Flights and Travel Istanbul’s tourism season typically runs through the summer and so it is strongly recommended that you book your ticket as soon as possible in order to ensure you get the best flight and price available. Here is what you need to know to book your ticket and have a convenient, pleasurable trip.

Departure City As a larger international hub, Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) offers more frequent flights at less expensive rates.

Arrival City Istanbul has two airports, one of which has more international flights at better prices. Istanbul Ataturk Airport (TAV) is your best choice for arrival airports in Istanbul.

Visa Securing a visa to enter Turkey is very easy. Make sure to have your passport and $20 USD on hand. Upon disembarking, you will be able to obtain a three month-multiple entry visa at the border gates at the Istanbul Ataturk Airport.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION General Information Istanbul, the seventh largest city in the world, is a vibrant, historic, and cosmopolitan metropolis. Located in the Marmara region, the city has densely populated rolling hills butting up against the Bosporus. The city’s climate in early June is mild, with temperatures averaging 79° during the day and getting as low as 60° at night. There is little need to worry about language barriers while in the city as much of the population speaks English. You will find the Turkish people to be kind, hospitable, and willing to help a tourist in need of directions. It is, however, recommended that you prepare yourself for your stay in a foreign country by being familiar with the customs and subtle differences between Turkish and American cultures. “Turkey - Culture Smart!: The Essential Guide to Customs and Culture” is a short yet thorough option to quickly learn about Turkish culture and customs. Below is additional information you may find useful for your stay:

Time Zone Istanbul’s clocks are seven hours ahead of Michigan’s. For example, when it is noon in Michigan, it is seven o’clock pm in Istanbul.

Currency Turkish currency is known as the Lira and is composed of both bills and coins. The exchange rate between the U.S. Dollar and the Turkish Lira has averaged approximately 2/1, with $10 USD averaging to $16 Lira. This conversion cannot be guaranteed, so you are encouraged to stay current on rates so that you can best budget your trip. Currency exchange can be done throughout Istanbul and banks typically offer the best rates. Hotels and the airport offer exchanges, but at higher rates than banks. For those who would rather use credit cards, most restaurants and shops accept Visa and MasterCard. Discover and American Express are not commonly accepted. Taxis only take cash.

Electricity Turkey operates on 220 volts, 50 Hz, with round-prong European-style plugs that fit into recessed wall sockets. It is advisable to bring adapters for times when you need to charge your computer or phone but are away from your hotel room.
