FROM THE EDITORS’ DESK Dear Readers, Want to Make Customers Happier with Automated Approvals and Faster Turnaround? EFI Fiery JobFlow offers higher level of prepress workflow automation geared to minimise your customers’ efforts while you gain greater efficiencies. This is the first in the series of articles on EFI Fiery to be published in coming issues of PRESSIdeas. Canon has expanded in digital photo album print domain in India with the introduction of DreamLabo 5000 in Kerala Market. DreamLabo 5000, a commercial inkjet printer reaches the city of Kochi at Edathadan Digital Press. Canon India also recently launched two new models – C800 and C700 under its imagePRESSC800 series. Another key development of the digital printing arena is the launch of Versant 2100 Digital Press by Xerox. Targeting the production printing industry, the new press is a 100 page-per-minute device which combines speed, Ultra HD image quality and automation features to create colourful personalized communications, collateral, brochures, photo publishing and specialty print products. And, during the “Gallus Innovation Days 2014”, Heidelberg and Gallus unveiled the future machine generation – the Gallus DCS 340 for digital label printing. The new digital inline label printing system by Gallus has been developed in cooperation with Heidelberg and Fujifilm. Pragati Offset, Hyderabad has successfully implemented Esko Equinox extended gamut – or fixed inkset – printing solution. Equinox Expanded Color Gamut (ECG) technology is Esko’s patented technology for converting packaging graphics from CMYK and spot colour to a seven-colour process. The other recent key installation by Esko has been at Essel Propack. Essel, one of the largest manufacturers of laminated tubes, has adopted Esko’s prepress and workflow software as well as Esko CDI digital flexo plate imaging for producing flexo and letterpress plates in-house. Again on the installation front, Akshar Graphics of Ahmedabad and Repro Plate Services of Chennai have chosen KODAK’s advanced KODAK FLEXCEL NX System. The fully automatic AutoPlate Pro plate changing system will soon be available for the Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 75, XL 75 Anicolor and XL 106. AutoPlate Pro achieves plate changing times around 50 percent shorter than the semi-automatic AutoPlate system, which results in faster makeready. The first results of the “drupa Global Insights” report on “The Impact of the Internet on Print – The digital flood” are now out. They illustrate how many Internet-enabled tools such as web-to-print, variable data printing, interactive print such as Augmented Reality and QR codes and smart technologies such as printed electronics, will impact on most areas of the printing industry. Find all this and much more about the latest happenings in the national and international printing, packaging and allied industries. The much awaited Labelexpo India 2014 is just around the corner. 50% shorter plate changing times with AutoPlate Pro Fully automatic AutoPlate Pro plate changing system from Heidelberg also available for Speedmaster XL 75 and Speedmaster XL 106 in future.

The world’s first Speedmaster XL 106 with AutoPlate Pro has been in operation at GmähleScheel Print-Medien GmbH in Waiblingen since April 2014.

The fully automatic AutoPlate Pro plate changing system will soon be available for the Speedmaster XL 75, XL 75 Anicolor and XL 106. Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) introduced AutoPlate Pro at drupa 2012 for the new Speedmaster CX 102, SX 102, and SX 74 models launched at this event. The system offers a costeffective alternative to the AutoPlate XL. Unlike this simultaneous plate changer, the plate cylinder of the AutoPlate Pro remains in the gear train and is not disconnected. Consequently, the printing plates are not clamped in place at exactly the same time, but in a time-optimized, staggered process. AutoPlate Pro achieves plate changing times around 50 percent shorter than the semi-automatic AutoPlate system, which results in faster makeready. More than 100 presses with over 600 AutoPlate Pro systems between them are now in operation at the print shops of satisfied customers all over the world.

autonomously - in the same way as a pile change at the feeder, for example. The system is easy to operate. A plate change for a new job is initiated via pre-programmed processes of the Intellistart process-oriented operator guidance system or directly at the Prinect Press Center. Sensors monitor the entire procedure, which ensures excellent process stability and thus high availability.

Easy to operate and enables staff to carry on working during plate changes

From this fall onward, the Speedmaster XL 75 Anicolor, which is also designed for frequent job changes, will come with AutoPlate Pro as standard. AutoPlate XL will be offered as an option. AutoPlate will still be supplied as standard with the Speedmaster XL 75, but the AutoPlate Pro and AutoPlate XL options will also be available to customers. The Speedmaster XL 106 will still come

The benefits of AutoPlate Pro are now also being made available to commercial and packaging print shops that opt for the XL 75 and XL 106 series. Thanks to its fully automatic operation, this plate changer, too, enables operators to carry on working while the machine changes the printing plates

The differences between the three plate changing systems - AutoPlate, AutoPlate Pro, and AutoPlate XL - therefore go beyond the time required for plate changes and extend to whether or not operators can perform other tasks during this period. Take the example of a Speedmaster XL 75 five-colour press. While AutoPlate requires 4 minutes and 10 seconds, AutoPlate Pro enables the five printing plates to be changed in 2 minutes and 5 seconds and AutoPlate XL in 1 minute and 42 seconds.

Key Notes : > Plate changing times some 50 percent shorter than with AutoPlate. > Easy to operate and enables staff to carry on working during plate changes. > Initial installations with Speedmaster XL 75 and Speedmaster XL 106 a big success.

Initial installations with Speedmaster XL 75 and Speedmaster XL 106 a big success Anderhub Druck-Service AG in Rotkreuz has been operating the world’s first Speedmaster XL 75-5+L with AutoPlate Pro since January 2014. The Swiss family company has 18 employees and specializes in print jobs for industrial and pharmaceutical customers. It often prints jobs in three different languages and print runs mostly range from 1,500 to

5,000 sheets. “Given the large number of short runs, a fully automatic plate changer is an absolute must for cost-efficient operation in our format. AutoPlate Pro won us over with its excellent price-performance ratio. Based on an average of 18 job changes each day, it gives us up to 1.5 hours of extra production time,” explains company owner Peter Anderhub. In addition to faster makeready thanks to AutoPlate Pro, the Speedmaster XL 75 also benefits from high availability and reduced waste. This is due in part to the Prinect Inpress Control inline color and register measuring system. And in conjunction

The world’s first Speedmaster XL 106 with AutoPlate Pro has been in operation at Gmähle-Scheel Print-Medien GmbH in Waiblingen since April 2014. Heinz Wurzel took over the Scheel print shop twelve years ago and today it forms part of the Wurzel media group, which has 270 employees spread over nine companies that cover all sectors of the printing and media industries. In the sheetfed sector alone, the headcount has increased from 30 to 85 since the takeover. The print portfolio ranges from high-end books in very short runs to flyers and high-quality annual reports. Customers include well-known companies such as Daimler, Porsche, Hans Grohe, Stihl, Betty Barclay, and Mey. The new Speedmaster XL 106-6+L with AutoPlate Pro has got off to a very good start. “The Speedmaster with AutoPlate Pro has already won us over with its excellent efficiency. It makes the company more competitive,” stresses media entrepreneur Wurzel. The machine is also equipped with the FoilStar cold foil unit and boasts a wide range of surface finishing options that extend the company’s portfolio.

The Impact of the Internet on Print – The digital flood First results of the “drupa Global Insights” report are out now.

Print service providers and the supplier industry on the one hand and their customers on the other are being compelled to deal with new challenges and opportunities. Werner M. Dornscheidt, President and CEO of Messe Düsseldorf, underlines the relevance of the drupa study: “With its detailed analysis of the global markets and the overview of current trends, the “drupa Global Insights“ report is an important contribution to strategic decisions that need to be taken by printers and suppliers alike.” In spring 2014, about 1,100 international key executives from the printing industry took part in the on-line survey and many participants provided very informative examples from their business environment.

“With its detailed analysis of the global markets and the overview of current trends, the “drupa Global Insights“ report is an important contribution to strategic decisions that need to be taken by printers and suppliers alike.” Werner M. Dornscheidt, President and CEO, Messe Düsseldorf.

Key Notes : > Changing demand for print but strong opportunities for growth remain. > Success of mass customisation of print. > Increasing adoption of interactive print in packaging.

September 2014

The rise and rise of ecommerce E-commerce is growing in most global regions at rapid rates and printers are to play catch-up, for whilst 51% of the survey panel had Web-to-Print services, only 14% reported it transacted more than 25% of their orders. Nevertheless in the catalogue market, publishers understand that print catalogues drive online sales and a majority of 60% of catalogue printers reported growth in on-demand digital production.

The shift to mass customisation Whether it is photo books, calendars, stationery, marketing articles or T-shirts, in small or large volumes – the customized large-scale production of digital print articles is catching on. Already, 72% of all questioned commercial printers worldwide offer variable data printing services; in the US its proportion is even higher (87%). While the proportion of variable pages remains small, 56% of participants reported moderate or fast growth. Increasing numbers of commercial printers offer a wide range of print products that can be both sold on the web and personalized. These trends are confirmed by the “drupa Global Trends” report published in spring 2014: 38% of commercial printers and 32% of publishing printers expressed their intention to invest in digital electrophotographic colour sheet printers.

Global Insights

Interactive printing on the increase in the publishing and packaging segment Interactivity is the watchword as print customers are realizing the power of communicating via the Internet and mobile technologies directly with their target audiences on a 1-2-1 basis. Cross-media campaigns, with data acquisition/analysis and the use of several channels (e.g. PURLs, Email, SMS), are increasingly demanded by customers. The range of applied technologies includes QR codes, other smart-print options, augmented reality and near-field communication. One third of the drupa panel of experts already offers interactive print of one form or another, i.e. interactive response elements in publications, business communications, advertisements, packaging and outdoor advertisements. As was to be expected, there are major regional differences: in the US 44% of printing companies which took part in the survey offer interactive printing, but only 3% of providers in the Middle East. A substantial proportion of drupa

panel members from the packaging sector also use Internet-based tools. 50% use QR codes, 43% use variable content, and 41% of all packaging printers that took part in the survey offer personalized print. This first drupa Global Insight report is based on a very detailed survey covering a wide range of topics assessing the impact of the Internet on print. The survey dealt with

many other issues such as CRM, Digital Asset Management and ‘Big Data’, as well as the automation of workflows, and the need for companies to have better IT skills. It investigated how the increasing digitization of communications is affecting the demand for conventional print and the demand for different print substrates (paper, board, film, metal or glass)? The “drupa Global Insights” report provides some informative answers.

It concludes that printers need to accept the reality of an Internet-driven multi-channel digital future, change their approach and invest accordingly. The English version will be released in midOctober 2014; the Executive Summary will be available in seven languages (German, English, French, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Chinese) at www.drupa.de.

Agfa Graphics wins two Gold Ink Awards MathildeStudios, Belgium, created the 2014 VIP Calendar. It was printed by Guido Maes Printingdeluxe, also of Belgium.

Agfa Graphics’ Azura Video Card brings printed and video messaging together in one campaign

Agfa Graphics has been honoured with two Gold Ink Awards from Printing Impressions magazine. The Gold Ink Awards are considered the industry’s most prestigious print competition. The Azura video card won a gold award in the “Direct Mail” category and the Agfa Graphics 2014 VIP Calendar won a silver award in the “Calendar” category. The video card was developed to promote Azura, the company’s global leading chemistry-free printing plate. The creative strategy was to showcase the product in a piece that integrates print and video technologies. When the video card is opened, an embedded screen starts playing an educational video about Azura plates. It was created using several Agfa Graphics technologies including Apogee workflow, Sublima screening, and processed through an Avalon N8 platesetter on Energy Elite

Pro plates. Designed by Rudy Van Hoey of MathildeStudios, Belgium, the gold awardwinning Azura video card was printed by Artoos, one of Agfa Graphics Partners in Development, also of Belgium. The Agfa Graphics 2014 VIP Calendar won a Gold Ink silver award. The 2014 VIP Calendar is a testimony to the “power of print” and was based on the theme “Connect/Create/Care”. A joint effort of the Agfa Graphics community, the VIP Calendar showcased the thirteen best images submitted by employees during a photo contest. It was created using several of Agfa Graphics’ technologies and materials, including Energy Elite Pro digital thermal printing plates, the Avalon platesetter with Apogee workflow software and Sublima screening technology. Specific offset printing techniques gave the calendar the additional flavor that make it a product demonstrating ’the power of print’. Rudy Van Hoey of

“It is an honour to be recognized for the creative visual achievements represented by our Azura video card and 2014 VIP Calendar,” said Deborah Hutcheson, Director of Marketing, Agfa Graphics North America. “To be chosen from among 1,000 entries is a testament to the passion that runs deep within our organization.” This year’s Gold Ink Award winning pieces surpassed their competitors based on print quality, technical difficulty and overall visual effect. A panel of distinguished graphic arts professionals judged entries over the course of four days. Winners will be honoured at the annual Gold Ink Awards & Hall of Fame Gala held on the evening of Sept. 29, at the Hyatt Regency at McCormick Place in Chicago.

Toray at WAN-IFRA World Publishing Expo 2-14 - to feature quality, productivity, environmental benefits of Waterless Printing Toray Industries will be exhibiting at the upcoming WAN-IFRA World Publishing Expo 2014, scheduled for 13-15 October in Amsterdam. The expo, being held in conjunction with three strategic conferences, is expected to draw broad global attendance. Toray will be located in Stand 11.565 at the Expo and will have copies of its 2nd Edition Toray Waterless Journal available for attendees. The Journal was printed on a KBA Cortina press by Rheinisch Bergische in Germany using waterless printing technology. “2014 has been a big year for waterless printing,” said Mitsunori Hayashi, General Manager of Sales and Marketing for the Toray Graphics factory in the Czech Republic of Toray. “Ecological printing is no longer seen as an expensive luxury, but as a profitable business. As a result, we have opened a new waterless plate manufacturing facility in the Czech Republic to address the fivefold increase in sales and turnover of Toray waterless printing plates over the last decade, and to make plates more readily available to our customers in Europe and the Americas. If the good attendance at our September open house for the new facility is any indication, we can expect to see even more interest at the WAN-IFRA World Publishing Expo 2014.” The World Printers Forum, co-located with the World Publishing Expo, will be held on 15-16 October, generating even more interest within the printing community for the event. There will also be an open stage in the exhibition hall for discussions about The Power of Print that is likely to stimulate good interaction among attendees.

DHV – Druckhaus und Verlagsservice GmbH, the print and publishing house that prints the daily newspaper. “In addition, the smaller environmental footprint of waterless printing was a significant driver in our investment decision. Not only is the quality of our newspaper improved, but we are garnering significant interest from outside organizations who wish to take advantage of our high quality, environmentally sustainable printing capabilities. It was an excellent investment decision!” Rodi Media, The Netherlands, prints 26 daily and Sunday newspapers as well as full-color newspapers for other publishers and printing services for other businesses. Rodi was the first printer in the world to invest in the KBA Cortina cold set waterless web offset press, with a goal of becoming a more sustainable printer delivering affordable, perfect quality printing, a goal that has been achieved and has positioned the company for further growth.

Waterless Benefits In addition to improved quality and reduction in water consumption, waterless printing also reduces waste and eliminates the need for toxic chemicals in the printing process. “Reduction of water consumption can be significant,” adds Hayashi. “A Swiss waterless printer tells us that he has

eliminated the use of approximately 250,000 litres of water annually, water that would have come from a key local source of drinking water. The elimination of toxic chemicals also reduces the possibility of contamination of precious water supplies and creates a safer working environment for employees.” By switching to waterless printing technology, printers can save time and money as well as water and trees. Less water consumption, less makeready waste, no toxic chemicals, higher quality—it all adds up to a smaller environmental footprint and a cost savings for both printers and their customers. “We encourage show attendees to stop by our stand,” Hayashi concluded. “Customer stories, advice from our experts and our showcase of a variety of product possibilities waterless offset printing affords adopters of the technology, will help visitors gain the facts they need when considering making a waterless printing decision. We expect it to be a busy and exciting show.”

Customer Successes Toray experts will be on hand at the Toray Booth during the event to talk about the benefits of waterless printing and to share customer success stories with visitors. One example is Trierischer Volksfreund, a daily German newspaper, who has recently installed a new KBA Cortina press and is looking to the increased quality delivered by waterless printing to expand its printed offerings beyond newspapers. “Printed products produced on the Cortina using Toray waterless plates deliver unprecedented quality,” said Franz-Josef Hirsch, CEO of

Flexible short-run digital printing of newspaper Niche audience or groups with specific interests or hobbies – normally these people form a group under a digital platform to communicate and exchange ideas. Printed communications are rare among them. How can our newspaper become a platform for them? At the Printing Summit of the forthcoming WAN-IFRA India 2014 Conference, Stefaan Vanysacker, Project Manager at Halewijn Drukkerij in Belgium, reports on a special

newspaper: Kerk & Leven, which has a weekly circulation of 300,000 copies – spread over 481 different editions. It is printed digitally. “Since offset is not viable for the many small editions, it was difficult to find a printer for its newspaper,” says Vanysacker. Kerk & Leven abandoned web offset production with the installation of two digital presses together with finishing system.

To compile the local editions, the newspaper counts on many contributors among its readers. Thanks to web-based editorial software with a template-based layout, the reader-journalists are able to flow their material right into the pages. Listen to this and many more innovative ideas which will be discussed at WAN-IFRA India 2014. The Conference will be held on September 17 and 18 at Hotel Le Meridien, New Delhi.

They found Primera’s CX1200 and FX1200 to be the perfect fit for their company’s needs. We offer a well-proven solution that’s affordable, easy to use and has the flexibility to produce virtually any label in any size or shape. Moreover, quite a number of people told us that Primera had some of the best print quality they found at Labelexpo, regardless of price. That was definitely a nice thing to hear from so many industry professionals.” Karen Crews, Xitron: “We were particularly impressed with the quantity and quality of visitors to the various booths in which Xitron products were on display. We couldn’t have chosen a better launch point for our Navigator label and flexographic workflow tools.”

AB Graphic International launches enhanced performance Digicon 3 Labelexpo Americas saw the launch of AB Graphic International’s latest machine - the all new Digicon Series 3 label converting line. This new model is an addition to the company’s existing Omega Digicon range and has been designed to meet the recent advances made in digital printing, in conjunction with the latest available technology. It was primarily driven by new

and existing customers’ needs and the A B Graphic ethos of continuous improvement and high quality. The Digicon 3 is equipped with a number of features including flat-bed hot foiling, flexo printing, over laminating and a newly designed flat-bed UV screen printing unit offering much higher operating parameters

capable of delivering outstanding production speeds. The new machine is available in a versatile left to right or right to left format. The maximum web width has been increased to 350mm (13.75”) as well as the maximum unwind and rewind rolls being increased to Ø800mm (31.5”). One major design change has been to integrate all of the electrical controls and components, therefore negating the need for an external cabinet, and thus greatly reducing the all-important footprint to free up space on the customer’s factory floor. The use of the latest technology components, such as carbon fibre rollers and lighter non-stick ink cartridges, make for easier handling and quicker wash up. In fact, the new machine has a host of ergonomic improvements to improve the general operation and reduce set up times significantly. Depending on the converting options selected, modules can be supplied in rotary, semi rotary, blank web and re-register modes for processing an impressive range of substrates.

Atlantic Zeiser previews new booklet encoding system Atlantic Zeiser, the German solution provider of personalization and coding systems, introduced the new DIGILINE Booklet at Labelexpo Americas 2014. The self-contained system represents the next evolutionary step in audit-proof encoding and verification of booklet labels for clinical trials. The increased demand for pharmaceutical booklets challenges pharmaceutical companies and subcontractors when it

30

September 2014

comes to late-stage encoding. Small batch sizes require quick job changes, while the need for thicker booklets expands. Stringent regulations make the installation of auditproof production processes necessary and controlling production cost becomes a major concern. Fulfilling these challenges with the new DIGILINE Booklet is the answer. Compared to conventional thermal transfer printers and rewinders, the system offers numerous advantages.

DIGILINE Booklet encodes booklets up to 4 mm thick that cannot be processed with thermal transfer technology and allows high-quality print on fully and partially transparent label stocks. Thanks to the digital print technology using UV-resistant inks, no more ribbons or print bars are required. This reduces working costs significantly. An integrated inspection-camera ensures process safety by checking every processed label. Misprinted, unprinted or missing labels are reported instantly. Areas of manual splices will be automatically rechecked with the integrated camera. A second camera ensures the lateral alignment of the print position on each label. The transport mechanism ensures gentle transport of different label formats with large diameter rolls and a single bending direction. The web tension is adjustable and thanks to the sensor operated web-edge control even telescoped mother rolls may be processed. ETI Converting Equipment debut Mini-Cohesio ETI Converting Equipment answers the needs of customers wishing to manufacture their own rolls of pressure sensitive material or pressure sensitive labels, but having space constraints with its new solution, Mini-Cohesio. This ultra-compact machine (less than 25 feet) uses 50% less space, has a 30% shorter web path, a fast cantilever set-up, is less expensive and combines all the latest in-line coating technologies. This servo driven technology is ideal to convert an unsupported film or paper which was previously printed in flexo, offset, gravure, digital, etc. into a finished label. The Mini-Cohesio was presented last year to the European market at Labelexpo Europe. It was launched and showcased to the American printers at Labelexpo Americas. The 13 (330mm) web width innovative equipment will be equipped with the Pellicut technology, a unique patent pending system designed to die-cut extremely thin release liners. The Pellicut can die-cut a label on an 18 micron polyester film up to a speed of 750 ft/min (225 m/min). Reducing the thickness of the liner, from a standard 30 micron PET

to an 18 micron liner, means almost 40% less liner. It also means more labels per roll, less roll changes on labeling line resulting in higher productivity, lower transport costs, less warehousing space, less liner wastage to finally increase the savings. The Pellicut is also adaptable to an existing Cohesio equipment or as a standalone unit.

During Labelexpo Americas, ETI also featured reverse gravure pre-printed beer label which was silicone coated and adhesive coated, as well as die-cut. Done on an 18 micron PET liner which had no die marks, the liner was converted in one manufacturing process from raw material to finished product at a speed of up to 500 fpm (150 m/min.). It conducted hourly demos on the machine.

FFEI reveals new Graphium features FFEI demonstrated significant new enhancements to its hybrid digital UV inkjet press, Graphium at Labelexpo Americas 2014. At Labelexpo, with its partner Fujifilm, FFEI demonstrated Graphium’s new over white capability, which is set to further extend the different applications a digital UV inkjet press can be used for. Adding an over white print capability not only increases the overall flexibility of what can be produced but also dramatically increases the potential opacity when used with the Graphium under white. This new, unique capability provides converters with a host of additional ways to enhance the overall look and feel of their labels.

clean-up and provide clarity. Additionally over white provides enhanced definition and clarity and brings the highest levels of flatness in pure white areas of a label. This is achieved by printing a second white as a mask of the visual effect of the under white. In addition to the over white, FFEI announced a number of additional enhancements including the capability to now support substrates of 40-600um allowing the thinnest liners to heavy duty vinyl to be used. Furthermore to ensure clients’ quality expectations can be easily defined and their colour requirements met regardless of when the job is reprinted, Graphium is capable of printing to an ISO 12647-2:2204 standard.

A number of these new features could be seen as part of the Graphium configuration that was demonstrated for the first time at Labelexpo. The complete system includes pre and post digital flexo stations, a cold foiling station and die cutter. Printers saw, first hand, how Graphium can convert complex jobs, which are not economically viable with standalone conventional or inkjet presses and appreciate the wide variety of label applications that can be converted on a hybrid digital press.

The use of over white can also significantly enhance text. For example when a colored background with white knockout text is required it often suffers a lack of clarity. In these cases small text in an opaque white may be overprinted or a combination of a knockout with overprinted white used to

Heidelberg and Gallus unveil new digital press for the growing label market World premiere of a new generation of digital machines for label printing – the Gallus DCS 340 impresses with 1200 dpi. During the “Gallus Innovation Days 2014”, which took place from 23 – 25 September, Heidelberg and Gallus unveiled the future machine generation for digital label printing. Gallus DCS 340 (Digital Converting System) is the designation of the new digital inline label printing system, which has been developed in cooperation with Heidelberg and Fujifilm.

The market is changing “Due to continuing growth in short-run label production and personalised, versioned labels, we are seeing investment on the market steadily shift towards printing presses that utilise digital printing. The growth potential for this printing method is considerable and we expect to see high growth rates over the next ten years,” says Stefan Heiniger, COO Label Business at Gallus Ferd. Rüesch AG.

“Today, less than twelve months after we started our collaboration with Fujifilm, we can stand alongside Gallus and unveil the first printready system. The only way to rapidly leverage growth potential in digital printing is through partnerships.” Heidelberg CEO Gerold Linzbach.

Despite this, many label printers have not yet taken the decision to introduce digital printing – in part due to the compromises that are associated with this process in label printing. Slow printing speeds, the inability to print some spot colours, inadequate workflow solutions and a lack of true inline finishing and embellishment capabilities can result in additional process steps or undesirable compromises when it comes to label features. What’s more, current digital printing press solutions often result in less efficient production and poor compatibility with

additional printing and embellishment processes.

The next generation sets new standards in printing and register quality The new Gallus DCS 340 digital inline label printing system features a printing module with nextgeneration inkjet printing heads. The unique print head design enables several heads to be joined together for a greater print width, without visible transitions. A native resolution of 1200 dpi delivers print quality that is unmatched in UV inkjet printing today. This technology – combined with the speed of flexographic printing and the efficiency of digital printing – results in the new Gallus DCS 340 digital press, and of course Gallus is also staying true to its high standards in register accuracy on this digital machine.

Process flexibility and productivity on a whole new level Digital technology makes it easier to handle variable data and versioning when producing labels and thus supports the cost-effective production of short runs. This gives label printers the flexibility that their customers expect from them. By combining the strengths of digital printing with an inline finishing process that has been specially optimised for digital printing, the Gallus DCS 340 gives users the chance to varnish, embellish and further process labels inline

support the matrix over just a short distance results in far fewer matrix tears and thus delivers greater process reliability. Complex die-cutting formes – with recessed edges, for example – remain problematic, however. The new Gallus high-performance matrix stripper was developed specifically for matrix removal with highly complex die lines at maximum speeds and enables a stable matrix removal process at all times. The test and development engineers at Gallus have taken a close look at the matrix-removal process and improved its functionality, its stability and thus its productivity with a new type of matrix stripper.

– from the roll to the finished die-cut label in a single production operation.

With seamless integration of conventional and digital processing steps, data preparation is a simple and efficient process.

Automated prepress workflow The standardised, user-friendly interface of the Gallus DCS 340 makes sure that label printers benefit from the speed, quality and consistency they need in digital printing. The Heidelberg Prinect Digital Front End is used to automate the prepress workflow and thus ensure data is prepared efficiently, complete with comprehensive colour management. The printer also benefits from functions such as spot colour matching, the PDF Toolbox and Prepress Manager for even greater efficiency.

A perfect combination of digital printing technology and conventional further processing Digital printing offers benefits in terms of reducing order-related fixed costs and costs for versioning and personalisation, while the conventional printing functions in this machine system open up additional embellishment options and enable inline finishing such as coating and die cutting.

42

September 2014

The Gallus DCS 340 has been developed jointly with Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG and Fujifilm to meet the requirements of the future and offers label printers the ultimate in quality, productivity and flexibility. “Thanks to the Gallus DCS 340, label printers will be able to enjoy the benefits of efficient digital production and a full range of functions, even when handling short runs and personalised jobs – just as they have come to expect from Gallus machine systems,” says Heiniger.

The new Gallus RCS 430 For the first time ever, visitors to the “Gallus Innovation Days” were offered “Looking over the developers’ shoulders” part of the programme which provided an opportunity to get an idea of what the new Gallus RCS 430 is going to be like. Since its market launch, the Gallus RCS is being completely revamped for the first time. The machine system is being equipped with a state-of-the-art control platform so as to be ready for future market requirements and advances in technology. This control platform is already in use in the Gallus ECS 340 and Gallus EM S machine systems, and promises printers potential synergies in terms of providing a standardised technology platform for a range of machine systems. Reduced complexity is a further advantage. Having a common control platform simplifies the training of press operators and means staff can easily be assigned to different machine systems as they are already familiar

with the user interface. Many of the spare parts for different machine types are also the same, which makes servicing work more straightforward. Furthermore, various technical adjustments have been made to the hardware based on Gallus RCS users’ feedback and experiences. Examples include improvements to web transport, a higher register accuracy and optimised inking units in the offset printing unit, which exhibit enhanced colour stability.

Innovative screen printing & metallic doming Apart from the Gallus Screeny A-Line which is known for maximising the number of times plates can be re-used, Gallus demonstrated live the new combination printing process, metallic doming for unique metal relief effect. The process was demonstrated on the Gallus RCS 330. The special feature of metallic doming is that it enables users to apply a metal relief effect on transparent self-adhesive materials or tube laminate as well as all standard self-adhesive paper substrates. Gallus Customer Services offers new consumables including Twinlock coating and new doctor blade. The Twinlock coating dispenses entirely with the need for flexographic adhesive tapes and all the associated drawbacks and there are now three different high-quality doctor blade types being offered for all Gallus presses.

Digital printing drives change in the growth segment The newly unveiled digital printing system has been designed for the self-adhesive labels market. The global print volume for these labels is growing by around four percent a year. Although only around five percent of this volume is printed digitally, this

figure is rising rapidly. Indeed, digital printing is driving change in this highly promising market segment. It is anticipated that, in the medium term, just under half of the presses sold in this sector will be digital. By launching this new technology, Heidelberg and Gallus will be actively shaping change in the business models used in this segment and offering users a versatile and cost-effective solution. “Heidelberg has reached another milestone in its realignment in the digital sector. The next steps to develop additional digital printing systems as part of the collaboration with Fujifilm are already being taken,” says Linzbach. The Gallus Group, which was recently taken over in full by Heidelberg, presented the forthcoming Gallus DCS 340 (DCS = Digital Converting System) digital label printing press, which is based on inkjet technology from Fujifilm at the “Gallus Innovation Days 2014” event. Heidelberg is to manufacture

the inkjet unit at its Wiesloch-Walldorf site, while the flexo and converting units for the new press will be produced at the Gallus plant in St. Gallen, Switzerland. The system is slated to enter series production in the coming year and will meet growing demand for the cost-effective production of short, medium, and versioned runs in label printing. “We are pursuing a growth strategy in our digital printing operations,” says Heidelberg CEO Gerold Linzbach. “Today, less than twelve months after we started our collaboration with Fujifilm, we can stand alongside Gallus and unveil the first print-ready system. The only way to rapidly leverage growth potential in digital printing is through partnerships. This helps us get a lot closer to our medium-term sales targets in the digital sector.”

Sappi and Innovia highlight the future of coffee and tea packaging at Coteca 2014 Coated, uncoated, functional papers, boards, and flexible films to meet the most challenging packaging and converting requirements. Sappi Fine Paper Europe and Innovia Films jointly exhibited at Coteca 2014. It is the global expo for the coffee, tea and cocoa industry and takes place from the 24-26 September at the Hamburg Messe in Germany. During the event, the companies showcased renewable and compostable films and other innovative developments that represent the future of coffee, tea and cocoa packaging. “We are especially pleased to be bringing Sappi Algro Nature papers laminated with Innovia Films’ NatureFlex to this audience,” said Kerstin Dietze, Marketing Manager Speciality Papers of Sappi Fine Paper Europe. “This unique laminated solution, developed collaboratively by Sappi and Innovia, is home compostable and designed for environmentally friendly packaging applications. At Sappi, the environment is everything, and Algro Nature with NatureFlex laminate is a great example of our dedication to sustainability making its way into the marketplace.” Neil Banerjee, Market Manager for Innovia Films, adds, “Over the past few years, Sappi and Innovia have collaborated on a number of projects to leverage each other’s expertise in order to deliver a complete solution. Coteca presents a great opportunity to showcase some of the work we have completed together and raise awareness in the marketplace. We got the opportunity to talk with attendees about this highly effective and environmentally sustainable alternative for coffee and tea packaging.” Kerstin Dietze states that converters who have tested this laminated homecompostable solution have been enthusiastic, finding that it functions well and is easy to print on with compostable inks as well as easy to heat-seal and form into pouches, bags and flow wrap packs. “The ability to be composted in a home compost bin is the icing on the cake, so to speak,” she added. In addition to Algro Nature with NatureFlex laminate, Sappi Fine Paper Europe showcased a broad array of packaging grades, both papers and SBB

boards, that are uniquely suited to coffee and tea packaging, including those for flexible packaging, high-quality packaging, environmentally friendly packaging, tea crimped envelopes, to protect food and for premium packaging etc. Innovia Films also displayed a host of innovative and complete solutions for tea and coffee packs designed to replace traditional laminate packaging with more sustainable materials. Banerjee says, “Our NatureFlex films are increasingly being used in bio-laminate packaging constructions to provide necessary barriers. In addition to its environmental benefits, NatureFlex films also offer a host of advantages for packing and converting such as inherent dead fold and anti-static properties; high gloss and resistance to grease and oil; good barrier to gases, aromas and mineral oils; a wide heatseal range; and easy opening. If the ethos of the brand is sustainability, NatureFlex and Algro Nature are an obvious choice.” Innovia Films also displayed a range of products at the show. The issue of contaminant migration resulting from the use of recycled content in paper board packaging has been tackled by both Sappi and Innovia Films. Sappi’s recyclable Mineral Oil Barrier (MOB) coated papers, including Algro Guard M and Leine Guard M, both of which offer a minimum 15-month mineral oil barrier functionality. The highly efficient and integrated barrier solution is offering also excellent heat sealing properties. Innovia’s NatureFlex has been tested and proven to offer up to five years mineral oil barrier protection. Also available is Propafilm RCU, a BOPP film that provides an 18-month barrier to mineral oil. Traditional cardboard packaging materials typically contain recycled fibres for which one of the primary raw materials is newspapers. Newspaper printing inks, as well as many commercial printing inks, contain mineral oil as solvents. Because the printing ink

components are not completely removed during paper and cardboard recycling, mineral oil components can remain in the fibres. If the recycled board is used for packaging of food or transport boxes of the food packages, the mineral oil residues can migrate into the foodstuff contents, even when the contents are protected by an inner bag. Printing inks used for printing packaging materials can also be a source of mineral oil contamination. Using NatureFlex, Algro Guard M and Algro Leine M or Propafilm RCU eliminates this risk to food safety and means that there is a product to meet a wide range of shelf life requirements. “As always, we are working closely in partnership with our customers in the packaging sector to help them identify the best means of differentiating their offerings while also expending significant resources in the development of new and innovative solutions that will help them reach that goal,” concludes Kerstin Dietze. “We are extremely excited to be bringing the results of this work to Coteca to spread the word in that the future of coffee and tea packaging is here.” Banerjee added “We have advised companies around the world on the options available to them to replace existing nonrenewable packaging formats with more sustainable options. Many of the samples we had on show on the stand are good examples. There is certainly a move in the tea and coffee industry towards sustainable packaging.”

Consumer Research, R&D bring India’s most loved mango varieties to Indian consumers India is the world’s largest producer of mangoes with more than 100 varieties of the fruit grown across the country. So it’s not surprising that Indians are very passionate about the fruit and have given it the title of “King of Fruits.”

The development process demonstrated research and development’s capability for creating locally relevant mango beverages for each region within India. The team also supported the commercialization of the new beverages and monitored the production process to ensure flawless execution and quality over shelf-life. The entire research and development project took seven months.

This summer, PepsiCo-India tapped into India’s national obsession with mangoes with the launch of three new mango varieties under the umbrella of its non-carbonated mango juice drink beverage, Slice. These three limited edition mango offerings from Slice include the sweet and golden Banganapalli from the South, the juicy Kesar from Gujarat and the royal Dussehri from Lucknow. Research and development work helped shape the idea of giving consumers a taste of the most liked regional varieties to dial up a real mango experience through a unique bottled beverage format. This innovation also helped the brand command a premium both in taste and price. “Indians love the wide variety of mangoes that exist in India,” said Anshul Khanna, senior manager, Juice and Juice Drinks Category, PepsiCo India. “Different varieties of mangoes grow in different parts of the country, and consumers have very strong affinity for the varieties that grow in their home region. At the same time, they also have a very strong desire to sample the wide range of mango varieties that are not available where they live,” said Khanna. “That’s what started us on our two-and-a-half year collaborative journey with marketing, research and development, and procurement teams to bring to Indian consumers the most signature varieties in a unique bottle format,” he said. The first step was selecting the new mango varieties from the more than 100 commercial varieties found in India. The mangoes had to satisfy consumer taste preferences across different regions and be available in sufficient quantities to meet production demands. Extensive consumer research was conducted across India, and three mango varieties were identified from northern, western and southern India. The selected mangoes

“Our best-in-class R&D team brings unique beverages, based upon strong focus areas such as scientific techniques for product development and stringent quality assurance leading to the development of great tasting beverages,” said Murali TSR, senior director, Research and Development, PepsiCo India.

were then turned over to PepsiCo India’s research and development team to create a production processes that would take the fruit from plant to the store shelves. “Our goal was to create three new beverages that authentically reflect the flavor, consistency and colour of the selected mangoes,” said Sanjay Naphade, director of beverages, Research and Development, PepsiCo India. The research and development team in India leveraged key commercial flavour suppliers and generated sophisticated analytical data to help decode the various characteristics that make up the unique aroma and tastes of the three new mango varieties. Additionally they utilized a sensory panel, a group of highly skilled people who are trained to identify unique flavor characteristics, to develop a lexicon for profiling the various mango varieties: sweet and golden Banganapalli; juicy Kesar; and royal Dussehri. From this collective research, the team was able to develop flavour top notes, or beverage enhancers, that maintain the authenticity of each mango variety during the production process, resulting in a superior product experience to the consumer.

In April 2014, the three new limited edition Slice mango juice flavors were launched in India in single-serve bottles.

Pragati pioneers expanded gamut printing with Esko Equinox Pragati Offset, Hyderabad has successfully implemented Esko Equinox extended gamut – or fixed inkset – printing solution. Equinox Expanded Color Gamut (ECG) technology is Esko’s patented technology for converting packaging graphics from CMYK and spot colour to a seven-colour process. It is applied in the prepress department when preparing jobs for press. Converting entire files results in extremely close matches to spot colours, improved pictorial images, and the ability to print more colours than available ink stations on the press, resulting in improved image quality and brand impact. The major benefit, however, is realized in the pressroom as jobs print more economically and more consistently. Pragati Director, Mr. Harsha Paruchuri speaks about his early interest in this solution, “I saw this solution in an early beta stage at the EskoWorld Conference in Tampa, Florida about 4 years ago. It struck me as very interesting even at that stage. Taking a large 7 colour gamut and having the software convert an artwork with any number of Pantones or RGB images to those 7 colours (or 6 or 5, depending on what you want) sounded interesting.”

Mr. Harsha Paruchuri, Director Pragati Offset, Hyderabad and Mr. Shrihari Rao, sales director India Esko hold up an Esko Equinox test print in front of one of Pragati’s new 7 color Komori press.

Since the CMYK colour space lacks in the green, orange and blue-violet areas, adding these three inks to expand the colour space makes sense. A 7 colour strategy is made after measurement of the test forms. The set up and maintenance of the profiles and strategies are the main work. Equinox conversion can be done in Esko’s prepress editors with the ability to manually interact and change some of the conversions - or it can be set up in the ticket and done automatically by the RIP during the normalization. There is also a Adobe Photoshop plug-in for interactively converting images to 7 colours. Mr. Paruchuri explains how Pragati Offset uses Equinox, “Once the profiles are made, it is almost a push button solution as far as spot colours are concerned with the images processed automatically to create a 7 colour separation set. And since we have a complete Esko workflow, Equinox fits seamlessly into the workflow.” Mr Paruchuri shares the thought process that went into installing two new 7 colour plus coater offset presses at the end of 2013, “We thought an additional unit would give us more flexibility as we already print a lot of 6 colour jobs and there were times when we felt an additional colour would improve the quality and consistency. Equinox also played a part in our thinking when we ordered

50

September 2014

these new 7 colour presses.” Shrihari Rao, Esko’s sales director for India is pleased that Equinox has found resonance with one of the world’s most innovative printers. Rao says, “It is only fitting that Esko Equinox -which received a prestigious Intertech Technology Award- this year, is in the capable hands of a printer who continues to win awards and enormous global recognition for its quality and innovation.” Benefits of expanded colour gamut reproduction The ability to create an infinite number of colours from 7 process colours promotes “gang” press runs – and the economic savings can surpass a million dollars per press each year. Customers using Equinox ECG technology report that they use 7-colour process profitably in a production environment for offset cartons as well as for flexible packaging and labels. This has enabled many of the world’s largest consumer product companies to convert entire product lines to expanded gamut. In the past 17 years, Pragati Offset has become one of the leading packaging and label printers in the country, winning many national and international awards. While the company sees the use of Equinox as hugely advantageous for offset printed cartons and label printing on its 8 colour flexographic

pressideas/ plc

presses, it feels that Equinox is the right solution for any project with high gamut requirements from garment catalogues, coffee table and paint swatch books, and even calendars and diaries. “We’ve also recently used it for a wedding card that included a reproduction of an MF Husain painting that contained rich oranges and blues,” says Paruchuri. Mr. Paruchuri is very clear about the benefits of using this innovation to match a wide

variety of brand and spot colours including many Pantone shades with a fixed set of 7 inks and without having to wash up a press for every job. “A lot of time and money can be saved by not having to wash a million dollar press for 15 to 20 minutes to get the correct shade. The productivity gains by not having to wash-up and change inks are significant, especially if there are a lot of shorter run jobs,” says Harsha Paruchuri in conclusion.
