Editor’s Letter Hello! Welcome to the Christmas and New Year edition of Primary Times in Essex. This is my favourite magazine of the year. Reading through all the fabulous diary dates in Roundabout and the Christmas shopping feature I get excited at all that is to come!

Thinking ahead to the New Year and the possibility of trying something new and different, we shine the spotlight on Theatre Schools and performing arts in Essex (see p16).

Get ready for the Big Garden Birdwatch 2017 The next Big Garden Birdwatch will take place from 28th to 30th January 2017. Over half a million people counted more than eight million birds in the 2016 Big Garden Birdwatch, and expectations are high that 2017 could be even bigger. The survey is part of the RSPB’s Giving Nature a Home campaign, which aims to tackle the housing crisis facing the UK’s threatened wildlife.

To take part, watch the birds in your garden (or local park) for one hour over the weekend.

Only count the birds that land in your garden, not those flying over. Count the highest number of each bird species you see at any one time – not the total you see in the hour.

Jump Street Chelmsford to open in December Jump Street, the new trampoline park on the Dukes Park estate in Chelmsford, will open to the public on Sat 17th December. The 55,000 square foot trampoline park will offer the world’s largest Clip’n Climb centre, containing over 30 different climbs including three Extreme Challenges: ‘Vertical Drop Slide’, ‘Stairway to Heaven’ and ‘Leap of Faith’.

Plus, two trampoline dodgeball courts, a wipeout machine, Olympic trampolines with a dedicated area for trampoline tuition, a slam dunk area, a giant inflatable bag with two runway trampolines and an enormous free jump area. Plus, a Ninja Warrior course is already under construction and will open early in 2017. From 9th January, Jump Street Chelmsford will offer Jump Tots sessions for under-fives, birthday parties and corporate events, dodgeball tournaments, themed nights and a range of fitness classes. Recycle for Essex’s Waste Less Christmas Guide (without the humbug) We all know the benefits of recycling our gift wrap, crackers and Christmas trees but in the run up to the festive season ECC Recyling have some useful tips to help you waste less and have a super green Christmas.

1. By planning ahead you can work out which items you really need during the festivities and holidays to avoid over-buying food, decorations and gifts.

2. Opt for reusable bags for your shopping; disposable bags are used for an average of 20 minutes before being thrown away.

3. Choose products with less packaging, from the moment of purchase you can often choose

Time for festive fayres, markets and switching on of Christmas lights!

Here’s a selection of events taking place throughout Essex from late November through to mid December.

Sun 4th December Festive fun for all the family at the Christmas Market on Billericay High Street. Entry is free, as is Santa’s Grotto and Punch ‘n’ Judy. Santa’s Parade, led by a pipe and drum band, to his Grotto starts at 11am. The car park also has donkey rides and small funfair rides for the youngsters and for all the family. With live entertainment on two stages, carols in the church and lots of traditional Christmas fayre, hog roasts and mulled wine, Continental market and much more. 11am-5pm. Chelmsford Sun 27th November Come and watch the Christmas glow illuminate Chelmsford town centre at the Christmas light switch on. Heart Radio presenters Martin and Sue will host this year’s event, showcasing a sparkling mix of local and professional talent from the stage outside Shire Hall.

Cheer on the entertainers who will light up the stage from 2pm until the event finishes with the light switch on and a firework finale at 4.45pm. This is the perfect opportunity for those who wish to do a bit of Christmas shopping. www.chelmsford.gov.uk/christmas-lights

The Guild of Essex Craftsmen are hosting a Crafts for Christmas event at Hylands House. There will be over 40 craft stalls and craft demonstrations will also be taking place throughout the day.

hristmas is one of the most expensive times of the year so why not cut down on expenses while getting your children into the kitchen at the same time. Unlike socks or aftershave, food gifts are rarely unwanted.

The main difference between something home-made and a shop-bought treat is price, and with clever packaging, a home-made treat can be even more eye-catching than its commercial equivalent. The more ‘down

Mini Christmas Pudding Rice Krispie Cakes

Christmas Coconut Truffles

The Rice Krispie cake has to be one of the easiest recipes ever created. It is next to impossible to fail and best of all, everyone loves them.

Ingredients:

50g Rice Krispies/popped rice cereal 50g Butter • 100g Milk Chocolate 80g White Chocolate Pre-made icing holly leaves

Method:

Melt the chocolate and butter together and mix well.

Put the Rice Krispies into a large bowl, add the melted chocolate and mix until every ‘Krispie’ is coated in chocolate.

Shape the mixture into little ‘puddings’ and put in the fridge until set.

Melt the white chocolate and dribble over the puddings. Top with the premade holly leaves and again leave in the fridge until completely set.

Presentation & Wrapping:

Use a large dinner plate to draw around and cut out a large circle of cellophane. Place a mound of ‘puddings’ in the middle and take the edges of the cellophane up to cover the mound. Hold together with an elastic band or Sellotape, then tie with twine and a handmade label.

Truffles are a perennial favourite and incredibly easy to make...

Ingredients:

200ml Double Cream 200g Dark Chocolate (minimum 70% Cocoa Solids) 200g Desiccated Coconut

Method:

Chop the chocolate into small pieces and put in a mixing bowl.

In a saucepan, bring the cream gently to the boil.

Pour the cream over the chocolate and stir until both ingredients are completely blended and smooth.

Leave the mixture in the fridge until it becomes solid.

Using a teaspoon, scoop out small pieces of the mixture and roll into bitesized balls.

Roll each individual ball in coconut until it is completely covered.

Presentation & Wrapping:

You can wrap these in cellophane just like the Christmas Pudding Rice Krispie Cakes. Or line a small brown cardboard box with tissue paper and use twine to secure it. Add a handmade label made of brown cardboard.

Edible Garlands

Edible decorations such as gingerbread shapes and candy canes have been a staple on Christmas trees for a long time. The following edible garlands are so simple to make that even the smallest members of the family can help. They can be used to decorate your own home or can be given as gifts.

Ingredients:

A large sewing needle and thread.

Popcorn, marshmallows, and dried fruit such as cranberries work well.

Method:

Double your thread to increase its strength and thread on the ingredients.

Tie off the ends and hey presto! – It’s that simple!

Presentation & Wrapping:

If you’re using these garlands as decorations then simplicity is key.

Use one or two ingredients for an authentic rustic feel.

If you are planning on giving the garlands as gifts you can add all sorts of decorations – melted chocolate, edible glitter and more – let the kids take over! Then twizzle the garland into a large glass jar and tie with a ribbon and child’s handmade label.

Essex Stars: Cheerleading, Dance and Tumble Essex Stars opened its door in 2009 renting out a badminton court. From here it is has continued to grow and thrive into the biggest cheerleading, dance and gymnastics centre in Essex.

It has its own, purpose built, facility with a cheerleading floor, dance room and gymnastics room. Essex Stars hold recreational and competition classes in cheerleading, dance and tumble for all ages during the week.

Currently they hold the regional and national champion title in cheerleading for all ages. The next competition is November 2016. When the fox is caught and put in cage to be killed Sol convinces his father to take the fox and go back to the Arctic.They visit his grandparents at the same time, a momentous decision that will change their lives.This is a really touching story of a boy and his father getting to know each other again while coming to terms with their grief.

It is beautifully presented with large print and occasional gorgeous full page illustrations. Great for struggling or reluctant readers.

This is a highly emotive story with tense moments that pull at your heart strings, a tissue might be needed! Medium length novel.

As a private investigator, 12 year old Howard’s cases have been quite small until he is hired to discover the identity of a blackmailer. He works alone until new girl, Ivy, convinces him to let her work as a junior partner. She soon proves to be an asset, and Howard finds it is nice to have a friend as they banter their way through some confusing clues.

Just as they seem to be about to break the case, Howard breaks one school rule too many instead, could his detecting days be over for good? This is an excellent, pacey mystery story with engaging main characters who invest plenty of humour into it. Full length novel.
