Hexagon’s key acquisition
Hexagon’s acquisition of UK firm Xwatch Safety Solutions is a strategic move that expands its portfolio. Xwatch has been a pioneer in the field of construction machine safety systems with its XW series, which has features such as height control, slew control, and rated capacity indication (RCI). The XW Series units help operators set up safe virtual working zones, boosting safety measures around equipment. The strategic move for Hexagon is that it follows the collaboration between Xwatch and Leica Geosystems, already part of Hexagon. This has resulted in the innovative 3D Avoidance Zone system.
Coupling the Xwatch XW Series with the 3D machine control systems from Leica Geosystems means that machine operators can now set out safe zones right across a worksite, without having to reset the technology every time the machine is moved. For example, when a wheeled excavator is being used on a highway job alongside live traffic, the operator can carry out the job at each area then move the machine and begin working again immediately. The system ensures that the
machine only operates within the limits of the safe zone and the boom or counterweight cannot overhang the live traffic lanes. The Xwatch system works with the 3D control from Leica Geosystems to generate a safe working corridor within the restrictions of the highway. And the system disables the machine hydraulics if the operator accidentally moves beyond the
safe working zone. This is a significant step as it integrates the safety solutions from Xwatch within Hexagon’s range of construction tools to improve risk management and decision-making processes, delivering safer construction environments.
Dan Leaney, director of Sales and Operations at Xwatch Safety Solutions commented:
acquisition of UK rm Xwatch expands its portfolio
“Joining Hexagon represents a transformative opportunity for us to push the boundaries of safety technology in the construction industry. It allows us to leverage Hexagon’s global expertise and reach, bringing our cutting-edge safety solutions to a wider audience and significantly impacting worker safety worldwide.”

Rototilt invests significantly in robotic welding
Rototilt, a global market tiltrotator manufacturer for industries including quarrying and construction, is investing heavily in the future by expanding its factory in Vindeln, northern Sweden. The extensive investment includes the development of a state-of-the-art robotic welding facility at a cost of around SEK 35 million (€3.07mn).
“Even though the economic situation is challenging right now, we believe in continued growth and require greater flexibility and capacity to meet our customers’ high demands. This investment is strengthening our position, enabling us to deliver with speed and precision, which is crucial in our market segment,” says Anders Jonsson, Rototilt CEO.
The new robotic welding facility links up handling robots and welding robots. Launched in October 2023, the project includes an expansion of the factory to 1080m², spread over two floors. The new welding section will be ready for final inspection in May 2024.
“The global situation is placing new demands on us, and we are dealing with this at the same time as attempting to develop our business. We are now creating the conditions to improve our delivery precision, which we are constantly focusing on since we know how important it is to our customers,” says Jonsson.
Rototilt’s production facility is powered by fossil-free energy, and the extended factory is being
built with an advanced energy recovery system. The heat from the welding process is recovered via the ventilation system, reducing energy consumption and the climate footprint. The factory’s primary heating source is district heating, produced from local biofuel.
“The new welding facility will contribute to a lower proportion of goods transport. All the contributing elements are
important, and we are constantly thinking about reducing our climate footprint,” says Ida Skaring, sustainability strategist at Rototilt.
During the autumn 2023, Rototilt also invested in one of Sweden’s largest private charging parks, with 178 vehicle spaces outside the factory in Vindeln. All the parking spaces have sockets for engine heaters and electric car charging.
“We are proud to create a greener workplace and support the ongoing transition to sustainable travel. Half of our employees commute from other municipalities, and this development is making it easier for anyone who drives an electric car to get to the workplace. It will hopefully also encourage more people to switch to an electric car. Our aim is not only to offer innovative products but also a production facility that aligns with the highest sustainability standards,” says Jonsson.

Interview with Jean-Claude Fayat
Jean-Claude Fayat, president of the Fayat Group, discussed the rm’s technologies and strategies with World Highways editor Mike Woof
QWhere do you see the market for electric road machines developing? What customers are showing the strongest interest?
AThe market demand for electric road machines seems to be mainly driven by policies and incentives by the government or authorities today (such as in Sweden, Norway and the Netherlands), whereas markets without major (financial) involvement/ support by the government are developing rather slowly. We can also see that cities and urban areas are also going in the direction of electrification, also with an interest for rental solutions, so I would say we are in a transition period towards having multiple electric products available - mainly of course from the leading manufacturers for earthmoving and road building equipment around the globe. The share of electric machinery on the total market is still very small. We expect the ratio to change significantly if our customers are able to calculate a valid business case around
the investment of an electric machine in combination with official targets or regulations to reduce the carbon footprint/or to utilise more environmentally friendly products. A TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) can also show the commercial viability of electric solutions.
Today, we at Fayat Group are ready for the transition, we already have a broad range of environmentally friendly products, like our hybrid machines or electrified portfolio, such as hand guided electric machines, small electric tandem rollers, the city paver and the top sprayer.
QWhat do you think of the potential for retrofitting electric power systems to existing machines?
AThis is an interesting topic: retrofitting existing machines is a valid scenario for special applications where series production is not yet in place. As a retrofit on existing asphalt plants, it is possible to think about updating control systems, inserting inverters,
combining photovoltaic systems and other solutions to move towards electrical independence. The replacement of combustion engines with electric power systems is possible and quicker than starting from scratch. Since performance and endurance/ quality is our priority, we believe that retrofitting can be a good interim solution to be able to provide a solution as per our customer’s needs.
However, it could be complicated to attain equivalent performance with a retrofitted machine. Moreover, CEconformity and ISO norm require heavy effort. And we do know from experience that the best performance of an electrical machine is obtained when the machine is designed from the ground up as with electrified machines, and with a fully electrified solution without hydraulics.
QBOMAG and Dynapac have built electric compactors and pavers, but what other machines offer potential for electrification?
AThe actual available technology combined with the cost “price/kWh” drives the answer to this question. Of course, the smaller the equipment is, the more reasonable technology and cost are available at the moment. In addition to this, all applications for inner-city use offer a great opportunity to use electric products as charging technology is easily accessible. Benefits include less CO2 emissions, silent working conditions and easier maintenance.
At the Fayat group, we already have a broad range of electrified products besides the electric compactors and pavers, such as the electrified sweepers of Ravo and Dulevo as well as the airport tractors of Charlatte. Within the road maintenance sector, we are already working on different models of sprayers for Secmair, for grip layers or tack coatings. So, we expand our programme continuously.
With advancing battery technology, we expect to also electrify bigger soil and asphalt
rollers without compromising performance.
For very high-power requirements, we can combine various drives. For large pavers, milling machines or stabilisers for example, we can imagine combining alternative fuels such as hydrogen engines or even fuel cells and electrified drives in the entire vehicle concept. Our customers require a consistently high level of performance from our machines and our priority is that we provide them with a solution to get their work done properly.
QWhat do you think of the potential for hydrogen as fuel for mobile machines and asphalt plant burners? What are the barriers to this being commercially viable at present?
AGreen hydrogen or lowcarbon hydrogen appear to be real alternatives to fossil fuels. Especially for heavier
equipment with large power consumption, hydrogen is a very valid option with potential. Ermont, our brand for continuous asphalt plants, is offering an asphalt plant burner capable of burning gas, hydrogen or a mixture of these two fuels. Today, the current barriers lie in the supply of hydrogen - the transportation, storage, and refuelling at job-sites is the biggest challenge. Supply by pipeline or in situ hydrogen production seem viable to us. Ermont has identified several companies capable of providing to our customers the supply of low-carbon hydrogen produced directly on the asphalt plant site.
QWhat geographical markets are strong for the Fayat Group at present? What are the prospects for the construction machinery market for the coming 12 months?
90 years for Dynapac
Dynapac president Paul Hence discussed the rm’s 90th anniversary with World Highways editor Mike Woof
Paul Hense is president of Dynapac and commented that the firm has made many significant technical advances in its 90year history, “It’s a Swedish company that has done a lot of things. Innovation has always been a trademark of the brand.”
One of the firm’s latest technologies is for the innovative Seismic system for compaction. Initially available for soil compaction only, the system is now offered for asphalt compactors as well. The system offers key benefits for users according to Hence and he said, “It’s not extremely expensive.”
AThe FAYAT Group is fully positioned with its brands around the road life cycle. This enables us to meet customer needs not only in Europe but also worldwide. North America, in particular, is developing significantly positively. Due to our broad global presence, we are able to offset local fluctuations and continue our growth.
QHow is digitalisation benefiting construction customers?
ADigitalisation is more and more present in the road equipment business. As manufacturers, it is important
plan service, find operator best practices etc. The result is lower costs through improved efficiency, reduced waste and faster execution. To sum up, it saves time and money!
We are also able to give reports and follow the quality of jobsites, with BOMAP for example. These types of tools are great to facilitate the operator’s life, which is very good in case of skilled labour shortage. Indeed, with intelligent and automatic functions, we bring attractiveness to the sector by making tasks directly done from the driver seat and physically less stressful.
Using the system offers efficiency gains for customers and Hense said, “On soil it can give a 30% saving and on asphalt it’s around 15%.”
The firm has introduced other innovations recently, such as the new spraypaver system, also delivering benefits for the user Hense said, “If you spray as you pave, you can use thinner asphalt layers.” He said that this offers major material savings for highway jobs, cutting costs significantly.
Another recent development has been the firm’s novel electric paver, which suits use in urban areas or tunnel jobs where working noise and emissions
part of the Fayat Group. Although the company is a strong brand in many geographic areas such as India
firm’s previous owners, “Mr Fayat understands machines and he understands construction.” www.dynapac.com

DIGITAL SOLUTION TO INCREASE PAVING PROCESS EFFICIENCY?
Bomag, as part of FAYAT Group, is pushing forward the decarbonisation agenda with its Asphalt Pro digital solution for better jobsite planning, full process transparency and ef ciency improvements along the whole asphalt construction process.
Process ef ciency of work ow is one of the pillars of decarbonistion, something which the Road Equipment Division at FAYAT Group has taken to heart.
At last month’s INTERMAT 2024 exhibition in Paris, the French familyowned company - and world leader in road equipment - demonstrated on its stand how, by using Bomag’s ASPHALT PRO to digitalise the entire asphalt road building process, its clients can improve process transparency, increase ef ciency during planning, logistics, material production and paving.
Supervisory staff in the eld must cope with an ever-increasing number of pressing demands, such as time pressure, cost increases and intensi ed speci cations. Process ef ciency is about optimising the material demand planning process, material production schedules, logistics and on-site job work ow.
ASPHALT PRO creates a transparent jobsite blueprint including logistics concept and real-time material target-actual comparison that is always accessible to all parties involved making the jobsite 4.0 concept a reality.
Work on the jobsite runs more smoothly, the demands placed on staff and equipment are optimised and quality and productivity are boosted while reducing carbon emissions.
That is where ASPHALT PRO app comes in. It gives site managers a process ef ciency for managing the asphalt job site digitally. Intelligent networking means that the entire construction site data is available at all times. During the paving process, the app constantly compares target speci cations from planning with the current site data.
No special hardware is required – a laptop, tablet or smartphone is suf cient.
ASPHALT PRO lightens the site manager’s workload and makes construction planning mobile. It calculates the necessary paving parameters and targets to the exact minute, automatically generates all planning documents,
responds exibly to changes and connects the mixing plant with the trucks and the construction site in real time.
ASPHALT PRO will calculate the mix requirements, communicate with the mixing plant, show the route to the job site and calculate the truck scheduling. It will pass on process changes directly, reduce the coordination effort and document the data for Surface Covering Dynamic Compaction Control.
In this way, Bomag’s ASPHALT PRO is pushing forward the decarbonisation agenda for the betterment of its clients, their employees and the local communities in which they live and work.

DYNAPAC’S SEISMIC SHIFT TOWARDS GREATER MACHINE EFFICIENCY
FAYAT’s brands, including Dynapac, that appeared at the INTERMAT 2024 exhibition in Paris last month, exemplify how innovation is boosting machine ef ciency.
The Road Equipment Division at FAYAT Group, a French family-owned company and world leader in road equipment, does its utmost to offer its clients sustainable equipment and solutions for road construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation. The brands that appeared at the INTERMAT 2024 exhibition in Paris last month - BOMAG, DYNAPAC, ERMONT, MARINI, SAE and SECMAIR - showcased their latest innovations for every stage of the road lifecycle.
These included solutions for asphalt production, application and compaction, road maintenance, sweeping, cold milling, stabilisation and recycling as well as soil and asphalt compaction. Common to the latest innovation from all the FAYAT brands are the four pillars of decarbonisation: machine ef ciency, process ef ciency, operator ef ciency and alternative energy sources.
Machine ef ciency is exempli ed by Dynapac’s SEISMIC ASPHALT technology that automatically adapts the vibration frequency – on both the front and rear drum.
The real-time frequency adjustment helps the roller deliver just the right amount of force at the right time to obtain the optimal compaction result. In other words, SEISMIC ASPHALT technology helps the roller adapt its effort to the actual state of the asphalt, also considering the temperature of the asphalt mix.
In combination with EcoMode, SEISMIC ASPHALT can deliver up to 25% savings on fuel costs. Extremely easy to use and quiet both inside and outside the cab, it greatly enhances operator comfort.
SEISMIC ASPHALT is available on the entire range of Dynapac’s articulated and pivot asphalt rollers over 7tonnes. Importantly, Dynapac now offers a new range of rollers in the 7-9tonne class, including four new models of pivot asphalt rollers. The pivot asphalt roller in the 9tonne weight class - CX9, was on display at Intermat, featuring options such as a 360° camera with pedestrian detection and an all-new Human Machine Interface. Combi versions of the CX8 and CX9 are also available to the market. Visitors to the FAYAT stands at INTERMAT were able to get rst-hand knowledge of how SEISMIC ASPHALT and Dynapac are helping move the decarbonisation agenda ahead in leaps and bounds.

Ammann says its blue smoke capture system reduces the emissions that result while loading asphalt mix to trucks. The Ammann Blue Smoke Treatment (BST) is a cost-effective solution that does not require expensive confinement equipment and is inexpensive to operate.
The BST system captures fumes that previously would have escaped during loading and redirects them to a multistage filtration system. BST applies the indirect aspiration of blue smoke used in the thermic force of the gases to reduce energy absorption, the power installed and the volume flow.
The filters remove the oily particles during multiple stages, ensuring high efficiency. After filtering, the system reroutes the remaining gases to the combustion chamber, lowering costs as the captured air is already heated.
The condensed oil accumulates in the filtration system and can be recycled. The BST system enables a steady flow rate without increasing the plant gas flow at the chimney. No new emissions authorisations are necessary.
“Newer, stricter regulations are requiring that steps be taken to mitigate these fumes, so the availability of BST is well-timed,” said Stampfli Philipp (AMMANN Global Head of Process Technology).
“In addition to sustainable benefits, we expect it simplify

the process for obtaining permits and improve relations with neighbours. It’s important to remember that BST removes fumes that are visible. The air won’t just be cleaner. It will look cleaner and smell cleaner.”
The BST system can be installed on plants manufactured by Ammann or competitors. A plant owner does not need to purchase a new plant to benefit
from this technology. Adding BST to an existing plant allows the owner to continue using the plant while meeting tightening emissions standards.
It reduces blue smoke during loading but does not reduce plant capacity. It does not require expensive confinement systems and reduces costs by reusing air that has already been heated. It can help existing
Hamm’s innovative asphalt roller
Hamm’s latest asphalt compactors now offer both vibration and oscillation capabilities for effective compaction. The HD+ 120i V-VIO 12t tandem roller is equipped with a vibration drum at the front and a VIO drum delivering oscillation forces at the rear. High compaction forces are claimed, along with reliability, durability, productivity and ease of maintenance.
The roller is powered by a 115kW Deutz engine that meets Tier 4 Final/ Stage 5 emissions requirements and features the firm’s efficient Easy Drive operating concept. A key feature is the versatility as it offers static compaction, oscillation and vibration. The operator can switch easily between vibration and oscillation, removing the need to switch machines or deploy an additional machine and another operator on the construction site. This versatility means that the same machine can be used for different types of asphalt mixture as well as applications. The combination of vibration and oscillation delivers fast compaction in fewer double passes, suiting it to final compaction. High compaction quality is claimed even at increased working speeds.
plants meet tightening emissions standards and ease the process of gaining permits for new plants.
In addition it allows recycling of the trapped oil, is easy to service by cleaning the filters and Features a filtration system that is laser welded and hydraulically sealed to prevent leaks.

The machine has the latest Hamm cab, offering good all-round visibility as well as various interfaces to connect telematics systems, fleet management systems and digital applications for controlling and documenting compaction.
Operators can make use of the benefits of oscillation for the compaction of joints or compaction in vibration-sensitive areas such as bridges. Oscillation also allows compaction at low outside temperatures, since a wider temperature range can be used. The system is effective in preventing particle crushing and over-compaction, has benefits when compacting distortion-sensitive materials and reduces the noise emissions and vibrations experienced on and around the construction site.

Ammann’s compact twin drum roller
Ammann’s new light tandem roller is petrolpowered and features side-free drums that enable compaction in tight jobsites. The Ammann ARX 10.1 StV features the Honda GX630 petrol engine rated at 15.5kW. This reduces ownership costs and meets the latest Stage V/ EPA Phase III emissions regulations.
The engine is more compact than its diesel counterpart. The smaller size enables positioning that allows cooling from all sides, helping the machine to perform in hot ambient temperatures.
Beyond size, the use of petrol brings other advantages. Petrol is generally less expensive, so there is likely a cost advantage with every lling of the tank. There is no need for a diesel particulate lter (DPF) and maintenance of a petrol engine is less costly than for a diesel
engine. Petrol is often more convenient for smaller construction companies and rental customers. The Ammann ARX10.1 StV is the only machine on the market with drum consoles installed from a single side. The drums are support-free on the right side. This allows compaction work on the tightest of jobsites. Drum working widths are 900mm and drums are installed inline.
A powerful hydraulic system is the core of the powertrain structure. Both drums are equipped with robust drive motors that bring high traction, gradeability and speed. The motors are equipped with a negative parking brake mechanism that ensures safe parking when the engine is switched off.

BENNINGHOVEN’S INNOVATIVE HYDROGEN BURNER
One of Benninghoven’s customers in Norway is now using the firm’s innovative hydrogen burner to produce several thousand tonnes of asphalt.
The hydrogen burner from Benninghoven is supplied with
an intelligent control system to maximise the efficiency during asphalt production. This includes control of the feed systems, including the pressure control section, drying section with burner and burner control. It is a multifuel unit and can
use natural gas and light oil in addition to hydrogen.
A novel feature is that it can be set to use any combination of the three fuels, with any percentage of either also, depending on fuel availability. To make the asphalt production
process more efficient, Benninghoven says it has developed a new generation of burners that includes the control and drying system alongside the burner itself. With this system, up to four separate burners can be operated at the same time.
This versatile approach increases the cost-effectiveness of the plant as an owner can use the best available energy sources.
Switching between fuels or combinations of multiple fuels is done on the fly, meaning that no shutdown or downtime is required and with only minimal temperature fluctuations in the process. Emissions are kept low when using hydrogen as a fuel, with minimal NOx being produced.
The company also says that the power draw has been reduced by 20% while keeping the feed capacity constant. Heat transfer efficiency has been significantly improved by maximising the use of the burner space and providing a burner control and geometry that ensures optimum flame production for each fuel. Another significant benefit for plant operators is the 5dB reduction in noise emissions.
Green hydrogen is a sustainable fuel, producing no greenhouse gases and is suitable for the heating process due to its high energy density. In many cases, facility operators wishing to use hydrogen as a fuel experience difficulties due to current limitations in their infrastructure.

The new ART1000 unit from Simex offers fast and effective road repairs.
The unit is suited to use on urban roads and offers a cost-effective solution for repairs and maintenance works. The Italian firm is best known for its attachments for compact machines and this new unit is designed for use on a highperformance skid steer loader with high flow hydraulics but it is rather more sophisticated than a simple milling unit.
Alessandro Ferrin from the firm commented, “It’s the most advanced attachment we have and we spent five or six years developing it. This is not a common milling attachment you fit to a skid steer.”
He said that the unit offers users the option of cold-in-place recycling, allowing speedy, lowcost road repairs. Additional training is required for the machine operator though, to ensure that repair works are carried out properly.
Apart from the skid steer carrying the attachment, the only other piece of equipment required is a small twin drum compactor.
The milling drum at the front of the unit breaks out the old surface, with a second revolving cutter then reducing the material to the 0-15mm size. Ferrin said, “’Everything is controlled by the system that maintains a constant percentage of additive.” The unit is patented,
with a special system that ensures the exact quantities of additives are used no matter the speed or depth of cut.
The unit can be used for repairing local roads quickly, and as almost all of the material is from the surface, with only a small percentage of additives, it reduces the cost of carrying the material. Repairs can also
be carried out repeatedly on the same stretch of road.
Ferrin said, “It’s very important for us for the US market,” although he said that the unit will also be of benefit for the European market given its ability to repair roads quickly and cheaply. “It’s a cold process so you can work in winter,” he added.
EFFICIENT REPAIRS FROM SIMEX
The machine has a working width of 1m and can cut to a maximum depth of 100mm, although Ferrin said that in use, 30-70mm is more typical. Ferrin added, “We are working on smaller and larger versions,” although he said that these will only be ready for market in 2-3 years.

Novel cold mix plant
Fayat subsidiary SAE is offering a novel cold mix system that is said to offer extra versatility for asphalt plants. The system is said to be adaptable for any plant installation, as long as there is suf cient room. A spokesperson for the rm said, “It can be implemented on any asphalt plant from any manufacturer with any software.”
The unit can allow a conventional asphalt plant to produce a quality cold mix, but at a much lower cost than a dedicated cold mix plant. The spokesperson said, “It’s a very compact design and ts inside a standard shipping container.”
The plant is said to be highly versatile and can use virgin materials or high percentages of RAP in the feed. Water injection, different binders and a range of additives can be used to suit the materials and application. By positioning the pugmill next to the plant, this makes the system easier to handle according to SAE and output can be up to 200tonnes/hour. SAE also says that this plant can help producers meet targets on decarbonising their operations. The spokesperson commented, “By de nition it is decarbonised because there’s no heating.”

MARINI’S EFFICIENT EVODRYER
Marini’s efficient EvoDryer system is said to offer high efficiency and high quality for asphalt batching applications, while the firm has also unveiled its prototype hydrogen burner. The EvoDryer drum is now longer and the burner has been redesigned to ensure performance is maximised. A key feature of the reconfigured design is the reduction of blue smoke from the pugmill and discharge areas. Blue smoke is collected and filtered to minimise emissions. Meanwhile, the air out of the drum is also filtered to reduce emissions. And the hot air is also recirculated into the drum, boosting efficiency and reducing
fuel consumption. Recirculating the air also reduces the emissions from the plant, a major boost for environmental performance.
The firm says that its innovative hydrogen burner will be able to use up to 100% hydrogen in the feed. The burner can also run on natural gas and LPG and can be adapted to use any mix of these fuels with hydrogen. The firm says that delivering hydrogen to sites using gas bottles poses challenges at present and suggests that having hydrogen piped or small electrolysers to produce hydrogen at commercial operations might be more suitable solutions. www.marini.fayat.com
Ammann’s emissions reduction system
The advanced VRD filtration system from Ammann is able to remove a significant level of emissions, as well as being selfcleaning. The Ammann VOC Reduction Device (VRD) reduces volatile organic compounds (VOCs), odours and other organic carbon emissions. It is the first technology on the market able to self-clean; no filter replacements are needed.
“To have the performance and efficiency of VRD in a self-cleaning system is a significant benefit for businesses,” Marzio Ferrini said.
The patented technology means that there is no need for filter replacements and plant uptime is optimised. The modular VRD system is compatible with virtually every type of asphalt mixing plant, including those from other manufacturers. The system reduces total organic carbon (TOC), which contains VOCs, by as much as 70% under working conditions.
The VRD removes the TOC. In addition, it makes using RAP greener, as a high percentage of VOCs occur while recycling. The system only needs a power supply and onsite space for implementation and requires no special software or upgrades. It can be included in the purchase of a new plant and can be retrofitted to existing plants, while it is also easy to transport and install. The VRD is a key component of the firm’s Green Plant Initiative, intended to improving the sustainability of asphalt production.

POWER CURBERS EXPANDING RANGE
Power Curbers is expanding its range of concrete slipformers to meet customer demand. President of the company is Stephen Bullock and he explained that the firm is now offering a new version of its successful 5700-D slipformer aimed particularly at customers in Europe.
The existing 5700-D model runs on three tracks but the new 5700-D4 is a fourtrack machine. Bullock said, “This is just to reach that market that wants a four-track machine.”
He said that some customers prefer the perceived stability of the four-track configuration, while others are more keen on the tighter turning and more compact features of the three-track layout.
With this development, Power Curbers is now able to meet demands for both preferences. For ease of transport it has a folding belt conveyor. Other specifications such as the wide range of molds, the ability to work with stringless controls, its maximum slipforming height or paving
Zero emissions emulsions spraying
Secmair is offering a zero emissions solution for emulsions spraying. A spokesperson for the firm said, “It’s 100% electric.”
Instead of being modified from a diesel model, the machine has been designed from the ground up to run from electric power. The machine also features extra heat insulation compared to the firm’s conventional models and the spokesperson said, “Particular attention has been made to double the thermal efficiency.”
The spraying system does not take power from the truck motor and instead runs from a battery pack. There is sufficient battery power for the machine to complete a working shift and a fast charging system is fitted. In addition, solar panels on the roof can double the working time on sunny days.
Using electric power, the machine can work during the day without causing a disturbance and the spokesperson commented, “It can operate silently.”
The machine looks unlike previous generation emulsion sprayers and the spokesperson said, “It looks more like a delivery truck.”
In addition, the firm is now offering an improved version of its Chipsealer, 40 years after the first model was launched. This now comes with a smart control system with a touchscreen in the cab and a joystick control. www.secmair.fayat.com
width are the same as for the three-track machine.
To further boost the versatility of the new 5700-D4, the machine can be switched quickly between paving on the left side of the machine to paving on the right. Bullock said that this is another feature often preferred by customers in Europe. However, he added, “It’s available now and we’re building the first one which has been sold to a customer in the US.”

E-MAK supplying asphalt plants to Europe
Turkish rm E-MAK is now supplying its asphalt plants to customers in Europe. The rst plant is already commissioned in Bilbao in Spain, with a second being delivered shortly to a customer in the UK. The machine going to the UK is being supplied to a Derbybased rm that has previously concentrated on the concrete precasting and ready-mix market but is now widening its operations to include supplying asphalt. The rm is buying one of the E-MAK Express batching plants, which will offer a rated capacity of 160tonnes/ hour.
Meanwhile, E-MAK also has high hopes for its proven Challenger aggregates storage system for customers in Europe. This machine can be used to
receive considerable quantities of large aggregates, then crushing and screening the materials before storing them inside. Using the Challenger can provide signi cant energy savings for asphalt production as the aggregates are stored in a dry place, reducing the amount of heating and fuel required by the asphalt plant.
Ac Emre Gencer at E-MAK commented, “According to our tests you can save a minimum of 38% of energy in asphalt production and that can rise to 62% in winter.”
Given the need to reduce the carbon footprint of materials production for construction, E-MAK believes it has a credible solution that can deliver major bene ts to contractors.

WIRTGEN’S COMPACT MILL
Wirtgen is introducing its W 150 Fi planer, a mid-sized machine that now benefits from technology first seen in the firm’s larger mills.
Power comes from a 9litre John Deere diesel delivering 313kW that meets the Tier 4 Final/Stage V emissions requirements.
The machine is designed to cut a 1.5m width to a depth of 330mm, though it can be fitted with different width drums as well as a range of tooth patterns to suit the needs of the customer and the work being carried out.
Key features of this new generation mill are the enclosed cab option and sophisticated Mill Assist package, both of which are already proven on the larger planers in the range.
The advanced Mill Assist system is of particular benefit as it has been shown to help optimise performance and a spokesperson for the firm said, “Now we’ve put it into the compact machine too.”
The spokesperson explained that the new performance tracker capabilities of this machine also allow the user to monitor the area being cut, tonnage of material being removed and the quantity of material going into each truck.
“The performance tracker takes care of all that job data. We can see live data from the machine at the site and its performance on our smartphones.”
He added that the planer is highly versatile and with its
new John Deere engine, offers a better integration of power and torque to machine performance, delivering a 30% gain in efficiency.
Meanwhile, dual fans ensure efficient cooling and make it
quieter in operation, while the improved efficiency in the cutter drum means it uses less water in operation, allowing paving to be carried out closer and sooner afterwards.

SMART COMPACTION FROM DYNAPAC
DHe added, “The seismic system adjusts the frequency every 0.2 seconds.”
The system is now offered as an option on the new rigid frame CX 8C and CX 9C models, which have drum widths of 1.5m and 1.7m and weights of 8tonnes and 9tonnes respectively.
These models have also now been upgraded to the Generation 6 level seen earlier on the 6, 10 and 13tonne class machine. Meanwhile, the 6, 10 and 13tonne Generation 6 models will be made available in Seismic form as an option later in the year.
He explained that as temperature is a critical factor for stiffness in asphalt compaction and because the material is in layers, the system required heat sensors to be installed and more complex algorithms to be developed. As with the system for soil compaction, the technology allows drum vibration to match
ynapac is making an important introduction to its asphalt compaction line in the shape of its innovative Seismic technology. First developed for use in soil compaction, the resonant frequency, self-sensing Seismic system is now available as an option for the more complex asphalt compaction segment. A spokesperson for Dynapac said, “It was more complicated and took five years of R&D and needed a lot of testing.”
Ammann’s new continuous plant
Ammann is now offering a continuous type asphalt plant for customers in the North American market. Designed and developed in the US but bene ting from experience from Europe, the new plant will be manufactured in a new facility that Ammann is setting up in the US.
The new Ammann Alpina plant will be able to produce from 270-540tonnes/hour of asphalt and features a drum mixer design aimed at North American market needs. Marzio Ferrini of Ammann commented, “We are going to open our new factory and it will be built there. It’s a product speci cally for that market.”
He said that the plant will be able to use suf cient percentages of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) in the feed to meet US market needs. www.ammann.com
the resonant frequency of the asphalt course to provide optimum compaction.
Because the system matches the compaction forces required to the characteristics for a specific section of surface, it also offers another important benefit as the spokesperson said, “You will never damage the aggregate.” This avoids the risk of aggregate being cracked or crushed by compaction forces.
To meet French requirements these Generation 6 drum steer machines deliver 0.8mm of amplitude and benefit from larger eccentric weights and reinforced bearings. This specification is now the standard for the CX models. The vibration system itself is conventional though and does not require any special maintenance as the core of the technology is in the control unit, while it is said to be simple for the operator to use.
Other key benefits for the Seismic option are reduced operating noise, less vibration for the machine (reducing wear and tear and fatigue for the operator) and lower fuel consumption. The spokesperson said, “We estimate around 10% fuel savings.”

ERMONT’S VERSATILE ASPHALT PLANTS
Ermont says it is now seeing strong interest for its novel TSX continuous asphalt plant technology, which is available in both stationary and highway portable versions. The design features a single drum and a single burner but is able to deliver a mix containing a high percentage of recycled material. Romain Thommerot, marketing and communications officer for the firm commented, “We have a RAP capacity of 70%.”
The stationary technology can deliver more varieties of product for the customer such as clear binders, semi warm asphalt and even cold mix. However, the portable plants are also versatile by their very nature.
The design of the TSX system allows for changes in the feed, while ensuring quality of the output remains constantly high. The firm is commissioning the first stationary plant using the technology in the second
quarter of 2024. “We already have some TSX HIGHWAY plants commissioned.”
The TSX HIGHWAY models are available in three versions, the TSX23, TSX26 and TSX28. These offer outputs of 120-270tonnes/ hour, 160-380tonnes/hour and 200-450tonnes/hour respectively. All three can use up to 70% RAP in the feed. The TSX stationary plants are available in the TSX23 INCITY, TSX26 INCITY
and TSX28 INCITY variants, with the same outputs as the Highway versions. In addition, the firm is also offering its TRX plant in INCITY stationary and HIGHWAY transportable versions.
The former offers capacities from 150-360tonnes/hour and can use up to 80% RAP in the feed, while the latter offers capacities from 150-430tonnes/ hour and can use up to 100% RAP in the feed.

Wirtgen rolls out rock crusher for road construction
Wirtgen has rolled out the Rock Crusher WRC 240(i) for layer processing in road construction. The WRC 240(i) breaks coarse rocks in-situ, as found in hand-packed pavement layers (e.g. Telford bases) or stony soils, and produces a homogeneous mix in a continuous process. The working width of 2,320mm and a working depth of up to 510mm enables an output of up to 600tonnes per hour.
The WRC 240(i) expands Wirtgen’s portfolio of wheeled soil stabilisers designed especially for the processing of stony ground. In addition to the crushing of rocks and stones with an
edge length of up to 300mm and a compressive strength of up to 200 MPa, the machine can add cement and water in the same pass, for instance in the preparation of base layers.
Here, the cement is pre-spread with a binding agent spreader and the water required is sprayed into the mixing chamber of the Rock Crusher via the machine’s Varioinjection bar.
The machine can also be used for soil stabilisation.
For this application, the pre-spread binding agents such as lime or cement are mixed into the existing soil with insufficient bearing
capacity, transform it in-situ into a high-grade construction material and deposit it evenly behind the machine.
The main task of the WRC is the granulation and mixing of a variety of soils, courses and layers to produce a homogeneous final product in a continuous process.
In contrast to the removal and replacement of material, the processes here are characterised by shorter construction times, conservation of resources and lower CO2 emissions.

Duratray International highlights dump body smarts
Duratray International’s Smart Tray is the most advanced dump tray for mining and construction trucks. The Smart Tray can monitor its structural and wear condition automatically and report to the user online and in real time.
Duratray is a major global name in designing and fabricating innovative, customised dump bodies with capacities from 40 to 400tonnes.
Over 2,000 Duratray dump bodies operate in mines and quarries worldwide, including at Tarmac’s giant Mountsorrel quarry in Leicestershire, central England. Six Duratrays are working well on the site’s Cat 777G trucks.
Duratray dump bodies are fabricated in each region to reduce transport costs while maximising the allowable payload. The novel suspended floor design also significantly reduces noise contamination.
The dump bodies are designed to handle materials such as aggregates, copper, gold, nickel, diamonds, bauxite, manganese, coal, iron ore and mineral sands.
The Duratray dump body benefits are said to include higher payload capacity, lower maintenance costs, reduced carryback where applicable, high resistance to extreme abrasion and significantly reduced loading noise. www.duratray.com
Volvo CE is taking a leading role in developing low carbon technologies for use in the aggregates production and construction markets. The company has launched numerous machines running on electric power but one of its most prominent research and development projects has been for its fuel-cell powered ADT.
However, the HX04 dump truck is not intended as a prototype for an imminent production model for the aggregate production or earthmoving markets. David Forget is a key member of the engineering team who has worked on the project and explained, “It’s a functional prototype.” He continued that it forms part of the firm’s investigation into different possible drive systems for future machines. “It is a vision of Volvo and we are exploring new technologies.”
As this is a working research project rather than the final design for an upcoming production model, the machine only has a 20tonne payload. Similarly, its four high-pressure hydrogen tanks (at 700bars) allow a working time of around four hours, which would be insufficient for a full working shift. He commented, “The tank is a very sensitive part. There’s carbon around the tank for strength and it has a liner to prevent hydrogen leakage.” Meanwhile, the fuel cell itself
FINDING A LOW CARBON PATHWAY
is the product of a joint venture between Volvo and Mercedes and has had to be well-protected against the tough ADT application. He added, “A fuelcell hates vibration and dust.”
Power to the wheels comes from three electric motors mounted in each of the three axles, which means the truck does away with the need for a torque converter and driveshafts. Heavily protected cables run through the
articulation joint, instead of a conventional driveline.
He said that the electric drive offers some benefits too as the motor controls allow the machine to switch between 6WD, 4WD and 2WD, depending on the running conditions.
Electro-magnetic braking is also available and the drive system can be regenerative on downhill slopes, charging the 50kW battery system mounted

AMMANN’S STEERABLE ROLLER
Ammann is offering an innovation in the shape of its ARW 65-S walkbehind Roller, which features articulated steering. This allows the user to guide the machine more accurately forward, backward, and laterally.
The new S version has a pivoting mechanism, unlike the prior version which only enables forward and reverse
movements. With the S version, the machine can also be moved to the right and left using the control handle.
direction by pressing one of the two buttons on the steering unit.
The drawbar is shorter, which also makes the machine more compact, improving handling and making transport easier.
The ARW 65-S can be used for both soil and asphalt compaction and that is still the case with the new version. The 0.3mm amplitude setting suits the roller for compacting soil and substructures. The operator can switch to a lower amplitude of 0.15mm for compacting asphalt and bitumen. The machine has two scrapers on every drum and a 60litre water tank with sprinkler system, suiting it to use on asphalt surfaces.
It is available with engines from Hatz, Honda and Yanmar and an electric starter is standard for all three. The height-adjustable handle is designed to prevent unwanted vibration from reaching the operator. The roller offers clearance on both drum sides, allowing compaction work close to kerbs, retaining walls and road barriers.
The lateral movement provides a key advantage. Body weight is not required to direct the machine, reducing operator fatigue, eliminating surface irregularities, and providing consistency throughout the shift.
“The lateral control makes operating the machine much
easier – and much more precise,” said Ralf Brutschin, strategic commercial manager for Light Equipment at Ammann. “The steering results in increased productivity, efficiency and quality.”
A hydraulic drum swivel enables the movement when going forward or backward. The drum swivels 15º to the left and right.
The operator controls the
The roller is built without mechanical fast-wearing parts such as V belts and a clutch, helping reduce maintenance needs. In addition, no special tools are required for daily maintenance work.
The ergonomic guide handle includes a feature that puts the machine in the neutral position if the operator releases grip. In reverse mode, the speed limit is set to 2.5km/h for safety.

Bucket versatility
An innovative system from French firm IEV could allow customers to use a wheeled loader to take the place of a grader onsite. The quick attachment system offers 30° of rotation to either left or right for the wheeled loader bucket. Used in conjunction with machine control technology from Leica Geosystems to adjust bucket angle, the IEV attachment system allows a loader to take the place of a grader for many duties such as haul road maintenance or preparation duties. However, a sideshift feature has not been developed so far.
Using a wheeled loader for grading work allows a customer to reduce costs as when the grading work is complete, the machine can then be utilised for other tasks simply by changing the attachment. This does away with the need for a dedicated grader to handle the work, increasing machine utilisation and reducing fleet costs.
A range of attachments are available to suit varying sizes of loaders, from compact to mid-sized.
For the customer this system offers the potential for major savings on equipment, while boosting fleet utilisation and versatility. In addition, a wheeled loader can also be transported easily from site to site.

DIGITALISATION AT THE JOBSITE
Bomag is introducing new capabilities for construction with the launch of its latest Asphalt Pro system.
The package is able to supply information to everyone involved in a project and regarding every stage of the materials supply and use. Users can receive the data on a tablet device or smartphone.
A spokesperson for the firm commented, “It’s capable of organising everything from the mixing plant to truck distribution to the paver and compaction. Everybody gets the same information.”
Should a paver fail onsite, this information is sent straight to the mix plant for example, so that truck loads can be stopped and costly
material wastage minimised. Similarly, the paver will be able to tell when trucks will arrive with materials for paving.
Useful information includes comparing the theoretical asphalt tonnage supplied with the actual tonnage used.
If the theoretical quantities match the actual tonnages used, then this highlights the efficiency of a paving operation. But if there is a large disparity, it lets the paver operator know that the screed needs adjustment.
The sophisticated digitalisation package also allows users to reduce CO2 emissions as it helps to minimise energy use. www.bomag.com

Clean power offering from Deutz
Deutz is introducing an engine that will run on hydrogen as well as electric power retrofit options for off-highway machines. These form part of the firm’s programme aimed at reducing carbon emissions.
This programme represents a substantial investment in research & development for Deutz. Bert van Hasselt, head of Sales and Service for Deutz’s BU Green division said, “We are investing €100 million until the end of next year.”
The new hydrogen engine in testing is the TCG7.8H2 unit, a 7.8litre engine that will deliver 228kW. The first production units will be manufactured in the third quarter of 2024 and will be aimed at genset or rail applications initially, with an order of 100 units being supplied to China. However, once the units have been
proven in these applications further duties will be available, including installations into construction machines. According to van Hasselt, the continuing high price of hydrogen as a fuel means that the unit sales will remain low until a better hydrogen supply infrastructure (and more reasonable fuel pricing) becomes available.
The system can be used in a wide array of applications and is of benefit to firms running mixed fleets of machines as it allows them to use the same modular battery technology. The power units can be exchanged between different pieces of equipment if required. According to the firm, the system is already being accepted by equipment dealers and comes with warranties.
Meanwhile, the remote power solution allows rental firms to deliver the batteries to customers for operating site office lighting, computers, heating or air conditioning as required.
The rental firm will be able to monitor power levels remotely and deliver freshly charged batteries when needed. Customers can choose from 70kW or 140kW batteries and these use a common base unit. The package also includes a smart controller, thermal kit and energy management app providing, “…an intelligent energy module…” according to the company.

In the meantime, Deutz believes its electrification retrofit package will be of interest for customers with existing fleets of equipment that is still comparatively new. These can be tailored to a wide range of equipment applications. According to van Hasselt, “We can retrofit equipment with diesel engines with an electric system. It’s part of the transition into the new world.”

THE NEW SUPER SOILMEC HYDROMILL
An iconic metro station in the heart of Rome is destined to become the world’s most beautiful ‘archaeostation’. It is the new Piazza Venezia station on Rome’s metro line C, commissioned by Roma Metropolitane and built by the consortium company Metro C S.c.p.a., led by Webuild and Vianini Lavori.
Accessing the 8 underground levels, one will have the sensation of entering a real museum, open to citizens and the millions of tourists passing through it. At a depth of 45m, with perimeter walls retaining the excavation reaching 85m, the new Piazza Venezia station will be a museum among museums, just a few steps away from the Colosseum and the Imperial Forums.
This major work, a challenge that will bring into play the best Italian engineering skills, will be carried out in phases, and will see the construction of perimeter diaphragms 85m deep from street level, guaranteeing excavation in “archaeological mode” through the so-called top-down method.
The newest Soilmec Hydromill will be used for this job. Soilmec is the engineering division of the Trevi Group, a world leader
in soil engineering. Tiger SC-130 is a true technological jewel. The hydromill, with a height of 24.5m and a weight of 185tons, is a giant that combines technology and design to speed up work times and operate with greater precision and in smaller spaces, reducing noise and vibrations on the surface. The machine is imposing but also compact at the same time.
The SC-130 Tiger is equipped with an HDD system, a platform with hydraulic and mud winders positioned above the machine body. This system allows for reaching high excavation depths; for the SC-130 Tiger up to 120m.
Considerable attention was also paid to safety. The new SC-130 Tiger is equipped with walkways with handrails and ladders for easy access to the various machine levels; an 8-camera system for perfect perimeter control around the machine; a spacious cab with a touchscreen monitor for the DMS system (Drilling Mate System, the software that, among other things, manages the verticality of the excavation); and radio controls for safe operations such as cutting tool changes and other tasks. www.soilmec.com
