Milstead & Frinsted Church of England Primary School

Welcome
“Everyone getting what they need, making the most of every opportunity so that no moment is wasted.”
On behalf of the children, staff and Governors I would like to warmly welcome you to Milstead &Frinsted C of E Primary school. We very proud to be part of such a vibrant, happy and caring community where children are firmly at the heart of everything we do. Our school is a fantastic place to grow, play and learn - set in beautiful rural surroundings, learning happens in an idyllic historic school building built in 1848 surrounded by woodlands and orchards.
Our community is developed through our Christian vision which is based on the Parable of Jesus’ feeding of the 5000 (John 6:1-14):
We are a community that is compassionate and nurturing to ensure that we grow not only as individuals but as a collective. Learning together as a community so that everyone gets what they need, making the most of every opportunity, and ensuring no moment is wasted. Through our school we empower inquisitive stewards of the future who continue to give and grow. Just as Jesus blessed the food and it multiplied may we continue to multiply and grow; spiritually, emotionally, and academically.
Children not only flourish academically but we also want our children to demonstrate inquiry, resilience, compassion, and stewardship and
live out our Christian Values everywhere they go. Our faith and Christian values underpin the inclusive and welcoming ethos of our school.
We are passionate about developing the whole child and strive to provide a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum enriched through a wide range of opportunities to the develop the social, moral, spiritual and cultural knowledge and skills of all our children and prepare them for further education and becoming stewards for life.
There is something very special about Milstead and as our school continues to grow we warmly welcome prospective parents to visit our school and see this first hand.

Our Teaching Approach
Principles
The principles of our teaching and learning policy are firmly grounded in established educational research, drawing notably from the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) and the insights of cognitive load theorists, such as John Sweller and Rosenshine’s Principles of Direct Instruction. Our primary aim is to facilitate an environment conducive to effective learning, where knowledge and skills are acquired in a manner that promotes retention and understanding.
Central to our approach is a structured teaching framework that encompasses four key phases: revisit, teach, practice, and apply. The revisiting phase is crucial as it helps to reduce cognitive load, allowing learners to make explicit connections between prior and new knowledge. During the teaching phase, high-quality instruction is imperative, as it lays the foundation for effective feedback, further enhancing the learning process.
Subsequently, the practice phase affords pupils the opportunity to engage with new skills, transitioning their understanding from the abstract to the concrete. This hands-on engagement is vital for reinforcing learning. Finally, the apply phase encourages students to transfer their new skills across a variety of contexts, fostering the commitment of knowledge to long-term memory. Collectively, these principles underpin our commitment to delivering an exceptional educational experience. This process enables the delivery of a cyclical curriculum where knowledge is consistently built not just within a topic but across topic domains.
