"..Architecture is US. We are what our universe is. Universe is US. We are Earth, Nature, Technology, Politics, Reiligions, Players, Riddlers..."

"A porfolio is not simply a compilation of all the works you've done so far. Instead, it is a brochure, a window of oppurtunity, a glipmse into what type of person you are and what are you're best at. The composition, the quality of design, the narratives, the hobbies et al represents the true self of what you are. All in all, it is a Window to one's Soul. How people will percieve you, depends on what you want to show about yourself."

The main aim or objective of the thesis was "to create an underground urban oasis" and the secondary objective was "to make the thesis a base for further research and development in underground architecture". The site was selected through a thorough proccess , where 4 different sites were judged and marked based on the parameters laid down after doing case studies. The concept was to make the place not a Destination but a Journey. A Journey towards the Riverfront. To do so, the site physically and spiritually acted as a bridge between Urban Fabric and Nature. That was done by the concept of sloping(physical) and Portals(spiritual) to get you till the river. The portals were Public spaces(informal markets), Semi Public spaces(library), Isolation(workshops), Ultimate Isolation(mediation), Relief(fountain) and Nature it self. The journey of a person from the First portal till the 5th portal is to seperate him Physically and spiritually from Urban fabric. When at the Relief, the person would be as blank as a new book and hence writing a new story or introducing Nature into them would be really easy. This was the core of the concept. But, coming down to the technicalities the space dealt with all the limitations of going underground to make people actually go underground and enjoy the unrealistic spaces which are created underground with ease. Few other things which were taken into consideration from the concept stage was Rain water harvesting as Ahmedabad's wate table is as low as 100m, replenishing the underground water table, convert kinetic energy produced by Walking, cycling, gyming et al into electrcity and sell it to either the user

The design incorporated Open work area, Open gym, Underground markets(formal, informal), Swimming pool, Outdoor children's play area, Underground library, Underground cafes, Tennis court, Underground Workshops, Underground Museum, Yoga spaces on ground, Underground meditation chambers, Observation tower, Underground Mountain, and more or less Underground lake. Even after including all this, the Built up area on Land is just 100sqm, whereas the total built up area is 8000sqm. The open usable spaces or urban spaces is 3200sqm. The thesis extracted few design guidelines which could be integrated into any Underground spaces(90% of the time). They are, Mass Void relationship, Vertical layer composition and Spatial hierarchy. The thesis ended with a positive note of Future Possibillities and the Architect's Vision for the future world.

The competition was organised by Ryterna Modul. The competition aimed at creating a Housing for Asylum seekers which would be Transpotable and Modular. It had several conditions, naming the few as fix dimensions for the modules, local design guidelines, transportable, modular, the apartments can not have more than G+1, the staircase must be outside the apartment, the units must have individual toilets et al. The concept evolved from my own thesis, Underground Urban Space. When a person talks about Asylum Seekers and their housing, people select the most neglected and isolated sites for them. The reason being simple, keep the good sites for the actual citizens and not for them. So, the first thing I wanted to do was give them one of the costliest and connected sites possible. Why? Because regardless of their citizenship they are human beings and they deserve better. It isn't their fault their countries fell into war or bankrupcy. But, if I select such a premium site how can I justify it? By going underground. Hence, the whole housing is designed underground. The main concept was to give them an Underground Eslysium in the heart of the city. To connect them to other humans, to make them feel sane. Overall the design is very simple and practical. It follows simple rules of Architecture. The site is handled in a way that the residents shall never feel that their housing is underground. Instead, it should have maximum daylight, greenery and high standard of living. The roof of the apartment is landscaped to not alienise the site from the existing urban fabric and citizens. Hence, this is a 3 layered plan

SITE PLANNING two floors underground and one on the ground. Hence, tripling the floor area. The open space vs built up ratio on -2nd floor is 70-30. Still taking the floor area to 4170sqm out of 3900sqm of the actual site. There are total three types of units in this. 10 Units for 2persons (10%), 30 units for 4 persons(60%) and 12 units for 5 persons(30%) making the total number of units to be 52. The urban plaza consists of Market consisting of all the day to day life items, cafes, and the miniature version of the statue "The Thinker". The Thinker is added to make us realise what are we as a race doing? What are the consequences of a war? Till what extent will we go further down to win? To make us think, why are Asylees there in the first place? Who made them? and ultimately to make us realise, Asylees or not, we all are but Human Beings. Then, the actual site was a garden and it is handled with care in a way that all the trees with their roots were shifted below hence not disturbing the ecosystem much. Last but not the least, it has Wooden decks looking into the spaces. This wooden decks are a wonderful way to connect people together physically as well.

KEY PLAN

BIRD'S VIEW

The competition was organised by the website "Archasm". The competition aimed at making an iconic building for the city of Mumbai, as iconic as the Hollywood sign on the Mountain. The aim was to design a Vertical Film City or Film City Tower, one of it's first kind in the world. The competition as such had no guidelines or boundaries. Except for the fact that the site was already choosen of area 15000sqm, where we were supposed to make minimum of 1,00,000sqm of builtup area. This was the only condition of the whole project, and as everybody knows the less parameters the more difficult. The concept started with a Phoenix. Phoenix, a bird which borns out of her own ashes. The legendarical and mystical bird was selected as it represented the city's spirit, the city of Mumbai. Mumbai, a never dying or stopping city which after terrorist's attacks doesn't stop. They rise from dead. Hence, the Phoenix represented the city perfectly. What started as a Tower, ended up being a skyscraper. Lots of iterations and alternatives were created. But one thing led to another, and I changed the whole concept. The old concept was a little superficial I thought. The new concept was the idea of Dualities. Fire and Ice, Personality and Character, Mountain and Valley et al. The concept is all about space which has a Personality as well as a Deep character, because having a strong personality is a must but if not supported by a deep character it is nothing but an empty shell. The skyscraper was designed in such a way that it has 2 parts. One, above

9 water representing Fire, Personality and another underwater representing Ice, Character et al. The upper structure is a Pyramid and the below structure is an Inverted Pyramid. The Personality has all the activities which needs daylight more, and the Character has all the activities which doesn't require much daylighting. The total height of the whole Structure is 900m. The digits celebrates next 900 years(already finished 100 years) of Hindi film cinema. This 900m is divided in two, hence the heights are 450+450m. The structure is a shell structure with a core. The shell takes the form of Fire and Water waves, with the central core and horizontal floors to counter support them. The waves are only on two opposite corners giving way for cross ventillation to the whole system. The cross ventillation has Algae on the walls, to purify as well as reuse the algae to produce electricity. The waves have LEDs on them, and are connected with apps i.e. live feed from the people. The more happy people will be, the brighter or fiercer the red lights will animate on the top side and the more number of people will come to the place, the more calmer the blue lights will animate in the underwater. This gives it a unique sense of iconism to it. The bridge connecting the InVortex900 with Mumbai, has Wind towers producing electricity, making the support for the bridge and the bridge has Parking incorporated and MagLav cars to take people to the building as noone is allowed to take their cars there. Being in the water, it has added advantage of direct access by Ships.

Architecture is a never ending journey and hence can never have THE END. Just like that, an Architect's portfolio can or rather should never have an end, because it is but a journey........

PORTFOLIO'16

-PREYAN MEHTA "..the bridge is Architecture, the traveller is an Architect. An Architect constantly needs to work between his Left brain and Right brain switching between his left and right brains. For being an Architect, he needs to Understand and Think on all the aspects, Practicality, Aesthetics, Culture, Composition, Religion, Proportion, Structure, Scale simultaneously. Architecture brings peace and harmony between all the aspects of life. It is one field just like Medicine which deals with well being of Living beings..."
