OurTrustwasformedin2015whenPelhamPrimarySchoolcametogetherwithFairfordAcademyBarnehurst,previouslyNormandyPrimary School,tocreatewhatisnowIlluminateMindsTrust.

My career in secondary education spanned 37 years at schoo Kent, Croydon Bromley and Bexley -specialising in Drama, crea arts and English -before taking up the Headship of Westw College,amixedsecondaryschoolinBexley,from2003-2008.

SRP - SPECIALIST RESOURCE PROVISION

PelhamSchoolisveryproudtohavetheonlyHearingImpaired SpecialistResourceProvisioninBexley,inadditiontothisour modernforeignlanguageacrosstheschoolisBritishSign Language.StudentswithintheSRPhavePelhamschoolnamedin sectionIontheirEducationHealthCarePlanandareintegratedin themainstreamschoolwhilstbeingsupportedthroughourSRP andhighlytrainedstaff.Academicneedsaresupportedfully withinmainstreamlessonsandallofourpupilshavefullaccessto allareasofthecurriculumwhilsttheyaresupportedtodevelop theirindependence,self-confidenceanddeafidentity.

InterventionsareidentifiedthroughsectionFandthereview meetingsforpupils’EHCPs.ThesearedeliveredthroughourSEN team,SENCOandTeacherOftheDeafandweprovide individualisedandsmallgroupsupportthroughpreteaching alongsidetargetedspeechandlanguagetherapy.BSLis embeddedthroughoutourschoolwithallpupilslearnthis languageandahighproportionofstaffhavelevel1,2or3 qualificationsinthissubject.Teachingandsupportstaffallhave deafawarenesstrainingandguidanceonhowtoteachand meettheneedsofdeafyoungpeople.

WeworkcloselywithoutsideagenciessuchasBexleySEN andCSC,DeafCAMHS,EducationalPsychologists,NDCS, SpeechandLanguageTherapy,TheSpecialistTeacher Service,audiologydepartmentsandcochlearimplant teams.Allstaffhaveongoingcontinuedprofessional developmentensuringthatknowledgeisup-to-dateand thatpupilsreceivethehighestqualityprovision.

AtPelhamPrimaryweaimtoprovidelearnerswithan educational experience that provides them with the skills, knowledge and character to understand and contributetotheworldtheylivein.Whereverpossible we look for meaningful opportunities across the curriculum for the children to make connections with their learning whilst not compromising on the knowledgetheyneedtobuildupon.

Wehavedesignedourownbespokecurriculum,withthe localcommunityandthechildrenweserveattheheart ofit.Childrenlearnabouttheirlocalareafirst,before wideningouttoLondon,otherareasoftheUKandfinally thewiderworld.Ourcurriculumaimstobeaspirational sothatwhenchildrenleavehere,theyareinspiredto achievebeyondPelhamPrimary.

Ourbespoketopicbasedcurriculumisstructuredwithclearprogression,sothatallstakeholdersareawareofthechildren’slearningjourneyfromEYFS toYear6andbeyond.Opportunitiesarebuiltinforchildrentomakeconnectionsbetweensubjectsandcorethemesthroughouttheirtimeatour school.However,childrenaretaughteachsubjectexplicitlysotheyleaveourschoolswithstrongsubjectknowledgereadyforthenextstageontheir learningjourney.

Webelievethateverychildcanbecomefluentreadersandwriters, regardlessofbackground.ThisiswhyweteachreadingthroughLittle WandleLettersandSoundsRevised,whichisasystematicand syntheticphonicsprogramme.Westartteachingphonicsin Nursery/ReceptionandfollowtheLittleWandleLettersandSounds

Revisedprogression,whichensureschildrenbuildontheirgrowing knowledgeofthealphabeticcode,masteringphonicstoreadand spellastheymovethroughschool.

GIFTEDANDTALENTED

We are alert to the identification of pupils who are exceptionally able or highly motivated. We aim to meet their needs in a challenging and stimulating way. Often through adaptations within lessons, clubs, small group work, and through our questioning. We will discuss with parents the best way to extend their childrenandwherenecessary,pupilswillbeofferedindividualisedprogrammes. RELIGIOUSEDUCATION

RELATIONSHIPSANDSEXEDUCATION

All pupils have weekly Religious Education lessons.Theschoolrecognisesthediversityof ourcohortandvaluesthedifferentreligionsand beliefsofourfamiliesandourwidercommunity. Schools in the Trust follow the “Discovery RE” curriculum. Religious festivals are celebrated duringourweeklyassembliesaswellasbeing embeddedintoaspectsofourwidercurriculum offer.

RelationshipsandSexEducationistaughtalongsideourPSHEprogrammein accordancewiththeguidelinesissuedbytheDepartmentforEducationandis alsoembeddedinourScienceCurriculum.Thecontentoftherelationshipand sexeducationprogrammeischosensoastobeappropriatetotheageand stageofdevelopmentofthechildren.

ParentsaregiventheopportunitytoviewallmaterialsrelatingtoRelationships andSexEducationbeforetheyareusedinschoolandarewelcometocontact theschooltoaccessthis.

CAREEERS

Ourjobistoequipourchildrenwiththeskills,knowledgeandattributesneededto transition firstly to secondary school and then onto the world of employment. Alongsideacademicachievement,ourschoolsfocusonpreparingchildrentomake informedchoicesaboutwhattheylikedoing,wheretheirtalentslieandwhatpath theywouldliketofollowinthefuture.

Welinklearningtocareersandactivelyseekstakeholderstocomeintoschooland talk about their jobs and careers, holding an annual Careers Fayre to widen our pupils'horizonsaspartofouroverallambitiontoincreasepupils'personalagency.

Aswellastripsandvisitor,weprovideanexcellentrangeofextra-curricularactivities.Thisranges fromaBritishSignLanguage(BSL)clubtoouroversubscribedScienceclub.Allchildrentakepartin awakeupactivityinclasseachmorningwhichgetsthemreadyfortheday.

Tosupporttheculturalcapitalofourchildren,wehaveintroducedourPupilJournals.Thejournals havebeencarefullydesignedwithkeyexperiencesforeachyeargroupthatwewillexposethe childrentobythetimetheyhaveleftPelhamPrimarySchool.Theexperiencesrangefromrolling downahillorperforminginfrontofanaudience.Theyareinterweavedthroughourcurriculum andaresharedweeklyinourCircleTimes.

Every ½ day absence from school, by law, has to be classified as either authorised or unauthorised. This is why information about the cause of absenceisalwaysaskedfor.

Authorised absences are mornings or afternoons away from school for a goodreasonsuchasillness,medicalappointmentsandemergencies.

AnabsenceisclassifiedasUnauthorised,ifthereasonwasnotrecognisedas acceptable. The Department for Education (DfE) and Local Education Authoritiesprovideinformationforschoolsaswhatisacceptableandwhatis not.

ADVERSEWEATHERCONDITIONS

If we experience adverse weather conditions parents, pupils and staff will be able to access updates through our school website, parent mail and social mediaallwhichareregularlyupdated.Everyoneisadvisedtomonitorthesefor regularupdates.

There are two options open to parents for their child’s lunch, school meals or packedlunch.

SchoolMeals-Childrenwillbegivenachoiceofmenuforschoolmeals.

Free School Meals - All pupils from Reception to Year 6 are currently entitled to free school meals. However, Free school meal applications can be made for children whose parents receive Income Support. If you are eligible for Free School Meals support, the school receives additional money to support your child. Pleasecontacttheschoolofficeforanapplicationform.

PackedLunch - A packed lunch may be brought to school. This should be in a rigid container clearly labelled with the pupil’s name and class. Water or soft cordial/squashtypedrinksmaybebroughtinaplasticflask,screw-topplastic bottle or cardboard carton with straw may be drunk at lunch. No fizzy drinks or sweets please – we are a ‘Healthy School’. We must request that no foods/snackscontainingnutsornutproductsareprovidedinyourchild’slunch inordertoavoidendangeringthehealthofpupilssufferingfromnutallergies. We ask you to provide fruit for your child to eat during the mid-morning break. Crisps, sweets, chocolate or biscuits are not acceptable. Nursery, Reception andKeyStage1pupilsreceivefreefruit.
