TAKING FLIGHT

ARDMORE CERAMIC ART TAKES FLIGHT:

A Celebratory Exhibition at Cape Town’s Iconic Mount Nelson Hotel

In 2025, Ardmore Ceramic Art, founded in 1985 by the visionary Fée Halsted, will proudly celebrate its 40th anniversary. To mark this momentous milestone, Ardmore invites art enthusiasts and collectors to an exclusive exhibition hosted at Cape Town’s prestigious Mount Nelson Hotel from 20–23 February 2025.

This year’s theme, “Taking Flight,” symbolizes new beginnings and Ardmore’s continued evolution as a beacon of creativity and craftsmanship. Central to this celebration is the launch of a new signature scarf design, “Phinda Pride,” which captures the essence of Ardmore’s artistry. The design features two regal lions poised in a fantastical jungle teeming with vibrant life. Winding foliage and dynamic plant forms create a mesmerizing backdrop, while the presence of Turacos—known in African folklore as symbols of freedom and new beginnings—adds a layer of poetic significance.

The Turacos, with their striking colors and graceful movements across the tree canopy, epitomize Ardmore’s spirit of adaptability and innovation. This motif has inspired Fée Halsted and her team of talented artists to craft a majestic collection of ceramic artworks that will be unveiled at The Mount Nelson exhibition.

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to witness the next chapter of Ardmore’s extraordinary journey.

Timed to coincide with Cape Town’s thriving art season, when the city becomes a hub for international collectors and enthusiasts, the exhibition promises to be a feast for the senses. As art meets design in this dynamic cultural capital, Ardmore’s 40th-anniversary collection will offer a unique blend of tradition, storytelling, and contemporary elegance.

In an era where time seems to accelerate with each passing moment, there’s profound beauty in pausing to honour the milestones that shape our collective journey. This issue celebrates remarkable anniversaries that speak to the enduring power of craftsmanship and vision – a century of Montblanc’s Meisterstück, whose timeless elegance has witnessed countless stories written across generations, and three decades since A. Lange & Söhne’s phoenix-like resurrection, marked by two exceptional Lange 1 timepieces that embody both heritage and innovation.

As we traverse the magnificent landscapes of Africa, from the whispered secrets of ancient savannas to the pulse of contemporary urban spaces, we are reminded that luxury is not merely about possession – it is about connection. Connection to the earth beneath our feet, to the communities that welcome us, and to our own deeper sense of purpose. This understanding has never been more vital and never more beautifully portrayed than in the escapes imagined and made real by Luxury Frontiers. Today’s conscious traveller seeks not

just extraordinary experiences but meaningful engagement with the world. Our curated journeys reflect this evolution, where sustainable practices are not just buzzwords but fundamental principles that honour both tradition and tomorrow.

In these pages, you will discover how celebrated artisans and visionary creators are redefining luxury through the lens of responsibility and reverence – for our planet, our heritage, and our shared future. We explore how life’s most precious moments are increasingly celebrated with mindful intention, where the joy of achievement harmonises with the wisdom of preservation.

As we honour these significant anniversaries and embrace new adventures, we are reminded that true luxury lies in the delicate balance between preserving what is precious and pioneering what is possible. It is about writing our own stories while remaining conscious of the legacy we leave behind.

Welcome to an issue that celebrates time – not just in its keeping, but in its meaning.

defining TRUE LUXURY

FOUNDED IN 2011, LUXURY FRONTIERS HAS REDEFINED LUXURY HOSPITALITY, ACTIVELY PROMOTING SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURAL DESIGNS THAT BRING GUESTS CLOSER TO NATURE. AS GRAEME LABE, CO-FOUNDER AND MANAGING PARTNER, EXPLAINS, “THE EXPERIENCE OF THE REAL IS TRUE LUXURY.”

This philosophy permeates the company’s design approach, aiming to create deeply immersive experiences grounded in local contexts.

Whether designing remote tented camps or boutique lodges, the process begins the same way for Luxury Frontiers—by fully immersing themselves in the natural landscape and cultural heritage. “Walking a site before we plan or design anything – absorbing the landscape, the trees, the people, the use of materials – forms a physical and mental understanding of place and

people,” describes Labe. This, along with in-depth discussions with clients to fully understand their needs and vision, and, of course, further research into the site and surrounds, informs every design decision, from locations to materials and experiences. “Staying true to the narrative remains central,” Labe emphasises.

Admittedly, the concept is not novel in Africa, where luxury safari “glamping” has been popular for quite some time. What Labe and co-founder Luca Franco recognised, though, was that light-on-earth experiential travel where guests are deeply immersed in the natural surroundings could also be ultra-luxury experiences, and that, in fact, the experience of ‘the real’ is

the very definition of true luxury. They also recognised that the return to ‘the real’ is an innate need that more and more people are tuning in to, and that, with the advancement of technologies around off-grid energy, water and waste handling, it was possible to offer these experiences virtually anywhere. This realisation saw them knocking on the doors of some of the world’s leading hospitality brands to drive home the concept and, as they say, the rest is history. The approach has produced internationally-acclaimed projects spanning six continents.

Two standout examples representing the depth of Luxury Frontiers’ contextual design are Camp Sarika at Amangiri and Naviva, a Four Seasons Resort.

CAMP SARIKA AT AMANGIRI: PIONEERING LUXURY HOSPITALITY IN THE UTAH DESERT

Tucked into the dramatic red rock canyons of southern Utah, Camp Sarika introduced an unprecedented level of luxury glamping to the American West. To meet the vision of creating “the finest and most luxurious Tented Village in the Western Hemisphere,” as client Homi Vazifdar describes, Luxury Frontiers had to innovate.

The result comprises ten lavish tented pavilions that can withstand weather extremes from -10° to 40°C, along with open-air pavilions, two spas, and a stunning swimming pool surveying boundless canyon vistas. Despite the stark desert climate, the bespoke architectural designs foster a profound sense of place, from the neutral tones blending into the ridged sandstone to interiors inspired by nomadic cultures that once inhabited the region. As Labe summarises, “The tents’ earthy tones and subtle forms allowed them to feel like standalone elements that harmonised with the surrounding wilderness, rather than imposing on it.” Even in this sparse environment, Luxury Frontiers manifested a new vision of luxury that elevates guests’ connections with the singular desert ecology.

NAVIVA RESORT: REVOLUTIONIZING BIOPHILIC DESIGN IN MEXICO

On an untouched peninsula bordering Mexico’s Pacific coast, Luxury Frontiers introduced an unprecedented wellness retreat for Four Seasons. As their first foray into luxury tents and lodges in the Americas, Luxury Frontiers pioneered high-end experiential hospitality for the brand. The resort comprises 15 lavishly appointed tents among 48 forested acres, with extensive indoor-outdoor living spaces opening to tropical forests and sea views. As described by the resort’s General Manager, “Naviva celebrates biophilic design and such respect for the environment. Every aspect shows such spirit.” From locally-crafted furnishings to open-air spa sanctuaries, Naviva fosters profound nature and cultural connections unseen in traditional five-star properties.

Summarising the project’s ethos, Labe explains “the design extends to the experiences, amenities, and guest activities available on-site, such as access to a traditional Mexican temazcal, an outdoor gym, and a serene jungle oasis.” By holistically integrating local wisdom and materials, Naviva manifests Luxury Frontiers’ philosophy that true luxury lies in providing “the experience of the real.”

From locallycrafted furnishings to open-air spa sanctuaries, Naviva fosters profound nature and cultural connections unseen in traditional fivestar properties

When asked which of their projects he would most like to visit as a tourist his response was immediate. “Can it be something we’re working on right now?” When I responded in the affirmative, Graeme said, “Gorilla trekking is a life-changing experience,” and then went on to explain that Luxury Frontiers is currently rebuilding Abercrombie & Kent’s Gorilla Forest Camp in Uganda, soon to be Gorilla Forest Lodge, an A&K Sanctuary.

GORILLA FOREST LODGE: A SANCTUARY REBORN IN UGANDA Nestled deep within Uganda’s ancient Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Gorilla Forest Lodge is undergoing a spectacular rebirth. Slated to reopen in mid-2025, the intimate luxury lodge is being completely transformed to further immerse guests within this precious wilderness realm.

Each of the ten expansive suites draws inspiration from the surrounding rainforest, with natural materials, rich textures, and earthy hues evoking a sense of harmony. Floor-to-ceiling windows seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor living, while spacious verandas invite one to bask in the sights and sounds of the forest.

This biophilic design flows throughout the lodge’s refined spaces, from the breezy lounge and elegant restaurant to the newly expanded spa sanctuary. Tactile clay plaster walls, woven banana leaf ceilings, and framed vistas establish a graceful sense of flow mimicking the rhythms of the forest.

Imagine waking each morning to the symphony of exotic birdsong and gently rustling leaves, then soaking in the vistas from your sumptuous suite or deep-set freestanding stone bath. The days pass in a balance of wilderness adventures –from exhilarating gorilla treks to forest walks and village visits – and indulgent relaxation, with impeccable dining drawing from fresh local flavours.

From rainwater harvesting to responsible materials and strict environmental controls, the revived Gorilla Forest Lodge sets a new benchmark in sustainable luxury. This is a sanctuary consciously crafted to nurture both guests and the priceless habitat it inhabits.

THE FUTURE OF LUXURY HOSPITALITY

With demand surging for authentic, transformative travel experiences, Luxury Frontiers is poised to continue leading sustainable hospitality design. As CEO Luca Franco emphasises, “over a decade in the making, this is just the beginning.” The firm now comprises over 60 designers, architects, project managers and strategic advisors propelling innovation across projects worldwide.

At the helm, Graeme Labe will continue driving design innovation as Managing Partner and Chief Design Officer. His creative leadership and commitment to biophilia earned Luxury Frontiers accolades like the Hospitality Design Award and Architectural Digest Hotel Design Award. The firm plans expanded operations across India, the Middle East and North America to meet soaring demand.

Summarising Luxury Frontiers’ future direction, Labe concludes “In an ever-evolving industry, Luxury Frontiers remains committed to pushing boundaries and bringing innovative, impactful hospitality offerings to the market. We are committed to shaping the future of our industry for the better and bringing more of ‘the real’ to luxury travel.”

Uncovering the value of your ART TREASURES

THE ART WORLD CAN SOMETIMES FEEL COMPLETELY DAUNTING, WITH ITS COMPLEX TERMINOLOGY, INDECIPHERABLE “ARTSPEAK,” AND SENSATIONAL HEADLINES ABOUT PAINTINGS FETCHING MILLIONS OF RANDS AND DOLLARS.

For collectors in South Africa who have assembled a cherished collection or inherited a family heirloom, the question of valuing these prized possessions can be particularly overwhelming. How does one determine the value of one’s artworks and ensure they are adequately insured or sold at the best possible price?

Wilhelm van Rensburg, Senior Art Specialist at Strauss & Co, Africa’s leading auction house, illuminates, “Some collectors approach us for an accurate appraisal of their art collection for insurance purposes. Others seek to achieve the best possible price by selling their items at auction. And occasionally, individuals are simply curious about the origins and value of an artwork,

even if they have no intention of ever parting with it.” Strauss & Co offers free and confidential valuations of artworks and decorative art objects, in person or online, with no obligation to consign for sale.

With a team of specialists who are experts in their respective fields, Strauss & Co also taps into a vast network of conservators, academics, and technical experts both locally and internationally. This collaborative approach enables them to accurately assess the value of an item and uncover its provenance. Provenance is hugely important as it establishes the chain of ownership back to its creation date. It considers for whom the piece was commissioned, and whether it has featured in any important art exhibitions. Art validators use provenance to establish the authenticity and value of an artwork.

Choosing the right auction house to

appraise works provides owners with peace of mind, knowing that they will receive a market-related assessment of their art collection’s value. By placing works on auction with well-considered estimates, the likelihood of a successful sale is increased.

Van Rensburg highlights the various valuation methods available at Strauss & Co, “Some of our clients prefer the convenience of a digital valuation that can be completed through our website, while others enjoy the personal contact of a face-to-face interaction with one of our specialists.”

WAYS TO HAVE YOUR ARTWORKS VALUED:

Submit your art online: Visit the Strauss & Co website at www.straussart. co.za and fill out the online valuation form. Upload clear images of the artwork and submit the form.

Send an email: Send an email to jhb@ straussart.co.za or ct@straussart.co.za, including measurements and images of the item for a valuation. A Strauss & Co specialist will respond to your request. Book an in-person appointment: If you prefer a personal consultation, you can schedule an appointment with one of Strauss & Co's specialists at their offices in Johannesburg or Cape Town. Attend a valuation day: Strauss & Co regularly hosts valuation days throughout South Africa. Bring your artwork or collectible item, and a Strauss & Co specialist will provide an auction estimate.

When submitting your artwork for digital valuation, take clear, focused photographs with your phone or camera from all angles. Include images of the

signature, if visible, as well as any numbers or labels on the artwork. It is also important to include photographs of the back of the artwork.

Any information you can provide about your artwork will assist in assigning a value. Provide as much information as possible, including when and how you obtained it. Do you still possess the purchase receipt or invoice? Has the artwork appeared in a newspaper article or a book about the artist? Do you have any information about its exhibition history? Upload any relevant documentation or bring it with you when attending an appointment with an art specialist or when you attend a valuation day.

By taking advantage of the Strauss & Co team's expertise, you can navigate the often-intimidating art world with confidence and ensure your treasured possessions receive the recognition and value they deserve.

A Timeless icon of FRENCH ART DE VIVRE

VISIONARY ARTIST AND DESIGNER HANS HOPFER CRAFTED SEVERAL SOFAS OVER THE YEARS THAT HAVE BECOME ICONIC SHOWPIECES WITHIN THE ESTEEMED ROCHE BOBOIS COLLECTIONS. THE MAH JONG IS PERHAPS THE MOST ICONIC.

In the 1970s, his pioneering and ingenious approach to comfort had a remarkable influence on the way discerning patrons curated and arranged their living spaces.

In 1971, Hopfer envisioned the Mah Jong – a modular sofa that champions absolute freedom of form and function. The possibilities are endless: play with dimensions and redefine the original intent to completely reorganise your space and liberate your creative flair. The three core Mah Jong components can be stacked, aligned or grouped – whatever best suits your vision. The combination of seat cushions, straight back rests and corner elements is perfect for modifying heights and sculpting your preferred composition: corner sofa, straight sofa, lounge chair or day bed. This flexibility echoes the spirit and vitality of the era from which it emerged.

In 2021, Roche Bobois commemorated the 50 year milestone of the Mah Jong sofa. To mark the occasion, the Mah Jong was dressed in new designer fabrics and placed upon refined platforms that

augment its silhouette and enhance its comfort. This new iteration makes the piece more contemporary than ever. An avant-garde creation at its inception, this ultra-modular sofa remains an iconic collectible today.

The Mah Jong cushions are meticulously handcrafted in Italy, within an atelier utilising techniques akin to the prestigious haute couture fashion tradition. Each constituent is individually hand-stitched, with scrupulous attention to detail. This artisanal craftsmanship perfectly showcases the exquisite designer fabrics adorning the Mah Jong.

The Mah Jong has also been graced with exceptional fabric collections from iconic visionaries across the spheres of fashion and design, namely Kenzo Takada, Missoni Home and Jean Paul Gaultier. Each collection reflects the creative hallmarks and unmatched mastery of texture, colour and pattern that have defined these legendary houses over the years.

When such visionary perspectives meet with the stellar creative prowess of Roche Bobois, the result is a series of highly personalised interpretations that pay homage to the enduring allure of the Mah Jong sofa. These collaborative collections poetically interweave the worlds of fashion and design to create something entirely novel yet timelessly sophisticated.

Visit the Roche Bobois showrooms in Johannesburg, Cape Town or Mauritius or use their digital tools to create your own Mah Jong living space. Visit rochebobois.com for more information.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, AFRICA! EMERGING FROM THE DUSTY STREETS OF THE FREE STATE, A DYNAMIC AFRICAN FASHION EMPIRE IS DESTINED TO DAZZLE ACROSS CONTINENTS.

At the helm reigns designer extraordinaire Palesa Mokubung, with her wildly successful label Mantsho, the first African brand to partner with global fashion magnate H&M.

Bursting on the scene in 2004 with her signature bold prints and silhouettes, Mokubung has steadily built the Mantsho kingdom, celebrating the diverse beauty of the modern African woman. Meaning "a beautiful black woman", Mantsho encapsulates Mokubung's mission to craft contemporary designs fusing European tailored fits with vibrant African textiles and accessories.

Mokubung hit the global radar in 2018 when Mantsho became the first African brand to land an H&M designer collaboration. Suddenly Mantsho's unique blend of European lines

with African aesthetics arrived in flagship H&M stores and e-shops worldwide, a glowing signal of the brand's burgeoning international success.

Since the ground-breaking H&M launch, Mantsho has continued winning accolades and cementing influence in South African fashion and culture. Mokubung's regal designs have graced celebrities across the continent, selected as the feature label for events like the Sun Met and dressing former Miss South Africa Zozibini Tunzi. True Love magazine fittingly crowned her “the African trend dictator” in 2019.

Central to Mantsho's sophisticated aesthetic are Mokubung's signature textile prints erupting with vibrant motifs inspired by everything from her favourite song from her childhood to inspiration gleaned from travelling abroad.

Mokubung has expanded her creative reign, venturing into interiors to launch the Mantsho Lifestyle brand in 2022. Ever the artist, Mokubung returns full circle to her first love of homewares, translating her signature textiles into furniture and accessories. In a recent collaboration with Hertex, she developed a range of custom interior fabrics that fuse traditional with contemporary, from dazzling takes on jazz

culture in Soweto to abstract floral prints with South African blooms.

While the world slowly recovers from the Covid-19 pandemic, this African fashion trailblazer continues to adapt and introduce new collaborations. Mokubung partnered with acclaimed South African gin distillery Inverroche for a dazzling product launch and appeared as a key note speaker at Forbes Women Africa Leading Women Summit in 2023. She has also moved to educate and empower the next generation of African

designers through mentorships and motivational speaking.

Indeed, the forecast for this African style icon remains bright. Having built an internationally-acclaimed fashion house over nearly two decades, Mokubung shows no signs of slowing her fierce momentum.

With stunning collections, pivotal global partnerships and a growing lifestyle empire, she continues to reign as a true star, bringing African inspiration to the world stage. The empress of African fashion is only just getting started.

WHEN IT COMES TO SPARKLING WINES, CHAMPAGNE FROM FRANCE AND CAP CLASSIQUE FROM SOUTH AFRICA STAND OUT FOR THEIR QUALITY AND UNIQUE CHARACTERISTICS.

BOTH REGIONS EMPLOY THE TRADITIONAL MÉTHODE CHAMPENOISE, WHICH INVOLVES SECONDARY FERMENTATION IN THE BOTTLE, CREATING THE DELIGHTFUL BUBBLES THAT SPARKLING WINE ENTHUSIASTS ADORE.

CHAMPAGNE FROM FRANCE

Champagne, hailing from the eponymous region in northern France, is the gold standard for sparkling wine. Its strict appellation rules and unique chalky soils contribute to its distinctive character.

The Grandes Marques are the pillars of champagne – established houses renowned for their consistency and quality. There are 24 houses that make up the list of Grandes Marques. We have included the four that are, arguably, the most widely known in South Africa.

MOËT & CHANDON

Founded in 1743, Moët & Chandon is one of the oldest and most renowned Champagne houses. The house is known for its consistent style and large-scale production, making it a staple at celebrations worldwide. The most popular nonvintage champagne from Moët & Chandon is the Brut Impérial. This cuvée is known for its balanced blend of 3040% Pinot Noir, 30-40% Pinot Meunier, and 2030% Chardonnay. It features a delightful combination of baked bread yeastiness and subtle citrus notes, making it a favourite for many champagne lovers.

TAITTINGER

Founded in 1734, Taittinger is recognised for its emphasis on Chardonnay grapes, which contribute to the house’s signature style characterised by finesse and floral notes. Taittinger Brut Reserve is crafted from a blend of 40% Chardonnay and 60% Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, sourced from the finest vineyards in Champagne. With a minimum ageing period of three years, it showcases a brilliant golden hue and a fine stream of bubbles. Taittinger is also noted for its beautiful chalk cellars, which are classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

VEUVE CLICQUOT

Established in 1772, Veuve Clicquot is celebrated for its innovative spirit and commitment to quality. The house gained fame under the leadership of Madame Clicquot, who was one of the first female business leaders in the champagne industry. Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label Brut has been the symbol of the house since 1772. Known for its richer, more structured profile with hints of toasted nuts and pastry, the wine strikes a perfect balance between power and finesse. Its complexity comes from the predominant presence of Pinot Noir and Reserve Wines, showcasing the house’s superb vineyards and consistent style. As Betrand de Mun, former managing director said in 1947, “Our yellow, so brilliant, so luminous, so bright, reflects the sun which is concentrated in the content of the bottle”.

Known for its richer, more structured profile with hints of toasted nuts and pastry, the wine strikes a perfect balance between power and finesse.

BOLLINGER

Bollinger, established in 1829, is known for its robust and full-bodied champagnes, often made with a higher proportion of Pinot Noir. The house’s flagship cuvée, Special Cuvée, is a blend of 60% Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay, and 15% Pinot Meunier, resulting in a rich and complex flavour profile. It is particularly noted for its briny mineral aroma and sharp effervescence, making it a standout choice among nonvintage champagnes. Bollinger is also famous for its association with James Bond, having been featured prominently in several films.

In recent decades, a new wave of luxury champagne houses has emerged. They challenge the traditional Grandes Marques with fresh approaches and contemporary styling. These newer luxury champagnes often bring fresh perspectives to production methods while maintaining the high standards expected at this price point.

ARMAND DE BRIGNAC

Popularly known as “Ace of Spades”, Armand de Brignac launched in 2006, and has quickly established itself as a symbol of modern luxury. Produced by the Cattier family, their flagship Brut Gold comes in distinctive metallic bottles. The house has garnered attention for its bold presentation and rich, powerful style that appeals to contemporary tastes.

LECLERC BRIANT

While founded in 1872, Leclerc Briant has reinvented itself since its new owners took over in 2012. Their innovative “Abyss” cuvée, aged underwater off the Brittany coast (with the barnacles on the bottle to prove it) represented a radical departure from traditional champagne ageing. The house’s fully biodynamic approach and experimental techniques have earned critical acclaim.

AR LENOBLE

Though established in 1920, AR Lenoble has recently emerged as a pioneer in addressing climate change through innovative reserve wine programmes. Their “Mag” series, launched in 2016, uses magnum-aged reserve wines to maintain freshness despite warmer vintages. Their intense, complex styles have attracted considerable attention from champagne enthusiasts.

Grower champagnes are most often produced by smaller houses. They cultivate their own grapes and craft wines that reflect the specific terroir-driven characteristics of their vineyards.

JACQUES SELOSSE

Jacques Selosse is based in Avize, where winemaker Anselme Selosse pioneered a distinctive oxidative style using extended barrel ageing and single-vineyard bottlings. Their biodynamically-farmed wines, particularly the “Substance” and “Initial” cuvées, have achieved cult status among wine collectors and helped establish a new paradigm for artisanal champagne production.

EGLY-OURIET

Domaine Egly-Ouriet Champagne is another coveted cult wine, celebrated for its powerful, refined Pinot Noir-based characteristics. This small family grower produces concentrated, complex wines of exceptional quality. When Francis Egly took over from his father Michael in the 1980s, he revolutionised their approach. His distinctive methods include harvesting fully ripened grapes and extended barrel ageing. The result: sumptuous, age-worthy champagnes that represent the finest expression of Pinot Noir-based sparkling wines.

PIERRE PETERS

This respected grower-producer based in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger in the Côte des Blancs, specialises in Blanc de Blancs champagnes. Founded in 1919, the estate manages 20 hectares of primarily Grand Cru vineyards. Under sixthgeneration winemaker Rodolphe Peters, they produce precise, mineral-driven champagnes, with their “L’Esprit” and “Cuvée de Réserve” being particularly notable.

Francis Egly's distinctive methods include harvesting fully ripened grapes and extended barrel ageing. The result: sumptuous, age-worthy champagnes that represent the finest expression of Pinot Noir-based sparkling wines.

Vintage champagnes are the best of the best. Like all champagnes, vintage champagne is also a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier – but all harvested in just one year. Only declared in exceptional years and aged for longer periods, vintage champagnes often show greater complexity and depth. The best vintage bottles are prized for their investment potential, stemming mainly from scarcity and meticulous winemaking practices. We discuss some of the most popular vintage champagnes below.

DOM PÉRIGNON

Created by Moët & Chandon, Dom Pérignon represents the art of vintage champagne-making, released only in exceptional years. Named after the legendary monk who contributed significantly to champagne production methods, each vintage expresses a unique balance of maturity, complexity, and vibrancy. The house primarily sources grapes from Grand Cru vineyards, blending Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with precision. Each vintage requires at least eight years of ageing before release, developing the signature Dom Pérignon characteristics of silky texture and layered complexity.

SALON

Salon epitomizes exclusivity in champagne production, crafting only one wine: a blanc de blancs from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger’s grand cru Chardonnay grapes. Founded by Eugène-Aimé Salon in 1905, this house has released just 42 vintages in its history, producing wines only in years deemed perfect. Salon ages its champagne for a minimum of ten years before release, creating wines of extraordinary precision, depth, and ageing potential. The house’s uncompromising standards and limited production make it one of the most sought-after and collectible champagnes in the world.

LOUIS ROEDERER CRISTAL

Cristal stands as a testament to historical prestige, originally created in 1876 for Tsar Alexander II in a distinctive clear crystal bottle. Made exclusively from old-vine grapes grown in Roederer’s finest vineyards, Cristal combines Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from chalky soils in Montagne de Reims and Côte des Blancs. The wine is known for its remarkable purity, precise minerality, and elegant structure. Since 2012, all Cristal vineyards have been farmed biodynamically, further elevating its quality and expression of terroir.

CAP CLASSIQUE FROM SOUTH AFRICA

South Africa’s Méthode Cap Classique (MCC), represents the nation’s answer to champagne, crafted using the same traditional method but expressing the unique terroir of the Cape winelands.

The primary growing regions for cap classique include Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Robertson, and Elgin. These cooler climate areas provide ideal conditions for maintaining crucial acidity in the base wines.

The traditional grape varieties used are Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, though some producers incorporate the local favourite, Pinotage. The wines must be aged on lees for a minimum of 12 months, with premium examples often seeing 36-60 months of maturation.

The category emerged in 1992 when the term “Cap Classique” was officially adopted, though the first South African sparkling wine made in the traditional method was Simonsig’s Kaapse Vonkel, released in 1971. Today, the industry has grown to over 200 producers. We explore five of the leading producers.

GRAHAM BECK

PONGRÁCZ

Pongrácz honours its namesake, the visionary Hungarian refugee Desiderius Pongrácz, by producing wines that blend innovation with classical methodology. Based in the heart of Stellenbosch, their wines reflect a distinctive combination of old world elegance and new world fruit expression. The estate’s signature style emerges through extended lees ageing, creating complex wines with fine, persistent bubbles and remarkable depth. Their prestige cuvée “Desiderius” consistently ranks amongst South Africa’s most celebrated sparkling wines, showcasing the potential of cap classique to compete with the world’s finest bubbles.

Graham Beck stands as a towering figure in South African cap classique, having carved out its reputation since 1983 in the limestone-rich soils of Robertson. Under the expert guidance of cellarmaster Pieter “Bubbles” Ferreira, the estate has become synonymous with premium sparkling wine production. Their meticulous approach includes hand-harvesting in the cool early morning hours and gentle whole-bunch pressing to maintain delicate aromatics. The flagship “Cuvée Clive,” produced only in exceptional vintages, represents the pinnacle of their craft, whilst their presence at significant historical moments - including Nelson Mandela’s inauguration - has cemented their iconic status.

LE LUDE

Le Lude, nestled in the picturesque Franschhoek Valley, represents the cutting edge of cap classique innovation. The Barrow family has pioneered the Agrafe method in South Africa, where second fermentation occurs under cork rather than crown cap, leading to subtle textural differences in the final wine. Their state-of-the-art gravity-flow cellar enables minimal intervention in the winemaking process, while their single-vineyard offerings demonstrate the estate’s commitment to expressing specific terroirs. The combination of technical precision and artisanal craftsmanship has established Le Lude as a benchmark producer in just a few years.

COLMANT

Colmant embodies the focused specialist approach to cap classique production. Founded by Belgian Jean-Philippe Colmant, this boutique producer in Franschhoek dedicates itself exclusively to sparkling wine, refusing to dilute its expertise across still wines. Their philosophy centres on extended lees ageing - well beyond the category’s minimum requirements - and careful grape selection from both Franschhoek and Robertson valleys. The result is a range of wines characterised by pristine fruit expression, elegant mousse, and remarkable consistency. Their Blanc de Blancs, in particular, showcases the potential of Chardonnay in the Cape’s terroir, combining citrus brightness with sophisticated brioche notes from extended ageing.

While champagne remains the benchmark, cap classique provides a compelling alternative, showcasing South Africa’s winemaking prowess

SPIER

Spier, one of Stellenbosch’s oldest wine estates dating back to 1692, has made significant strides in the cap classique category with their exemplary Prestige Cuvée Cap Classique. The Prestige Cuvée 2016 represents the pinnacle of Spier’s sparkling wine craftmanship: a refined blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Elgin’s cool climate vineyards, where Atlantic breezes and high-altitude conditions create ideal growing conditions for sparkling wine grapes. The wine spent no less than 84 months maturing on the lees, resulting in remarkable finesse – golden-hued with precise bubbles and offering layers of Golden Delicious apple, citrus and freshly baked brioche notes.

Both champagne and cap classique offer exceptional sparkling wines, each with its own unique character and charm. While champagne remains the benchmark, cap classique provides a compelling alternative, showcasing South Africa’s winemaking prowess. Whether you prefer the classic elegance of a French champagne or the vibrant fruit of a South African cap classique, there’s a world of bubbles to explore and enjoy. The best choice ultimately depends on your personal preference and the occasion.

Celebrating ARTISTRY

GRAHAM BECK PARTNERS WITH ESTEEMED CERAMICIST MICHAEL CHANDLER AND TWO EMERGING TALENTS IN A FUSION OF ARTISTIC BRILLIANCE AND TIMELESS CRAFTSMANSHIP.

ape Town’s vibrant art and design scene brings together creative talents both established and aspiring.

Luxury wine producer Graham Beck is highlighting this energetic crosspollination of influences through an inspirational collaboration with ceramicist Michael Chandler and emerging artists Elise Wessels and Glorinah Khutso.

At the heart of this partnership is Chandler’s exquisite handcrafted Celebration Platter, capturing the rolling vineyards and rich heritage of the Graham Beck estate in Robertson.

Reminiscent of old Delft ceramics, the blue and white porcelain artwork encapsulates a shared commitment to artisanal mastery.

As the founder of beloved gallery Chandler House, Michael has long nurtured local artists, providing a showcase for South Africa’s proud cultural traditions. Extending this supportive ethos, Graham Beck’s collaboration incorporates a mentorship programme allowing Michael to impart his expertise in clay techniques to two burgeoning talents.

Surface designer Elise Wessels of botanical homeware studio Blackfan demonstrates her delicate floral motifs on a series of Michael’s slab-rolled vases. Meanwhile, Renaissance Design founder

Glorinah Khutso’s vibrant patterns grace a collection of porcelain tiles, symbolising the passing of knowledge between generations.

This creative synergy resonates with Cellar Master Pierre de Klerk’s dedication to continuous refinement at Graham Beck. It also reflects the brand’s commitment to championing talented visionaries across artistic disciplines.

Just as Graham Beck’s award-winning Méthode Cap Classique wines are crafted with patience and passion, so too does Michael Chandler’s work represent the transformative power of creative purpose. By supporting knowledge-sharing and the perpetual evolution of skills, this exceptional collaboration is truly a celebration of enduring mastery.

we dine AT DUSK

ON A BALMY EVENING IN STELLENBOSCH, WE ARRIVE AT AN UNASSUMING DOOR ABOVE WHICH A SIGN READS SIMPLY: DUSK. LITTLE DID WE KNOW THAT WE WERE STANDING ON THE BRINK OF A CULINARY ODYSSEY.

We are welcomed into the intimate space by co-owner Darren Badenhorst, his easy smile and passion evident as he speaks of the journey that brought Dusk to life two years ago. “We wanted to create something bold, something that pushed boundaries,” he says, and we feel that creative energy pulsing through the restaurant.

We are shown to our seats, two of only thirty in the restaurant, each table illuminated by pendant lights that create islands of intimacy. Callan Austin, co-owner and executive chef of Dusk, stops by our table. “The menu is really all about storytelling,” he says. “We use the dishes to start conversations.”

To add a little intrigue to our evening, we have chosen the “Pandora’s Box” experience. We are ushered into the walk-in cellar to hand-select a mystery box, not knowing what bespoke wines from Dusk’s collection we have selected to accompany our meal.

As if tapping into our love of the unknown, our evening begins with a playful choice of “pills”. We are told that whichever we choose will have an influence on a dish later in the evening. The edible discs dissolve on our tongues, each bursting with concentrated flavour. This sparks a conversation about the movie The Matrix and how seemingly innocuous choices in our lives can have profound effects later on.

Next arrives the Japanese milk bread, pillowy and sweet, glazed in honeyfermented garlic and served with coalinfused butter that has us sopping up every last morsel. When our venison tart is unveiled from beneath a cloche filled with fragrant smoke, we gasp in delight.

As we sip on another fine wine from the Cape Winelands, and look again at the simple yet elegant menu card, we find clues printed alongside each dish as to the hours of work invested - 384 hours for the wagyu Caesar salad, we read. It sparks discussion around the mastery involved in crafting such an experience. Tallying up the hours across the 11-course menu highlights both my poor arithmetic skills and the sheer determination the team at Dusk must possess.

The palate cleanser is cheeky and playful and has me reminiscing about holidays on my grandparents’ farm, while my companion shares a story about that day a teacher in school took discipline a bit further than is allowed today.

Between artful courses like linefish in a pool of salmon bone beurre blanc, and an oyster dish crowned with African caviar, Austin guides us through Dusk’s vast fermentation library, nurtured for almost a decade to unlock complex depths of flavour. We begin to comprehend that this is no overnight endeavour.

As the last dessert spoon slides clean, a sense of warm contentment settles over us.

It is clear the Dusk team’s commitment extends beyond the plate. Badenhorst speaks passionately of driving inclusivity in the industry to empower his brigade. And in Austin, we recognise a chef putting South Africa on the global gastronomic map. Together they speak of sustainability, zero-waste, supporting local suppliers, and of how foraging is good for mental health.

Dusk is undoubtedly a fine-dining destination. Yet as we step back into the night, it feels as if it is so much more than that. This team has started a conversation that we cannot wait to see unfold.

And what of our pill choices? At which point did our choices affect our meal? That is a mystery I will leave for you to discover for yourself.

a taste of CAPE GRACE

WORDS: EMMA JORDAN

COCKTAILS

BASCULE BAR,

GRACE’S DINING DESTINATIONS CELEBRATE SOUTH AFRICAN FLAVOURS THROUGH CONTEMPORARY INTERPRETATIONS OF FOOD AND DRINK TRADITIONS.

There is something deliciously warm and nourishing about getting bread in a basket. And not just any basket, but a Mia Melange woven basket with a lid that reveals a beautifully crafted sourdough, warm and tasty, made only minutes before finding a home on the table.

Such is the setting for dinner at Heirloom — originally positioned as a fine dining destination at the newly revamped Cape Grace hotel — what is now is an homage to South Africa’s unique culinary heritage, all made with care by executive chef Asher Abromovitch.

Ingredients are sourced daily and intersects of fine dining and global trends with local familiarities come through in dishes such as Kudu Tartare with African bird’s eye chilli and amagwinya, filet with moer koffie and klippies sauce and mussels with pickled spekboom raita.

The setting is beautiful. Inlaid marquetry is present on all tables, and screens are modernised and localised with rattan, and South African contemporary artwork.

This commitment to South African creativity, in an elegant, modern setting continues downstairs in the Bascule bar. For many years a favourite with South Africans in the know, this bar now effortlessly blends a global flavour with local flair.

This is not only evident in the extraordinary art on the walls — a mix of Banele Khoza, Imraan Christian and Thalia Ramkilawan, but also in the cocktails that include old favourites like a fantastic ‘old fashioned’ and newer skews on classics: an amber martini made with Inverroche Amber gin and orange marmalade, or a 5th Generation that is kumquat-infused Hendricks Gin, Caperitif, and elderflower tonic.

This mix of familiar and global, new and heritage ensures that the Cape Grace sits as an elegant, yet surprisingly modern, old lady in a unique position between the water and the mountain. One of Cape Town’s icons, naturally welcoming and effortlessly luxurious.

Indulge in the future of skincare with

FUTUREME

WE KNOW ABOUT LUXURY. WE UNDERSTAND INDULGENCE AND WE UNDERSTAND SKINCARE. OR SO WE THOUGHT. HELEN DE COSTER SHARES HER EXPERIENCE WITH FUTUREME™.

Everything about FutureMe is different. From the outset, when Supriya Mody and her team decided to launch her luxury skincare brand in South Africa first, I knew it would be something special.

As someone who has sampled countless skincare lines, I am exceptionally selective and rarely impressed by the latest so-called “breakthroughs” in anti-ageing. But when the new luxury brand FutureMe invited me for a sneak peek at their products, I was intrigued. Created by the ambitious entrepreneur Supriya Mody, FutureMe aims to push the boundaries of skincare efficacy with high-tech formulas that delight the senses. After testing, I am pleased to report this new player lives up to its promises.

Born into a pharmaceutical empire yet forging her own path in skincare innovation, Supriya Mody envisioned a brand where luxury meets measurable results. She insists FutureMe will “dream limitless” by providing both indulgent, spa-like textures and fast-acting formulas to visibly transform skin.

FutureMe will “dream limitless” by providing both indulgent, spa-like textures and fast-acting formulas to visibly transform skin.

Centered around an exclusive formula complex called “FutureBlend™”, the products feature a blend of botanicals, vitamins and clinically-proven ingredients from around the globe. “More of the same,” you may think. Think again. Supriya recognised that even the most ground-breaking formulas are of little benefit if the ingredients cannot be delivered deep into the skin.

Teaming up with Dr Renuka Thergoankar, a world-renowned, highlyawarded cosmetic chemist, they worked tirelessly to find a way to ensure that the meticulously sourced ingredients penetrated deeply enough to be able to deliver their transformative power where it would have the greatest effect.

They eventually landed on sound therapy, more specifically a particular frequency that Supriya calls “BeautyFrequency™”. This technology employs soundwaves during production to amplify absorption and multiply the potency of FutureBlend at a cellular level.

I was impressed not only by the sublime textures but also by how quickly the formulas delivered noticeable tightening, brightness and renewed firmness. After one use, my skin looked fresher; after a week, my complexion was markedly more youthful. I credit this magic to FutureBlend, expertly crafted under Supriya’s direction to optimise agedefying actives.

And the slogan reveals so much about the brand ethos. “Wings to Your Dreams” captures Supriya’s belief that we should set no limits on our aspirations. She wants women to feel empowered by beauty routines that make them look and feel their best and believes that the experience should be so luxurious that it serves as a daily affirmation that anything is possible.

The inaugural collection called “Arayani” references a goddess of eternal youth and embodies the bold femininity of the range. I love how small yet flexible the range is. Instead of needing a guidebook to keep track of which products to use when, Supriya encourages experimentation. “Find what works for you and makes you feel good,” she says.

THE TEXTURE TREATS

I quickly became enamoured with The Moisturizing Cream, a rich yet featherlight balm bursting with hydrators like hyaluronic acid and plant ceramides. The formula proves FutureBlend can deliver both lavish moisture and skintransforming benefits like improving firmness. After each application, my complexion looked refreshed, supple and lit from within.

If you prefer lightweight textures, The Hydrating Gel Cream offers a refreshing, bouncy alternative ideal for

oilier skin types. It contains the same powerhouse blend of FutureBlend and hydrators but delivers a cooling sensation that tones as it quenches thirsty skin. These industrious formulas also smooth the look of fine lines with collagen supporting spheres.

For an added dose of radiance, I have taken to mixing in The Nourishing Face Oil at night. This elixir contains FutureBlend alongside nutrients to support your skin’s elasticity. Massaging in this silken, golden-hued oil leaves skin supple and dewy by morning. My fine lines looked softened within days.

THE SKINCARE OF THE FUTURE

In our high stress, high pollution world, protecting skin extends beyond basic creams. That is why I am impressed by how The Regenerating Serum shields from urban grime while flooding skin with antioxidants and proteins to revive a fatigued complexion. This product proves skincare should multitask: moisturise, protect and repair all in one fastpenetrating treatment. Since the eyes show the first overt

signs of ageing, it is essential not to neglect this delicate zone. Reach for the cooling Eye Luminance Gel to reawaken this area. The whisper-light serum immediately makes eyes look less tired while the skin-conditioning FutureBlend reduces crepey texture over time. I keep it in the fridge for an extra soothing sensation.

FutureMe has clearly invested in elegant packaging to match the precious formulas within. Weighty glass bottles and jars feel like treasures in your palm and lend to the spa-like experience. But the beauty runs deeper than the surface to deliver genuinely cutting edge skincare.

After just weeks with my new FutureMe regimen, my skin looks markedly smoother, firmer and illuminated with youth. The products feel like a luxury and perform like advanced treatments. I am pleased to discover a new brand that makes good on its promises of revolutionary skincare. Indulge in FutureMe and discover your own skin’s full potential. This is surely the future of anti-ageing.

A Century at the Pinnacle of Penmanship MEISTERSTÜCK:

IN AN ERA DOMINATED BY DIGITAL COMMUNICATION— WHERE EMAILS, INSTANT MESSAGES, AND EMOJIS HAVE USURPED THE ART OF ELEGANT PROSE—THE HUMBLE PEN MIGHT SEEM LIKE AN ANACHRONISM. YET, IN THE WORLD OF MONTBLANC, THE WRITING INSTRUMENT IS ALIVE AND THRIVING. NAMED AFTER THE HIGHEST PEAK IN THE ALPS, MONTBLANC HAS BEEN AT THE SUMMIT OF REFINEMENT AND CRAFTSMANSHIP SINCE ITS FOUNDING IN 1906.

Montblanc’s heritage is synonymous with innovation, precision, and timeless design. Over the decades, the brand has earned a prestigious reputation, appealing to a glittering roster of luminaries. From Queen Elizabeth II to Presidents Kennedy, Clinton, and Obama, and literary icons such as Ernest Hemingway, Montblanc pens have graced the hands of history-makers. These pens have been used to pen love letters, sign peace treaties, and document life’s most monumental decisions.

Central to Montblanc’s legacy is the Meisterstück, a writing instrument that debuted in 1924 and has since become a cultural icon. With its sleek, cigar-shaped design and hallmark three gold rings, the Meisterstück is instantly recognisable. Capped with the brand’s six-pointed emblem—symbolising the snowy summit of Mont Blanc—it is a pen that transcends utility, becoming a symbol of achievement and success.

The Meisterstück has achieved the kind of cultural relevance that few objects enjoy. Like a Hermès Birkin or a Rolex Submariner, it is known universally by its singular name.

Interestingly, the Meisterstück was not initially created for public sale. In its early days, Montblanc craftsmen would produce their own “masterpiece” as a showcase of the skills they acquired from apprenticeships abroad. These pens were personal treasures, not commercial products. But in 1924, Montblanc made the inspired decision to offer the Meisterstück to the public. The result was an overwhelming success, with the pen quickly becoming a must-have item for those seeking the ultimate “Sunday best” writing instrument.

While the Meisterstück’s original design remains iconic, it has not remained static. In 1952, Montblanc introduced a larger, more substantial version of the pen. This oversized iteration, with its satisfying heft and bold presence, is the model most closely associated with the Meisterstück today.

The centennial Origin Collection includes a special nib engraved with the numbers “100” and the years “1924” and “2024,” celebrating the Meisterstück’s enduring legacy.

The centennial anniversary of the Meisterstück was commemorated with a short film written and directed by award-winning director and screenwriter Wes Anderson. The film re-introduced Montblanc to the world in Wes Anderson’s signature style with its distinctive visual aesthetic and blend of eccentric, unconventional storytelling. The story follows three colourful characters - actors Rupert Friend, Jason Schwartzman, and Wes Anderson himself - at the fictional Montblanc Headquarters located at the peak of the Mont Blanc mountain, as they introduce the Maison, its story, and debate the qualities of its most recognised creation, the Meisterstück fountain pen. At the end of the film, the audience gets a glimpse of a new design, one keenly anticipated by lovers of the brand. “The Schreiberling” (meaning “The Scribbler”), designed by Wes Anderson, carries his whimsical and nostalgic aesthetic, and features playful details that are both classic and unconventional. It is expected to become available during 2025.

The Meisterstück has also become a canvas for storytelling, a medium through which Montblanc explores cultural and literary themes. Collaborations with contemporary designers have brought fresh perspectives to the Meisterstück, while tributes to literary giants such as Edgar Allan Poe and Robert Louis Stevenson keep its legacy firmly rooted in the world of writing.

One of the brand’s most recent innovations is the Montblanc Great Characters Homage To The Great Gatsby collection. This is a tribute not to a historical figure, but to the enigmatic protagonist of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s literary

masterpiece. First published in 1925, a year after Montblanc introduced its iconic Meisterstück, The Great Gatsby captures the decadence and upheaval of the Roaring Twenties through Jay Gatsby’s pursuit of idealism and the American dream. This collection of writing instruments reflects Gatsby’s lavish lifestyle and obsession with perfection through fine craftsmanship and thoughtful design. Each of the five editions features unique elements inspired by Gatsby’s world, from caps engraved with his initials and money clip-inspired clips, to cones modelled after hip flask caps—a nod to Prohibition-era bootlegging. The nibs pay homage to key symbols from the novel, including Gatsby’s yellow car, Art Deco motifs, and the green light that represents both love and ambition, blending literary elegance with Montblanc’s timeless sophistication.

For those who value the act of writing as an art, the Meisterstück offers an unparalleled experience. Its weight in the hand, the smooth glide of its nib across paper, and the permanence of its ink combine to create a sense of timeless elegance. It is more than a pen; it is a statement, a reflection of the writer’s aspirations and achievements, and we look forward to seeing what Montblanc has in store in the next century.

“NEVER STAND STILL”

THIS GUIDING ETHOS HAS POWERED GERMAN LUXURY WATCHMAKER A. LANGE & SÖHNE TO CREATE INDUSTRY-LEADING TIMEPIECES FOR THE PAST THREE DECADES SINCE ITS POST-REUNIFICATION RELAUNCH.

Towards the end of last year, the manufacture marked 30 years of its iconic LANGE 1 watch with four limited-edition models that continue its tradition of boundary-pushing watchmaking.

“When we debuted the LANGE 1, we broke existing design rules with its asymmetrical layout. This innovative spirit drives our ambition to never stand still and push what’s possible in fine watchmaking,” said Wilhelm Schmid, CEO.

The new platinum and pink gold editions introduce elegant black onyx and blue silver dials, but their significance goes deeper. “They represent our enduring passion to unite technical excellence with aesthetic mastery,” explained Anthony de Haas, Director of Product Development.

The LANGE 1 broke the mold by revealing its mechanics on full display: Offcentre displays on the front, and a sapphire caseback exposing the hand-decorated movement.

30 YEARS OF WATCHMAKING FIRSTS

This desire to do things differently has spawned an entire LANGE 1 watch family since 1994. Each generation introduced groundbreaking innovations that redefined watchmaking.

The TOURBILLON PERPETUAL CALENDAR combined a perpetual calendar with a peripheral month ring – a first for mechanical watches. The TIME ZONE simultaneously indicates two time zones, inspired by Dresden’s history as a rail travel hub.

Most recently, the Triple Split set precedents as the first rattrapante chronograph with split-seconds capability for hours, minutes and seconds. It headlines A. Lange & Söhne’s growing repertoire of 73 manufacture calibres designed and assembled in-house.

CELEBRATING A LEGACY, CONTINUING A VISION

On the occasion of the LANGE 1’s 30th birthday, the special platinum and pink gold editions encapsulate what makes this watch so extraordinary.

At 38.5mm wide (36.8mm for the LITTLE LANGE 1), the cases retain sharp lugs and slender bezels, with new black onyx and blue silver dials. Inside ticks the selfwinding L121.1 manufacture movement with 72 hours of reserve. Limited to 300 pieces of each colourway for the LANGE 1 and 150 pieces of each colourway for the LITTLE LANGE 1, these watches are set to be valuable investment pieces.

Most importantly, these anniversary editions carry the enduring spirit of innovation set by the original LANGE 1 thirty years ago. It is a spirit that actively resists stillness, evidenced in 2019’s avant-garde ODYSSEUS sports watch — the first Lange crafted in stainless steel.

As pioneers in high watchmaking, where will A. Lange & Söhne’s “never stand still” philosophy lead in another 30 years?

Time is Part of the Essence

AT DOCK HOUSE

AS YOU STROLL ALONG THE HISTORIC VICTORIA & ALFRED WATERFRONT IN CAPE TOWN, YOUR GAZE WILL FALL UPON A FAMILIAR LANDMARK: THE TIME BALL TOWER. WHAT YOU MAY NOT SEE, DISCREETLY TUCKED INTO A WALLED GARDEN RIGHT NEXT TO THE TOWER, IS THE CHARMING DOCK HOUSE BOUTIQUE HOTEL AND SPA, WHOSE ELEGANT EXTERIOR HINTS AT THE LUXURIES THAT AWAIT WITHIN.

As we step inside, it becomes clear this is no ordinary hotel but rather a jewel lovingly polished to transport

discerning guests back to Cape Town’s glamorous Victorian era.

We are greeted by polite and attentive staff, who usher us into a simple yet chic foyer with a narrow, carpeted staircase leading up to the right and period detailing that evokes the hotel’s 19th century origins.

As we explore further, we note how the décor expertly combines antique touches like ornate mantlepieces, pressed ceilings and wood floors with contemporary accents. The effect is one of understated Victorian grace meeting modern sophistication.

As the hotel manager explains, the property was originally built in 1860 as the Harbour Master’s home, set overlooking the bustling new Alfred Basin. Little remains from the original house except the home’s distinctive architectural style, befitting the prominence of its first occupant. Yet this rich history permeates the hotel, from the original thick rock foundations to the slate sea wall encircling the property.

We are told the vision was to retain the building’s heritage while transforming it into Cape Town’s most exclusive boutique hotel. To achieve this, famed designer Francois du Plessis blended antique and reproduction furnishings with state-of-the-art amenities. His aim, we learn, was to create an atmosphere that felt simultaneously nostalgic, glamorous and soothingly homely.

As we are guided through the hotel, it becomes clear Du Plessis has succeeded masterfully in realising his vision. In the library, vintage touches like an intricate fireplace, statement lamps and whimsical objets d’art capture the Victorian spirit while abstract artworks, designer furniture and glittering accessories anchor the space firmly in the present.

Upstairs, the plush bedrooms are equally alluring. We admire the way custom fabrics, ornate mirrors and freestanding baths evoke a genteel era while amenities like integrated TVs, lavish toiletries and sumptuous beds wrapped in fine cotton sheets pamper modern sensibilities.

We relax into our chairs, soaking up the views and luxuriating in the Dock House’s expertly cultivated blend of old-world nostalgia and contemporary decadence.

The interplay between past and present continues as we explore the rest of the property. In the elegant Morning Room, umbrellas in stands hint at British high-society while abstract artworks on the walls, designer furniture and an opulent breakfast buffet affirm the hotel’s contemporary sophistication. Outdoors, manicured lawns and clipped hedges that wouldn’t look out of place on a country estate offset the poolside daybeds and glamorous bar reminiscent of an ultra-chic resort.

This juxtaposition reaches its apex in the west-facing Vista Room. Floorto-ceiling windows perfectly frame the hotel’s pièce de résistance: Table Mountain rising majestically behind the striking 1894 Time Ball Tower. Imagining gentlemen docking their pocket watches to the tower’s daily

1pm time signal across the shimmering harbour waters, we feel momentarily transported back to Cape Town’s age of steamships and sailor’s chronometers. Yet the present comes flooding back as a charming waiter delivers champagne to our balcony, accompanied by a tantalising tray of canapés. We relax into our chairs, soaking up the views and luxuriating in the Dock House’s expertly cultivated blend of old-world nostalgia and contemporary decadence. It proves a beguiling mix.

As our stay unfolds, we discover the Sanctuary Spa and the gym, both undeniably modern, with cutting edge amenities. The hotel’s fabulous setting within Cape Town’s premier V&A Waterfront district proves a boon. When we wish to explore, a universe

of boutiques, galleries, restaurants and bars awaits right outside our chic urban oasis. But just as appealing is retreating back to the Dock House, where flickering lanterns illuminate the manicured gardens by night. Mingling with fellow guests at the intimate bar, we watch the gentle flicker of yacht masts across the harbour as the Time Ball tower is artfully lit up behind. It makes an alluring scene, wonderfully encapsulating this hotel’s magical fusion of past romance and present-day sophistication. As our stay concludes we find ourselves smitten by the Dock House’s enduring charms. Like the fine antiquities and luxury collectibles found within its walls, this fabulous boutique hotel is clearly one-of-a-kind; a true masterpiece only improved by the passage of time.

A Sanctuary of Serenity:

ESCAPE TO FUTURE FOUND

NESTLED IN THE FOOTHILLS OF CAPE TOWN'S ICONIC TABLE MOUNTAIN LIES

FUTURE FOUND SANCTUARY – AN LUXURIOUS WELLNESS RETREAT DEDICATED

TO THE ART OF MINDFUL LIVING AND CAPE TOWN’S FIRST AND ONLY 5-STAR LUXURY REGENERATIVE TRAVEL HOTEL.

Ancient oak trees lined the road, sunlight filtering through the canopy in ethereal beams. And then suddenly, the retractable gate gave way to reveal one of the most stunning properties I've ever laid eyes on – and it felt as if we were entering a dreamscape.

Three striking villas and two Forest Pods nestle effortlessly in the estate’s

sprawling grounds – 5.4 acres of indigenous gardens, fruit orchards and healing spaces interwoven with meandering pathways. The setting elicits an immediate sense of wonder and tranquillity.

We were soon greeted by the warm staff with freshly pressed juice and cool towels, as though we were old friends returning home. As we were escorted to our private suites, I was captivated by Villa Noir’s breathtaking design aesthetic - an inspired fusion of modern elegance and elemental rawness. Luxurious furnishings share space with stunning

pieces of African art, organic shapes subtly evoking the simplicity of an African kraal. Floor-to-ceiling windows invite the outdoors in from every vantage point, blurring the line between internal and external. One can’t help but feel viscerally connected to the landscape here.

My lavish abode exceeded every expectation. Crisp linens, a deep-soaking tub, and blackout curtains promised sound slumber, while the sun-drenched private garden provided an idyllic spot for my morning meditation practice. Luxurious amenities infused with local botanicals gave way to thoughtful touches like ceramic vases filled with fresh-cut blooms from the estate’s gardens. The hotel's devotion to locallysourced, sustainable design was evident in every unique detail.

Of course, Future Found Sanctuary is far more than a place to rest one’s head

in peerless comfort. This magnificent refuge has been meticulously crafted for guests to wholly disconnect from the mania of modern life and realign with nature’s healing rhythms. Deeply personalised wellness journeys guide guests to rise, realign, reflect and rest. These regenerative experiences are woven like golden threads throughout your stay. From morning tea in your room, through treatments at the Sensorium Spa to the the meals you enjoy throughout the day, there are signature scents and textures for each experience.

Dining at Future Found was an artful celebration of ethical, seasonal fare. Many ingredients are foraged from the grounds while others are sourced locally. Each impeccably plated dish sang with vibrant flavours and colours from the Cape’s rich terroir. Wine pairings showcased regional varietals,

effortlessly complementing the delectable farm-to-table cuisine. While undeniably decadent, the nutritious meals left me feeling nourished rather than overindulged.

When not steeping in spa treatments or grazing on culinary delights, we delighted in activities tailored to awaken the senses and reconnect us to the present moment and to nature. Why not enjoy an early-morning yoga flow in the estate’s serene Five Elements Garden? Guided gently through movements in harmony with nature, you will feel profoundly centred and at peace. Try Thai Chi or partake in a Rasul mud ritual. Perhaps breathwork is something you have always wanted to do. The breathwork instructor will guide you through rhythmic breathing exercises that will leave you feeling euphoric and deeply relaxed. Guests can also try forest bathing in natural spring water or sound healing. Acupuncture, kinesiology, workouts in the gym, guided hikes around the grounds and a consultation with a biokineticist are also on offer.

What makes Future Found Sanctuary truly exceptional, however, is the warm community cultivated during one’s stay. The caring staff exude genuine passion for the property and remember every guest by name. Meals become opportunities for heartfelt connections over shared interests and laughter. The hotel attracts an intriguing mix of wellheeled travellers and holistic healers alike, all with enlightening perspectives to share.

At dusk, with Table Mountain’s imposing silhouette transforming from granite grey to rippling gold in the fading light, an overwhelming sense of gratitude washed over me and sentimental tears sprang to my eyes unbidden. In this serene refuge, I located a profound stillness I did not know I had been missing. The outside world and its constant stimuli fade away, inviting selfdiscovery and vitality. Here time slows, the soul speaks, and one remembers how to simply be. Future Found Sanctuary gifts its visitors the ultimate luxury –calm.

For those seeking a wholly transformative escape where luxury, sustainability and holistic wellbeing entwine in perfect harmony, look no further than this remarkable retreat. I am deeply grateful for my stay at this lifeaffirming sanctuary I now warmly regard as a home away from home, and eagerly await the bliss of returning.

When not steeping in spa treatments or grazing on culinary delights, we delighted in activities tailored to awaken the senses and reconnect us to the present moment and to nature.

Upon arrival, the property's high walls and iron gates give little indication of the enchanting world within. The first surprise greets visitors immediately – an impressive collection of ornamental pigs scattered throughout the reception area. These charming creatures are the passion project of owner Karine Dequeker, whose personal touch sets the tone for this unique establishment.

Cape Town designer Etienne Hanekom has created an ambiance that perfectly balances sophistication with theatrical flair. His vision manifests in light-filled spaces adorned with striking ceiling art and unexpected design elements. The Moooi Pig Table, true to the size of an actual pig, stands as a playful greeting in the lobby, while each space reveals carefully curated details that earned Majeka House the prestigious Condé Nast Johansens Best Design Hotel award in 2017.

The 23 rooms offer distinct personalities, each crafted with meticulous attention to detail. With Premier, Mountain View, Garden and Poolside rooms on offer, guests are spoilt for choice. The Poolside Rooms provide an elevated experience with private decks and exclusive pools shared between just two rooms. Nature-themed wall coverings and flooring create a seamless connection with the surrounding landscape, while modern amenities ensure complete comfort.

Each room comes equipped with large comfortable beds, satellite TV and premium coffee-making facilities including an espresso machine – perfect for early morning wake-ups or afternoon pick-me-ups. The thoughtful inclusion of safes, pool bags, and beach towels demonstrates attention to guests' practical needs.

The bathrooms deserve special mention, most featuring huge classic bathtubs alongside double walk-in showers. In some rooms, a clever sliding screen system offers flexible privacy between bedroom and bathroom spaces. The hotel's commitment to quality extends to its choice of premium bath amenities by South African Malee Natural Science, provided in full-size bottles rather than typical hotel miniatures.

Outside, the property's grounds unfold as a sophisticated retreat. Lush gardens surround a heated swimming pool perfect for laps, while cobalt blue sun loungers dot the terrace. The spa area features an indoor hydrotherapy pool and hot tub, offering a peaceful sanctuary for relaxation.

Majeka Kitchen utilises only the freshest seasonal ingredients for its light lunches and impressive breakfast spread. In addition to à la carte options, an expansive buffet of smoothies, cheeses, breads, fruits and more provides fuel for vineyard adventures. In the evening, step

out to dine at one of the many fine dining restaurants in Stellenbosch or order a snack platter for in-room dining.

The Majeka Lounge provides a sophisticated setting for evening unwinding, with plush leather seating and an extensive selection of local wines and creative cocktails. It is the perfect spot to reflect on a day spent exploring nearby vineyards or simply soaking in the South African sunshine.

What truly sets Majeka House apart is its ability to surprise and delight. The pig collection, which began as the owner's personal passion, has evolved into a cherished feature that returning guests contribute to, creating an ever-growing family of piggy personalities in every conceivable medium. These whimsical touches, combined with five-star luxury, create an atmosphere that's both sophisticated and playful.

The property has become particularly popular among those seeking an alternative to the traditional wine estate accommodations in Stellenbosch. Its

location, just ten minutes from some of the region's finest wineries, makes it an ideal base for exploring the Cape Winelands while enjoying a more intimate, personality-driven setting.

For those fortunate enough to discover this hidden gem, Majeka House offers more than just a place to stay – it provides an experience that captures the essence of modern South African hospitality.

In a region known for its natural beauty and world-class wines, Majeka House stands out not just for its luxury credentials, but for its character. The property demonstrates that five-star accommodation need not be stuffy or predictable. Instead, it can be a place where high-end comfort meets personal charm, where design meets whimsy, and where every stay becomes a memorable story. Visit

A SECLUDED

in the eastern cape

HAVE YOU FOUND THAT PLACE? THE PLACE YOU CAN ESCAPE TO? THE PLACE WHERE YOU CAN RELAX, RECHARGE, RESET?

A SANCTUARY

s I step onto the private beach at sunrise, hot coffee in hand and toes sinking into pristine sand, I realise I’ve found something extraordinary. Sandcastle Luxury Villa, perched magnificently above this stretch of untouched Eastern Cape coastline, has captured my heart in ways I never expected.

The journey here was seamless—a brief flight to East London followed by a scenic 45-minute drive. As we approached the villa, its distinctive rust-coloured spires emerged from the landscape like something from a dream, at once both striking and perfectly harmonious with its surroundings. The structure, I would learn, was crafted using sand from the very beach I now stood upon, inspired by Malian granaries.

The first morning sets the tone for what becomes a few days of unparalleled luxury. Chefs Anna and Zintle have arranged breakfast on the beach—a spread of scrumptious delicacies served right there amongst the dunes. The villa manager assures me this is a regular occurrence here, where the Indian Ocean provides a constant backdrop to daily life.

The villa itself is an architectural marvel, designed by David Mealin in 1999. Its organic forms remind me of coral clusters, with curved walls and distinctive turrets housing everything from an impressive wine cellar to an intimate reading nook. My ocean-facing suite— one of four—offers views that make it difficult to leave each morning, though the promise of our chefs’ culinary creations invariably lures me out.

On a rare overcast day, when the famous Sunshine Coast briefly belies its name, I find myself drawn to one of the two lounges. A roaring fire crackles in the hearth, and I sink into a plush armchair with a book from the library, occasionally glancing up to watch storm clouds roll across the ocean. The villa manager appears silently with a pot of Ethiopian coffee and home-baked pastries, anticipating my needs before I can voice them.

The 275-hectare conservancy surrounding Sandcastle proves to be a constant source of wonder. Fuzile, our dedicated field guide, leads us on morning walks through ancient coastal forest, pointing out rare birds and sharing his expertise on the local honey project he manages. The pride in his voice is evident as he explains how the villa’s conservation efforts have helped increase Oyster Catcher breeding by 50%.

Cara Levinsohn, Operations Lead, says, “Sandcastle is a special place, that we believe has a magical energy that is hard to explain and is better felt. With conservation and preservation at the forefront of everything we do, it is a celebration of Africanicity as well as a desire to highlight how fabulous this lesser explored coastline is.”

Days flow effortlessly here. Mornings might begin with yoga in the central hacienda-style courtyard, on the lawn beside the pool or even on the beach, followed by a dip in one of the two

swimming pools. Afternoons are spent exploring the private two-kilometre stretch of beach, paddle skiing on the river, or simply watching for whales, giraffes or other wildlife from the villa’s numerous vantage points. As evening approaches, sundowners are served on the patio, each drink crafted to perfection and accompanied by Chef Anna or Chef Zintle’s innovative canapés. The interiors deserve special mention—a carefully curated collection of South African art adorns the walls, while traditional designs and natural materials create a space that feels both luxurious and authentically rooted in its location. Earth tones and textural elements mirror the surrounding landscape, creating a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces. What strikes me most about Sandcastle is its ability to offer adventure and absolute tranquillity in equal measure. One day, I might find myself dune boarding or surfing; the next, enjoying a massage as the sound of waves drifts through open windows.

The villa staff—all from the local Wesley community—strike that perfect balance between attentiveness and discretion.

Something a little quirky about this erstwhile family holiday home is that every bathroom – including a deep soaking tub, shower and loo – also boasts a view, from within and from outside. We soon get into the habit of giving an “eyes front” warning to our travel companions if they happen to be within viewing distance before we take a shower.

As our stay draws to a close, I find myself already planning our return. There’s something magical about this place where bush meets beach, where luxury meets wilderness, and where every detail has been considered without feeling contrived. Sandcastle isn’t just a villa— it’s an award-winning sanctuary that reminds us of nature’s profound beauty and our responsibility to preserve it.

BAREFOOT BLISS

at thonga beach lodge

IF YOU HAVE EVER WONDERED WHAT THE TERM ‘BAREFOOT LUXURY’ MEANS, A VISIT TO THE AWARD-WINNING THONGA BEACH LODGE IS ALL THE CLARIFICATION YOU NEED.

The welcome board as you enter the property proclaims that Thonga Beach Lodge is “a civilised distance from civilisation”. Another notice, posted in the bar, reads “No News. No Shoes”. Yet another, notifies guests

that if they’re wearing shoes, they are overdressed. These quirky signs empitomise the kind of break you can expect when visiting this remote retreat. Set in the dune forest alongside the pristine (and seemingly endless) Mabibi Beach, in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a World Heritage Site, Thonga Beach Lodge is not easy to get to, but getting there is part of the adventure. Whether

you fly into Richards Bay or Durban, drive to Sodwana Bay and catch the 1-hour 4x4 transfer to the lodge, drive all the way in a 4x4, or fly with a private charter to the nearby 800m airstrip and catch a 30-minute transfer from there, Thonga is worth the effort, because its very remoteness is what makes it so magical. And yet, despite being so far away from the world, every comfort has been

considered and each of the 12 rondavelstyle rooms is a sanctuary. With some rooms looking out over the ocean and some gently tucked into the coastal forest, every room is positioned for enjoyment of the natural surroundings while affording maximum privacy. The Deluxe Rooms also boast a private deck with a plunge pool.

Whether you choose to spend your

time doing as little or as much as possible, Thonga has options aplenty. Switching off comes with the territory. WiFi is patchy and only available in some public areas. There is no cellular signal to speak of. And the “no news” reference mentioned earlier? Well, if there was a TV at Thonga I certainly did not see it.

For those who choose to do as little as possible, there is a hammock under the

trees, a lounger beside the pool or on the beach deck, or a massage bed at the spa waiting for you. Grab a good book, order a cocktail and relax.

And for those who choose to enjoy the great outdoors, there is hardly a better place on earth to do so. From sunrise kayaking on nearby Lake Sibaya, South

Africa’s largest freshwater lake, with excellent bird-watching as an added bonus, to snorkelling brilliant coral reefs, scuba diving, open sea boat rides in search of dolphins, whales and turtles, guided forest walks, fishing, long walks, runs or bike rides along the pristine beach or a swim in the always-warm

Indian Ocean, Thonga has it all. In this protected area, the chance of spotting hippo, crocodile and other wildlife is pretty good too. For those lucky enough to be at Thonga in the turtle hatching season, turtle tracking is also an option. At the end of a long day of communing with nature, or with your soul, enjoy sundowners around the firepit before you sit down to a scrumptious meal at the indoor dining room. Group Executive Chef Carl Moller is focused on sustainability and ethical eating, so ingredients are carefully sourced. From fresh produce grown by the local community to GMO-free stone-ground flour from the foothills of the Drakensberg and fresh fish from the East Coast, every meal is a celebration of freshness and a feast of traditional favourites with a modern twist. Breakfasts and lazy lunches under the trees, cocktails at the beach bar and afternoon tea in the lounge are equally delicious. For a more intimate setting, ask to have your meal on the beach deck. If the heat of the day gets to be too much, the ice cream cart offers a delightful reprieve. Be sure not to miss sundowners at Lake Sibaya.

At the beach bar, I discovered a new favourite cocktail. Ask about the blue bags, then do your bit for the environment and enjoy your reward.

Thonga Beach Lodge is simply magical, made more so by the natural treasures so abundant in this far-flung part of KwaZulu-Natal. The one natural treasure I have yet to mention is the people, whose warm, friendly, genuinely caring hospitality make every interaction a charming encounter. The staff is knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The majority hail from the local community and guests can go on a guided cultural excursion to visit a local homestead, school and clinic to experience the Tsonga way of life. The community benefits from the lodge in dozens of ways through the Isibindi Foundation, which believes in conservation through partnering with communities. Guests who share a passion for conservation should ask about their philosophy of philanthropic travel.

As we reluctantly bade goodbye to new friends, each with a thoughtful “padkos” parcel in hand, we vowed to return for a romantic getaway, a family vacation or just to get away from the world.

MIST & MAGIC

Victoria Falls Safari Club’s Perfect Blend

DREAMING OF A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT AFRICAN ESCAPE? WE HAVE DISCOVERED A GEM THAT COMBINES LUXURY, ADVENTURE AND RELAXATION IN ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST SPECTACULAR SETTINGS. WELCOME TO VICTORIA FALLS SAFARI CLUB AND SPA, WHERE AFRICAN WILDERNESS MEETS WORLD-CLASS COMFORT.

Let us start with location - and what a location it is! Perched on a natural plateau overlooking Zambezi National Park, the Safari Club (part of the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge complex) is just a hop from Victoria Falls itself. Getting here is a breeze, with regular flights from both Johannesburg and Cape Town landing at Victoria Falls’ modern airport. And trust us - once you have witnessed the Falls’ mighty cascade tumbling 108 metres into the gorge below, creating that famous rainbowstreaked mist, you will understand why it is called one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

We fell head over heels for our Club Room (there are also four Club Suites). Picture this: your own private balcony overlooking untamed African bush, stylish décor that would not look out of place in a design magazine, and the kind of bed you will never want to leave. The bathroom? Pure luxury, with a freestanding tub perfect for soaking away safari dust.

Here is where it gets really specialthe personalised butler service. Forget stuffy formality; these lovely people make everything happen with a warm smile and seemingly effortless efficiency. Want to book a sunset cruise? Done. Fancy a private dinner under the stars? They will sort it. They have mastered that perfect balance of being there when you need them while leaving you to enjoy your privacy.

The food? Oh my word! The restaurant serves up some seriously impressive dishes, but it is the little extras that made us feel thoroughly spoilt - afternoon tea with fresh pastries, evening cocktails and canapés, and treats available throughout the day.

Do not miss an outing to The Boma for dinner – it is a fantastic mix of local cuisine, drumming and dancing that will have you talking about it for years to come. While not a fine dining experience, and far too busy for an intimate meal, it is a vibrant cultural extravaganza replete with local garments, face painting and a buffet that includes local dishes like impala steaks and mopani worms. Adventure seekers, you are in for a treat. We spotted elephants, hippos and crocodiles during our sunset cruise (gin and tonic in hand, naturally). Other activities include a game drive through Zambezi National Park, and a helicopter flip over the Falls - trust us, splash out on this one, it is worth every penny. For adrenaline junkies far more adventurous than we are, rafting the mighty Zambezi River is apparently the ultimate rush. The Zambezi rapids are officially defined as Grade 5, with Grade 6 being commercially un-runnable.

Now, let us talk about our new happy place - the Victoria Falls Safari Spa. Imagine the most gorgeous safari tent you have ever seen, then add in worldclass treatments, a splash pool, a DIY reflexology pond and the occasional

warthog wandering past (adding that perfect touch of wild Africa). The treatment rooms are connected by wooden walkways through the bush, making every visit feel like a miniadventure in itself.

Whether you are having a massage with views over the wilderness, enjoying a healthy lunch by the pool, or treating yourself to a pre-safari manicure, the spa feels like a luxurious treehouse for grownups. We particularly loved how they use natural, African-inspired products - it just feels right in this setting.

What makes Victoria Falls Safari Club and Spa so special is how it all comes together - luxury that doesn’t feel stuffy, adventure that doesn’t compromise on comfort, and a spa experience that is uniquely African. It is the kind of place where you can watch elephants from your balcony in the morning, get soaked by the mist of the thundering Falls in the afternoon, and end your day with a massage and sunset cocktails.

If you are planning that once-in-alifetime African adventure or simply need a luxurious escape from the everyday, we reckon we have found your perfect spot.

Magnificence in the

MASAI MARA

THE SOUL-SEARING BEAUTY OF THE MASAI MARA BURNED THROUGH EVERY EXPECTATION I EVER HAD. FORMED THROUGH DECADES OF BOOKS, MOVIES AND DOCUMENTARIES – AND PERHAPS EVEN A PAINTING OR TWO – I HAD A PICTURE IN MY MIND’S EYE THAT WAS INSTANTLY INADEQUATE. WHAT THE MASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE IN KENYA AWOKE IN ME, LEFT ME BREATHLESS.

The familiar connection with nature that I always feel when I spend time in the bush was still there. But, like everything in the Masai Mara, I felt more expansive and more exposed. My heart was laid bare in the vast golden savanna and endless blue skies, where some of Africa’s most imposing creatures roam freely. As the sun dipped below the horizon, it hung impossibly close, igniting the sky in a fiery palette of colours more vibrant than any sunset I could recall.

A pride of lions laze in the golden light, their tawny coats gleaming against the amber grasses. Elegant giraffes browse on the highest leaves, their long necks swaying like pendulums. A herd of elephants, wise and ancient, trumpet their greetings across the grasslands.

The Mara River snakes through the landscape and the view conjures up an impression of the Great Migration - of a thundering stampede of over two million wildebeest and zebra, of tension-filled river crossings, and of the constant drama of predator-prey interactions. This is the Masai Mara - a place where the wild whispers your name, and the rhythm of Africa beats in your heart.

Another rhythm beckons as we arrive at JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge. The dust swirls around the warriors’ bare feet as they launch themselves into the air. This isn’t your average jumping competition; it’s the Adumu, a Maasai warrior dance that is as much about cultural pride as it is about athletic

prowess. This electrifying display is a blur of red shukas and colourful beads. Their chants and songs rise above the rhythmic thumps as each warrior strives to touch the sky, pushing the limits of their strength and agility. We are honoured to be invited to join the dance, amid greetings of “Jambo!”

A short walk across the hanging bridge over the River Talek brings us to the JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge and a completely different kind of beauty. Designed to promote well-being and a harmonious connection to the surroundings, the entire lodge is a study in cozy opulence. From the rich textures and warm, natural colours used throughout every space, to the consideration given to every aspect of the guest experience, the JW Marriot Masai Mara Lodge exudes an air of quiet luxury, of comfort and care.

After a delicious cocktail served beside the fire pit under the sprawling Fig Tree, we enjoyed a sumptuous meal at Sarabi Restaurant before retiring to what can only be described as our sanctuary.

The 20 tented rooms dotted along the riverbank are spacious, beautifully appointed and as close to perfect as I have ever seen. The massive mosquito-

netted custom-made bed is made more welcoming by the handwritten note left on our pillow each night and the en suite bathroom holds a treasure trove of amenities that elevate our daily routines to rituals in self-care.

Our days were filled with adventure – from magnificent game sightings to Maasai cultural experiences, from spa treatments to delectable lunches in the JW Garden, on the Fig Tree Deck and under a lone tree in the majestic reserve, from a refreshing swim in the pool to a relaxing hour in the jacuzzi on our private deck – it all went by too fast.

And yet, the JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge has devised an ingenious way to ensure that your stay with them will never be forgotten. Partnering with Canon, the Lodge offers photographic safaris, replete with excellent cameras with telephoto lenses and a professional photographer who joins the game drive and teaches you how to take better photographs. They will even help you to edit your photographs for the best possible results.

Armed with beautiful memories of loving people, cheerful greetings and the ever-present Maasai warrior to safeguard us against a chance encounter with the resident wildlife, and, of course, flash drives filled with the best wildlife photographs we have ever taken, we wished this special place, and the people that make it so, all the best. Or rather, Sahau.

welcome to NAIROBI

WHETHER VISITING FOR BUSINESS OR PLEASURE, THE CROWNE PLAZA NAIROBI AIRPORT HOTEL DELIVERS A PREMIUM EXPERIENCE THAT EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS AT EVERY TURN.

As our Fly Airlink flight descended into the shimmering heat of a Nairobi afternoon, the gleaming façade of the Crowne Plaza Nairobi Airport hotel offered a promising respite from the equatorial sun. Within minutes of clearing customs, the hotel’s efficient shuttle had whisked us away from the terminal, and we found ourselves stepping from the humid afternoon into a blissfully cool lobby that instantly dispelled any notion of a typical airport hotel.

The thermometer was nudging 30 degrees, making the rooftop Sky View Pool Bar an irresistible first stop. As I slipped into the refreshing water, watching heat waves dance across the distant city skyline, my pre-safari anticipation began to mingle with pure relaxation.

As the African sun began its descent, the rooftop transformed into one of Nairobi’s most coveted sundowner spots.

The attentive pool staff appeared with a perfectly timed frozen mango daiquiri, as fellow guests – a mix of travellers from around the globe – gathered to watch the afternoon’s Premier League match.

As the African sun began its descent, the rooftop transformed into one of Nairobi’s most coveted sundowner spots. The bartender crafted a masterful dawa (Kenya’s signature cocktail) while sharing tips about the Masai Mara, where we would be heading the next day.

My soundproofed room provided a peaceful retreat where I could organise my gear for tomorrow’s trip. Despite being a stone’s throw from one of East Africa’s busiest airports, the space enveloped me in tranquillity. The evening called for something special, and Kitchen 9 Restaurant delivered with flair. The chef’s live cooking station sizzled with local spices as he prepared succulent lamb chops, while the sommelier suggested an excellent South African Pinotage to complement the meal.

As the evening cooled, we found ourselves at the Velocity Bar’s terrace, sharing travel tales with a couple who had just returned from the Mara. Their photos of lions lounging in the golden grass only heightened our excitement for the adventure ahead. The bar hummed with energy, creating an atmosphere that was both sophisticated and warmly convivial.

Retiring early to my room, I settled in to catch up on some reading, but soon found myself watching the distant lights of aircraft through floor-to-ceiling windows. The premium bedding and blackout curtains promised the perfect night’s rest. As I drifted off to sleep, I realised the Crowne Plaza had achieved something remarkable. In a world where airport hotels often sacrifice character for convenience, this urban sanctuary delivers both – along with a generous dose of Kenyan charm that makes it the perfect overture to any safari adventure.

I knew that we would be stopping here again on our return trip, and I looked forward to a post-safari spa session, and perhaps a visit to the 24-hour gym. I would, most likely, make use of the business facilities too.

Dawn would bring another day of African adventures, but for now, this sleek hotel offered everything a traveller could desire: comfort, culture, and a tantalising taste of the hospitality that makes Kenya so special.

SANCTUARY MANDELA:

a place of reflection

I GREW UP IN THE FORMER TRANSKEI AND HAD THE HONOUR OF MEETING MADIBA TWICE, ONCE AT QUNU AND ONCE ABOARD A TRANSKEI AIRWAYS FLIGHT BETWEEN UMTATA (NOW MTHATHA) AND JOHANNESBURG. I REMEMBER FONDLY HIS ALMOST CHILD-LIKE DELIGHT AT FINDING A LADYBIRD SITTING ON HIS SHOULDER. “IT MEANS GOOD LUCK, YOU KNOW? A BLESSING,” HE SAID TO ME.

An old school friend and distant relative of Madiba’s joined me for an overnight stay at Sanctuary Mandela. Nestled in the leafy suburb of Houghton, Johannesburg, this boutique haven was once Nelson Mandela’s private residence. I knew she would appreciate the poignant nods to the iconic man and the subtle references to the land, culture, and cuisine of our childhood.

The warm “welcome home” greeting we received upon arrival set the scene for a truly reflective experience. Sanctuary Mandela is more than just a hotel; it is a destination that gracefully pays homage to a complex, revered, yet ultimately human visionary. Sanctuary Mandela stands as a testament to the man, his ideals, and the nation he helped shape, but the words of welcome also remind us that we’re standing in his home, a home that was, for him, a place of comfort and peace, of the simple joys of family and good food.

THE TOUR

The guided tour, artfully delivered by one of the gifted storytellers, elaborates on the history of the man and the building. We begin outside, next to the rose garden where Mandela would read his morning newspaper.

The façade of the house, left untouched, gives little away. He tells the story of how squatters took over the house, which was all but destroyed after decades of neglect. Photographs in the lobby show the state of the house before the back was knocked through and extended, creating a simple, light-filled space with a bar and restaurant on the ground floor and nine bedrooms arranged around a first-floor atrium.

THE ART

A palpable sense of reverence fills the air. This is amplified by the carefully curated collection of art and artefacts that adorn the walls and pop up in unexpected places. Each piece tells a story, a silent conversation with the past. A collection of 16 powerful artworks by renowned artist John Meyer portrays Mandela’s life and unwavering spirit. The art evokes a deep emotional response, more so when my friend shares personal insights gleaned from her late father.

MEETING ROOMS

The two boardrooms, built on the site of Madiba’s original study, offer more than just meeting spaces. The former occupants of these hallowed chambers often charted the course of a nation. This is where Mandela and his contemporaries made decisions that would echo through generations. The rooms retain the study’s original character, a tangible connection to the past, with framed letters of historical significance reminding us just where we find ourselves.

THE BEDROOMS

The nine bedrooms are each named after a moniker Madiba received during his 95 years of life. The largest room, “Mr President,” is where he slept during his presidency. The smallest, “466/64”, represents his inmate number when he was imprisoned on Robben Island.

INSIGHTS RESTAURANT

Insights Restaurant offers a menu that is as much a tribute to Mandela’s legacy as it is a culinary delight. Chef Xoliswa Ndoyiya, who once cooked for Mandela himself, helped shape the menu, bringing a touch of history to every plate. The emphasis is on fresh, local ingredients, transformed into dishes that are both comforting and sophisticated, a few inspired by Madiba’s favourites. It’s a celebration of South African flavours infused with the warmth and hospitality that Mandela was renowned for.

As my friend and I enjoy a delicious Sunday lunch while listening to Jazz tunes, we chat about the fact that Sanctuary Mandela is not a museum. Despite all the historic weight this special place holds, it is a place of simple luxury, quiet reflection, humour, and humility, and perhaps, with its Jazz Sundays, a place of celebration.

Visit www.sanctuarymandela.com to book a stay, an event or meeting, or a table for Jazz Sundays.

For those who want to immerse themselves further in the archives of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela’s life, times, works, and writings, the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory is within walking distance of Sanctuary Mandela.

Celebrating Life at

BABOHI M

SOMETIMES, LIFE BRINGS CHALLENGES THAT ARE ALL BUT INSURMOUNTABLE. AND SOMETIMES WE BEAT THE ODDS. WHEN THAT HAPPENS, WE HAVE CAUSE TO CELEBRATE IN STYLE. BABOHI LODGE ALLOWED US TO DO THAT.

y best friend fought a brave battle against a lifethreatening disease, and won. To celebrate her impending return to a life of relative normalcy, we spent a few days at BABOHI Lodge at QWABI Private Game Reserve, and what we discovered was far more than just another luxury safari destination.

Nestled in the heart of South Africa’s UNESCOproclaimed Waterberg Biosphere, BABOHI stands as a testament to sophisticated African luxury. From the moment we arrived, we were struck by the thoughtful fusion of earthy tones and modern finishes – warm wooden elements

perfectly complemented by contemporary copper accents and marble features that mirror the magnificent African skies above.

The lodge’s adults-only policy creates an atmosphere of tranquil sophistication that we found particularly appealing. Each of the 25 luxurious rooms and suites offers a private retreat where comfort meets elegance. We

were fortunate to experience one of the premium suites, complete with a private plunge pool – the perfect spot for afternoon contemplation while watching the wilderness unfold before us.

The culinary journey at BABOHI deserves special mention. Each meal was a celebration in itself, with exquisitely curated menus that showcase authentic South African cuisine. The

attention to detail in presentation and service elevated every dining experience to memorable heights. We particularly enjoyed the evening dinners, where the crisp African air and earthy scents created an ambiance that enhanced the spectacular dishes before us.

The lodge’s award-winning selection of Southern African wines, carefully curated by Group Sommelier

Marlvin Gwese, provided the perfect accompaniment to our meals. Pre-dinner drinks at the sophisticated bar became our nightly ritual, a chance to reflect on each day’s adventures while watching the sun paint the sky in brilliant hues.

Game drives proved to be the highlight of our stay, with twice-daily excursions revealing the magnificence of the African bush. The reserve’s rich biodiversity was evident as we encountered not only some of the Big Five but also had the privilege of spotting the critically endangered Ground Hornbill. Our expert guide’s knowledge added depth to every sighting, transforming each drive into an educational adventure.

The spa at BABOHI is a haven of tranquillity. The gentle chiming of wind bells and the aromatic signature scents created an immediate sense of calm. We indulged in several treatments in the impressive double-storey facility, each one contributing to our overall sense of wellness and rejuvenation.

What truly sets BABOHI apart is its ability to create a space where life’s victories, both minor and momentous, can be celebrated in style. Whether you’re marking a career milestone, a personal achievement, or simply the joy of overcoming life’s challenges, the lodge provides the perfect backdrop for celebration. The attentive staff seemed to anticipate our every need, making each moment feel special and worthy of commemoration.

The interactive dining experiences curated by Newmark Group Head Chef Chris Erasmus added an extra layer of excitement to our stay. From handson sessions with the hibachi grills to traditional South African braai experiences under starlit skies, each meal became a celebration of both local cuisine and our own journey.

We were particularly impressed by the lodge’s commitment to incorporating local ingredients, with the kitchen team foraging for seasonal wild berries, plums, marulas, and herbs from the surrounding landscape. This connection to the land added authenticity to every dish and deepened our appreciation for the region’s natural bounty.

The ‘Lion’ presidential suite, though we did not stay in it ourselves, is worth mentioning for those seeking the ultimate in luxury. Spanning over 150 square metres, it offers exclusive private dining and bespoke butler service on request –perfect for those extra-special celebrations. As we concluded our stay, we reflected on how BABOHI had exceeded our expectations in every way. Here, among the ancient landscapes of the Waterberg, we found not just a luxury safari lodge, but a place where life’s triumphs – both big and small – are honoured and celebrated in true African style.

What truly sets BABOHI apart is its ability to create a space where life’s victories, both minor and momentous, can be celebrated in style

YET, AS YOU STAND ATOP THIS SUMMIT OF ACHIEVEMENT, YOU MAY FIND YOURSELF CONTEMPLATING THE QUESTION, “WHAT COMES NEXT?”

The path to this pinnacle has been paved with hard work, vision, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. At this juncture, feeling a sense of disorientation is not unusual. Amidst your resplendent accomplishments, you might now face questions about reconnecting with your purpose, managing feelings of isolation, or addressing concerns about your value beyond your achievements. These reflections signify the transformative phase you are entering.

Reaching such a peak naturally brings a unique set of considerations. It is not uncommon to question the authenticity of your relationships or wonder if you are valued for who you are or merely for what you have achieved or what you can contribute. This moment of contemplation is less about grappling with problems and more about making subtle, yet impactful, adjustments.

This is where aligning your conscious and subconscious minds becomes paramount. At this stage, the journey is less about dramatic overhauls and more about fine-tuning the harmony within yourself. By aligning your conscious goals with your subconscious desires, you create a unified focus that can significantly enhance your clarity and direction.

Alignment is a practical strategy, not a mystical concept. It involves integrating your conscious aspirations with your subconscious understanding of your core values and motivations. This synchronisation reduces internal conflict, sharpens your intuition, and accelerates your progress, enabling you to make decisions with greater confidence and ease.

Imagine it as tuning a finely crafted instrument. When every component is harmonised, the performance flows effortlessly. Similarly, when your inner world is in alignment and then integrated

with your external achievements, the path ahead becomes clearer. Challenges transform into opportunities for growth, and you move with a renewed sense of purpose.

This alignment is deeply personal and unique to each individual. It involves discovering what resonates with your authentic self and making nuanced adjustments that lead to greater fulfilment. This process is not about extensive effort but rather about thoughtful recalibration.

in amg the OMG

IN 1967, A UNIQUE COMPANY WAS BORN FROM AN OVERWHELMING PASSION FOR MOTORSPORT AND TECHNOLOGY. A FOR AUFRECHT, M FOR MELCHER AND G FOR GROßASPACH – THE NAMES BEHIND THESE ICONIC THREE LETTERS STARTED THE RAPID DEVELOPMENT FROM A TWO-MAN OPERATION INTO THE GLOBAL BRAND UNDER THE MERCEDES-BENZ UMBRELLA IT IS TODAY.

MORE THAN 55 YEARS LATER, MERCEDES-AMG’S BELIEF IN COMPETITION, IDEAS, PEAK PERFORMANCE, AND SUPERIORITY STILL DRIVES THEM TO CREATE CUTTINGEDGE AUTOMOTIVE PERFORMANCE FOR THE RACETRACK - AND FOR THE ROAD.

MERCEDES-AMG S63 E PERFORMANCE

The pinnacle of the S-Class range enters an electrified new era while retaining its glorious V8 heartbeat in the form of the new Mercedes-AMG S63 E Performance. This plug-in hybrid flagship produces a scarcely believable 802hp and 1430Nm of torque from its advanced powertrain, making it the most powerful production S-Class in history.

Yet remarkably, this technical tour de force tips the scales at just 2595kg – not exactly featherweight, but far from portly considering the lavish interior and complex drivetrain technology. Sophisticated air suspension, rear-wheel steering and the surefooted grip of 4MATIC+ keep this leviathan surprisingly nimble through twisting mountain roads. The electric motor even improves weight distribution for enhanced agility. Switch to Sport+ mode and 100kph arrives in a supercar-baiting 3.3 seconds.

But raw pace is only part of the story. Switch to silent battery power alone and the hushed S63 will whisk you along for over 33km, floating through traffic effortlessly. And despite the added electrified bulk, it retains trademark S-Class comfort - rear passengers can still recline in utmost luxury as the kilometres and highway lights glide serenely by.

Yet unleash this hybrid beast on the open road and the S63 reveals a shocking turn of speed belying its stately dimensions. The signature V8 still sings with charismatic fury when provoked, but instant supplementary electric torque seamlessly fills any hint of turbo lag. Combined with four-wheel drive traction, it simply hurls itself towards each horizon with alarming ease. Hard braking scrubs off velocity rapidly too, though the regeneration can be tuned for responsive one-pedal driving.

The S63 E Performance may lack the aural theatre of AMGs past, but as an allround proposition it is peerless. Supercar speed, trademark S-Class luxury and nearsilent cruising converge masterfully in one cutting-edge technological flagship. This advanced electrification undoubtedly points towards AMG’s fiercely high-tech future.

MERCEDES-AMG GT 63 S E PERFORMANCE

Mercedes-AMG further advances its electrified future with the most powerful production model in the company’s history – the GT 63 S E Performance. This plug-in hybrid sports coupe packs a staggering 816hp, sprinting to 100kph in a scarcely believable 2.9 seconds.

At the heart of this high-tech 2+2-seater lies AMG’s new performance hybrid system, combining a 612hp 4.0-litre biturbo V8 with a 204hp electric motor integrated into the rear axle. Supported by a 6.1kWh battery, this modular setup can scale across AMG’s range to deliver supreme performance with increased efficiency.

Don’t expect substantial EV driving range though – the focus here is unbridled power delivery enabled by F1derived battery technology. Sophisticated cooling ensures the cells can withstand repeated high-power discharge cycles without overheating.

Augmented by clever 4MATIC+ torque distribution and a Drift mode for smoky sideways theatrics, this advanced hybrid drivetrain empowers the muscular coupe with otherworldly pace. Carbon brakes wrestle the momentum under total control, while subtle throttle inputs reward with graceful balance belying the 2.4-ton kerb weight.

Yet cruising refined city centres in near-silent EV mode reveals the GT 63 S E Performance’s captivating dual personality to full effect. A twist of the drive mode dial swiftly transforms this stealthy rocket into a bellowing beast, summoning unrelenting V8 thunder atop instant electric torque.

Along with the considerable price tag, owners will secure an intoxicating glimpse into AMG’s fiercely high-performance electrified future, where the risk of licence loss seems all but guaranteed.

MERCEDES-AMG G63

The Mercedes-AMG G63 stands imperiously apart from any other performance SUV, retaining hardcore body-on-frame construction and iconic brutal boxiness through over half a century of evolution. This mighty monster truck has gained transformative new dynamic talents beneath the signature squared-off silhouette.

As before, a fire-breathing 585hp biturbo V8 ensures outrageous pace belying the 2.7-ton kerb weight – hitting 100kph in 4.5 seconds never gets old. But it is the fundamental re-engineering of the suspension that revolutionises how this towering behemoth handles.

While the ladder chassis itself remains, innovative AMG Active Ride Control now debuts - essentially, adaptive air suspension with active anti-roll bars. By connecting the dampers hydraulically, the system enables a wider spread of spring rates for fluency over broken tarmac without compromising roll resistance when attacking corners.

The upshot is a quantum leap in agility belied by the visual mass. Gone is the jarring tip-toeing over every ripple and rut - the latest G glides along with unnatural calmness, gently smoothing

imperfections. The ride remains on the firm side of pliant, but no longer triggers kidney failure.

In bends, the transformation is even more shocking. Rather than lumbering onto its door handles with all the poise of an overloaded trolley, the reborn G63 handles with genuine dexterity. Quick steering, masses of front-end grip and balanced traction build confidence to push harder through sweeping curves. Ultimately physics intervenes – but the limits are far higher and more fun than ever before.

Inside, the G63 now sports Mercedes’ latest tech, including slick twin 12.3inch screens and bespoke off-road displays. The ambience nods towards luxury without compromising rugged utility – it will still shrug off dust and dirt before effortlessly arriving at the country club.

Naturally such magic doesn’t come cheap: local prices start from R4,630,600. Thirsty V8 antics achieve just 14.7 L/100km too, so running costs will more than keep pace with the fiery performance. But for a select few, owning the ultimate iteration of this automotive icon remains priceless. The AMG G63 has evolved into a true force of nature like no other.

A MUDDY MEANDER

Through the Cederberg

WHAT DO YOU GET WHEN YOU COMBINE DAYS OF INCESSANT RAIN, THE WINDING DIRT ROADS OF THE CEDERBERG AND A FLEET OF DEFENDERS TO TEST DRIVE? PURE, UNADULTERATED FUN. AND LOTS OF IT.

THE VEHICLES

Taking the latest Defender range for a spin in the Cape rains, I was impressed by how this icon has evolved while keeping its rugged character. Blasting through deep puddles on gravel backroads, the Defender handled the slippery conditions with aplomb thanks to its advanced traction control system. The permanent four-wheel drive gave me the confidence to push on where other SUVs may have struggled.

Yet the new Defender does not feel like a rough and ready workhorse, especially not the Defender 130. Inside the well-appointed cabin, I felt unexpectedly cocooned and cossetted. The seats wrap around you, keeping you in place while cornering. Despite its imposing exterior, visibility is excellent with the high driving position giving a great view out. The controls and touchscreen have a reassuring solidity

about them. More premium SUVs could learn a thing or two from the Defender when it comes to build quality.

But does it still deliver the thrills that Defenders are known for? On a tight mountain pass I was grinning from ear to ear as I threw the big Defender around the bends. The chassis feels surprisingly agile, turning in sharply while the suspension keeps everything flat and balanced. Off-road, the short overhangs and tough ladder chassis allow you to tackle even the most extreme terrain. It might look more civilised, but the latest Defender retains the soul of its forebears.

While rivals may offer more luxury and on-road comfort, few can compete with the Defender’s unflappable offroad talents and entertaining on-road manners. Despite the modern sheen, it remains the authentic go-anywhere icon it has always been. For adventure seekers, this is still the 4x4 to beat.

THE STOPS

A meander is only a meander if you have plenty of stops. And that we did. Crisscrossing the mist-shrouded Cederberg, our adventures took us to some charming places.

DURBANVILLE HILLS WINERY

Starting our Cederberg driving adventure at Durbanville Hills Winery just outside Cape Town, we fuelled up on a delicious breakfast spread. After the requisite safety briefing, we stocked up on some of the winery’s award-winning wines before setting out.

HOMEGROWN BAKERY & CAFÉCERES

This charming bakery and restaurant welcomed us with the irresistible aroma of freshly baked goods. After a quick lunch of open sourdough sandwiches with a range of hearty toppings, a quick browse for unique gifts and a driver change we were back on the road.

OPPI HOEK - CITRUSDAL

Oppi Hoek is the perfect coffee stop. They are renowned for their delectable cakes and warm, friendly atmosphere. I fell in love with one of the paintings and was more than a little tempted when I discovered they were for sale.

VELSKOENDRAAI FARM STALL & RESTAURANT - CLANWILLIAM

Velskoendraai was the venue for our first coffee stop on Day Two. You know you have discovered a gem when you can identify the perfect gift for every person back home, and one or two for yourself too. From homemade treats to handmade crafts, there is something delicious or delightful for everyone.

SKIMMELBERG BUCHU & ROOIBOS FARM – CLANWILLIAM DISTRICT

Our next stop was Skimmelberg Buchu and Rooibos Farm, for a tea tasting and guided tour. This well-established company produces and sells premium quality retail packaged organic Buchu and Rooibos tea products, locally and internationally. While the rain put paid to the tour, we took full advantage of the opportunity to buy tea and some antiageing lotions and potions at source.

DE TOL FARM DELIPIEKENIERSKLOOF N7 PASS

Located on a historic piece of land which still houses a building that acted as a supply station and pitstop to many

Criss-crossing the mist-shrouded Cederberg, our adventures took us to some charming places.

travellers since 1864, De Tol Farm Deli is one of the oldest farm stalls on the N7. We only had time for a quick lunch (which was scrumptious), but it is worth spending more time here. From wine and rooibos tastings to nougat and gin pairings, De Tol Farm Deli is a “must-do” stop in the region.

WINKELSHOEK PADSTALPIKETBERG

Our coffee stop on Day Three, Winkelshoek Padstal offers fresh local produce and a wide variety of speciality products ideal for snacking on the road.

ORMONDE PRIVATE CELLARDARLING

Situated on South Africa’s West Coast, where the rugged Darling hills roll and fall along the contours of an ancient granite intrusion, Ormonde Wine Estate was the last stop on our tour of the Cederberg. While we could not indulge in the wine tasting with lunch, we took advantage of the opportunity to

purchase wines that are exclusively available from the estate and select restaurants.

ACCOMMODATION AT SIMBAVATI CEDERBERG RIDGE

After days filled with culinary and cultural delights exclusive to the region,

we bedded down in supreme comfort at Simbavati Cederberg Ridge. Its position overlooking the rugged Cederberg Wilderness Reserve and cozy farmhouse aesthetic provided the perfect base. The swimming pool seemed to overflow into the natural fynbos landscape and the views from the generous stoep were incredible. The lodge offers walking and biking trails straight from the property as well as an on-site Spa.

The rooms were a revelation. The roaring fire, the soaking tub, and the spectacular views –- from the private deck, the luxurious bed and the reading nook – provided the perfect respite from the excitement of the day.

THE STARGAZING THAT DIDN’T HAPPEN

Stargazing at Cederberg Ridge Valley was on the agenda. Evidently, the region is known for low light pollution and thus incredibly clear night skies. That is, of course, when it isn’t pouring with rain. All was not lost, however. We were treated to a fascinating presentation by Professor Peter Dunsby, a full professor of gravitation and cosmology in the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics at the University of Cape Town. He did his best to help us understand the magnitude of the Universe (which apparently is not something the human mind can really comprehend – certainly not this human mind anyway), shared some fascinating images taken of faraway galaxies and left us feeling more than a little awestruck at the wonder of it all.

Perhaps when you take your own trip through the Cederberg, adventuring in your Defender, you will have a better view of the African night sky.

MASERATI GRANCABRIO:

Drive Like the Best is Yet to Come

THE GRANCABRIO IS MASERATI’S ODE TO JOY. IT IS AN INVITATION TO LIVE LIFE TO THE FULLEST. IT IS AN EXCLUSIVELY ITALIAN INTERPRETATION OF DRIVING THROUGH LIFE WITH THE TOP DOWN. AND IN TRUE ITALIAN STYLE, THAT MEANS SHARING YOUR JOY WITH ‘LA FAMIGLIA’.

In the rarefied world of luxury convertibles, few names evoke the same passionate response as Maserati. Last year, the storied Italian marque unveiled its latest masterpiece - the new GranCabrio, a convertible that seamlessly blends timeless elegance with cuttingedge technology and breathtaking performance. What makes it so special? A lot actually.

Following in the tyre tracks of its GranTurismo sibling, the GranCabrio launches with Maserati’s formidable Nettuno engine - a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6 producing a thunderous 542 horsepower in Trofeo guise. This engineering marvel employs Formula 1-derived pre-chamber combustion technology, delivering explosive performance while maintaining remarkable efficiency.

The GranCabrio’s fabric roof, available in five sophisticated hues, can be lowered in just 14 seconds at speeds up to 50kph, transforming this elegant grand tourer into a sublime open-air experience. Thoughtful touches abound - the innovative neck warmer system keeps occupants cocooned in comfort even as temperatures drop, while an optional wind deflector ensures the cabin remains serene at speed.

Unlike many convertibles that compromise on practicality, the GranCabrio offers genuine space for four adults and their luggage. The clever folding roof mechanism minimises boot intrusion, while the cabin showcases

Maserati’s mastery of luxurious materials and cutting-edge technology.

The interior is a masterclass in contemporary Italian design, where traditional craftsmanship meets modern innovation. A sleek digital cockpit features a 12.3-inch central display and 8.8-inch comfort screen, while the iconic Maserati clock has been reimagined as a configurable digital timepiece. The Sonus faber sound system, with up to 16 speakers, provides an acoustic experience to rival the finest concert halls.

Underpinning this technological tour de force is an innovative architecture employing lightweight materials - over

65% of the structure is aluminium, while high-performance steel ensures structural rigidity. This engineering excellence translates to exceptional dynamics, with the sophisticated Vehicle Domain Control Module orchestrating every aspect of the car’s behaviour through four distinct driving modes.

The GranCabrio’s exterior design perfectly captures Maserati’s understated elegance. The long bonnet and muscular haunches speak to its sporting potential, while details like the vertical LED headlights and distinctive boomerang tail lights create an unmistakable presence. The ‘cofango’ - a single-piece bonnet and fender assembly - exemplifies the attention to detail in both engineering and aesthetics.

Available in six standard colours and 26 exclusive Fuoriserie shades, each GranCabrio can be extensively personalised. The cabin offers a wealth of premium materials and finishes, while advanced driver assistance systems ensure that neither safety nor the exhilarating driving experience are compromised.

The new GranCabrio represents more than just Maserati’s latest convertible - it is a rolling testament to the brand’s ability to evolve while maintaining its core values. It delivers the intoxicating performance expected of the Trident badge while embracing the future through innovative technology.

For those seeking the ultimate expression of Italian automotive excellence, the Maserati GranCabrio is available on pre-order in South Africa, ready to fulfil the most evocative of promises - driving pleasure without compromise, under the open sky – and the ability to share it in supreme style and comfort.

The finger on the trigger A THE LAST WORD

s we look forward to 2025, I cannot help but reflect on the year gone by. With the lockdowns of the pandemic a faint memory, unless one lost a loved one, the last year was filled with global mayhem. With the impact of climate change, two wars on the precipice of escalation, strange, inexplicable outcomes on elections in many countries threatening economic and social security globally, I sense that a “perfect storm” has been set for the year ahead.

“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”

That being said, all we can do is try to remain positive and believe in the resilience of humankind and pray that restraint and sanity will prevail at some point. In all this turmoil, though, opportunity and hope emerge.

So what does that mean for luxury? Many long-standing prestigious brands have had to revisit their principles and product placement, necessitated by the slowdown in demand in the large Asian territories. There has even been a debate around the concept of “luxury fatigue” – implying that the wonder

years of “new money” being enamoured with the allure of major premium brands are in the past. Differentiators such as sustainable and responsible production materials and processes, lower carbon footprints, and unique artisanal emphasis as opposed to mass production are now used to stimulate interest in products and experiences.

On a personal front, introspection and self-reflection have also helped me realise what matters to me personally. Most importantly, the lesson has been to stand up for what is right. In a world where most of the content on the internet and social media is fraught with misinformation and a lack of facts and verification, credibility has become a function of who shouts the loudest, who has the largest following, and who is best able to manipulate the algorithms.

In this quagmire of drama, egos, and emotional responses, shall we for a moment take a step back and consider the consequences of any leader who may be quick on the trigger? What would happen to humankind and our planet? Are there any checks and balances left to stop that button from being pressed?

Right now, I just hope South Africa is not deemed important enough to be seen as a threat and that they forget this part of the world in whatever nonsense is about to happen.

And what do we do while the storm rages on? In the words of Martin Luther King Jr, “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”
