Wiltshire’s family events really are back in full swing now and the last few months have been slightly chaotic for everyone as the full implications of normal life, including planning ahead, have dawned on us. But, like the bluebells that burst forth at this time of year, a positive riot of family festivals, fetes, markets workshops and kids’ theatre shows adorn these pages. Most excitingly, we celebrate 70 years of royal stability with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee this summer (P4).

But, not to forget the importance of reading, Cressida Cowell updates us on her exciting campaign to reinvigorate school libraries (P5). Whether celebrating in the streets or ensconced in a book, have a great May Half Term.

W

iltshire is hosting all manner of events to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of The Queen, who’s reigned for 70 years, and in traditional style, many communities are hosting street parties and picnics to mark the occasion.

Coate Water Country Park in Swindon kicks off the celebrations with free entry to its annual fun fair (Sat 28 May-Sun 5 Jun), complete with plenty of rides and games from Royal Wootton Bassett’s George Scarrott Fun Fairs. Proceeds from the event go to the Bright Minds charity.

Trowbridge Museum hosts a workshop where children make their own Jubilee bunting (Tue 31 May). The workshop is free and tickets can be picked up at

the front desk. REME Museum in Lyneham, meanwhile, has a Jubilee trail through the museum (Thu 2-Sun 5 Jun) where children will be able to learn about the Queen’s reign and the work she has done with the military.

There’s a week-long exhibition dedicated to her life at Warminster Civic Centre, too. It opens on Mon 30 May. There’s also a fun fair and family activities there on Sat 4 Jun. Fingers crossed for nice weather over the Jubilee weekend because lots of communities are heading outdoors for their celebrations. Salisbury and Swindon both invite people to bring their picnics for a community celebration with music and entertain-

If you prefer to keep your picnic basket tucked away, however, Trowbridge hosts a Village Day in North Bradley Peace Memorial Hall (Sat 4 Jun), with families enjoying food stalls, candy floss and bouncy castles. Bradford on Avon also throws a Jubilee event with food thanks to Lacock Dairy and Fresh Kitchen – with wine for the adults from Cru Wines. It’s all taking place in partnership with the Alex Moulton Trust at The Hall (Sun 5 Jun), with live music from Wiltshire Jazz Academy and Glastonbury Brass and a Punch and Judy show. Tickets are from the Tourist Information Centre or online. In Corsham, meanwhile, the Box Revels team is working hard to prepare a memorable Jubilee weekend (Fri 3-Sun 5 Jun) with every day packed with different events.

Cricklade’s regular Father’s Day celebration is now hosted at Cricklade Leisure Centre, organising what promises to be a colourful event for the Platinum Jubilee on Sun 5 June. Dress up in red, white and blue and take part in or simply watch Cricklade’s Got Talent with performances from the local drum school, while a fun

The owners of The Crown in Bishops Canning are passionate Royalists and promise their Jubilee event (Sat 4 Jun) will be a true extravaganza. There’s a fun Royal Corgi show for dogs of all breeds and a Royal Swan Race on the stream behind the pub - like a duck race, but more royal. Children can enter a fancy dress competition and everyone’s invited to enter for the tug-ofwar. Music starts from 2.15pm, with live bands and a barbecue.

Money raised on the day goes to the Ukraine appeal and Royal British Legion.

Belonging in sports T

his year’s National School Sport Week aims to get more than one million children across the country taking part in school sport. Taking place from 20-26 June, the campaign takes the theme of ‘Belonging - a place in sport for every child’ and is all about getting more young people to have fun by doing sport, especially after the huge disruption caused by the Covid pandemic.

Schools, teachers, parents and organisations can all do their bit to raise awareness of the importance of school sport and play by signing up to both pledge their support for the campaign and receive free resources from its organisers the Youth Sports Trust to help spread the word.

Everyone who signs up via the website will also be invited to join

in five ‘one a day’ physical activity fundraising challenges taking place during the week itself.

“School sport should be an important part of every child’s education and development every child should feel they have a place to belong,” the Youth Sports Trust says. “There is so much that all young people can gain from school sport - connecting with others, developing important life skills and improving both their physical and mental health.”

Fun at the racecourse A fter a popular family meeting in May, Salisbury Racecourse hosts another child-friendly event, the Cathedral Stakes Family Fun Day on Sunday 12 June.

With gates opening at 12 noon, families are encouraged to bring a picnic and enjoy the host of children’s entertainment, including popular local DJ, Disco Dion (pictured, inset) and bouncy castles. not to mention an afternoon of thrilling racing.

All entertainment is free once inside the course, while entry for children aged 17 or under (accompanied by an adult) is also free.

If they love horses and the racing world, the thunder of hooves starts with the first race at 2.05pm, with the last race at 5.35pm. And, while a picnic on a sunny day would delight everyone, organisers say there’s a brilliant atmosphere whatever the weather.

Cressida’s library findings due soon

I

n an interview with Primary Times, the Waterstones Children’s Laureate Cressida Cowell says parents can expect the results of her year-long pilot projects into school libraries this June.

Cowell launched her Lifechanging Libraries campaign last year, urging the government to reverse long-term underfunding of libraries both in school and the community.

She has piloted new libraries in six primary schools over the last year. “It has been extraordinary to see how these beautiful new spaces have become the beating heart of these schools,” she says, pointing out that one in eight

Nostalgia ahoy!

Vintage Nostalgia Festival is a fun-filled nostalgic weekend of live music, dance, classic cars, children’s entertainment and retro shopping. Thousands of vintage enthusiasts and classic car owners will be there along with hundreds of cars from the 1920s to the 1980s on display.

Visitors are encouraged to wear period clothes and there’s a competition to find the best dressed.

The festival’s a great way to unwind with family and friends in the beautiful countryside of Stockton Park and there’s plenty to keep you occupied, whether watching re-enactors’ vintage theatrics, getting busy in the children’s activity and entertainment zone or enjoying the lineup of live music and dance. You can visit for a day or stay for the whole weekend in the boutique camping area.

Nature’s new arrivals

Hope Nature Centre in Southwick Country Park has had plenty of new arrivals this spring and recently welcomed three baby alpacas, as well as some new rare-breed Valais sheep.

“Our new arrivals have been very popular with our visitors, and we’re hoping to start offering alpaca walks this summer, as they are incredibly friendly” said Jane Ord, manager of the charity animal park and café.

The new animal arrivals also offer on-site learning opportunities for the young people with learning and physical disabilities who are training and gaining work experience at the centre with Wiltshire-based charity the Fairfield Farm Trust.

By visiting the newly arrived animals at Hope Nature Centre and enjoying refreshments in the on-site café, you’ll be supporting the charity and helping to offer new opportunities to its students and trainees too.

Helping children with anxiety The Parenting with Anxiety Project at the University of Sussex is focused on finding ways to help parents and children navigate the world with confidence.

If you feel anxious, you may find yourself feeling worried about your children. The project’s research shows that with the right support parents can help their children become more confident.

The team now wants to find out if families will benefit from an eight-module online course. If you would describe yourself as high in anxiety with a child aged 2-11, then they would like to hear from you. Half of the parents will do the course and the others will just answer questions, but everyone is playing an important role in helping children with anxiety.

It is packed with colour including a wonderful Yellow Brick Road, like the one in the ‘Wizard of Oz’, and dotted with Easter eggs, hearts and bunting.
