HaLO maximises the survivability of crew by automatically illuminating all vehicle escape hatches, handles and vital escape equipment.

A

eroglow Limited is a UK based company that was founded in 2005, but that now holds a large amount of business within the US defence market. The company itself is the joining together of people from across varying professions, from industry engineers right through to medical and scientific professionals.

The aim for this brilliant company is safety and to make both land and air vehicles as safe as possible, particularly in defence situations. It associates with an assortment of both UK and US companies that includes the US Armed Forces where Aeroglow are working alongside front line troops with the HaLO system. HaLO is the Aeroglow Hatch Lighting and Orientation System that has been installed into a variety of vehicles to protect troops from the impending threat that still is the IED. HaLO is a blast, roll and water activated escape lighting system that automatically illuminates vehicles exits and hatch mechanisms during and after an IED attack or accident. By using all of these safety features HaLO maximises the survivability of the crew and troops involved. After the successful launch of HaLO is has gone on the be installed in over 1,000 vehicles for the US Armed Forces and over 2,000 to the UK Ministry Of Defence. Not only do this excellent company offer the defence sector HaLO, but they offer them HaLO Light Weight too. This system

“The design, project management and supply of specialist aviation and vehicle safety lighting devices and associated equipment for military and civil applications “

is specifically designed for aircraft as is will weigh it down by no more than 300g per exit and is designed specifically to penetrate murky waters. Along with these two features is the crash/smoke activation that can be used in line with smoke switching and accelerometer switching for automatic activation following a crash or high impact landing, meaning that the crew will be helped to escape a dark, smoke filled cabin more easily. Finally, not only is it durable but HaLO Light Weight meets the required military aviation standards included NATO STANAG 3870. Aeroglow don’t just pride themselves on the HaLO system though, they also have various other systems in place for both before and after en IED event. In order to try and avoid such an event there is the Attitude Warning System, this system can advise the vehicle driver if they are either approaching or exceeding the vehicle roll over limits, it can be used either alongside HaLO or as a stand alone system. It has been successfully trialed by the UK Army and is a US Government requirement. If, in the unfortunate event, that an IED accident or attack does happen the Aeroglow can also provide the Event Recorder system, that can again, be used either alongside HaLO or as a stand alone system. The system acts similarly to that of a ‘Black Box’ in an airliner and is derived to obtain vital data about both the humans on board and the state

of the vehicle structure. The aim of this system is to try and maintain the safety of anyone on board the vehicle, another feature that helps to do this is the ‘safe driver profiles’ and the aim to improve response times from medical and rapid response teams following any sort of incident. Again, this Aeroglow product has been trialed successfully within the UK Army but is currently having audio and video features embedded and so remains at TRL 6-7. As mentioned regarding HaLO, Aeroglow can provide tactical lighting alongside their life saving systems. They are often commissioned to both design and supply bespoke tactical lighting products for a mixture of military and commercial customers. The varying ways that Aeroglow do this includes: tactical lighting, safe route markers and IR illuminators. Even though Aerglow focuses its attention on the various systems that can be fitted to different types of vehicle, they all have one main aim and concern, and that is about the humans that the systems are attempting to aid. Aeroglow understand that in defence situations and war zones, attacks are going to disorientate the individual and even submit them to debilitating injuries. By helping to conquer some of these circumstances Aeroglow is able to maintain crew survivability following any sort of incident as well as

by improving crew confidence and demonstrating a Duty of Care to the vehicle users. HaLO and its supporting capabilities help to mitigate these risks. Aerglow aim to improve the safety and wellbeing of all crew members involved in any sort of incident, by implementing their systems into vehicles they improve the chance of crew members surviving as well as gaining the company name on the defence map across the world.
