When Greg Verlander’s father came home from rehab after having a stroke, he was upset to find a hospital bed in his room. The bed’s institutional appearance made him feel unhappy and unhealthy, his son said. Verlander never forgot that, and when he learned of a family friend who had constructed a headboard and footboard for a hospital bed, he wanted to make them available to others. Today, TenderCare Beds offers the products online in five finishes. “I just wanted to change people’s environment,” Verlander said.

Other companies, too, have started selling headboards, bed skirts and other accessories designed to help hospital beds look less institutional. Interior designer Kelee Katillac of Kansas City, Missouri, specializes in remaking rooms for people who need hospital beds or medical equipment. “As people leave the hospital sooner, there’s a greater need,” she said. Upgrades to home hospital beds are just part of a new focus on making beds better in general — more stylish and comfortable for a wide range of activities beyond sleeping. There are beds you can adjust to make it easier to work on a laptop, beds that keep you cool at night and beds that charge

Pedestal sinks offer perches with panache by Kim CooK

Associated Press Writer

If you’ve got a powder room, chances are there’s a pedestal sink in it. The lavatory perches have long been the go-to option for small bathrooms, and even for full-size spaces where a less imposing fixture is desired. The simple bowl-on-a-stick concept has been given some imaginative rethinking in recent bath collections, and some are downright statement pieces. Designers are experimenting with materials like stone, metal and wood, and coming up with interesting textural compositions. Some pedestal sinks resemble works of art, with elaborate painted motifs, or sculptural silhouettes. Kallista’s Papion pedestal sink has a bow-tie silhouette; in black with a white sink, it’s got a men’s dress-wear look, and in solid white, its spare modernity is no less elegant. Barbara Barry’s transitionalstyle Tuxedo sink for Kallista features an ample sink surround for soaps and hand towels. (www.kallista.com) Those looking for a more traditional style might appreciate Kohler’s Prairie Flowers or English Trellis pedestal sinks. Both have a painted floral pattern that would look pretty in a garden-themed powder room or girls’ bathroom. (www.kohler.com)

Totem trend The totem shape is emerging as a trend. In some, the sink and base become one, so the fixture resembles a ceramic bongo drum; Hastings Tile & Bath has an attractive one that comes in a range of finishes, including metallics and patterns. Also at Hastings, a striking Tulip pedestal, available in Ferrari red, or gold or silver leaf. (www. stoneforest.com) Luxury bath company Maison Valentina used the effect of a rock slab cracking after being frozen to create the Lapiaz pedestal sink. A column of mirrored aluminum is run through with a sliver of burnished gold lacquer, and a free-form, gold-toned aluminum sink rests on top. The studio’s Newton pedestal sink is crafted of hand-cast brass spheres that are forged and stacked, then given a coat of inky black lacquer; a gold sink nestles inside the structure like a celestial bird bath. (www.maisonvalentina.net) Inbani’s Tambo integrates the washbasin into a wallmounted column, and then there’s a portable, recessed storage base with one or two shelves that can be had in a range of colors, creating a sleek, minimalist fixture. (www.waterworks.com; www. urbanarchaeology.com) Storage can be an issue with these vanity-less sinks, but Seattle-based professional organizer Annie Traurig has some suggestions. Etageres, slanted ladders and even dressers can do the job of stowing toiletries and other supplies, while adding personality. No room on the floor? A little vertical space may be all you need; just get creative. “Start by installing small floating wall shelves,” says Traurig. “I’m telling you, you’ll marvel at the won-

ders of a small slab of wood screwed onto your wall.” Ronbow’s Pebble sink, designed by French designer Ora Ito, doesn’t have a base but mounts to the wall, along with matching mirrors — all crafted in a free-form, organic pebble shape with a wood-like finish and an integrated, solid-surface white sink. (www. ronbow.com) Finally, for the truly adventurous bathroom, there’s Falper’s Wing sink, designed by Federico Lombardi. It’s another with no base, but it doesn’t need one. Two swoops of ceramic on both sides of the sink resemble a crane’s expansive wings, and the result is a dramatic work of functional wall art. (www. falper.it)

Continued from page 1 brewing space also makes it easier for friends to join you in preparing or sampling the beer, he said. “Beer is a social beverage. Having a space to bring your friends in to share the experience — that’s a major incentive,” Glass said. Dedicated brew spaces are a popular topic on the association’s website, Glass said. “People are constantly posting pictures of things that they’ve built,” he said. “If you’re a homebrewer, to some degree you’re a do-it-yourselfer.”

Pinterest sees jump On the online photosharing forum Pinterest, the number of users saving “brew room” ideas jumped 200 percent during the first six months of this year, according to a Pinterest spokeswoman, Lara Levin. A home brewery doesn’t require a lot of space, but should include a water source, ventilation, drainage and a heat source, Glass said. Water is needed for the beer and also for cleaning the equipment. “A big part of brewing is spent cleaning,”

Glass said. “Everything has to be clean.” A hood or source of ventilation is necessary to remove the water vapor that forms during the boiling stages of beer-making. A floor drain is helpful for spills and general cleanup. And for many brewers, creating a brew room means moving from a propane setup — commonly used outdoors or in garages — to an electric one, Glass said. It’s not safe to brew indoors with propane. In recent years, a growing number of companies have begun to manufacture electric brewing systems for indoor use, he said. Many entail little engineering to set up, but they often require a higher voltage socket, similar to a clothes dryer. “The movement from gas to electric has been the biggest game changer” in the industry, said Kal Wallner, an electrical engineer who designed a system that he sells online at www.theelectricbrewery.com . With an electric system, “you can brew indoors in your flipflops,” he said, an important consideration for the brewer from Ottawa, Canada. A dedicated space makes brewing more convenient, said Wallner. “Everything is at your fingertips. I know what is where,” he said. “I

RAISING EXPECTATIONS

Increasing output Dan Hoffman, who started making beer with friends about five years ago, estimates they make about 40 batches a year now — roughly six times more than they did before he added a brewery to his basement in Shorewood, Illinois. He spent about $2,500 on the project. Having a brew room also improved the beer’s taste, he said, because the equipment he uses now regulates the temperature. “It really takes it to the next level,” he said. During the basement renovation, Hoffman also added a bar for enjoying the fruits of his labor. The Swamp Bar Brewery, as the space has been dubbed, has a bayou theme. It features corrugated metal walls and a beer tap decorated with alligator claws. Visitors to his home find the bar and brewery “a real point of interest,” Hoffman said. Clemens agrees that brew rooms “get a lot of attention.” He retrofitted one into the basement of his old house, and recently worked with a contractor to add one in unfinished space in his new house. “You’d think people would be more interested in the home theater room,” but everyone wants to see where the beer gets made, he said.

Black is the new black when it comes to lighting. According to the American Lighting Association (ALA), many of the latest and most versatile light fixtures are trending towards black finishes, often mixed with other colors and metals. The right light enhances any home, and light fixtures that are black can add a new element of sophistication and function, which is why many homeowners are opting for black when choosing interior as well as exterior fixtures. “Throughout history, the color black has played an important role in architecture and interior design,” says Joe Rey-Barreau, AIA, IESNA, associate professor at the University of Kentucky’s School of Interior Design. The neutral nature of black “has been a consistent design element that can blend and merge easily with traditional, transitional and modern styles,” says ReyBarreau, who also serves as education consultant to the ALA. “Used as the primary color in interior or exterior lighting fixtures, black brings a sophistication that provides a timeless quality and transcends any specific style,” he adds. Replacing all existing light fixtures is not always feasible, but selecting several outdated fixtures to change and upgrade gives any room an instant lift. Using black fixtures is an easy way to ensure that old and new lighting elements meld together without creat-

ing a disjointed appearance. Consider the elements of your existing fixtures, and add a new one that is black or partly black in color, and that reflects elements of the current lighting scheme.

Black and metallic Try a black fixture paired with metallic finishes such as polished brass, nickel or brushed pewter; or consider a two-tone look that combines black with another color to complement the room or outdoor space. Black fixtures continue to gain popularity in outdoor lighting as well. “There’s a slow shift from brown asphalt roofs to black,” says Jeff Dross, corporate director of education and industry trends for Kichler Lighting. “We’re moving from beige siding to dove gray or light gray siding, and the stone is going from a brown to a grayer tone. Because of that shift, the color black actually looks a lot nicer. It looks much more in concert with the rest of the architecture,” he says. A new video from the ALA features more design tips about how to make the most of black lighting fixtures. To view the video, go to LightingDesignVideos.com. Whether you want to give your interior a facelift, or just try something different, it’s a perfect time to take an old, outdated light fixture from drab to fab. Aesthetics One major factor driving soapstone’s appeal is shifting aesthetic trends. While designers and homeowners have been fascinated by the bright, wide range of colors and bold patterns that could be discovered in natural stone, people are coming back to a tonal, more muted palette, according to Schrenk. Schrenk sees more designers working with textures within a similar palette of color and playing up the tactile qualities of materials and patterns within that limited palette. “This is where soapstone plays well in pairing with these different finishes,” he said. “It tends to blend into its space and become more integrated in the whole design instead of being a separate, individual entity.” Another aesthetic benefit of soapstone is that multiple tonalities can be achieved depending on the finishing techniques. “It may be a cool, blue-gray color when left in its natural honed state or a deep, sultry black when waxed or enhanced,” Schrenk said. “You

Move over, marble and granite. There’s a new, old stone that’s coming back into vogue. After first coming into use 5,000 years ago, soapstone is once again becoming a “goto” material for kitchen and bath designs, indoor and outdoor living spaces and more. There are three primary reasons for the revived interest in soapstone, according to Steven Schrenk, digital media director and design consultant at Polycor, who has been working with natural stone for 22 years.

“No matter how you slice it, there are 101 ways to style soapstone; whereas with some other materials, there are more limitations,” Schrenk said. Because of the stone’s ability to absorb and radiate heat, it can be used for unique items, such as pizza ovens and foot warmers, says Glenn Bowman, owner of Vermont Soapstone. He has also seen soapstone used in a variety of everyday applications, both indoors and outdoors, including tiles, flooring, backsplashes, sinks and a variety of custom stonework. five ways you can make home safer Courtesy of Metro Creative Graphics

Injuries that occur around the home contribute to millions of medical visits and tens of thousands of fatalities each year. Falls account for the largest percentage of home accidents, with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reporting that around 30,000 fall-related fatalities occur each year in the United States. Many home accidents are entirely preventable when proper caution is exercised. As homeowners prepare for home-improvement projects, improving safety inside and outside the home should be a priority. 1. Improve lighting One of the easiest ways to reduce the risk of falls is to improve lighting around the home. The National Institutes of Health state that adequate lighting is important at entrances to the home, stairways, hallways, and other frequently traversed areas. Make sure lighting fixtures are using the highest wattage light bulb allowed. Artificial lighting sources become even more vital in fall and autumn, when natural light is less abundant in a home. In addition, install lighting outdoors by the front door, over the garage and where garbage pails are stored to facilitate safe passage. 2. Eliminate slick surfaces Improving traction around the house also can minimize falls. Throw rugs and runners can be made more secure with nonslip rubber backings. Bath rugs can reduce slipping on wet surfaces in the bathroom. Also, nonslip mats can be used inside of showers and bathtubs. Use shoe trays to reduce puddling from melting snow or rain runoff in entryways. Mop up spills quickly, and consider the use of matte- or textured-finished flooring to improve stability underfoot. Promptly remove snow and ice from driveways and walkways. For those who live in cold climates, heated concrete can help melt precipitation before it accumulates. 3. Make needed repairs Repair loose floorboards and pull carpet taut if it has started to stretch out. Address cracks outdoors and ensure that patio stones, bricks and pavers are secure and

level to reduce tripping hazards. Fix areas of the landscape where water may pool and freeze, creating potential hazards. 4. Declutter all spaces Remove unnecessary items and furniture from rooms to free up more space to get around. Be sure there are no obstructions in walkways, entryways and near doors. Keep staircases clear at all times. 5. Invest in assistive devices Handrails, grab bars, nonslip stair treads, and many other devices can make homes safer for people of all ages and abilities. Outfit cabinets and closets with organizers that put frequently used items within easy reach. A sturdy step stool can reduce the risk of injury while reaching for items stored on high shelves. Taking measures to reduce the risk of falling around the home is a worthwhile home improvement project.

Watch for signs of roof trouble Courtesy of Metro Creative Graphics

With regard to home repairs, homeowners may be able to delay some projects until the weather permits or they find room in their budgets. But other areas, including the roof, may demand immediate action. Few homeowners give the roofs of their homes much thought until a problem arises. But learning to recognize potential indicators of roof trouble can help homeowners prevent potentially drastic situations down the road. • Light: Homeowners with attics in their homes can inspect the ceilings inside the attic for signs of holes or leaks. Light peering through the top of the house indicates a hole or leak, as do stains or streaks on the ceiling. • Worn shingles: Shingles should lie flat against the roof, so any that appear to be buckling or turning up are damaged and in need of repair. A single damaged shingle does not require a full roof replacement, but inspect all the shingles nonetheless. Another indicator of shingle problems can be found when cleaning downspouts or gutters. If the gutters and downspouts contain lots of shingle granules, the roof may soon need to be replaced. • Moss: Moss on a rooftop may give a home character, but that added character is costly. Shady areas of a roof can be susceptible to the growth of moss and fungi because moisture can be trapped in such areas. If possible, remove moss

Get most bang for buck from kitchen remodeling Courtesy of Metro Creative Graphics

Homeowners looking to renovate often see room for improvement in their kitchens and bathrooms. The National Association of Home Builder’s Remodeling Market Index Survey, which measures conditions in the remodeling market, indicates that, in 2015, the two most common remodeling jobs were bathroom remodels (81 percent) and kitchen remodels (79 percent). According to HGTV and Statistics Brain, a new kitchen remodel for a kitchen measuring 12 by 12 feet may cost homeowners anywhere from $17,000 to $37,000. Before investing so much into their remodeling projects, homeowners should think carefully about the features that will improve their time spent at home. When planning a kitchen renovation, homeowners may want to consider the following upgrades to make the room more enjoyable while improving its functionality.

find fresh ways to use hardwood in home Courtesy of Brandpoint

Hardwood may be one of the oldest building materials known to man, yet architects, designers and homeowners are always finding fresh ways to use it in the modern home. What’s the appeal? Flexibility and variety, for starters. “We’re constantly delighted to see how traditional woods like oak and walnut are being employed with renewed flair and imagination,” says Linda Jovanovich, of the American Hardwood Information Center, www. hardwoodinfo.com. “Subtle tweaks can make something familiar, look innovative. The current trend is to take a classic hardwood application, like paneling or flooring, and give it a stylish, up-to-the-minute twist. Here’s a look at what’s trending.”

wide-plank hardwood flooring. Traditional plank widths, ranging from 21⁄4 to 31⁄2 inches, are still popular. But today’s homeowners often ask for widths between 5 and 7 inches, and there is even demand for up to 10 or 12 inches. “Wider floorboards can make a space look larger and more modern,” says Melissa Morgan of M Interiors in San Antonio, Texas, who has used the generously proportioned planks in traditional and contemporary homes. “With fewer seams, these floors can be treated like a canvas: ebonized oak or walnut for a sleek, dark look; light woods like ash or maple for a chic, urban vibe; weathered-gray tones for a slightly rustic affect - the possibilities are endless.”

“Simple poplar beadboard, painted white or with a light natural stain, looks crisp and airy overhead, adding visual interest while remaining quiet and unassuming,” says Rebecca Ascher, Ascher Davis Architects in New York and Newport, Rhode Island. “For a more assertive affect, I might specify tongue-andgroove walnut or hickory, characterful woods that provide a degree of drama. For that reason, they’re best reserved for large, high-ceilinged rooms that are not easily overwhelmed. In smaller, lower spaces, a ceiling with too much personality can feel oppressive.”

Mix and match

ple — create a striking effect that can work well in both traditional and contemporary settings. This is particularly true in kitchens, where a favorite configuration features upper cabinetry in a light-color wood such as birch, and lower cabinetry in a dark-color wood like cherry. The result is a space that has strong visual interest, and is light and airy, yet solidly grounded.

Gray stains, finishes Gray is a classic “neutral” that never truly goes out of fashion. It’s currently one of the most popular colors, ranging from pale smoke to deep charcoal, showing up in hardwood flooring, paneling and cabinetry. “Whether light or dark, gray stains bring out any wood’s natural grain and texture,” says New York interior designer Laura Bohn. “Grays are versatile and timeless quiet and soothing colors that recede

into the background without losing personality or becoming faceless. That’s why they work in any style décor, yet always look modern.”

Distressed hardwoods Homeowners drawn to the popular look of weather-beaten rustic and elegantly timeworn are turning to distressed hardwoods — a new product to which scrapes, nail holes, notches, saw marks and other signs of wear and tear have been carefully applied, often by hand. Manufacturers are able to reproduce convincing facsimiles of anything from the burnished walnut floorboards of an 18th century salon to the rugged oak-plank siding of a 19th century Pennsylvania barn. It’s a distinctive look that offers a wide range of aesthetics. Visit www.hardwoodinfo.com for more about residential design trends and other applications and products using American hardwoods.

book plans for home library Courtesy of Home Improvement News and Information Center

There is probably a lot of wisdom in the old adage that supposes you are what you read. Music lovers often do like to read about musicians, just as gardeners enjoy learning about the gardens of the world. But if there is particular advantage to the plan for sprucing up the home library, it just might be affording yourself the opportunity to take a look at what you haven’t read. While planning fine hardwood flooring and built-in bookcases, one owner — who was also a sailing enthusiast — took the opportunity to delve into the history of some of his favorite lakes. Soon after, new renovations were in the works to properly display the growing collections of history and geography of that life-long favorite recreation. Long after the family ship has set its last sail, the beautifully-bound books will be there to spark the imagina-

Parents, do you want your kids’ bedrooms to be relaxing oases where they can decompress and escape the academic and social pressures of school? Don’t assume that means muted colors and quiet sanctuary. Instead, designers say, let the room reflect your child’s personality, even if that involves some more vibrant colors and patterns. “Many parents find that hot pink walls are better than hot pink hair, right? And it’s only a bucket of paint. Such a space allows kids to be themselves, and that is a calming thing in today’s world,” said interior designer Kelee Katillac, who enjoys designing children’s rooms and runs a studio in Kansas City, Missouri. She and other designers recommend working with kids to create an organized, multi-functional and comfortable bedroom with an interesting color palette.

What’s the room for? A first step to creating a great space for kids is defining what purposes the room must serve, Katillac said. Most kids do more than sleep in their rooms. They play, do homework and entertain friends there. Delineate a place for each of the room’s main functions, she said. If a child intends to study in the room, supply a desk, chair and good lighting. Create a reading nook for the bookworm. For the kid who likes to have friends over, provide a seating area — even if it’s just cushions and a rug — and have mood lighting or even decorative string lighting. Defining separate areas helps kids relax because it creates a sense of structure, Katillac said.

It can be easy and inexpensive to incorporate a favorite hobby, sports team or activity into the room. Decals, bedding, artwork and accessories can highlight a child’s interests, and are easy to change out as they get older, said Melisa White of Melisa White Interiors in New York. Writable surfaces such as chalkboard paint or large marker boards also let kids customize their room.

Consider including a shelf or bulletin board where kids can display items important to them, she said. When Katillac was working with a teenager who collects shoes, she put in shelving where he could set out some of his favorite pairs. It’s gotten easier to have a house full of pets without sacrificing the home decor you want. Interior designer Vern Yip, a judge on HGTV’s “Design Star” and a dog person, says new technology has led to a variety of stylish AND petfriendly home-furnishing options. “The furniture and homedecor industry has really rounded the corner and come to realize that this is a way of life for a lot of people,” Yip says. rooms can be equipped to serve double duty Courtesy of Metro Creative Graphics

Many homes do not have space for guest rooms, kids’ play areas and home theater lounges that are possible in homes with substantial square footage. But they may not be missing out at all. While large homes remain popular, many people are embracing the benefits of smaller residences. Small homes help homeowners save money, require less maintenance, have smaller environmental impact, and reduce the temptation to accumulate “stuff.” Owners of small homes or apartments can still enjoy the benefits of larger spaces, they just need to equip rooms to perform double duty.

Living/guest room Entertaining guests is easier when there’s a dedicated space where visitors can feel at home. When furnishing a living room, keep the guest

room in mind. A sofa that opens up to a bed or a convertible sectional can be a comfortable place for guests to lay their heads. Side tables provide guests with places to store their belongings, and an empty storage chest can house bed linens or guests’ clothing.

Den/playroom Children tend to accumulate toys and games. And as kids grow from children to young adults, their list of must-have items — from video gaming systems to other electronics — grows along with them. Storage can make a room functional for both adults and children. Devote an entire wall to a closet or drawer system where toys can be stored out of sight when necessary. Storage ottomans can be used for extra seating while also providing somewhere for homeowners to stash stuffed animals or

games for easy access. When choosing furniture, look for fabrics that are resistant to stains and modular pieces that can be moved around as necessary to create room for playing or entertaining.

Bedroom/home office In 2015, 24 percent of employed people in the United States did some or all of their work at home, says the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Bringing work home means men and women will need a space to work. In tight quarters, bedrooms may be the only available area. An armoire-style desk will blend in with the decor and can hide paperwork and electronics behind doors. Otherwise, a makeup vanity can serve the dual purpose of providing a place to get ready for a night out and a ready space to Metro Creative Graphics house a laptop during the day. a TrUndLe sofa bed enables overnight guests to sleep comfortably right in the living room or den. In smaller homes, homeowners may be forced to turn rooms into dual purpose areas.

Is it time to update electrical system? vices may continually cause power outages in the house, such as tripping the circuit breaker or popping a fuse.

The invisible systems in a home often are taken for granted. When such systems are working as expected, daily life moves along smoothly. However, when a system goes awry, it can negatively impact routines and may create a dangerous home environment. This is especially true when something goes wrong with a home’s electrical system. Faulty wiring is a leading cause of residential fires. Many homeowners, particularly those who live in older homes, might be living in properties that have outdated electrical systems. The experts at Lowes ProServices state that having old wiring and/or insufficient amperage in a house can endanger residents. It also may damage appliances and make it difficult to sell a property in the future. It can be difficult to gauge exactly when to overhaul an electrical system. Unless circuits routinely trip or lights often dim, homeowners may

But degrading wires or overextended circuitry can pose a fire risk, so it is best to address electrical systems promptly. Home inspections may uncover electrical problems. Some homeowners may discover potential trouble while making renovations that require opening up walls or tearing them down, exposing the wires. Still other homeowners learn about electrical systems when they’re adding new, large appliances or other gadgets that consume more power than existing items. These de-

When it comes time to update the electrical system, it is always best to work with licensed and bonded electricians who have the expertise to work with electrical wiring without getting injured. This is not a do-it-yourself type of job since it requires specialized training. Electricians likely will recommend upgrading the electrical panel to bring more power from the utility poles into the home. This can include replacing the existing meter and circuit breaker box to allow it to handle more power or replacing items that are obsolete or dangerous. Many older homes are only capable of handling a minimum number of amps, utilizing just a few circuits. But nowadays, when homeowners have far more electronics in their homes than they once did, increased demand on electricity

can overload a circuit (all of the outlets linked on one wire). Tripping a circuit breaker is a safety measure to prevent the wire from becoming overheated and causing a fire. However, in some old systems, the circuit breaker will not trip, and this can be problematic. Rewiring a home is another step. Wire insulation can deteriorate over time, and new wires may be needed. This can be messy and time-consuming, but it’s a small price to pay for safety. When rewiring an electrician also may suggest new outlets. Many home building codes now require outlets with ground fault interrupters, or GFIs, in kitchens, bathrooms and other rooms exposed to moisture. Some older homes may not even have threepronged outlets, so this will necessitate an update as well. Electrical systems are the heart of a home, delivering power where it is needed. It is essential to keep such systems up-to-date so they can handle the power demands of everyday life.

Homeowners can see their way clear to saving on cooling and heating costs, and protecting their skin and home decor from the sun’s damaging UV rays, all thanks to something they can scarcely see at all — window film. Instead of replacing structurally sound windows, they can turn to a simple yet costeffective solution: professionally installed window film — a thin layer of polyester film with high-tech coatings that are nearly invisible to the eye. The International Window Film Association (IWFA) points out that once installed, window film can deliver up to seven times the energy savings per dollar spent. “Many consumers are looking for ways to improve

Continued from page 1 your cellphone. Many of the new offerings — including adjustable mattresses and supportive pillows — help people age in place, says Joe Buckheit, founder of AgingCare.com, a website designed for people caring for loved ones at home.

Innovations ‘exploded’ Innovations in the bedding industry have “exploded,” says Mary Helen Rogers, spokeswoman for the International Sleep Products Association in Alexandria, Virginia. Manufacturers are responding to consumers’ growing understanding of the value of proper rest, and increased interest in working, gaming or watching TV in bed. “Surviving on the minimum amount of sleep is no longer cool,” Rogers says. For people who have difficulty sleeping because they get too warm, Rogers says, manufacturers have begun using new fabrics, foams and gels designed to keep the mattress from absorbing heat. Those improvements address some of the concerns generated by memory foam mattresses, which initially were denser — and therefore warmer — than traditional

mattresses, says Derek Hale, editor of Sleepopolis.com. “Foams are always improving,” he says. “They’re not as warm as they used to be.” There also are products that will blow cool or hot air under the bed or between specialized sheets. Adjustable beds have become more appealing and affordable, Hale says. The motors are quieter, faster, and can be operated by remote control or phone app. Some beds have massage features, USB ports or built-in lighting. In many cases, the bases and mattresses are compatible with traditional bedroom furniture, so buyers don’t have to change their decor. An adjustable bed that allows for additional supportive positions can help ease minor discomforts such as back and joint pain, snoring, acid reflux and swelling in the feet, says AgingCare.com’s Buckheit.

people who have slept on hospital beds and can’t stand it so they wind up purchasing our beds,” she says. “They report their mood and comfort improved by the switch, and for some they are able to sleep back in the same bed with their loved one, which makes them happy.” Today’s adjustable beds let people sharing a bed set their own sleep positions. A wife can adjust her husband’s position if his snoring is keeping her awake, adds Jay Thompson, president of the Leggett & Platt Adjustable Bed Group in Carthage, Missouri. His company makes adjustable bed bases. Many customers — particularly millennials — choose adjustable beds because they want to use the features while they are awake, he says. Medical conditions “People are more open and more thoughtful about their medical conditions,” says Rogers. They are telling retailers, “here’s what’s going on with me, and retailers are passing it on to manufacturers.” While adjustable beds are not a substitute for hospital beds, they do appeal to people with minor health concerns, says Ann Mowrey, spokeswom-
