An Oasis of Sparkling Lakes, Towering Pines, Abundant Wildlife, and Friendly Hospitality

At the top of Wisconsin, you’ll find a place where wilderness is alive and flourishing. Water draws people to picturesque Presque Isle, whose name in French means “Almost An Island.”

Enjoy abundant natural resources with contemplative endeavors such as hiking, birding, and photography, or faster-paced activities like boating, biking, and snowmobiling. Our diverse trails and pathways, water and waterfalls, and glacial hills and forests provide outdoor enthusiasts with plenty to do all year long.

Our History Then...

Nearly 300 years ago, shipwrecked French priests on the shores of Lake Superior made their way down a river to an area they christened “Presque Isle,” or “Almost an Island,” because of the vast stretches of lakes and rivers that dwarfed the land. The advent of the logging era brought development in the early 1900’s. In 1905, Presque Isle was known as Fosterville, after one J.J. Foster who built and operated a large saw mill. William S. Winegar bought the mill in 1910 and the fledgling community was renamed “Winegar.”

2

www.presqueisle.com

When the mill closed in 1933, the great “Lumber Baron” era came to an end. Today the mill ponds are visible from the village and make up our flagship park: Pipke Park.

In l955, the village name was changed once again. Reflecting the wisdom and farsightedness of early French missionary priests, we finally became... “Presque Isle” – Almost an Island.

A visit to the Heritage Society Museum in downtown Presque Isle will take you back to these simpler times.

Our History Now…

Presque Isle’s Pipke Park is rich in history and wildlife, and boasts excellent yearround recreation. The site includes two “ponds” with trails and fitness equipment; the neighboring woods a 2.8 mile trail system ideal for hiking and snowshoeing. The ponds and wooded trails are bisected by the quiet flow of the Presque Isle River.

In the early 1900’s, the Vilas County Lumber Co. was built on the edge of the ponds and utilized the water as “hot ponds.” Exhaust steam from the mill kept the water thawed all winter. Logs were piled in and transported via the railway which made its way past the ponds and into town to a railway turntable. In 1933, the lumber mill closed.

By 1950, a new vision emerged. The ponds were now being used by the State as rearing ponds for raising Walleye. The project proved highly successful, eventually developing into the largest walleye rearing operation in the State, with millions of fry distributed to lakes throughout Wisconsin. By the 1990’s, the State no longer had funding to continue, and much of the surrounding land was deeded back to the Town. In the mid-2000’s... a town park was developed, and includes ice skating and a warming hut in the winter, and fishing, walking/hiking, biking, and birdwatching throughout the spring, summer, and fall. The American Legion Post #480 sits on the entrance to the site; and a new Wilderness Veterans Flame Memorial is nestled along the shoreline and access pathway. The park and hut are always open to the public, with parking, indoor restrooms, tables indoors and out, and additional amenities for all to enjoy. 715-686-2910

A designated Bird City and home to hundreds of nesting Osprey and Eagle. Our glacial hills and crystal waters will make you an enthusiastic discoverer of Wisconsin’s Last Wilderness. HUNTING

When considering the thousands of acres of prime hunting grounds surrounding Presque Isle, it is difficult to envision a more ideal place to base your trip. We are sandwiched between the Ottawa National Forest with one million acres of public land to the North, and the Northern Highland State Forest with 250,000 acres of public lands in the other directions. In addition, paper company land, managed forest cropland, and other large tracts provide enthusiasts with many more acres to explore.

KEY DATES:

• Northwoods Bird Festival at the North Lakeland Discovery Center and highlighting two Presque Isle locations: May 11-12

• Annual Bird Counts including the Midwest Crane Count and Christmas Bird Count. See discoverycenter.net for more info. • Youth Turkey, Waterfowl, and Deer Hunts in April, September, and October. See dnr.wi.gov for more info.

• Hunting Seasons for Deer, Bear, Migratory Waterfowl, Turkey, Small Mammals, and Furbearers. See dnr.wi.gov for more info.

CATHERINE WOLTER WILDERNESS AREA This 2,189-acre nature preserve in-

cludes 15 lakes and ponds with 36,000 feet of undeveloped shoreline. Donated by the Catherine Wolter family, longtime residents of Presque Isle, the wilderness area is an undisturbed gem in the heart of Presque Isle and allows the enjoyment of nature in its pristine state for years to come. Enjoy hiking, snowshoeing, bird-watching and other low impact recreational activities. New this year: groomed cross country skiing sponsored by the Town of Presque Isle (yellow loop only). From the intersection of Highways B and W in Presque Isle, go east on Hwy B for 2.7 miles and turn left onto East Bay Road for .7 miles. The parking lot and signage is located on the right.

NORTH LAKELAND DISCOVERY CENTER Open to the public from dawn to dusk

year-round, featuring gentle terrain that winds through the woods, Statehouse Lake, across a bog, and along the Manitowish River, allowing you to explore a variety of habitats. Follow an interpretive trail, or explore the 22-station breeding bird trail dispersed throughout the trail system. See listing page 38.

NORTH LAKELAND SCHOOL A beginner friendly, groomed classical ski and skate trail system that loops eight miles through a variety of evergreens and hardwoods. A superb warming hut featuring bathrooms, hot drinks, reading materials, and lots of coziness!

PIPKE PARK TRAIL SYSTEM Features include a walking/biking/handicapped accessible trail around Presque Isle's downtown rearing ponds, as well as a new wilderness trail system that starts off along the river -- an ideal spot for snowshoeing and hiking. The Pipke Park Pavilion’s Warming Hut is open year-round with flush toilets and tables. The pond area in front of the hut is maintained for outdoor ice skating in the Winter.

PRESQUE ISLE NATURE TRAIL SYSTEM For a short but sweet hike, take the Nature Trail behind the Community Center in Presque Isle. The Nature Trail loop features a lake overlook, footbridge, and gorgeous views of maples and ferns throughout. Other trails in the system wind through the woods to our Heritage Apple Orchard (with over 80 apple trees) and to the Shanty Boy Hill Cemetery, a burial and memorial place for loggers of long ago. VAN VLIET HEMLOCKS STATE NATURAL AREA An opportunity to explore and experience what was once abundant in Wisconsin; an old growth hemlock forest. The site’s 400 acres and mile and a half of undeveloped shoreline on Van Vliet Lake represent a rare remnant of this uniquely historic forest system. Walk along undisturbed cedar swamps, bog lakes, climb scenic eskers, and take in the richness of the plant and animal life that abounds in this special place. See map page 31. WINMAN TRAILS This system spans 1,300 acres and is a silent sports mecca,

featuring ten miles of premier mountain biking. Purpose-built trails with flowy single-track, berm turns, rock features, and freeride structures. The site’s terrain features rolling topography and unique ecology, making this a blast to recreate in. Fatbiking trails too! Trailhead in Winchester, just north of the intersection of Highways W and J. See Listing page 45.

PADDLING: Take your pick... from intimate

river paddles to lake paddles. Choose your boat... kayak, canoe, paddleboard, or pedal paddleboard. Our name in French means “Almost An Island” which means water everywhere! Stop by the Chamber office for a copy of our new Canoe Trails map, which identifies a dozen trips, from two to six hours in length and at varying degrees of difficulty.

BIKING: Northern Wisconsin is fast becoming a biking mecca due to its diverse trails, scenic routes, and friendly hospitality.

• Border Trails System: Cyclists will find 100 miles of paved backroad trails that provide exceptional scenery and sense of quiet. Located along the Wisconsin border, the system runs into Michigan through some of the most beautiful, rolling lake country the region has to offer. Parking available at the Presque Isle Community Center.

• Heart of Vilas County: Choose from 60 miles of connected trails in Vilas and Iron Counties. The trail is fully paved, primarily off-road and appropriate for all types of bicycles. Stopover spots along the way include ice cream parlors, beaches, scenic bridges and picnic tables.

• Presque Isle Road Trail: Start in downtown Presque Isle and follow the road route and easy off-road sections as you loop around ponds, take in quiet back roads, and enjoy a nice out and back ride, with areas to stop and enjoy a swim or picnic.

SNOWMOBILING: The region offers hundreds

of miles of trails meandering through vast stretches of pine and hardwood forests, and around numerous lakes. We are blessed by the Lake Superior Snowbelt and see more snow than most other Wisconsin locations. Ride to a new Vilas County or Upper Peninsula destination every day of the week to experience fantastic scenery, hospitable restaurants and taverns, and cozy lodges. Our Sno-Bunnies do a superb job grooming, with frequent endorsements as “the best trails in the region.” MidwestSnowmobiling.com

BIRDING: Presque Isle, a Wisconsin Bird City, is a great location for backyard birds as well as those in woods and waters habitats. Join an informed, fun group in the Discovery Center Bird Club. They plan weekly and seasonal outings, and visit Presque Isle’s Pipke Park, Van Vliet Hemlocks, and Catherine Wolter Wilderness Area; and kayak the Presque Isle River and Rice Creek Natural Area. DiscoveryCenter.net

GEOCACHING: Did you know our town was once named “Winegar”? We have combined technology with historical facts, introducing visitors to the treasure hunt known as “Geocaching”. This activity allows people to get outside and enjoy nature while utilizing e-devices. This spring, a series of geocaches will be placed throughout the township; highlighting some of the people, places, and events that helped shape our village, from the logging days of the 20’s, through the tourist boom of the 60’s, and beyond. MOUNTAIN BIKING: The WinMan Trails are a network of silent sport trails in neighboring Winchester. Spanning 1300 acres of private land and public Northern Highlands State Forest recreation land, over 5 miles of purpose-built single track trails and terrain offer excellent opportunities for mountain biking and fat biking. A new chalet, instructional and social activities, and a top-notch trail system that caters to beginners and experienced riders make this a destination not to be missed. WinmanTrails.com

STAR GAZING: Dark skies are essential for getting clear views of the night sky, the Milky Way and even the aurora borealis (aka northern lights). Known as “Wisconsin’s Last Wilderness,” Presque Isle has few streetlights and quiet, spread-out homes and resorts, ideal for night sky viewing. Much of the sky’s treasures are visible with the naked eye, or bring a set of binoculars or your telescope for enhanced viewing.
