When it’s full, a bottle of Gatorade holds 32 ounces of a strangely salty-sugary mixture of ingredients as simple as water and as complicated as monopotassium phosphate. When it’s empty, it can hold about $30 in change. Wrestlers in Middletown’s high school and middle school, thirsty after their bouts, have often emptied Gatorade bottles of their liquid. After a recent wrestling match, they downed their Gatorade, supplied by the booster club, and then were asked: How would you like to fill them with money for a good cause? A wrestler at a rival high school had gone missing during a canoe trip on the Susquehanna River on Dec. 1, and his father was a 1983 graduate of Middle-

town Area High School and a former wrestler himself. The Middletown wrestlers could use the empty bottles to raise money to help the family pay bills during their search for the teen. Wrestlers collected from friends and family, from fellow employees at their part-time jobs and fellow church members. In less than a week, the wrestlers from Middletown Area High School and Middletown Area Middle School raised $2,385 in donations from acquaintances and strangers, from students, alumni, teachers and school staff. On a cold Thursday night, Dec. 20, high school team captains Michael Osayi and Will Botterbusch presented a check in that amount to the team captains of Cedar Cliff High School’s wrestling team at the beginning of a match between the schools at

After less than one full year in office, Thomas Handley has resigned from Middletown Borough Council effective Monday, Dec. 22. Handley, who represents the First Ward, submitted a onesentence letter of resignation that said, “Due to personal reasons I have decided to resign my seat on Middletown Borough Council effective Thomas Handley this date.” When contacted by the Press And Journal, Handley refused to elaborate on why he is stepping down. He also would not comment when asked for an update regarding the pending sale of his house at 128 W. Emaus St. to the Middletown Industrial and Commercial Development Authority. The authority has decided not to proceed with the purchase of Handley’s house for now, said Chairman Matt Tunnell. In November, the authority disclosed that it intended to purchase Handley’s property for $150,000, one of several properties that the authority planned to purchase, and subsequently demolish, to clear the way for the proposed extension of West Emaus Street to

Middletown Area School District Superintendent Lori Suski will get a 2.5 percent raise in 2014-15, bringing her annual salary to $137,183.95. The Middletown Area School Board voted on Monday, Dec. 22 to give the district’s chief executive officer the raise based on results of the board’s annual Lori Suski evaluation of Suski’s performance during 2013-14. The raise is retroactive to July 1. Board President Barbara Layne praised Suski’s “unbelievable commitment and hours” to the school district over the past year. “We are very lucky to have Dr. Suski in this school district,” Layne said. “She has done a wonderful job on behalf of our community.” Suski has led the district since July 2012, when she was appointed to take over for the retiring Richard Weinstein. Before assuming the top spot Suski had been Middletown’s assistant superintendent for five years, and before that the principal of Kunkel Elementary School for seven years.
