As you move into your room... Keyword: fallorientation What is SCVNGR? SCVNGR is a game. Playing is simple: Do challenges. Earn prizes! What do I need to do to play? If you have a smartphone: 1. Download the SCVNGR app on your smartphone. 2. Go to the “treks” button and find “Fall Orientation 2012” If you have a regular cell phone with text messaging: 1. Text “fallorientation” to SCVNGR [728647]. 2. A text will be sent back to you with your location and challenge 3. Submitting photos via SMS (text message) is easy. Simply send your photos to pics@scvngr.com. Please include your cell number in the message. (We promise not to share it, it's just how we know to give you credit for your photos if you're playing via SMS.)

...here are some guidelines that will help you keep your room and residence hall safe and free of fire hazards: 

 

Make sure any lamps you bring have bulbs of proper wattage. Most lamps take a lower wattage than you think! Even better, use CFLs- they use lower wattage and are better for the environment. Don’t ever hang anything on the ceiling or the sprinkler systems in your room or hallway- not even for a minute! Be sure to keep any clutter including shoes, garbage, and other items out of the hallways and away from your room door. Nothing may be stored in hallways. Make sure you take out your trash and recycling regularly. Any accumulation of trash can get in the way of exiting your room in the case of an emergency, and can be unnecessary fuel in the case of a fire. Besides, it’s just gross! Don’t hang any cables or cords on the ceiling or above doorways. In the event of a fire, these can get tangled in a firefighter’s breathing apparatus, which is really dangerous for them. Also, don’t bring any stringed lights or rope lights! If you brought any extension cords, make sure to only use one at a time, plugged directly from the outlet to your appliance. These should only be used temporarily! Make sure electrical cords are not running under chairs or across the floor. If you are walking or rolling over a cord, it will wear out over time and can cause a fire.

A challenge? What’s that? A challenge is a quick, fun thing to do at a place. Things like snapping a picture or answering a question.

What will this be like? You’ll be asked to complete one challenge at 10 locations. The first 16 people to complete it correctly will get a prize!

And here is a list of things you just can’t ever bring into your room:

6

        

Candles (even if you don’t plan on burning them!) Incense Halogen lamps Toasters Any appliance with an exposed heating element Grills Gas/flammable liquids Space heaters Air conditioners
