Why We Need Voices of Courage, In 2018 and Beyond: A conversation between Physicians for Reproductive Health’s President and CEO Jodi Magee and Board Chair Dr. Willie Parker Jodi Magee: Dr. Parker, thank you for joining me to talk about where Physicians for Reproductive Health goes from here, the culmination of our year-long 25th anniversary celebration and of one of the most challenging years in reproductive health, rights, and justice history.

Dr. Willie Parker: It hasn’t been an easy year, particularly across the South and Midwest, where we’re seeing abortion bans and restrictions in one state after another.

But when I look at the future, I see positive change coming, and Physicians for Reproductive Health’s tenacity is one of the reasons why.

JM: There have been signs of progress this year: advances for abortion access in Illinois and Washington, expanded contraceptive access in Maryland, and many more. And, although it has weathered blows over the past year, the Affordable Care Act still stands, thanks to widespread and diligent activism. I’m proud that our doctors have been a part of all of these efforts.

WP: We’re seeing a generation of doctors that is unwilling to sit on the sidelines when it comes to their patients’ well-being and lives. I see physicians coming into our Leadership Training Academy who already have a sharp analysis of how politics affects their work and are fearless about taking on today’s challenges. And Physicians for Reproductive Health has been especially agile in surmounting obstacles.

JM: In establishing our priorities for the next few years, we’re ensuring that we will meet the demands of the political climate and that we bring that vision to life in every facet of Physicians’ work. In order to make sure the voice of evidence-based medicine is heard in a fast-paced environment, we’ve rebranded, launched a new website, and dramatically expanded the reach of our online content to new audiences. We’ve taken major steps toward the official launch of the Partnership for Abortion Provider Safety (PAPS), which is the focus of tonight’s Paddle Raise. I’m thrilled that this crossorganization collaboration that connects abortion providers with information and support services will be live as a secure digital resource hub later this year, and I want to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of the over 30 partner organizations that make up the Partnership. This work could not succeed without the resources they are sharing to make sure abortion providers feel secure and supported at home, at work, and in their communities.

WP: I speak for abortion providers across the country, but particularly those of us in underserved states, when I say how excited I am for this program to become a reality.

When the National Abortion Federation released its latest statistics on the increased harassment and threats that providers are experiencing, it confirmed what many of us already knew to be true. PAPS is not only going to supply concrete resources for our security, but it also reassures us that we’re part of a community that supports us.

JM: I want to highlight our strategic plan’s focus on bringing a reproductive justice lens and principles into the everyday life of the organization. This has come to shape everything we do from the ground up. We’ve created a webinar aimed at educating the medical community about reproductive justice, incorporated reproductive justice content into our Academy trainings, made a commitment to lifting up the voices of doctors of color, and been outspoken about issues of racial and economic inequality that affect patients’ full spectrum of health and well-being.

WP: This work is essential, and it’s important to remember that although we’re facing particular adversity, the injustice we’re seeing in this country isn’t new— especially in the realm of racial inequality, which has been part of our country from its inception. It shouldn’t have taken so long for these struggles to come to the forefront, but in this current moment of great energy, it’s time to get serious about tackling injustice. I’m glad we are doing our part at Physicians.

JM: This past year and a half has made clear that it’s critical for all us in the reproductive health, rights, and justice movement to work together. The battles are too big and too important to try to go it alone.

WP: As well as in the broader progressive community!

We need to work across organizations; across issues like economic justice, immigrant justice, and racial justice; and across areas of professional expertise–not just talking to other people in medicine, but also policy, law, communications, and grassroots organizing.

JM: At Physicians, we’re building new partnerships like our work with the Reproductive Health Access Project, providing physician advocacy trainings that can be put into action by their local networks, and taking on new issues, like providing Physicians’ support to a paid sick leave campaign in Texas. I’m grateful for the dozens of partners we have helping us advance our mission.

In further recognition of how all of us are in this together, we’re introducing a new award this year, the Voices of Change Award. The award will go to a partner who has been an agent for positive change in our movement and has gone to extraordinary lengths to ensure that all people in this country have access to the reproductive health care they want, need, and deserve. I’m elated that we’re presenting the inaugural Voices of Change Award to Cecile Richards, whose leadership has turned Planned Parenthood into an advocacy force to be reckoned with, while also uncompromisingly defending its core mission of providing comprehensive health care to all.

Similarly, as we broaden our scope at Physicians, we’re not losing sight of our roots. I’m thrilled to be once again celebrating our Rashbaum and Tiller Award recipients.

These doctors rock my world.

WP: I can’t imagine better choices than Dr. Roslyn Kade and Dr. Sacheen Nathan, both of whom embody the bravery and perseverance we need in this moment. I’m especially proud that this year we’re recognizing two red state providers, including one from the Deep South. They are in the trenches of this fight every single day.

JM: This new era requires extraordinary dedication from all of us, both doctors and their supporters. In addition to congratulating our courageous, inspiring awardees, I want to acknowledge our Benefit Co-Chairs and Benefit Committee, our staff at Physicians for Reproductive Health who make this event and all of our work a reality (and a joy), and everyone who has supported this organization throughout its 25th anniversary year.

WP: The year 2018 is also the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s final sermon, “I Have Been to the Mountaintop,” which, as I’ve shared before, put me on the path to this work. As we enter into Physicians’ next 25 years and my third year as Board Chair, I think again of his words: “Let us rise up tonight with a greater readiness. Let us stand with a greater determination.”

It shouldn’t have taken so long for these struggles to come to the forefront, but in this current moment of great energy, it’s time to get serious about tackling injustice. I’m glad we are doing our part at Physicians.

Meet Our Advocates: Dr. Roslyn Kade Recipient of the 2018 William K. Rashbaum, MD, Award

What are your pronouns?

She/her/hers

Where are you from?

I grew up outside Philadelphia and have lived in Cincinnati for the last 38 years. I went to medical school and trained in Cincinnati.

What’s your specialty or area of expertise?

Women’s health care including gynecology and abortion services.

What first inspired you to become a doctor?

I was inspired to become a physician offering abortion services based on growing up before Roe and on my family’s strong pro-choice stance. My maternal grandfather was a Norwegian immigrant and had a good female friend who was raped by a priest and died from an illegal abortion. This was formative for my mother’s family and for ours as well. Even my Italian grandmother told me in college that if I ever needed help accessing an abortion, she would help me. What I learned in the process was that women who had economic means had the ability to control their family size through both contraceptive access and abortion done under the table as “miscarriage management.” Women who were poor did not have this access. My grandmother had an abortion in the late 1920s performed in a hospital by a physician. She and my grandfather felt their family size was complete and did not wish to continue an unplanned pregnancy. How fortunate she was to have access to this.

What story about one of your patients most sticks with you?

I am unsure that a single story is more memorable than another. There are patients whose situation is more difficult than others: homeless women, abused women, women with fetal anomalies. Some touch your heart more deeply, but they are all there for the same reason, to get help so they can move on with their lives. In the last few months, we had a patient come in who was in her late second trimester. She had run away from her very abusive partner out of state and was staying in a homeless shelter with her two young children. She had no money, no support either economic or social.

Someone at the shelter had promised to keep her one- and three-year-olds while she had her procedure and then did not. We could not send a taxi for her as she did not have car seats. So the clinic bought her two car seats, and we went and picked up her children and brought them to the clinic where we watched them. All the staff pitched in and went and bought her diapers, baby food, etc. and gave these things to her and her darling children. What she said to us was, “No one has ever been kind to me like this.” Life should not be this hard. I have been given much in life, my mission is to give back.

What current policy issue especially motivates you to be an advocate?

Ohio is politically very anti-choice. The legislature recently passed a Down Syndrome abortion ban, is working on a D&E ban, and now has a proposed law that would ban abortion outright for any reason. Our governor would like Ohio to be the first state to make abortion unavailable, either through bans or TRAP [Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers] laws. He is cleverly (if one wants to call it that) putting TRAP legislation in the budget bill, making it almost impossible to fight. It is hard to find a single policy issue to motivate me. There are so many, they run together.

Who is your social justice hero?

Bea Larsen and Catherine Weiss.

Bea is from Cincinnati and is unknown to our medical community. She is a retired attorney who started what eventually became Legal Aid in our community many, many years ago. She also started mediation and still works tirelessly to try and bring disparate sides to the table to discuss common goals. Her mother actually saw Margaret Sanger as a patient in the 1920s. She is an incredible role model for doing the right thing in the face of adversity. She went to law school after raising her three children to school age. The challenges to her generation of women were far greater than they have been to ours.

Catherine is known to our community for her great work at the ACLU. I had the pleasure of serving on the National Abortion Federation board with her. She is an amazing thinker and is tireless in her social justice efforts. Both women are an honor to know and to call friends.

What does receiving the William K. Rashbaum, MD, Award mean to you?

I believe that it is undeserved. Being in the company of previous recipients is daunting. But it is an honor to know that there are those in our community who believe in me and to know that perhaps, at some moment in time, I influenced others to do this important and rewarding work. I have often said that there is no greater work or job than abortion work.

Every day and with every patient, we have the chance to give them their lives back. To allow them to care for themselves and others in the manner that is best for them. No other job in medicine gives us such great opportunity to actually do what we say we are here, as physicians and clinicians, to do and the reward associated with this. This award represents this gift and responsibility I have been given.

Life should not be this hard. I have been given much in life, my mission is to give back.

Meet Our Advocates: Dr. Sacheen Nathan Recipient of the 2018 George Tiller, MD, Award

What are your pronouns?

She/her/hers Where are you from?

Bronx, New York What’s your specialty or area of expertise?

By training I am an ob/gyn who has done a fellowship in family planning.

What first inspired you to become a doctor?

Honestly, I became a doctor because I did well academically. I checked a box on a college application that got me accepted into an accelerated medical program. I remember discussing with my parents if I should attend the program, and my dad asked me if I thought I might want to be a doctor, and I said maybe. He said I should go through the program just in case. It was the best decision I ever made. I am a better person because I am a doctor. Being a physician has taught me empathy and compassion. It has become a very divisive world. My job, through travel and patient stories, has allowed me to see a different perspective. I am fortunate to have such opportunities in life.

What story about one of your patients most sticks with you?

Early in my career, I had a patient with cerebral palsy. She had an unintended pregnancy that she decided to terminate. I continued to be her physician through her reproductive life cycle. She taught me so much about the assumptions we make about others. Patients come to us with a whole history of obstacles and achievements.

When I practiced in a state with many providers, I was able to work more with women with disabilities. Since we often had to navigate unique gynecologic exams and childbirth scenarios, it taught me so much about thinking outside the box. There are so many ways we can change people’s lives when we are open to what they can teach us.

What current policy issue especially motivates you to be an advocate?

I don’t know if there is just one. I used to sit up in my state where reproductive health care access is protected and maybe hear about a law being passed. It would upset me, and I would say, “Oh well, that’s just (fill in the red state).” Now at least once a year I am in a battle. I see firsthand the laws and the apathy of so many. We need to pay attention. Our voices can change the status quo.

Who is your social justice hero?

Billie Jean King. She fought for equality between women and men. She also helped take the elite sport of tennis and make it available to all. Athletes like her made Title IX possible and changed how we as women are respected and treated in this world. It is hard to make a public stand for social justice. She has been an advocate for both women’s and gay rights. I admire her very much.

What does receiving the George Tiller, MD, Award mean to you?

It gives me a voice. For so long, I wanted to make a difference, but it’s not in my nature to be publicly vocal about how I feel. But I do have a story, and my story has brought me to low-access states and doing what only a few will. Many people in this work do so much and never receive rewards. I am honored to receive this award and represent all of those people.

Elizabeth Marvel

HOST OF THE 2018 VOICES OF COURAGE

American stage and screen actor Elizabeth Marvel can currently be seen in Noah Baumbach’s highly-lauded “The Meyerowitz Stories,” in which she stars opposite Adam Sandler, Dustin Hoffman, and Ben Stiller. She will next be seen on the big screen starring in Nicole Holofcener’s “The Land of Steady Habits” opposite Ben Mendelsohn and Edie Falco.

In the midst of a very busy year, Marvel is in production on season 7 of “Homeland,” playing President Elizabeth Keane in a standout role she began in season 6. In 2016, Marvel appeared as Solicitor General Heather Dunbar on Netflix’s series, “House of Cards” and as Constance Heck on “Fargo.” Other notable television credits include the “The District,” “Lights Out,” “Law and Order: SVU,” “Person of Interest,” “Nurse Jackie,” “30 Rock,” “The Good Wife,” “The Newsroom,” “White Collar,” and “Elementary.”

An integral part of the New York Theater scene, Marvel recently starred as Marc Antony in Shakespeare in the Park’s ground-breaking production of “Julius Caesar.” She has won four Obie Awards for her work Off-Broadway, most notably for her role of Hedda Gabler in Ivo Van Hove’s 2004 revival of the play and received a Drama Desk Award Nomination for her performance in “Fifty Words.” Of Marvel’s numerous Broadway roles, perhaps her most celebrated was that of Brooke Wyeth, which she originated in the Off-Broadway production of “Other Desert Cities.”

In film, Marvel has appeared in the Coen brothers’ “True Grit” and “Burn After Reading,” Spielberg’s “Lincoln,” Tony Gilroy’s “Bourne Legacy,” Roger Michell’s “Hyde Park on Hudson,” J.C. Chandor’s “A Most Violent Year,” and Cameron Crowe’s “Aloha.”

A graduate of Julliard, Marvel currently resides in Brooklyn, New York.

Cecile Richards

RECIPIENT OF THE 2018 VOICES OF CHANGE AWARD Cecile Richards is a national leader for women’s rights and social and economic justice, and the author of New York Times bestseller “Make Trouble.” As President of Planned Parenthood Federation of America and Planned Parenthood Action Fund for more than a decade, Richards worked to increase affordable access to reproductive health care and to build a healthier and safer world for women and young people.

After starting her career as a labor organizer, working with women earning the minimum wage, she went on to start her own grassroots organizations, and later served as Deputy Chief of Staff to House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi. In 2011 and 2012, she was named one of TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World. Richards is a frequent speaker and commentator on politics and progressive issues.

She and her husband, Kirk Adams, have three children and live in New York City and Maine.

The Voices of Change Award, presented for the first time this year, recognizes an agent for positive change in our movement who has gone to extraordinary lengths to ensure that all people in this country have access to the reproductive health care they want, need, and deserve.

Physicians for Reproductive Health is the nation’s only doctor-led advocacy organization dedicated to ensuring that everyone has access to comprehensive reproductive health care services, including contraception and abortion. We use scientific expertise and patients’ real-life experiences to influence legislation, medical education and practice, and public opinion.

Paddle Raise

The Partnership for Abortion Provider Safety: Creating a Safe Environment for Providers of Abortion Care The Partnership for Abortion Provider Safety (PAPS) is a national collaborative of 30+ leading reproductive health, rights, and justice organizations working collectively with leadership from Physicians for Reproductive Health.

Its mission is to supply providers of abortion care with the information and resources they need to feel more secure at home, at work, and in their communities. Thanks to funds raised at the Voices of Courage Benefit over the past two years, PAPS is growing, and this year it will launch a webbased hub of legal, civic, wellness, and community resources for providers in crisis. Despite living under threat from anti-abortion vitriol and harassment, courageous physicians and clinic staff make it possible for women to exercise their fundamental right to control their reproductive lives.

By supporting tonight’s Paddle Raise, you help abortion providers have the resources to feel safe offering this essential care and serving as their patients’ advocates in the public sphere. Thanks to an extraordinary leadership gift of $250,000 for PAPS from Jeannette and Jonathan Rosen, we’re well on our way to making this a reality. All proceeds from this evening’s Paddle Raise will match their transformative gift to make certain PAPS is fully funded.

A Year in the Life of the Leadership Training Academy The Leadership Training Academy Class of 2018 had its first training in October 2017 and immediately started putting their new skills into action, taking on dozens of media and advocacy opportunities throughout the year. Here are just a few of the highlights:

Dr. Ghazaleh Moayedi wrote in Glamour about being a mother and an abortion provider.

Dr. Michelle Nichols spoke at the #HandsOffMyBC rally in Dallas, one of five rallies held at regional Department of Health and Human Services offices in defense of contraceptive access.

On their Capitol Hill Advocacy Day in support of the EACH Woman Act and the Protect Access to Birth Control Act, the Fellows visited 44 legislative offices and participated in a press conference with Rep. Nancy Pelosi and other members of Congress.

Dr. Laura Laursen was interviewed by Newsweek about the increased threats and harassment abortion providers face in the current political climate.

Dr. Cynthia Calixte testified in support of enhanced enforcement of New York City’s regulations of fake women’s health centers at a hearing of the New York City Committee on Consumer Affairs.

Dr. Sanithia Williams talked to the New York Times about the racial disparities in health that are harming Black mothers and infants.

A Year in the Life of the Adolescent Reproductive and Sexual Health Education Program Over the past year, our faculty gave approximately 100 talks to fellow health care providers across the country based on the Adolescent Reproductive and Sexual Health Education Program curriculum, as well as participated in numerous other medical education and advocacy activities. Here are just a few of the highlights:

Dr. Kate Greenberg and Dr. Atsuko Koyama presented storytelling and advocacy workshops at the “One Voice: Connecting Youth to Care” summit in New Orleans on youth rights to access sexual health services, cosponsored

by Physicians for Reproductive Health, the Louisiana Public Health Institute, and Reproductive Education + Advocacy Louisiana.

Dr. Julie Finger, Dr. Kate Greenberg, Dr. Missy Kottke, Dr. Atsuko Koyama, Dr. Ryan Pasternak, and Dr. Valerie Williams participated in a Southern medical professionals’ roundtable on building strong relationships between abortion providers and the rest of the medical community.

Dr. Vinny Chulani presented a module (newly introduced this year) on Commercial and Sexual Exploitation of Children to more than 200 webinar attendees as part of ARSHEP’s five-year partnership with the Florida Department of Health, Duval County.

Dr. Warren Seigel delivered the plenary and Dr. Raul Gutierrez gave a talk on adolescent immigrant health at the Adolescent Sexual Health Symposium hosted by the New York City STD Prevention Training Center.

Dr. Lin-Fan Wang was a presenter at SisterSong’s Let Talk about Sex conference, discussing counseling, support, and referrals for adolescents and young adults seeking abortion care.

First Person: Alison Pruzan, Medical Student, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai The morning after Donald Trump was elected President, I received a call from Dr. Caitlin Fiss.

She was concerned about maintaining women’s reproductive rights in these next few years ahead, and she wanted some “junior advocates” to join her in this effort. I was inspired by her plea, and I accepted the challenge immediately. I knew that my friends and I couldn’t stand by and watch as the new administration removed women’s access to health care. Last year, as part this team of young reproductive health advocates, I co-organized an event with Dr. Kathleen Morrell, an abortion provider in New York City, to present to a group of supporters ages 18-25 about the state of our rights and ways we could all take action.

Today, as both a medical student at Mount Sinai and a Junior Advocate member of the Voices of Courage Benefit Committee, I am honored to be a part of Physicians for Reproductive Health.

Physicians gives me unique insight into the current policy challenges facing reproductive rights, and it has also provided an introduction to doctors who have passions similar to mine, who inspire me, and who I know will continue to guide me. The knowledge I have gained about women’s health and transgender health through being a part of Physicians has confirmed my conviction to stay focused on these crucial issues as I pursue my career in medicine.

I knew that my friends and I couldn’t stand by and watch as the new administration removed women’s access to health care.

Celebrating 500 Voices of Courage On June 3, 2018, the Voices of Courage storytelling campaign celebrated the publication of its 500th story.

To honor the selection of the 500th story, Physicians for Reproductive Health held a competition for stories that inspire, break down stigma, and illustrate the importance of reproductive health care as part of our everyday lives. The winner, Dr. Danielle from South Carolina, had her story brought to life by artist Magnolia Porter.

Join the Voices of Courage Storytelling Campaign Reproductive health is an essential part of everyday life for all of us. Starting on Inauguration Day 2017, we’ve worked to bring that truth to life by telling one story every day about what access or lack of access to reproductive health care services has meant for one person’s life.

We’ve heard stories from the health care providers, patients, family members, and friends whose lives have been touched by issues around birth control, prenatal care, STI testing, cancer screenings, abortion, and sex education.

Stories combat shame and stigma, bring people together as a community, and humanize abstract policy issues. The stories we’ve shared have made clear how the latest news affects real people, like patients forced by restrictive abortion bans to travel out of state for their care or deceived about their pregnancies by fake women’s health centers. Throughout Congress’s repeated assaults on the Affordable Care Act, we received dozens of stories from patients grateful for and eager to protect the ACA’s contraceptive coverage benefits.

The Voices of Courage storytelling campaign is just getting started. We’ve recently introduced new elements, like graphic artist Magnolia Porter’s This Is Life comic strip illustrating some of our most compelling submissions, and more opportunities are coming soon to tell your story in video form. We’re sharing stories until our bodies, families, and communities are safe, and we hope you’ll join us.

Why New Yorkers Need to Get in the Fight for Abortion Access B Y S E N AT O R B R A D H O Y L M A N A N D D R . M E E R A S H A H New York State Senator Brad Hoylman has named Dr. Meera Shah the 2018 New York Senate “Woman of Distinction” Every year following Women’s History Month in March, the New York State Senate convenes its Women of Distinction program, which was created in 1998 to “recognize the historic contribution of New York women who exemplify personal excellence, courage, selflessness, integrity and perseverance and serve as an example to all New Yorkers.” There is no shortage of women to celebrate. But despite the diversity of our honorees across disciplines, ages, and races, none have been abortion providers. The vital work that abortion providers perform in our state of New York and across the country seldom earns the recognition it so deserves. Now it is the perfect time to lift up the work of abortion providers in New York State.

The work of abortion providers requires particular courage and willingness to be on the frontlines of the fight for reproductive freedom and self-determination. Anti-abortion violence and harassment is on the rise, and higher than it’s been in decades. According to the National Abortion Federation, their members reported triple the rates of trespassing and double the rate of threats from 2016 to 2017.

Abortion providers across the country are also unlikely to find allies in the anti-choice Trump administration, including Attorney General Jeff Sessions. In his role as Attorney General, he is tasked with overseeing law enforcement initiatives created to protect providers from harm, but as a senator he voted several times against protections for abortion clinic staff.

Even in a state like New York, we still have work to do. New York’s abortion laws, passed before Roe v.

Wade was decided, are woefully out of date. When people need abortion care later in pregnancy because of unforeseen problems—such as serious obstetric complications or a devastating fetal anomaly—these outdated abortion laws, which unconstitutionally criminalize abortion under these circumstances, prevent them from accessing the care that they need. Many New Yorkers may be surprised to learn that attempts to fix New York’s abortion laws have failed repeatedly in the State Senate. The Reproductive Health Act, a pending bill by Senate Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Senator Liz Krueger, co-sponsored by Senator Hoylman aims to correct this grave problem. It is currently blocked by the Senate’s leadership from coming to the floor for a vote, or even for debate.

As an abortion provider and a New York State Senator, we both adamantly believe that all New Yorkers deserve access to safe and compassionate reproductive health care. Abortion access is a critical part of reproductive health care, but it is also a fundamental issue of freedom. When politicians restrict how and when people access reproductive health care, they lose autonomy over their bodies, and, more broadly, their lives. We believe strongly that the role of the government is to ensure that everyone has access to the medical care they need, not to make such deeply personal and important decisions for others.

We both know that New Yorkers’ lives and self-determination can depend on access to safe abortion care, and we are proud to stand together to make that access a practical reality for everyone. Abortion providers are dedicated, compassionate medical professionals whose work makes our communities not only safer and healthier, but more just. We hope that this will be the first of many recognitions of abortion providers by the State of New York for their unwavering commitment to their communities and the patients they serve.

Amidst unprecedented threats to reproductive freedom, we are grateful that fearless abortion providers all over the country provide comprehensive health care, often in the face of harassment and threats. We celebrate the compassionate health care providers across the country who always put the well-being of their patients first.

Their vital work helps ensure that we can all determine our own destinies, and freely decide if and when to raise a family. We thank abortion providers for all the work they do to support us, our families, and the communities we call home.

William K. Rashbaum, MD IN MEMORIAM Dr. William K. Rashbaum (1926-2005) was a gifted obstetrician and gynecologist, an inspirational teacher, a passionate advocate for a woman’s right to comprehensive reproductive health care, and a co-founder of this organization.

As a young physician, Dr. Rashbaum was regularly called upon to attend to women who had been seriously injured by illegal abortions. Following the legalization of abortion, he performed abortions in New York City and trained hundreds of medical students, residents, and doctors in how to do so.

Dr. Rashbaum had a reputation for speaking his mind, but his patients knew him as a gentle and compassionate man who would hold their hands during difficult times.

George Tiller, MD IN MEMORIAM Dr. George Tiller (1941-2009) was a family physician who provided abortions for more than 30 years, specializing in later procedures. He trained at the University of Kansas School of Medicine and then served as a United States naval flight surgeon in California before returning to Wichita to begin his private practice. His patients soon made it clear that abortion services were an integral part of their health needs.

Dr. Tiller was tremendously active in reproductive rights and health organizations while providing critical services to women in need. Despite facing continual harassment and violence, he advocated tirelessly for the women he served. A former Physicians for Reproductive Health board member, Dr. Tiller mentored colleagues from around the country. He provided compassionate and quality care to women in difficult situations.

On May 31, 2009, Dr. Tiller was killed by an anti-abortion protestor, but his legacy of compassionate care combined with fervent advocacy continues to this day.

In January of 2018, Physicians for Reproductive Health mourned the loss of Dr. Fredrik (Frits) Broekhuizen, who had recently retired from our Board of Directors after seven years of energetic and enthusiastic service.

Dr. Broekhuizen was a strong voice for Midwest abortion activists and a lifelong advocate for women’s autonomous decision-making.

He was inspired to be an abortion provider and advocate in the 1970s, when he practiced medicine in a rural community hospital in Ethiopia and witnessed the devastating impact on patients when abortion is illegal.

As the Medical Director of Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin, and throughout 30 years as a women’s health care provider and a teacher of the next generation of doctors at the University of Wisconsin Medical School, Dr. Broekhuizen was a tireless spokesman for patients’ access to safe abortion care in a state that has been trying to chip away at this right.
