Rides now operated by Amusements of America BLOOMSBURG — With the exception of the SkyRide, the rides at the Bloomsburg Fair will now be operated by Amusements of America (AoA), one of the nation’s premier carnival operators. They are listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest traveling amusement park in the world and currently offer more than 100 rides and attractions.

stars of ‘80s will bring ‘human touch’ BLOOMSBURG — “Rick Springfield presents Best In Show” with guests Eddie Money, Greg Kihn and Tommy Tutone is coming to the Toyota Grandstand at the Bloomsburg Fair on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m. Tickets range from $30 to $44.

Over the past four decades, Springfield has worn many hats as an entertainer and performer. The creator of some of the finest power-pop of the ‘80s, Springfield is a Grammy award-winning singer, songwriter, and musician who has sold 25 million albums and scored 17 U.S. Top 40 hits, including “Jessie’s Girl,” “Don’t Talk to Strangers,” “An toMMy tutone Affair of the Heart,” “I’ve Done Everything for You,” “Love Somebody” and “Human Touch.” Springfield has toured for more than 40 years, hand-delivering the hits to millions of fans worldwide via his dynamic live shows. His concerts are legendary with their rock heavy, high energy full band sets.

After signing a recording contract with Columbia Records, Money burst onto the scene with his eponymous debut album in 1977. Fans immediately fell in love with Money’s sound, and the album, which went double platinum, featured hits like “Baby Hold On” and “Two Tickets to Paradise.”

casting crowns is ‘the Very next thing’ in Bloom BLOOMSBURG — Christian group Casting Crowns will be performing at the Bloomsburg Fair’s Toyota Grandstand on Sunday, Sept. 23, at 6 p.m. Tickets range from $27 to $40.

Having served as a full-time youth pastor for more than 25 years, Casting Crowns’ front man Mark Hall continues to draw inspiration from the well of real life.

“Because we have the honor of walking with people in our churches, we get to see what people are going through — the issues that are impacting everyone now,” he said. “It’s in these situations that ideas are born for what we all need to hear right here and right now.”

The local church has been the base for Casting Crowns’ music since their label debut release in 2003. With more than 10 million records sold and the title of Billboard’s top-selling act in Christian music since 2007, it’s still where the music is created. The local church is the heartbeat of the band, and the songs are an outpour-

ing of that. “The Very Next Thing,” Casting Crowns’ latest offering, is a collection of intimate songs as well as upbeat, fresh sounding tracks with impactful lyrics centered around identifying and acting on

what’s right next to you.

“I think we all believe the gospel,” said Hall, “we all want it, we’re just not sure what we’re supposed to do next. We’ve got this idea of an awesome walk with Jesus out there somewhere, and we’re looking for the bridge to get over to it. Serving God isn’t this giant dream a year from now. It’s not this thing He’s going to have you do in a month. It’s right now. Following God is the next word of love that I need to speak to somebody, the very next heart that needs to be encouraged. Ministry isn’t on Sunday; it’s not on a stage. It’s you, where you are, doing the next thing God tells you to do.”

Along with this over-arching message, there’s also a deeply personal element to the record. Hall wrote the poignant and powerful “Oh My Soul” after being diagnosed with cancer in 2015. His first worry was about his family and he turned to the scripture in Psalms — Why so downcast oh my soul, put your hope in God.

‘it’s not over’ until daughtry performs BLOOMSBURG — Daughtry is slated to perform at the Bloomsburg Fair’s Toyota Grandstand tonight at 7:30. Ticket prices range from $25 to $37.

“It takes a lot of time to accept who you are,” says Chris Daughtry. “You shave off the persona that you thought people expected, stop worrying about what anyone is going to think. You start to be comfortable with who you are onstage and off, and that all blends together. I think I finally know who I am as a person.”

As the frontman for the band bearing his name, Daughtry has become one of the most visible and consistent rock and roll torchbearers of the 21st Century. Since rising to prominence on the fifth

season of “American Idol,” he has released four albums, all of which reached the Billboard Top Ten and have combined sales of more than 8 million copies in the U.S. Daughtry’s self-titled debut was the best-selling album of 2007, which contained four top 20 hit singles including the Grammy-nominated smash “It’s Not Over.” “Leave This Town” also reached No. 1 in 2009, while 2011’s “Break the Spell” was certified gold. His group’s most recent record, 2013’s “Baptized,” featured the platinum-selling “Waiting for Superman,” which the singer points to as a turning point in his songwriting.

“It was a nice hybrid of where we had been and where we’re go-

ing, and it opened my eyes a bit,” said Daughtry. “Everything was so serious and doom and gloom, and ‘You broke my heart,’ but we never saw ourselves as those people outside the music — onstage we were always joking around.

That helped me wrap my head around the fact that we can be light-hearted and still be us. And that really changed the way I approach the songs in general.”

Daughtry and his band have been performing together for more than a decade.

One thing that has kept the fire burning for Daughtry has been the need to constantly challenge himself creatively. He has collaborated with artists from Timbaland to Vince Gill to Carlos Santana.

BLOOMSBURG — Cole Swindell will be performing at the Toyota Grandstand at the Bloomsburg Fair on Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 7:30 p.m. The opening act is Kyle Mitchell.

Growing up in Oklahoma, Lynne has always been close to her family and relies on their support and encouragement. In

her younger years, she participated in talent-based pageants to overcome her shyness. She was soon introduced to the art of ventriloquism and decided to try it out.

Her hard work, grit and discipline developed from her early days of gymnastics, where she practiced 30 hours a week. After only having her first puppet for two weeks, Lynne began performing in talent shows in her home state and beyond. She was determined to audition for her first talent show, ultimately leading her to audition for the biggest talent show on television.

The stage is now a platform where Lynne can open up and display her incredible talents for the world to see. Her polished, impeccable skill as a ventriloquist at such a young age is jaw dropping and sure to inspire the next generation to keep the craft alive, but when she sings, her voice leaves her audiences breathless.

Recently, Lynne was invited to sing the national anthem at the OKC Energy FC Soccer game, where AGT fans heard her sing without a puppet. She then went on

to open for Fergie at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas on New Year’s Eve. Pelican 212 consists of brothers and sisters who honed their skills performing on the sidewalks of Nashville, New Orleans and Pensacola. The group features 12-year-old trumpet playing identical twins Max and Kolbe, along with siblings Angelle, Marie, Giovanni, Mollie and their oldest sister, Katie, who taught many of her younger siblings how to play their instruments.

Their mission is to bring generations together through the joy of music, playing songs from the Four Tops, The Jackson 5, The Monkees and James Brown. The horn section has their own feisty version of “When The Saints Go Marching In” echoing their New Orleans ties. “At the end of the day, what I get excited about is doing something I haven’t done before. When I record a song, I feel successful if I’ve accomplished something new.”

That’s no small feat, considering that on his first solo album since 2011’s “Guitar Slinger,” Gill returns to his favorite theme, love in all its incarnations: Love sweet and celebrated (“Me and My Girl,” “My Favorite Movie”), love on fire (“Take Me Down,” “Make You Feel Real Good”), love denied (“I’ll Be Waiting for You,” “Down to My Last Bad Habit”) and love lost and mourned (“I Can’t Do This,” “Reasons for the Tears I Cry”).

The Oklahoma native wrote or co-wrote all of the songs on the album.

“I love the diversity of the songs. Some of them are brand new, and some of them have a lot of years on them,” he noted.

“If something’s country, I want it to sound about 1958,” said Gill, with a laugh.

“I want it deep, as honest and authentic as it should be.”

The songs on Down to My Last Bad Habit run the gamut of styles, including the jazzy “One More Mistake I Made,” the down-and-dirty Chicago blues of “Make You Feel Real Good,” and the blistering “I Can’t Do This,” which hearkens to the pop power ballads of the ‘70s. One of the album’s highlights, “I Can’t Do This” captures the excruciating pain of a man who runs into his old flame with her new beau, and remembers the nights “I’ve seen that red dress hanging on our bedroom door.”

“Boy, you talk about torment!” Gill said. “But I like melancholy. It’s light years more fun to sing. There’s so much more emotion in it.”

tractor, truck pull will roll into Bloomsburg sept. 22 BLOOMSBURG — The largest sanctioned tractor and truck pull in Northeast Pennsylvania will roll into the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds on the opening Saturday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m. Tickets range from $12 to $23. In case of inclement weather the event will move to Sunday, Sept. 23, at noon.

This pull has it all and certainly something for everyone. USA-EAST sled pulling, a subdivision of full pull productions from Jamestown produces this huge motor sport extravaganza in front of the main grandstand.

But while tractors are a large part of this super event that is jammed with family-friendly entertainment, there is far more to see. But for many, the tractors are the key. These are tractors that originally were used on the farm, and when they came from the factory, they might have had 135 horsepower. But now, these multiturbo charged machines will put out 1,200 to 1,500 horsepower by using diesel and alcohol as fuel. This is not your grandfather’s tractor!

And then there are the super modified four wheel drive trucks. Huge mountain motors — up to 738 cubic inches — are accepted in this class. And super chargers (blowers) are permitted. Nitrous oxide from drag racing applications is also “good to go.” But these big alcohol engines are challenged very nicely by turbo-charged diesel engines with the ultimate in low end torque.

This three-division pulling event will amaze with the super power that will be on display. Fans should secure their tickets early, as this event has been sold out in many of the previous years.

schools will vie in steM competition on energy use BLOOMSBURG — Judging and presentations for the 2018 Bloomsburg Fair STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) competition will be held from 3 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept.

Participating high schools are Berwick, Central Columbia, Danville, Hazleton Area Academy of Sciences, Midd-West, Millville, Montgomery and Shikellamy.

horticulture hall will be a ‘fair’y tale experience this year BLOOMSBURG — Everyone enjoys an adventure and, this year’s theme at the Bloomsburg Fair’s Horticulture Hall, “Fair”-y Tale Adventures, is sure to take you back to your childhood.

As you enter the building, experience a beautiful garden filled with vignettes of classic fairy tales. See Cinderella’s glass slipper resting on a pillow of red carnations with yellow chrysanthemum fringe.

Visually lay down on a bed of all flowers and plants and taste the porridge from “Goldilocks and the Three Bears.”

“Grandma, what big eyes you have,” says Little Red Riding Hood. Visitors are sure to get a scare from the larger-than-life wolf.

Look at the back of the garden, and you will see a 14-foot beanstalk with the Giant coming through the clouds after Jack illustrating “Jack and the Beanstalk.”

A spinning wheel surrounded by flowers is sure to put “Sleeping Beauty” into a deep sleep while she awaits her kiss from her handsome prince.

To your right, flowering and green foliage plants and hanging baskets are exhib-

ited.

Your adventure continues past the house “Hansel and Gretel” couldn’t resist.

The house is made of candy and flowers (of course). The Hansel and Gretel theme remains through the archway and is depicted in the niches by local garden clubs.

On your way to the niches, look to your left to see the whimsical exhibit of flower pot figures.

The adventure continues as you approach the always anticipated garden club displays. This year’s clubs were chal-

lenged to bring fairy tales to life using beautiful flowers and accessories.

As you round the corner past the garden clubs’ exhibits, be sure to enjoy the wall featuring entries of beautiful cut flowers in glass vases in an array of colors and variety.

To round out the adventure, please feel free to relax and reminisce as you sit at one of the bistro tables around the fountain. Before you leave, cast a coin in the fountain, make a wish and may all your fairy tale dreams come true.

“Championship Double Figure 8 Racing®” is a form of Action Racing developed by JM Productions a few years ago using compact cars to enhance the excitement for drivers and spectators.

This form of Figure “8”, unlike other forms, is in front of the Grandstand on the Race Track, in a minimum area of 45 feet wide x 120 feet long for a single track and 240 feet for a double track.

Utilizing smaller lightweight cars takes on all the excitement of a full sized Figure 8. Speeds average between 5 and 15 miles an hour and only 5 to 10 cars are allowed on the track at one time. Drivers need to out-think and out-maneuver their competitors in order to win. Because of the challenge this event presents, its popularity is growing. Book an Event.

Journey back to 19th century at fair’s historic Barton house BLOOMSBURG — The oldest building on the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds is the Barton House, near the children’s rides. Built in 1855, it has been restored and is open to the public, free of charge, every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Come and see where one of the original Bloomsburg Fair organizers, Caleb Barton, lived.

Every day there will be guides in the garden to discuss the plants and answer any questions. They have various seeds they will give away.

Vespers service set tonight at bandshell BLOOMSBURG — The 2018 Bloomsburg Fair Vespers Service will be held at the free bandshell tonight, with a music prelude by Raven Creek (bluegrass, gospel and old-time music featuring Joe and Lorraine Feola) at 5:30 and the service starting at 6.

The guest speaker will be Pastor Darwin Goshorn, a retired minister from Dry Run. Music will be provided by the Vesper Choir, directed by Carolyn Sweeney of First Eng-

lish Baptist Church, Bloomsburg.

An offering will be given to displaced veterans at Orangeville Manor.

Goshorn served as the pastor of the Orangeville Charge of the United Methodist Church for 11 years, as well as in various community organizations. He retired from there in 2014, but continues to fill different pulpits in Franklin County, where he now lives.

Oscar will be roaming the grounds at the Bloomsburg Fair daily, Sept. 22-29, from noon to 7 p.m. He plans to spend his time entertaining his new friends near the racetrack and Martz Technology Center/Farm Museum and outside the Agriculture, Horticulture, Arts and Crafts, Industrial and Educational buildings. He was a speech therapist and served the students of the Millville and Benton school districts for more than 30 years.

Free harness racing will be back at the Toyota Grandstand today at 1 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 22, at 11 a.m. Dan and Galla will be performing between races both days. New this year will be 50/50 drawings in which participants will place their tickets in a bucket corresponding to the horses in the race. The winner will then be drawn from the bucket of the horse that wins the race.

Dan & Galla will appear at various fair locations BLOOMSBURG — Dan & Galla enjoy performing all over the Bloomsburg Fair. And it’s a party wherever they are, with fairgoers joining their show hula hooping or playing tambourines or dancing on the Midway.

Dan & Galla will be appearing at harness racing today at 1 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 22, at 11 a.m. Look for them in the grandstand, playing music between races. Come cheer on your favorite horses and sing along with Dan & Galla’s diverse repertoire. Admission is free.

Don’t be cowed by new QR codes in Livestock Department

The Livestock Department near gate 5 on Avenue F is ready to welcome you to the 163rd edition of the Bloomsburg Fair.

We are excited to continue sharing with you mutton busting (kids riding sheep, like featured at rodeos) in our Sunset Ice Cream Livestock Outdoor Ring. Daily mutton busting signups for the children will take place at the outdoor ring.

We have numerous educating and entertaining demonstrations for you in this ring by 4-H kids and their animals, pigs and people program, miniature donkeys, Clydesdales, Percheron Hitch and Scottish Highlander Cattle, among other invited guests.

New this year, fairgoers will find about 20 QR codes posted throughout the barns.

Using a QR reader mobile device app, scan the codes to find out more information about a particular animal.

You will not want to miss our 4-H Horse and Pony Drill Team perform daily in the large livestock arena, sponsored by Vance’s Apple dumplings. Penn Cheese, our fair sponsor, made cheese from our milk collected in our milking parlor from last year’s fair. We are educating about milk products and giving the opportunity to purchase cheese made from our fair’s milk. This year, half-pound blocks of sharp, smoked, pepper and chives-garlic Cheddar cheese will be sold for $5 each or five for $20.

The souvenir penny press in front of the cattle barn will be back. Four different designs will be available for 50 cents each, plus your own penny, of course.

Don’t miss our designated kids area where Farmer Bloom, our fair’s mascot, will be stationed among other fun things for kids to do and learn about livestock and agriculture. In this kids area, we have a cow with imitation components for the kids to milk, a scavenger hunt and pedal tractor course. The ever-popular corn box is new this year and ready for the hundreds of kids who play in it daily. There will be plenty to see and do, while learning about raising animals and farming.

There will be a sale of the 4-H market animals in the small arena on Friday night at 6. This sale gives 4-H members a chance to make money for college or start a business. 4-H club members will be offering to have your picture taken with a calf, lamb, donkey, horse or goat.

Agility Dogs will perform throughout the week; please see the livestock schedule for days and times.

We are very excited about our very successful horse pulling contest and have received more sponsorships to be put towards the premiums. Also a fan favorite is the mini horse pull which will held the morning of Saturday, Sept. 29, at 9:30. The pony pulling that afternoon is always a well attended event.
