THE GRAND CHIEF, ASSEMBLY OF MANITOBA CHIEFS On behalf of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs representing 61 First Nation communities across Manitoba, I want to congratulate Pride Winnipeg on another successful year of promoting awareness and knowledge of the LGBTTQ* community.

Before the arrival of European explorers and the beginning colonialism across Turtle Island, the gender identity of women/man and man/women held a special position in the community dynamic. They were viewed as visionaries and healers for their ability to have both characteristics of women and men. Two-spirited people were highly respected and honoured for their gift of having two spirits guiding their journey. Unfortunately, this understanding of inclusion of two-spirited people in the community and of the First Nation culture has been lost.

Today, through Pride Winnipeg, we are beginning to revitalize the important role of two-spirited people in our community and especially in society. The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs supports and honours such initiatives that empowers people to fully see their abilities to succeed in life.

THE PREMIER OF MANITOBA On behalf of the Province and people of Manitoba, welcome to the largest celebration of LGBTTQ* culture on the prairies—the 2015 Pride Winnipeg Festival.

Pride Winnipeg has been celebrated annually since 1987, when 250 individuals marched against the homophobic culture of the day, advocating freedom and love. This movement swept the nation, transforming society and inspiring a new era of acceptance. Today, Pride Winnipeg welcomes over 35,000 people to a 10-day celebration of equality filled with music, activism, and joy.

As Pride has evolved, so have the rights of Manitoba’s LGBTTQ* community. Our government is passionately committed to equality, and we have put pride into action by extending marriage and adoption rights to same-sex couples, strengthening anti-discrimination laws, and fostering safe, supportive schools. In the last year we passed another momentous bill, making it easier and more accessible for transgender Manitobans to change their sex designation on provincial documents. We are deeply proud of this progress and proud to stand with the LGBTTQ* community in their struggle for equality. By working together, we can continue building a stronger, more inclusive province.

I would like to thank the Pride Winnipeg board, the volunteers, and the LGBTTQ* community for bringing this festival to life year after year. This Pride, let us join together in all our diversity to celebrate how far we have come. I invite you all to raise your rainbow flag and celebrate Pride’s “Evolution.” Happy Pride!

EVOLUTION of Pride

The Pride Winnipeg Festival has evolved and grown to a point that it requires year-round operation and planning. Even after the Festival, The Organization is doing take-down, settling accounts, and updating branding pieces for the following year before breaking for a couple weeks of “vacation.” Not long after, The Board is back at work in the summer planning for the following year’s Pride Festival. One major component of this planning is the next Pride theme...

The Pride theme can be one of the most difficult and daunting projects for The Board. We are tasked with creating a theme that will resonate within our whole diverse community but as any marketing professional will tell you “If you try to market to everyone, you will reach no one,” in other words if the theme isn’t relatable then it won’t have meaning for anyone. It would also be inappropriate to focus the Festival around one sole issue – who are we to say which issue should take spotlight and precedence over another? Therefore we aim to create a theme to which multiple issues can receive focus and where we can highlight certain subjects.

This year’s theme ‘Evolution’ examines the evolution of pride and human rights. It aims to promote education and awareness around LGBTTQ* history and major milestones. Wrapped up in the history and milestones are not only the reasons why Pride movements were formed but also why we continue with Pride movements today.

For some, the concept of LGBTTQ* may be new or having only existed within the last 50 years but in fact history points to LGBTTQ* people having been around since the dawn of mankind. Mesolithic rock art in Sicily dated between 9660 to 5000 BCE depicts phallic male figures in pairs interpreted to be depictions of male homosexual intercourse.1 Throughout the recorded history of humans, LGBTTQ* people are documented – from Egyptian Pharaohs with homosexual love affairs,2 Roman emperors seeking transition surgery,3 to an ancient Greek female poet and her love for women being the inspiration for the word ‘lesbian,’4 and

pre-colonial First Nation communities celebrating two-spirit people as visionaries.

Unfortunately since the 4th century, LGBTTQ* people became required to hide in the proverbial closet for fear of exile, torture, and death due to widespread misinformation.

We often hear in the media coverage of Pride, comments such as “you have all your rights, why do you still need Pride?” To this we answer ‘there is still lot’s to do and much to celebrate.’ Pride is more than just a rally or protest. It is a celebration of identities, culture and love all wrapped up in the reflection of the evolution of LGBTTQ* human rights.

Pride movements began after the New York Stonewall Inn riots of 1969. In Canada, the Canadian government decriminalized homosexual acts for consenting adults over 21, under then-Justice Minister Pierre Trudeau whom uttered his famous “the state has no place in the bedrooms of the nation”

statement. While National Gay Conferences took place during the 70’s (Winnipeg hosted in 1974), it wasn’t until Operation Soap in 1981, when over three hundred men were arrested as part of a Toronto police raid on four bathhouses, that Pride movements gained momentum in Canada. Operation Soap is still one of the largest mass arrests in Canadian history and sparked an unprecedented community mobilization in support of LGBTTQ* people.

Pride Winnipeg traces its roots back to August 2, 1987 when approximately 250 people gathered at the Manitoba Legislature and awaited the provincial government’s vote on passing the Manitoba Human Rights Code – one of the first to protect sexual orientation. It was passed and so a march of celebration took place in downtown Winnipeg, unofficially becoming Winnipeg’s first Pride Day.

That being said there is still much to do. It was only two years ago on May 22nd, that Health Canada lifted the lifetime blood donation ban on men who have had sex with men, and replaced it with a five year deferral period.

Within our own community prejudices exist such as ‘thug’ pornography, hookup profiles with statuses indicating ‘no Asians,’ and notions that interracial couples are together based on stereotypes of the persons’ skin tone – indicating that racial discrimination and racism still exist and as a community we must stop it. Most recently, Bill C-279 – a bill to protect gender identity and gender expression – was amended in the Senate, despite being passed in the House of Commons. The amendments have forced the bill back onto the Order Paper where it will likely die due to the forthcoming fall election; another devastating setback to the LGBTTQ* community and for gender rights everywhere.

Since that day our organization has witnessed and advocated for an evolution of human rights. In 1990, Winnipeg hosted the 3rd Annual Intertribal Native American/First Nations Gay and Lesbian Conference. At this conference the modern umbrella term ‘two-spirit’ was chosen to express Native/First Nations’ gender-variant individuals. While most indigenous communities have specific terms in their own languages for gendervariant members, ‘two-spirit’ was chosen to modernly represent these terms and replace otherwise offensive terminology. This year marks the 25th anniversary of this historic decision.

The evolution of human rights is a reflection of the advancements made by society. Human rights and freedoms are vital to the LGBTTQ* community as they permit equal recognition and treatment, which enables continued progress. The Evolution theme calls for us to reflect on our history and focus on the evolution of human rights through education and awareness. Education and awareness are the links from ignorance to knowledge, denial to acceptance, and hate to love.

July 20th, 2015 is another milestone as it marks 10 years of equal marriage in Canada, and it was only three years ago that the Manitoba government added protection from discrimination on the grounds of gender identity to The Manitoba Human Rights Code. This year is also the inaugural year of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights – the only

HEADLINERS Drew G of Dirty Pop

There are few sounds on the DJ circuit today as fresh and innovative as those of DJ Drew G. Based in San Diego, but constantly on the road, this prolific DJ and music producer continues to push dance floors to the limit in clubs both at home and around the world. To describe Drew G’s sound is near impossible because he crosses so many genres in both his production work and live DJ sets. His trademark “Dirty Pop” signature sound is a blend of house, pop, rock, hip-hop, EDM and more. Within the world of Dirty Pop, you’re as likely to hear Rihanna and Pink, as Shania Twain and Queen. Sonic boundaries mean nothing to him – he breaks them week in and week out.

To create the sound, Drew fuses many songs together to create what sounds like brand new remixes on the fly, often containing drops from original un-remixed tracks. The brand refers nowadays not only to his sound, but also to the bad boy image associated with the Number 1 traveling dance Party in the U.S., as well as the Dirty Pop apparel line.

A Drew G live set is infused with relentless energy. Nobody can work mash-ups like him.

He flows in and out of tracks flawlessly and fans never know what to expect next. Hard kicks and dark electro drops are common trademarks of a Dirty Pop set.

Cazwell It has gotten so that a teenager cannot simply go to a concert without holding his or her iPhone in front of their face and impersonating a duck. America has gone crazy for the selfie, with teens, celebrities, and even the Oxford English Dictionary embracing the cellphone self-portrait. The motive is almost always the same: to let the world know where one is, what they’re doing, and how good they look. It’s the newest form of narcissism, and Cazwell’s latest hip hop dance track, ‘No Selfie Control’, is capitalizing on the craze with hilariously catchy lyrics set against a minimalist retro-funk track and smooth playa beat. Says the rapper, “’No Selfie Control’ is a heartfelt track that was written for everyone on Instagram that is in love...with themselves.” ‘No Selfie Control’ is out now.

Cazwell, a Massachusetts native; himself, a product of the internet age. He became a Youtube sensation after a million people in a single week viewed his ‘Ice Cream Truck’ music video. He has since earned hipster credibility with a steady flow of danceable hip hop tracks − including ‘Rice & Beans’ and ‘I Seen Beyoncé At Burger King’—that impressively showcase his hypomanic take on pop culture. Cazwell has been described as “what would have happened if Eminem had grown up on Madonna’s front lawn.”

EVOLVING PAST WHAT’S BETWEEN OUR LEGS Shandi Strong

Grand Marshal

Shandi is one of the fiercest advocates in the LGBTTQ* community. Some have called her a trans pioneer and even ‘the Laverne Cox of Winnipeg,’ but she’s quick to point out that she’s not the first trans person in Winnipeg and none of her success would’ve been possible without the support of the LBGTTQ* community. A humble person, Shandi shares her story in the hopes that it will empower those in need and prevent misinformation about trans and gender fluid individuals.

Shandi’s story begins the way most trans stories do, a realization at a very young age that their body and attitudes don’t match their gender identity. Most children are taught ‘gender rules’ from family, rules which often indicate stereotypes such as ‘boys like the color blue, enjoy sports and vehicles,’ whereas ‘girls like the color pink, enjoy makeup and dolls.’ She preferred to have tea parties and play the ‘damsel in distress’ as a child – activities commonly associated with femininity during that time period.

Now for those whom are not familiar with the differences and significance of gender versus sex we’ll take a moment to explain.

Sex is the biological makeup of an individual’s physical body whereas gender is the identity and expression of the person.

If you refer to the diagram on the bottom right, you can see that identity, expression, sex and orientation are all different but all compose the overall identity of a person.

Over the years Shandi struggled with her gender identity and expression. In her teen years her parents had caught her dressed in women’s clothing and sent her to a psychiatrist. As she grew older she buried her urges by getting married, having kids, and focusing on her job but the need to be herself never left. After 10 years and two

children her first marriage dissolved.

In her second marriage she was fortunate to have found someone that outwardly supported her despite her inner turmoil.

Through a local support group called “Masquerade”, she began to connect with people from the LGBTTQ* community and found support, love and acceptance.

During these years she started to identify herself for whom she truly was to close friends and family. She finally worked up the courage to identify herself at work and announce that she would begin to transition.

Shandi wrote up a letter to her colleagues at work explaining her identity and that she would begin to transition. She received support from her colleagues but her employer would not support her and she was fired the following day. Shortly after that, her second marriage ended and Shandi found herself sinking into a dark abyss.

Devastated and betrayed she found herself on the kitchen floor deciding which knife to use to commit suicide with. Fortunately her daughter arrived at the house unexpectedly and prevented a tragedy from occurring.

Counselling through the Rainbow Resource Centre and the continued support of the LGBTTQ* community kept her going. The people at Gio’s kept her busy and she found a footing amongst drag queens who

showed her the humour within gender and taught her snappy comebacks.

Empowered by volunteering in the community for causes such as Gio’s Cares, the Rainbow Resource Centre and the Transgender Day of Remembrance, Shandi continues to advocate for trans awareness.

She has sat on panels to discuss trans topics, participated in trans events and regularly appears in the media, most recently to vocalize the dismay with the amendments added to Bill C-279 by Senator Don Plett.

Shandi is against the amendments as they will victimize those whom were to be protected by the bill. The third amendment to the bill indicates that people must use gendered-facilities based upon the sex they were assigned at birth. This essentially means that pre-operative trans people, who identify, and express, as their preferred gender would be forced to use a washroom based solely on their genitalia. Despite

having used a woman’s washroom with no problems for nearly 20 years, Shandi is infuriated at the risks this amendment would pose on others in the community.

Shandi is optimistic though and wants everyone to remain hopeful. People are becoming more educated about trans people and attitudes are evolving. She encourages the LGBTTQ* community to continue spreading awareness and educating about the facts in order to destroy the fabricated fear.

Shandi is a keynote speaker at the 2015 OUTShine Conference, is the Advocacy Coordinator for Pride Winnipeg, is writing her autobiography titled ‘Growing a Pair,’ and is looking to provide consultation to employers regarding trans awareness in the workplace.

Honorary Youth Marshal

This sprite young ally to the community made headlines this year when she organized a Pink T-shirt Day kickoff rally to advocate for anti-bullying awareness. In addition, she’s heavily involved with other human rights and mental health awareness initiatives such as ‘No Means No’ awareness, Take Back the Night, and the Centre for Addictions and Mental Health’s National Youth Advisory Committee (NYAC).

Maree’s parents immigrated from the Philippines to Canada in search of a better life. Her parents became strong supporters of human rights and were involved in Mayday rallies in support of worker’s rights. Growing up, Maree attended these rallies and became passionate about human rights issues. In junior high Maree faced bullying from her peers, however this did motivate her to want to create positive change.

Today, Maree is focused on supporting youth through education. She leads a group of individuals who perform workshops in schools in order to educate youth about stopping bullying, LGBTTQ* issues such as language and gender stereotypes, and promoting acceptance and equality. Maree also encourages everyone facing negativity to reach out to family, peers, and community centres. Maree’s message to everyone is to ‘Stay awesome!’

EVOLVING RIGHTS Manitoba Association for Rights & Liberties

Honorary Community Group Marshal The Manitoba Association for Rights & Liberties (MARL) exists to promote, support, and celebrate human rights and civil liberties. This non-profit organization has been defending, extending and creating awareness for the rights and liberties of citizens in Manitoba for over 37 years. MARL focuses its initiatives on three key areas: Monitoring and Response, Youth Education, and Community Outreach.

For Monitoring and Response, MARL reviews and responds to legislation, responds to public inquiries and performs a media watch on human rights issues. For Youth Education, MARL has created teacher’s tool kits, connected high school students with human rights issues, created social justice clubs and developed an under 18 handbook to educate youth about their rights and liberties. For Community Outreach, MARL is one of the organizations responsible for the Human Rights Commitment Awards of Manitoba, they also raise awareness for March 21st the day for the elimination of racial discrimination.

MARL was also heavily involved in lobbying the provincial government for the passage of Bill 18, The Public Schools Amendment Act (Safe and Inclusive Schools) also known as the anti-bullying bill. This year, MARL will be participating and doing a presentation at OUTShine, the annual national Gay-Straight Alliance summit. Another of MARL’s upcoming community outreach initiatives is Canadian Multiculturalism Day (June 27). MARL plans to showcase and promote Manitoba’s rich cultural diversity with a public celebration being planned. Check out their website for more details (marl.mb.ca).

AS PRIDE FESTIVITIES IN WINNIPEG CONTINUE TO GROW, SO DO OUR COSTS. In partnership with Half Pints Brewing, each sale of Queer Beer directly benefits Pride Winnipeg. Watch for it at Manitoba Liquor Marts and ask for it at the city’s queer bars, Club 200 and Fame Nightclub. You’ll be funneling money back into our community by choosing Queer Beer!
