Presque Isle Heritage Society
What’s In A Name? Nearly 300 years ago, shipwrecked French priests on the shores of Lake Superior made their way down a river to an area they christened “Presque Isle,” or “Almost an Island,” because of the vast stretches of lakes and rivers that dwarfed the land. The advent of the logging era brought development in the early 1900’s. In 1905, Presque Isle was known as Fosterville, after one J.J. Foster who built and operated a large saw mill. William S. Winegar bought the mill in 1910 and the fledgling community was renamed “Winegar.” When the mill closed in 1933, the great “Lumber Baron” era came to an end. Today the mill ponds are visible from the village and make up our flagship park: Pipke Park. In l955, the village name was changed once again. Reflecting the wisdom and farsightedness of early French missionary priests, we finally became... “Presque Isle” – Almost an Island. A visit to the Heritage Society Museum in downtown Presque Isle will take you back to these simpler times. In recognition of Presque Isle’s rich history and logging era heritage, the Town of Presque Isle adopted a new lumberjack logo that also retains the “Wisconsin’s Last Wilderness” moniker as an honor to the natural assets we are blessed with. The Presque Isle Chamber of Commerce hosts its annual Presque Isle Days event the last full weekend of June, which includes silent sporting events as well as a professional, modern-day lumberjack show demonstrating the logging skills of old. P ipke Park Year-Round Enjoyment
This pond is stacked with panfish & tadpoles are everywhere.
A Park With History Pipke Park is rich in history and wilife and featuring excellent year-round recreation. But it wasn’t always this way… In the early 1900s, the Vilas County Lumber Company was built on the edge of the ponds, utilizing the water as “hot ponds.” Exhaust steam from the mill kept the water thawed all winter and logs were piled in and transported via railway. In 1933, the lumber mills had closed and by 1950, a new vision emerged. The ponds were then used by the State of Wisconsin to rear Walleye fry. The project proved highly successful, turning into the largest walleye rearing operation in the State. By the 1990s, the State discontinued the project and the surrounding lands were deeded back to the Town to later become Pipke Park. The grounds and nearby woods were redesigned to provide visitors with easy access and a variety of ways to enjoy. Neighboring the Park and also sitting on the shores of the pond are the American Legion Winegar Post #480 and the Wilderness Veteran’s Memorial Park, with an eternal flame burning in honor of veterans and servicemen and women.” NEW! Fishing Presque Isle Fishing partners = friends for life. Sunrise Resort
PAN FISHING: Fish at the piers or from a canoe at Pipke Park’s South Pond. In May 2019, the Town stocked the lake with Largemouth Bass and Bluegill, thanks to donations from many individuals, businesses and organizations. In December 2019, the Town applied for designation as a Community Fishing Pond via the State of Wisconsin’s program. MUSKY AND WALLEYE FISHING: Class A1 and A2 lakes abound, with the capacity for trophy fish oft-noted in Presque Isle’s 3-Lake Chain. Related to the musky is the fish of shore lunches – the Walleye. There are an increasing number of 20+” Walleyes, as well as the occasional 30” fish. Many practice catch-and-release with bigger fish and enjoy a home-cooked fish fry with 13-18 inchers. BASS FISHING: A lesser-known fishery in Presque Isle is that of the Smallmouth Bass, which has evolved and improved dramatically over the years.
Hunting Presque Isle When considering the thousands of acres of prime hunting grounds surrounding Presque Isle, it is difficult to envision a more ideal place to base your trip. We are sandwiched between the Ottawa National Forest with one million acres of public land to the North, and the Northern Highland State Forest with 250,000 acres of public lands in the other directions. In addition, paper company land, managed forest cropland, and other large tracts provide enthusiasts with many more acres to explore. 26

Skiing: The Catherine Wolter Wilderness Area is a protected Nature Conservancy site with nearly 10 miles of undeveloped shoreline and 15 wild lakes and ponds. The 2.8 mile Mark Musolf Family Trail is groomed for skiing. The site also includes an extended trail system for ungroomed skiing and continued exploration featuring some of the quietest, most peaceful woods the area has to offer. Canoe Routes: Featured Route #1 Choose a six-lake paddle and portage route that starts with a put-in at Crab Lake and ends with a take-out on Little Horsehead Lake in downtown's Sensenbrenner Park. The paddling and distance are moderate with a few sets of mild rapids. Experience some of the most beautiful lake paddling the area has to offer. Featured Route #2 Paddle pristine Rice Lake State Natural Area by putting in at Round Lake and lake paddling to and through your destination. Rice Creek is an approximately 2-mile stretch of water surrounded by protected, ecologically rich lands owned by the WNDR. Consider a round-trip paddle back or you may choose to arrange for take-out at Big Lake’s State Forest Campground. Bike Trails: An established bike route begins at the Community Center Park and travels through downtown, on County Road W, and along a series of quiet backroads. The trail is adjacent/connected to the roadway and provides gorgeous scenery with views of the dam at Sensenbrenner Park, Presque Isle River, Pipke Park Ponds, as well as a number lakes and wooded landscapes.

Go Boating: Presque Isle means “almost an island” in French, as described by the Voyageurs hundreds of years ago. We have larger lakes for active pursuits like skiing and tubing, and smaller lakes for quieter activities like wildlife watching and cocktail cruising. Take your pick… and consider exploring a different lake every day of the week! Scenic Route: Whether by car or bike, this route is not to be missed! We suggest beginning off County Road B on Crab Lake Road and Dave Franzen continuing your 14-mile, windy loop all the way around. Take it in one fell swoop or plan stops along the way. Activities await including: hiking, geocaching, birdwatching, picnicking, swimming, and more. Don’t forget to bring your camera! There is plenty to capture and you may even get a glimpse of the albino deer occasionally sighted along Crab Lake Road. Hunting: Presque Isle is immediately adjacent to the one-million acre Ottawa National Forest to the north in Michigan and features thousands of acres of lands within Presque Isle that are a part of the 260,000-acre Northern Highland State Forest. Add these lands to paper company lands and large tracts of managed forest croplands and you’ll find a plethora of options for your next hunt, situated in an ideal wilderness setting. Located at the Community Center Park in downtown Presque Isle is a Heritage Apple Orchard, a short but beautifully diverse Community Nature Trail, the Gary Wallace Ball Fields, and the Shantyboy Hill Cemetery. Explore one or many of these sites and activities. There are a number of geocaches located throughout the Park, as well as the Heritage Museum, Presque Isle Community Library, and Community Gardens. Let’s Go Fishing: Numerous named and unnamed lakes to explore! From deep and clear Class A musky and walleye lakes like Presque Isle Lake, to Canadian-shield style lakes like Oxbow and Crab touting a diverse fishery, to quieter panfishing lakes like Stateline and Mud Lake… just to name a few. Snowmobiling: We often hear “best trails in the area”… and we agree! Our volunteer Sno-Bunnies Snowmobile crew consistently grooms and maintains the Presque Isle-Winchester trails to peak condition. Add to that the extra inches of snow Lake Superior annually blesses us with, plus unparalleled scenery, and you’ll understand why that claim is heard year after year.

Geocaching Capital of the Northwoods Long knows as “Wisconsin’s Last Wilderness” – now, because of the “Winegar Reflections Series” of geocaches, it is also recognized as the “GEOCACHING CAPITAL OF THE NORTHWOODS.” The series consists of 30+ unique caches placed throughout the township. The caches tell the story of the rich history of the area. As you search for these hidden “treasures,” using your smartphone or GPS unit, you will learn about the people, places, and events that shaped the town. Some of the many interesting caches awaiting you include: • Big Bill Winegar (Sensenbrenner Park) – A tribute to William S. Winegar, who ran a successful logging company from 1910 through 1926. • The Moonshiners – Moonshiners from KY settled here and set up stills in the woods around town. At one time, you could knock on any door and get moonshine. Look for an “appropriately themed” container. • Bird City Hotel (wooded area across from Pipke park warming shed) – Unique cache placed to recognize the town of Presque Isle designated as a Wisconsin “Bird City.” • Salute That Flag (grounds of American Legion Post 480) – After finding the cache, plan a visit to the Veteran’s Memorial located just east of the Legion. • Shanty Boy Hill Cemetery – A tribute to all the brave, hardworking lumberjacks who lived and died to make this area The snake got the cache! flourish in its infancy. 32
