Strength Through Solidarity
2023-2024 Gratitude & Action Report
2023-2024 Gratitude & Action Report
To say this year has been a lot is an extraordinary understatement. Even before the devastating news of the presidential election outcome, our community has been facing continuous waves of backlash against the progress we’ve made as a movement. From historic amounts of anti-trans legislation, to efforts to erase us from public life, and a troubling decline in funding for LGBTQ+ communities—2024 has been marked with many stark reminders that our fight is far from over.
Our work just got exponentially harder – and exponentially more necessary. But Pride Foundation was built from and for moments exactly like this. Through our collective work over nearly four decades, we have carved out the protection, support, and connections we needed— and that’s what we will continue to do in the months and years to come.
Revolution is not a moment—it is a practice. A practice of harnessing the power we’ve built to create change and channel it back into our community. Our solidarity, our connection to one another, and our collective action give us the stamina to not only withstand, but continue to move forward.
We believe that the Northwest can be a place where all LGBTQ+ people experience joy, safety, and liberation. We believe that through our collective power, we will make it a reality.
Thank you for persevering alongside us through so much these past few years, and continuing to show up for our community each and every day. We hope you find this report to be an encouraging testament to our shared progress—a moment of hope through it all. But it is also a reminder of what lies ahead, and we hope you feel that it is also a call to action.
Let’s continue the fight for a world where our people can thrive, together.
With gratitude & solidarity, Katie
Carter, CEO
Carol Cheney & Jason Bergevin Board Co-Presidents
From the ways educational policies impact our students to the continued alarming rise in anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, from the shrinking pool of resources, to the realities of navigating hostile socio-political environments, these interconnected issues reflect the larger picture of what it means to live as an LGBTQ+ person in our region. Through a deeper understanding of our challenges, we hope you’ll be inspired to continue to stand with us in the fight for equity and justice.
Anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric, legislation, and policies — particularly those targeting trans+ and nonbinary students, have created an environment of fear, exclusion, and violence in many schools. From book bans that erase LGBTQ+ histories to discriminatory policies around bathroom access and participation in school sports, the barriers to a safe and affirming education are growing.
Attacks on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives, alongside the Supreme Court’s ruling to end Affirmative Action in college admissions, have disproportionately impacted BIPOC LGBTQ+ students. Additionally, financial burdens remain a significant challenge for students.
2024 has been another record-breaking year after record-breaking years of proposed and enacted antiLGBTQ+ legislation: 538 anti-LGBTQ+ bills were proposed in state legislatures across the country for the 2024 legislative session alone. Six of these bills were signed into law in Idaho, with bans on educational materials, rollbacks on anti-discrimination protections, and direct attacks on the well-being of LGBTQ+, especially BIPOC, trans+, and nonbinary folks.
State legislation is only one small window into the everyday experience of violence impacting trans+ and LGBTQ+ people more broadly in the Northwest. We know that counties, cities, and school boards have been and continue to be battlegrounds for critical LGBTQ+ justice and that this climate of backlash profoundly affects the lived reality of our community.
Funders for LGBTQ Issues published national data from 2022 that shows support for LGBTQ+ communities is actually going down — for every $100 awarded by U.S. foundations, only 25 cents supports LGBTQ+ communities (down from the already abysmally low 28 cents in 2021). It is alarming that philanthropic support is decreasing as our communities face one of the most coordinated set of ongoing attacks in a generation.
This decline in institutional support comes at a time when we’ve received more emergency funding requests than ever before—many for urgent needs like shelter, healthcare, and crisis support. Locally, many LGBTQ+led organizations across the Northwest have been forced to close or dramatically reduce services due to a lack of funding.
Across the Northwest, LGBTQ+ individuals are navigating a challenging landscape. The rise in anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric, compounded by restrictive legislation, has led many to feel unsafe in their own communities. Recent data suggests that a growing number of LGBTQ+ individuals—especially trans+ and nonbinary people—have considered relocating due to hostility in their current environment.
For those who stay, the cultural impact is profound: LGBTQ+ folks are increasingly facing social isolation, economic hardship, and a lack of access to critical services like healthcare and housing.
In 2021, 2022, and 2023, Pride Foundation awarded $917,000 each year in Community Grants to 105 organizations, ranging in awards from $5,000 to $35,000. This was our first time awarding multi-year grants, a practice we implemented because we know it is critical to ensuring the sustainability and growth of LGBTQ+ organizations. This was a record-high amount of grantmaking for us, and it means that we distributed more than $2.75 million across our region over three years just through this funding stream!
While our Community Grants program provides long-term, sustainable funding to our grantee partners to ensure that they have what they need, we know that there is a critical need to provide resources and space for the emergent and unexpected needs of our communities.
Since 2017, we have always had a responsive funding program that has evolved to meet the changing needs of our communities that we call our Community Care Fund. In 2022, we focused on supporting more QTBIPOC organizations in rural areas who have limited access to resources and support.
In 2023, we also prioritized helping organizations with immediate needs like loss of funding, operational disruption, and critical support for things like housing and mental health support.
In total, we awarded $551,000 from the Community Care Fund to 21 organizations, with 75% of this funding focused on QTBIPOC groups in rural communities and 25% going to organizations outside these priority areas.

In 2023, Pride Foundation launched our Washington LGBTQ+ Youth Initiative in partnership with the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation. This $1.6M initiative is focused on supporting the long-term sustainability of LGBTQ+ youth organizations in Washington state through grantmaking and programmatic offerings, as well as supporting the leadership of LGBTQ+ youth directly. Spanning across the entire state, we’re supporting youth organizations from Okanogan County to Yakima County, and beyond.
Our funding prioritizes organizations focusing on racial justice for QTBIPOC youth, gender justice for trans+ and nonbinary youth, and those working in rural areas or supporting youth impacted by housing insecurity, the criminal legal system, and foster care.
During its first year, the Washington Youth Initiative awarded two-year grants to 13 LGBTQ+ youth-serving organizations and in the second year we awarded grants to seven additional organizations. These organizations provide critical resources such as housing, food, mutual aid, health care access, arts and music programs, academic support, and political advocacy.
Beyond grantmaking, Pride Foundation is supporting these organizations through skillshare convenings, youth listening sessions, and additional critical support as needs emerge.

Our scholars continue to face significant challenges as they pursue higher education amidst growing national attacks on LGBTQ+ rights, particularly targeting trans+ and nonbinary people and the persistent impact of anti-Blackness. Rising living expenses and the soaring costs of higher education weigh disproportionately on our students, who often don’t have familial support to fall back on. These difficulties were further exacerbated by technical delays and system issues in the updated FAFSA application in 2024, making it even harder for students to access much-needed financial aid.
At Pride Foundation, we remain committed to evolving our scholarship practices to prioritize scholar needs and impact. This means simplifying our application process and prioritizing students who confront systemic oppression and barriers to education. As part of this effort, we piloted offering multi-year scholarships, providing ten students with $10,000 per year until they complete their degree. We hope to expand this program in the future, knowing that longer-term support helps ensure students have what they need to finish their education. In total, we awarded $805,000 in scholarships to 112 students in 2023.
1,048 applications received - the highest number in Pride Foundation history 70%
51% live in rural areas 79% are trans+ or gender diverse 62% are disabled/living with a disability 73% are people of color have experienced or are experiencing houselessness
Our scholars go into a wide array of fields, using their education and lived experience to better the world they live in, both for themselves and the communities they belong to. We are honored to support our community of scholars who continue to embody excellence and leadership in their own lives, families, home communities, fields of study and workplaces, and in our movements for justice.

“As I move forward in my social work career, I’m eager to find spaces where I can best serve the community, whether in early childhood, juvenile justice, or addiction counseling. With the support of Pride Foundation, invaluable mentorship, and my community, I’ve gained the resources and resilience to pursue my dream—a journey fueled by my passion, purpose, and commitment to our collective well-being.” — Alan Splitter
After earning an associate’s degree from Portland Community College this past Spring, Alan is pursuing a degree in social work at Portland State University, with plans to complete the advanced standing Master’s in Social Work program by spring 2027.
This fall, Alan started an internship with Multnomah County’s Early Childhood Mental Health Program, where they’re learning to provide classroom consultation that encourages teachers and administrators to take a strengths-based approach to curriculum and classroom setup.
“This internship has deepened my understanding of policy, while my focus on early childhood mental health supports teachers in adopting strengths-based, inclusive classroom practices. Together, we work to shift the focus from blame and punishment toward addressing the needs of children, aligning perfectly with my commitment to restorative justice and nonpunitive approaches,” Alan shares.
Additionally, Alan serves as co-chair on the Behavioral Health Resource Center advisory council, where their lived experiences with substance use disorder and homelessness inform their perspective and advocacy for policies that support the community’s most vulnerable members.
Raised within both the Jehovah’s Witness and Algonquin Cree communities, Kitchi’s upbringing nurtured a deep commitment to service, whether in volunteer work, community outreach, or supporting elders. Summers spent in Alberta enriched their understanding of cultural heritage and connection, sparking a desire to serve others and foster unity.
Now, Kitchi applies this dedication to mental health support work in Idaho by working to create a state-wide coalition addressing anti-LGBTQ2SIA+ legislation through education and encouraging the community while also serving on the board of Trans Affirm providing for their community’s unmet needs. Their life has been shaped by a balance between giving and self-care, as they work to sustain their mission of creating a brighter future for Indigenous youth by helping them cultivate healthy, fulfilling lives.
Kitchi is a student at the College of Southern Idaho and is pursuing a degree in social work with the goal of returning to Canada to work with Indigenous youth.
All LGBTQ+ people deserve to live openly as our whole selves, form safe and nourishing connections, and live free from discrimination and violence. Pride Foundation’s CARE department supports LGBTQ+ cultural workers and community organizing efforts to celebrate and sustain the historical and future sexual and gender diversity of the Northwest and beyond in our movements toward justice.
The ultimate goal of our CARE work is to create a Northwest region that is inhospitable to homophobia, transphobia, racism, misogyny, and all other forms of harm directed at LGBTQ+ communities.
Since 2016, the work that has evolved to become the Department of CARE has unapologetically centered BIPOC trans, nonbinary, intersex, and Two-Spirit ancestral knowledge and lives. During our 2023-2024 fiscal year, CARE’s work primarily centered around its TRANSform Culture Program while preparing for the launch of a new program called NOW (Northwest Organizing Workshop), focused on LGBTQ+ wellness and trans-regional coalitionbuilding, launching later this year.
This year, CARE has invested more than $250,000 in our community, including $150,000 in stipends for our TRANSform Culture Program fellows and $90,000 in
Trans Advocacy grants for groups in Alaska, Idaho, and Montana. CARE has also provided additional support to the community through interview stipends, gas assistance, and food resources.
During our 2023-2024 fiscal year, we directly supported community advocacy efforts by supporting nine organizations through our Trans Advocacy Grant Cohort and submitting testimony in Idaho, while also calling on our stakeholders to submit testimony across the region. We provided meal and transportation support directly to community members engaged in advocacy efforts, and took part in planning for regional actions, particularly in Idaho. Additionally, we supported defendants in lawsuits in Montana and focused on transforming policies within municipal systems and nonprofit organizations.
This past year, we promoted narratives celebrating and uplifting LGBTQ+ people in the Northwest — from pride t-shirts in Walla Walla to yard signs for trans+ Montanans, to the gathering of interviews by our TRANSform Culture fellows directly with other BIPOC, trans+, and nonbinary people across the Northwest. CARE also hosted its first cross-regional conversation about LGBTQ+ needs and opportunities in the Northwest at Funding Forward, an annual conference hosted by Funders for LGBTQ Issues. During that conference, we hosted a conversation with Campaign for Southern Equality about overlapping struggles in our respective regions and possibilities for gender justice and LGBTQ+ joy from a philanthropic lens.
“What if WE, are the story.” - Brandon Connolly, TRANSform Culture Fellow 2023-2024 Cycle
Critical community-based participatory research is where our CARE department originated and continues to be a central activity. What began as messaging research to defeat anti-trans bathroom bills in Washington state has evolved into the TRANSform Culture Fellowship, TRANSform Culture Village Council, and ongoing regional narrative work in the service of gender and racial justice. Additionally, we are creating a supportive environment for LGBTQ+ research in the Northwest, reimagining how studies are conducted and used so that they can actively support social justice and drive meaningful change.

As attacks on LGBTQ+ communities continue to intensify across the country and in our region specifically, the need for solidarity and collective action has never been greater. At Pride Foundation, we remain steadfast in our mission to support, uplift, and fuel movements for justice across the Northwest — and engage our supporters and partners to help us do this.
As the only LGBTQ+ community foundation in our region, we mobilize a vast network of supporters — many of whom have stood alongside us for decades. We’re continuously inspired by our community’s resilience and readiness to show up for one another: 395 new donors joined us this year, alongside long-time supporters, some of whom have been with us for over 30 years! In the past year alone, 1,255 donor households, foundations, and corporations contributed over $5.5 million to advance LGBTQ+ justice in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington.
Even as national funding for LGBTQ+ communities remains critically low—only 25 cents for every $100 awarded by U.S. foundations—we are proud to witness the power of our community coming together to create lasting change. Our work is made possible by you, our community of donors and supporters.

“Our joy is a revolutionary act.” — Katie Carter, Pride Foundation CEO
This year’s Season of Tend brought us together in powerful and creative ways with more than 400 attendees at events across all 5 states in our region, helping to raise $275,000 for our work across the Northwest. But Tend isn’t just a fundraiser—it’s a celebration and reflection of the values that have long sustained LGBTQ+ communities.
Through uninhibited creativity, bold self-expression, and the shared joy that pulsed through these gatherings, we paid homage

to the same life forces that have fueled LGBTQ+ movements for generations. At each of the five events across Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington, we celebrated local artists, collaborated on creating communal art, and relished the chance to connect and celebrate together.
With every creative spark, laugh, and connection made, we reclaim spaces that inspire us to keep going, creating, and supporting one another with renewed purpose.
“We must continue to invest in our community. The Pacific Northwest is my home, and I want to ensure it’s a welcoming place for all.” — Rocky Horan
For Rocky Horan, giving to Pride Foundation is something that comes easily.
Born and raised in Western Washington, this Microsoft health and life sciences director left home at 16, navigating the loss of a parent and periods of housing instability along the way. It was a high school guidance counselor who recommended he apply for a Pride Foundation scholarship. He was awarded scholarships in 2005 and 2006, and that investment in his education deeply impacted his life.
“Pride Foundation believed in me and the work that I was doing, plus understood my hardship,” said Rocky, who launched the first Genders & Sexualities Alliances (GSA) club in Washington’s Auburn School District, while also participating in several community groups in the Seattle area helping empower LGBTQ+ students. “It made me realize for the first time that I was not alone in my fight for equality and a better education. If it wasn’t for Pride Foundation’s generosity, I never would have been able to attend Seattle University’s School of Nursing, and would not be the successful, middle-aged adult that I am today.”
Rocky has proudly made a donation to Pride Foundation every year since graduating from college, and also regularly volunteers to help review scholarship applications.
“To this day, I am appreciative of the work of Pride Foundation to ensure LGBTQ+ students from underrepresented communities have a chance to attend school,” Rocky said. “We are helping promote education and supporting a vulnerable population that is too often overlooked. Knowing that I am investing in those who are trying to better themselves and nurturing future leaders helps me to know that we will have a brighter future. We must continue to invest in our community. The Pacific Northwest is my home, and I want to ensure it’s a welcoming place for all.”
“Some of the bravest people I’ve ever met are trans and gender-diverse youth. Having the tenacity to allow yourself to embrace your authenticity, to take the risk of sharing your truth with the people whose love you need and want the most (your parents), is an act of pure courage.” — Dr. Davia
Dr. Davia Loren is a dedicated physician and passionate advocate for trans+ and nonbinary youth who became a donor to Pride Foundation in 2022. She has committed herself to fostering a world where trans+ and nonbinary individuals are celebrated and provided with comprehensive healthcare, and was inspired by Pride Foundation’s shared commitment to building this world. Dr. Loren focuses her philanthropy on uplifting LGBTQ+ communities, especially those with multiple and intersectional marginalized identities, and has doubled down right now because she knows how urgent this moment is.
Dr. Loren became a donor because she sees Pride Foundation as being essential to advancing civil rights for LGBTQ+ people. She shares our vision for a world where everyone lives with dignity and respect, appreciating the rich diversity of human experiences: “This is the call, and Pride Foundation is where my hopes can be channeled into reality.”
Deeply inspired by the courage it takes for trans+ and nonbinary youth to embrace their authentic selves, Dr. Loren believes that every individual deserves love, expert healthcare, and equality, and knows from firsthand experience the courage trans+ and nonbinary youth have to embrace their authentic selves. Their
courage inspires her to fight alongside Pride Foundation to stop the demonization and misrepresentation of our communities and to ensure we all have access to life-saving healthcare.
Dr. Loren knows from her work as a doctor, trainer, and advocate that advances in trans healthcare ultimately enhance the healthcare system for everyone. She is helping build a future where compassion and respect guide our communities by fostering understanding and celebrating the contributions of trans+ and nonbinary people, she advocates for. Through her work and support for Pride Foundation, Dr. Loren is dedicated to transforming hope into tangible change.
Over the past year, Pride Foundation’s staff and board crafted a bold vision for the future and a five-year strategic framework to guide us toward that vision. Reflecting on the future we envision, we asked ourselves: What will be different for LGBTQ+ communities in the Northwest if we fulfill our role well?
We know that the experiences and realities faced by LGBTQ+ people are not monolithic across the identities we hold and the geographies we exist within. Because of this, we intentionally and unapologetically center those most impacted by oppression and injustice in everything we do, particularly Black, Indigenous, and People of Color and Trans+ people.
We also know that our movements for justice are inextricably interconnected and that the fight for LGBTQ+ justice and liberation must always be in deep connection to other movements for justice, including racial, gender, disability, and economic justice. We believe in a future where our communities have what we need to thrive and through our collective power we will create it — this is solidarity in action.
This is our response to our current reality, our guiding light in the march toward collective liberation and a luminous future for all.
The Northwest region is a joyful, safe, liberated, and well-resourced place to call and be home for LGBTQ+ people, particularly for those most impacted by oppression and injustice.
LGBTQ+ organizations across the Northwest, in both urban and rural communities, are flourishing.
Pride Foundation is thriving as an organization and well-positioned to support our communities in the Northwest in deep and multifaceted ways.
Resources are flowing to LGBTQ+ communities at increased levels and in more regenerative ways.
LGBTQ+ communities know that Pride Foundation is a committed and reliable coconspirator and partner in racial justice and regional movement building.
LGBTQ+ people in the Northwest are supported in their labor, leadership, and livelihoods.
At Pride Foundation, we bring together resources from individuals across the Northwest and beyond, knowing that our collective efforts create the greatest impact. Together, we are stronger in addressing the challenges LGBTQ+ communities face throughout the region.
We list our supporters by when they made their first gift to honor the shared history, dedication, and determination that have driven our journey toward ensuring LGBTQ+ people can live with joy, safety, and thriving futures. Whether you’re new to Pride Foundation or have been by our side for decades, we are deeply grateful for your support.
