Growing Together

PRESSMAN

ACADEMY ANNUAL REPORT

Message from Dr. Erica Rothblum

Head of School

Dear Pressman Academy community,

The 2024-2025 school year marked a historic moment for our community. It was the year in which we came together to begin building the spaces we need for the future we want to build.

This was the year our campus came alive with movement and momentum. In January, we opened new spaces on the Pilch Rooftop: the Sapir-Gruenbaum STEAM Lab, the Joe and Felicia Weber Art Studio, and the Abeles Family Playspace. These spaces have already transformed learning. In them, children design tools, sculpt clay, debate designs, and sit in circles of sunlight for t’fillah and snack. In these rooms and rooftops, creativity has become contagious.

This was the year we broke ground on the long-awaited Lee & Luis Lainer Middle School Mercaz. We watched the space transform from the Corning Transition house last September, to a plot of dirt in November, to a building taking shape. By summer’s end, the Lainer Mercaz stood ready, a home built for independence, collaboration, and pride. It has already changed what it means to be a middle school student at Pressman.

And this was the year we planned and prepared for renovations in our Elementary School. Over the summer we expanded classrooms, built staircases, and moved walls, so that we could welcome 50 new kindergarten students, provide quiet spaces for learning support, and ensure that our students get the academic, social, emotional and spiritual education they deserve.

And beyond spaces, this was the year in which we continued to invest in staff, in learning, in community and in growth. We piloted our SAFA learning program, celebrated as teachers

graduated with advanced degrees and won awards, invested in Israel education, and continued to send our eighth graders to top high schools across the city.

As we close this fiscal year, I want to express my immense gratitude: to the Pressman Academy Education Cabinet and the Temple Beth Am Board, who supported the vision with strategic oversight; to our families and donors who gave with vision and faith; to our faculty and staff who fill these rooms with purpose; and to our students, whose wonder and courage make every beam and brick worthwhile. Together, we are not just building a campus. We are building the Jewish future - one space, one student, one sacred moment at a time. Thank you for being part of it.

Warmly,

Message from Rabbi Adam Kligfeld

Senior Rabbi, Temple Beth Am

Months into the 2025-2026 school year and the Jewish year 5786, it is validating to reflect on all that was accomplished and experienced during the previous year, within Pressman Academy and the wider Temple Beth Am communal family.

How striking that in a year of continued grief, mourning and trauma for the worldwide Jewish population–with increasing and worrying antisemitism, the ongoing brutal war in Gaza, the plight of the hostages–here on La Cienega we found meaningful ways both to note and identify with those global Jewish realities and celebrate the growth and thriving of Jewish life and learning on our campus.

• We prayed for Israel and the hostages.

• And we inaugurated phase 1 of our Campus Expansion by dedicating the new Weber Art Studio and the Sapir-Gruenbaum STEAM Lab on the roof of the Ganzberg building.

• We populated Cafe Hatikvah, a central node on our campus, with images of art dedicated to, and information about, the hostages and Israel soldiers.

• And we worked with alacrity and focus over the summer so that we could open the Lainer Middle School Mercaz to begin the school year.

• We found age-appropriate ways to address rising antisemitism with all of our students, to help prepare them for the reality of the world outside of Pressman Academy.

• And we spent most of our hours instilling joy, building ruach/spirit, reveling in what it means to study Judaism, and be Jewish, even and especially during this era.

In 5785/2024-5, we showed again and again, to ourselves and to anyone who was witness, the true marvel of a Pressman education, and of the immersive TBA experience. To live here, to study here, to grow here, to learn here, to pray here, to mourn here, to celebrate here, to sing here…is to be seen, to be held, to be challenged, to be loved and to be taught to exist and thrive with a sense of wonder.

I write these words as we are about to read Parshat Lekh-Lekha on Shabbat morning. We hear God’s call to Avram reverberate in our consciousnesses centuries later: at times the Holy One stirs us from the mundane and the familiar and invites us to journey towards the extraordinary and the sublime. Geographically, towards the land of Israel. Conceptually, towards a life of meaning, a life with the Divine. I celebrate the innumerable journeys we were on, and stimulated one another to be on, during the previous year at Pressman Academy and at Temple Beth Am. I am grateful to every person who supports our sacred work. I look forward to next year, and the years beyond, as we march forward towards many promised lands.

Rabbi Adam Kligfeld Senior Rabbi of Temple Beth Am

Mission & Vision

On a MISSION

To develop minds, nurture hearts, & instill Jewish values. We root children in our CORE VALUES

To grow the humans we want to see in the world.

Building Our Future A Campus in Motion

New spaces, Same Mensches.

This year, Pressman Academy and Temple Beth Am reached two remarkable milestones in our multi-year Campus Expansion Project, and with them, the dream of a reimagined campus came vividly to life.

In January 2025, we opened the Sapir-Gruenbaum STEAM Lab, the Joe and Felicia Weber Art Studio, and the Abeles Family Playspace on the Pilch Rooftop. These light-filled spaces have transformed learning, allowing creativity to explode throughout our elementary school.

In STEAM, students design rockets, code robots, and build models of Los Angeles landmarks. In Art, they study masters like Van Gogh and Klimt and translate inspiration into their own bold creations. And on the Abeles Family Playspace, classes gather for t’fillah, snack, or simply to breathe in the sunlight, a daily reminder that community and creativity grow side by side.

“These spaces help our students think more creatively and collaborate in new ways — they’re changing how we teach and how we learn.” — Dr. Erica Rothblum, Head of School

In November, eighth grade Student Council members picked up hard hats and shovels to break ground on the Lee & Luis Lainer Middle School Mercaz — a milestone a decade in the making that symbolized our community’s faith in the Jewish future and our investment in the next generation of leaders. Over the months that followed, the building took shape before our eyes, and by summer’s end, it was ready to welcome students to a space designed for collaboration, independence, and pride.

Together, these milestones mark the first two phases of our four-part vision for a Pressman Academy campus that reflects the excellence of our program. The first part of the renovation of the Ganzberg School Building - the next step in creating classrooms that meet our growing enrollment - took place in the summer 2025, and the full Ganzberg renovation will be completed in summer 2026. And finally, construction on a new state-of-the-art Theatre will begin in 2026.

Every brick and beam on this campus is a testament to the generosity and faith of our community. We thank the donors, lay leaders, architects, and builders who have turned vision into reality, and we and invite everyone to join us as we continue to build the Jewish future, one space, and one student, at a time.

The ECC Pageant of the Preschooler

The Art of

Learning

Where Imagination and Inquiry Meet.

The Pageant of the Preschooler is always a highlight of the year, but this spring, it became something more - a vivid expression of what makes the Pressman Academy Early Childhood Center exceptional.

At the Pressman ECC, we see each child as a competent, capable, and curious learner. Growth happens through connection, experience, and inquiry, and the Pageant made that visible. What looked like color and clay was actually collaboration and problem-solving; what appeared to be whimsy was, in truth, rigorous early learning at work.

Teachers approached the Pageant as co-researchers and designers, creating installations that revealed how children make meaning of their world. Each project, from bold self-portraits to collaborative sculptures, showed the power of play-based learning and the Jewish value of b’tzelem Elohim, honoring the creative potential in every child.

Drawing from artists like Matisse, Ai Weiwei, and Murakami, classrooms reimagined space itself. A loft became a secret garden; outdoor walls became canvases. Inside and out, the exhibits reflected a core belief: that curiosity and courage are inseparable from learning.

The evening wasn’t just an art show. It was a case study in Pressman’s early childhood pedagogy: rigorous, reflective, and rooted in relationships.

The Art of Early Learning

• Learning Through Play. Every creation reflected critical thinking, risk-taking, and discovery.

• Inspired by the Masters. Students studied modern and contemporary artists, interpreting their techniques through a preschool lens.

• Teacher as Researcher. Faculty designed experiences that bridge Reggio Emilia principles and Jewish values.

• Community in Action. Families saw firsthand how play, art, and belonging shape the foundation for lifelong learning.

Leadership Transitions

Farewell to Inez Tiger, Welcome to Shira Landau

Nurturing the Hearts and Souls of our Community.

For 32 years, Inez shaped the spirit of Pressman — teaching us that wellness is the foundation of learning and community.

After 32 years of extraordinary service, Inez Tiger concluded her tenure at Pressman Academy. Since joining Pressman in 1992 as a third grade teacher, Coach Tiger shaped generations of students, parents, and educators through her wisdom, warmth, and unwavering belief in the potential of every child. Over three decades, she served as Middle School Counselor, Middle School Principal, and, for the last seven years, as Director of Wellness, a role through which she enhanced the foundation of Pressman Day School’s approach to social-emotional learning and mental health. Her legacy can be felt in every classroom where empathy, reflection, and connection are woven into daily life.

As we bid farewell to Inez with profound gratitude, we also celebrate the appointment of Pressman’s very own Shira Landau, LCSW, as Pressman’s new Director of Wellness.

Shira served as Middle School Counselor since 2014, where she designed and led Kesher classes, developed parent and student workshops, and supported teachers in meeting each child’s needs. A gifted listener and leader, Shira brings deep expertise, compassion, and a clear vision for the next chapter of Pressman’s wellness work, blending Jewish wisdom, emotional intelligence, and resilience in a complex world.

Following a comprehensive search chaired by Dr. Nina Sessler and a committee of parents, faculty, and lay leaders, Shira officially stepped into her new role on July 1st, 2025. In her own words, wellness at Pressman “is not just about self-care - it’s about empowering our students with the emotional, social, and spiritual tools they need to navigate a complex world with strength and purpose.”

Together, Inez and Shira represent the essence of Pressman leadership: educators who model kindness, curiosity, and integrity, and who remind us that our relationships and self-regulation are the foundation for healthy and holistic living.

The Legacy of Wellness at Pressman

For more than three decades, Pressman Academy has placed wellness at the center of Jewish education, teaching students not just how to learn, but how to live with empathy, resilience, and joy.

Our Wellness Program Today:

• K–8 integration: Social-emotional learning embedded across subjects

• Kesher classes: Weekly life skills lessons linking emotional growth to Jewish texts and values

• Family partnerships: Parent evenings and workshops that strengthen home–school connection

• Faculty development: Training that supports teachers in building safe, inclusive, and connected classrooms

“Wellness is relational - it’s built in the day-to-day interactions, partnerships, and moments of connection between students, teachers, and families.”

— Shira Landau, LCSW

Deepening Jewish Learning

Transforming Israel Education for a New Generation

On the Cutting Edge of Israel Education.

This was the first year that every Middle School student, in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades, engaged in a full, sequential Israel curriculum at Pressman Academy.

In a world where conversations about Israel have grown louder, harder, and more complex, Pressman Academy is leading with courage, clarity, and heart. In 2024 we reached a powerful milestone: a complete three-year Israel curriculum - the first of its kind at Pressman - designed to help students understand, question, and love Israel in all its depth and complexity.

Our students don’t just memorize history — they live inside the story. Sixth graders debate current bills in a Mock Knesset and trace the journeys of its pioneers. Seventh graders grapple with Herzl’s Uganda Plan, the dilemmas of the Altalena, and the moral choices that shaped Israel’s founding years. Eighth graders analyze contemporary Israeli art and music, explore issues of democracy and identity, and tackle the hardest questions about conflict and peace. Each class builds on the one before, weaving together history, civics, ethics, and emotional connection. The result? Students who are articulate, curious, and confident, able to talk about Israel with knowledge, nuance, and pride.

“We’re not just teaching about Israel - we’re helping our students find their own voices within the story of the Jewish people.” — Yonatan Rosner, Judaic Studies and Hebrew Principal

Pressman Pride on the Rise

Athletics Take Center Stage

Movement With Meaning.

This year, Pressman Academy’s athletics program reached new heights on the court, in the stands, and across campus. From the roar of the crowd at pep rallies to a championship win on the volleyball court, Bulldog pride was unmistakable.

Our 8th grade Girls Varsity Volleyball team captured the Jewish Day School League division title, capping off a season that showcased skill, focus, and teamwork.

We also launched a major new initiative: a co-ed 4th–6th grade League for basketball and volleyball. Introduced in winter and spring, the league opened the door for younger students to experience team sports at school for the first time, learning fundamentals, building confidence, and discovering the joy of competition in a supportive environment. The response was overwhelming, and the program will expand even further in 2025–2026, with the addition of soccer and flag football, to meet growing demand.

School spirit hit a new peak as all school pep rallies packed the Elbaz Family Foundation Gymnasium with music, chants, and blue-and-white energy. Students, families, and staff came together to celebrate what Pressman athletics represents: hard work, leadership, and community. Under the direction of Coach Moulton, the athletics program continues to grow not only in participation, but in purpose. Sports at Pressman aren’t just about the scoreboard - they’re about building resilience, confidence, and connection.

Season Highlights

• Championship Win – 8th grade Girls Varsity Volleyball captured the Jewish Day School League title.

• New League Launch – Co-ed 4th–6th grade Basketball and Volleyball league debuted, with plans for expansion in 2025–2026.

• Spirit on Display – School-wide pep rallies filled the gym with music and Bulldog pride.

• Record Participation – More students joined teams than ever before, reflecting the growing strength of Pressman Athletics.

• Values in Motion – Athletes embodied teamwork, discipline, and resilience—on and off the court.

Spotlight on Creativity

The Magic of Theatre

Students Take Center Stage.

This year, Pressman’s theatre program brought energy, skill, and collaboration to two major productions: Into the Woods (Middle School) and Alice in Wonderland (Elementary School). Middle School students managed every aspect of their show: performing, assistant directing, and running all backstage operations, including lighting, sound, hair, makeup, and publicity. Their professionalism and teamwork set a new bar for student-led production at Pressman.

That leadership carried into the Elementary School production, where Middle School students served as assistant directors and stage crew mentors. Elementary students, beginning in second grade, joined the backstage team to handle props, scene changes, and cues, gaining handson experience in every facet of live performance.

Both productions were guided by the exceptional direction of Pressman teachers Kenzie Kuhlmann, Amelia Arender, and Rachel Azair, whose creativity, high standards and guidance continue to shape the strength of Pressman’s performing arts.

Together, these productions reflect the essence of the program: creativity, discipline, and collaboration. As construction continues on Pressman’s new theatre, the program is poised to grow even further, giving students a stage worthy of their talent, teamwork, and imagination.

Achievements & Impact

Proud. Purposeful. Pressman.

This year, our students and teachers achieved at the highest levels academically, artistically, and within the broader Jewish community. Each milestone reflects the heart of a Pressman education: curiosity, courage, and connection.

Student Excellence

Our eighth graders were once again admitted to many of Los Angeles’ top high schools, including Beverly Hills, Brentwood, de Toledo, GALA, Hamilton Humanities Magnet, Harvard Westlake, Milken, New West Charter, Shalhevet, Windward, and YULA, making Pressman one of the few schools in the city that can proudly state that graduates attend both YULA and Harvard Westlake.

Growth & Community

Pressman served 506 students this year, with record interest across the ECC and Day School. Kindergarten received 65 applications and next year’s average K–5 enrollment will surpass 40 students per grade.

Faculty

Growth

Three teachers completed or are completing doctorates in education; one earned an M.A. in Early Childhood Education.

Our principals published work on Pressman’s teacher mentorship program; Yonatan Rosner was featured in the Lookstein Center Journal for Israel education innovation.

Pressman leadership visited Finland’s renowned school system, bringing back new insights to enrich our teaching practices.

Moot Beit Din: Two teams reached the semifinals; one won the regional championship.

LA County Science Fair: Three students placed; one advanced to state competition.

LA County Spelling Bee: One student placed 6th overall.

Facing History Upstander Awards: Two students honored for moral courage and leadership.

Global Seal of Biliteracy: Over 30% of 8th graders earned certification in Functional Proficiency in Hebrew.

Truman Scholars: Eight Middle Schoolers selected for this prestigious enrichment program.

Debbie Abeles, ECC teacher, received the BJE Lainer Award for excellence in early childhood education.

By the Numbers: A Year of Growth

Temple Beth Am One Community

At Temple Beth Am, the Youth Learning and Engagement (YLE) department brings Jewish life to families, from ECC through Middle School and beyond. Working in close partnership with Pressman Academy, YLE creates spaces where learning, celebration, and connection extend seamlessly from the classroom into family life.

Together, we nurture Jewish identity through hands-on experiences, joyful Shabbat gatherings, and a wide variety of programs that deepen relationships among students, parents, and friends. The same values that shape a Pressman education - curiosity, community, compassionguide YLE’s approach to building meaningful Jewish experiences for the whole family.

This year’s Temple Beth Am Family Shabbaton at Camp Ramah in Ojai captured that spirit beautifully. More than 300  people joined together for a weekend of prayer, learning, and play. As always, it was a highlight of the year filled with ruach, laughter and friendship and provided a powerful reminder of what it means to building community, together.

• 300+ participants at the annual Family Shabbaton at Camp Ramah in Ojai

• Expanded YLE programs connecting families

• Ongoing family engagement through Shabbat and holidays

• Cohort-based learning opportunities that link Jewish values to daily life

In Your Light We See Light A Gala Honoring Elyssa

Elbaz

Honoring a leader who builds more than buildings.

“In Your Light We See Light” - the theme of this year’s Gala - felt especially fitting as our community gathered to celebrate the luminous leadership of Elyssa Elbaz.

This year’s Temple Beth Am / Pressman Academy Gala took place in a setting that could not have been more symbolic. The Elbaz Family Foundation Gymnasium and Ziering Family Field are spaces that exist because of Elyssa’s vision, persistence, and heart. Under the glow of a Moroccan inspired tent and the energy of nearly 300 guests, we gathered to honor a leader whose dedication has literally helped build the walls - and the spirit - of this campus.

The evening reflected everything Elyssa embodies: purpose, warmth, and quiet strength. Whether she’s walking a construction site with a hard hat, leading a board meeting, or cheering on at a volleyball game, Elyssa’s leadership has always been defined by movement - moving ideas forward, people together, and dreams into reality.

“Elyssa’s impact can be seen in the buildings she helped raise, but it’s felt even more deeply in the warmth, optimism, and strength of the community she’s built.”

— Dr. Erica Rothblum, Head of School

The celebration helped our Annual Campaign close with over $1.1 million, a record-breaking show of generosity that will sustain the innovative programs, inspired educators, and joyful Jewish life that define Pressman Academy and Temple Beth Am.

• A True Builder: Visionary behind the Elbaz Family Foundation Gymnasium, Ziering Field, and our Middle School building.

• A Steady Hand: Guided the Education Cabinet and school leadership through years of growth and challenge, including the COVID-19 pandemic.

• A Heart for Community: Known for her humility, humor, and deep love of Jewish learning.

• A Lasting Impact: The 2024 Gala in her honor helped the Annual Campaign total over $1.1 million.

“Elyssa leads with both intellect and heart. She asks the questions that need to be asked, and she does it with grace, care, and a twinkle in her eye.”

— Rabbi Adam Kligfeld, Senior Rabbi

The Elbaz Legacy

Message from Shani Fisher

Pressman Academy Education Cabinet Chair

Dear Pressman Community,

Each year, our annual report provides community members with important facts and figures for the previous school year. More than just a snapshot of the “nuts and bolts” of the school, this report tells the story of Pressman, capturing the essence of our school and its mission: Developing Minds, Nurturing Hearts and Instilling Jewish Values. I am proud to share this year’s report, which I’m confident delivers on both fronts.

Looking back, I am struck by how the 2024-2025 school year was marked simultaneously by transformation and by steadfastness. We continued implementing significant changes to our campus – witnessing, brick by brick, the Lee & Luis Lainer Mercaz becoming a reality for our Middle School students and staff.  At the same time, we remained unwavering in providing the warm, academically-rich, proudly Jewish environment that defines Pressman. Our academic and learning support programs continued to evolve to meet a wide range of student needs, while our students — always at the center of every decision — reminded us daily of the importance, meaning, and value of a Jewish day school education, now more than ever.

As you read this report, you’ll notice threads of both pride and possibility. The data demonstrates both measurable success as well as less quantifiable achievements. The latter are equally if not more telling than what shows up in the raw numbers. The report conveys a joy of learning, an authentic embrace of Jewish identity, a genuine connection to the state of Israel, and a sense of belonging that runs through the Pressman community.

The Education Cabinet is deeply grateful to Pressman’s leadership team, faculty, staff, and all families for their continued partnership, trust, and investment.  Together, we are building not just an outstanding school, but a vibrant, loving community that shapes thoughtful, kind, creative, and critically-minded young adults.

Thank you for being part of this remarkable journey.

With appreciation,

Shani Fisher

Chair, Pressman Academy Education Cabinet ’24-‘26

VP of Education, Temple Beth Am ’24-‘26

Proud Parent, ’25 and ‘27

Together, We Build the Future

It takes vision to imagine what’s possible, and generosity to make it real. Every achievement in this report, from new spaces that inspire learning to programs that strengthen identity and connection, was made possible by your partnership.

Your giving sustains not only what we do, but why we do it: to raise thoughtful, confident, and compassionate Jewish children who carry our story forward. Each contribution - every family, every name - reflects the belief that Jewish education is an investment in our collective future. Thank you for helping us grow with purpose, with pride, and with each other.

Building for What Comes Next

This year, generosity took shape in bricks, beams, and bold ideas. Together, we opened new learning and play spaces on the Pilch rooftop, broke ground on the Lee & Luis Lainer Middle School Mercaz, and began renovation of the Ganzberg Building, each one a reflection of our community’s shared commitment to Jewish education and the future of our children.

These projects are more than buildings; they are promises that our students will have spaces to explore, create, and grow as learners and as Jews. Thank you for helping us transform our campus, and in doing so, strengthen the foundation of our community for generations to come.
