Scodix has announced the world’s first installation from its Ultra 1000’s Series of digital enhancement presses at the Heidelberg Italy Digital Experience Center. The inauguration of the Scodix Ultra 2000 press was celebrated with an exclusive Heidelberg Italy VIP Open House Event in late October.

Mauro Luini, Scodix South Europe & MEA Sales Manager states, “It was wonderful to see the Scodix Ultra 2000 press in action and visitors lining up to see. Especially during this time of the pandemic, it was a welcome break to have a live event that was productive but also safely managed for all attendees.”

“We are thrilled to be the first to install the newly launched Scodix Ultra 2000 press and to have had the opportunity to show off the outstanding capabilities of the press at our Discover The Unexpected Event. Guests simply could not get enough of watching the press produce such a variety of quality applications on one press,” states Rinaldo Mattera, Heidelberg Italia Digital Business Manager.

The Scodix Ultra 1000’s Series consists of six digital enhancement presses, each targeting a specific market requirement including commercial printing, packaging printing, Web2Print and Web2Pack.

The Scodix Ultra 2000 Digital Enhancement Press fuses new levels of flexibility, quality and productivity, generating unprecedented value for commercial PSPs, publishers, tag producers, trade finishers and other specialty printing providers. Offering all Scodix enhancement applications on one platform, and including automatic polymer switching for superior productivity, the Ultra 2000 press provides the largest array of enhancement capabilities in the print industry today. Enhancing material weights from 135-675 gsm / 6-30 points and material thickness up to 0.7 mm / 700 microns, each press is also compatible with various CMYK print processes including: offset, HP Indigo Electroink, inkjet and toner, up to B1 format. Products enriched by Scodix enhancements include business/greeting cards, folders, book covers, brochures, labels, retail tags, packaging and more.

OPA felicitates Prof. Kamal Chopra The executive body of Offset Printers’ Association felicitates Mr. Chopra on his first OPA visit after becoming AIFMP President. Prof. Kamal Chopra is elected as the President of All India Federation of Master Printers (AIFMP). During his first visit to OPA office after being named the new president of AIFMP Prof Chopra is felicitated by the executive body of Offset Printers’ Association. AIFMP is the apex body of 250,000 Indian printers and President is the highest seat of this body. At the felicitation, Prof. Chopra talked in detail on the general industry conditions prevailing in the country. “The year 2021 may be the year of survival for all of us,” he says. “Many changes are in store while starting our work, once again after this long lockdown. India is dominated with small and micro printers, who are suffering due to these pandemic conditions and longest ever lockdown. The Internet and digitisation is hitting normal printing very hard. Only recently government of India notified not to get printed the calendar and diaries, etc. But in a country where the internet is yet to reach 51% population, such a decision can be said to be tying a horse behind the cart. As per

6

the available feedback, not less than 23% printing units closed or shifted their business during this period. My first and primary goal is to get some relief for the Micro and Small printers of the country,” Prof. Chopra added. He continues, “Let’s get past the “print is dead” misconception. The future of print is embracing the exciting new waves of communication and media innovation more than ever. Yes, the use of print has declined over the last two decades, but that ended a few years ago. The industry is now positioned to expand, especially with the oversaturation and privacy issues digital platforms experience today.” He also says that the consensus is that big changes are coming. The top printing companies are embracing innovations, integrating with digital technology, and getting more customized. Welcoming Prof. Chopra Mr.Gagandeep Singh, Vice President OPA said, “It is our honour that once again the President of our apex body is from Ludhiana, we are delighted for this rare achievement. It is

perhaps for the first time ever that same person is elected for President of AIFMP from this part of the country. Mr. Amarjot Arora, Mr. Manoj Kalra, Mr. Nitin Malik, Mr.Amrinder Singh and Mr. Aman Gupta were also present on the occasion.

Intergraf launches Young Talent Award 2021 Intergraf is accepting entries to its 2021 Young Talent Award! Candidates must submit a paper answering two selected questions. Entries will be judged by a panel of experts, with the winner awarded a grant of €3,000. Since 2017, Intergraf’s Young Talent Award has celebrated the work of young people in the European printing industry. The awards aim is to provide a platform for the next generation of print professionals to share their views with the wider sector and to reward the best ideas. How can the European printing industry attract young people? This was the question addressed by entrants into Intergraf’s 2020 Young Talent Award earlier this year. After receiving a myriad of fantastic responses, Intergraf exceptionally offered prizes for second and third place, as well as first. After this resoundingly successful award, let’s see what 2021 has to offer! The role print has played in shaping European society for centuries, is something to be proud of. But the historical importance

of print also feeds into the persistent misconception that it is old-fashioned – despite how our modern, high- tech, digital industry actually looks today. For the industry to recruit the best people and safeguard its future, it is vital that young people’s views are taken into account about the attractiveness and image of print. With this in mind, Intergraf is accepting entries for the 2021 Young Talent Award!

should fulfill the criteria of being a young student, apprentice or worker in print (max. age 25) from one of Intergraf’s member countries. Entries are to be sent to Beatrice Klose, Secretary General of Intergraf, by email (bklose@intergraf.eu) or post (Intergraf. Avenue Louise 130A, 1050 Brussels, Belgium) before 15 February 2021. Good luck!

Interested candidates are required to submit their ideas on the following questions in 2-5 pages: 1. How will print develop in the future? 2. What kind of working environment are you looking for? How could a printing company provide this? Entrants

technotrans increases consolidated revenue apart from consolidated revenue increase as compared with previous quarter, also achieves adjusted EBIT margin on a par with previous year. technotrans SE posted consolidated revenue of euro 141.5 million in the first nine months of the 2020 financial year, only 7.8 % down on the prior-year figure of euro 153.4 million. This was mainly due to a solid business development in the third quarter of 2020. Consolidated EBIT remained positive at euro 3.9 million with an EBIT margin of 2.8 %. Adjusted for one-off charges totalling euro 2.1 million, EBIT reached euro 6.0 million. The adjusted EBIT margin of 4.2 % was at the previous year’s level. For the 2020 financial year, the Board of Management expects consolidated revenue of around euro 185 million with an EBIT margin of approx. 2.5 to 3.0%. Adjusted for one-off effects, this is expected to reach the previous year’s level of around 4.0%. The forecast is subject to the proviso that no corona-related restrictions are imposed in the remaining weeks of the year that go beyond the measures initiated by the government at the beginning of November. The updated strategy 2025 will be announced at the end of 2020. “Business development has exceeded our expectations. Following a solid business performance in the third quarter, consolidated revenue after nine months is only moderately down on the previous year despite ongoing corona-related charges. Despite high additional expenditure on

structural adjustments within the technotrans Group, which we have pushed ahead with independently of corona, technotrans remains profitable. Adjusted for one-off effects, we achieved an EBIT margin at the previous year’s level. We are satisfied with this business performance against the background of a very difficult global economic situation,” says Michael Finger, Spokesman of the Board of Management of technotrans SE. The technotrans Group posted consolidated revenue of euro 141.5 million in the first nine months of the 2020 financial year (previous year:euro 153.4 million). This was only 7.8 % below the previous year despite coronarelated burdens. EBIT remained positive at euro 3.9 million (previous year: euro 6.6 million) with an EBIT margin of 2.8 % (previous year: 4.3 %). EBIT included one-off charges of euro 2.7 million from structural and personnel adjustments as well as one-off income of euro 0.6 million from the termination of a fine proceeding (Federal Financial Authority BaFin). This resulted in an adjusted EBIT of euro 6.0 million. At 4.2%, the adjusted EBIT margin remained at the previous year’s level. In the Services segment, business development continued to be adversely

affected in particular by corona-related travel restrictions. Growth markets and plastics processing remain stable – the printing industry has stabilised after a recent sharp corona-related downturn but remained well below the previous year’s level. In the machine tool industry, the third quarter saw structural burdens in addition to corona effects. This resulted in a decline in revenue in the laser and machine tool industry, which could not be fully offset by the continued growth of the EUV business. Business in the plastics processing industry developed positively thanks to successful sales activities. The same applies to the growth markets. New business in battery and converter thermal management solutions for rail and special vehicles, e-buses and e-trucks contributed to the pleasing business trend. The Group also achieved further successes in medical technology. The rampup phase for the serial production of the newly developed blood cooling system will be completed in the fourth quarter of 2020. Based on the business performance in the first nine months of fiscal year 2020, the Board of Management expects consolidated revenue of around euro 185 million with an EBIT margin of approx. 2.5 to 3.0 % and a positive free cash flow for fiscal year 2020. “We are counteracting the currently growing challenges posed by the COVID 19 pandemic with a high degree of customer orientation, technological competence, creativity in the development of individual concepts and strict cost control. Our pipeline is full! We will take advantage of the opportunities that present themselves! In the future, we will position ourselves even more strongly for this purpose. We will present the Strategy 2025 at the end of 2020,” says Michael Finger.

World News media Congress 2021 WAN-IFRA announces new dates for World News Media Congress 2021. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, WAN-IFRA postpones the 72nd World News Media Congress, which was to be held in June 2021. The event is now scheduled in Taiwan from 28 to 30 September 2021. The decision was made following consultations with exhibitors, speakers, officials, and WAN-IFRA strategic partner UDN (United Daily News Group of Taiwan) and considering the significant impact of international travel at this time. The event will include the 2nd World Media Leaders Summit, 28th World Editors Forum and the 5th Women in News Summit. “Our first consideration under the current circumstances must be for the health and well-being of all local and international participants and stakeholders involved in Congress. For the past several weeks, WAN-IFRA has been closely monitoring the international situation with partners and officials. It is now clear that setting new dates in September is the correct decision.” said Vincent Peyregne, CEO WAN-IFRA. The Congress will be held in

a country that has, to date, been the least affected by the pandemic globally. This remarkable achievement is in part due to the highly digitised population of almost 24-million people and a democratically elected government and competitive society who embrace technology and innovation. Located at the heart of the Asia-Pacific rim, Taiwan has transformed itself into a vibrant democracy and economic power over the past 50 years. The capital, Taipei, is today the country’s political, economic, educational and cultural centre, and is also one of the major hubs in East Asia.

In Taipei, we guarantee you three things: scenery, delicious food and hospitality. So we look very much forward to seeing you in free, democratic and beautiful Taiwan!” “WAN-IFRA would like to thank the global news media community for its continuous support and encouragement during this disrupted year. “As we are constantly reminded, great things happen when the community comes together for our annual World Congress, and we are excited at the prospect of reconnecting in Taipei next September,” commented Peyregne.

Duncan Wang, chairman of United Daily News Group: “We are extremely excited to be able to host the World News Media Congress 2021 in Taipei. In 2020, we all experienced dramatic changes in the news industry and our life and work models were heavily impacted by the pandemic. Taipei 2021 will be a great opportunity to hold conversations and reflect on new paths for quality journalism.

PrintHow 2020 The Canon virtual conference 500 Digital Printers join in to hear from the leaders of the Digital Print Industry.

To say that printing is on the decline may not be a correct statement, according to Digital Print Expert, Ralf Schlözer. The only difference is the runs are getting shorter, printers are adding more value to the final print with suitable supply chain re-modelling and the shifts in the applications.

Key Notes : > With the motto of Inspire, Explore and Improve, the attendees had exciting news with live demos on Canon machines. > Talks with experts on the trends in the industry and how printers can actually benefit from the available opportunities. > Panel discussion with many questions from the audience addressed by the experts – all online.

November 2020

The 3rd edition of the PrintHow conference by Canon was held online on 25th of November from the Canon experience center in Germany in which more than

at all at standstill. Rather, the shifting demands and competition from digital media is altering the way we consume and produce print. He added “High-

volume production inkjet printing is one of the latest technologies to address the demand for cost efficient short run printing, just-in-time production and valueadded print”. Inkjet technology, according to him, has now reached new levels of maturity to compete effectively against traditional printing methods and alternative media channels and is opening new opportunities.

With the motto of Inspire, Explore and Improve, the attendees had some exciting news with live demos on Canon machines and talks with experts on the trends in the industry and how printers can actually benefit from the available opportunities followed by a panel discussion with many questions from the audience addressed by the experts – all online. The pandemic has opened up vistas for companies to explore the possibilities of promoting their products online with possibilities of demos and interacting with people and answering to their queries from the confines of the offices and homes equipped with just desktops, laptops or mobiles. The topic of deliberation was titled as the transition from offset to digital this year. The speakers did explain the Canon portfolio of digital machines like the ProStream 1800 which is expected to have over 50 installations worldwide by year end and VarioPRINT iX-Series which has over 75 orders already received from across the globe. Christian Unterberger from Canon said in his opening remarks that Canon holds 34% market share worldwide as confirmed recently by InfoTrends. This further consolidates the leadership of the company in the continuous feeding machines market. He also emphasized that it is a known fact that the combined power of print along with digital communication results in higher response rate and is a sure tell-tale sign of commercial prints’ success though in varying decrease all across the world. Ralf Schlözer, a Digital Print Expert, while talking on the trends Shaping the Inkjet Adoption in Asia Pacific region, emphasized that the printing industry is not

Though the traditional printed products like Newspapers/Magazine, Mass mailing, B/W statements and static catalogues may well be in decline but has been replaced by special interest publications, direct mail with cross media campaigns, smart transactional documents and BOD business has seen an upturn in the recent years, not to talk about Photobooks and POD books.

According to Ralf, the main drivers for transition from Offset to Digital was the performance, quality and media diversity of Offset which now is not a limiting factor for Digital printing with the inherent flexibility aspect available to printers today. Digitization of value chain, sustainability and modern print applications were other points he elaborated upon. Inkjet today has reached a maturity levels which can amaze an Offset customer both in terms of quality as well as pricing. Asia Pacific region today consumes almost half of the world’s printing paper and the consumption of paper has only increased from 44.9 million tons in 2010 to 46.2 million tons in 2019. So, to say that printing is on the decline may not be a correct statement according to Ralf. The only difference is the runs are getting shorter, printers are adding more value to the final print with suitable supply chain re-modelling and the shifts in the applications.

The Covid 19 pandemic certainly has left it marks on the world and so has it on the print industry. But it is a temporary phenomenon, he says. In Europe, the average run-length of books declined by a third from 2010 to 2015. A typical traditionally published nonfiction book in the US sells 250 copies a year, whereas for a self published book it is just around 30 books. In the same breath, real time order data to start production has diminished the need for stocking. The availability of specialty and niche titles has only improved – there is nothing called ‘out of print’ anymore; the publishers have succeeded in drying out the risk of over stocking, damage during storage, currency fluctuation effects etc. the books have moved to stay in an electronic warehouse instead of being physically stored thus avoiding the above challenges. The book exports from East Asia (China to be specific) had peaked in 2017 and are showing a steady decline with markets

becoming more and more local, giving opportunities for local digital printers. The online market has increased leaps and bounds in the last few years in the APAC region and so has parcel shipping with China leading the pack at 26% year on year (YoY) growth, followed by India at 19% YoY and Australia 7% YoY. Today Digital printers are taking advantage of the unpacking experience with products which would help sellers to give product tips and explanations along with new offers which can reduce complaints and returns as well. Moreover, the advantage of dynamic couponing can also be added on to the offerings in the parcels, all of which have big opportunities for Digital printers. Talking of Inkjet technology, it started out with limited application and more of volume focus. Today, the technology has immensely matured and is available for different volume bands as well as almost any required quality levels along with considerable application flexibilities. This amply displays the confidence of the market when we see the sales figures of Continuous Feed Inkjet presses in US, Europe and APAC (though the APAC will take a while to catch up with the prior two). It is further expected that the Digital share in the printing industry will only increase further, driven specifically by the inkjet revolution. According to studies, the global value share of Digital is 2.8% but it constitutes 12% of the total revenue which in fact is a very encouraging note for every Digital printer. Provin to showcase Miyakoshi capabilities with installation at New Delhi Centre Miyakoshi and Provin expand presence in the growing Indian market with Okhla Demo Centre showcasing an MLP 13 C – a 13 inch model with speed up to 200 ipm. An interview with Akshay Kaushal. After receiving huge success across the world for their various products, Miyakoshi felt the need of increasing their presence and cater to the growing Indian market. It was then that they associated with Provin Technos around 2.5 years ago. Prior to that, Miyakoshi’s presence in India was limited.

Provin showcases Miyakoshi’s capabilities to the customers first hand by setting up a demo centre for its Flagship Full-Servo High Speed semi-rotary offset press for labels Miyakoshi MLP.

Key Notes : > Miyakoshi as a brand has been well received by customers in India. > The product which is ahead of time and is best in its category worldwide. > Provin sets up a demo centre in New Delhi to display the great capabilities of Miyakoshi press.

November 2020

“Miyakoshi has been well established and well received across the globe by customers, especially in Europe,” says Akshay Kaushal, Executive Director, Provin Technos. “However, their journey so far in India has been rather different. Although Miyakoshi as a brand has been well received by customers in India, unfortunately it has not resulted in many orders to show. The reason for the same is a market which is yet to understand the importance of a product which is ahead of time for the Indian market and is best in its category worldwide. This being one part, the other part is the capital investment, which is usually on the higher side when compared to a top of the line Flexo press,” he adds. Initial investment on the Miyakoshi MLP series is definitely on the higher side when compared any flexo press. However, it is to be realised how much a customer spends additionally on the plate cost and on the tooling required on a flexo press. If you count these as well, initial investment becomes almost equal. The importance of having a Miyakoshi Offset Press is yet to be realised

in the market and to cater the same, Provin have set up a demo centre in New Delhi, to display Miyakoshi press capabilities.

Miyakoshi hybrid flexo and offset label press installation at the Okhla demo centre After having a successful installation of the First Miyakoshi Press in India in the year 2017 @ Pragati Pack, Hyderabad, Provin felt the need of showcasing the product’s capability to the customers first hand and decided to set up a demo centre in 2019 for its Flagship Full-Servo High Speed semi-rotary offset press for labels - Miyakoshi MLP. “When it comes to web-fed offset presses, Miyakoshi ranks right on

pressideas/ plc

top in the world and we believe it has to be shown to the customers first hand in order for them to appreciate it,” says Akshay. Notably, machines from other manufacturers in this category haven’t quite performed up to the mark, creating a doubtful image for the technology itself in the market. “In order to break that mindset, we need the customers to come and see the machine running live. It is a simple concept, believe what you see,” asserts Akshay. The machine at the demo centre is of the following configuration: Model - MLP13C: Delam-Relam Unit + Flexo Unit + 5 Offset Units + Flexo Unit + Die Cutting Unit, Roll-to-Roll. It is equipped with performance enhancing features such as the Advanced Cold Start Function, Automatic Wash Up System for the printing units, Automatic Registration with Back Strobe from BST Eltromat, Corona Treatment, CNC Lateral Adjustment and more. Even with all these performance enhancing features equipped in the press already, the highlight of the press is its speed and the beautiful step back mechanism with S-Type dual pull rollers to support high speeds and extremely stable paper transport system. “Most of the people don’t know yet but Miyakoshi Semi-Rotary Presses are the fastest in the world and not only in terms of mechanical speeds but in terms of actual production speeds. The cycle speed of the machine does not get affected based on the repeat lengths set, which generally is the opposite in similar presses. Higher productivity coupled with offset print quality makes it an ideal press for short and medium run length jobs,” says Akshay.

The hybrid press market in India “The hybrid press market should have picked up in India by now and should have been well established too,” believes Akshay. As the run lengths are getting shorter, the hybrid press as a solution has been overlooked in the industry so far and has jumped directly to digital. Although there are other hybrid press solutions in the market, opting for the right technology/product matters big time. “Though all the technologies have its own role to play, a hybrid Offset press is a must have in every label conversion house,” he claims. Many used Miyakoshi Business form

presses in India have been installed by the customers. Miyakoshi, a master in offset technology, is also equally strong in digital print systems. They have been the OEM partners for many major brands and also have their own industry leading press models. In the DPS segment, Miyakoshi has 40% market share worldwide and in India, the company has installed two new High Speed Semi-rotary offset presses in the past 2.5 years. “Talking about offset label presses, 50% of the hybrid label presses in Europe are from Miyakoshi and 70% of the offset labels produced in Europe are produced on Miyakoshi presses. We target to keep promoting MLP series in India as a

Provin, at present, has been converting jobs for the customers who are planning to enter into the label industry and also for others as-well. “This way customers get an actual picture of the machine capabilities and the benefits this particular product has in offer. We have also been conducting individual demos for interested customers. Interested customers can get request a demo by visiting our website,” continues Akshay. They have also put an offline lamination and slitting machine to meet customer requirements. Though they are conducting individual demos only to a specific customer base, the demos are scheduled as per the customers’ time convenience.

sheetfed offset, resulting in excellent print quality. “Miyakoshi has the longest repeat size in its category which again helps increase the productivity by almost 1.5 times. As the cycle speed of the press does not get affected based on the repeat lengths, the productivity achievable on MLP series is unmatchable. There are many other features which are to be experienced first hand to understand fully why Miyakoshi stands apart and is the best in its class,” explains Akshay.

Miyakoshi as a hybrid advanced printing solution vs. as an entry level solution

solution for short and medium runs whereas with the rising demand for ultra short runs and availability of Miyakoshi digital presses in India now, our focus will be on promoting digital inkjet as-well,” reveals Akshay.

Miyakoshi hybrid stands apart from others “Although there are economically lucrative options available to choose from, there is a huge difference in technology and the quality of the (Miyakoshi) product in offer,” states Akshay. “The mechanisms, structure and the stability of the press is incomparable – both Chinese and other options available in the industry. The sophistication of the design, sturdy structure and highly accurate

18

November 2020

paper transport mechanism creates the base for this high speed semi rotary press. The ingenious S-type dual roller step back mechanism coupled with the loop box eliminates inertia which is developed due to the front back paper movement which in turn ensures highly stable paper transport and tension control,” he adds. Apart from this, Miyakoshi MLP is a full servo press consisting of 4 servo motors per unit, which again highlights the level of sophistication of the press. Unlike the concept of acquiring and assembling, Miyakoshi Presses as a whole are manufactured in-house, keeping strict quality checks and control in the press development. The offset printing unit comes with a unit configuration similar to that of a

“Miyakoshi MLP series is the most versatile semi rotary press in the world currently. On a standard configuration any substrate ranging between 70 microns - 300 microns can be easily run, however the option of opting for printing on substrate range of 15 microns - 300 microns is also available. MLP is the perfect solution for Printing high quality wine and liquor labels, food and beverage labels, cosmetic labels and also other labels in general,” emphasizes Akshay. However, keeping the price sensitive nature of our market, Miyakoshi had also developed a new entry level model. This model, Miyakoshi MEL – targeting entry level customers, was supposed to be introduced at Drupa 2020.

MLP series – the most versatile semi-rotary press in the market According to Akshay, the MLP series is the most versatile semi-rotary press in the market. “Coupled with its versatility, MLP series are the fastest semi-rotary presses in the world matching Flexo speeds with the highest print speed being 300 Impressions per minute (121.9 meters/min). On our demo centre press we have already tested varied substrates such as BOPP, LDPE, IML, PET, Blister Foils, speciality papers, etc. Now, that is fast for a semi rotary press. And it is to be noted that these are not just rated speeds of the press; customers actually produce constantly at the mentioned speed. Set-up time is another major additional advantage for MLP series when compared to a Flexo. Set-up times are much faster when compared to a Flexo press and everything on MLP presses is electronically controlled and does not require any tooling change. A customer saves around half an hour per job in set up time alone when compared with

pressideas/ plc

Flexo. Wastage is similar to what a Flexo press incurs,” says Akshay.

speed of 200 impressions per minute (71.1 meters/min).

Since these presses are full servo, changeovers are very quick. The capability of parallel processing makes changeover very efficient and saves a lot of time for the convertors.

There are different models to choose from based on the production speeds • MEL: 150 impressions per minute (50 m/min) • MLP C: 200 impressions per minute (81.1 m/min) • MLP C (opt): 250 impressions per minute (101.6 m/min) (Installed at Pragati Pack, Hyderabad) • MLP H: 300 impressions per minute (121.9 m/min)

The Multiwave LED-UV system installed on the demo machine is from UV Energy, another company represented by Provin in India. The system allows to use both conventional UV inks and LED-UV inks on the same system without any difficulties. “The flexibility of using conventional UV inks and enjoying all the benefits of a LED-UV system such lower power consumption, not heat generation, no ozone, chip life of more than 25,000 hours provides an edge over others,” says Akshay. The model installed at the demo centre is MLP 13 C which is a 13 inch model with a

Unfortunately, in our industry, a mindset has been created if it is labels it is Flexo and now for short runs, the trend is for Inkjet presses. The important point being missed out is that all these technologies are there to complement each other and are not meant to be compared. Flexo presses are meant for longer run jobs, offset (hybrid) presses for shorter to medium runs and digital for ultra short runs. It is a must for a label conversion house to have a complement of all the three technologies in-house to cater to the varied customer needs. One cannot expect to purchase a machine and do all sorts of jobs on a single press. To maximise productivity and profits all these technologies are required to work in harmony.”

After sales and service support is provided directly by Provin with their team of trained and highly skilled engineers placed across India.

“The cost of ownership of Japanese presses in usually on the lower side. Same is the case with Miyakoshi also. The only long term financial implication with Miyakoshi presses is that it will earn you more money than other presses,” he concludes.

Wrapping up on the technology and process suitability for label printers, Akshay makes these concluding remarks, “Every technology has its own merits and demerits.

For the printing design and decoration of the speciality glass, AGI glaspac will evaluate engaging with Indian start-ups that can meet the international standards of printing and decoration. The company has been serving its customers in the liquor, wine, food, chemical and pharma industry worldwide with commercial and Type1 glass quality for over 40 years. The addition of clear speciality glass to its portfolio will cater to anew customer segment. Rajesh Khosla, President & CEO of AGI glaspac, said,

“The pandemic has resulted in geopolitical disengagement with certain countries. It will leave the glass industry with a huge void and a shortfall of suppliers or importers in the future. We believe that it is a huge opportunity for Indian manufacturers and start-ups for various industries to increase exports and reduce imports. It is a golden opportunity to raise the bar in the international markets for the ‘Made-in-India’ products.AGI glaspac’s entry in the new segment of manufacturing speciality glass is a strategic decision. It will allow us to cater to the much-expected rise in the global demand after the pandemic subsides.” The first phase of investment of INR 220 crores will go towards four levels of expenses – civil construction of the plant, machinery and a new furnace, utilities and finally new team for the development of the newly launched ‘AGI Speciality-Glas Division.’ The company will engage more than 4600 people, including direct and indirect employees. The total strength of the team is 14,700, and it will be 19,300 by the end of 2022.

The flexible Packaging market is constantly evolving and is looking for revolutionary solutions in areas of flexibility, quality, speed and safety. Amongst these, flexibility of the machine is of utmost importance because of the changing dynamics of the market. Considering flexible packaging is easier to print as compared to other materials and offers a unique variety of shapes, sizes and formats, it allows brands owners to work on added value solutions and hit the target consumers with greater precision. Additionally, prints runs are becoming shorter due to frequent changes in pack, products are getting increasingly personalised and reduction in time-to-market makes speed a crucial

Asahi’s China Technical Center installs Esko plate imaging solutions Asahi Photoproducts and Esko join forces to educate Chinese market on Flexo Platemaking in harmony with the environment.

Asahi Photoproducts has extended its relationship with Esko through an agreement to install Esko plate imaging solutions in the Asahi Tech Center in Suzhou, near Shanghai. The agreement, which was entered into during All-in-Print China, will result in the installation of an Esko CDI Spark 4260 and an XPS Crystal 5080 in the Center. These high-end plate imaging solutions are supported by an Asahi AWP 230W plate processor using Asahi AWP CleanPrint waterwashable plates to complete a balanced flexographic platemaking solution in harmony with the environment, delivering high quality for China’s demanding flexo customers. “Asahi Photoproducts has worked together with Esko in China for a decade and this agreement takes the relationship to a new level in our ability to serve the rapidly evolving flexographic market in China,” said Yuji Suzuki, Asahi’s Senior Manager of Customer Technical Service. Suzuki points out that high-end print quality is increasingly required in China, and many repro houses in the region still have difficulty making plates that deliver the best print quality. “One thing we will be doing in our Tech Center with the new equipment,” he says, “is creating test plates for potential customers so they can see for themselves that we can deliver the quality they need. We will also use the facility to do training and seminars for customers and potential customers.”

bring the latest state-of-the-art flexographic solutions to this region”. CleanPrint flexographic plates from Asahi Photoproducts have been specifically engineered to transfer all remaining ink to the printed substrate, reducing makeready time and press cleaning stops while delivering exceptional quality. AWP CleanPrint waterwashable plates emit fewer VOCs in prepress as they don´t use solvents in the washout process. Studies show that CleanPrint waterwashable plates have the smallest cradleto-grave carbon footprint when compared to solvent or thermal solutions. Less makeready

waste and waste due to plate cleaning press stops brings the process even more in balance with the environment. And more efficient throughput means less energy consumption. “In the Tech Center implementation,” Suzuki added, “we will also be working with a third party solution that completely eliminates wastewater from plate processing, separating out solids in a cake form that can be easily disposed of or incinerated, and capturing potable water. This will add even further to accelerate our AWP promotion into the Chines market.

Esko will also have access to the Tech Center, offering the possibility to Asahi’s customers to learn more about how the Esko plate imaging system functions with Asahi’s AWPTMCleanPrint water-washable plates. “We are pleased to continue to grow our partnership with Asahi, especially in the highly competitive Chinese market,” said Rocky Zhou, General Manager for Esko in Shanghai. “The solutions being installed at the Asahi Tech Center will benefit both of our businesses as we work to continue to

Catena+ wins New Innovation Award Flint Group’s Jacky Chen gives a presentation on the ThermoFlexX Catena+ Inline Plate Making System. The CI Flexo Tech Technology Innovation Award was established in 2019. It’s the first such award to encompass the entire flexo industry in China. The aim is “to discover, promote, encourage and commend innovative technologies in the flexo printing industry”. On 6th November a committee comprised of 46 flexo experts from leading printers, brandowners, universities, trade magazines and technology suppliers judged the finalists in the 2020 CI Flexo Tech Technology Innovation Award. At a well-attended event (more than 300 attendees), Flint Group’s Jacky Chen gave a presentation on the ThermoFlexX Catena+ Inline Plate Making System before gaining the award. Catena is a modular concept of individual units that can build up to a fully in-line solvent-chemistry flexo plate making system. A ThermoFlexX imager, Catena-E (LED exposure) and Catena-WDLS (washer, dryer and light-finisher) join together with robotic transport units forming Catena+ for full automation. With Catena+ an operator need only place the plate on the imager loading tray and remove the cover-sheet. The full plate making process thereafter is completed without further human intervention. Productivity and consistency are naturally increased whilst the risk of damage through operator handling is eliminated. Up to 10 flexo plates initiated during a working shift can be fully finished without supervision, for example, after a shift is finished and the factory is closed. Catena units take up to 50 x 80” (1270 x

2032mm) plates and links with ThermoFlexX 80 or 60 imagers. Nevertheless the footprint of Catena+ is only 13 metres (43 feet), including the ThermoFlexX imager. A smaller Catena range 48 x 35” (1200 x 900mm) is planned for the first half of 2021. ThermoFlexX imagers and Catena units are designed and built by Xeikon Prepress, Ypres, Belgium. Christophe Lievens, Sales & Marketing Director says, “ We’re very proud to win this award courtesy of so many peers in our field. We’re fully aware of the demand for the highest quality of flexo print in China. This is a very exciting time for us as Catena systems are our first project 100% combining our equipment design knowledge with Flint Flexographic plate making and flexo print expertise. Development has been a total partnership and we believe the result is a product portfolio of ThermoFlexX and Catena equipment with flexo plates that exactly fits the market-place.” Along with innovative hardware, Catena systems also offer state of the art software utilities. Catena Cockpit provides a highly visible status report, via ‘airport style’ screens, showing all plates, their progress and expected time of completion. Also, supervisors can access information on their own devices and change queue priorities. ThermoFlexX ProServX provides a cloudbased, constant monitoring service of all key components throughout the range. A brand-new level of predictive maintenance with on-line support is available. The need for physical service-interventions is minimised. All critical information such as motor current, controllers, operating conditions and working temperatures are monitored. This information can be stored and made available for Plate Passport total QC records. Several full Catena+ systems have been inevitably delayed a little by the Covid crisis but remain on course for delivery before the end of 2020. Installations will take place in January 2021 and testimony from customers available after that. In the meantime there is interesting feedback to share from the first beta installation: One of the beta test sites

for Catena-W and Catena-DL was nearby in Roeselare, Belgium. Miller-Graphics is a Brand Management, Repro and Flexo Platemaking company specializing in Flexible Packaging, Paper & Foil, Corrugated and Labels. Site Manager Stefaan Herman informs, “We have a great deal of experience and pride ourselves on keeping pace with technical innovations. Choosing the right equipment is vital to keep our business ahead. We are always interested in ThermoFlexX developments and happy to take the opportunity to be the first customer installation (of the washer and dryer). Of course we’d had the presentations, design goals etc. and knew what to expect. The equipment looks impressive in our modern production facility. Sometimes though, there are unexpected bonuses that can be both important and satisfying. For example we’ve found the Catena-W pin-bar system to be very useful. This avoids the need for punching the plate by using a spiked clamp system. Not only does this save a step, it also means there’s no polymer residue from the punch that can sometimes stick on the plate. Furthermore, the distance required is less so saves us a small amount of plate material. Rather than a drive chain that passes through the solvent, Catena-W uses a leadscrew that’s outside the liquid, this saves a lot of maintenance. For the environment in our plate room we notice that internal covers limit the solvent with almost no smell discernable in the room. The systems are noticeably quieter too. Overall we believe that ThermoFlexX has definitely brought a fresh and valuable approach to our business (flexo plate making).”

PERI builds the first 3D-printed apartment building in Germany The largest printed apartment building in Europe is proof that 3D construction printing is also suitable for the construction of large dwelling units.

The BOD2 (printer) has been certified in such a way that it is possible to carry out work within the printing area while printing is in progress. This means that manual work, such as the installation of empty pipes and connections, can be easily integrated into the printing process.

Key Notes : > Building consisting of 5 apartments across 3 floors with approx. 380 square metres of living space constructed using a 3D construction printer. > On this project, the printing process is expected to take six weeks. > The 5-in-a-block apartment building with around 380 square metres of living space will be the largest printed residential building in Europe.

36

November 2020

PERI GmbH has set about printing another residential building using a 3D construction printer, this time in Wallenhausen, Bavaria. At the end of September 2020, the family-owned company announced that work had begun on Germany’s first printed residential house in Beckum, North Rhine-Westphalia. Only two months later, work has begun on the next residential building to make use of 3D construction printing technology. Upon completion, the 5-in-a-block apartment building with around 380 square metres of living space will be the largest printed residential building in Europe. On this project, the printing process is expected to take six weeks.

The client on this apartment building project is Michael Rupp Bauunternehmung GmbH, which will specialise in the 3D sector from 2021 onwards through its newly founded subsidiary Rupp Gebäudedruck.

“With the project in Wallenhausen, we are seeing the PERI 3D construction printing team take the next important step. At the same time, PERI is consolidating its position as a leading company in the field of 3D construction printing,” says Thomas Imbacher, Managing Director Marketing & Innovation at PERI Group. “By printing the first apartment building in Germany, we are demonstrating that this new construction technology can also be used to print large-scale dwelling units. In terms of 3D construction printing, we are opening up additional areas of application on an entirely new level.”

His brother Sebastian, also a managing director at the family-owned company, adds: “At the same time, we believe that this new technology has enormous potential for the future, and we want to help shape that future. Despite the traditional nature of our craft, we are also innovative and do not shy away from new challenges – quite the opposite in fact.”

“Our family-owned company has enjoyed 25 years of success in the industry and has an array of satisfied customers in the region. This means that we have the edge in terms of knowledge and can draw on a wealth of experience as we enter the 3D construction printing market,” says Fabian Rupp, Managing Director of Rupp Gebäudedruck.

The planning architect is the architectural firm Mühlich, Fink & Partner BDA from Ulm. The materials used to produce the printable concrete are being sourced from HeidelbergCement. The mixing

pressideas/ signage

technology used has been sourced from m-tec mathis technik gmbh. The engineering office Schießl Gehlen Sodeikat assisted with the preparation work for the warrant. The Technical University of Munich planned and carried out the relevant approval tests. The residential building in Wallenhausen has a full-length basement and, upon completion, will consist of five apartments across three floors with around 380 square metres of living space. This is not a research or demonstration project. Once construction is complete, the apartments will be rented out in the usual manner. Only one of the apartments will be used as a show apartment. PERI is using the gantry printer BOD2 for this construction printing project in Wallenhausen. The system has a print head that moves about 3 axes on a securely installed metallic frame. The benefit here is that the printer can move along its frame to any position within the construction and only needs to be calibrated once. This saves time and cuts costs. During the printing process, the printer takes into account the pipes and connections for water, electricity, etc. that are to be laid at a later time. The BOD2 has been certified in such a way that it is possible to carry out work within the printing area while printing is in progress. This means that manual work, such as the installation of empty pipes and connections, can be easily integrated into the

printing process. The “i.tech 3D” material that is being used to print the building in Wallenhausen was developed by HeidelbergCement specifically for 3D printing. “The properties of i.tech3D are tailored to the specific requirements of 3D construction printing using concrete,” says Dr. Jennifer Scheydt, Head of Engineering & Innovation at HeidelbergCement. “Our material has excellent pumping and extruding characteristics and works perfectly with the BOD2 printer.” Two operators are required to run the printer. The print head and the print results are monitored by a camera. With a speed of 1

m/s, the BOD2 is currently the fastest 3D construction printer available on the market. The BOD2 only takes around five minutes to complete 1m² of a double-skin wall. With sales of € 1,685 million in 2019, PERI is one of the leading manufacturers and suppliers of formwork and scaffold systems in the world. The family-owned company, with its headquarters in Weissenhorn (Germany), a workforce of more than 9,500 employees, more than 60 subsidiaries and well over 160 warehouse locations, provides its clients with innovative system equipment and comprehensive services relating to all aspects of formwork and scaffolding technology.

Mimaki creates new, improved RIP Rasterlink7 with Harlequin RasterLink7 improves performance, enhances quality and introduces new features such as VDP for many applications.

Global Graphics Software has licensed the Harlequin RIP to Mimaki Engineering, manufacturer of wide-format inkjet printers, cutting plotters, and 3D modeling machines, to create the new RIP software RasterLink7 that will be available with Mimaki printers worldwide from December 2020. Mimaki printers are used by sign and graphics, textile and apparel, and industrial printing professionals around the globe. RasterLink7 improves performance and enhances quality as well as introducing new features such as variable data printing for applications such as sports apparel, card printing, name tags stickers and labels. Shipments are expected to be in the region of 10,000 Units a year. RasterLink7 was announced by Mimaki on 4 November at the launch of their new JV100160 and UJV100-160 presses for sign and graphics. “Our objective in choosing Harlequin as the core of our genuine Mimaki RIP is to improve the performance of our products,” says Satoshi Kaneko, General Manager of software design department, Mimaki Engineering. “Customers will see that the RIP processing time for PDF files is considerably shortened. There are significant quality improvements too; PDF transparency

processes correctly and we have found that the expression of thin lines is improved.” Global Graphics’ local office in Tokyo provided responsive technical support to Mimaki. They worked closely with Mimaki engineers in a number of areas to introduce unique functionality for Mimaki customers. These included multi-layer printing, the replacement of colors in graduated tints, exporting contours for cutters, and the addition of texts and graphics to submitted jobs for variable data printing. The variable data feature was implemented using the dynamic overlays in Harlequin which are specifically designed for those printing applications that require a simple form of VDP support. It combines a single background page with overlay graphics, such as text and images, that are selected

using data from a file supplied in CSV format. Harlequin is a Raster Image Processor, or RIP. A RIP is a tool for converting a page description language such as PostScript or PDF into a format that a printing device such as an inkjet printhead, toner marking engine or laser platesetter can understand. The format that it outputs may be a raster file format such as TIFF, or it may be a stream of raster data that is delivered more or less directly to the printing device. The exact format delivered may be tuned for each integration.

FESPA Global Print Expo 2021 is attracting a growing interest Exhibitor community lines up for FESPA Global Print Expo 2021 in Amsterdam. FESPA Global Print Expo and European Sign Expo 2021 (9-12 March 2021, RAI Amsterdam, The Netherlands) are attracting a growing line-up of exhibitors, all enthusiastic to engage with customers and prospects face-to-face after a year reliant on digital platforms to communicate and share product news. The floor plan for the co-located events is building out steadily, with 200+ exhibiting companies already committed to participating in Spring next year and many more in active discussions. The expanding exhibitor list includes many prominent names in screen, digital wide format and textile print, representing the entire production workflow from output technologies and workflow tools to media and inks. FESPA CEO Neil Felton comments: “Since we opened the dialogue with our exhibitors about the Spring 2021 events, we’ve heard a consistent message: they can’t wait to be at a live FESPA event again, interacting in person with people that have an appetite to learn, be inspired and make considered investments to drive their businesses forward out of the current crisis. They see the event as a vital springboard to the sector’s sustained recovery.” “From the visitor’s perspective, senior decision-makers in speciality print and signage businesses are telling us that they want the opportunity to see the latest products and solutions close up, to compare and contrast what’s on offer from different vendors under one roof, and to be inspired again by getting away from a computer screen and interacting with product experts and industry peers in the real world. The virtual alternatives just don’t meet their needs.”

ONYX Graphic; and consumables from suppliers including CHT Group, Zhuhai PrintRite and STS Inks. Signage professionals will also be able to see the latest innovations in non-printed signage, with confirmed exhibitors including CADlink Technology Corp, Efka Led Frames B.V. and LEDIT YAKI. Folker Stachetzki, Marketing Manager at Brother, the Gold Sponsor for FESPA Global Print Expo 2021, comments on the company’s confidence in the event: “FESPA is the most important trade fair for us to present our new products live to a wide audience. The cancellation of the trade fair in 2020, as well as all other restrictions caused by the pandemic, were tough for us, as probably for almost everyone. We’re therefore looking forward to FESPA 2021,

to meet interested visitors, to exchange experiences with other exhibitors, and to be able to show our new direct-to-garment printer and other innovations from Brother in front of the public again.” Neil Felton concludes: “We’re delighted to see the positive appetite from both exhibitors and visitors to be back at a FESPA event, affirming the role we play in connecting this global speciality printing and sign-making community. In our capacity as the event organiser, we’re working hard to create a COVID-secure environment for both parties to do business in, drawing on the expertise and best practices of our team, the RAI Amsterdam venue, our specialist independent contractors and the wider event industry.”

Visitors to the FESPA exhibition in March will see latest hardware innovations from companies including Agfa, Brother, Canon, d.gen, Durst, Polyprint DTG, Zund, Summa and swissQprint; substrates from suppliers including 3A Composites, Ahlstrom Munksjö, Avery Dennison and Hexis; workflow and colour management software from vendors including Barbieri, Caldera, OneVision and
