SALAAH (Praying in Islam)

Salah in Islam is a special prayer which was specified to the Prophet Mohammad (S.A.W) through revelation. Salah helps guide a Muslim for a healthy and well-organized life by dividing the day into intervals. As Muslims we know that we have to pray our 5 daily prayers at the correct time.

Allah states in the holy Quran.

Those who are steadfast in seeking the face of their Lord, and establish Salah and give from the provision we have given them, secretly and openly, and stave off evil with good; it is they who will have the ultimate Abode.

(Surat ar-Ra'd, 22)

Rasulullah (S.A.W) said, “The first matter that the slave will be brought to account for on the Day of Judgment is the prayer. If it is sound, then the rest of his deeds will be sound; and if it is bad, then the rest of his deeds will be bad."

Prayer provides the following sociological benefits: The sense of coming together, knowing one another, friendship, and reinforcement of the bonds of brotherhood. This is why we should all make a firm intention that we will try to perform all our Salah at its correct time.

A Fardh, an obligatory act, is a definite order of Allah. If either one obligatory act or several obligatory acts of a Salah are not done, that Salah is incomplete. This is why it is very important to practice our Salah, and if we have doubts about the correctness of our Salah, we should try to make every effort to make our Salah the best possible, this can be done by visiting the Scholars and those who are well practised about Salah.

Our Salah also provides spiritual benefits, when we perform our Salah properly, the joy of being in Allah’s presence is witnessed. It

Life is a gift from Allah, the blessings of Allah are countless. For a Muslim, death marks the transition from one state of existence to the next. Islam teaches that life on earth is an examination. The life to come is the eternal abode where one will reap the fruit of one's endeavours on earth. Death is therefore not to be resisted or fought against, but rather something to be accepted as part of the overall divine plan.

The Prophet said, “Hasten to perform good deeds before seven things: Are you waiting for poverty which makes you forget? Or wealth which burdens you? Or a debilitating disease or senility? Or an unexpected death or the False Messiah? Or is it evil in the unseen you are waiting for, or the Hour itself? The Hour will be bitter and terrible.”

Allah says in the Quran, every soul shall taste death.

Islam views life as sacred and a trust from Allah. Certain death customs are almost universally practised by Muslims. Ideally Muslims would wish to die in their home.

hospital setting is not in keeping with the Islamic tradition. The dying person will expect to be visited by friends and relatives, who are encouraged to pray for his or her welfare in the life to come. This is a time when Muslims seek each other’s' forgiveness for excesses that may have been inadvertently committed.

The daily prayers play a pivotal role in the day-to-day life of a Muslim, and prayer undertakes an even greater role in times of suffering and distress. Family members will encourage the dying to continue with their prayers as long as they are able to do so.

Before the prayer, ablution is performed; bed-bound patients will need help during this process.

We should all try to prepare for our death, and try to keep Allah happy at all times. This life is temporary and the life hereafter is forever.

When we are born, Adhaan is given, When we die, Salaah is prayed. that’s how short life is. The time between Adhaan and Salaah.

GCSE & EXAMS

Before you study for your next exam, you may want to use a few strategies to boost your memory and there are a number of tried and tested techniques for achieving this. These strategies have been established within Cognitive Psychology Literature and offer a number of great ways to improve memory, enhance recall and increase retention of information.

It is very important that our intention is always clean. The intention should be that I am studying this subject to please Allah, and to create anice life in this world and in the life hereafter.

1. Focus your attention on the materials you are studying. Attention is one of the major components of memory. In order for information to move from short-term memory into long-term memory, you need to actively attend to this information. This will mean a person will have to stay away from sins, for example looking and listening to what is classified as forbidden. Try to study in a place free of distractions such as television, music and other diversions.

2. Structure and organize the information you are studying. Researchers have found that information is organized in memory in related clusters. You can take advantage of this by structuring and organizing the materials you are studying. Try grouping similar concepts and

terms together, or make an outline of your notes and textbook readings to help group related concepts. Always have regular breaks, pray the five times Salaah, perform wudhu and get fresh for Salaah and this wil help focus with your revision.

3. Relate new information to things you already know. - When you are studying unfamiliar material, take the time to think about how this information relates to things that you already know.

By establishing relationships between new ideas and previously existing memories, you can dramatically increase the likelihood of recalling the recently learned information.

4. Visualize concepts to improve memory and recall. - Many people benefit greatly from visualizing the information they study. Pay attention to the charts and other graphs in your textbooks. If you do not have visual hints to help, try creating your own. Draw charts or figures in the margins of your notes or use highlighters or pens in different colours to group related ideas in your written study materials.

5. Teach new concepts to another person. - Research suggests that reading materials out loud significantly improves memory of the material. Educators and Psychologists have also discovered that having students actually teach new concepts to others enhances understanding and recall. You can use this approach in your own studies by

teaching new concepts and information to a friend or a study partner.

6. Pay extra attention to difficult information. - Have you ever noticed how it’s sometimes easier to remember information at the beginning or end of a chapter?

Researchers have found that the position of information can play a role in recall, which is known as the serial position effect. While recalling middle information can be difficult, you can overcome this problem by spending extra time rehearsing this information or try restructuring the information so it will be easier to remember. When you come across an especially difficult concept, devote some extra time to memorizing the information.

7. Vary your study routine. Another great way to increase your recall is to occasionally change your study routine. If you are accustomed to studying in one specific location, try moving to a different spot to study. If you study in the evening, try to spend a few minutes each morning reviewing the information you studied the previous night. By adding an element of novelty to your study sessions, you can increase the effectiveness of your efforts and significantly improve your long-term recall.

8. Food & Drink to boost revision - The following food and drink is always beneficial for improving ones memory. Zam Zam water, fresh dates, almonds, green tea, fish, fruits and vegetables.

TIME The value of Time in Islam is defined as ‘the loftiest and most precious of all primary blessings and is the substance of life, the sphere in which man exists, the citadel of his spirit.

As many of us know, Allah swears by time in the Quran, in Surah Al Asr. Subsequently we should ask ourselves are we at loss with time? and wouldn’t the intelligent and wise people invest their time in the actions that will outlast his/her existence in this world?

Every human life is a given period of time.

Life consists of a limited number of days and every day that passes results in a loss of our time on earth until the day when our time here is finished.

We live in an age where time is used and abused, this is why we should try to take these inspiring words of advice from our elders and pious who took great care of every second. One key element is staying organised, keeping a diary and writing daily tasks.

Reflection: For Allah has warned us of those who are wasteful with time, and says: Did we not grant you a life long enough for him who reflected to reflect therein?

FLYS! Mixing less with people: The Sahabah would reduce their social time which is prevalent in our daily activities today.

Constantly reading, writing and worshiping Allah: This is paramount to the first point, the Sahabah’s reflection on the knowledge they gained led to the numerous works presented before us. This is testimony of their vigilance in worshiping Allah and being cautious not to waste a single moment. Their time was spent in reading, writing, remembrance and spreading this beneficial knowledge.

Is our life in this universe anything other than the time which passes between birth and death? Gold can vanish, but we may acquire many times what we lose. But we cannot return lost time that has passed! Therefore time is more precious than gold and dearer than diamonds or any precious stone or any profit, for it is life itself.

This is why it is very important that every day we evaluate our day, and try to ponder and reflect upon the time we spent without the remembrance of Allah.

Eating less: The Sahabah (companions of the Prophet) were careful not to lose even a second of their time because of eating favouring the pursuit of knowledge. Such that in some of the stories written they ate only bread as their soul was satisfied with the food of knowledge.

ONE ANOTHER & UNITY Every child has heard the statement, "Respect your elders!" Of course your mother was not only referring to grandparents and uncles but to all people.

Accounts or sneaking out early? No matter what seemingly legitimate excuse you have, seeing it as a respect issue takes the wind out of your rationalization sails.

As you get older and smarter, you discovered the principle that said, "Respect must be earned." If someone didn't earn it or deserve it, they didn't get it. That took the pressure off and your whole view of respect changed; now there were strings attached.

As a result you developed two categories for respect: things you respected and things you didn't.

From then on it was easy and convenient to simply put things in the "no respect" category and let your feelings be your guide. Unfortunately, as time went by, rather than making life easier, it got harder.

Understand that even in the heat of a battle, respect plays a critical role. In fact, respect can even be a secret weapon.

There's nothing better to disarm an angry customer or harassing supervisor than to respond with respect and professionalism. There's no better way to oppose an unjust rule or change the system than to communicate your ďŹ rm opposition with respect.

In the big picture, you were being taught that respect equals good behaviour and good behaviour equals respect. Respect means to respect each and everything around us. Instead, look at the issue from the respect point of view.

One of the most important things you can teach your child is respect.

Keep in mind that respect is not the same as obedience.

Children might obey because they are afraid. If they respect you, they will obey because they know you want what's best for them.

The best way to teach respect is to show respect. When a child experiences respect, they know what it feels like and begin to understand how important it is.

Keep in mind the saying "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

Respect is an attitude. Being respectful helps a child succeed in life. If children don't have respect for peers, authority, or themselves, it's almost impossible for them to succeed.

A respectful child takes care of belongings and responsibilities, and a respectful child gets along with peers.

Schools teach children about respect, but parents have the most inuence on how respectful children become.

Until children show respect at home, it's unlikely they will show it anywhere else.

Be honest - If you do something wrong, admit it and apologize.

Always respect everything around you, especially your parents, teachers and all elders. It is also very important to show mercy to the young ones.

How fortunate are we?

Gratitude in Islam is one of the most fundamental aspects of this religion. A Muslim is not merely one cognisant of the fact that the creator of the Universe is one and is responsible for everything he has in this life i.e. his consciousness, his health, his family, his sanity and his wealth but also realizes that it is his obligation to express gratitude to his Lord.

The Arabic word for gratitude is “shukr” and the opposite of gratitude is “kufr”, which also happens to be the word for disbelief. So rejection of Allah and his religion is intimately connected to ungratefulness. We have so many beautiful blessings around us and in us.

Why is life so difficult?

Many of us focus on our problems and difficulties and say in despair “why is life so difficult?” This is natural, but it is not something a Muslim should do as he should be stronger in character. There are different reasons why people say “why is life so difficult?”

Someone may have all the basic necessities of life but desires something else. This may be caused by different reasons. It may just be caused by pure greed, a desire for sensual fulfilment or by the sort of people they mix with. A rich kid may want a Ferrari for his 18th birthday and fails to get it, and is then filled with frustration and anger. The question we have to ask ourselves is do we really want and need the the thing which we desire and cannot attain. If we do really need it can’t we wait for it a little longer? If we can’t wait and we are irritated, this highlights the fact that we are impatient. Patience is something key to the Muslim character and is something developed upon during the month of Ramadan when we fast from dawn to dusk.

We should realise the favours bestowed upon us and have it present in our minds constantly,

because this leads us to remember the giver of favours and therefore being grateful to and loving Allah, who is of course the Bestower of favours. This would therefore make one exert more effort in worshipping Allaah.

5 Ways to Show Gratitude to Allah (SWT) 1. PRAY YOUR SALAH – This is the most important obligation as a Muslim. Allah (swt) has given us so much and in return he commands that we pray at least at the minimum of 5 times a day. If you happen to miss any Salah’s, make sure you make them up.

2. GIVE SADAQA – There are people in the world who have far less than they need. One of the ways to thank Allah (swt) is to share the blessings he’s given you with other people such as orphans, homeless, etc.

3. DU’A - There is a du’a for just about everything in life. Whether it’s putting on new clothes or waking up from sleep, the ability to remember Allah (swt) throughout the day shows that Allah (swt) is at the center of your life.

4. THANK OTHERS – No one is completely independent in life. We seek help from others and in return Allah (swt) enables them to do so. It is important you thank anyone that offers assistance and help because Prophet Muhammad (S) said: “He has not thanked Allah who has not thanked people.” (Sunan, Abu Dawud) Live for Allah swt - It’s difficult in a world where there are constant tribulations and fitnah, but as long as you cling to the Deen, Qur’an and Sunnah you will always find your relationship with Allah (swt) constantly improving or renewed.

Ramadan

The Holy Prophet ‫ﷺ‬ addressed us on the last day of Sha'ban wherein he said: "O men, a great, blessed month has cast its shadow upon you. It is a month which contains a night far better than one thousand months, a month that Allah has made it obligatory to fast therein and made in commendable to stand up praying in its nights. If someone seeks Allah's nearness by offering an optional act of worship in this month, it will be as rewarding as to offer an obligatory worship in other days, and if someone performs an obligatory act of worship in this month, it will carry as much reward as the reward of performing seventy obligatory acts of worship in other days. It is the month of patience and

the reward of patience is Jannah (paradise). It is a month of sympathy, a month in which the provision for a believer is increased. If someone provides another person with food to make iftaar (terminate one's fast by eating or drinking something), it will cause forgiveness of his sins and freedom from hell and he will be awarded the same thawaab (reward) as the fasting person will be rewarded for his fast, without decreasing his own thawaab."

Allah states in the Quran, "O you who believe fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you so that you can learn Taqwa" (Quran 2:183)

The Arabic word Taqwa is translated in many ways including God consciousness, God fearing, piety, and self-restraining. Thus we are asked to fast daily for one month from dawn to dusk.

But why do we need to fast? It is our experience that temptations and ways of the world tend to spoil our purity and austerity. Thus we indulge in food all the time, snacking and eating the whole day, heading to obesity. We drink too much coffee, tea, and carbonated drinks. When we argue, we leave our decency aside and resort to vulgar talk and even physical ďŹ ghting. Now when one is fasting, he or she cannot do all of that.

When he looks at the mouth-watering food, he cannot even taste it and he has to give up snacking and eating.

Lets all make this Ramadan a life changer, lets try to make a ďŹ rm intention that we will all fast properly, and stay away from all sins. TAQWA is the ultimate goal of our Ramadan preparations, to be among the righteous for now and forever!

SHISHA THE NEW TREND...

Shisha smoking also known as hookah smoking, started in the far east and has since spread throughout the world. The consequences of smoking shisha can be very dangerous and hazardous to the health of the user.

Smoking shisha is thought to be not as harmful as smoking a cigarette, but to the contrary shisha smoking is more damaging to the human body than cigarettes. There are a full range of health risks connected with shisha smoking.

A shisha is made up of four sectional parts. There is a base which is in some measure filled with water, a bowl that holds the tobacco, and a hose and pipe used for inhaling the smoke.

Shisha is very dangerous to the user, because it allows the smoker to inhale a much greater volume of smoke, much more than they could from cigarettes. Shisha smoke is filled with dangerous toxins like, carbon monoxide, tar, nicotine and other chemicals that are usually found in cigarettes. One of the most serious health concerns involved with smoking shisha is cancer. The chance of developing some form of cancer increases by 50% and the main cancers associated with smoking Shisha is lung,

mouth, and throat cancers.

Shisha smoking has also been linked to an increased chance of developing gum disease.

Emphysema, asthma, lung disease, low sperm count and other health problems have been linked to smoking Shisha.

Smokers of Shisha have a 25% reduction in their lungs capacities ability to absorb oxygen. The action of smoking Shisha are profoundly detrimental.

Shisha smokers have an increased chance of becoming addicts. Shisha smoking can lead to everyday water pipe use, which increases the chance of developing one of the above named diseases.

The spread of communicable diseases is related with the sharing of hookah pipes. Saliva passed on from one infected individual, to a non-infected individual through an unwashed mouthpiece can spread common illnesses like the flu and cold virus. Children are especially vulnerable to the actions of those smoking shisha, and more apt to developed and suffer from asthma, repertory illnesses, and crib death. It has been reported that in the eastern countries children as young as seven have been observed smoking shisha.

Smoking Shisha in a single session can create carbon monoxide levels more than 4 to 5 times higher than that created by a cigarette smoker.

Increased carbon monoxide levels have been linked to brain damage, and can result in unconsciousness. It has been reported that one smoking session of shisha is equivalent to smoking 100 cigarettes. The numbers and statistics speaks volumes about the health risks associated with shisha smoking.

Another problem with smoking shisha, is the environment in which it is smoked. The environment is usually in a crowded cafe designated specifically for smoking shisha. This adds an extra risk for non-smokers, too developed a lung disease from second-hand smoke.

The action of using shisha doesn't just hurt the user, but it can also hurt those around them. The indoor act of smoking shisha increases the harm of second-hand smoke by more than 30%. Shisha smoking is seen as a social activity, which misleads users into thinking that it isn't as harmful as smoking a cigarette. From the Islamic side, Shisha is not good at all and has many harmful effects.
