Interpretation: One subject occupies, settles, establish control and exploits the other. It is a fundamental mechanism of the survival of all organisms.

DEVICES AND PROCESS

The process of colonisation can be generally categorised into few different stages, namely origination, movement, resistance and expansion. A device with tilting mechanism is designed. Two different material will be representing the two subjects: the coloniser and the colonised.

The two materials will be first put on the two ends of the device’s canvas represents where the two subjects originally locates.

The tilting of the device allows the two materials to shift in its position when tilting, resembling movement. When the two materials collides, resistance is involved.

PHASE 2: SPATIAL GENERATOR

AT HARD EDGE SITE

As we were given a hard edge condition, in which one side of the narrow 60 metre long site is the bund while the other side is an untraverable parti line, we came up with the following interpretation: First, our project should be about the colonisation of water, and of height. Given the formidable 5-storey height of what’s beyond the hard edge, we should create a space which subverts such a condition. Similarly, the foundations of our project goes into the water, helping the volumes to enter the volume of space above water - breaking up the otherwise untraversable, clean-cut edge of water.

Second, transformation along the site. A monotonous structure across a long strip of site would be quite intimidating, and we would like to introduce an element of rhythm across long stretches of corridor-like space.

To find a form for our project, we took reference of organic growth represented in Constant’s New Babylon and the Metabolist movement: systems that stretch and grow across the site, with masses resting on frames built atop the existing condition.

For our first stage, we developed many different modules which fit with the criteria of “mass hoisted by frame”. Together, the modules formed an organic system in which each module represented a different method of building: some were supported by triangular trusses, some occupied the full extant of rectilinear volumes, while some occupied half, others with a void for skylight, etc.. From this stage we discovered that we would like to project that TRANSFORMS along the site.

For our second stage, we wanted to develop a set of frames which would then be repeated across the scheme. We started by developing several different forms - eventually settling on one which created a DIRECTIONALITY TOWARDS WATER. The frame would protrude where the mass on top also extends outward.

THE ROTATING MASS

For our third stage, we created a mass with greater transformation, and built a frame around it - the wave-like transformation of the frame would then become a significant part of our final stage. The stilts which supported the cut mass extend out into the water, while the columns set a regular RHYTHM on the bund.

THE METRONYMIC CORRIDOR

Combining Preston’s “colonization” topic and Rochelle’s musical theme, a sequential set of structures which go into the water is created.

To further develop our RHYTHM theme: Curves were expressed through a rhythmic sequence of frames. The curves could each be written or interpreted as a melody; while the regular elements as the stable bassline; the 16 bays represent 4 bars each of 4 beats. The concrete mass indicates a growing volume, and expresses the model as a system rather than a terminating scheme. The changing landscape thus helps to mitigate the hard

PHASE 3: SITUATING AND ADAPTING

Established after World War II by Chinese immigrants who settled in Deep Bay, gei wai are traditional brackishwater shrimp and fish farms that use more environmentally friendly methods compared to many modern farms.

This ecologically sound, low-impact approach has helped to sustain the lives of both farmers and the countless species of fish-eating animals of Mai Po. (Thomas Gomersall, WWFHK, 2019)

Through a serendipitous adaptation of natural marshland into fishponds - which happened to have become a convenient feeding ground for birds and hence maintained a new sort of ecological balance - the gei wai have become an integral part of Hong Kong’s wetland ecosystem.

Unfortunately the gei wai now faces the pressures of encroachment - Colonisation if you will - by multiple forces - first, the impending urban sprawl from shenzhen that is scarcely curbed by Shenzhen River, and most likely to be facilitated by northern metropolitan area development as proposed by the Chief Executive of Hong Kong. Besides, Massive transit facilities, the Lok Ma Chau Control Point and the Lok Ma Chau Station, and new developments such as The Lok Ma Chau Loop are bringing pressure to the ecology of Gai Wai. But most importantly - for decades, brown fields have begun to invade through fishpond territory - and it is not only by sheer growth in numbers - but in fragmenting otherwise continuous pieces of gei wai and green areas, and introducing manmade disturbances such as noise pollution which disrupt the current ecological cycle.

The Site, and on a larger scale, Gei Wai, are being seiged. These disruptive forces are gaining momentum at unprecedented speed and must be stopped.

The building will be situated along the length of brownfield + greenfiled parti line. The proposed multi-storey carpark will condense ground level open carparks that are common in brownfield sites into one three dimensional mass, sheltered and semi-enclosed. The carpark can be conceived as battlements that separates the brown and greenfields. It is a protective mechanism for the greenfields. On the other hand, tourism function of the building will be adapted on the otherside of the carpark, exposed to the greenfields and allows interaction between visitors and the nature.

CARPARK + WAREHOUSE ---->/ + HUMAN ACTIVITIES In order to free up brownfield sites, it is vital to provide alternative sites for brownfield activities to occur. Therefore, the proposed building complex will provide transitional spaces to house industrial programmes. It aims to aggregate brownfield programmes and car park into one single building thereby releasing the brownfield for other purposes. With brownfield programmes incorporated, they physicality of the building must be redesigned for heavy machines to occupy.

Digital Analysis with Deformation of Centre Pompidou’s Structure

The proposed building’s structural strategy aims to use a super lightweight (visually) strategy as opposed to conventional carpark/ warehouse, where they have robust structures. In order to achieve that, a Gerber Beam System was used - hinges are introduced onto an otherwise continuous beam. The hinges do not rest on the vertical supports, but are instead positioned between an overhanging edges of the beam, to form a “saddle” at the centre as part of the beam. The Gerber beam would have fewer potential deformations compared to a continuous beam

Built in 1989, the Immigration Control Point is the third road crossing between Hong Kong and China. The increased traffic around the station caused noise and air pollution to nearby villages.

Dating back to the 1930s, when the area was covered with abundant farmlands, these villages are resided with farmers. Until Today, many of the traditional temples and shrines are still being preserved well.

Eventually we hope that this building, built with such large and free spaces, could be occupied by a recreational program which reads as a mark of history of the colonization of brown fields upon the wetlands,
