollar spent at the rally stays local, and Heyfield knows the value of that.

“This event brings dollars into the local economy which we really need these days,” she says.

“Our motels and accommodations are usually booked out and we get our local coffee and ice-cream van to feed the publiceven the CFA comes along.

“This is their main fundraiser for the year which goes towards vital equipment for our community to keep us safe. Our local

Lions Club also do our gates, so we've very community-minded.”

The money stays in Heyfield and helps the town in more ways than one.

And to think it all goes back to that original idea, with a few men around a kitchen table and a shared love of machines and trucks.

Now families, local and interstate, come back year after year to hear the engines fired up and big rigs roll in as the gates swing open on yet another Heyfield Vintage Machinery Rally.

TALES

The Stories from the Road Museum hosts an annual reunion where truckies tales are shared and transport history is forever preserved

Words: Tiane Gavillucci

This museum will take you back to a different timeline

Liz Martin resurrects truck drivers’ tales; having spent the last four decades documenting the lives of Australia’s longhaul legends for the Stories from the Road Museum.

Held in the small regional town of Port Pirie in South Australia, the 2025 Reunion was held over a weekend in early April, a chance to reunite old friends and rustic rigs.

“The museum reunion is not only a catchup opportunity for old mates but gives us a chance to record transport stories for the future,” Liz says.

“I have a real passion for this industry and preserving its history, it’s important.”

And there are stories aplenty, all carved into the paintwork of century-old road trains and woven into the now empty truck seats.

The Stories from the Road Museum is a road transport museum devoted to sharing the hardships the men, women and machinery had to face to make Australia the great country that it is today.

“We’ve got over 100 trucks in our museum,” Liz says. “But we do usually get about a dozen or so vehicles turn up on the day of the reunion. This year marks our fourth event.”

About 500 people showed up over the weekend to immerse themselves in written history and standout trucks; among them there was a 1909 Renard road train and a 1949 Scammell Scarab, which are Liz’s

favourites — though she admits, she loves them all.

The reunion features an array of bling rigs and rusty old relics, but it is also a family event where visitors can enjoy a cheeky snag on the barbie, a bevy behind the bar or a boogie with the live band.

The road reunion doesn’t just bring old mates back together. It brings life back to the old town.

“We bring crowds to town and it’s not just for the reunion, we do every week through our museum,” Liz says.

“People stay at caravan parks or motels; they eat here and use the fuel. It’s a real boost to the local economy.”

The heartbeat of the event though is the volunteers who have continued to help Liz for over a decade.

“I’m pretty lucky, I have the world’s best volunteer team, most of them are trucking widows, but often their children are still involved with this industry,” she says.

“Again, it’s that camaraderie and mateship that fuel the volunteers, they step in and do what they need to do.”

“The business has allowed us to develop great relationships with our members who have been coming out to us consistently for 15 years.

“It truly is the camaraderie that makes this industry, and for me that’s really touching.”

Many tales were shared on this day…

Super Show ‘N’ Shine

A brand new, stand out feature of this year’s Brisbane Truck Show was the National Show’N’Shine competition

Words & Images | Warren Aitken

AGreat weather, handy watering holes and stunning rigs, meant the crowds were out in force for the inaugural National Show N Shine

ssembling 28 of the coolest trucks from throughout Australia, parking them up and down the length of South Bank’s Little Stanley Street, leaving them to glisten and gleam for nearly five days, and then somehow crowning a champion of champions?

That was the ambition of the HVIA team this year, creating an event that would entice the best of the best from all corners of this country in order to crown a National Show’n’Shine Champion.

For eight months a dedicated team worked tirelessly behind the scenes to put this crazy concept into action and on May 14, the Wednesday before the opening of the 2025 Brisbane Truck Show, under careful supervision, it all came together.

The trucks rolled out from a muster point in Archerfield and lined up in precise parking spots along South Bank’s busiest little street.

There was a multitude of makes and models, representing past and present eras

Craig Tesch from Morgans Transport gets down to details as he preps the stunning T909 he had in the show

Many of the trucks were open for the crowds to look into, and truly appreciate the artistry involved

Sydney-based Adrian Fenech was a double King Rig winner at the Dane Ballinger Memorial Truck show and brought his stunning K200 up. The whole family made the journey and were all roped in to ensuring this hard-working lorry was on point for the show

DEALS Events

It was all hands-on deck getting the Potten Peterbilt touched up on Wednesday before judging began

The Bondwoods’ W-model was another classic that drew in plenty of attention.

People’s Choice winner for the inaugural show was the oneof-a-kind Auswide Transport Solutions T909

Cesare Coli came all the way from Perth with his award-winning White Road Boss. A staple of the family sawmilling business

The traffic control and volunteer s that helped put this event on also deserve a huge round of applause

One of the coolest stories, and oldest trucks in the show was this amazing Mack flintstone out of WA

Andrew Durham’s Mack Valueliner was one impressive piece of restoration And the presentation and staging of this amazing truck saw Andrew pick up a Highly commended award on the Sunday

of trucking in Australia. An event like this has never been staged in Australia – it was a winning gamble.

After nearly 14 hours of judging, they even had an inaugural champion, although after speaking to most of the entrants, they were all counting themselves as winners for getting the invite to play a part in the foundational foray that is the event.

The HVIA consulted with eight regional shows like the Casino Truck Show, the WA Mack Muster and Truck Show and the Alexandra Truck Show, giving entrants two years to be invited.

Mother Nature threatened to derail the event – the week before she was putting up

signs of a weeklong deluge. However, when all the trucks started staging up along South Banks’ Little Stanley Street, even Mother Nature saw the appeal of 28 amazing trucks and, instead of fighting, she packed away her rainclouds and left the entrants and the spectators alone for all but a brief period.

As entrants began literally rolling out the carpet for their trucks, rotating wheels and even in one case matching valve stems to the centre of the tyre lettering, you began to feel for the judges. It would be tough. That difficult role fell to Kerry Inns from New Zealand and Miles Langley and Jack Wilby, both from Victoria.

In the end, the National Show’n’Shine

Big shiny trucks and happy kids. It was a good mix down on South Bank

The Rasmussen family from Moura took time out of a very busy season to display their award-winning W- model Kenworth. The old girls definitely brought out the traditionalists

Championship was awarded to the Cornwill family and their outstanding Legend SAR.

The nightly light show turned out to be another feature of the event

The Cornwill trucks are renowned throughout the Victorian truck show scene and their Legend SAR, with all its customisation, attention to detail and overall appeal was a deserved winner.

Andrew Durham, another Victorian, who rocked up with his amazing Mack Value-Liner, took out the first of the highly commended awards.

Trent Schaeffer and his stunning K200, picked up the other highly commended award. Like a lot of the public who stopped by Trent’s truck, it was difficult to believe that it’s worked a day in its life, much less average

several thousand kilometres a week.

People’s choice was a runaway for Auswide Transport Solutions’ mobile art piece, Karma. The T909, with its custom interior, custom engine and creative artwork gained a mountain of votes from the constant hoard of admirers.

The best part about this added extra to the highly popular Brisbane Truck Show was the public attention that it brought to the industry.

A massive thanks once again to Mother Nature for playing her part and ensuring the popularity and visual success of the inaugural National Show’n’Shine Championship.

Bring on 2027.

It was all about the support crew over the show period. And Morgans Transport had theirs on hand

The local bars were stacked with patrons enjoying a good feed with a great backdrop

LIONS

Followmont Transport has launched a new UD Quon featuring the Brisbane Lion’s AFLW team that voices a special message

Followmont is a proud supporter of women in transport and sport

If you’re a footy fanatic, specifically a Brisbane Lions fan, you would love to see this truck pass you on the freeway.

Followmont Transport has launched their newest addition to the fleet, a UD Quon, and it comes with a message.

Wrapped in maroon, blue and gold, Followmont’s new rig roars down the road like a statement on wheels, fiercely wearing the Brisbane Lions AFLW team across the trailer with a purpose.

“This idea was born from a shared passion for community, teamwork, and breaking down barriers,” Followmont Transport brand and marketing manager Brodie Sheiles says.

“As a business operating in traditionally male-dominated industries like transport and sport, we saw this as a powerful opportunity to promote visibility and representation for women in both spaces.”

At Followmont, Brodie says they know how important it is for people to be seen, particularly when it’s related to women in traditionally male-dominated industries.

“Supporting women in sport and transport is incredibly important to us because we know that visibility matters,” she says.

“We want young girls – and women of all ages – to see there is a place for them in these industries.

“Whether it’s behind the wheel, in the office, or on the field, we’re committed to building inclusive environments where women can thrive.”

So, who’s behind the wheel of this Brisbane beauty?

The driver is a 24-year-old Jade Harney, who has worked her way up in the industry after years of hard work in transport.

Recently she was awarded NatRoad’s

National Young Driver of the Year in 2024.

“It’s fitting that someone like Jade is behind the wheel,” Followmont Transport general manager, people and safety and NatRoad board member Melissa Strong says.

“She’s a brilliant example of what’s possible.”

The truck carves its route through Brisbane’s key metro areas, like Acacia Ridge, Archerfield, Rocklea, and Darra and is part of Followmont’s local Brisbane Pick Up and Delivery fleet.

It is an essential part of the company’s general freight network and supports a wide range of customers, delivering everything from small jiffy bags with urgent parts headed to rural areas, to larger items like concrete pits and grates for infrastructure projects.

It also handles packaged dangerous goods such as paint, aerosols, and fire extinguishers, along with deliveries of pharmaceuticals or freight for construction, retail, or the industrial sectors – it really doesn’t discriminate.

“This truck plays a vital role in keeping Brisbane’s freight moving efficiently and safely,” Melissa says.

The visual design of the truck itself is impossible to ignore and unmistakably Lions. It’s a truck that commands attention.

Brodie says the rig captures the strength and success of women in AFLW, while reinforcing their shared message that transport is a place for everyone.

“The response has been overwhelmingly positive – from customers, our team, and the general public who’ve seen it out on the road,” she says.

And from the players themselves?

The moment the truck was revealed to a group of AFLW players, they were thrilled.

There wasn’t just admiration for the livery, but deep respect for what it represents –equality and opportunity.

This isn’t Followmont’s first time using their fleet to tell a story either.

The maroon, gold and blue easily turn heads

DEALS Feature

Jade Harney drives this beauty of a rig – an eye-catching rig with an important message

Brodie says Followmont use their trucks as travelling billboards and are passionate about using them to showcase who they are and what they stand for.

“We’ve supported a range of campaigns through our truck designs, from road safety awareness and regional charity partnerships to celebrating our people,” she says.

“This is the third truck in our fleet dedicated to promoting women in industry. For us, our trucks are more than just vehicles – they’re a way to carry meaningful messages to communities right across Queensland and New South Wales.”

This truck was made possible thank to Followmont’s partnership with Lions Legacy and the project was driven by the managing director Mark Tobin’s passion for giving back to communities, promoting the positive image of transport, and connecting with younger generations to highlight the opportunities in transport.

“The Brisbane Lions AFLW team was a natural fit - they embody many of the same values we stand for, including resilience, teamwork, and driving meaningful change,” Brodie says.

“Just as they’re reshaping perceptions

around women in sport, we’re committed to doing the same for women in transport.

“As a woman who has built a career in this industry, I know firsthand how important representation is. This truck is about making space for the next generation.”

Melissa says this truck is a symbol of progress and purpose. It’s a representation of Followmont’s pride in supporting women, not only through words but through action.

“For our team, it’s a reminder that we all play a role in shaping a more inclusive industryand that we can use our platform to make a real impact,” she says.

Despite some Aussie women still finding their voice within transport and sport, it’s empowering to see a big transport name like Followmont Transport show off our women in such a loud way with the roar of their new UD.

THE RIG

A father-son project brings an old International Acco back to life – but now it’s time to pass the keys

Words: Tiane Gavillucci

Images: Tim Armstrong

With Robert now wanting something more comfortable, it’s time for this Acco to find a new home

Whether you love it or hate it, the tiresome long, hard-working hours of being a truckie do catch up with you.

As a wife of a truckie, Tim Armstrong’s mum Liz knew the ins and outs of the industry all too well.

“As a kid, mum made me promise to never get into truck driving, she said she would shoot me if I ever did,” Tim laughs.

“She knew it was long hours and made for a hard life, she wanted something different for me.

“Now I drive trucks recreationally. It was something I circled back to later in life as a hobby.”

And not only does Tim drive trucks, he can also fix them up.

On that front, Tim’s dad, Robert was after a rig to drive for fun – preferably an Acco, as they made up most of his driving career.

He looked at many different options of trucks, before stumbling across a 1978 International Acco 1730B on a social media page.

But make no mistake, Tim says, Robert

selected this truck very carefully.

“Dad fell into transport by default, as his dad was also a truckie who carted bricks,” Tim says.

“During the ‘60s he left school to follow in his father’s footsteps and started work at his dad’s business.

"Then he worked for a couple of his mates, then eventually bought his first truck when he was 22.

“He wanted an Acco as that was what he knew best, and mainly worked with, over the years. These trucks are a nostalgic throwback for him.”

Tim says Robert bought this International off a fellow in Kootingal near Tamworth.

“This guy was a bit of a collector and had owned the truck for a few years,” Tim says.

“When dad bought it, the truck was almost completely restored. It was only two owners ago that they did the full strip down and rebuild.”

“With low mileage, it’s had a pretty easy life up in northern New South Wales, it’s only got about 170,000 kilometres on the clock.

This rig’s used for pure enjoyment

An old classic white rig, you can’t go wrong

“It was almost as good as it is now, we haven't done a huge amount to it because we haven't needed to; 90-95 per cent of the work was done before we even got it.”

And what work it was. The Acco had been given a full-blown makeover, including a full chassis and cab re-spray, the interior was re-trimmed, the matching tray was re-done, new flooring was put in and it received a good paint job.

Inside there’s a Bluetooth stereo unit, UHF and extra 12v/USB power. It runs a Perkins 6.354 with a five-speed direct box and twospeed differentiator.

“The brakes have been re-done, there’s now lots of nice clearance lights and pinstriping on it, so someone’s spent a lot of time and money doing it up,” he says. “The interior is immaculate, the chassis is immaculate, the cab is immaculate, the whole thing is!”

And though it is Robert’s truck, Tim was the handyman behind the already restored rig, adding a slide out ladder system to access the tray, modifying the headboard, rewiring to improving the circuitry and improving the

function of the clearance lights.

It took Tim only a few weeks to fix the Acco up, place the exterior flooring in, as well as new auxiliary points and complete an overall mechanical tidy up.

“The engine has recently had the injector pump done and runs really well. It sounds great through the stack,” he says.

Since its clean up, it’s been Robert’s companion for the past 15 months… until now, as the realities of age catch up.

“He’s about to turn 74,” Tim says. “He wants something a bit more comfortable, more beneficial for his advancing years, so he’s selling the Acco. He's finding that climbing up into a cabover is pretty hard especially on his stuffed shoulder.”

“He doesn't want to give up driving, but he wants to get into something that's got easier cab access. He'll probably get something bigger but easier to drive; just something to have fun with.”

Robert’s not giving up spending his days on the road, he’s just changing lanes for now. Meanwhile, it’s time for someone else to take the Acco’s wheel.

The Acco’s rear… handy for all kinds of loads

IN STYLE

Major projects are a driving force in the latest offering from Mercedes-Benz

You ever been to Hungry Jacks and tried to order a Big Mac?

Or vice-versa, rocked up to Maccas and ordered yourself a Whopper meal.

Obviously, their immediate response will be to yell at you that you can’t walk through the drive-thru and put that bottle away.

But with the right exchange of time and finances, you can get either restaurant to construct as close to what you want as possible.

Sit with me on this for a minute, I have a point.

The fact is they both have all the ingredients needed to make whatever you like, in the end it comes down to the price, and how long you are prepared to wait.

I know that sounds obscure and irrelevant,

Trucks

but the truth is it is the best way to describe the reason I was invited out to one of Australia’s leading mulching and garden cultivation companies to test drive a kitset Mercedes tipper.

The tip truck market in Australia is huge, for years it has been dominated by bonneted American trucks or converted trade ins, but lately the emergence of the European cabovers, factory fitted with safety features and fuel saving technology, has seen the balance of power sway a little.

Daimler trucks Australia and their flagship Mercedes Actros have been slowly growing their presence in the tipper market. The drawback has always been, for Mercedes fans at least, they were metaphorically heading to Maccas and ordering a Whopper.

Words and images:
Warren Aitken

In other words, they were having to buy a Mercedes platform sitting on the floor and convert it into a tipper.

That involved spending plenty of extra coin converting a long wheelbase tractor unit up to mount a body, re-configuring all the European wiring and electricals.

Then, working, with body builders to relay and rehouse hydraulics, electrics and all that fancy stuff that makes the tipper body work.

It was never a drama; plenty have done it and been rewarded for their choices. But it was extra time and money.

Well now Mercedes have changed the drive through route. You can order your Big Mac direct from Maccas, Your Whopper straight from Jack.

In other words, factory-specced PBS compliant Mercedes are now on the menu, and I was invited Yatala, Queensland to

get sunburnt, to get educated in all things horticultural and to see for myself how good the kitset Mercedes Tippers really are.

I won’t spend a lot of time talking about the performance of the Mercedes product. The fact is nothing has changed with them. The German-designed truck is as comfortable as any high-end lounge suite.

Its 13-litre 530hp engine it packs as much punch as Oleksandr Usyk during training camps and when it comes to safety and technology, it rivals anything the Star Trek writers could come up with.

The kitset tippers that Mercedes are factory-packing for its Australia customers come with all the bells and whistles you would expect from the German giants and that is the point.

What I want to focus on is how and why they have put this package together and how

The Aggressive grill, and extra ground clearance are a dead give-away of the Aroc build over the Actros

DEALS Drive

and why it will be a huge money saver for the Australian market.

Whilst the Actros L cab with its comfy bed isn’t a necessity for tipper work, the extra space and under-drawer fridge are very much appreciated by the customers

I keep mentioning ‘Australian Market’ ‘Australian Customers’ and emphasising the ‘Australian’ side of this deal and the reason for that is simple. This new kitset tipper set up is designed specifically for the Australian market. We are a different breed over here with different requirements, different conditions and different expectations.

Mercedes already have a heavy duty, construction-industry specced truck and that is the ever-popular Aroc range. Same cab options as an Actros, similar engine specs and it comes with everything needed to get down and dirty.

However, the Aroc has always been seen and predominantly used as a hard-core off-road rig. Not so much a high payload, on highway, high productivity-based truck and dog option.

In the past if you were a fan of the threepointed star and wanted a tip truck, the Daimler Australia team would be building a truck and dog out of the Actros model

available to them. There are a fair few modifications and alterations needed to fit the Australian PBS standards for 3 and 4 axle dog trailer set ups and the local team wanted a way to make it more cost effective, speed up the whole process and have a more competitive truck and dog market option.

My host for the test drive, sales consultant Brendon Palmer was part of the team tasked with seeing what could be done over in Worth am Rhein, which is Mercedes’ manufacturing plant, to suit the PBS 3-axle and 4-axle dog combination.

They started with using the Actros bones, as in the 13litre 530hp engine which they knew was doing the job. As well as the 12-speed Benz gearbox which was also perfectly placed in the already running truck and dog combinations.

They then took the Benz bones and slipped them inside a Mercedes Aroc facade. That facade included the likes of a straight front axle and higher ground clearance, a heavier duty shock absorber package and a much more off-road suited air intake system.

The Aroc facade also included an already squared off after-frame and a slightly set back front axle compared to the Actros. All thing required of the perfect truck and dog tipper platform.

In the factory they were able to alter the Aroc wheelbase and limit the tare weight with a smaller ad blue tank, in the case of our test truck it had just the single 390 litre fuel tank.

Daimler worked very closely with people smart enough to decipher the PBS requirements to design a set up that meets all the requirements straight out of the box.

From the factory the trucks come with air and electrics to the rear, ABS to the rear. PTO already to plug and play. Beacon switches prewired, everything set up, ready to ship off to your body builder and they can basically just drop the bins on. No hacking or splicing into anything.

“We wanted something we could get straight out of the factory, that would be the right weight, that bodybuilders could just mount and go” states Brendon.

Now that I have explained the motivation

behind the test truck I was handed the keys to, it is only fair that I get the chance to share my opinion of the truck and dog combo as well. Keep in mind that it’s been a good decade since I was out and about as a mud carter.

You can forgive me for not turning it inside out on my first go, or second. The Mercedes was a lot more manoeuvrable than the old, bonneted tipper I had back in the 2010s.

Backing up in general was a breeze with this truck, even turning in the tight confines of the yard was extremely impressive. What I learned from the experience was that the Mercedes Aroc has fantastic mirrors.

On highway you do have to take your time double checking as you come into roundabouts, the downside to large mirrors is a bigger blind spot, but you are able to keep track of traffic around you very easily, so that’s the positive side.

When you are on site and turning it inside out, you can also see exactly what you are doing wrong, they just won’t improve your skills enough to fix it. Until the third go.

I was also lucky to be tipping off in a very

The manoeuvrability of the Mighty Merc makes it an ideal tip truck for all those hard-to-get places

Safety and productivity are two key factors with truck and dog combinations these days and the Mercedes nails both of them

The digital dashboard has everything you didn’t know you needed and can be set up in several different ways. I just didn’t get time to learn them

Wide access to the cab and prominent safety handrails are another distinguishing asset of the Mercedes Aroc

One of the best parts of the Mercedes is their mirror set up. A definite bonus when you are doing truck and dog work in and around traffic

If you look at the mud on the tyres you will get an indication of how deep I got the Aroc beached in the soft sand earlier. All it took was a little rocking, diff lock and cross locks and it feed its own way out

soft sanded area which meant my multiple attempts to turn it inside out created a bit of a hazard. Getting me stuck and giving me an opportunity to see how good the Aroc was at getting unstuck. I think even the salesman and yardy were a bit doubtful, but I must admit the Aroc did a fantastic job of getting itself out of a very soft hole. That did impress me.

On the road, heading between sites the Mercedes is exactly like you would expect from a luxury automotive manufacturer. Having the comfort and quietness of a highway chariot just makes the job so much easier. The Benz box handles the loads and the hills, as well as the stop start traffic with ease and takes a lot of the stress off the driver.

The state-of-the-art controls and display may need a NASA engineer to explain; I was trying to change the speedo to a display I could understand and failed. But that sort of thing would be easily explained during a handover. Or with multiple attempts whilst waiting to load.

The Test drive unit was designed to show

exactly how productive the Aroc Tipper setup could be. Fitted with Hercules bodies on the truck and 4 axle trailer.

Sporting the Euro 6 engine, with a single 390 litre fuel tank, running 315 steer tyres and 295 on the drives. The PBS approved combo is good to go to 58T. Meaning a payload of just over 40T.

On the hills around Mt Tambourine the 530Hp engine wasn’t setting any land speed records but it also wasn’t lagging around either. I did enjoy the fact that you could feel and hear both the engine and retarder when they were in full swing during our test drive.

The long and short of this test drive was mainly so I could learn more about the production of mulch than I ever needed and to show off the kitset concept that Daimler Australia now have in place with the Arocs.

With everything now coming together, ready to go on the factory floor, ordering a new state-of-the-art, high productivity PBS approved truck and dog set up just got a lot easier.

Getting a 40T payload on a truck that’s a pleasure to drive keeps the driver and the owner happy

Equipment Expo

Melbourne hosted the Hire and Rental Industry Association’s annual expo, showcasing the latest machinery that the industry has to o er

The leading event for the equipment hire and rental market in Australia, Hire25, returned from June 4-5 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Hosted by the Hire and Rental Industry Association, Hire25 showcased the latest technology, innovation, and products in the sector, which was complemented by an awards night and conference.

There was a wide variety of equipment on show with everything from scissor li s and telehandlers to mini excavators.

Here is a look at a few pieces of machinery that were on show.

Sinoboom

Access equipment manufacturer Sinoboom exhibited a range of telescopic boom li s and scissor li s.

The TB14J Plus was the standout of the range, which Sinoboom describes as “a safe and adaptable mobile elevating work platform that meets challenging conditions and requirement needs”.

This model is the smallest in the telescopic boom li range, with a maximum working height of 16.1m.

Able to hold two to three operators on the platform at a time, Sinoboom says these units are suited to a variety of industries including construction engineering, building maintenance, shipbuilding and repairing, as well as in airports.

JCB

The 525-60E electric telehandler took pride of place on JCB’s stand. First launched locally in 2023, this

telehandler produces zero emissions, has a near-silent performance and provides full-day operation on a single charge.

It also o ers fast charging options to the maintenance-free lithium battery, while delivering what JCB describes as the same performance as its diesel-powered counterpart.

The 525-60E also gives operators up to 2,500kg li capacity, 6m maximum li height and 3.5m reach.

Dieci

Another telehandler on display was Dieci’s new Apollo Smart 20.4.

Dieci describes the Apollo Smart 20.4 as “the most compact and agile of the Dieci mining telehandlers”.

A 50hp (37kW) Kubota engine features on this xed boom telehandler, which also has a maximum 4.35m li height and 2,000kg li capacity.

Dieci says it excels in tight spaces without compromising on power or precision, and it also has three steering modes, a robust boom and spacious cabin.

Bobcat

Two Bobcat machines which o er signi cant versatility – the S650 skid steer loader and E17Z mini excavator – were being shown at Hire25.

Available through Bobcat Australia, which is a division of Clark Equipment, these machines are part of the compact equipment range.

The E17Z mini excavator has a zero-turn swing, making it ideal for working in compact spaces, and o ers plenty of features such as a 16,177N bucket digging force plus a 3.97m reach.

Bobcat’s S650 skid steer loader has a 1,220kg rated operating capacity and 2,440kg tipping load and is a vertical li path model which o ers greater forward reach for loading into trucks.
